Subject: Application for Implementing a Work-Study Program for Class 12 Students

I am writing this letter to propose the creation of a comprehensive work-study program for our Class 12 students. This initiative is designed with the objective to equip our students with practical skills, work experience, and a deep understanding of their chosen fields, complementing their academic curriculum.

These work-study programs will entail a collaboration between our school and various local businesses, organizations, and institutes in fields such as Science, Commerce, and Arts. The students will be given an opportunity to work part-time, enabling them to gain real-world experience while still pursuing their education.

The benefits of such a program are multifold. Writing a good resume is a prerequisite for getting the job of one's choice. There are many resume writings tips that would certainly help a person in writing his resume. Resume writing is nothing but a form of presentation of a person’s personal, academic, and professional profile, in an organized and formal manner which plays a very important role in job appointments alongside the interview. There are various important points that one must keep in mind while writing a resume, and a few resume writing tips would always help you in putting together a decent resume and increase the chance of getting the job of your choice. You must have sufficient practice of resume writing and proofread the resume before submitting it.

The Elements of Resume Writing

For effective resume writing, one should always keep certain points in mind which would help in writing a good resume. The first thing to keep in mind is the heading of the resume, which would occupy the topmost part and attract attention before anything else in the document. This part should have the person's name, email address, other contact information, and communication address. While writing a resume, a summary is very important. The summary comprises the various skills and achievements that a person has in the form of a short paragraph with a few sentences. The professional experience follows the summary, which would comprise the experience that a person has in the relevant field. The educational qualifications, hobbies, and skills should also be highlighted. One must always proofread to ensure quality, and make sure the resume is free of grammatical and spelling errors.

Resume Writing Format

Since a resume contains a lot of information about a person, the format is very important to ensure the information is conveyed in a systematic and organized manner. Resume writing tips would help in deciding the best resume writing template. The three types of resume include combination, functional, and chronological resume, which is accompanied by a cover letter. The chronological resume format is most frequently used which lists the career, and achievements of a person chronologically, from present to past. The functional resume focuses more on the skills of a person than the work experience of that person and is ideal for those who are just starting with their career. The combination resume is as the name suggests a combination of the previous two formats and states the skills as well as the strengths of the candidate and is a balanced view of the two.

Other Types of Resume

There are three additional formats of resumes that are less commonly used. The Infographic resume employs various design elements to display information and uses various layout, colours, and font styles. Targeted resume displays only the required skills and information and is a very specific approach. Other unorthodox resume formats use graphs, charts, etc. to make a resume that can either be in a written or a video format.

Cover Letter

A cover letter must accompany a resume and is a description of the candidate, and his or her interests along with the reasons for wanting to join the particular organization. The cover letter provides an opportunity to the candidates to describe his or her variation in interests, aspirations and preferences. Thereby, it allows the candidate to elaborate upon the information provided in the resume. The cover letter is similar to a normal letter having the contact details, introduction, body, and conclusion.

FAQs on Resume Writing

1. What are the Various Resume Formats?

Answer: The resume format plays an important role in deciding how the information would be presented and understood. The first main format of the resume is the chronological format. In the chronological format, information is presented in chronological order with the work experience remaining in focus. The various jobs and experiences a person has had are presented from the past to the present, in order. A functional resume, on the other hand, focuses more skill than work experience and is the most relevant for people just starting in their profession. The combination resume is a combination of the features of both functional and chronological resumes providing a balanced perspective.

2. What Should be Mentioned in the Resume?

Answer: A resume should have all the necessary details concerning the achievements, qualifications and experience of a person justifying why he or she is best suited for the job. First comes the heading of the resume where the name and contact details of the candidate are mentioned along with the address. The summary follows, which is a small paragraph of not more than five sentences emphasizing on the various achievements and skills of the candidate. After this, comes the educational qualification where the candidates provide his or her academic details. Professional details, the various skills and achievements should also be mentioned in the resume.

  • Essential Elements of a Resume

There are a few key points that should not be overlooked in a Resume. Designing and formulating a resume around these essential points is crucial. It not only helps in providing an edge to your application but also puts you a step ahead of other applicants.

Suggested Videos

Heading of a resume.

It occupies the topmost portion of your resume where the applicant must give his/her Name. After that the contact details and then, the professional title. A professional title gives a clear idea about the post you are looking for or have already been at and are therefore capable of working at. Contact details should mainly include:

  • Phone number
  • Email address
  • Correspondence address (which can be omitted for online applications but the current city must be mentioned).

In this age of online world including your relevant social media links (relevant, such as URL to your LinkedIn handle) your personal website or blog details also helps.

This is nothing but your career narrative, a small paragraph to highlight those skills and career achievements that can immediately attract the employer’s attention. It should be a very brief paragraph, three sentences on an average but must not exceed the limit of five sentences.

One may even use a headline to focus on what can be expected from them. For a fresh graduate, this becomes a career objective. A career objective should be a one-liner where you define what you have to offer and what you expect in return.

Professional Experience

Mentioning the details of the prior experience is necessary. But, to make the mention of your previous job title worth always quantify your work.

Giving the outcomes of the projects and assignments handed by you in numbers and percentage testifies your experience. In the case of a fresher, this section is omitted unless there is a legitimate internship experience present.

No matter how much of the work experience you have mentioning the academic qualification is mandatory. For employers ease of scanning, we make a separate section for this.

For a fresh Graduate, this section succeeds in the career objective section . In the case of an excellent record, mentioning your GPA or percentage is a good idea!

Whether hard skills (Technical) or soft skills (e.g.Communication) are the main interest of the people hiring you. In fact,  including the maximum number of skills based on the job description considerably increase the chances of getting.

Awards and Certificates

There are always some commendable things to tell about that don’t fit into any of the above categories. You can use up the little extra space to mention the accolades that you earned.

Mention of Certificates non-related to your career choice is acceptable until it focuses on the dynamo of your personality. List only those awards in your resume that will surely impress your employer.

Few points to look after:

  • Depending on different Resume Formats the order of the aforementioned sections changes.
  • Applicants status i.e., whether a fresher or experienced also alters the format a little.
  • The tone of the resume should be formal.
  • No spelling mistakes.
  • The inclusion of keywords from the job description.
  • Efficient use of space.
  • Never lie! Each and every detail you provide must be legitimate.

The key-point around which your whole resume should be woven is the job you applied for. So, you must take care that most of the things should be relevant. Relevant to the nature of the post, company, and career.

For example, if you are applying for the post of marketing then mention of a project done on robotics is completely insignificant. We should avoid mentioning such irrelevant stuff as much as possible. Because only a relevant resume is a meaningful one.

Your resume is generally a one-page document that clearly presents your current and past experiences and accomplishments so that your reader can understand the unique value that you bring to the table. As you begin to draft your resume, consider the following. Your resume is:

  • Your first opportunity to make an impression. Step back from the details to consider what story you want to communicate.
  • Foremost, about the content and demonstrating your experiences. Begin by writing your resume in Google docs or Word, and avoid using templates that focus on form over content.
  • A living document that you will tailor to specific positions and will evolve throughout your career.
  • Not a laundry list of every experience; it is a carefully curated list of relevant experiences.
  • Easy to read. Consider font type and size, formatting, and a balance of text and white space.
  • Shared with potential employers as a pdf document.

The header provides your full name and contact information (email address & telephone number). This section should not include personal information (e.g., sex, date of birth, marital status). Items that may be included in your header:

  • Wellesley and/or home address: If you choose both, be sure to label each address accordingly.
  • Personal website, links to professional social media (Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn)

If you are a current student or recent alumna, the education section should be just below the heading, with the most recent education listed first. Generally, you should not include your high school on your resume; however, first-year college students may include relevant high school experiences. Necessary information includes:

  • Your institution and its location (City/Town and State)
  • Your degree (Bachelor of Arts), any major(s) and/or minor(s)
  • Expected graduation date.
  • Optional: Study abroad programs and institutions where you cross-registered for classes.

In this section, provide details about your various experiences, highlighting accomplishments, learning outcomes, and transferable skills. “Experience” is broadly defined and can include full- or part-time work, summer jobs, internships, research, academic projects, campus leadership, volunteer opportunities, etc. Describe your experiences using strong, specific verbs, and emphasize the results and impact of your work. You can create separate and distinct Experience sections to highlight those positions or skills (e.g., Research, Leadership, Extracurricular, or Volunteer).

  • List experiences in reverse chronological order (most recent first).
  • Include name and location of the organization where this experience took place and the title of your role.
  • Include start and end date for your experience. If it is ongoing, list your end date as “Present.”
  • Describe your experience in accomplishment statements, using short phrases starting with a strong verb. Be specific and quantify your experiences whenever you can.
  • Create 2-5 accomplishment statements for each experience.

This section provides an immediate view of the kinds of tasks you are ready to undertake. While you will want to be selective and only list relevant skills, these might range from technical skills, like expertise using a digital tool, to experience-based skills, like project management or database design. This section can also include certifications, languages, etc. In general, it’s best to avoid general skills like people skills, time management or critical thinking. As this section grows, you may divide it into several distinct skills sections, like Software Expertise, Language Skills, Teaching Skills, Design Skills, etc.
