Avoid purchasing excess packaging products:

As consumers, we can all make smarter choices, such as turning down plastic straws and cutlery or reconsidering heavily packaged products in the supermarket. With enough demand, retailers, and suppliers will quickly get the message and make changes for the better.

Choose glass or metal drink containers over plastic: 

Statistics suggest one million plastic bottles are bought every minute. Sure, they can be recycled, but most are not. In 2016, the United States recycled plastic bottles at 30 percent. That means two out of three bottles will end up in landfill.

Choose wool over synthetic garments: 

A major source of microplastic fibers is synthetic clothing (like solar fleece jackets and pullovers). While wastewater treatment plants can effectively remove microplastics (up to 98 percent), a 2016 study determined that the average wastewater treatment plant still releases 4 million particles per day (and as many as 65 million).

By picking up the litter you see in front of you, you are not only making an immediate impact, but you may also be sending a strong signal that will keep people from littering in the future-people to pick up less and use garbage bins more in places that are kept clean. Of course, individual actions alone cannot solve the plastic problem. Even if everyone does whatever we can to reduce our plastic footprint, the problem needs to be addressed at other levels.

India is the global host of 2023 World Environment Day and this year the theme is “Beat Plastic Pollution”. The theme reflects that we are in an era where it has become a necessary evil. It can be banned, but it is not necessary. Many governments in India have attempted to curb this menace, but have failed since they lack better alternatives.

Plastic has become part and parcel of our lives. Snatching plastic from the ever-growing plastic business industry is not a viable option, because it has so many socioeconomic concerns. However, it may be possible if we have better options available to consumers.

Although we have jute or paper bags in place, they have not changed the mindset of people or are not cost-effective. Currently, different researchers claim they have created different mechanisms to deal with plastic pollution. However, that has been restricted to labs only and there is a need to bring them into the field. This is to cater to the urgent needs that we have right now.

Leading environmentalists, thinkers, academicians, industrialists, journalists, and religious leaders will deliberate upon multiple environmental issues today to find an inclusive approach to ways to protect our planet Earth and the human race from plastic pollution, but if not in practice, it will be of no value for mother earth.

A slew of programs will be held across the globe to celebrate world environment day. These programs will include planting trees, cleaning specific areas, doing poster competitions, essay writing, and distributing prizes.

Those who celebrate will not remember the other day. In fact, every day is an environmental day. We have to remember it every day if we want to make this world a beautiful place to live in. Celebrations will not make this place a better place, but actions will.

India will host it and will definitely send a message to its citizens to contribute to the environment’s betterment. But will they think back to the Environmental Performance Ranking that dropped to 177 in 2023?

India is the fourth worst-ranked country in the world for handling environmental issues, according to the 2018 Environmental Performance Index (EPI), the green ranking released on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum meeting in Davos. Out of 180 countries, India ranked 177, better in environmental performance than the Democratic Republic of Congo, Bangladesh, and Burundi.

This is where they have to ponder and act. Will they make another plan to clean the water bodies as previous plans neither worked nor were completed? The mighty Ganga river’s tributaries, Himalayan-glacier fed springs, that provide drinking water for 400 million people, as it enters the Indian subcontinent’s highly populated cities, and pours out into the Bay of Bengal, the water goes from crystal clear to trash and sewage-infested sludge. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s steadfast $3 billion pledge in 2015 to clean up the waterway has not helped clean the mess from this river.

In addition to that the challenge of managing solid waste in India has become worrisome for the concerned departments. Over 377 million urban people live in 7,935 towns and cities and generate 62 million tonnes of municipal solid waste per annum. Only 43 million tonnes (MT) of waste are collected, 11.9 MT is treated and 31 MT is dumped in landfill sites.

Almost all municipal authorities deposit solid waste in dump yards within or outside the city haphazardly. Experts believe that India follows a flawed system of waste disposal and management. The trend is almost similar in the city of Srinagar.

The CSE study showed that the ITO intersection in Delhi saw noise levels as high as 106 decibels (dB) due to vehicular honking which is sufficient to develop Noise Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL) and may promote heart conditions, sleep disorders, and cognitive impairment in children. We have many problems and concerns, and there are solutions, but they need to be applied with sincerity and honesty.

પ્રદૂષણના ઘણા પ્રકારો છે, જેમાં નીચેનાનો સમાવેશ થાય છે:

હવાનું પ્રદૂષણ ( Air  Pollution ) :

વાયુ પ્રદૂષણ એ આપણે જે હવામાં શ્વાસ લઈએ છીએ તેમાં હાનિકારક પદાર્થોની હાજરી છે, જે માનવ સ્વાસ્થ્ય અને પર્યાવરણ પર નકારાત્મક અસર કરી શકે છે. વાયુ પ્રદૂષણ કુદરતી અને માનવ બંને સ્ત્રોતોમાંથી આવી શકે છે, પરંતુ માનવ પ્રવૃત્તિઓ વાયુ પ્રદૂષણનું પ્રાથમિક કારણ છે.

> વાયુ પ્રદૂષણના કેટલાક સામાન્ય સ્ત્રોતોમાં નીચેનાનો      સમાવેશ થાય છે :

વાહનવ્યવહાર : કાર, ટ્રક અને અન્ય વાહનો હવામાં નાઇટ્રોજન ઓક્સાઇડ, રજકણ અને અસ્થિર કાર્બનિક સંયોજનો સહિત પ્રદૂષકોને બહાર કાઢે છે.

ઔદ્યોગિક પ્રવૃત્તિઓ : ઉત્પાદન, વીજ ઉત્પાદન અને અન્ય ઔદ્યોગિક પ્રવૃત્તિઓ હવામાં પ્રદૂષકોને મુક્ત કરી શકે છે, જેમ કે સલ્ફર ડાયોક્સાઇડ, નાઇટ્રોજન ઓક્સાઇડ અને રજકણ.

કૃષિ પ્રવૃત્તિઓ : કૃષિમાં ખાતરો અને જંતુનાશકોનો ઉપયોગ એમોનિયા અને અસ્થિર કાર્બનિક સંયોજનો સહિત પ્રદૂષકોને હવામાં મુક્ત કરી શકે છે.

વેસ્ટ મેનેજમેન્ટ : લેન્ડફિલ્સ, ઇન્સિનેટર અને અન્ય કચરો વ્યવસ્થાપન સુવિધાઓ હવામાં મિથેન અને પાર્ટિક્યુલેટ મેટર સહિત પ્રદૂષકોનું ઉત્સર્જન કરી શકે છે.

કુદરતી સ્ત્રોતો : કુદરતી ઘટનાઓ જેમ કે જંગલની આગ, જ્વાળામુખી ફાટી નીકળવો અને ધૂળના તોફાનો પણ વાયુ પ્રદૂષણમાં ફાળો આપી શકે છે.

માનવ સ્વાસ્થ્ય પર વાયુ પ્રદૂષણની નકારાત્મક અસરોમાં શ્વસન સમસ્યાઓ, રક્તવાહિની રોગ, કેન્સર અને પ્રજનન સમસ્યાઓનો સમાવેશ થાય છે. વાયુ પ્રદૂષણ પર્યાવરણ પર નકારાત્મક અસરો પણ કરી શકે છે, જેમ કે એસિડ વરસાદ, આબોહવા પરિવર્તન અને ઇકોસિસ્ટમ્સ અને જૈવવિવિધતાને નુકસાન.

જળ પ્રદૂષણ (Water Pollution ):

જળ પ્રદૂષણ એ મહાસાગરો, નદીઓ, સરોવરો અને ભૂગર્ભજળ સહિત પાણીના શરીરમાં હાનિકારક પદાર્થોની હાજરીનો ઉલ્લેખ કરે છે. જળ પ્રદૂષણથી જળચર જીવન, માનવ સ્વાસ્થ્ય અને પર્યાવરણ પર ગંભીર નકારાત્મક અસરો થઈ શકે છે.

જળ પ્રદૂષણના સ્ત્રોતોમાં કુદરતી અને માનવ પ્રવૃત્તિઓ બંનેનો સમાવેશ થાય છે.

મ્યુનિસિપલ ગંદુ પાણી : સુએજ ટ્રીટમેન્ટ પ્લાન્ટ અને સેપ્ટિક સિસ્ટમ પ્રદૂષકોને પાણીમાં છોડી દે છે.

તેલ અને રાસાયણિક સ્પીલ : ઓઇલ સ્પીલ અથવા રાસાયણિક સ્પીલ જેવા અકસ્માતો હાનિકારક પદાર્થોને પાણીના શરીરમાં છોડી દે છે, જે જળચર જીવન અને પર્યાવરણને ગંભીર નુકસાન પહોંચાડે છે.
