Field courses, organizational behaviour and human resources (obhr).

Organizational Behaviour and Human Resources (OBHR) focuses on the understanding and management of behaviour in the workplace. Students develop a deep appreciation for the research and insight of subjects dealing with the “human” side of work, such as individual-level topics (e.g., recruitment, selection, job analysis, training and development, learning, motivation, performance), relational topics (e.g., relationships between individuals at work, mentors-protégés, leaders-followers, teamwork, conflict management, diversity, equity) and organizational-level topics (e.g., organizational learning, change management, compensation systems, industrial relations) as well as topics from complementary disciplines such as psychology and sociology.

Here is a list of our current faculty members. We encourage all potential applicants to visit our homepages to learn more about the research we are conducting. Google Scholar and other databases (e.g., ABI/INFORM, PsychINFO) are also excellent ways to learn about our publications. We also encourage applicants to contact us personally so that we can ensure the best possible fit for our common research interests.

Program overview.

Developed in response to the growing need for skilled graduates specialized in human resources, the Human Resources Management – Canadian Context graduate certificate program is specifically designed to prepare international students with the knowledge, skills and expertise required to understand human resources practices in Canada and to work within the Canadian industry.

From recruitment and selection to training and development, a career in human resources (HR) requires a focus on both strategy and people. Skill, knowledge and ability in human resource planning, occupational health and safety, compensation, hiring, employee development, labour relations and managerial accounting enable HR professionals to contribute to business success in an increasingly competitive global marketplace while looking after the organization’s most important asset – its employees.

Courses in this program immerse international students in a specialized learning environment that encourages them to think critically to solve complex problems by combining artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, online simulations, international case competitions, real-world case studies and interaction with industry professionals to support their future careers in the industry.

This program includes all nine courses required to meet the academic component of either the Certified Human Resources Professional Designation (CHRP) or the Certified Human Resources Leader (CHRL) designation. Students who receive an average grade of 70 per cent in these courses and maintain a minimum grade of 65 per cent in each course, meet the coursework requirements to write the Comprehensive Knowledge Exam 1 (CKE1) and Comprehensive Knowledge Exam 2 (CKE2) – a significant step towards achieving the CHRP or CHRL designation in Ontario. For further information regarding designations granted by the Human Resources Professionals Association, please visit  www.hrpa.ca .

Through a variety of specialized courses, an Orientation to Canada and Canadian Business first semester and a mandatory 14-week, 420-hour work-term placement within a Canadian human resources organization, students will be equipped with the knowledge and skills required to successfully apply their skills in the actual field. The work-term placement provides hands-on learning, valuable career experience and an opportunity for the graduate to move into a human resources management role. DC is dedicated to assisting students in securing their work-term placement and supports them throughout the process.

Technology Recommendations

To help students have the best remote learning experience possible, Durham College’s IT Services department has identified technology recommendations for each program based on course needs and software requirements. While not required, students may want to consider these suggestions if they are purchasing a computer or laptop for the upcoming academic year.

Processor : i3 RAM : 4GB Storage : 256GB SSD Operating System:  Microsoft Windows 10 Professional or Education x64 SP1 Internet Browser : Internet Explorer 11 or Google Chrome (newest version) or Firefox (newest version) Network Adapter : 802.11ac 2.4/5 GHz wireless adapter Camera:  Webcam / built-in camera Internet connection

Questions regarding technology recommendations can be directed to the IT Service Desk  or the school office .

Mandatory work term

Students gain work-integrated learning experience in a mandatory work term in the final semester of the program. Students must work in a full-time, paid position (at least 30 hours per week) for a minimum total of 420 hours throughout the four-month semester. Positions must be directly related to the student’s current Durham College program and approved by the college. To be eligible for the mandatory work term, students must maintain their academic eligibility in each of the three prior academic semesters.

While the work term is mandatory, employment is not guaranteed and students are expected to conduct a thorough and active job search, both independently and with the supports provided by the Experiential Learning Hub and their co-operative education coordinator.

Work term documentation must be signed by the student, their employer, and the college to authorize the position as students are expected to be participating in productive work rather than merely observing. Progress on the job will be monitored throughout the term by the college.

Program sequence

May intake:, academic eligibility.

Students must maintain all academic requirements to be eligible to participate in the work terms. This includes GPA and course completion requirements:

Mandatory work term: students must secure a work term position that is full-time, directly related to their current program, and approved by the college as a suitable work term, by the published start date. Students who do not secure an appropriate position by the published start date or who do not complete all required student and employer documentation will be ineligible for graduation from this program design. There is no alternative option to the mandatory work term available.

Administrative fee

In addition to tuition, ancillary and incidental fees, students in this program will have an administrative fee of $475 assessed to their accounts during the academic semester prior to the scheduled work term. The administrative fee goes to support the broad array of support services provided to mandatory work term students. These services are dedicated to support student success.

Working in Canada

In order to work in Canada for the mandatory work term, you must apply for and receive a Social Insurance Number (SIN). To be eligible for a SIN, you must have a study permit with a condition permitting employment.

A co-op work permit is also required. If you asked for a co-op work permit when you applied for a study permit, you should have received it together with your study permit at a Canadian border. You are required to have a co-op work permit before you start your work term. If you did not receive your co-op work permit but you need one, you must apply for it as soon as you arrive in Canada; the International Education office can provide support with this application.
