As a doctoral degree more focused on the clinical practice of psychology and less on producing academic research, it’s a popular option for people who want to go on to become licensed psychologists.

Maine students have a few opportunities for degree programs that will set them on the path to a career in psychology. Let’s take a look at the degrees and licensure requirements in the state of Maine.

List of PsyD Programs in Maine

No colleges or universities offer on-campus Psy.D. degrees in the state of Maine, but there are several online programs that can provide the educational experience needed to become licensed in Maine, though it’s important to note that these programs have not been accredited by the American Psychological Association, which means graduates will need to provide additional documentation when they apply for licensure (more on these requirements later).

Online students also should note that in every state, Maine included, applicants for licensure must complete thousands of hours of supervised professional experience, so online Psy.D. programs generally include these internships or practicums and may not be entirely online.

Alliant International University

Offered through the California School of Education (CSOE), Alliant International University is home to a fully online Psy.D. in Educational Psychology that’s split into two possible tracks, school psychology or school counseling. The program is relatively new, so the university has yet to publish career or licensure outcomes for graduates.

Capella University

Capella’s online Psy.D. in Clinical Psychology is designed to be flexible, and the program includes both online and in-person work outside of the internship or practicum experience. According to a Capella survey, 88% of doctoral graduates said what they learned in the program was immediately applicable in their careers.

Prospective psychologists in Maine can choose to pursue a more traditional doctorate, and one such degree is offered in the state.

University of Maine

The University of Maine has offered an APA-accredited Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology since 1975, and today’s students can choose to take a generalist approach to their education or they can opt for a focus on clinical child or neuropsychology. Only about three or four students are admitted in a typical year, and graduates have earned professional licensure at about an 80% rate since 2009.

How to Become a Practicing Clinical Psychologist in Maine

Maine requires all those who practice professionally as psychologists to obtain a state license verifying their education and experience in the area. Let’s take a look at what the state requires, including education, professional experience and other areas.

• Get your bachelor’s degree in psychology or a closely related field. Maine’s psychologist licenses requirements don’t reference the need for an undergraduate degree in psychology, but majoring in psychology in college often is a requirement for admission into advanced programs, including Psy.D. or Ph.D. programs. For those who didn’t major in psychology, remedial courses may be assigned, or students may choose to complete a master’s degree either as part of a doctoral program or before applying. Closely related fields can include social work or statistics, depending on the doctoral program.
• Get a Psy.D. or Ph.D. The state of Maine requires all psychologist license applicants to hold a doctoral degree in psychology. Those who complete programs that aren’t accredited by the APA may still apply, but they will have to meet additional obligations to verify the rigors of their doctoral program. The state also requires applicants to complete at least 1,500 hours (one full year) of predoctoral supervised experience. At least 50% of the experience must be in service-related activities, which can include assessment, treatment and consultation, and at least 25% of the time must include face-to-face contact with patients or clients. No more than 25% of the internship should be spent on research.
• Postdoctoral requirements. After they complete their doctoral training, applicants for licensure in Maine are required to complete at least 1,500 hours of supervised experience with between 25% and 60% of the time spent in direct service. Once experience obligations have been met, applicants are eligible to sit for the Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology (a minimum score of 80% is required) and the state’s jurisprudence exam.
• Remain licensed, and keep up with requirements. In Maine, psychologist licenses must be renewed annually, and professionals are required to complete 40 hours of continuing education every two years, including at least 20 hours in the individual’s current area of practice or expected future areas of practice.

Maine Clinical Psychologist Salary and Job Outlook

The average worker in Maine earns an annual wage of about $48,000, but clinical, counseling and school psychologists are paid considerably more, according to data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics . In fact, the average salary for these professionals in Maine is about $81,000.

Psychologist jobs are expected to grow at a solid rate of about 5.3% in Maine over the next decade, which is slightly higher than the 5% expected for all jobs in the U.S.

Psychology Doctoral Programs in Maine

Students who graduate from the clinical psychology PhD program are ready to pursue careers that involve psychological research and clinical practice

Clinical Psychology

In addition to completing core courses, students have the option to choose a specialty track in general clinical psychology or child clinical psychology. Students are trained based on the scientist-practitioner model of education, and optimize their education with close faculty supervision as well as off-site practicum supervisors. Education covers topics like psychological assessments, psychotherapy, and consultations. Students typically graduate in six to seven years, which include 600 hours of practicum experience, a doctoral dissertation, and a one-year internship. Students have the opportunity to complete research and their practica experiences at locations such as the department’s Child Study Center and Psychological Services Center, as well as in the local community at places like the Eastern Maine Medical Center.

Practitioners of clinical mental health counseling provide guidance for clients who are experiencing developmental life stress and acute transitional problems, as well as clients interested in enriching their present life through the establishment of greater coherence and well-being.

About the Program

In our Clinical Mental Health concentration, students establish their professional identity through the development of facilitative and interpersonal communication skills. We emphasize a holistic approach with a focus on wellness and prevention, as well as self-care of the counselor.

Our Curriculum:

• Explores the roles, functions, skills, and professional identity of clinical mental health counselors.
• Integrates the historical, philosophical, societal, cultural, economic, and political dimensions of the mental health and human service system.
• Focuses on the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of mental and emotional disorders, psychological trauma, and the general principles and practices for the promotion of optimal mental health.

Areas of Expertise

Many Clinical Mental Health students choose to select an Area of Expertise. These options do not require additional credits; rather, students may use their elective credits toward a specific focus. If you select an Area of Expertise, you will also devote 300 of your 900 internship hours toward a site-specific internship.

This Area of Expertise provides theoretical and practical experience in counseling couples and families. Courses focus on incorporating systemic perspectives.

This Area of Expertise focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of co-occurring substance use disorders. Students who complete this area as part of their master’s degree will be prepared to sit for the Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor (LADC) exam in Maine.

Beyond the Classroom: Practicum & Internship

The Clinical Mental Health Counseling Practicum typically begins after you’ve completed 21 credit hours, and lasts for one semester

• Complete 100 practicum hours.
• Gain 40 hours experience of direct client work.
• Receive support from an on-site liaison, direct individual supervision from a faculty member, and additional insight from faculty and peers through a small group seminar

Your internship is a key component of your educational preparation to be a professional counselor. Students typically begin their internship in the semester following the completion of practicum. Depending on whether you are attending part-time or full-time, the internship experience can take 2-5 semesters to complete

• Complete 900 internship hours.
• Gain 360 hours experience of direct client work.
• Receive on-site supervision; our sites offer a 1:1 ratio of student-to-supervisor.
• Receive additional supervision and support from our faculty through a small group seminar, which also serves as an opportunity for case review.

Licensure & Certification

Upon graduation from the MS in Counseling program with a concentration in Clinical Mental Health, you will be qualified for the following exams, certifications, and licensure:

• National Counselor Examination for Licensure and Certification (NCE)
• Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC)
• With additional coursework through the Substance Abuse Area of Expertise, graduates can also meet the requirements to be a Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CADC) and/or a Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor (LADC).

Schools in Maine with Counseling Degrees

Traditional undergraduate programs, washington county community college.

Washington County Community College (WCCC) offers a 37-credit Substance Use and Recovery Certificate that prepares students to become Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselors (CADCs) in Maine. The Substance Use and Recovery Certificate program emphasizes the physiological, emotional, and behavioral impacts of substance use and the various treatment interventions that can be utilized to support individuals seeking recovery. Students will learn about the role of a CADC as well as skills such as screening, assessment, diagnosis, and treatment planning for people with substance use disorders. This program can be completed in one year and includes courses such as Introduction to Psychology; Drugs, Substance Use, and Recovery; and Chemical Dependency Counseling. Students who complete this certificate program also have the option to continue on in the Associate in Applied Science (AAS) in Human Services degree program.

Traditional Graduate Programs

Husson university.

At Husson University, a 63-credit, CACREP-accredited Master of Science (MS) in Clinical Mental Health Counseling is offered. This degree teaches students individual and group counseling techniques; appraisal, screening, and assessment procedures; and counseling research skills that can be used in community mental health settings, hospitals, and private practice. Students will complete a 600-hour practicum and a 900-hour internship in a clinical field placement. Upon completion of the program, graduates will meet state educational requirements to become Licensed Clinical Professional Counselors (LCPCs). A 60-credit, CACREP-accredited MS in School Counseling that prepares graduates to become K-12 school counselors in Maine is also available. During the program, students will complete 100 hours of supervised practicum and 600 hours of supervised internship. The program is designed for working professionals with courses offered in the late afternoons and evenings. Students can complete the program on a full- or part-time basis but all course requirements must be completed in five years. Required courses cover topics such as designing school counseling programs; counseling children and youth; and crisis intervention skills. New students are admitted to the MS programs in the fall and spring terms.

Online and Hybrid Programs

University of maine at augusta.

The University of Maine at Augusta (UMA) is home to several online undergraduate programs in counseling. The Associate of Science (AS) in Mental Health & Human Services is a two-year degree that introduces students to the fundamental theories and techniques used in mental health service delivery and counseling. Students must complete 61 credits, including 25 credits of liberal arts core courses and 36 credits in the major area. The Bachelor of Science (BS) in Mental Health & Human Services builds on the AS curriculum and offers students the opportunity to specialize in concentrations including Adult Mental Health Rehabilitation; Addictions Counseling; Child and Family Services; and Mental Health and Human Services Generalist. Students complete 121 credits including 69 credits in the major, 40 liberal arts requirements, and 12 credits of electives. Graduates of the Adult Mental Health Rehabilitation concentration will meet state educational requirements for the Mental Health Rehabilitation/Community (MHRT/C) credential. A 39-credit online Post Baccalaureate of Science (PBS) in Mental Health & Human Services is available to students who already have a bachelor’s degree, as well as certificates that fulfill state requirements for the MHRT/C and Substance Abuse Rehabilitation Technician credentials. UMA also offers a Graduate Certificate in Substance Use Disorders to individuals who have earned a bachelor’s degree and accumulated at least one year of professional experience. This fully online program consists of 18 credits and qualifies graduates to take the Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CADC) exam and apply for the Certified Clinical Supervisor (CCS) credential.

University of Maine at Machias

The University of Maine at Machias (UMM) offers several undergraduate programs in counseling. The 21-credit Mental Health and Rehabilitation Technician/Community Certificate (MHRT/C) is an online program that introduces students to the clinical mental health and rehabilitation counseling fields with a specific emphasis on working with older adults. The Associate of Arts (AA) in Liberal Studies with a concentration in Mental Health and Rehabilitation is a two-year, 60-credit program that includes the MHRT/C certificate coursework with additional liberal arts core courses. Both programs meet the state educational requirements to become an MHRT/C Technician and provide basic rehabilitation counseling services in Maine. Upon completion of the AA program, students can continue in the Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Psychology and Community Studies, which requires a total of 120 credits. Required coursework includes Behavioral & Community Mental Health Systems; Counseling Diverse Populations; and Psychology Professions & Ethics. A community internship is also required in the senior year. Students have the option to complete a Counseling and Substance Use Rehabilitation Minor, which also qualifies them for full MHRT/C certification.

University of Southern Maine

The University of Southern Maine (USM) offers numerous graduate-level counseling degree programs with online and hybrid coursework options. The CACREP-accredited Master of Science (MS) in Counselor Education is offered with concentrations in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, Clinical and Vocational Rehabilitation Counseling, and School Counseling. The MS in Clinical Mental Health Counseling requires 63 credits and meets state educational requirements for the Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC) credential. At least 25% of the coursework must be completed through face-to-face methods. Students in the MS in Clinical Mental Health Counseling program can also complete an Area of Expertise in Substance Abuse, which meets state educational requirements to become a Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor (LADC), or Family Systems, which focuses on couples and family counseling skills. The MS in Rehabilitation Counseling is offered as a 63-credit Clinical Rehabilitation Track focusing on mental health and a 54-credit Vocational Rehabilitation Track focusing on employment. Graduates of the Clinical Track meet the educational requirements to become Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselors (LADCs) and Licensed Clinical Professional Counselors (LCPCs). Graduates of both tracks are qualified for Maine’s Mental Health Rehabilitation Technician/Community (MHRT/C) credential, the Certified Alcohol & Drug Counselor (CADC) credential, and the Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) credential. About 90% of the coursework for both tracks can be completed online. The MS in School Counseling requires 60 credits and meets state requirements to become a K-12 school counselor. An accelerated graduation program is available to high-achieving undergraduate students at USM that allows them to complete a bachelor’s degree and an MS degree in a compressed time frame. Many students who are enrolled in the MS in Rehabilitation Counseling pursue the MHRT/C Certificate of Graduate Study since it is required for work in agencies that are funded by human service organizations. Applicants who already have a master’s degree in counseling are eligible for the 30-credit Certificate of Advanced Study in Counseling, which focuses on advanced clinical coursework.

License: Clinical Psychologist (Ph.D.) License/Certification Website: Each state has its own licensing requirements and board. Visit the Association of State and Provincial Psychology Boards webpage (External Site) for information about licensure. Additional Information: National – Completion of an American Psychological Association (APA)-accredited doctoral degree in clinical psychology is only one of several requirements for licensure, as specified by individual states. Other requirements include supervised postdoctoral clinical hours, satisfactory performance on a national licensing exam (Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology), etc. Our APA accredited program is designed to meet licensure for the vast majority of states; however, given the local variation in requirements, we do not assure that graduates meet requirements for licensure in all states, territories, or international locations. In line with other APA-accredited doctoral programs in clinical psychology, we have included the following statement on our departmental web page: Our program adheres to APA accreditation standards and prepares students for entry into the profession of Clinical Psychology. Counseling 3+2 – B.A. in Psychology to M.S.

A collaboration between the University of Maine at Farmington and the University of Southern Maine, the Counseling 3+2 — Psychology program provides you with an accelerated pathway to a career in the counseling field.

Interested in a career in Counseling? Want to fast-track your college degree(s) with a focused program of study? Have the motivation, compassion and maturity to jump-start your career path in counseling? If so, the University of Maine at Farmington Counseling 3+2 — Psychology program may be perfect for you.

In this program, you earn a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology at the University of Maine at Farmington (UMF) followed by a Master of Science in Counseling at the University of Southern Maine (USM) — all in five years instead of six.

• 3 yrs – B.A. in Psychology at the University of Maine at Farmington
• 2 yrs – M.S. in Counseling at the University of Southern Maine

This allows you to graduate ahead of time while preparing you for a professional career where you can help meet Maine’s growing mental health needs.

Counselors help individuals, families, and groups with mental health challenges, such as depression and PTSD; drug and alcohol abuse; life transitions, such as adjusting to college; and other difficult life situations.

What does the accelerated pathway to a Master’s Degree in Counseling involve?

You will work to meet all requirements for a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology at Farmington in three years, gaining practical skills through counseling courses, an interactive, discussion-based seminar each semester, mentorship, experience in the field and collaboration with peers.

As part of your Psychology degree at Farmington, you will fulfill the requirements for the Mental Health Rehabilitation Technician Community (MHRT/C) certification, allowing you to gain practical work experience while pursuing your Master’s degree in Counseling at the University of Southern Maine.

In your third year at UMF, a streamlined grad school application process will pave the way to help you gain early acceptance to the University of Southern Maine’s Master of Science in Counseling program.*

At the University of Southern Maine

At the University of Southern Maine you can choose a track in:

• Master of Science in Counseling (MSC) – Concentration in Clinical Mental Health
• Master of Science in Counseling (MSC) – Concentration in School Counseling

Mental Health Counseling prepares you for licensure as a counselor (LCPC or LPC) while School Counseling prepares you for certification in School Counseling with the option of pursuing additional coursework to earn licensure (many students choose to earn this after they graduate while they are working in the field).

* Note: Participation in this 3 + 2 Program does not guarantee admission to the M.S. program at USM. Also, you are not required to pursue graduate school at USM.

In addition, the University of Maine at Farmington Counseling 3+2 – B.A. in Psychology to M.S. program provides an accelerated pathway to earning UMF’s unique Master’s in Psychology – Creative Arts Focus .

That UMF Master’s degree program provides a solid clinical foundation while integrating the creative arts into the practice of counseling and psychotherapy. It offers students across Maine and beyond the training and experience necessary to deliver a wide array of counseling services. A special focus on creative arts allows our graduates to work with the unique needs of individuals for whom traditional talk therapy is inappropriate, such as those with dementia and autism.

What if a fast-tracked degree is not for me or I’m not accepted into the 3 + 2 program?

You can still benefit from all aspects of the 3 + 2 program. By majoring in Psychology at Farmington, you will have the opportunities in Counseling course offerings, the MHRT/C courses sequence, mentoring from UMF faculty to help prepare for graduate school and a career in counseling, and a heavier course load to accelerate your degree if you choose.

UB scholar secures ALISE research grant to investigate career services in LIS graduate programs

A researcher at the university at buffalo graduate school of education recently received a grant to investigate career services in graduate library and information science programs..

Africa S. Hands , assistant professor in the Department of Information Science, won the Association for Library and Information Science Education (ALISE) Research Grant Program Competition, allowing her to continue her research on how library and information science graduate programs prepare students for the job market. Her one-year project, “Positioning LIS Students for Career Success,” will survey current LIS program administrators and enrolled graduate students to better understand the needs of students related to career services and preparation, as well as what is currently being offered through graduate programs. Hands was awarded $5,000.

“Research shows that even at the graduate level, students may possess limited knowledge of the profession they plan to enter,” said Hands. “For those without professional role models, career development and preparation services are particularly vital.”

The Research Grant Program Competition awards funding annually to support research broadly related to education for library and information science.

“As LIS job seekers report such long and frustrating job search experiences that they consider leaving the field entirely, insights from this research will inform the creation or improvement of career services for LIS students, advance discussion of career services for graduate students, and identify exemplars that can be used to guide programming efforts. We are so excited for Africa,” said X. Christine Wang , professor, assistant dean for interdisciplinary research, and director of the Fisher-Price Endowed Early Childhood Research Center.

This project builds on Hands’ already robust research activities. In 2021, she received a three-year early career grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services to support her project, “Public Library Support of College Literacy in Appalachia,” which focuses on examining public libraries as an information resource for college-bound patrons.

In addition, through her service and publications, she aims to improve access to and awareness of information, resources and services that move people toward their personal, professional and community goals. Her work centers on the doctoral student experience, first-generation students’ cultural and social capital, and public library support for college-bound patrons.

“We hear from graduates that the job search process is grueling. Supporting students’ career planning while they are completing their degree may make for a smoother transition to the field,” said Hands. “It’s important that our graduates are prepared for the myriad possibilities of an LIS degree and career.”

Data from the Maine-Syracuse Longitudinal Study (MSLS) have been de-identified and are available for use by students and faculty at the University of Maine.

Funded by the National Institutes for Health, National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI), and the National Institute on Aging, the MSLS study is a multidisciplinary study relating cardiovascular risk factors and disease to cognitive function. Merrill F. Elias, Ph.D., M.P.H. is director of the MSLS, alongside and Michael A. Robbins, Ph.D. as co-director, and Susan P. Elias, PhD as Associate Director for Archiving.

The MSLS has a rich data base. There are up to seven longitudinal waves of data available for over 1,000 community participants and cross-sectional data are available for 2,472 study participants. These data include risk factors for cardiovascular disease, data on cardiovascular disease, clinical cognitive performance measures, and personality and lifestyle measures. Recent waves of the study include many psychosocial variables, demographic variables, information on medications, and extensive data on cardiovascular risk factors and events such as diabetes, stroke, obesity, smoking, homocysteine, APOE-e4 genotype, nutrition, and physical activity. The MSLS data are available to students and faculty of UM as well as other investigators who would wish to use them for research purposes. The research purposes must meet requirements set by the directors for use of these data.
