How to Write a Good Third Person Biographical Statement

When you read submission guidelines, which vary from literary journal to literary journal, almost all of them will require that you include a brief biographical statement (or bio). Usually they require that the bio is in the third person and to be 50 words or less.

These bios are tricky to write.It is hard to describe ones life using 50 words or less. And frankly, you are better off not doing it. The editor of the journal does not care if you have been twice divorced, and neither does the reading public.

I am all for including one or two personal details, but I prefer that they relate indirectly to your writing. For example when I was submitting a lot of geographically themed poems I included the line “Emily Harstone just moved for the 18th time”.

Another fact worth considering including is what you actually do for a living. Most writers don’t write for a living. They do something else to pay the bills. Mentioning what that is can easily add complexity to your bio. Although it might affect the way your submission is considered. For example mentioning that you are a lawyer in your bio would have a different effect than mentioning that you are a stripper.

Most writers focus the bulk of their (very short) bio on writing. This is often a good thing. Although that can be tricky too. The biggest pitfalls is just mentioning the same things as every other writer. For example I once scanned through a literary journal and every single contributor’s bio included the fact that they had an MFA (a Masters of Fine Arts degree).  The schools they attended varied, but that single fact repeated over and over again got to me. Right after reading all of those bios, I removed the fact that I have an MFA from my bio.

The other issue is mentioning too many literary journals that you have been published in. When you are first starting out this seems like a good problem to have. And once your work has been published, you should include some of the most recent or prestigious journals in your biographical statement.

However, you should not include all of them, that would just be overwhelming and also boring. As a general rule of thumb I never include the names of more than 5 literary journals. Usually I limit it to three.

Some authors don’t bother mentioning the names of all the literary journals they have been published in. Their bios instead they say something like this “Their work has been published in over a hundred literary journals.”  If you are just starting out, that sounds impressive, but quality is much more important than quantity when it comes to literary journals. It would be much better to name the three best literary journals you have been published in than to refer to all one hundred (or more).

Below are two examples of biographical statements of less than 50 words, one contains journal names, one does not.

Sample Bio 1:

Maria Smith resides in the rural Pacific Northwest. Her work has appeared or is forthcoming in numerous places, including: Tin House , The Liner, and Echolocation , and the anthology Tidelines. Her second chapbook Pancakes for Dinner is forthcoming in 2014 from Hawthorne Press.

Sample Bio 2:

Joshua Thomas is a poet, editor, and recovering New Yorker who now lives in Idaho. Joshua once wrote a sonnet every hour for twenty-four hours straight. He loves to hike, cook, and read.

My personal ideal for a good bio is to mention one interesting personal fact. And then focus the rest of the bio on the area where writing and life intersect. I always include a link to my website as part of my bio. That way readers who like my writing can learn more about me (and possibly purchase a book or two).

Once I write a bio I am happy with, I use it for about a year. I submit the same bio with most of my submissions.  After a year has passed, I write a new one.

Remember, it is important to keep in mind who is seeing the bio. First the editor sees it (if they do blind submissions the editor might not see your bio till right before the issue published), and then the readers of the literary journals.

You want your bio to be short, professional, and to appeal to both the editors and the readers. I know that might seem like a tough task, but it gets a lot easier with time and practice.

To be fair, in certain contexts, your professional bio needs to be more formal, like Mr. Erickson's up there. But there are also cases where writing a personable and conversational bio is good.

Whether you choose the formal or casual route, use the following steps to create a perfect bio.

1. Create an 'About' page for your website or profile.

You need an online space to keep your professional bio. Here are a few to consider (some of these you might already have in place):

  • Industry blog byline .

Instagram, for example, allows only 150 characters of bio space, whereas you can write as much as you want on your website or Facebook Business page.

2. Begin writing your bio with your first and last name.

  • Content by Kolowich (what do you think ... too cheesy?).

Maybe you founded your own company and want its name to be separate from your real name. Keep it simple like this: "Lindsay Kolowich is the founder and CEO of Kolowich Consulting."

4. State your current position and what you do.

Whether you're the author of a novel or a mid-level specialist, use the following few lines of your bio to describe what you do in that position. Refrain from assuming your audience knows what your job title entails.

Writing a professional bio can help you in a variety of ways as you grow your career. Like writing a resume , it can feel overwhelming, but if you follow a simple formula, you can create one with ease.

What is a professional bio?

A professional bio tells people who you are and what you do, and there are three common lengths: long, short, and very short (micro). A long bio can be up to one page, and it most likely lives on your website. A short bio is a paragraph and can be used multiple places, including as a summary on your resume and on career-focused social media, such as LinkedIn. A very short (micro) bio is one to two sentences you can use to introduce yourself on a call, when giving a presentation, or on social media sites such as Twitter.

Why should you write one?

You can assume any time you apply for a new position or connect with someone in a professional capacity, they are looking you up online. Having a bio helps establish your brand and credibility, and it takes the facts that are in your resume and gives them plot and story.

To put yourself in the best position for later, start with writing a long version of your bio.

How do you write a professional bio?

Before you start, decide whether you’ll be writing in first or third person, and remain consistent throughout. It’s more common to have your professional bio written in third person, but if you plan to use your bio in a more informal way, it’s fine to write in first person.

One thing to keep in mind—it can feel a bit more natural to write about accomplishments in the third person because you can mentally separate yourself from feeling like you’re bragging about how amazing you are. If you plan to make two versions, it could be easier to start with writing in the third person.

At a high level, this is what you should make sure to include:

  • Responsibilities
  • Major, quantitative accomplishments
  • What makes you tick
  • Something personal (but not too personal)

Your name, title, and the company you work for

Your full name should be the first thing in your bio, and it can be followed by either your title or the company name, whichever flows most naturally to you.

How should you write about your responsibilities?

If you’re like most people, your job description has changed over the years—think about what your main responsibilities are day-to-day, but focus on how describing those responsibilities can show the reader the skills and expertise you bring to the table. Do you manage a successful team? Do you excel at connecting with clients? Are you often asked to QA new technology? Write about the responsibilities that help the reader see who you are.

How should you write about your major, quantitative accomplishments?

Talking about your responsibilities should lead easily into pointing out a few of your most impressive accomplishments. And if possible, make them quantitative. Have you increased engagement by 35 percent? Have you created new training materials that have helped decrease the time it takes to onboard new employees? Have you maintained consistent profit margins? Did you build a new division within your company? Write in a way that allows you to use numbers and/or show the reader very clearly what you’re most proud to have achieved.

How should you write about what makes you tick?

What are your values? What would your personal mission statement be? What drives you in your professional life? Is it the connections you make with people? Is it seeing the big picture or is it your focus on the small details? Is it developing more efficient methods for your team? Is it problem solving? Ideally, some of those major accomplishments you just wrote about will tie into this—did you develop those new training materials because you love problem solving? Is your team successful because you are naturally drawn to mentoring?

How do you write about something that’s personal, but not too personal?

You can choose to be done at this point, or you can include something a little more personal—it doesn’t need to be too personal, but it should show some personality. Here’s where you can talk about a fun hobby, something interesting and unexpected about your family, or a cool tidbit about your background to show the reader who you are outside of work.

Once you have your master bio written, you can tailor as the situation demands and use it in many places—shorten it for the various social platforms you want to put it on, use a compressed version for your resume summary, remove unnecessary portions for specific situations, and post it in its entirety on your website. And just like your resume—keep it current!

You may have heard someone talking about third person POV in an English class or on a writers’ panel. What does it mean? POV stands for point of view, and any piece of prose writing has one. The point of view helps anchor the reader, and it makes the text easier to understand. Even in a story that doesn’t appear to come from a particular character’s voice, we can still assign the narration a point of view. When the point of view isn’t yours (second person) or mine (first person), then we call it third person narration. In this article, we’ll give you some tips to help you learn to write this way.

Avoid First Person

First person emphasizes the subjective point of view, and you can easily identify this writing style through the use of the pronouns “I” and “me”. Imagine an autobiography. The narrator explains his or her life by using phrases like this one: “I was born in a small town.” In a biography, written by another person, the text might read: “She was born in a small town.” That’s the difference between first person and third person. In first person, the narrator is the main character or, if not the main character, a character in the action. On the other hand, when a book is written in the third person, the story does not come from the point of view of a character. Instead, the writing describes things that happen to other people, characters besides the writer or the reader. 

First person writing can be identified by the use of the following pronouns:

Avoid Second Person

Second person narration comes from the point of view of the reader. A second person point of view can often be found in the self-help or how-to genres, as well as in choice-based adventure books. “Choose Your Own Adventure® gamebooks began life in 1979 as the first publishing effort of a new division at Bantam Books focused on younger readers,” according to Chooseco LLC . Today, 265 million books have been published in this style. Let’s look at the summary of one of these books for a memorable example of second person narration:

“ You are a mountain climber, headed to the Himalayas to find proof that the mysterious yeti really exists. When your best friend Carlos goes missing from base camp, the fate of the expedition is in your hands.” — The Abominable Snowman

What Is Third Person?

When a piece of writing does not assume the perspective of either the reader or the writer, it’s written in the third person point of view. Third person narratives have three distinct styles, known as third person objective, third person omniscient, and third person limited omniscient. You can recognize all three of these points of view through the use of third person pronouns, which include:

Third Person Objective

Imagine a history essay or a science article, written by a distant and neutral third party. The writer does not attempt to explain the perspective of any character; instead, he or she reports on the events with dispassion. If any opinions made their way into the text, they are properly attributed to the source. 

Congressman Smith said, “X, Y, Z.” His constituent disagreed, arguing A. 

The author of a third person objective article would never presume to speak for another person’s inner thoughts. Instead, the writer aims to present the facts and events in an orderly way, attributing the actions and dialogue to the proper characters. 

This writing style is frequently used in academic writing and professional writing, but it can be used by fiction writers as well. As long as the author does not place thoughts inside the heads of characters, third person objective can work for any style of prose writing. If a writer wanted the reader to understand a character’s emotional state, he or she would have to make reference to body language, facial expression, and dialogue; otherwise, the character’s thoughts would remain opaque. The internal monologue of any character remains off limits from the objective point of view. 

Third Person Omniscient

The third person omniscient point of view frequently appears in fiction writing. With this style, an all-knowing narrator has the ability to get inside any character’s head. That’s why an omniscient point of view can be thought of as “head-hopping.” The narrator has knowledge of everything. The characters have nowhere to hide—even their most intimate thoughts may be plumbed. Personal opinions and internal dialogue are all fair game, for any of the characters. In this style of writing, you can expect to see different points of view. As a reader, you can expect to know more about the different characters than the characters know about each other. 

Third Person Limited Omniscient

Sometimes a writer engages a third person perspective, but they elevate one character above the rest. The writer may expound on that character’s thoughts, inner dialogue, and perspective. The focal character for the third person limited point of view is often called the viewpoint character. Typically, the viewpoint character is a main character in the story. The writer provides the reader with comprehensive access to this character’s thoughts, but all the other characters must be understood through actions, gestures, and dialogue. The reader must get by with limited information, since they rely on what the viewpoint character knows. 

Still, the reader does not go “inside the head” of the viewpoint character completely. Rather than writing from the main character’s perspective in the first person point of view, the writer maintains a third person writing style. Without using first person pronouns, the author explores the thoughts of a single character. The narrator describes she and her, not I and me. 

She worried that she would be late, but didn’t bother to tell her sister. 

In the example above, the reader understands what the viewpoint character is thinking. On the other hand, the sister cannot read the viewpoint character’s thoughts. Likewise, the reader is not privy to the sister’s thoughts. 

The omniscient limited and omniscient POV appear most commonly in creative writing. In general terms, third person objective or first person would be a more common choice for essays, articles, and nonfiction books. 

Blending Perspectives

Now that you know the conventions for writing in first person, second person, third person objective, third person limited, and third person limited omniscient, you may want to revisit some of your favorite works of literature. Try to figure out their points of view, and think about why the author picked that perspective. 

In your research, you may come across some books that defy categorization. Moby Dick by Herman Melville and Ulysses by James Joyce come to mind. Both books shift between third person and first person narration. Many fiction writers, especially modernist writers, flout convention by using a number of different narrative styles within the same work. 

In creative writing, you should feel free to break the rules. Just be sure to understand the rules as you break them!

Your personal bio could be the deciding factor in whether someone hires you, follows you, or buys from you.

However, writing one isn’t the easiest task in the world. It’s especially true if you’re one of those people who gets stage fright just thinking about having to talk about yourself.

So, how do you muster the courage to write a personal bio that stands out from the crowd? How do you make it witty, engaging, and memorable?

In this article, I’ll share some tips for crafting a personal bio (with some personal bio examples) that capture the attention of even the most distracted reader.

Before we start, here’s a quick overview of key elements you should include in your personal bio:

What to include in a personal bio?

Here are some key elements that you should consider including in your professional bio:

  • Brief background information: Start your bio by introducing yourself and your current job title. This helps to establish your professional credentials right away. For example: “Hi, I’m Jane, a freelance writer and editor with over ten years of experience in the industry.”
  • Career highlights and achievements: Highlight some of your most notable achievements and accomplishments. This can help to establish your expertise and credibility in your field. Example: “I’ve worked with various high-profile clients, including XYZ Corporation and ABC Publications.”
  • Your unique skills and qualities: What sets you apart from others in your industry? Mention those unique skills and qualities in your bio.
  • Personal interests and hobbies: A few details about your life can help humanize your bio and make you more relatable to readers. Example: “In my free time, I enjoy hiking and exploring new places with my dog, Max.”
  • A call-to-action or contact information: For example: “To see more of Jane’s work, visit her website at www.janesmithdesign.com or follow her on Instagram @janesmithdesign.”

Now that we’ve covered the key elements to include in a personal bio, let’s focus on some tips for crafting an effective and engaging bio.

Before that, it’s important to clear one pervasive doubt.

Should you write your personal bio in the first person or third person?

When a company first requested my personal bio, I remember scurrying here and there on the internet, frantically searching for examples of how other writers crafted their bios.

Was it customary to write in the first person or in the lofty, third-person perch of professional grandeur?

And I came to a conclusion.

Writing in the first person can be useful when writing a bio for a personal website or social media profile, or when trying to build a personal connection with the reader.

The tone is also often more personal and informal, as if you are speaking directly to the reader.

Hemingway’s autobiographical work , “A Moveable Feast,” is also written in the first person.

On writing in Paris…

This approach in his personal biography allowed Hemingway to share his personal experiences and insights into the literary world of Paris in the 1920s. The book is a classic of literary non-fiction.

On the other hand, writing in the third person is suitable when writing for a professional website , resume , or when trying to establish authority or expertise. The tone is more formal and objective, as if someone else is describing your accomplishments and background.

For instance, Albert Einstein’s professional bio on the official Nobel Prize website is entirely in the third person.

This approach emphasizes Einstein’s achievements and contributions to the field of physics while maintaining a sense of objectivity and professionalism.

So, it’s simple. For personal bios, it’s first person. And for professional bios, it’s the third person POV!

Tips for writing a compelling personal bio

To create a bio that leaves a lasting impression, think of it like a mini-story highlighting your achievements, quirks, and passions.

Here are some tips to help you get started:

1. Know your purpose

Before you start writing your bio, you need to know why you’re writing it and what tone you want to convey.

Are you trying to showcase your expertise? Introduce yourself to potential clients or customers? Connect with fellow professionals in your field?

Whatever your purpose, you need to tailor your bio accordingly. Duh!

It should also show you have the skills and experience to do the job well. This is especially true if you seek work in a particular field.

For example, if you want to work as an accountant, architect, or teacher, you need to show that you are qualified for this type of work.

2. Address your audience

The best personal bios are written with a specific audience in mind. If you don’t know who that audience is, how can you write for them?

That’s why before writing anything at all, ask yourself who will be reading it.

Who do you want to reach out to with this information?

Are they looking for someone like you?

What do they need from someone like you?

Once you have an answer or two (or three), start writing.

Let’s say you’re writing a bio for a professional website or portfolio that targets potential employers or clients in the creative industry.

In that case, you might want to include background information such as:

  • Your education and qualifications in a relevant field
  • Your work experience and current position in a creative role
  • Your professional goals and interests related to creativity
  • Your hobbies and passions that showcase your creativity
  • Your awards and recognition for your creative work

Allie Decker’s professional bio is a shining example of how to address your audience from the get-go.

By stating, “I love to write and help organizations produce content that builds and converts communities and drives revenue,” she immediately captures the attention of businesses needing content marketing expertise.

She’s also using specific language relevant to her audience – “builds and converts communities” and “drives revenue.” By using these terms, she’s showing that she understands her audience’s needs and priorities and can deliver results that matter to them.

What makes this short professional bio even better is how Allie strikes a balance between giving a glimpse into her professional and personal life.

Melinda Gates ‘ bio is another excellent example of how to tailor your personal bio for your target audience.

Her bio focuses on her work as a philanthropist and co-chair of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, highlighting her passion for improving global health and empowering women and girls.

By focusing on these topics, she appeals to a broad audience of people who share her values and interests.

3. Keep it concise and focused

When it comes to your bio, Alexandre Bocquet , Founder and CEO of Betterly , has some great advice:

“In today’s digital world, people tend to skim rather than read, so it’s crucial to keep your descriptions short and to the point. If your “Personal bio” page looks more like a book, it will deter people from reading it.”

Alexandre adds, “keep your word count to roughly a thousand words, bullet point key attributes and accomplishments, and keep paragraphs to four sentences or fewer.”

And there are studies to support this.

A study found that recruiters typically spend an average of 6 seconds on a profile before deciding whether to pursue a candidate further – highlighting the importance of making a strong first impression with a concise and impactful personal bio.

Writing a lengthy, meandering introduction has its appeal. But if you’re looking to catch the eye of a recruiter or potential clients, or even snag a coveted byline, a snappy and concise personal bio will be more suitable.

Alex Birkett’s personal bio is a prime example of how to make a reader care with only a few sentences.

He succinctly mentions his professional expertise and accomplishments as a product growth and experimentation expert and co-founder of a content marketing agency. Additionally, he shares his personal interests and hobbies, such as skiing, giving the reader a glimpse into his personality.

The mention of his dog Biscuit provides a human touch that can make the reader smile. Overall, his bio is concise, engaging, and balances professional and personal information.

4. Highlight your unique qualities and accomplishments

When you’re writing your personal bio, you want to make sure that you highlight your unique qualities and achievements.

Think about what you have achieved in your professional or personal life. These could include awards, recognitions, publications, promotions, or other significant milestones.

To highlight your unique qualities, think about what sets you apart. What are your strengths, skills, and experiences that make you unique? Is it your uncanny ability to solve complex problems or your talent for playing the ukulele?

It’s a shame I didn’t pay more attention to my Bharatnatyam (a classical Indian dance form) classes when I was younger.

But if you’ve got a unique accomplishment, own it!

5. Show your personality and character

When writing a personal bio, using the same template as everyone else is tempting. But that’s a mistake: Your brand is unique, so your bio should be too.

You have a few precious seconds to make a good impression. You have to be memorable and stand out from the crowd.

One way to do this is by injecting your personality into your personal bio.

Just take it from Natalia Brzezinska , Marketing and Outreach Manager at UK Passport Photo , who cites the bio of Polish journalist Maciej Okraszewski as the best-crafted she’s ever seen.

Okraszewski briefly highlighted his educational background and shared some of his best articles before ending with a hilarious quip about his love for Italian movies, old hip hop, and potatoes with kefir.

According to Brzezinska , “this bio demonstrated Okraszewski’s easygoing nature and sense of humor, proving that showcasing your human face can be more impactful than simply listing achievements.”

Tom Hanks’ Twitter bio is a great example of a personal bio that showcases personality and humor. It’s short, concise, and gives readers a glimpse into his life and personality.

Hanks’ bio gives readers a sense of who he is as a person while also making them laugh and feel more connected to him. Such personal bios are especially perfect for social profiles, where you want to connect with your audience.

Your turn now to infuse your personal bio with your unique personality and character. Here are a few tips for doing that:

  • Use action verbs: Instead of saying, “I am an entrepreneur,” say, “I build businesses from scratch.” Instead of saying, “I am a writer,” say, “I write stories that make people laugh, cry and think.”
  • Be specific about what you do – and why you do it: Say you’re a marketing director at an online retailer because you love helping consumers find products they love, not because it pays well or gives you flexibility in your schedule.
  • Inject humor: Humor is a great way to get people’s attention and make them like you more. You can do this by using jokes or puns in your bio or even being funny.
  • Be yourself: This one should go without saying, but if you’re too formal, then it’s going to sound fake. If you want people to see another side of you, be natural and casual about it. People will appreciate an honest approach more than anything else.

6. Use keywords and industry-specific language

If the aim is to attract more clients or connect with other people in your industry, don’t forget to include keywords and industry-specific language in your bio.

For example, if you’re a software developer, you might include keywords like “Java,” “Python,” or “web development” in your bio. If you’re a freelance writer, you might mention specific industries or topics you specialize in, such as “B2B SaaS writer,” “healthcare writing,” or “content marketing for small businesses.”

The more specific you can be with your keywords, the better your chance of being found by your intended audience.

However, add these terms organically – don’t just cram a bunch of buzzwords into your bio unless they actually reflect your skills or experience. Instead, think about the key skills or areas of expertise you want to highlight and find ways to incorporate those naturally.

For instance, if you look for keywords like “SaaS freelance writer” or “content strategist,” you’ll come across Marijana Kay’s personal bio .

7. Keep it up-to-date

If you think you can stick with your old, dusty bio from half a decade ago and still manage to wow potential clients, think again.

Your target audience will probably think you peaked once and still piggybacking on that one accomplishment.

Instead, your bio should give a current picture of who you are and what you’ve been up to.

When should you change your bio? There are key moments in your life and career when it becomes imperative to refresh it.

Don’t forget to change your bio when you:

  • Change jobs or roles
  • Complete a new project or course
  • Receive an award or recognition
  • Learn a new skill or tool
  • Achieve a personal or professional goal

Make sure to double-check all the details in your bio, including your current job title, any recent projects or clients you’ve worked with, and any new skills or certifications.

Additionally, updating your bio can be a fun way to flex your creative muscles and inject a little personality into your online presence.

Finally, an up-to-date bio can make a big difference in how people perceive you and how likely they want to work with you.

Pro Tip: To keep your bio up-to-date, set a reminder for yourself to review it regularly. This might be once a month, once a quarter, or whenever you have a major change or accomplishment to add.

8. Name-drop previous clients or famous employers

A personal bio is a great place to name-drop previous clients or famous employers. The idea is to show you have experience working with other big names in your industry.

If you don’t have any big-name clients/employers, that’s OK! You can still use this technique to list small businesses and organizations relevant to your target market.

9. Include your personal story

Your bio is a great place to tell your story – especially if you’re writing for your personal website. It’s an opportunity to share your experiences and how you got where you are.

To get started, choose a central theme for your personal story that ties it all together. This could be a particular struggle you overcame, a key life lesson, or a defining experience that has shaped your worldview.

And while narrating your story, use vivid details and sensory language to bring it to life. This will help readers visualize the events and emotions you’re describing and make your story more engaging.

For example, instead of “I was nervous,” you could describe your sweaty palms and racing heartbeat.

That said, you don’t need to include every single detail of your life story. Focus only on the most impactful moments, and try to weave them together in a way that makes sense.

Marie Forleo , an author and entrepreneur, has nailed the art of spicing up her bio with her personal story.

Step 1 Shift your focus from character to character.

  • For instance, a story may include four major characters: William, Bob, Erika, and Samantha. At various points throughout the story, the thoughts and actions of each character should be portrayed. These thoughts can occur within the same chapter or block of narration.
  • Writers of omniscient narratives should be conscious of “head-hopping” — that is, shifting character perspectives within a scene. While this does not technically break the rules of Third Person Omniscience, it is widely considered a hallmark of narrative laziness.

  • In a sense, the writer of a third person omniscient story is somewhat like the “god” of that story. The writer can observe the external actions of any character at any time, but unlike a limited human observer, the writer can also peek into the inner workings of that character at will, as well.
  • Know when to hold back. Even though a writer can reveal any information they choose to reveal, it may be more beneficial to reveal some things gradually. For instance, if one character is supposed to have a mysterious aura, it would be wise to limit access to that character's inner feelings for a while before revealing his or her true motives.

  • Correct example: Bob said to Erika, “I think this is creepy. What do you think?”
  • Incorrect example: I thought this was creepy, and Bob and Erika thought so, too. What do you think?

Writing in Third Person Limited

Step 1 Pick a single character to follow.

  • The thoughts and feelings of other characters remain an unknown for the writer throughout the duration of the text. There should be no switching back and forth between characters for this specific type of narrative viewpoint.
  • Unlike first person, where the narrator and protagonist are the same, third person limited puts a critical sliver of distance between protagonist and narrator. The writer has the choice to describe one main character’s nasty habit — something they wouldn’t readily reveal if the narration were left entirely to them.

Step 2 Refer to the character's actions and thoughts from the outside.

  • In other words, do not use first person pronouns like “I,” “me,” “my,” “we,” or “our” outside of dialog. The main character's thoughts and feelings are transparent to the writer, but that character should not double as a narrator.
  • Correct example: “Tiffany felt awful after the argument with her boyfriend.”
  • Correct example: “Tiffany thought, “I feel awful after that argument with my boyfriend.”

Step 3 Focus on other characters' actions and words, not their thoughts or feelings.

  • Note that the writer can offer insight or guesses regarding the thoughts of other characters, but those guesses must be presented through the perspective of the main character.
  • Correct example: “Tiffany felt awful, but judging by the expression on Carl's face, she imagined that he felt just as bad if not worse.”

Step 4 Do not reveal any information your main character would not know.

  • Correct example: “Tiffany watched from the window as Carl walked up to her house and rang the doorbell.”

Writing in Episodically Limited Third Person

Step 1 Jump from character to character.

  • Limit the amount of pov characters you include. You don't want to have too many characters that confuse your reader or serve no purpose. Each pov character should have a specific purpose for having a unique point of view. Ask yourself what each pov character contributes to the story.
  • For instance, in a romance story following two main characters, Kevin and Felicia, the writer may opt to explain the inner workings of both characters at different moments in the story.
  • One character may receive more attention than any other, but all main characters being followed should receive attention at some point in the story.

Step 2 Only focus on one character's thoughts and perspective at a time.

  • Multiple perspectives should not appear within the same narrative space. When one character's perspective ends, another character's can begin. The two perspectives should not be intermixed within the same space.
  • Incorrect example: “Kevin felt completely enamored of Felicia from the moment he met her. Felicia, on the other hand, had difficulty trusting Kevin.”

Step 3 Aim for smooth transitions.

  • In a novel-length work, a good time to switch perspective is at the start of a new chapter or at a chapter break.
  • The writer should also identify the character whose perspective is being followed at the start of the section, preferably in the first sentence. Otherwise, the reader may waste too much energy guessing.
  • Correct example: “Felicia hated to admit it, but the roses Kevin left on her doorstep were a pleasant surprise.”
  • Incorrect example: “The roses left on the doorstep seemed like a nice touch.”

Step 4 Understand who knows what.

  • For instance, if Kevin had a talk with Felicia's best friend about Felicia's feelings for him, Felicia herself would have no way of knowing what was said unless she witnessed the conversation or heard about it from either Kevin or her friend.

Writing in Third Person Objective

Step 1 Follow the actions of many characters.

  • There does not need to be a single main character to focus on. The writer can switch between characters, following different characters throughout the course of the narrative, as often as needed.
  • Stay away from first person terms like “I” and second person terms like “you” in the narrative, though. Only use first and second person within dialog.

Step 2 Do not attempt to get into directly into a character's head.

  • Imagine that you are an invisible bystander observing the actions and dialog of the characters in your story. You are not omniscient, so you do not have access to any character's inner thoughts and feelings. You only have access to each character's actions.
  • Correct example: “After class, Graham hurriedly left the room and rushed back to his dorm room.”
  • Incorrect example: “After class, Graham raced from the room and rushed back to his dorm room. The lecture had made him so angry that he felt as though he might snap at the next person he met.”

Step 3 Show but don't tell.

  • Correct example: “When no one else was watching her, Isabelle began to cry.”
  • Incorrect example: “Isabelle was too prideful to cry in front of other people, but she felt completely broken-hearted and began crying once she was alone.”

Step 4 Avoid inserting your own thoughts.

  • Let the reader draw his or her own conclusions. Present the actions of the character without analyzing them or explaining how those actions should be viewed.
  • Correct example: “Yolanda looked over her shoulder three times before sitting down.”

How to Write a Biography in Third Person About Yourself

Writing an autobiography in the third person can be a challenging creative writing exercise as well as a practical necessity for career development. Many companies expect you to write in third person when you describe your accomplishments. This manner of writing helps to focus the subject matter while giving your work a professional tone. Whether you are writing about yourself for work or just stretching your creative muscles, writing an autobiography in the third person prompts personal reflection as you take note of your interests, dreams and accomplishments.

Write the objective of your autobiography at the top of a notebook page. The objective of a professional autobiography is to explain your experience; an informal autobiography explains your personal history or interests.

List your attributes, awards, interests and accomplishments. Minimize environmental distractions such as the television or radio and review old resumes to spark your memory.

Ask your friends or family to tell you about your attributes or history. Getting another person's perspective helps to remove subjectivity from the evaluation process. Add their input to your list.

Edit your list using your autobiography's objective as a guide. Delete or modify interests, accomplishments or facts that do not support or relate to your main point. Needless details can distract and mislead readers.

Organize your attributes list in a logical progression, such as chronological.

Write an outline of your autobiography using your organized attributes list. Divide your chronological outline into a beginning, middle and end. Your autobiography should progress from past accomplishments to present goals or interests. Set your outline aside.

Write your name and "is" to start a new paragraph in the third-person voice. Pretend you are writing about another person.

Write your beginning, middle and end paragraphs using your outline as a guide. Include a few personal details such as hobbies to reduce formality. Add details such as professional experience to make your work more formal.

Edit your writing for consistent tone and review your piece for grammatical errors. Ask another person to read your work to evaluate its flow and grammar.

How to Write a Killer Author Bio (With Template)

An author bio is a brief passage, usually about a paragraph , that introduces an author and sums up their work, their authorly credentials, and anything else their readers might need to know about them. 

While author bios may seem like an afterthought, or something to fill up the backmatter of your book , it’s actually an unassuming but valuable piece of copy. Done well, an author bio can give you credibility and introduce your readers to your other works. It can also be used in other promotional or publishing materials, as former Penguin Random House marketer Rachel Cone-Gorham explains:

“An author bio is something that will let readers get a sense of who you are, and is an important part for pitching media and book proposals.” 

For this reason, it’s important to get your bio right. Here is a 4-step process for writing your author bio:

1. Start with the facts readers need to know

2. open up with relevant biographical details, 3. wow them with your credentials, 4. finish it off with a personal touch.

Start your bio with an opening byline that quickly summarizes your profile, plus your most recent release. In a world full of skimmers, some readers may not get past the first couple of lines of your bio, so it’s important to frontload the essentials. 

For instance, a byline might read:

“Jane Doe is a Professor of Anthropology at UCLA and author of Insights Into Our Past: Tracing the Legacy of Intergenerational Trauma in 19th Century America .”

“Jane Doe is a poet, writer, and author of the new novel We Were Already There .”

If your work has won any prestigious awards or earned bestseller status, make sure to mention that here, too.

The great part about writing a one-liner as your opener is that it can double as a short bio for guest articles, social media, etc. — all of which can be a valuable part of your book publicity plan .

Top Tip: Write in the third person

Despite the fact that an author often writes or approves their own bio, it should be written in the third person — ‘they’ rather than ‘I’. Not only is this the industry standard, it also makes it easier to toot your own horn, which you should definitely be doing here.

Example: An author’s lived experience

One great example of a bio that shares biographical details is author Niyati Tamaskar , whose memoir Unafraid draws on her own experiences of cancer and the cultural baggage surrounding it. You can learn more about Niyati and her publishing story here .

Niyati Tamaskar is a mother, engineer, entrepreneur, public speaker, and author. She speaks on issues of cultural bias, the stigma of cancer, and more. Her speaking and media appearances include her signature TEDx talk, a cover and feature spread in Columbus magazine on her journey and message of destigmatizing cancer, and a video created by Breastcancer.org on “How Niyati Tamaskar Overcame Cultural Cancer Stigma to Become an Advocate”—aimed at highlighting the minority experience while facing cancer.

An important job of an “About the Author” section is to boost your credentials, says editor Rachel: “You want to show your qualifications and credibility so that a reader will feel validated in choosing your book to read.”

That being said, it’s not a good idea to start listing every softball trophy you won in middle school. Only stick to credentials that directly relate to the content of your book. According to Rachel, “Qualifications can include writing courses, college degrees, awards, bestseller lists, and accolades or, for fiction authors, even a lifetime of interest.” Here are a few of her examples:

Jane has an MFA in creative writing from Vermont College, and was the recipient of the Vermont College creative writing award.

Jane is a historian at Vermont College and has spent over a decade researching World War 2.

Jane has traveled extensively around Eastern Europe, learning about the history of the region and walking the paths of her characters.

For non-fiction authors, your credentials are incredibly relevant as readers are far more likely to trust an authority on a subject, while fiction authors can focus more on why they write in a specific genre.

Book marketing consultant Rob Eagar suggests that another way to boost your credibility is to “to weave in any endorsements you may have received from well-known outlets… Readers pay more attention to authors with a proven track record.”

For example:

[Famous author] says Jane Doe is a unique new voice in the thriller genre.

One author using their credentials to their best advantage is non-fiction author Amanda Ripley. Check out her “About the Author”:

Top tip: Keep it short

A good author bio is efficient beyond just the first line, as book launch specialist Joel Pitney suggests:

“People don't want to read long bios! Keep it under 300 words. Only include relevant materials and be as succinct as possible. If you've won a lot of awards, for example, only include the most impressive ones. Same goes if you’ve published a couple of books; only include your most successful three.”

Author bios are not a place for you to delve into a lengthy explanation of your history. However, you also don’t want your bio to be devoid of any personality. Adding a bit of color to your bio helps readers imagine who you are. Plus, if they can relate to you, it might be an extra push for them to buy your book. 

That’s why Joel Pitney suggests: “If there's room, and it's relevant, you can add some color, like where you live or something interesting that might not obviously relate to your writing career, but that makes you a more interesting person.”

This can be done subtly, like by referring to your location in your byline: 

“New-York based psychologist, Jane Doe…”

Or you can include a brief illustration of your lifestyle, says Rachel: “Jane lives and works out of her home at the base of Mount Washington in New Hampshire, and spends her summers hiking and camping with her two children and husband.”

Finally, marketing consultant Rob suggests closing out with a quippy-one liner that illustrates what kind of writer you are. “If your writing is known for its humor, let it show in your bio.” For example:

Jane hopes to write her next novel soon, if she can stop reading other people's novels instead.

Example: Natalie Barelli’s chatty tone

Excellent post! I really liked the way explained each point with examples. Author can write a big book but broke into sweat when it comes to write a bio about themselves. Sometimes they also need paper writing help. It have to be short and interesting, not boring. In that case your article will help them to write a killer one.

After Unexplained Infertility, Carli Lloyd Is Pregnant And Sharing Her Story For The First Time

Being a mom was always something I wanted, but it wasn’t necessarily something that was always on my mind. As a professional soccer player, I was on the sole mission of becoming the best in the world. In order to get there, I knew soccer had to be my number one priority. It would require a selfish mindset.

My husband, Brian, and I met in high school, so we’ve been together for 24 years. He supported me through every step of my career, and without his support, I never would have reached the heights I did.

When I retired in 2021 at age 39, I’d spent 34 years of my life playing soccer, 17 of them professionally. Having a baby was on our mind, and I thought putting it off for a little bit longer to enjoy life wouldn’t pose an issue. For the first time, soccer wasn’t my priority. I could actually choose what I wanted to do and spend time with Brian, my family, and my friends without soccer consuming my mind and body. (In retrospect, I wish I had been more educated about pregnancy and how to prepare for it, and that I looked years ago into the options I had for freezing my eggs.)

The only thing that changed when I retired was that I wasn’t training or playing. I was very grateful for the opportunities that continued to come my way. I was flying all over for appearances, shoots, speaking engagements, and filming for the Special Forces show, and I got to play in an amazing charity soccer match.

In the summer of 2022, Brian and I thought it was time to try to get pregnant and see where it would lead us. My whole life revolved around defying odds and proving people wrong. Soccer taught me how to work hard, persevere, be resilient, and never give up. I would do whatever it took to prepare, and usually when I prepared, I got results. But I found out that I didn’t know much about this world. I was very naive to think that we wouldn’t have any issues getting pregnant. And so it began. The casual whatever happens, happens turned into disappointment month after month. I was starting to feel like this was a race against the clock—my 40-year-old biological clock.

The journey began to eat me alive and consume me.

I kept saying to myself, “Why is my body failing me?” I had taken such good care of myself, was never a smoker, didn’t drink much. I started talking to a former teammate who had gone through similar struggles, and she helped guide me and encourage me. She suggested I start building a support team around me. I began doing acupuncture and going to a health and wellness center that could help with the process. Brian and I also decided to both get checked out to make sure there were no issues going on.

After getting all the necessary tests done, there was nothing standing in our way except my age. I left that visit with the doctor asking when I wanted to start in-vitro fertilization. I was taken aback, as we were in the early stages and I hadn’t even thought about IVF. I wasn’t ready to go down that road. In my mind, we could still get pregnant naturally and just needed to give it some time.

The months continued to pass, with the thought of trying to get pregnant constantly on my mind. I decided to schedule a consultation with another fertility doctor. I asked around about other doctors, and Dr. Louis Manara at the Center for Reproductive Medicine and Fertility in Voorhees, New Jersey, came highly recommended. At this point, my COBRA insurance that I had for a year after I retired was expiring. We didn’t have any insurance at the consult, but I didn’t care, as I wanted to hear what he had to say.

I met with Dr. Manara, who has been a fertility doctor since 1985. He gathered some information about myself and Brian. He was empathetic, knowledgeable, and honest. He said, “With your age and the timing, the best and most straightforward route is to do IVF.” I fought it so much up until this point. As a woman, I wanted to get pregnant naturally because that’s what our bodies are supposed to be capable of. I felt like my body let me down. But at that moment, I was ready to take the next steps.

The first time I sat in the waiting room, I remember feeling really ashamed and embarrassed. I wanted to put my head down, afraid that people would recognize me. I felt as if I shouldn’t be there. But as time went on, I realized that we’re all human and many women are going through similar struggles. There’s a stigma that comes with needing help or needing to go through fertility treatments. It isn’t talked about enough, but it’s just a different process ​​to get to the same end goal: becoming a parent.

We began our first round of IVF in April 2023.

Our plan was to stash as many embryos as we could because we would love to have two children, and now was the time to retrieve my eggs at a younger age. So, again, being a bit naive, I’m thinking, We’ll get four on the first one. Totally. Not a problem .

During my career, I put myself through rigorous workouts, did ice baths every day, and had a very high pain tolerance. I was always “no pain, no gain.” So, for me, the injections were the easy bit, and I did all of them myself. The hardest thing was the emotional toll. The uncertainty. The waiting. The constant worrying about what if .

I had 20 eggs retrieved, but we expected those numbers to dwindle after they were fertilized by day five and six. Then the numbers are expected to dwindle even more when the embryos are sent for genetic testing. So it was a waiting game that we literally had no control over. And it’s hard. I felt all the emotions during my career—stress, worry, fear, anxiety—but I’d never felt all the emotions that IVF brought on. I felt completely out of control. It’s an indescribable roller coaster unless you go through it.

After my first egg retrieval, I was waiting for the call to find out how many embryos had made it after day six. I was in Washington, D.C., in the dining hall of the Capitol building, doing media and meeting with senators about the excitement of the upcoming 2023 Women’s World Cup with the team at Fox Sports.

When the nurse called, I had to excuse myself. She told me that three embryos had made it, which meant we would likely end up with even less than that after genetic testing. The nurse needed an answer on whether we wanted to hold off on genetic testing and do another retrieval. We could group the first and second rounds together to save money, or go ahead with sending these three off to get tested. Genetic testing results usually took one to two weeks.

I started tearing up. The emotion hit me like a ton of bricks, and all I wanted was to be alone in private. I hadn’t said anything to my colleagues at Fox. I felt incredibly rude and apologized profusely, and they supported me even though they had no idea what was going on. Meanwhile, we started our tour around the Capitol building.

I called Brian and shared the news with him and couldn’t control my emotions. But I had to pull it together. I called my other friend who had gone through the IVF journey and was supporting me every step of the way, asking her if we should do another cycle right away or wait for the genetic results.

I was just so gutted. My expectation was that we would get enough embryos this first round, we would do a transfer, I would get pregnant, and then I would go work at the World Cup in July, and everything would be absolutely perfect. But life is never perfect and never how you plan it. That was when I realized you cannot have any expectations going through this process.

We decided to try a second round of IVF the following month.

We chose to pay to send the embryos off for genetic testing. We wanted to know how many genetically normal ones we had before we started a second round. Two of our embryos came back genetically normal, so now we had a bit of a dilemma. If we wanted two kids, both embryos would have to work. We went back and forth about whether to do another cycle, and there’s never a right or wrong answer. You just make a decision that inevitably decides the path. It’s also a costly decision.

A lot of this was paid out of pocket, because our health insurance didn’t cover it. I know that many people struggle to even be able to consider fertility treatments, so we were very grateful that more rounds of IVF was an option for us.

My schedule was insanely packed throughout this process, but this cycle was particularly challenging. Anyone who has gone through IVF knows that you are at the mercy of your body and you don’t control the timing. It took a lot of patience and understanding when my agent would tell some of the brands I was working with that, confidentially, I was going through this and we may need to reschedule some events. Believe it or not, I was able to get through everything seamlessly. One shoot I had with Delta required stopping the shoot so I could do my injections. We were shooting all over D.C., and I had a 15-minute window to duck into a hotel bathroom, do my shots, and come back out.

My body responded well to the medication and there were no issues retrieving eggs. The issue I was faced with was finding quality eggs that would fertilize and become strong embryos. This time, three made it to day six, and next was the genetic testing process.

I was in Los Angeles, about to host my soccer clinic, when the nurse called. I was walking to get breakfast with my cousin Jaime and my coach and friend Shaun. The nurse told me that zero embryos had come back genetically normal. The entire cycle was a wash—a complete waste of time and money.

My clinic was starting 30 minutes later in front of 100 kids, and once again I had to wipe away tears and carry on. My cousin Kerrie, who lives in Los Angeles, met us for dinner that night. Thankfully I was not alone and had Kerrie, Jaime, and Shaun by my side. I cried to Kerrie and Jaime in my hotel room, explaining the journey. They both said to stay hopeful and that it will work out the way it is supposed to work out.

At this point, I didn’t have time to do another retrieval cycle. I was leaving for Australia for the Women’s World Cup with Fox Sports at the beginning of July. I also was so emotionally drained that I needed a break. My thoughts were consumed with this. It was time to get away, let loose, have a cocktail or two, and enjoy my experience. And that is exactly what I did. I was surrounded by an incredible team of people working the Women’s World Cup, and it was the exact break I needed.

But I was still left with the decision of what to do. I s two embryos enough? Do we take our chances? Do I go through another retrieval? Brian was ready to go through with a transfer, but I wasn’t quite sure, and he knew I wasn’t ready to make a decision. But I didn’t need to have an answer right away. I had plenty of time to think.

We went ahead with our first embryo transfer in October.

When I came home from Australia in August, I purposely waited to start the transfer process until I had adjusted back to the time zone and was feeling good. No matter how much you want to speed up this process, you can’t. It is very time consuming and unpredictable. We had two frozen embryos, and we decided to take the chance with one. We felt that maybe these two were meant to be our children.

The embryo transfer was quick and easy. You don’t have to be put under anesthesia like you do with an egg retrieval. I was still feeling as if I could somehow control this journey, so I went to the grocery store and purchased all I could to help allow my body to accept this embryo—pomegranate juice, pineapple, nuts, teas. I kept my socks on daily. I did a medicated transfer, which required daily progesterone shots on my butt, alternating sides every day. It was much easier having Brian do these for me while I lay on my stomach. He never liked having to do these. I didn’t like them either. I bled and had bruises and knots on each side of my butt.

So now the waiting began. To be honest, it was torture. My life stopped completely, as I felt like I needed to control everything for this embryo to take. I was traveling around this time and needed to wait an extra few days to go to the doctor’s office to get blood work to see if I was pregnant. Usually I would have gone in nine days after the embryo transfer. In my case, it was 12 days later.

I was driving to our local dump to throw trash and cardboard out, which I do quite often, when I received a call from Dr. Manara right before I pulled in. My heart was beating so fast, and I was holding my breath.

He shared the bad news: I wasn’t pregnant. I felt sick to my stomach. He was heartbroken for us. He said that even when you take all these steps, there’s only a 60 percent chance of a successful transfer with genetically normal embryos, and sometimes it just doesn’t work out. He suggested we go ahead with another retrieval since now was the time to get as many embryos as we could for future children. That afternoon, I had to put a smile on my face, wipe away tears, and shoot some social media content. Life went on.

I wanted answers. I thought maybe there was something I did wrong. I felt hopeless. I didn’t see light at the end of the tunnel. I had never been this broken in my life, ever.

My life had been revolving around all of this, consuming me. Everything I ate or drank, anything I did, there would be guilt. Should I have this? Should I not have this? Should I work out? Should I not work out? I was literally driving myself crazy. Throughout this entire process, my schedule was busy and I was juggling so much. I’d have to leave my home, go speak or do a shoot, put on a happy face, and pretend that none of this was going on in my world when it was eating me up every single moment of the day.

I’ve felt every emotion throughout this process. When I look back at all the things I went through on the soccer field—whether it was a poor performance, getting benched, or missing a penalty kick in a World Cup final—there was always something I felt I could do to control the situation. I would go out and work 10 times harder. I was incredibly focused during my career. The majority of the time, the world saw me in competitor mode. A machine. I was often emotionless and numb because that’s the only way I felt I was able to survive and thrive.

But this situation hit me so differently. I wasn’t emotionless or numb. Some nights I would lie in bed crying uncontrollably to Brian. I cried and worried a lot. I leaned on Brian more than I ever had, as well as on my family and friends. For the first time in my life, I needed their support to keep going.

Ultimately, we chose to do a third round of IVF.

Growing up, my parents attended church and would take me and my sister and brother. We attended Sunday school and some youth group events, but it wasn’t something I necessarily enjoyed. Throughout my career, I had many teammates who would hold Bible study on the road, and I would occasionally join in. It wasn’t until after our failed transfer, where I felt lost and completely hopeless, that my faith kicked in. Former teammates of mine would send me prayers and encouragement. I truly believe that everything in our lives happens for a reason. You can’t always see it or feel it in the moment, but when you look back in time, you understand it.

When I called my parents to tell them our transfer didn’t work, they both said, “It just wasn’t meant to be. For whatever reason, God has other plans for you. Don’t lose hope.” And while hearing this was hard to process, it was the only thing I could hold on to. I had to believe that what is meant to be will be and to trust the process. It sounded familiar. Something I would constantly tell myself during my career.

At the start of our third cycle, my mindset was totally different. I finally surrendered. Whatever was meant to be would be, and I had to continue to live life. Life is short. I didn’t want time to pass on by and look back and say I didn’t enjoy my life while we were going through this. You don’t get time back. So I tried to stop thinking about the future and started living in the present, one day at a time. We have chickens, so I spent time outside in nature with them, and that was very therapeutic. I started to journal every day. I wrote down my fears and worries, I read, and I prayed. For once, I became vulnerable and leaned on all the support I had around me.

Brian and I had a vacation planned to the Bahamas in December, and of course, here we are on unplanned IVF cycle number three at the mercy of my body’s timing. We hoped it wouldn’t interfere with our trip, but we knew we couldn’t control that. Thankfully, our third retrieval ended up being a week prior to our departure. The nurse called and left a voicemail as we were flying to the Bahamas letting us know we had four embryos that made it to day six, which was great news for us. Those got shipped off for genetic testing—more waiting. Two of those four ended up being genetically normal. After three retrievals, we had three embryos, and we felt good about that. Dr. Manara felt good about it as well.

We started the transfer process at the beginning of January, and our transfer was at the end of the month. Of course we had another trip scheduled. This time, I was invited to play in the Waste Management Pro-Am in Phoenix. I was now worried whether it would be okay to play and swing a golf club while we waited to see if this embryo took. I consulted with Dr. Manara, and he said it would be okay. It was nice to be away and have a distraction. Since we were traveling, I wouldn’t be able to go into the office to get my blood drawn to see if I was pregnant. So, instead of having to wait until we got home, the office wrote me a script to go while in Scottsdale.

We got up early, took an Uber, and walked into a Labcorp. I expected the results to come back three days later, since it was a Friday. The next morning I woke up early and noticed an alert in my portal that I could view the results. Since this was a Saturday, no one was at Dr. Manara’s office, so I got the news before they could call to tell me. Without clicking on the downloaded version, I saw only my beta hCG level. I texted my friend—the one who had been supporting me throughout this journey—a screenshot of the number. She texted in all caps: “OMG CARLI!!!!! YOU ARE PREGNANT.” Brian was just waking up as I shared the news. We hugged and held each other and, for the first time in a long time, felt at peace.

I was finally pregnant, but we weren’t ready to celebrate just yet.

While I wanted to jump up and down and celebrate, we knew we weren’t out of the woods. We would have four more blood tests to make sure my hCG levels were rising, and the ultrasounds would follow. Every appointment brought anxiety. Our first ultrasound was to confirm that the gestational sac was inside the uterus and everything was looking good. Since we had a ski trip coming up the following week, we went back to the office two weeks later.

During our second ultrasound, we were thrown a curveball. The baby still had a heartbeat, but the measurement was calculated at five days behind, and Dr. Manara was concerned to see this in a genetically tested embryo for which we knew the exact date of the transfer. I immediately thought I did something wrong.

Dr. Manara assured me this had nothing to do with skiing or traveling. He did say, “I’m still hopeful, but I am concerned that this could potentially lead to a miscarriage.” We left that visit extremely uneasy and worried. And I was leaving for Mexico the next day. We now had to wait another week after I returned from my travels to go back and make sure that everything was okay. Again, we held on to that faith that God has a plan and it will work out the way it is supposed to work out. I continued to journal. But it was never off my mind. I feared I’d miscarry at any moment.

This next appointment couldn’t come any faster. To say we were anxious and worried was an understatement. I felt as if everyone in the office was anxiously waiting as well. The ultrasound tech was quick to get in and make sure there was a heartbeat. And we had a heartbeat! What a relief. And the baby had gained a day and was now measuring four days behind. Dr. Manara was feeling a lot better after this visit, but he still wanted to check again, so we came back four days later to do another ultrasound.

Each week we went back, we would go in holding our breath. The ultrasound tech would say, “Okay, there’s a heartbeat,” and we all could breathe again. We didn’t want to let ourselves get too excited. But with every appointment since then, the baby’s been steadily progressing each week.

After 10 weeks of monitoring this pregnancy, it was time to graduate. In the IVF world, you graduate from your fertility clinic and then start going to your ob-gyn. It was bittersweet, and I knew I would miss everyone in the office. The most exciting moment was when I was done with the daily progesterone shots. I had some serious scar tissue, knots, and bruises that I couldn’t wait to go away.

Dr. Manara’s office is a very small practice with very special people. They made me feel comfortable and truly cared about me as a patient. Dr. Manara is the best; I am so grateful for the way he handles his patients, the knowledge and expertise he provides, and the care and empathy he showed throughout our entire journey. At every visit he is face to face with his patients, going over everything and answering any questions. I couldn’t have been any happier with my experience there.

It is still hard to believe I am pregnant. It truly is a miracle, and we are so excited to be parents!

I want to show other women going through IVF that they are not alone, and that good can come from this.

I’ve conquered the soccer world and I consider myself to be really strong, but I was at my weakest during this entire process. I want to show other women that it’s okay to struggle. It’s okay to feel broken and to feel hopeless, but to never give up and to keep going. We don’t know the future chapters of our lives, and it is important to just keep putting one foot in front of the other.

I went from feeling embarrassed, ashamed, and afraid to tell people that I was going through IVF to now wanting to share my story to help others. In times of struggle, we see what we are made of. We grow. We learn. And most important, we have more appreciation for the things we do have in life.

Going through something like IVF also puts things into perspective. I’ve been blessed with many things in my life. It was not easy for Brian and me to navigate the journey from high school to attending different colleges, to a professional career, and then a long-distance relationship as I traveled the world. Our relationship continues to be tested and strengthened. This experience brought us closer than I had ever imagined. I couldn’t have gotten through it without him. He kept me going. He would say, “Just trust. Trust that it’s going to work out.” His strength and calmness was something I never realized I needed.

I always try to extract positive things or lessons that come out of struggle. And there are many things, but the one that is truly special is that it brought me closer to my parents, as well as my sister and my brother, after years of not speaking. We can never get back lost time, but we can soak up all the present and future times together, and I am grateful for that. We are truly blessed with the family and friends we have in our lives who were there for us when we needed them the most.

Since I retired, my heart has come alive. I have felt I can be more like myself. I am not in the pressure cooker anymore. I can let my guard down and be more vulnerable. For those who have never experienced the national team, it’s hard to truly understand how cutthroat it is. For 17 years, I was a machine. I was on a mission. And the only way I felt I could achieve my dreams was to be like this. The women’s national team either makes you or breaks you. Only the strong survive. And now for the first time in my life, I needed others to help carry me along.

I have been told that nothing I have accomplished or faced in my soccer life will ever be as great as being a mom. I know this will change me forever, and I am so excited for the journey. This was not an easy journey, but that’s true of most things in life that are worthwhile. Brian and I look forward to loving and raising a strong little one to be the best version of themselves.

My story is currently a happy one, but I know there are other women who are facing challenges in their pregnancy journey. I see you and I understand your pain. My hope is that more and more women will speak up about this topic, because their stories helped me. I also wish for more resources, funding, and education around fertility treatments. There is much to be done, and I hope I can play a role in helping.
