Listen: we know homework isn’t fun, but it is a good way to reinforce the ideas and concepts you’ve learned in class. But what if you’re really struggling with your homework assignments?

If you’ve looked online for a little extra help with your take-home assignments, you’ve probably stumbled across websites claiming to provide the homework help and answers students need to succeed . But can homework help sites really make a difference? And if so, which are the best homework help websites you can use?

Below, we answer these questions and more about homework help websites–free and paid. We’ll go over:

  • The basics of homework help websites
  • The cost of homework help websites
  • The five best homework websites out there
  • The pros and cons of using these websites for homework help
  • The line between “learning” and “cheating” when using online homework help
  • Tips for getting the most out of a homework help website

So let’s get started!

The Basics About Homework Help Websites–Free and Paid

Homework help websites are designed to help you complete your homework assignments, plain and simple.

What Makes a Homework Help Site Worth Using

Most of the best sites allow users to ask questions and then provide an answer (or multiple possible answers) and explanation in seconds. In some instances, you can even send a photo of a particular assignment or problem instead of typing the whole thing out!

Homework help sites also offer more than just help answering homework questions. Common services provided are Q&A with experts, educational videos, lectures, practice tests and quizzes, learning modules, math solving tools, and proofreading help. Homework help sites can also provide textbook solutions (i.e. answers to problems in tons of different textbooks your school might be using), one-on-one tutoring, and peer-to-peer platforms that allow you to discuss subjects you’re learning about with your fellow students.

And best of all, nearly all of them offer their services 24/7, including tutoring!

What You Should Should Look Out For

When it comes to homework help, there are lots–and we mean lots –of scam sites out there willing to prey on desperate students. Before you sign up for any service, make sure you read reviews to ensure you’re working with a legitimate company.

A word to the wise: the more a company advertises help that veers into the territory of cheating, the more likely it is to be a scam. The best homework help websites are going to help you learn the concepts you’ll need to successfully complete your homework on your own. (We’ll go over the difference between “homework help” and “cheating” a little later!)

body-gold-piggy-bank-money

You don't need a golden piggy bank to use homework help websites. Some provide low or no cost help for students like you!

How Expensive Are the Best Homework Help Websites?

First of all, just because a homework help site costs money doesn’t mean it’s a good service. Likewise, just because a homework help website is free doesn’t mean the help isn’t high quality. To find the best websites, you have to take a close look at the quality and types of information they provide!

When it comes to paid homework help services, the prices vary pretty widely depending on the amount of services you want to subscribe to. Subscriptions can cost anywhere from $2 to $150 dollars per month, with the most expensive services offering several hours of one-on-one tutoring with a subject expert per month.

The 5 Best Homework Help Websites

So, what is the best homework help website you can use? The answer is that it depends on what you need help with.

The best homework help websites are the ones that are reliable and help you learn the material. They don’t just provide answers to homework questions–they actually help you learn the material.

That’s why we’ve broken down our favorite websites into categories based on who they’re best for . For instance, the best website for people struggling with math might not work for someone who needs a little extra help with science, and vice versa.

Keep reading to find the best homework help website for you!

Best Free Homework Help Site: Khan Academy

  • Price: Free!
  • Best for: Practicing tough material

Not only is Khan Academy free, but it’s full of information and can be personalized to suit your needs. When you set up your account , you choose which courses you need to study, and Khan Academy sets up a personal dashboard of instructional videos, practice exercises, and quizzes –with both correct and incorrect answer explanations–so you can learn at your own pace.

As an added bonus, it covers more course topics than many other homework help sites, including several AP classes.

Runner Up: Brainly.com offers a free service that allows you to type in questions and get answers and explanations from experts. The downside is that you’re limited to two answers per question and have to watch ads.

Best Paid Homework Help Site: Chegg

  • Price: $14.95 to $19.95 per month
  • Best for: 24/7 homework assistance

This service has three main parts . The first is Chegg Study, which includes textbook solutions, Q&A with subject experts, flashcards, video explanations, a math solver, and writing help. The resources are thorough, and reviewers state that Chegg answers homework questions quickly and accurately no matter when you submit them.

Chegg also offers textbook rentals for students who need access to textbooks outside of their classroom. Finally, Chegg offers Internship and Career Advice for students who are preparing to graduate and may need a little extra help with the transition out of high school.

Another great feature Chegg provides is a selection of free articles geared towards helping with general life skills, like coping with stress and saving money. Chegg’s learning modules are comprehensive, and they feature solutions to the problems in tons of different textbooks in a wide variety of subjects.

Runner Up: Bartleby offers basically the same services as Chegg for $14.99 per month. The reason it didn’t rank as the best is based on customer reviews that say user questions aren’t answered quite as quickly on this site as on Chegg. Otherwise, this is also a solid choice!

body-photomath-logo-2

Best Site for Math Homework Help: Photomath

  • Price: Free (or $59.99 per year for premium services)
  • Best for: Explaining solutions to math problems

This site allows you to t ake a picture of a math problem, and instantly pulls up a step-by-step solution, as well as a detailed explanation of the concept. Photomath also includes animated videos that break down mathematical concepts to help you better understand and remember them.

The basic service is free, but for an additional fee you can get extra study tools and learn additional strategies for solving common math problems.

Runner Up: KhanAcademy offers in-depth tutorials that cover complex math topics for free, but you won’t get the same tailored help (and answers!) that Photomath offers.

Best Site for English Homework Help: Princeton Review Academic Tutoring

  • Price: $40 to $153 per month, depending on how many hours of tutoring you want
  • Best for: Comprehensive and personalized reading and writing help

While sites like Grammarly and Sparknotes help you by either proofreading what you write via an algorithm or providing book summaries, Princeton Review’s tutors provide in-depth help with vocabulary, literature, essay writing and development, proofreading, and reading comprehension. And unlike other services, you’ll have the chance to work with a real person to get help.

The best part is that you can get on-demand English (and ESL) tutoring from experts 24/7. That means you can get help whenever you need it, even if you’re pulling an all-nighter!

This is by far the most expensive homework site on this list, so you’ll need to really think about what you need out of a homework help website before you commit. One added benefit is that the subscription covers over 80 other subjects, including AP classes, which can make it a good value if you need lots of help!

body-studtypool-logo

Best Site for STEM Homework Help: Studypool

  • Best for: Science homework help
  • Price: Varies; you’ll pay for each question you submit

When it comes to science homework help, there aren’t a ton of great resources out there. The best of the bunch is Studypool, and while it has great reviews, there are some downsides as well.

Let’s start with the good stuff. Studypool offers an interesting twist on the homework help formula. After you create a free account, you can submit your homework help questions, and tutors will submit bids to answer your questions. You’ll be able to select the tutor–and price point–that works for you, then you’ll pay to have your homework question answered. You can also pay a small fee to access notes, lectures, and other documents that top tutors have uploaded.

The downside to Studypool is that the pricing is not transparent . There’s no way to plan for how much your homework help will cost, especially if you have lots of questions! Additionally, it’s not clear how tutors are selected, so you’ll need to be cautious when you choose who you’d like to answer your homework questions.

What Are the Pros and Cons of Using Homework Help Sites?

Homework help websites can be a great resource if you’re struggling in a subject, or even if you just want to make sure that you’re really learning and understanding topics and ideas that you’re interested in. But, there are some possible drawbacks if you don’t use these sites responsibly.

We’ll go over the good–and the not-so-good–aspects of getting online homework help below.

3 Pros of Using Homework Help Websites

First, let’s take a look at the benefits.

#1: Better Grades Beyond Homework

This is a big one! Getting outside help with your studies can improve your understanding of concepts that you’re learning, which translates into better grades when you take tests or write essays.

Remember: homework is designed to help reinforce the concepts you learned in class. If you just get easy answers without learning the material behind the problems, you may not have the tools you need to be successful on your class exams
or even standardized tests you’ll need to take for college.

#2: Convenience

One of the main reasons that online homework help is appealing is because it’s flexible and convenient. You don’t have to go to a specific tutoring center while they’re open or stay after school to speak with your teacher. Instead, you can access helpful resources wherever you can access the internet, whenever you need them.

This is especially true if you tend to study at off hours because of your extracurriculars, work schedule, or family obligations. Sites that offer 24/7 tutoring can give you the extra help you need if you can’t access the free resources that are available at your school.

#3: Variety

Not everyone learns the same way. Maybe you’re more of a visual learner, but your teacher mostly does lectures. Or maybe you learn best by listening and taking notes, but you’re expected to learn something just from reading the textbook .

One of the best things about online homework help is that it comes in a variety of forms. The best homework help sites offer resources for all types of learners, including videos, practice activities, and even one-on-one discussions with real-life experts.

This variety can also be a good thing if you just don’t really resonate with the way a concept is being explained (looking at you, math textbooks!).

body_stophand

Not so fast. There are cons to homework help websites, too. Get to know them below!

3 Cons of Using Homework Help Websites

Now, let’s take a look at the drawbacks of online homework help.

#1: Unreliable Info

This can be a real problem. In addition to all the really good homework help sites, there are a whole lot of disreputable or unreliable sites out there. The fact of the matter is that some homework help sites don’t necessarily hire people who are experts in the subjects they’re talking about. In those cases, you may not be getting the accurate, up-to-date, and thorough information you need.

Additionally, even the great sites may not be able to answer all of your homework questions. This is especially true if the site uses an algorithm or chatbot to help students
or if you’re enrolled in an advanced or college-level course. In these cases, working with your teacher or school-provided tutors are probably your best option.

#2: No Clarification

This depends on the service you use, of course. But the majority of them provide free or low-cost help through pre-recorded videos. Watching videos or reading info online can definitely help you with your homework
but you can’t ask questions or get immediate feedback if you need it .

#3: Potential For Scamming

Like we mentioned earlier, there are a lot of homework help websites out there, and lots of them are scams. The review comments we read covered everything from outdated or wrong information, to misleading claims about the help provided, to not allowing people to cancel their service after signing up.

No matter which site you choose to use, make sure you research and read reviews before you sign up–especially if it’s a paid service!

body-cheat-cheating-cc0

When Does “Help” Become “Cheating”?

Admittedly, whether using homework help websites constitutes cheating is a bit of a grey area. For instance, is it “help” when a friend reads your essay for history class and corrects your grammar, or is it “cheating”? The truth is, not everyone agrees on when “help” crosses the line into “cheating .” When in doubt, it can be a good idea to check with your teacher to see what they think about a particular type of help you want to get.

That said, a general rule of thumb to keep in mind is to make sure that the assignment you turn in for credit is authentically yours . It needs to demonstrate your own thoughts and your own current abilities. Remember: the point of every homework assignment is to 1) help you learn something, and 2) show what you’ve learned.

So if a service answers questions or writes essays for you, there’s a good chance using it constitutes cheating.

Here’s an example that might help clarify the difference for you. Brainstorming essay ideas with others or looking online for inspiration is “help” as long as you write the essay yourself. Having someone read it and give you feedback about what you need to change is also help, provided you’re the one that makes the changes later.

But copying all or part of an essay you find online or having someone write (or rewrite) the whole thing for you would be “cheating.” The same is true for other subjects. Ultimately, if you’re not generating your own work or your own answers, it’s probably cheating.

5 Tips for Finding the Best Homework Help Websites for You

Now that you know some of our favorite homework help websites, free and paid, you can start doing some additional research on your own to decide which services might work best for you! Here are some top tips for choosing a homework help website.

Tip 1: Decide How You Learn Best

Before you decide which site or sites you’re going to use for homework help, y ou should figure out what kind of learning style works for you the most. Are you a visual learner? Then choose a site that uses lots of videos to help explain concepts. If you know you learn best by actually doing tasks, choose a site that provides lots of practice exercises.

Tip 2: Determine Which Subjects You Need Help With

Just because a homework help site is good overall doesn’t mean that it’s equally good for every subject. If you only need help in math, choose a site that specializes in that area. But if history is where you’re struggling, a site that specializes in math won’t be much help. So make sure to choose a site that you know provides high-quality help in the areas you need it most.

Tip 3: Decide How Much One-On-One Help You Need

This is really about cost-effectiveness. If you learn well on your own by reading and watching videos, a free site like Khan Academy is a good choice. But if you need actual tutoring, or to be able to ask questions and get personalized answers from experts, a paid site that provides that kind of service may be a better option.

Tip 4: Set a Budget

If you decide you want to go with a paid homework help website, set a budget first . The prices for sites vary wildly, and the cost to use them can add up quick.

Tip 5: Read the Reviews

Finally, it’s always a good idea to read actual reviews written by the people using these homework sites. You’ll learn the good, the bad, and the ugly of what the users’ experiences have been. This is especially true if you intend to subscribe to a paid service. You’ll want to make sure that users think it’s worth the price overall!

Easy-peasy-lemon-squeezy! 8. Oh, we know you have more problems to solve! Now, back to Step 1.

HOW TO USE AIR MATH HOMEWORK HELPER (WEB) TO THE FULL (AIR MATH: 101) 1. Fire up that laptop/desktop PC. 2. Stuck on your math homework / school assignment / test prep? It’s okay to be completely clueless. 3. First things first, go to the Chrome Web Store and download our AIR MATH Chrome extension. 4. All done? Now, go back to your geometry problem that you were stuck on, then right-click on your mouse. 5. You will see the AIR MATH extension show up on the menu. Click on it! 6. Crop the math question that you need to solve, and then click on the "Search" button that shows up. 7. Ta-da! There's your answer!

1. Prepare a math problem; any equation or word problem. Geometry? Algebra? Calculus? Just bring it on! 2. When you first open the AIR MATH app, the home screen will show you a camera screen. 3. Position your smartphone close to the problem and place the problem within the guideline, then snap! 4. Your problem wasn't scanned within the guideline? Don't you worry! After you photo scan your problem, you can adjust the guideline to crop the part that you need from the question. 5. Our AI tech will then auto-recognize the problem and come up with possible answers in seconds. It'll come up with different ways of solving the problem. Tap on each solution and choose the answer that best fits your need.

Sure thing! In order to use the photos that you already have, just give permission to use your Photo Library and you're all set! When you first enter the app, you will see the camera screen, and on the top middle part, you will see two icons; an image icon and a flash icon. Tap on the image icon on the left and you will be able to choose the pictures that you want to share from your Photo Library. Just remember, it has to be a math question or else AIR MATH Homework Helper won't recognize the picture!

For now, you can only upload one image at a time. This is because AIR MATH can recognize one problem at a time. It cannot recognize and solve multiple questions at the same time. For example, say you have a set of geometry questions that you need answers to, and you have taken photos of each question separately, then you must upload the photo one at a time. Uploading multiple math questions in one photo won't work either!

Once you take a photo and scan the problem you're having trouble with, AIR MATH will come up with possible solutions to your question. Look through each solution and see if any of it matches your need. If the solution is too difficult to understand or doesn't quite match your question, hit that "Ask Expert Tutors" button below the solutions. It may take up to five minutes before you're connected to a tutor. 1:1 live chat will be available once you're connected and you can ask the tutor if you have any questions regarding the problem. Once your tutor has given you an answer and you feel that the given solution is good enough, you can tap on the "End Chat" button to close the session. That's all there is! That wasn't so hard, was it?

Oh, so you still haven't heard? Our AIR MATH app is powered by AI and all answers are machine-learned. The math data that have been accumulated within the app enables AIR MATH to continuously evolve and develop - meaning, all answers to your math questions and problems are calculated and solved using our AI technology. Of course, the trustworthiness is guaranteed! Have faith, my friend!

A BIG YES! Our tutors are all certified tutors who have gone through a very strict screening, testing, and background check-ups. We also consistently do quality checks on their answers to the math problems that they give to our users. If you find any of their answers incorrect or inadequate, you can also rate them and report them to us and we will take necessary actions accordingly. So, don't you worry about a thing!

Basic Math Pre-Algebra: Arithmetic, proportional, integers, fractions, decimal numbers, powers, roots, factors, complex numbers Algebra: Linear equations/inequalities, quadratic equations/inequalities, logarithms, functions, graphing, polynomials Geometry: Plane/solid geometry, constructions, measurement formulas, formal proofs Precalculus: Identities, logarithmic functions, exponential functions, trigonometric functions, series and sequences, probability, statistics, limits, derivatives Trigonometry: Circular and periodic functions Calculus: Series, limits, derivatives, integration, differentiation Statistics: Combinations, permutation, factorials Discrete Mathematics Finite Mathematics Differential Equations Business Math BAAM! 😎

Yes, for sure! AIR MATH's AI recognition technology enables it to recognize not only the ordinary equations of various subjects but word problems as well. It will read your word problem and provide a few options of step-by-step solutions for you to choose from. Easy like a breeze!

Urr... Yes and no? You can photo scan your handwritten problem and ask for a solution to it, but if you mean if there is a handwriting feature to write out the question on the app directly, then it's a no. If we see that more and more users are asking for the said feature, we will definitely take it into consideration. That's a pinky promise.

Sadly, no. AIR MATH's tutor system does not allow a student to designate or reconnect to a certain tutor to solve your math problem. However, if we see a growing need for this, we will definitely take this into consideration.

Oh, yikes! I'm glad that you liked our tutor, but unfortunately, we do not give out personal information of the tutors, and so it's not possible to contact a specific tutor. But the good news is, that all other tutors are equally good at solving math problems! You may be connected to a random tutor, but all tutors that work with AIR MATH are certified, tested, and monitored constantly. You can trust them and ask any and every math questions you have. They'll give you a solution to your problem in a zap!

It's actually pretty simple. Just open the app, position your math problem that you need to solve within the guideline, then snap and tap to upload your question. It's okay if your problem was not photo scanned exactly within the guideline, because once you take a picture of it, you can later adjust and crop the math problem. Once you upload your math question, AIR MATH will come up with possible solutions to your problem in about 10 seconds. Now, wasn't that easy?.

No, no one but yourself can see the math questions that you have asked on AIR MATH... We do, however, accumulate all the math problems that all our users have asked so that our AI technology can use them as databases and become even faster when giving answers!

Well, that really depends. Our AIR MATH math homework helper/solver app itself only uses one system language: English. However, our tutors are from all across the globe and if you happen to use any of their languages, well, then that's up to you to decide if you want to use another language when asking for step-by-step solutions to your math problems from the tutors via live chat sessions. (We respect diversity!)

The Bookmarks feature enables you to literally "bookmark" any step-by-step solutions that you receive from AI regarding your math questions. Open AIR MATH, photo scan a problem that you're stuck with, then tap and upload. Wait for 10 seconds until you're given a step-by-step solution by AIR MATH AI. Once your answer is provided, you will see the "Bookmarks" icon at the top right corner along with the "Share" icon (second to far right). Tapping on the Bookmarks icon will add that answer in your Bookmarks tab. Later, when you want to go back to see this problem again, tap on the "History" tab on the bottom right corner, then you will see "Answers" and "Bookmarks" tabs. Go to the "Bookmarks" tab and you will see the step-by-step solutions to the math questions that you have added.

AIR MATH math homework helper/solver app is currently available both on iOS and Android. For iOS, any devices running on versions 14.4 and up can download and use the AIR MATH app. You can now also use AIR MATH on the web as well as a Chrome extension! We will be continuing to add support for new versions as well, so please stay tuned!

Tickets/ PASS

The ticket system is the actual key player of AIR MATH Homework Helper app that helps you get through with your math homework. There are three types of tickets on AIR MATH: Search tickets, Question tickets and Writing tickets. Search tickets are used for searching for answers to a math problem, and Question tickets are used for asking for more precise solutions to math problems to tutors. Writing tickets are used for supercharging your essay. The rule is simple: one ticket per one question or essay!

Yes, there is! Each ticket has its own expiration date, so please be sure to check it from the Ticket page! Tickets with earliest expiration dates will be used up first.

You can earn extra free tickets by inviting new friends to download and try out AIR MATH Homework Helper app. Once your friend downloads and enters your invitation code, free tickets will be given right away. That's not all! You'll be rewarded with free tickets if you check-in on a daily basis! Check out the Ticket page for more details!

First, enter the app, then open your Ticket page. You will see your Friend Invitation Code. Copy the code and share it with your friends. When your friends download the app and enter your invitation code when signing up, you will be automatically given a set of free tickets!

Not to worry! Being asked to retake a math question does not mean that you will have to use another question ticket. The question ticket that you have used up for your math problem (which you also need to retake a photo of) will be returned and you can use it for the retake!

Ticket refills are there to allow you to purchase extra question tickets when necessary. If you are already on a subscription, there's going to be a little benefit when purchasing a refill!

AIR MATH Pass is our subscription system which gives out unlimited search tickets and a set of question tickets. There are various options to your subscription period; from 1 month plan to 1 year plan! Come take a look at our subscription plans and select whichever that best suits your interest!

Tech issue / Troubleshooting

This may be because the type of question that you asked has not been asked before, therefore the question is not in our database as of yet. Please try the "Ask Expert Tutors" feature and ask for a step-by-step solution directly. If this is not about our AI not being able to recognize your problem, then please check to see if your AIR MATH app is running on the latest version and take a screenshot or a screen recording and send it to us via "Contact Us."

Oof! So sorry to hear that you're experiencing malfunctions with our app! In this case, please first check to see if your AIR MATH app is running on the latest version. Then, please take a screenshot or screen recording of the problem that you're experiencing and send it to us via "Contact Us." It'd be certainly helpful if you can describe the issue in detail (e.g. during what stage the app froze or tapping on a certain button caused a crash, etc.) so that our developers will know where to look into.

The numbers do not add up for mathematics homework, according to a new study

by University of South Australia

math homework

Supporting kids with math homework is a common afterschool activity. But beyond the basics, new curricula and teaching strategies are making it harder for parents to help and it's taking a serious toll on children's confidence and learning.

In a study from the University of South Australia, researchers have found that mathematics homework can sometimes cause more harm than good.

Exploring how homework policies and practices affect families, researchers found that mathematics homework could inadvertently affect a child when it often:

  • was too difficult for a child to complete independently, and/or with the support of a parent
  • required significant support from parents and seeped into family time
  • resulted in a negative experience for the child and their parent, leading to negative associations with mathematics and potentially students' disengagement from the subject
  • generated feelings of despair, stress, and negativity among parents who were unable to help
  • made students feel inadequate when they struggled with the work.

UniSA researcher Associate Professor Lisa O'Keeffe says such negativity around mathematics has broad implications.

"Homework has long been accepted as a practice that reinforces children's learning and improves academic success," Assoc. Prof. O'Keeffe says.

"But when it is too complex for a student to complete even with parent support, it raises the question as to why it was set as a homework task in the first place. We know that parents play a key role in supporting their children with schooling and homework. When children need help, their parents are often the first people they turn to.

"But many parents are unsure of the current mathematics strategies and approaches that their children are learning as these have changed a lot since they were at school. Like many things, mathematics teaching has evolved over time. But when parents realize that their tried-and-true methods are different to those which their children are learning, it can be hard to adapt, and this can add undue pressure. When children see their parents struggle with mathematics homework, or where mathematics homework becomes a shared site of frustration for families, it can lead to negativity across generations.

"For example, we might hear adults saying things like, 'I wasn't very good at math, so my child won't be either.' Negative interactions with mathematics, and negative discourses like these can lead to reduced confidence, reduced self-efficacy, and can negatively affect children's resilience, persistence, and ultimately their inclination to continue with mathematics."

Any decline in STEM subjects such as math can have long-term impacts for Australia's future. Statistics show that fewer than 10% of students are studying a higher level of math, with math capabilities declining more than 25 points (15-year-olds in 2022 scored at a level that would have been expected of 14-year-olds, 20 years earlier).

Co-researcher, UniSA's Dr. Sarah McDonald, says the research also identified gendered biases.

"Our research showed that it was overwhelmingly mothers who were responsible for managing children's homework. And they often experience frustration or despair when they were unable to understand the math problems," Dr. McDonald says. "When mothers find math hard, there is concern that this may demonstrate to their children , especially their girls, that this is not an area in which they would naturally excel.

"The last thing teachers want to do is disadvantage girls in developing potentially strong mathematical identities. We need a greater understanding of homework policies and expectations.

"The experiences of the families in our study do not support the often-quoted claim by researchers that that homework has potential non-academic benefits such as fostering independence, creating positive character traits, developing good organizational skills, or virtues such as self-discipline and responsibility."

The Simplest Math Problem Could Be Unsolvable

The Collatz conjecture has plagued mathematicians for decades—so much so that professors warn their students away from it

By Manon Bischoff

Mathematicians have been hoping for a flash of insight to solve the Collatz conjecture.

At first glance, the problem seems ridiculously simple. And yet experts have been searching for a solution in vain for decades. According to mathematician Jeffrey Lagarias, number theorist Shizuo Kakutani told him that during the cold war, “for about a month everybody at Yale [University] worked on it, with no result. A similar phenomenon happened when I mentioned it at the University of Chicago. A joke was made that this problem was part of a conspiracy to slow down mathematical research in the U.S.”

The Collatz conjecture—the vexing puzzle Kakutani described—is one of those supposedly simple problems that people tend to get lost in. For this reason, experienced professors often warn their ambitious students not to get bogged down in it and lose sight of their actual research.

The conjecture itself can be formulated so simply that even primary school students understand it. Take a natural number. If it is odd, multiply it by 3 and add 1; if it is even, divide it by 2. Proceed in the same way with the result x : if x is odd, you calculate 3 x + 1; otherwise calculate x / 2. Repeat these instructions as many times as possible, and, according to the conjecture, you will always end up with the number 1.

For example: If you start with 5, you have to calculate 5 x 3 + 1, which results in 16. Because 16 is an even number, you have to halve it, which gives you 8. Then 8 / 2 = 4, which, when divided by 2, is 2—and 2 / 2 = 1. The process of iterative calculation brings you to the end after five steps.

Of course, you can also continue calculating with 1, which gives you 4, then 2 and then 1 again. The calculation rule leads you into an inescapable loop. Therefore 1 is seen as the end point of the procedure.

Bubbles with numbers and arrows show Collatz conjecture sequences

Following iterative calculations, you can begin with any of the numbers above and will ultimately reach 1.

It’s really fun to go through the iterative calculation rule for different numbers and look at the resulting sequences. If you start with 6: 6 → 3 → 10 → 5 → 16 → 8 → 4 → 2 → 1. Or 42: 42 → 21 → 64 → 32 → 16 → 8 → 4 → 2 → 1. No matter which number you start with, you always seem to end up with 1. There are some numbers, such as 27, where it takes quite a long time (27 → 82 → 41 → 124 → 62 → 31 → 94 → 47 → 142 → 71 → 214 → 107 → 322 → 161 → 484 → 242 → 121 → 364 → 182 → 91 → 274 → ...), but so far the result has always been 1. (Admittedly, you have to be patient with the starting number 27, which requires 111 steps.)

But strangely there is still no mathematical proof that the Collatz conjecture is true. And that absence has mystified mathematicians for years.

The origin of the Collatz conjecture is uncertain, which is why this hypothesis is known by many different names. Experts speak of the Syracuse problem, the Ulam problem, the 3 n + 1 conjecture, the Hasse algorithm or the Kakutani problem.

German mathematician Lothar Collatz became interested in iterative functions during his mathematics studies and investigated them. In the early 1930s he also published specialist articles on the subject , but the explicit calculation rule for the problem named after him was not among them. In the 1950s and 1960s the Collatz conjecture finally gained notoriety when mathematicians Helmut Hasse and Shizuo Kakutani, among others, disseminated it to various universities, including Syracuse University.

Like a siren song, this seemingly simple conjecture captivated the experts. For decades they have been looking for proof that after repeating the Collatz procedure a finite number of times, you end up with 1. The reason for this persistence is not just the simplicity of the problem: the Collatz conjecture is related to other important questions in mathematics. For example, such iterative functions appear in dynamic systems, such as models that describe the orbits of planets. The conjecture is also related to the Riemann conjecture, one of the oldest problems in number theory.

Empirical Evidence for the Collatz Conjecture

In 2019 and 2020 researchers checked all numbers below 2 68 , or about 3 x 10 20 numbers in the sequence, in a collaborative computer science project . All numbers in that set fulfill the Collatz conjecture as initial values. But that doesn’t mean that there isn’t an outlier somewhere. There could be a starting value that, after repeated Collatz procedures, yields ever larger values that eventually rise to infinity. This scenario seems unlikely, however, if the problem is examined statistically.

An odd number n is increased to 3 n + 1 after the first step of the iteration, but the result is inevitably even and is therefore halved in the following step. In half of all cases, the halving produces an odd number, which must therefore be increased to 3 n + 1 again, whereupon an even result is obtained again. If the result of the second step is even again, however, you have to divide the new number by 2 twice in every fourth case. In every eighth case, you must divide it by 2 three times, and so on.

In order to evaluate the long-term behavior of this sequence of numbers , Lagarias calculated the geometric mean from these considerations in 1985 and obtained the following result: ( 3 / 2 ) 1/2 x ( 3 ⁄ 4 ) 1/4 x ( 3 ⁄ 8 ) 1/8 · ... = 3 ⁄ 4 . This shows that the sequence elements shrink by an average factor of 3 ⁄ 4 at each step of the iterative calculation rule. It is therefore extremely unlikely that there is a starting value that grows to infinity as a result of the procedure.

There could be a starting value, however, that ends in a loop that is not 4 → 2 → 1. That loop could include significantly more numbers, such that 1 would never be reached.

Such “nontrivial” loops can be found, for example, if you also allow negative integers for the Collatz conjecture: in this case, the iterative calculation rule can end not only at –2 → –1 → –2 → ... but also at –5 → –14 → –7 → –20 → –10 → –5 → ... or –17 → –50 → ... → –17 →.... If we restrict ourselves to natural numbers, no nontrivial loops are known to date—which does not mean that they do not exist. Experts have now been able to show that such a loop in the Collatz problem, however, would have to consist of at least 186 billion numbers .

A plot lays out the starting number of the Collatz sequence on the x-axis with the total length of the completed sequence on the y-axis

The length of the Collatz sequences for all numbers from 1 to 9,999 varies greatly.

Even if that sounds unlikely, it doesn’t have to be. In mathematics there are many examples where certain laws only break down after many iterations are considered. For instance, the prime number theorem overestimates the number of primes for only about 10 316 numbers. After that point, the prime number set underestimates the actual number of primes.

Something similar could occur with the Collatz conjecture: perhaps there is a huge number hidden deep in the number line that breaks the pattern observed so far.

A Proof for Almost All Numbers

Mathematicians have been searching for a conclusive proof for decades. The greatest progress was made in 2019 by Fields Medalist Terence Tao of the University of California, Los Angeles, when he proved that almost all starting values of natural numbers eventually end up at a value close to 1.

“Almost all” has a precise mathematical meaning: if you randomly select a natural number as a starting value, it has a 100 percent probability of ending up at 1. ( A zero-probability event, however, is not necessarily an impossible one .) That’s “about as close as one can get to the Collatz conjecture without actually solving it,” Tao said in a talk he gave in 2020 . Unfortunately, Tao’s method cannot generalize to all figures because it is based on statistical considerations.

All other approaches have led to a dead end as well. Perhaps that means the Collatz conjecture is wrong. “Maybe we should be spending more energy looking for counterexamples than we’re currently spending,” said mathematician Alex Kontorovich of Rutgers University in a video on the Veritasium YouTube channel .

Perhaps the Collatz conjecture will be determined true or false in the coming years. But there is another possibility: perhaps it truly is a problem that cannot be proven with available mathematical tools. In fact, in 1987 the late mathematician John Horton Conway investigated a generalization of the Collatz conjecture and found that iterative functions have properties that are unprovable. Perhaps this also applies to the Collatz conjecture. As simple as it may seem, it could be doomed to remain unsolved forever.
