HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT 1
- The Importance of Food.
- Chemical Energy: Differences between ADP and ATP, the structure of the ATP molecule, details on how ADP becomes ATP.
- The Relationship Between Photosynthesis and Respiration.
- An Overview of Respiration: Definition of respiration, equation for respiration, anaerobic and aerobic respiration, stages of respiration (glycolysis, Krebs cycle, electron transport chain.)
- Glycolysis: Definition, occurs in cytoplasm, students will label a diagram showing the key points of glycolysis, ATP production, NADH production, end products.
- Advantages and disadvantages of Glycolysis.
HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT 2
- The Fate of Pyruvic Acid: What happens to the pyruvic acid? There are two possibilities for pyruvic acid depending on whether or not oxygen is present. Students label a diagram showing both possibilities.
- Introduction to Aerobic Respiration: Students label a diagram showing each stage of respiration, the location in the cell where each stage occurs, and the production of NADH, FADH2, and ATP for each phase.
- Differences in cellular respiration in prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells.
- Structure of the Mitochondria: Students will label a drawing of the mitochondria with outer membrane, inner membrane, matrix, and cristae. Functions of each part are covered.
- The Bridge Reaction: What happens to pyruvic acid as it enters the mitochondria? Covers reactants, products, carbon dioxide production, formation of NADH and acetyl-CoA. Students will label a diagram showing this reaction.
- Krebs Cycle: Students will label a diagram showing the key points of the Krebs cycle, carbon dioxide production, ATP production, NADH production.
- Summary of total number of ATP, CO 2 , NADH, FADH 2 produced per molecule of glucose.
HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT 3
- Electron Transport Chain: Purpose of the ETC, students will label a diagram showing the key points of the ETC, the flow of hydrogen ions across cristae membranes, ATP synthase, the production of large numbers of ATP.
- ATP accounting: Number of ATP produced by stage of respiration, total number produced per molecule of glucose.
- Fermentation: Definition of fermentation, why fermentation occurs, two types of fermentation.
- Alcoholic Fermentation: Reactants, products, production of ATP, CO 2 , and ethyl alcohol.
- Lactic Acid Fermentation: Reactants, products, production of lactic acid, cramping of muscle tissue.
- The Evolution of Anaerobic and Aerobic Pathways.
- Comparison of photosynthesis to cellular respiration.
All answers are included in the very detailed 13 page teacher guide that is included with this product.
