Model Answer :

A healthy body is a healthy mind. Cycling has many potential benefits to people’s physical and psychological health . However, the use of bicycles by the people as a mode of commute is decreasing due to many reasons. Some of the possible solutions to encourage people to use bikes have been discussed below.

cycling essay for ielts

The potential factors that reduce the usage of bikes in a cosmopolitan city like Melbourne are the following. Firstly, increase in population is directly proportional to rise in traffic congestion, which results in bumper to bumper traffic. In such cases, cyclists may find it hazardous to ride on these roads. Secondly, there are not enough bicycle lanes for a safe journey during peak hours of traffic. Thirdly, due to the busy schedule and fast paced life people are not choosing bikes. As riding a bicycle to work may need a shower or change of formal clothes. Finally, people are not sufficiently conscious of adverse effects to the environment when cars fuelled by fossil fuels are used. Thus, proving us that bikes have become the last option as a means of transport for people.

People can be encouraged to ride bikes by constructing exclusive bike lanes for safe riding. Besides bike lanes, the people who drive cars should be aware of bike users when driving. Additionally, the government and the workplace should conduct campaigns to create awareness among the people about using bikes. For instance, they could offer free bike parking facility near offices and public transports. This would conserve the environment as well as enhance physical fitness of the citizens. They should also stress the importance of the well-being of employees and individuals. Hence, the government should motivate the people who chose to live environmentally responsible lives by offering them incentives.

In conclusion, the government and the employer could play a prominent role, in getting people back to choose bikes to travel. Cyclists should be made to feel comfortable and safe, which is in the hands of the government and the community.

IELTS essay sample | Why is cycling becoming less popular?

by Manjusha Nambiar · September 19, 2016

Essay topic

Cycling has many benefits, yet in some countries there is a decrease in the number of people using bicycles as their main form of transportation. Why is it happening? Give suggestions how to encourage people to use bicycles again.

Sample essay

Cycling has several health benefits. It is also an environment friendly means of transport. Even so, cycling is becoming less and less popular. There are several reasons for this.

First, there are no dedicated lanes for cyclists in most towns and cities. Cycling on a busy road is a dangerous activity. Even bikes are not safe in cities. When our cities and towns are not cycle-friendly, we cannot blame people for not using cycles. If there are dedicated lanes for cyclists, I am sure a lot of people living in urban areas will switch to this mode of traveling. It should be noted that cycling is still very popular in countries like China where the right infrastructure exists.

Second, cycling is not suitable for long distance travel. Unlike driving, cycling is a strenuous activity. Cycles can only be used for traveling short distances. This is another factor that worked against cycles.

Third, cycling is not considered as ‘cool’. A cycle serves more or less the same purpose as a motorbike. It is much cheaper and doesn’t require any fuel. Still, people ditch their bicycles and buy bikes if they can afford them. The fact that a cycle is an inexpensive vehicle makes it less fashionable or attractive. This might sound strange but it is true.

To conclude, several factors have contributed to the waning popularity of cycling. Cycling is healthy but it is not exactly safe especially in cities where the traffic is heavy. If the government wants to promote cycling, the first thing it needs to do is to create separate lanes for cyclists.

Summarize your answers

Sample Essay

It has been a while since the eco-friendly transportation “bicycle” was first introduced, and its popularity seems to have declined in many countries over time. However, some effective measures could help encourage people in society to use it more widely.

On a positive note, there are many benefits of riding a bicycle. The increased usage of private cars is a significant cause of air pollution and global warming. A cycle does not have any exhausts. As such, the adoption of this mode of transportation by more people results in less emission of greenhouse gasses and a reduction in air contamination. The lower pollution index in Amsterdam, a city where the majority of the residents use bikes for commuting, is a good indicator of how the usage of bicycles instead of personal vehicles abate pollution. In addition, it is advantageous for people who lead a sedentary lifestyle. Many professionals these days develop numerous diseases from a tender age because of the lack of sufficient exercise. A daily ride to the office on a cycle gives them the requisite workout needed daily without even going to a gym or jogging. Furthermore, they are easier to drive on the congested roads in cities.

A few decades ago, the bicycle was one of the main transportations around the globe. But, with the popularity of motorized vehicles, the use of cycles has decreased drastically. The prime disadvantage of pedal cycles is that they cannot be used as a faster mode of transport. It is time-consuming for one who stays at a place that is some miles away from their work in daily life. Ultimately, we cannot rely on bicycles to reach our daily office work. If one uses a cycle, there is a more probability that they may miss their deadlines. As a result, people prefer a faster mode of transport like public buses, trains or their own bike, car. Moreover, the safety of cyclists is a grave issue when dedicated roads are not built for them. Finally, bicycles lost their appeal in many countries where people prioritized comfort over an active lifestyle.

In conclusion, I firmly believe that the demerits of using bicycles are easily outclassed by its gains. The government should encourage people to use them more by creating dedicated lanes and bike storage units throughout the cities.

Sample Essay 1

Nowadays, cycling has become less popular and the least used travel option, even though it is good for the environment and has numerous health benefits. This essay will discuss how safety concern is deterring people from cycling and how the governmental safety measures and promotional campaigns can bring back its popularity.

Collision concern is the main reason behind the fall of cycling’s popularity. People do not like cycling amongst traffic or pedestrians, as both options involve high risk of collision. This unsafe cycling accounts for most of the road accidents, ranging from death to some nonfatal injuries, such as common abrasions, cuts, and bruises . In fact, many locations in various cities do not have separate cycling tracks, which is a sort of hindrance to novice riders. From a statistical standpoint, bicycle rider has a higher casualty rate per trip or per mile of travel than that of being a passenger in an automobile. For instance, nearly one in ten cycle travellers in the UK faces minor accidents while riding in the city.

However, governments can bring back the popularity of cycling by introducing a rider safety scheme and promoting the health benefits of transport. They can provide dedicated lanes for cycling on most of the major streets. The lanes could be 2.5 meter wide of both sides of the road, fully segregated from pedestrians and automobiles. Moreover, highlighting its immense health benefit, regular promotional campaigns could run through different online platforms. These awareness and safety measures encourage people to use a bicycle as their regular mode of transport. For instance, almost every person in Denmark owns a bicycle, which is due to the safety aggressive promotion by the government.

In conclusion, because of safety concern, cycling is losing its popularity day by day. However, it can be brought back by proper governmental actions, such as promoting its health benefits and ensuring segregated cycling lanes on both sides of all the major roads.

Despite the undeniable advantages that cycling offers as a healthier and more environmentally friendly mode of transport, its popularity is on a noticeable decline. This essay explores the underlying causes of this downward trend and proposes solutions to revitalise cycling’s appeal to the masses.

One primary reason for cycling’s diminishing allure is the growing concern for safety on the roads. With traffic congestion worsening in urban areas, cyclists find themselves navigating alongside larger, faster vehicles, leading to a heightened fear of accidents. Furthermore, the lack of adequate cycling infrastructure, such as dedicated bike lanes, exacerbates these safety concerns. Additionally, the convenience offered by motorised transport often overshadows the health and environmental benefits of cycling. The allure of quicker, effort-minimal travel options in our fast-paced society makes them more appealing to the general public, thereby sidelining cycling as a preferred mode of transport.

Addressing these challenges requires a multi-faceted approach. Firstly, enhancing cycling infrastructure is paramount. The development of more dedicated bike lanes, coupled with the implementation of strict traffic regulations to protect cyclists, can significantly mitigate safety concerns. Moreover, raising awareness about the environmental and health benefits of cycling is crucial. Public campaigns highlighting the notion "cycling is a healthier and more environmentally friendly form of transport" can foster a cultural shift towards valuing sustainable modes of transport. Additionally, initiatives like bike-sharing schemes and incentives for cycling to work could further encourage people to opt for this green mode of transportation.

In conclusion, while cycling is undeniably a healthier and more environmentally friendly form of transport, its waning popularity underscores the need for concerted efforts to address safety concerns and enhance the convenience it offers. By investing in infrastructure, promoting its benefits, and incentivizing its use, we can rekindle the public’s interest in cycling as a preferred mode of transportation, thus contributing to a healthier society and a cleaner environment.

Sample Essay 3

It is irrefutable that riding bicycle does wonder not only for people’s health but also for the environment. Nevertheless, there is a downward tendency of using this mode of transport over the last few years. This essay is going to examine the reasons behind this trend before offering some solutions to mitigate the problems.

There are some compelling reasons why more and more people are indifferent towards riding bike. First of all, cycling is, more often than not, not a safe choice when riding on roads, especially on the busy ones due to lack of separate lanes for bicycle users. The implication of this is that bike users tend to use the same lane with cars and other heavy vehicles, like bus or tram, so the likelihood of causing accident is too high. In addition to this, people can only ride bicycle within a short distance, whereas using cars and public transport can take them to anywhere regardless the distance. Also, people with hectic schedule often do not have enough time for themselves, let alone choosing to ride bicycle to work or school which would cost them a lot of time.

Nevertheless, I believe that the aforementioned reasons are not intractable, and there are some solutions that can be offered to address the issue. To begin with, governments should channel into road improvement projects. For example, widening the road with a separate bicycle lane from other transports would be of tremendous benefits to increase road safety. Moreover, setting up more bicycle stations can encourage people to rent it more in accordance with their convenience. The final suggestion could be organizing campaigns to raise awareness among road users. For instance, the masses should be engaged in an occasional cycling tour to make them realize the incredible benefits that cycling can offer.

In conclusion, while there are some reasons behind the downward trend of riding bicycles around the world, I am strongly convinced that there are a number of ways in which cycling can gain back its position.

Sample Essay 4

Cycling is known to be an eco-friendly form of transportation, but it is recently becoming less popular among people. The recession of this trend is due to people choosing faster means of transportation, and to feeling unsafe when cycling. However, highlighting the benefits of cycling and developing larger lanes will make this trend popular again.

To begin with, people choosing to adopt a faster way of transportation is the main reason behind not using bicycles anymore. They prefer to commute and arrive early, rather than making an effort and taking more time to arrive at their work. For instance, youngsters prefer commuting overriding a bike to arrive at their college, since it is faster and trendier. Above that, people claim that tight and narrow lanes generate accidents, and therefore they feel unsafe and unprotected when cycling.

For that matter, schools and parents can encourage their pupils to cycle again by informing them about the numerous benefits of cycling. By highlighting the advantages of cycling, such us losing weight, children will be encouraged to move around using their bicycles. On top of that, governments must develop larger lanes to prevent accidents from happening. As a result, people will feel confident that using that method of transportation will not make them encounter any unpleasant accidents.

To conclude, cycling has become less popular because of the changes in people’s transportation methods. They tend to prefer faster and safer means of travelling around. To seize down this trend, schools and caregivers must enlighten their offspring about the prolific benefits of cycling. Moreover, governments should re-establish lanes’ dimensions in order to make them more secure. Nonetheless, all countries should take actions towards encouraging people to use this environmentally friendly form of transportation.

Essay of the Week: Cycling to work

Our band nine sample essays give you the opportunity to learn from successful essays that show off the best structure, vocabulary and grammar. This is a two-part question about why people don't cycle more and what we can do to bring more cyclists to the streets.

Essay of the Week: Cycling to Work

Each week we share an IELTS writing question with our mailing list. The following week, we share a sample answer. The idea is to demonstrate good essay-writing technique while giving an opportunity to practice your IELTS writing.

Despite the health benefits and positive effect on traffic congestion, many people prefer to drive to work than to ride a bicycle. Why is this? What can be done to encourage cycling?

Although cycling is a great workout and beneficial for saving space on our busy roads, it is still common for people to get about by car. In this essay, I will, first, argue that people are often too afraid to cycle in cities. Second, I will explore how they can be coaxed back to cycling by making roads safer.

One reason for people’s reticence to cycle is that roads in modern cities are very dangerous. As cities have become more populated, the number of cars on the road has increased, making roads more dangerous for cyclists. In addition, because of the increasing popularity of large cars, like SUVs, the consequences for cyclists of being in a car accident have become more severe. If the number and consequences of road traffic accidents becomes worse, it is only natural for cyclists to take to the road in fewer numbers.

However, it is possible to encourage cyclists to return to the road by making them safer. If cyclists felt reassured that roads were not dangerous, there are many good reasons to return. One measure that can achieve this is to introduce new bike lanes, which keep cars and bicycles separate. In addition, because driver education courses can make them more aware of cyclists, governments should invest in them. Finally, it is possible to add financial pressure by subsidising cycling and taxing cars.

In conclusion, one major reason for the lack of cyclists on city streets is the dangers associated with bike riding. However, it is possible to encourage cyclists to begin to ride again by making roads safer.

Bài mẫu IELTS Writing Task 2: Chủ đề “cycling”

Cycling is more environmentally friendly than other forms of transport. Why is it not popular in many places? And how to increase its popularity?

Although riding a bicycle is clearly a better way to protect the environment than using other types of vehicles, not many people around the world prefer this means of transport. There are several causes of this unpopularity, and some solutions could be proposed to promote the usage of bicycles.

To begin with, there are several reasons why few people use bicycles to travel on a regular basis. Firstly, since modern life is getting much busier than in the past, individuals nowadays want to spend as little time on transport as possible. Therefore, they prefer to use other types of vehicles such as motorbikes or cars which would take less time. Secondly, cycling is more physically demanding than riding a motorbike or driving a car. This tends to discourage people from choosing this method, especially on a hot and sunny day or when they have to travel a long distance.

Several actions can be taken to increase the popularity of bicycles. The first solution would be to make it more costly to own a motorbike or a car. This can be done by increasing the price of petrol or raising tax on these vehicles. As a result, more people would choose bicycles as their primary means of transport. Additionally, more lanes should be built to serve only cyclists, which would make it much faster to travel with bicycles. The final solution is to launch campaigns to raise citizens’ awareness of the harmful effects of motorbikes and cars on the environment, and this could encourage people to cycle more often.

In conclusion, there are some reasons why bicycles are becoming less common in today’s world, and solutions should be produced early to promote this environmentally friendly means of transport.

Câu hỏi & câu trả lời mẫu IELTS Speaking – topic Cycling

1. do you like cycling.

Absolutely yes. I love all environmentally-friendly transportations like cycles or electric trams. As these means of transport release no exhaust emissions into the air, they can help to protect the environment. Besides, cycling is good for my health.

  • environmentally-friendly transportations /ɪn.vaɪ.rənˌmen.təl.i ˈfrend.li/ (noun) : những phương tiện giao thông thân thiện với môi trường

2. Is cycling popular in your country?

Not really. In the past, cycling used to be the prevalent means of transport as compared to others. But, nowadays, this mode of transport is superseded by motorbikes as travelling by motorbike is more convenient and saves more energy for commuters.

  • prevalent /ˈprev.əl.ənt/ (adj) : phổ biến
  • supersede something /ˌsuː.pəˈsiːd/ (verb) : thay thế

3. Would you ride bikes to work in the future?

I think I wouldn’t cycle to work in the future because of several reasons. First of all, cycling means that I have to expose myself to unpredictable weather and to air pollution. Besides, main streets are too dangerous for cyclists, since cars, motorbikes, and buses usually travel at a very high speed. Hence, I would opt to go on a motorbike or a bus instead.

  • expose yourself to something /ɪkˈspəʊz/ (verb) : tiếp xúc bạn với cái gì

4. Is it easy for you to ride a bicycle in your country?

5. is it safe to ride bicycles on the roads.

cycling essay for ielts

Describe a trip you took by bike

You should say:

  • when and where the trip was
  • who you went with
  • And explain how you felt about it.

1. Why do few people travel by bike?

I think there are several clear reasons why bikes are not prevalent for people to get around . Firstly, travelling by bike is more physically demanding than other modes of transport like motorbikes or cars, especially on a hot day. Secondly, it takes a much longer time for people to cycle to work or school, so it’s not their preferred choice.

  • get around (phrasal verb) : đi lại

2. What actions should be taken to encourage more people to cycle?
