Writing a biography can be an exciting experience. It can also be difficult because some details do not seem to be important but act as a crucial part of the story. This is why it pays to know how to write an interesting biography and what questions you should ask to generate enough information for your writing project.

The length of a biography depends on the number of details you want to capture in it. A short biography is perhaps half a page in length, and it has only the basic facts about a person’s life, whereas a long biography could be at least ten pages long and contain several sections.

Biography templates are pre-designed documents that provide a structured framework for creating a biography or personal profile. These templates assist in organizing and presenting information about an individual’s life, accomplishments, and significant events in a concise and coherent manner.

Biography templates typically include sections that cover various aspects of a person’s life, such as early life and background, education, career achievements, notable experiences, personal interests, and any other relevant information. They may also incorporate sections for photographs, quotes , or testimonials to enhance the biography’s visual appeal and credibility.

Using a biography template can streamline the process of creating a well-structured and engaging biography. It serves as a guide for gathering information and organizing it in a logical sequence, ensuring that important details are included and presented effectively.

What is a biography?

Biography Template

Biography :  Briefly, the life stories, works, and achievements of people who have a reputation in certain fields (such as art, literature, and politics) and are known by the public and loved by many people are conveyed to the reader as a result of certain research, and while doing this, it is simply that everyone can understand. These are the articles written in a language and appear as the product of certain research in an objective way.

Features of a Biography

  • The main purpose of writing a biography; is to present all aspects of the person mentioned to the reader as much as possible.
  • The life, personality, and works of the person whose written biography are told objectively.
  • The place where the person whose biography was written was born, where he lived, what kind of childhood he went to, which school he went to, what department he studied, his professional life, personality traits, achievements, and the works he wrote are mentioned.
  • Documents and biographies, which are the product of extensive research, are among the most important sources by historians who do research in the field of art and profession.
  • One of the features of biographies is that they have documentary quality. In this way, they are sources that share important information, experience, and examples with future generations.

What is the purpose of a biography?

The purpose of the biography is to share another person’s life with the audience. A writer may choose to write a biography because the subject finds the story interesting or because it has themes that apply to life today. Some writers choose to write a biography or update the public with facts that an existing biography may have overlooked because of a lack of information on an interesting topic. Biographical stories can be inspirational—highlighting a particular figure’s achievements, pointing out ways the subject overcame difficulties—giving readers a sense of courage. Biographies can also serve as cautionary tales, warning readers of who not to be.

How to Write a Biography

To write the story of a person’s life, you need to know more than the basic facts. A good biography explores the really interesting things about a person’s life—notable achievements, moments of adversity, and important turning points. The best biography can encompass a subject’s entire life engagingly and provide enough personal detail to make the reader take a closer look at their characters. If you’re interested in writing a biography, the following steps can help you get started:

Get permission:  After choosing the subject of the biography, ask permission to write about their life. While not necessary in some cases (such as when a subject is a prominent person or deceased), getting permission will make the research part of your writing process much easier. If the subject is willing to be biographical, they can provide important up-front details about their story that will help make your writing about them more compelling.

Do your research:  No matter how much you know about your subject, extensive research is necessary to paint a complete picture of this person. If they are historical figures, include information about the period in which they lived and how they affected their lives. Primary sources are first-hand accounts of your subject’s life and tend to be the most reliable. These may include diary entries, emails, interviews, or memoirs. The primary source may also be the subject’s other information, such as a personal website, Twitter bio, social media account, or professional biography. Secondary sources, such as magazines or documentaries, can also be used if the information can be verified.

Create your thesis:  Your first paragraph or section should let the reader know what they will learn about this person from this bio. A thesis makes a statement about the owner of the biography, which the rest of the biography will provide relevant information to support.

Make a timeline :  A biography usually structures the main points of a person’s life in chronological order. Knowing the order of major events before you start writing can save you from having to rearrange your entire story later on.

Use flashbacks: When writing the text of your bio, you may want to alternate between an experience from your subject’s adult life and an experience from your high school days. Using flashbacks allows the author to present relevant background information without overwhelming the reader with background explanation paragraphs.

Include your thoughts: A biography is not just an exchange of facts. A biographer can share his own feelings and thoughts about his subject’s life. If the subject has done something remarkable, the author may include why they think the moment is important, how it was affected by the period, and what it means for society as a whole. This will support why this person deserves to be written about and will keep the viewer reading from the first sentence to the last.

Parts of a Biography: Key Elements to Include

Introduction.

  • Various information is given about the person’s place of birth and birth.

  • The reader is informed about the social status of the person.
  • If the memory is wanted to be told, it is explained in this section.

How to write a creative, useful personal bio + fill-in-the-blank samples

July 20, 2021

How to write a creative, useful personal bio + fill-in-the-blank samples 1

My About page was just as outdated as everyone else’s. When I wrote the original draft of that page about eight or nine years ago I wanted something that didn’t sound like it was written by the T-1000. I’ve recently revised it to have two parts: an informal bio and a professional one at the bottom.

Most bios sound something like this in the first person:

After earning my Bachelor’s in Media Arts from Indiana University, I started my career with the Indiana Supreme Court. There, I was able to explore my passion for the web and design. In addition, I’ve been recognized by colleagues and later clients for my relentless commitment to better websites.

Gross. That ticks off a lot of boxes, but it’s just so inhumane.

A third person point of view struggles to sound slightly better:

Justin is an experienced copywriter and website strategist. Driven by a desire to make websites better, he takes pride in providing the best research and narrative nonfiction copywriting work for site SEO and growth. An avid cyclist, Justin has cycled over 75,000 miles in his life and is on a mission to become one of the world’s leading narrative nonfiction writers for brands, websites, and other research projects.

Gross, but at least it’s less showy.

There’s the Instagram or Twitter bio route where people write with emojis to explain various loves, interests, and hobbies. I actually do the same :

💪 Helping you sound and look better 🥇 Writer at justinharter.com 👇 See what I’m up to linkin.bio/justinlharter

But those are short and don’t have a ton of room, and are not at all useful for work or professional contexts.

My friend and mentor Scott Flood wrote this variation for me at my request many years ago:

An entrepreneur, writer, educator, and social organizer, Justin started a successful web development business before he was old enough to drive. By 21, he was managing the Indiana Supreme Court’s complex website. Today, he helps clients optimize their online presence, teaches web design to students of Vincennes University at Ben Davis University, and has channeled central Indiana’s youthful tech community’s resources into community service, first through the successful RefreshIndy social organization, and now through the annual re:build web conference.

As personal and professional bios go, having someone else you trust write some or all of it is a great way to go. What made Scott’s variation for me so useful was how it captures what was unusual and unique about me at the time—my age.

But I’m not 19 or 22 anymore. My professional goals have changed, I’ve accomplished many more things and it needs some updating.

If you can get over the mental hump of thinking about yourself as a product, think about the best reviews on the Internet and what those things have in common:

  • The best products provide clear benefits, not just features. E.g., “It toasts Pop-Tarts in 60 seconds” is a feature. “Sit down with the kids for breakfast in under a minute” is a benefit.
  • There’s social proof from someone else in the form of a useful, believable testimonial or kudos.
  • As writing goes, starting with a “you” focus instead of “I” or some first-person possessive is ideal. “I write the best code for businesses” sounds better as, “Get the best code for your business by hiring me.”
  • The best writing isn’t who, what, when, where, and how or why. It’s character, scene, plot, and theme. Those are all hard things to include in a few sentences, but I wanted to try…

An example of a new bio for 2021

Justin Harter is awake and moving by 5:30 seven days a week. By 7 AM he’s writing some of the most compelling stories and advertising for places like Indiana University, game studios, and engineering firms. An entrepreneur, writer, educator, and athlete, Justin originally started a successful web development business before he was old enough to drive. By 21, he was managing the Indiana Supreme Court’s complex website. By 33 he had grown and sold his web design agency. He has helped shape young minds at Vincennes and Indiana Universities and has channeled Indiana’s tech community, first through the successful RefreshIndy social organization, and later through the three-time re:build web conference. Past colleagues have described Justin as, “An excellent teacher and writer”, “A creative dynamo that helps our business be better”, and possess what his husband calls, “A force somersaulting him out of bed at very early hours” and “a weird knack for learning about obscure things.” Today from his home in Indianapolis, Justin helps people like you optimize websites with brand journalism, search optimization and increased traffic, and copywriting. He’s on a mission to become one of the world’s leading narrative nonfiction writers by 2035 online and in print. Justin is also the author of two books, including “ What Does Your Website Do All Day? ” Work is underway on a third book. He finds time to write on his personal website at justinharter.com and has begun a regular email series .

The size of a biography depends on its use; it can be large enough for a book of hundreds of pages or can be just about a few sentences. The essence of a biography determines the length and the depth.

Knowing how to undertake research for a person’s Biography and the details to include can also be the function of the use of the Biography and the request of the subject. Also, this can get down to the expertise and the resources at the disposal of the writer(s).

Who Deserves a Biography?

Every celebrity or national, political, religious, and regional figure can have biographies written about them. A Biography can use all facts and evidence the writer can get about the subject, including oral and written testimonies as well as pictures and historical records.

Checklist of a Good Biography:

Whatever the case, a good biography must contain the following details about the subject.

At first, it should have the title of the book with a line making a precision of the essence of the Biography. For example, it can be written as “Mandela: A Long Walk to Freedom.” This will be more likely to put a light on Mandela’s many struggles and contributions to the freedom of his people and his troubles along the way.

Secondly, a biography should also have the writer’s introduction at the beginning of the work, giving his personal views and making a careful analysis of the book. It can describe his age, his career, his relationship with the subject, and his motivations for writing the Biography. There should be a preface by the subject or any person in a position to speak for him/her, authenticating the validity of the work on the subject. Also, a biography should have the illustrator’s background information. This includes the date of birth, the place of birth, childhood experiences, and facility background.

Steps for writing a biography:

  • Firstly, select a famous personality.
  • Find out the real facts of that person’s life.
  • Search for the details of the person’s life that you want to add to the biography. Choose a specific area of that person’s life where you want the biography to revolve around.
  • Write the most interesting bit of the person’s life.
  • Write about the worth of the person in society.
  • List the qualities of the person to describe the personality.
  • Tell the readers about the events that get the best out of that person.

Biography Format Guidelines:

The word biography means to write about the life of another person in a sequence. A biography of a person can be short or long enough to fill a whole book. The length of a biography depends upon the writer. A small biography includes the general life facts of a person. In a long biography, you can add the deep details of a person’s life. You can make it more interesting for the readers. For writing a biography, it is necessary to read some biographies so that you can have the know-how to come up with an interesting biography. When you are writing about a famous personality, you will find many interesting things, but it will be your responsibility to carefully capture the information that you will add to the biography.

Furthermore, a biography should contain the growing experiences of the subject. This will include his/her education, training, and academic achievements. Also, a biography should give the details of the career of the subject. This will outline his or her professional experiences, places he/she has worked, the recognition he/she has at work, and outstanding achievements. The writer will also include his/her civil achievements. If he/she has received any national or community awards, these should come in. There is also a need to include traditional and religious recognition he/she has received over time.

The contributions to the community and national discourse, political activities of the state, and community development should also be documented in a biography. If the illustrator is still alive, you need to discuss what he/she had done at the point of writing the book. The writer should not make the mistake of making his personal views and opinions stand like the truth/fact in the work. It is so because personal views are designated as such.

The Only (FREE) Autobiography Template You Need – 4 Simple Steps

POSTED ON Nov 22, 2023

Shannon Clark

Written by Shannon Clark

Are you looking for an autobiography template?

First things first.

What is your story? Not the shiny, air-brushed one you edit before posting on Instagram or the one you politely share during a writer’s chat on Zoom.

By your story, I mean the one with the cracks in it caused by childhood insecurities or the deep craters forged by unexpected collisions with life—the triumphs and tragedies that are forever etched into your DNA.

Yes, that story.

When you’re truly ready to write an autobiography, you’ll know it because you’ve come to a point in your life where the beauty of sharing your story has nothing to do with perfection. It’s knowing that despite the roller coaster ride that started at birth, you’ve found the courage to stay on it—sometimes holding on for dear life and other times riding with your hands up and screaming at the top of your lungs.

Get your autobiography template here:

Need A Nonfiction Book Outline?

You’ve lived thoroughly and learned to embrace who you’ve become in the process, scars and all.

This post will show you the format for writing an autobiography and the best way to package your story so you can provide the best reader experience possible.

This blog gives you a free autobiography template and more…

What is an autobiography.

The basic definition of an autobiography is that it’s a first-person account of your life. It differs from a memoir , which usually focuses on a single event or group of events that lead you to a discovery about yourself, your life, or some other revelation. An autobiography is a look at the total sum of your life from birth (early childhood) to the time of your book’s writing that highlights the key points that shaped who you’ve become.

Ready to start writing your autobiography? Let's get into it…

What is the format for an autobiography?

Just like any good story, every autobiography has a beginning, middle, and end. But before you begin filling in the sections, you want to come up with a theme for your book . Most people have too much life content to fit into one book. Selecting the parts that fit under the umbrella of a theme will make the book easier to follow.

When coming up with a theme, think about what you want the key takeaway to be for the reader. You don’t want to give them some boring slog through your life history. If you want them to feel something, your book needs direction. That’s where your theme takes the lead. By keeping it in the back of your mind while writing, you’ll give your readers a track to stay on. Otherwise, they may lose interest and stop reading.

Once you have your theme, right down the events in your life that are related to your book’s focus. You’ll plug these into the outline as you develop it.

Some examples of autobiography book themes are:

  • Overcoming challenges
  • Creating your own destiny
  • The unbreakable bonds of family
  • A faith journey
  • Perseverance

Your theme can be whatever you want it to be, but keep your audience in mind when selecting one. Below you’ll find an autobiography template. It includes an outline with writing prompts in each section.

Whether you are an “outliner” (someone who outlines) or a “pantser” (someone who writes by the seat of their pants), the outline has enough structure and flexibility to make both writer types happy.

Autobiography Template: An Outline

I've laid out what a traditional autobiography might look like below. But to really help you get the most out of the blog post, I recommend downloading our nonfiction book outline to use alongside this guide.

1.  Introduction

Before you share your life story, prepare your readers for what is to follow by introducing yourself and telling them what they can expect. You can cover some or all of the following:

  • Why you are writing your autobiography?
  • What do you hope the reader will take away from the experience?
  • Any pertinent information that’s not covered in your book but that is needed for context.

2. The beginning – the early years

Since autobiographies are a condensed view of your life, you want to focus on the significant events that will move your story forward.

  • Where do you want to begin your story?
  • Where does your book’s theme first show up when you look back over your life? You want the opening of your book to have an impact, so choose something that will hook your readers and bring them into your world.
  • How did your formative years influence how you viewed yourself? What we experience during our childhood can affect us for a lifetime. Consider how the early events of your life developed your character.
  • Who influenced you the most during your childhood?
  • What defining moments do you remember?

Where (on your timeline) and how you start your story is up to you. You want it to be something strong and significant to have the most impact on your reader. Here are the first few sentences of some autobiographies for inspiration .

Autobiography Template - &Quot; Not That Fancy&Quot; By Reba Mcentire

“Some would say the McEntires are a very set-in-their-ways, stubborn, hardheaded bunch of people. But I think that hardheadedness is what got Daddy to where he was, Grandpap to where he was, and his father, Pap, to where he was. Some might say it wasn't all that far- but it was much further than where they started!”

– Not That Fancy: Simple Lessons on Living, Loving, Eating, and Dusting Off Your Boots by Reba McEntire

Autobiography Template - &Quot; This Time Together&Quot; By Carol Burnett

“My grandmother Nanny and I were at the picture show. I hadn't reached two digits yet in age because I distinctly remember my feet couldn't touch the floor of the movie house. Nanny and I were still living in San Antonio, Texas. My mama and daddy had gone ahead to California, where Nanny and I would later wind up.” – This Time Together: Laughter and Reflection by Carol Burnett

(From Birth)

Autobiography Template - &Quot;God, Family, Country&Quot; By Craig Morgan

“ If you know my music, you almost certainly know me as Craig Morgan. But I was actually born Craig Morgan Greer. Craig Morgan came along many years later.” – God, Family, Country: A Memoir by Craig Morgan

3. The middle- halfway between the early years and where you are today.

If you are using a timeline to divide your story, the period that you cover during the “middle” of your autobiography depends on how old you are at the writing of your book. If you are in your golden years, your midpoint might be in your 30s or 40s. For someone like Malala Yousafzai , who wrote her autobiography at age 15, her “middle” looked very different.

Whichever “middle” you choose consider the following:

  • What are the defining moments during this time of your life?
  • Did they change how you viewed yourself?
  • Did they change the trajectory of what you initially thought you’d do with your life?
  • Who had the most influence on your life during this time?
  • What are some of the challenges you faced? How did you overcome them?
  • Did your worldview change during this time? If so, in what ways?

If your “middle” doesn’t fit neatly into a timeline, consider grouping your autobiography into themed sections.

The autobiography Cash by Johnny Cash groups his story into sections based on places that had special meaning to him: Cinnamon Hill, The Road, Port Rickey, Bon Aqua, and The Road Again.

4. The end—wrap-up

The end of your autobiography is the climax. It’s what you’ve been leading your reader to since the first sentence of your book.

  • Where are you in your life now? What have you learned? How has your journey impacted who you’ve become?
  • How do you want the reader to feel when they read the last sentence of your book? Inspired? Hopeful? Full? Enlightened? Satisfied? All of the above?
  • Is there any part of your life that feels unfinished or incomplete?
  • Looking back over your life, what is the greatest lesson you learned?
  • Don’t forget your audience, especially at the beginning of your book. You want to hook your readers early and bring them along for the ride.
  • Write an eye-catching autobiography title for your book.
  • Leave out the minutia. If it doesn’t move your story along, drop it.
  • Tone matters. A good rule of thumb is to write your story like you were talking to a friend. Your story doesn’t have to be a monotone race to the finish line. Spice it up. Add some sparkle. Make sure your personality shines through.
  • It’s always about the story. Buyers pick up your book to be entertained. Regardless of how serious your story is, it should be presented in a way that makes the reader want to keep turning the page.
  • Every good story has a resolution. Good or bad, offer a resolution for each life conflict you introduce.
  • As you share the final pieces of your story, use the end of your story to reflect on where you’ve been, what you’ve learned, and where you plan to go from there. Every relationship that ends can benefit from closure, and if the end of your story is not the end of your relationship with your reader, tell them where they can go to continue getting to know you.

Writing your autobiography is a courageous move, but who better to write your life story than you? If you have experiences that others will find interesting, share! You never know how your journey will impact someone else.

What is a Biography?

It is a written account of a person's life, capturing their experiences, achievements, and significant events. It provides an in-depth exploration of an individual's journey, offering insight into their personal and professional aspects. Biographies are typically organized in chronological order, following the sequence of events as they occurred throughout the person's life. This arrangement allows readers to understand the person's growth and development over time, as well as the impact they made in their respective fields. Biographies often include interesting facts about the person, shedding light on their unique qualities, accomplishments, or challenges they faced. These facts provide a deeper understanding of the individual's life and contribute to the overall narrative. Whether it's an extraordinary achievement, a personal struggle, or a notable contribution to society, these interesting facts add depth and intrigue to the writing.

Types of Biography

There are several different types of biographies that provide unique perspectives on individuals' lives. These types include:

  • Autobiography: An autobiography is written about the author by the author. It offers a firsthand account of their own life, sharing personal experiences, reflections, and insights. Autobiographies provide an intimate look into the person's thoughts, emotions, and motivations.
  • Memoir: Similar to an autobiography, a memoir focuses on specific periods or events in a person's life rather than their entire life story. Memoirs often center around a theme or specific aspect of the person's life, such as their career, relationships, or personal struggles.
  • Collective: This a compilation of biographies of multiple individuals, often with a common theme or shared experience. It allows readers to gain insights into the lives of several people and compare their experiences and contributions.
  • Biographical Fiction: Biographical fiction combines real-life events and characters with fictional elements. It blends factual information with storytelling techniques to write a compelling narrative based on a real person's life.
  • Critical: Critical biographies delve into a person's life from a critical perspective, analyzing their achievements, impact, and cultural significance. They often provide a scholarly examination of the person's contributions and their place in history.
  • Popular: Popular biographies are written for a wider audience and focus on individuals who have achieved fame or notoriety. They often emphasize the person's public persona, achievements, and impact on society.

Each type offers a distinct perspective and serves different purposes. Whether it's gaining a personal account through an autobiography or exploring the cultural significance of a person through a critical biography, biographies provide valuable insights into the lives of individuals and their contributions to society.

Enhance Biography Writing with a Biography Graphic Organizer

A graphic organizer is a valuable tool that can greatly enhance the process of writing biographies. It provides a structured format for organizing information and helps students gather and present key details about a person's life in a clear and logical manner. These graphic organizers, such as this creative graphic organizer example , serve as a roadmap for writers, guiding them through the writing process and ensuring that they include all the essential elements.

Using a graphic organizer helps students understand the format and enables them to write more effectively. It provides a visual representation of the various sections and components of a biography, such as the introduction, background information, major events, achievements, and conclusion. This organization helps maintain a coherent and chronological order while presenting the subject's life story.

Our website offers free printable biography worksheets, including biography activity worksheet, that can be easily accessed and downloaded for any project. They provide students with a ready-to-use template to record and organize information about their chosen subject. They can be used for short biographies or more extensive projects.

A biography sheet acts as a framework that prompts students to identify important details, make connections between events, and form a comprehensive understanding of the individual's impact on the world.

Writing biographies can be a challenging task, but with the help of a graphic organizer, students can break down the process into manageable sections. They can focus on gathering relevant information, organizing their thoughts, and presenting their findings in a clear and concise manner.
