Attend a Continuing Student L&S Scholarship workshop! Wednesday Jan 31, 2024 from 5:30 - 6:30 at Memorial Union (TITU).

The College of Letters & Science considers incoming and continuing students for scholarship opportunities created by the support of our donor friends.  The undergraduate scholarships program provides support to students who are intending to receive a degree from the College of Letters & Science.  With over 65 majors, special degrees in Journalism; Music, Social Work; and Applied Math Engineering and Physics ; the College of Letters & Science strongly supports the role of a broad and deeply educated citizenry.  Letters & Science graduates use this strong foundation to flourish in their chosen careers .

For the 2024-2025 aid year, continuing students can apply for Letters & Science scholarships beginning December 8, 2023 through the Wisconsin Scholarship Hub or WiSH system by the deadline of February 11, 2024. There are also many unique award opportunities that open throughout the academic year. It is advised that students make a regular habit of logging in to the WiSH system to match to open applications.

For incoming Letters & Science freshmen, there is no separate college scholarship application. High school seniors interested in earning degrees from the College of Letters & Science are reviewed for scholarships with admissions application and FAFSA information.  However, it is recommended that students check the WiSH site for other opportunities.

3. The Indian Student Assistant Grant

Amount: $250 to $1,100

Eligibility: Wisconsin residents who are at least 25% Native American and are undergraduate or graduate students enrolled in a degree or certificate programs at approved institutions; must demonstrate financial need

Eligibility: Seniors attending a high school within 150 miles of Green Bay with a minimum 3.0 GPA and 19 ACT; must plan to pursue a career with an agriculture focus that will enhance rural communities; must demonstrate financial need

The Thomas H. Lutsey-Waseda Farms Scholarship supports students with a rural or agriculture background who want to pursue a career with an agriculture focus. Students should attend a 4-year college, although applicants may transfer from a 2-year technical school.

8. Badger Mining Corporation Scholarships

Amount: Up to $10,000

Eligibility: High school seniors graduating from Green Lake, Princeton, or Markesan High Schools planning to pursue a degree in environmental science or mining engineering

Badger Mining Corporation (BMC) awards several scholarships each year to help students continue their education in engineering or environmental science. Eligible candidates should have a strong academic history, be involved in extracurricular activities, and demonstrate leadership qualities.

The English Department is proud to offer numerous forms of support for its undergraduate students and to recognize exceptional accomplishments in various forms of academic and creative work. Below, you can find information about scholarships, prizes, and grants specifically designated for declared English majors. Typically, these prizes and scholarships are awarded in the spring semester.

Department Scholarships

Numerous scholarships, varying in number and amount, are awarded to students majoring in English who have distinguished themselves through their academic achievements and through service to the college or community. Beginning in 2011, with a generous gift from a member of the English Department Board of Visitors, we are also now able to offer a deserving student a need-based scholarship.  As of 2017, we are also offering a scholarship to a deserving First Generation College Student.

Submission Guidelines

• The deadline for scholarship applications is in February of each academic year
• Please go to: https://wisc.academicworks.com/ . If you have not yet used WiSH (UW-Wisconsin Scholarship Hub) You must first complete the “General Application.” This includes 10 simple questions that result in activating a student dashboard. Then click on the “Opportunities/Recommended” tab on the upper left side of the screen. The application(s) that you are eligible for will then appear on your student dashboard for completion. Click on the appropriate application card to move into the specific application.

Eligibility

In order to be eligible for these department scholarships, students must have:

• Declared the English major
• Junior or senior standing (a level of 3 or 4 which equates to 54 credits or more)
• Completed at least 4 courses in the major
• A cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher

Helen Black Bennett Memorial Scholarship

Established by the donor, Penelope G. Sticha, in honor of her mother, in 1994.

Mary Brabyn Wackman Scholarships

Established by Charline M. Wackman, a graduate of the University of Wisconsin in 1961, in honor of her mother, Mark Brabyn Wackman. Awards are based on academic merit and given to English maors who are “bonafide Wisconsin residents specializing in literature.”

Vivian Mowry English Scholarships

Funded through a trust established in 1963 by Vivian Mowry, a 1910 graduate of the University of Wisconsin. Awards are made to English majors on the basis of “scholastic proficiency and active participation in campus activities.”

Dorothy Classen Urish Scholarship

Established by Jack Urish, a former English major at UW-Madison, in honor of his mother Dorothy, who was an English teacher in Stoughton, WI. The donor wishes to offer financial support toward the academic success of a senior English major.

English Undergraduate Scholarship

Established by Thomas J. and Barbara A. Johnson. It is awarded to an undergraduate English major who has shown how this award can support his or her academic success.

Lila Hicks Furber Scholarship

Established in 1995 by Lila Hicks Furber, who graduated with a degree in English from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1926. After graduation, Lila became a teacher.

Ineva Baldwin-Helen C. White Award

Present to senior women majoring in the Humanities who exemplify the sterling character of Helen C. White, a great teacher and scholar in the Department of English at the University of Wisconsin, on the basis of academic standing and a deep interest in the life of the community. Donor Ineva Baldwin felt that recipients should have demonstrated their interest in sharing their humanistic culture with their families and community.

First Generation College Student Scholarship

Recognizes the strength, commitment, and perspective of First Generation English majors. The English Department Scholarship is awarded on the basis of academic merit and an appreciation of the contributions First Generation students make in the classroom, the department, the university, and the wider community.

Mary Ellen Williams Golby Scholarship

This scholarship goes to an outstanding women-identified English major who is from a historically marginalized group.

Jeffrey Allen Steele Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded to support a deserving English major or majors with a preference for those studying American Literature.

Cyrena Pondrom Scholarship

This award was established by Julie Bogle who graduated from UW-Madison in 1985 with a BA, majoring in both English and History. While an undergrad, she was a student of Prof. Cyrena Pondrom, who taught modern English literature. Julie was fortunate enough to work with Prof. Pondrom on an independent study project focused on Virginia Woolf. It was a transformative experience. Being exposed to someone as brilliant and insightful as Prof. Pondrom was both intimidating and deeply enriching, truly a life-changing experience. After working in publishing for several years, Julie went on to attend UW Law School, graduating in 1999. Fifth of six children, Julie could afford to attend UW Madison as an undergrad only because she was given the Mary Brabyn Wackman Scholarship. She is happy to have the ability, through the UW Foundation, to provide a similar opportunity to young English majors today, and to honor the woman who had such a deep influence on her future.

List of Writing Prizes

The following writing prizes are available to undergraduates:

James T. Lewis Prizes

Established in 1968 and awarded annually for the two best essays written by first-year students in an English Department course (Creative writing courses are excluded.)  Each award is $125.

William F. Vilas Prizes

Established by Anna M. Vilas in 1912 and awarded annually for the two best essays written by undergraduates in English 245 or 300 – level and above English courses. The awards are $200 for the best essay and $100 for the second best essay.

The Standish Henning Shakespeare Prize

Established by Professor Andrew Weiner (emeritus) in recognition of his teacher and colleague Professor Standish Henning (emeritus). Awarded for the best essay written by an undergraduate in one of the English Department’s upper-level Shakespeare courses, 431 or 432.  The award is $100

English 100 Writing Awards

The English 100 program offers a variety of writing awards to students who either are currently enrolled in or have recently complete the course.  More information can be found on the program website .

Creative Writing Contests

The Creative Writing program awards numerous prizes for poetry and short fiction written by undergraduates.  More information can be found on the awards section of their website .

Outstanding Creative Media Project Award

The award recognizes the outstanding use of creative media to express ideas in unique ways, to re-imagine the work of English studies in English classes, and to take advantage of the affordances of emerging media.  Projects winning this award demonstrate an understanding of how creative media allow for novel modes of expression, communication, and persuasion.  The award is $125.

Data Analysis Award

This award recognizes an outstanding written project based on the collection and analysis of original data in a 300-level or above English major course.  The data may include surveys, linguistic data, or the quantitative analysis of digitized texts.  The award is $125.

Mary Ellen Williams Golby Essay Award

This $500 prize is awarded for the best essay or project by an English major that focuses on social justice, antiracism, or anti-ableism. The essay or project must be from a UW-Madison English course, and the applicant must be a woman-identified person.

McMywnn WIlliams Senior Thesis Award

This $1000 award is given to a student(s) for a senior thesis chapter that demonstrates exceptional writing and analytical skills.

Legion Wisconsin Scholarship Opportunities

Americanism & government scholarship test.

2024 Test Dates: March 4-15

Students are given the opportunity to receive recognition and scholarships by taking an online test comprised of 50 multiple-choice, true and false questions followed by an essay question of 300 words or less. The program is endorsed by the State Superintendent of Public Instruction and is open to any Wisconsin student in the 10th, 11th or 12th grade. Scholarships are:

• 10th Grade- 11 $250 Scholarships awarded
• 11th Grade- 11 $300 Scholarships awarded
• 12th Grade- 11 $750 Scholarships awarded

American Legion Legacy Scholarship Fund

The American Legion wants to ensure higher education is a possibility for children whose parents lost their lives while serving our country. Beginning with the 2017 award year, The American Legion expanded the scholarship to include children of VA-rated, post-9/11 veterans with a combined disability rating of 50 percent or higher. The American Legion and the Legion Riders offer support through the Legacy Scholarship Fund. 

Samsung Scholarship

Oratorical scholarships.

Samsung, a worldwide leader in electronics, endowed a scholarship fund of five million dollars to be administered by The American Legion. The endowment was made to show appreciation to U.S. veterans who came to the aid of Korea during its struggle against communist forces during the Korean War.

Eagle Scout of the Year

Participants in The American Legion Oratorical Contest develop leadership qualities, the ability to think and speak clearly and intelligently, and are better prepared to accept the duties and responsibilities for the rights and privileges of American citizenship.

The winner is eligible to receive a $10,000 scholarship to be awarded over a four-year period.

This awards $80,000 to students who live in Alaska, Arkansas, North Carolina, South Carolina, North Dakota, South Dakota, Georgia, Indiana, Iowa, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, West Virginia or Wisconsin. Applicants must be DACA, TPS, or meet the DACA criteria and have significant unmet financial need. WCO honors two scholarship winners; 2024 applications due May 1

DEFOREST, Wis. — Wisconsin Custom Operators, Inc. (WCO) recently awarded two scholarships to students pursuing further education. These students were selected based on leadership, civic engagement, academics, and volunteer activities related to agriculture. Students also submitted essays detailing their educational and vocational plans for the future. Scholarship winners are required to have ties to the WCO – either as a member, relative or employee of a member, or as a relative of a member-client. Students received a $1,000 or $1,500 scholarship.

“WCO understands that continued success of Wisconsin’s agricultural economy depends on a well-trained workforce,” said Joseph Sanford, chairman of the WCO Scholarship and Awards Committee and an assistant professor in the School of Agriculture at the University of Wisconsin–Platteville. “We also recognize that there are a growing number of training opportunities to fulfill this need, ranging from traditional college experiences to trade and apprenticeship programs.”

Kaleb Ellis of Independence, Wis.

Kaleb Ellis of Independence, Wis. was selected to receive the $1,500 Robert Hoerth Memorial Scholarship to honor WCO Past President Robert Hoerth who passed away unexpectedly in early 2020. This award is given to the most deserving scholarship applicant based on their alignment to the overall criteria. Kaleb recently earned his class A commercial driver’s license (CDL) and is already working toward his goal of starting a custom farming business. Last summer he joined a large custom farming crew and harvested wheat and other crops across Washington state and Idaho. Back in Wisconsin, Kaleb is an employee of Dan Val Farms LLC, a custom farming business owned by his uncle Chris Ellis and in his free time, Kaleb raises 85-100 Duroc hogs and rents 100 acres of row crop ground.

Emily Volmer of Hilbert, Wis.

Emily Volmer of Hilbert, Wis. received a $1,000 scholarship. She is a freshman at Drake University majoring in politics with plans to attend law school to pursue a career in public service and government. Emily credits her interest in U.S. history for sparking her passion in government and the reason she wants to work in public service. Emily is the daughter of Greg and Jennifer Volmer, owners of Midlakes Custom Services LLC and long-time members of WCO. From an early age, Emily developed a strong work ethic by helping in the family business assisting with miscellaneous tasks like picking rocks, transporting employees, and helping in the office.

In 2024, three (3) awards will be given: Two (2) $1,000 scholarships and the $1,500 Robert Hoerth Memorial Scholarship.

To be eligible, applicants may have direct family ties to a current WCO member or to an employee of a WCO member. Applicants may also be a member themselves. In addition, A WCO member may nominate a scholarship applicant who does not meet the above criteria. For example, if a WCO member has a customer who has an exemplary son, daughter, or employee, they are eligible to apply.

The program has been expanded to include any post-secondary training program including traditional college experiences and career training programs such CDL truck driver training courses, pesticide applicator training program/exam, or other industry relevant training programs. Individuals on a non-academic post-secondary education path searching for career opportunity in the industry such as joining a harvest crew or other apprenticeship program, are also encouraged to apply.

For the opportunity to win an $8,000 scholarship, submit a video or written essay about an individual you know personally (who lives in your community) who has inspired you and helped you build the confidence you need to achieve your goals.

The details

The 2024 Regions Riding Forward Scholarship Contest consists of four (4) separate Quarterly Contests - one for each calendar quarter of 2024. Regions is awarding four $8,000 scholarships through each Quarterly Contest.

Each Quarterly Contest has its own separate entry period, as provided in the chart below.

The entry deadline for each Quarterly Contest is 11:59:59 PM Central Time on the applicable Quarterly Contest period end date (set forth in the chart above).

How to enter, 1. complete an online quarterly contest application.

Enter the Regions Riding Forward Scholarship Contest by completing a Quarterly Contest application.  The second Quarterly Contest runs from April 1, 2024 through June 30, 2024. Complete and save all requested information. 

2. Prepare your Written Essay or Video Essay

For each Quarterly Contest, the topic of your Written Essay or Video Essay (your “Essay Topic”) must be an individual you know personally, who lives in your community. Your Written Essay or Video Essay must address how the individual you have selected as your Essay Topic has inspired you and helped you build the confidence you need to achieve your goals.

Written Essay and Video Essay submissions must meet all of the requirements described in the contest Official Rules. Your Written Essay or Video Essay must be (i) in English, (ii) your own original work, created solely by you (and without the use of any means of artificial intelligence (“AI”)), and (iii) the exclusive property of you alone.

Written Essays must be 500 words or less. You can write your Written Essay directly in the application, or you can copy and paste it into the appropriate area in the application form.

Video Essay submissions must be directly uploaded to the contest application site. Video Essays must be no more than 3 minutes in length and no larger than 1 GB. Only the following file formats are accepted: MP4, MPG, MOV, AVI, and WMV. Video Essays must not contain music of any kind nor display any illegal, explicit, or inappropriate material, and Video Essays must not be password protected or require a log-in/sign-in to view. You must upload your Video Essay to the application, and you may not submit your Video Essay in DVD or other physical form. (Video Essays submitted via mail will not be reviewed or returned.)

Tips to Record Quality Videos on a Smartphone:

• Don’t shoot vertical video. Computer monitors have landscape-oriented displays, so shoot your video horizontally.
• Use a tripod. Even small movements can make a big difference when editing.
• Don’t use zoom. If you need to get a close shot of the subject, move closer as zooming can cause pixilation.
• Use natural lighting. Smartphone lighting can wash out your video.

3. Review and submit your Quarterly Contest application

Review your information on your Quarterly Application (and check the spelling of a Written Essay) and submit your entry by 11:59:59 p.m. Central Time on the applicable Quarterly Contest period end date. The second Quarterly Contest period end date is June 30, 2024.

4. Await notification

Winning entries are selected by an independent panel of judges who are not affiliated with Regions. If your entry is selected as a Quarterly Contest winner, you will need to respond to ISTS with the required information.

Eligibility

For purposes of this contest:

• The “Eligible States” are defined as the following states: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas.
• An “accredited college” is defined as a nonprofit, two- or four-year college or university located within one of the fifty (50) United States or the District of Columbia.

To be eligible to enter this contest and to win an award in a Quarterly Contest, at the time of entry, you must:

• Be a legal U.S. resident of one of the Eligible States.
• Be age 16 or older.
• Have at least one (1) year (or at least 18 semester hours) remaining before college graduation.
• If you are not yet in college, begin your freshman year of college no later than the start of the 2025 – 2026 college academic school year.
• As of your most recent school enrollment period, have a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.0 in school (and if no GPA is provided at school, be in “good standing” or the equivalent thereof in school).

The 2024 Regions Riding Forward Scholarship Contest (the “Contest”) consists of four (4) separate quarterly contests (each a “Quarterly Contest”): (1) the “Q-1 Contest;” (2) the “Q-2 Contest;” (3) the “Q-3 Contest;” and (4) the “Q-4 Contest.” The Q-1 Contest begins on 02/01/24 and ends on 03/31/24; the Q-2 Contest begins on 04/01/24 and ends on 06/30/24; the Q-3 Contest begins on 07/01/24 and ends on 09/30/24; and the Q-4 Contest begins on 10/01/24 and ends on 12/31/24. (For each Quarterly Contest, entries must be submitted and received by 11:59:59 PM CT on the applicable Quarterly Contest period end date.) To enter and participate in a particular Quarterly Contest, at the time of entry, you must: (a) be a legal U.S. resident of one of the Eligible States; (b) be 16 years of age or older; (c) have at least one (1) year (or at least 18 semester hours) remaining before college graduation; (d) (if you are not yet in college) begin your freshman year of college no later than the start of the 2025 – 2026 college academic school year; and (e) as of your most recent school enrollment period, have a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.0 in school (and if no grade point average is provided at school, be in “good standing” or the equivalent thereof in school). (For purposes of Contest, the “Eligible States” are defined as the states of AL, AR, FL, GA, IA, IL, IN, KY, LA, MS, MO, NC, SC, TN and TX.) Wisconsin AP names Allie Ziebell girls high school basketball Player of the Year

Allie Ziebell’s potential as a basketball player became clear the day she accepted a scholarship offer from UConn women’s coach Geno Auriemma.

The Huskies have won 11 national championships since 1995 and remain one of the top teams in the country. The opportunity to become part of that isn’t extended to just anyone.

Ziebell’s production while playing at Neenah High School stood out enough to Auriemma that he needed the 6-foot guard to join him, and that helped propel her to the top of the mountain in state girls basketball.

Ziebell accepted that offer during her junior season and followed that up with a big enough senior campaign to be named the state’s unanimous player of the year by The Associated Press. The award and teams are selected by a panel of state sports writers.

Ziebell earned a spot on the second team as a sophomore and was voted a first-teamer her final two seasons with the Rockets, who were 24-6 and finished as WIAA Division 1 state runner-up after a 69-59 championship loss to Hartland Arrowhead.

Ziebell averaged 27.5 points and 8.7 rebounds per game and made 51 percent of her field goals. She also made 122 of 272 attempts from the 3-point line for 44.9 percent accuracy and made 87.5 percent of her free throws.

The Rockets beat Hartford 77-70 in the state semifinal round before falling to the Warhawks in the championship game. Ziebell scored 75 points and had 26 rebounds in those games and averaged 36.5 points during sectional and state games this season.

She finished her career with 2,819 points, 859 rebounds and 363 3-pointers.

Ziebell is joined on the first team by Arrowhead sophomore Natalie Kussow, McFarland senior Teagan Mallegni, Verona senior Taylor Stremlow and Pewaukee junior Amy Terrian.

The girls coach of the year is Pewaukee’s Jim Reuter after leading the Pirates (29-1) to their first state championship.

Pewaukee was Division 2 state runner-up to Green Bay Preble in both 2022 and 2023 before facing off with the Tritons again in this year’s title game. Pewaukee beat Notre Dame 60-52 and stopped the Tritons from winning their fourth championship in a row.

The Pirates beat Notre Dame twice this season and added an 80-61 win over Division 1 state champion Arrowhead. Pewaukee also beat Fox Valley Association champion Hortonville and Division 2 sectional finalist McFarland.

Pewaukee’s lone loss came at the hands of Nazareth Academy (Ill.), which won 44-43 and went on to place second in its Class 4A state tournament.

Reuter’s teams have posted a 143-24 record during his six seasons.
