• Create original written work in a range of styles by refining and elaborating on skills developed in an introductory creative writing course.
• Apply strategies, literary concepts, and critical theories drawn from a range of established writers in composing and revising original works. 
• Generate and respond to peer feedback in a collaborative and recursive writing process.
• Survey and compare outlets for publishing in alignment with your author identity and readership, such as literary journals, small/micro presses, chapbooks, digital media, and/or self-publishing.
• Differentiate between the various processes and roles within the publishing profession, including author representation, developmental editing, copyediting, distribution, and promotion.

Creative Writing II

About the course.

This continuation course in creative writing in English deepens and focuses the student’s awareness of imaginative writing craft in a single genre. It centers on the practice of intermediate technical and formal aspects of imaginative writing along with their theoretical and historical foundations. The course aims to produce a writing student who can balance practice and theory, creative and critical thinking, as well as the academic and the vocational. While developing the craft of writing, the student acquires numerous transferable skills useful in various professions where written communication and creative content are key.

The study of the written forms of the screenplay and the script (stage play) and their relationship to the adapted forms in the visual media and on stage, and the practice of writing screenplays and stage plays. The dual nature of this course requires that students learn the principles of writing for visual media and writing for the stage but allows the student to focus the major written works composed during the semester in his preferred area.

In addition to the courses and electives within the major, SNHU's online writing degree program includes 30 credits of free electives. This leaves you with room to choose courses or a minor in an area of study that you'd like to write about – like history or psychology – or the opportunity to complement your studies with career skills, such as graphic design or marketing. The amount of free electives also makes our creative writing degree an attractive option for transfer students.

• Online MA in English and Creative Writing: Building on the learnings from your bachelor's degree, you can choose from the same 4 concentrations – fiction, nonfiction, screenwriting or poetry – in this 36-credit online master's in writing  program,  which allows you to develop creative works that can contribute to your professional advancement.
• Online MFA in Creative Writing: Gain both the writing skills and the professional skills to succeed in areas like marketing, publishing, content writing, teaching and freelancing in this fully online, 48-credit online MFA in creative writing  program. You can also focus on a wide range of fiction genres – such as contemporary, romance, young adult or speculative – plus you'll add one of two embedded certificates to your program: professional writing or the online teaching of writing.
• Low-Residency MFA in Fiction or Nonfiction: This highly focused 2-year program consists of 4 workshops and 4 in-person, weeklong residencies in New Hampshire. Within the 60-credit low-residency MFA  program, you'll complete both a manuscript suitable for submission to editors and a critical essay that's ideal for literary journals.

Novel Writing II

Are you ready to develop a significant portion of your novel? This workshop will bring you valuable feedback on your work, including suggestions for revision. Class discussion will focus on the structure of the novel in its entirety. Participants will submit portions of their novels to be read and discussed in class. They will explore issues of craft as they arise, drawing on their previous knowledge, experience, and suggested readings.

Note:  Prerequisite: A passing grade of Novel Writing I (WCWP40187) is required before enrolling in this course.
