Translation

The nectar of Your words and the descriptions of Your activities are the life and soul of those suffering in this material world. These narrations, transmitted by learned sages, eradicate one’s sinful reactions and bestow good fortune upon whoever hears them. These narrations are broadcast all over the world and are filled with spiritual power. Certainly those who spread the message of Godhead are most munificent.

King Pratāparudra recited this verse to Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu during Lord Jagannātha’s Ratha-yātrā festival. While the Lord was resting in a garden, King Pratāparudra humbly entered and began massaging His legs and lotus feet. Then the King recited the Thirty-first Chapter of the Tenth Canto of the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam , the songs of the gopīs. The Caitanya-caritāmṛta relates that when Lord Caitanya heard this verse, beginning tava kathāmṛtam, He immediately arose in ecstatic love and embraced King Pratāparudra. The incident is described in detail in the Caitanya-caritāmṛta ( Madhya 14.4-18), and in his edition Śrīla Prabhupāda has given extensive commentary on it.

Please log in or register to answer this question., c hatra jeevan par nibandh.

(Student Life).

GS-I: Ancient History

Prelims : History of India

Mains : Salient aspects of Art Forms, Literature and Architecture from ancient to modern times

Lord Mahavir's preachings were orally and methodically compiled by his immediate disciples, known as the Ganadharas, and elder monks, known as Srut-kevalis, into many texts (scriptures). The sacred books of the Jain religion are known as Jain Agam or Agam Sutras. They are said to be originally compiled by the Ganadharas, the Chief Disciples of Mahavira. They can be broadly divided into two major categories: Canonical or religious texts called Jain Agamas or Agam and Non-canonical literary works.

Apart from writing in Prakrit and Ardha Magadhi , Jain monks wrote in many other languages, depending on the era, region, and patrons who supported them. During the Sangam period in South India, they wrote in Tamil. They also used Sanskrit , Shauraseni , Gujarati , and Marathi to write.

Evolution of Jain Literature

Tirthankaras taught in a divine preaching hall called S amavasarana , which ascetics and laypersons heard.

  • These discourses were called Shrut Jnana and always comprised eleven angas and fourteen purvas.
  • According to Jain tradition, the divine Shrut Jnana of a Tirthankara is then converted into Sutta by his disciples, and from such suttas emerge the formal canons.
  • One of its sutras, Parasparopagraho Jivanam, is the motto of Jainism .
  • It is accepted as authoritative in both Svetambara and Digambara.

Types of Jain Literature

The Jain literature is classified into two major categories: Digambara and Svetambara.

Svetambara Siddhanta

According to Svetambara tradition, the agamas were composed in the first Jain council (300 BC) at Patliputra.

The canons of Svetambara are composed of twelve Angas, twelve Upangas, ten Prakirnakas, four Mulasutras, six Chedasutras, and two Chulika sutras.

  • It was recompiled and edited by KshamaShraman Devardhigani.

Svetambara Texts

Digambara siddhanta.

The Digambara canon, or Siddhanta, comprises numerous texts. Two are believed to be all that remains of the original Purvas, composed in the 2nd to 3rd centuries.

  • The two oldest scriptures are the holiest because they contain elements of the Purvas created by Mahavira’s chief disciples that captured and shaped his teachings.
  • Both the Shatkhandagama and Kasayapahuda are highly technical works on karma.

Digambara texts

Pyqs on jain literature.

FAQs on Jain Literature

How is jain literature classified.

There are two major categories of Jain literature: Agam and Canonical Literature (Agam Sutras). Agam literature comprises many texts that are sacred books in the Jain religion. They are written in the Ardha-magadhi Prakrit language.

What are Svetambara canons?

What is jain agamas.

The Jainas refer to their sacred literature as Agamas, which is written in Prakrit, similar to the Buddhist Pitakas in Pali and the Brahmanical Vedas in Sanskrit. The Jaina Agamas, like the Buddhist Pitakas, contain the sermons of their founders.

What languages were used to write the Jain literature?

Jain monks wrote in a variety of languages, in addition to Prakrit and Ardha Magadhi, depending on the era, region, and patrons who supported them. They wrote in Tamil during the Sangam period in South India. They also wrote in Sanskrit, Shauraseni, Gujarati, and Marathi.

What was the "diksha" ceremony in Jainism?

The "diksha" ceremony in Jainism is an official initiation ceremony through which individuals become Jain monks or nuns. The term "diksha" itself translates to "consecration" or "initiation." During this ceremony, individuals renounce their ordinary lives and take vows of celibacy, non-violence, truthfulness, non-attachment, and other principles of Jainism.

What are Jainism's significant contributions and impacts on society?

Jainism has impacted Indian and global society in many ways. In India, Jains significantly influenced philosophy and ethics through concepts such as Karma, Ahimsa, Moksha, and reincarnation. Jains in the wealthier classes also contributed to the development of society through investment in schools, colleges, and hospitals.

Anayasena Maranam

Description

1) A painless, peaceful trouble-free death 2) A life without shortage for my basic needs (as long as I am alive, please let me have the dignity to be able to live a life where I do not have to go beg for resources from others. Let there be enough when I truly need it in my life). 3) A life filled with total, unwavering devotion towards you and when my soul leaves this body, I must only remember you.

The 3rd request is key. When my soul leaves this body, I must only remember you. Because if you don’t remember the Lord at the moment of death, it means you are remembering something else. And whatsoever, whosoever we remember at the moment of death has a direct impact on where we end up in the next birth. Lord Krishna states this clearly in the Bhagavad Gita, Chapter 8: Verse 6: yaṃ yaṃ vāpi smaranbhāvaṃ tyajatyante kalevaram taṃ tamevaiti kaunteya sadā tadbhāvabhāvitaḥ Whosoever, at the end, leaves the body, thinking of any being, to that being only he goes, O son of Kunti, because of his constant thought of that being.

For most people, as the body is about to die, there is usually pain, sometimes extreme. There is fear, worry. There is loss of memory, loss of consciousness. Or there is a deep concern for loved ones, property, business etc, etc. We can now see how difficult it is to remember God at that time. Especially at the final moment, at that last breath. Therefore one has to start thinking of the Lord or repeating his Name, as early as possible in life so that it becomes a deep-rooted habit. Now, one might think, I will start thinking of the Lord once I am older and closer to death. It doesn’t work that way. The mind forms deep channels of whatever habitual thoughts repeat themselves. Therefore Iswhara Smaranam – remembering the Lord has to be done continuously. That’s why Hindus name their children after God, so that each time they call them, knowingly or unknowingly they are calling the Lord’s name. As we make it a habit to take frequent breaks during the day to remember His form or remember His name, or remember His attributes, it slowly gets ingrained in us. Even in our sleep when we start to see the Lord in our dreams, that is a good sign. After all, death is nothing but an extended sleep between births. Thus, the only way to remember the Lord at the exact moment of death, is to practice doing it continuously now. Hence we pray for a life filled with devotion. This prayer is a great way to remember the Lord.

Another version Also referred to as Drona Sthuthi, ascribing it to the prayer of the great Sri Dronacharya to Lord Krishna. Other references ascribe this prayer as Sri Vidhura’s to Lord Krishna.

Chatra Asantosh-Karan aur Samadhan
