Exploring Creative Writing with Your Child
Creative writing is not only a fun activity to do with your children, but it can also benefit them academically, professionally and personally.
Children have such fantastic imaginations and parents can help to develop these further using many simple, but fun activities. Here are a few ideas from a private school in Hadley Wood , to help expand your child’s creative writing skills and boost their imagination:
♥ It is important to read with your child as often as possible. Regular reading will improve your child’s vocabulary and grammar skills, as well as introduce them to a variety of writing styles and genres.
♥ Does your child have a favourite book or author? This can help them to develop their own style of writing – Your first creative writing activity could be making imagining a new ending to their favourite story. Together you can explore how simple changes to events in the story, can lead to a completely different ending.
♥ When practicing creative writing, ask your child to focus on a topic that really interests them. This will help to make this learning exercise more enjoyable and keep them motivated to complete their story.
♥ Once you have chosen a topic, build a ‘mind map’ of words relating to this theme. A good way to do this is by asking your child to think about how their topic could affect their senses. For example, a jungle story might include seeing trees, feeling hot and hearing animal noises! Creating a mind map can also help your child to establish a story setting, as well as new characters.
♥ Another tip for helping your child to build a story is creating a problem for the characters to solve. This will help them to create a storyline with an effective ending.
♥ Finally, one of the hardest things about writing a story is the first sentence. Help your child to get started by giving them an interesting opening line. To give you some inspiration, take a look at the first line inside some of your child’s favourite books.
From playgroups, education and English Tutors to events, activities and fun for all the family, you are in the right place!

Welcome to the Irregular Writers Collective at Tunbridge Wells
We are a group of writers of fiction, non-fiction, poetry and plays, based in Tunbridge Wells. Our objective is to help writers write and get published and have fun along the way.
All members are encouraged to contribute towards our goals, which are...
To help writers write
Providing constructive feedback is very much a part of our ethos. We believe that this is the best way to improve one's work. Sometimes you may want to read at the meetings; you may also want to get in-depth feedback of your work, in which case you'll find that many of us are willing to help.
To share our writing in an informal way and have some fun, we dedicate some meetings to themes - flash fiction, fan fiction, short poetry, haiku and more. Around Hallowe'en we hold a Fright Night, where we share scary short stories, poems or other works.
To help writers get published
We are not literary agents or commercial publishers. But that doesn't mean we can't help each other to get published. One method is via our own publication programme. Another way is by learning from members who have published their work, either with a commercial publisher or through self-publishing. Periodically we ask literary agents and publishers to sit in on our meetings.
Sounds good? Explore our site for more information...

We are currently meeting virtually via Zoom. If you'd like details of how to join, email us or check out our Facebook page.
