Koh wants students to achieve their full potential; teaching to him is engaging, inspirational, and transparent. He wants readers to know that being a teacher is rewarding yet difficult, and is something he holds close to his heart.

“‘I work until midnight each night trying to lock and load all my links, lessons, etc. I never get ahead,” one anonymous educator wrote. ‘Emails, endless email. Parents blaming me because their kids chose to stay in bed, on phones, on video games instead of doing work.’”

Singer writes about the difficult life of teachers trying to balance in-person and distance learning during the COVID-19 pandemic. On top of the standard class routine, being a teacher during the pandemic has entailed the burden of handling students who opt for remote learning. They are faced with additional struggles, including connection issues, complaining parents, and being overworked in general- it’s as if they teach twice the number of classes as normal. This is exhausting and may prove detrimental to the American education system, according to the sources Singer cites. 

“What it means to me is that I am checking (or acknowledging) my privilege as a teacher in the space of the classroom and in order to facilitate a more equitable classroom community for my students, erasing one of the pillars of that inequity is a step in the right direction. I am comfortable in my role as the head member in my classroom, and I don’t need a teacher’s desk anymore to signify that.”

Morris, an educator, writes about what teaching means to him, highlighted by his decision to remove his teacher’s desk from his classroom. Being a teacher for him is about leading the discussion or being the “lead learner,” as he puts it, rather than being an instructor. His removal of the teacher’s desk was decided upon based on his desire to help his students feel more equal and at home in class. He believes that being a teacher means being able to foster authentic connections both for and with his students.

“Teachers want to help all students achieve, and the feeling of leaving any student behind is devastating. The pressure that they put on themselves to ensure that they serve all students can also contribute to the stress.”

Gomez writes about the stress that comes with being a teacher, largely due to time constraints, lack of resources, and the number of students they must instruct. As much as they want to help their students, their environment does not allow them to touch the lives of all students equally. They are extremely pressured to uphold certain standards of work, and while they try as hard as they can, they do not always succeed. As a result, many teachers have left the profession altogether. Gomez ends her piece with an invitation for teachers to read about other job opportunities. 

“Then I re-evaluate what I want for myself, and what it is that keeps me working towards my dreams. Through the goals I’ve set for myself, I can maintain focus, move past my self-doubt and succeed. By focusing on my goals, I can make a difference in the world directly around me.”

She was previously able to work as a teaching assistant to her former elementary school teacher, and enjoyed imparting new knowledge unto children. A teacher shares academic knowledge, ethical values and assimilates moral values that help us shape our personality as better human beings. They represent an open book and try to share their life experience for a better tomorrow. A teacher has many qualities, they are efficient in their student’s life and success in every aspect. A teacher is very intelligent. They know how the mind of students gets concentrated in studies.

 During teaching, a teacher uses creativity so that students can concentrate on their studies. They are a repository of knowledge and have the patience and confidence to take responsibility for the future of the student. They only want to see their students successful and happy. Teachers are very prestigious people in the society, who through their magic of education, take the responsibilities of raising the lifestyle and mind level of the common people.

Teachers teach their students how to respect elders. They tell their students the difference between respect and insult and many more. A teacher equips his/her student with the knowledge, skills, and positive behavior honored which the student never feels lost. The teacher makes them aware of how to use time and the restriction of time. A good teacher makes a good impression on his students. When any student makes a mistake, the teacher teaches them a lesson and also makes them realize their mistake. They teach us to wear clean clothes, eat healthy food, stay away from the wrong food, take care of parents, treat others well, and help us in understanding the importance of completing work.

My parents were not able to do anything. They called for her to make me feel better. My teacher travelled a few miles across the city and reached the hospital. She, then, said that she would never forget any of her students and asked me to write to her. I started writing to her every week from then on and she replied to every letter of mine. Till date, I look at my teacher as my second mother and she guides me in all my difficult situations.

My favorite subject is English and my most favorite teacher is Chitra Ma’am. She teaches us English. She likes me a lot and appreciates my hard work. She joined our school one year ago. Before that, I was not so good at English. But after attending her classes, we have all become much better at this subject.

I like her for many reasons. First of all, she teaches the lessons in a very interesting way. Even when we have doubts or questions, she never gets upset with us. Her best quality is her loving nature. She would come to school daily without missing a day.

Her dressing sense is nice. She wears simple salwar suits. She always speaks to her students softly and respectfully. I eagerly wait for her class and do my English homework on time. Chitra Ma’am puts a lot of effort in explaining every chapter.

There are many activities given at the end of every lesson and she makes us participate in all of them. Not only that, but she also encourages us to take part in drama and poem competitions. Since her first day, she made a rule for us.

All of us has to speak in English during the English period. Every student tries to talk in English even if the sentence sounds improper. She has taught us to never laugh at each other’s mistakes. This has improved our spoken English in a great way. Now, we are able to talk in English with more confidence.

Another great quality of hers is that she treats every child equally. After explaining the lesson to us, she asks each one of us different questions about the chapter. Sometimes, we also love to talk about our personal lives, like what do we like about our lives, how our parents work hard for us, and things like that.

When we get confused or need an emotional support, she is the best person to talk to. Her advice and suggestions are always positive. Last month, on teacher’s day, all the students wished her and brought presents for her. We also sang a song to her.

I made a beautiful greeting card for her and a red rose with it. She accepted it with a smile and thanked us for everything. I feel grateful to have such a gentle and great teacher in my life who supports me in every way.

I have several teachers now that I am in high school but there is only one whom I can relate to as “the teacher” because of the impact he has made in my life. The teacher is male, of Indian origin and has a funny accent when he speaks. He is married and has three children. Actually, one of his children is my age and I know him through tennis practice because he comes to train with us sometimes. I like him because his sense of humor gives a good learning experience for the students. He is a math teacher and he is very good at what he does. Students tend to make fun of him because of his accent but he make fun of it himself, which gets even funnier. This teacher has been a great mentor to me and other student ever since we joined high school. I met him on a personal level one day after class when I needed clarification on a topic I had not quite understood. The teacher was kind to me and guided me through it. Since then, he took his own initiative to do follow-ups on me and I became really good in math due to his efforts.

Coincidentally, he also coaches my tennis team and we meet out on the field. We have won several awards as a tennis team under him. I feel connected to the teacher through his mentorship and he has become like a school parent to me because whenever I have an issue, he is free to help me out.

Mentorship goes along way depending on the approach used. When I first joined high school, I did not have much confidence in myself. This teacher mentored me and made me believe in myself. He has also been a role model to me through his way of doing things. He is dedicated to his work and he is an achiever. New method teachers: the tutors under this model are student-oriented. They are more concerned about their learners and their various levels of understanding. They accept and promote contributions in class unlike the old method teachers. New method teachers encourage the inquisitiveness of their students.

Personally, I see my teacher as a mini-god because he leaves his mark on me. He influences my life in ways that enables me affect changes wherever I find myself.

He is a perfect example of the new model teachers. Basically, he is student-oriented. In the classroom, he employs the Eclectic mode of teaching (this is the combination of all the modes of teaching “discussion mode, play way mode, role play mode, question mode” so as to facilitate standard learning).

He comes into the classroom; starts the lecture with a recap of what was discussed in the previous class, gives room for the students to ask questions that arose from the last class, answers them and then starts a new topic.

To start a new topic, he starts with a mind-capturing introduction that attracts the attention of all students. Once he is through with introducing the topic, he gauges our reaction in order for him to know if his students are on the same page with him or left behind.

Then, he moves on to the discussion mode of teaching, whereby he throws questions to his students and accommodates both relevant and irrelevant answers, at the end of this model, he sieves through the answers provided, pick the relevant ones and add his own iota to it, he also always applaud the courage of all who answers his questions.

He moves either into the role play method or the play way method, here he selects students to either act out the lessons from the day’s topic or summarizes what he has taught for the day. The use of this particular mode enlightens the students more on the topic being discussed.

Finally, he moves over to the questions and revision mode, where he personally go through all he has taught over the course of the period. During this mode, he entertains questions from students on their personal areas of difficulties. Occasionally, he gives assignments to back up his teachings.

During his teachings, he pays close attention to the expression, mood, sitting posture and carriage of his students. This tells him when his students are lost, sad, worried, hungry, sick, away in dream land or simply tired.

Once he is done processing the information gotten from our faces, he either finds a way of brightening the mood of his students, bringing them back from the dream world, or ending his class without breaking his stride or alerting the whole population of students to what is currently going on.

It is only normal for a human being to reflect his mood whenever he is talking or interacting, but my teacher hardly ever allow his bad, horrible moods interfere with his teachings.

Outside the classroom, my teacher is approachable, fatherly, and jovial. He entertains all and no one is excluded from his open arms, smiles and affections.

He is a good counselor who is always ready to help me out of my tight corners. He gives twenty first century advises in a fatherly way.

Although, due to my teachers lenient ways with students, some students tend to be lazy, disrespectful, stubborn or rude. He has a way of being firm, maintaining class control while teaching.

In conclusion, my teacher has all the attributes and more of a new method teachers. He is capable of combining all modes of teaching, he is compassionate, passionate, and friendly. From my interactions with him, I can confidently say that he is one of the best teachers around.

Ms Kirti was my class educator as well and took participation in the daily activities with us as well. She was a strict instructor anyway extremely amusing and mind in nature. At the same time, she was extremely restrained and dependable. She did her work perfectly with the class at a perfect time without getting late. I liked her, particularly as she attempted simple approaches to show us beneficial things. We made the most of her class. She taught us English subject as well. She even made us giggle by telling heaps of jokes in the middle of when she taught. They may also be aware of teachers’ long hours and difficult working conditions. With this, teachers’ living conditions are dictated by their salaries. Many teachers choose to live in areas with a low cost of living as it allows them to stretch their salary further and make ends meet. Teachers in low-income neighborhoods often have the added benefit of providing access to resources such as libraries, parks, and community centers. A low-cost residence often provides access to public transportation, which can be especially helpful for those who lack a car or need to travel to their job; this, in the term, helps the teachers save on cost and time. Another advantage is that it may be more secure for the teachers living in a low-income area than other locations, as there may be less crime and better community watch programs. It is not by will that teachers opt to live in low residential areas, but all these results from their low wages. Sometimes under critical conditions, the teachers are forced to evacuate from their rental areas due to their inability to afford the rentals. Evacuation of the teachers from their residential area due to the inability to pay rent is quite a disadvantage as it inconveniences the teachers in terms of salary management and looking for another better place.

The decisions/branches that explain that teacher’s social location and the barriers associated with poverty are evident in larger patterns. They include; Geographic Location of the Teacher: The geographic location of a teacher can have a major impact on their living conditions. For example, research has found that teachers who live in rural or low-income areas are more likely to experience poverty-related barriers, such as inadequate housing, lack of access to health care, and limited economic opportunities (Gudmundsdottir et al., 2018). Another case is the teacher’s Social Location. Teachers generally occupy a lower social class position, which can be seen through their lower salaries and living conditions. This can be evidenced by the fact that, according to the National Center for Education Statistics, the median salary for a teacher in the United States is $58,950 (2019). This amount is significantly lower than the national median salary of $60,293 for all occupations (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2019). Moreover, teachers often live-in areas of urban poverty due to the lower wages, which can contribute to the poor living conditions

A teacher’s education level can also play a role in their living conditions. Studies have found that teachers with higher levels of education are more likely to have access to better job opportunities, higher salaries, and more job security, which can help them to afford better housing, healthcare, and other necessities (Gudmundsdottir et al., 2018).

Access to resources can also affect the living conditions of teachers. Research has found that teachers in low-income areas often lack access to basic resources, such as health care, housing, and transportation, making it difficult for them to afford necessities (Howard et al., 2019). Additionally, teachers in low-income areas may not have access to the same educational resources as those in higher-income areas, making it difficult for them to provide quality education to their students (Gudmundsdottir et al., 2018).

When eviction occurs in rental houses, for instance, by the teacher, the following is a full linear story of finding a rental property or trying to keep it, including the following steps. Finding a Rental Property: The first step in finding a rental property is to decide where you want to live. Consider things such as commute times, schools, and local amenities. Once you have narrowed your choices, start researching rental properties in those areas. Look online for listings, check with real estate agents, and ask friends and family for referrals. Once you have found a few potential rental properties, contact the landlord or property manager to arrange a viewing. Make sure to be prepared with questions and to take notes during the showing. When deciding on a rental property, consider factors such as size, layout, condition, and features. Pay attention to the rental agreement and any additional fees or charges that may apply. Ask questions and ensure that one understands everything before signing the agreement.

Keeping the Rental Property: Once you have signed the rental agreement, it is important to focus on keeping the property for the duration of the lease. Start by complying with the terms of the agreement, such as paying rent on time and taking care of the property. Be sure to keep up with maintenance and repair any damaged items as soon as possible.

Signing the lease: one has to sign a lease agreement to rent the property officially. The tenants then read the agreement carefully and signed it.

Moving In: when one moves into the property and they are happy with it. They begin to settle in and make the property now their own.

Keeping Up with Payments: one sets up an automatic payment system to ensure he stays on top of his monthly rent payments.

Maintaining the property: this is done to take care of the property and ensure it is in good condition. One should repair any damages and does regular maintenance.

Staying on Good Terms with the Landlord: Makes sure he is courteous and respectful to the landlord to maintain a good relationship with them. Another process is Renewing the Lease: When the lease ends, the tenant should always renew it so that he can continue to stay in the property.

After the due process is done, moving out is now considered. When one wants to move out of the rental property, then his landlord gives the proper notice and moves out.

The social process and structures that shape poverty and eviction significantly impact teachers and their choices regarding housing and employment. Youths are the future of the nation, who are responsible for carrying out vital duties across several domains and serving society this way or another. What influences them to do something great in life? Besides parents, whose credit is it when the youth today grow up to be beautiful human beings tomorrow? It is the teacher!

Teachers are builders of a better tomorrow. They shape the youths today and help them achieve something great in life. What does it take to be a good teacher? What are the essential qualities he possesses that are enough to influence the students? What impact is he/she capable of putting on a student’s life?

First of all, we need to know who is a teacher. In general, the definition of teacher goes like, a person who teaches pupils in schools, colleges, or private and imparts knowledge on specific subjects, checks the homework, and provides feedback.

It was my English teacher who used to teach us in such a wonderful way, that I started loving literature and decided to make my carrier in this stream. He always encouraged my writing skills and helped me out to make them perfect. Today I am really thankful that he was my teacher.

Life is all about learning till the last breath and the person who has knowledge can be a good teacher. It needs lots of courage and knowledge to teach and be in this profession. When a teacher is in a class, he has to handle more than thirty students at once and all from different background and interest.

This Is the Surprising Career Stage When Teachers Are Unhappiest

Call it a seven-year itch: After a couple of years in the classroom, teachers’ morale slumps for a few years before rebounding later in their careers.

While multiple national surveys show that teacher morale overall is low , the breakdowns by experience level reveal an inverse bell curve of job satisfaction. There’s no clear answer as to why, but the general theory goes like this: Teachers start their careers feeling relatively optimistic and excited. But a few years in, they start to feel disillusioned with the demands of teaching and the stagnant wages compared to peers in other industries.

“The first five years, [teachers are] just figuring it out. This is their calling, this is what they went to school for—they’re pushing through,” said Michelle Faust, an elementary literacy coach in Lexington, S.C. “When it doesn’t get easier in years five to 10, and sometimes it gets harder, it’s like, what in the world?”

As teachers gain more experience, move up in the salary schedule, and learn how to better manage their workloads, the data show their job satisfaction improves—if they haven’t left the profession yet.

With the more experienced, more satisfied teachers, “you’ve got the folks who have figured it out, and who’ve chosen to stay, and who have found their lane and their purpose,” said Mayme Hostetter, the president of Relay Graduate School of Education, a not-for-profit preparation program. “They’re doing what they want to be doing.”

The challenge for school leaders, she said, is maintaining teachers’ morale after the initial optimism and excitement fade, so they can reach that more stable phase of their careers.

What the data show

The EdWeek State of Teaching survey, which polled a nationally representative sample of nearly 1,500 teachers in October 2023, found that teachers with three to nine years of classroom experience have worse morale than their peers who have either more or less experience. They are also less likely than teachers in other stages of their careers to say they’d recommend their own children, or those of a loved one, pursue a career in teaching.

Federal data from the National Assessment of Educational Progress show a similar trend. When 4th and 8th grade math teachers were asked how much the statement, “I am satisfied with being a teacher at this school,” applies to them, the breakdown differed based on years of experience. This was the case among 4th grade reading teachers, too. (There wasn’t a high enough response rate for 8th grade reading teachers to make the same determination.)

Among 8th grade math teachers, for instance, 80 percent of newbies (those who had been on the job for less than a year) and 77 percent of seasoned veterans (those who had been teaching for 21 or more years) said being satisfied at their school sounded “exactly” or “quite a bit” like them—compared to 69 percent of teachers with three to five years of experience and 71 percent of teachers who’ve been in the classroom six to 10 years.

The COVID-19 factor

This phenomenon might be heightened by the extenuating circumstances of the past four years. Teachers experiencing that morale slump now were new or relatively new to the classroom at the height of the pandemic.

“They went through this period of extraordinary difficulty and uncertainty during COVID and anticipated that it would get better, and there would be relief,” said Doris Santoro, a professor of education at Bowdoin College who studies teacher morale. “Now COVID is over, we’re back to normal, and things should feel good. But ... it’s not easier for anybody right now.”

Students need extra help catching up on academic ground lost during the pandemic, and teachers are also contending with a reported rise in bad behavior and classroom distractions .

Yet teachers who are a few years into their career might not be fully equipped to tackle those challenges, Santoro said.

“If those zero to three years [in the classroom] were the COVID years, then they may be really experiencing a gap in skills and maybe never established the kinds of supports and professional networks that we know are necessary,” she said.

Layla Treuhaft-Ali, a middle school teacher in Chicago who is in her fifth year in the classroom, agreed: “I still consider myself a new teacher because I lost a year of practical experience during COVID—there were a lot of experiences I didn’t have,” she said.

Salary, workload may play a role

But there are evergreen factors behind this early-to-mid-career morale slump, too. For instance, teachers, on average, make less than similarly educated workers in other fields.

“I just compare myself sometimes to my friends who can take [paid time off] anytime they want, ... and they’re making twice as much as me,” Faust said, adding that the discrepancy is heightened for teachers when they’re in the early stages of their careers.

Also, teaching is “a flat career trajectory, so you don’t see that boost—not only in compensation, but in recognition,” Santoro said. “You’re not getting the, ‘Oh, you just made associate from junior [associate].’ ... There are no such things at most places as promotions, especially if you want to stay in the classroom.”

And while more experienced teachers may be looking ahead toward retirement, “people in that three- to nine-year range, they don’t see the end in sight,” Faust said.

Another factor: Teachers’ workloads are heavy , and that doesn’t always change with more experience. In fact, teachers with a few years of teaching under their belts may add to their own workloads by creating more ambitious lesson plans or taking on additional school roles.

“In the first couple years, you’re observing what other teachers are doing, then you try to implement [those things] yourselves,” said Miranda Mack, a high school physics teacher in Dallas who’s in her fifth year in the classroom. “Sometimes you overdo it. ... Teachers at that point can start to feel a sense of burnout.”

Meanwhile, she added, “Older teachers have figured out their boundaries.”

The gap between professional ideals and systemic challenges

Teachers with a few years of experience have formed a professional identity and corresponding ideals, but they often feel stymied by factors outside of their control, teachers and experts said.

“At the three-year mark, you start to feel pressure from what you have noticed about various policy issues,” Mack said. “You see the systemic issues going on, and you feel helpless to change them.”

Said Santoro: “It might be a moment where some teachers have the recognition of, ‘It’s not me, it’s you.’”

For instance, staffing shortages and inadequate resources might make it hard for teachers to do their jobs in the way that they’d like. And school leadership is a major factor in teachers’ sense of self-efficacy, Santoro said.

"[T]he commitment, hope, and optimism with which many teachers still enter the profession, unless supported within the school, may be eroded over time as managing combinations of low-level disruption from those who don’t wish to learn or cannot, or interfere with others’ opportunities to learn; increasing media criticisms; and lack of work-life balance take their toll on professional well-being,” wrote Christopher Day, a professor of education at the University of Nottingham in England, in a 2012 paper about teachers’ professional lives.

Day’s work builds on the research of Michael Huberman, who was a professor of education at the University of Geneva in Switzerland. In the 1970s and 1980s, Huberman charted out the phases of a teaching career, based on interviews with Swiss teachers with various levels of experience.

He found that after the first few years in the classroom, teachers begin to stabilize, finding their professional footing and committing to teaching for the long haul. But younger teachers can also experience a career crisis at this point, stemming from boredom, doubts about whether they made the right career choice, and workplace challenges.

Strong school leadership can help teachers be resilient and maintain a sense of purpose and well-being, Day wrote.

How can schools support teachers experiencing a slump in morale?

Experts said school leaders tend to focus a lot of their attention on brand-new teachers , which is important—but teachers still need support a few years in.

Facilitating a sense of connection and community among the teachers at the school is important, as is targeted professional development, Hostetter said. Teachers need to feel like they’re successful, she added.

“Competence breeds confidence breeds morale and enthusiasm that carries you through the honeymoon years at the start of the profession,” she said.

Treuhaft-Ali, the fifth-year teacher, said she wants administrators to give her grace as she continues to hone her craft.

Teaching is “an incredibly complex profession, and I love that it requires me to be good at a lot of different things, ... but it is impossible that every area is going to be your strength,” she said. “While you work to build that up, it can be so discouraging.”

25 Years Of Healing: How Six Columbine Survivors Found Life After Trauma

From EMDR therapy to “sad-mom playlists,” these women have found a path through the darkness.

It was nearing the end of spring term. The seniors had just gone to prom. Students were busy preparing for final exams and the long summer break. They walked through the halls of their beloved school, absorbed in all the usual joys and concerns that come with the ending of the school year. Then, suddenly, their lives changed forever.

Twenty-five years ago, on April 20, 1999, two gunmen shot and killed 12 students and a teacher at a high school in Littleton, Colorado. Twenty-four other students were physically injured during the attack at Columbine High School, but the invisible wounds inflicted on the entire school community—and their families—defy measurement.

But the effects did not extend only to those on the scene. The number of people affected by a mass shooting is “astronomical,” says Jillian Peterson, PhD, a forensic psychologist and executive director of the Violence Prevention Project Research Center, a nonpartisan, nonprofit gun-violence research center. In communities where a shooting took place, “you see higher levels of PTSD or acute stress reactions in people who weren't on the scene—who just identify with that community,” she says. “It’s shocking, the number of people impacted. And in many ways, we’re all impacted. When you have events like Columbine, they hit us on a national level.”

Trauma doesn’t remain within geographical boundaries either—it can trace along identity-group lines that extend far beyond the incident’s location, says Abigail Hurst, director of Trauma-Informed Programs at Everytown for Gun Safety . For example: The 2016 Pulse Nightclub shooting in Orlando had ripple effects across the broader LGBTQ community, and the El Paso Walmart shooting in 2019 had a similar impact on Latinx people, she says.

Additionally, mass shootings like Columbine end up getting replayed in the 24-hour news cycle, which seems to have a different traumatic effect, though more research into that is needed. “Columbine had such a profound impact. It hit right when 24/7 cable news was taking off, so the coverage was just constant,” Peterson says.

Survivors’ mental and emotional responses in the wake of gun violence vary significantly from person to person. But in the immediate aftermath, one in three survivors lives in fear and feels unsafe, a 2023 research report from Everytown for Gun Safety found. They also experience things like hypervigilance, numbness, paranoia, anxiety , and depression , says Hurst. Sometimes, those responses can last for decades. “It is very hard for people to truly understand the depth and the breadth of how trauma from gun violence can change [a person],” Hurst says.

Two and a half decades have passed since that spring morning in Colorado, but many people are still battling the aftereffects. Therapy, advocacy, loved ones, support groups, and sometimes medication have all helped with healing. As survivor after survivor told Women’s Health , the pain never goes away, but you adapt. You learn to live a full, joyful life with that pain.

It’s important to note that therapy and trauma counseling looked a lot different in the late nineties and early aughts as well. There was more stigma, fewer resources for survivors. So, for the six women here, the years immediately following the shooting were focused mostly on putting one foot in front of the other, trying to convince themselves, “I’m fine. I’m okay.” Healing—which is a continuous journey, they all say—came later. (Two of the women sought out mental health treatment only after becoming parents.)

“We’ve gotten, in some ways, much more comfortable in the last 25 years talking about mental health, talking about trauma, reducing the stigma around it,” says Peterson. “There’s a lot more awareness. A lot more language about it.”

Each woman here has dedicated her life to service to others—whether through helping young people, supporting other survivors, caring for children with special needs, or advocating for change at a national level. A few became teachers. One became a therapist. All have committed to sharing their stories, whether through public speeches or interviews, in hopes that they can educate people and be a resource to those who might be struggling. Every single one of them says that turning their pain into power—through advocacy work, public speaking, and connecting with survivors—has been one of the strongest therapies they’ve found for their trauma.

“Sometimes, survivors can also be the ones who can push us forward,” Peterson says.

Amy Over was a senior at Columbine when she hid under a cafeteria table and was able to safely evacuate with other students thanks to her basketball and track coach, Dave Sanders. She now works as a paraeducator for children with special needs and founded Survivor’s Path, which brings speeches about trauma recovery and mental health to audiences across the country. Her own kids are graduating from high school this year and will be heading to their senior prom this spring.

At 43, I feel like I’ve really come into my own. I was telling my husband recently that I feel really happy in my life right now. I feel strong, physically, and I’m taking care of my mental health. I feel at peace and grounded. I also feel like I found a new purpose, working with special needs kiddos as a paraeducator. It’s a physically demanding job, but I enjoy it, and it’s good for me to always be moving.

Last week I did my first lockdown drill at school. That was very, very triggering for me. My boss was with me, and she was holding my hand, telling me, “Everything is going to be okay—you’ve got this.” But I came home and I was emotionally and physically exhausted.

The shooting was a few days after my senior prom, so there’s the “pre- Amy” and the “after Columbine Amy.” I was in the cafeteria under a table. My basketball and track coach essentially saved my life—and thousands of other lives—because he told us when to run for the doors.

In the immediate aftermath, it was just so overwhelming. I didn’t know what to do. That June, my mom scheduled a couple of therapy sessions, because we got a few for free. I lost my ever-loving mind with one of the counselors. She had started asking me really triggering questions about the shooting, and I wasn’t in a place to answer them. I became so enraged that I snapped—and ended up throwing a vase at her. I had so much anger. And from there, I kind of just coped with alcohol and partying.

PTSD creeps and seeps in years later. Mine appeared when I became a parent. I met my husband at 19. We got married at 21, and I had my daughter, Brie, at 24. I was a young mom trying to send my daughter to preschool and I was just like, “how is she going to be safe?” It wasn’t about me anymore—it was about keeping my kids safe, and mass shootings just kept happening. I remember when Sandy Hook happened, my son was a baby and my daughter was in first grade. I was on a trip with my husband in New York City. We were in Times Square, and I fell to my knees when I saw on the big screen what had happened. I called my nanny: “Where’s Brie? Where’s Masen?” I just panicked.

I started feeling like I was having a heart attack every day, and I began having night terrors. I wasn’t sleeping. I was just in a really bad cycle. And it wasn’t until then that I decided, “hey, I need help. I’m drowning.”

My husband helped me get on medication and found this amazing therapist—a Columbine teacher and counselor from back in the day. He knew my coach and all my peers. He was also on the forefront of EMDR therapy [eye movement desensitization and reprocessing, which is supposed to help reprocess traumatic memories ]. I’m proud to say that I haven’t had a panic attack in years.

These days, I have tools in my toolbox that help me. I still do check-ins with a new therapist once a month. I make sure I sleep enough and drink enough water—that I’m taking care of my basic needs. And I also exercise every day—it’s just part of my mental health [routine]. I kickbox, I run, I do races and challenges and goat yoga. I hike and fish. I walk around my neighborhood. I still box and train with a pro boxer. It empowers me. That anger is still there, and this is a safe way for me to take out my sadness and anxiety. It’s just fun and keeps my mind active.

My kids are graduating from high school this spring, and I’m just beyond proud of them. I’m really looking forward to celebrating. But [this time] has also been challenging: My kids will be going to their senior prom soon, and that was the last time I was “normal Amy”—at my senior prom 25 years ago. It was such a magical time in my life. And Columbine was such an amazing school. So that’s going to be tough. The shooting is something that I’m not over—I’m over coming . I’m still getting through this.

I tell my story not to make people sad, but to give them hope. I talk about Columbine because I want to talk about how I got through the nitty-gritty parts, and how I’m going to continue to take care of myself and others around me.

Heather Martin Egeland

Heather turned 18 two days after the mass shooting at Columbine. After the Aurora theater shooting in 2012, Heather and another Columbine survivor, Jennifer Hammer, cofounded The Rebels Project, a nonpartisan nonprofit organization named for the Columbine High School mascot, which helps survivors of mass shootings connect and find services. Heather is still the executive director and also a high school English teacher and the yearbook advisor.

The year mark—and the days leading up to it—are always weird. They’re always funky and difficult in different, sometimes unexpected, ways. And major moments in my healing journey—which has centered on peer support, advocacy, and starting trauma therapy—are also very closely tied to the big round-number year marks.

Ten years after the shooting at Columbine, I realized I wanted to become a teacher. That’s where I belonged. That was the space for me. And I don’t know if I would have become the teacher I am today if not for the events of April 20, 1999. I think I’m a better teacher because of my recovery journey.

I struggled so badly in college that I just eventually failed out. I started working in the restaurant business, but at the 10-year mark, I reconnected with all my classmates, and I decided to step down from my restaurant management role and go back to school. I finished my bachelor’s degree and got my teaching license.

While filming a documentary, [the crew] wanted to film some B-roll and asked if I would flip through my old yearbook. I hadn’t looked at it in years, and as I was flipping through, I saw that my high school English teacher had written, “I hope you major in English and become a teacher. Your students would love you.” I had apparently told my English teacher that I wanted to be a teacher, but I had totally forgotten because, well, trauma. We had graduated about a month after the shooting and, as seniors, never went back to that school.

It also took me 10 years to recognize and own the title of “survivor.” I was physically uninjured, and I wasn’t in the library. I really minimized my trauma and my experience. I was always making excuses to myself about why I shouldn’t be traumatized—because so many others had it worse, had experienced and seen worse. I felt like my trauma was not bad enough to warrant what I was feeling inside and the nightmares I was having. But at the 10-year mark, I was invited back to the school and finally got together with the Class of 1999, and I found out that I wasn’t alone in my struggles. What I was feeling was totally normal, and that peer support was a game changer for me.

I’d tried therapy one year after the shooting. Looking back, I’m really proud of my sweet little 19-year-old self, because I knew something wasn’t right. Fascinatingly, though, I didn’t think it was because of the shooting. “It’s been a whole year,” I’d tell myself—and that’s horrifying that I thought that and was putting that kind of pressure on myself. I thought it was because I was in college, dealing with whatever college kids dealt with. But I was dropping out of classes, and I knew something was wrong.

Thirteen years after the shooting, we started The Rebels Project. Another classmate and survivor, Jennifer Hammer, texted me a day after the Aurora theater shooting in 2012: “What do you think about starting a support group for survivors of mass shootings?” And I told her, “I’m in.” Two days later, we had an online platform up and running. We were desperate to help because when these events happen, it really amplifies the helplessness that I felt the day of the shooting. It’s very triggering and brings about really big emotions. This was a way that we could help, that we could give back.

Now, people find out about The Rebels Project through word of mouth—we’ve been around a long time, we’re established, and we’re trusted. And if Columbine is any indicator, we know our services are, unfortunately, going to be needed at least 25 years down the road.

At the 20-year mark, I finally started trauma therapy—like actual trauma therapy, where I did EMDR and brainspotting [therapy using spots in a person’s visual field to help them process trauma]. I had been on a planning committee for the 20-year mark and was connecting for the first time with victims’ families—and I found that I was not okay. So, I went to trauma therapy pretty extensively for about a year and a half, and now I go back a couple times a year—typically in March and April, when the year mark is approaching.

I think this year mark is going to be difficult. I say that out loud right now, knowing that next week, I’ll have a meltdown about something and I won’t know why until my husband says, “It’s April.” And I’ll say, “Oh, yeah.” I can still sometimes feel angry when I’m triggered, similar to my feelings in the months after the shooting. But now I recognize it for what it is and have learned that I don’t need to—nor should I—watch coverage of new [shooting] events. My bounce-back time is much shorter.

I would go back in half a heartbeat and change the events of that day if I could. I am also extremely proud of the person I am today, and that probably is because of how I reacted and grew in the aftermath. It took—and is still taking—time, but 25 years out, I’m just so much better and have overcome a lot.

It’s important that other survivors know that trauma is not a competition. It’s not about who suffered more and who struggled more and who experienced more. Your experience and your story are valid and real. Your trauma matters, and your experience matters, and you matter. It’s okay to cry. It’s okay to be sad. It’s okay to still be impacted. I am of course still impacted 25 years later, but it definitely gets better.

Missy Mendo

Fourteen-year-old Missy Mendo was in math class at Columbine when she heard the shooting start. She and her classmates evacuated to a park across the street where the perpetrators began shooting at them. After immediately relocating to the East Coast after high school, Missy eventually headed back to Colorado. These days, Missy works for the state of Colorado in the department of regulatory agencies and is director of community outreach for The Rebels Project.

I heard this saying once: “You never know that your experience could become somebody else’s playbook.” And these days, the ability to help someone else who may be going through something similar to what I’ve gone through—especially another mom—makes me feel strong and empowered. Talking to other survivors has helped me significantly. I say this all the time: A hug from another survivor is totally different than a hug from somebody trying to console you. It’s an unwritten understanding. They get it.

When The Rebels Project first started after the Aurora theater shooting in 2012, I couldn’t get involved because I was living on the East Coast. But I ended up moving back to Colorado, and I showed up to a silent auction the group was holding. By the end of the night, I had accepted a job as their assistant director of fundraising. It was at that point that I started to really get to know other communities of survivors—helping them connect. Now, I’ve been director of community outreach for almost six years.

Twenty-five years ago, mental health wasn’t exactly a thing. The county offered us six free therapy sessions [after the shooting], but it’s not like you could pick and choose therapists. I got a marriage and family therapist who was much older, and she and I didn’t jive very well. We weren’t a good match. At the end, I just thought, Okay, I did my six weeks, I’m okay , and then spent the next 20 years with no therapy whatsoever. No support groups, no therapy, nothing—just figuring it out on my own.

After the shooting, my sleep pattern immediately changed—I wasn’t sleeping. My brain wouldn’t shut off. I got in the habit of sleeping with the television on because it helped with the silence in my head. The news outlets kept repeating everything [about the shooting], so I started watching ESPN. I ran cross country and played soccer, and sports was the one thing that didn’t talk about what was going on in my life.

One of the hardest things to understand is that I have an unseen injury. When I read The Body Keeps the Score [by Bessel Van Der Kolk, MD], I had to put the book down because it showed scans of what your brain looks like with anxiety, during a panic attack, and when you’re distressed. For the first time, I could physically see my injury—it was nonexistent until that point. The processing that took place in the days after, before I could continue to read the book, was just hard. I am getting goosebumps talking about it now.

When I started working for The Rebels Project, I put so much pressure on myself to say the right things to these communities, to do the right thing and make the right suggestions. I was afraid any mistake would set them back emotionally or retraumatize them. And I realized: If I’m seeing the same things in myself that these other people are going through, and they’re in therapy… I don’t want to project this onto my child; I want to set her up for success in this world as much as I possibly can. And I’ve been in therapy now for over four years.

The toughest connections I make are with other parents who say, “My kid just went through this. They have to go back to school, but we’re having a really hard time. I don’t know what to do.” It’s the hardest [question] to answer because how do I tell a mom that I’m 25 years out and I’m still struggling? How do you tell them there’s no quick fix to this? You can’t tell them that there’s going to be severe challenges their entire life, and you can’t tell them that everything is going to be okay. In the 25 years that I’ve been a survivor, I have never met another survivor that was like, “Yep, I’m good. No problems.”

The trajectory of my life completely changed that day at Columbine. But over the years, I’ve come to realize that I have the capability of letting somebody else know that they’re not alone in the world, and make them feel like they have a support system. I’ve noticed a change in myself: I’ve come to realize that even though you are a tiny speck on this planet, you can still make a difference.

Michelle Wheeler

Michelle Wheeler was a senior at Columbine when the shooting occurred. She was in the choir room and hid in the auditorium until she could evacuate the school. Ninety-six bullets passed her body as she fled the building. She worked for nearly two decades as a preschool teacher before becoming an instructional coach at district schools, helping preschoolers through trauma and crisis. After spending time at The Rebels Project, she now works with Survivor’s Path, speaking to audiences about trauma recovery and mental health. She is still married to her college sweetheart, who unknowingly saved her life when he asked her out on a first date.

When I work with parents of survivors, I try to have them understand that their kids are not going to be the same as they were the day before. That child is dead, I tell them, and you need to grieve the loss of the child you once had and learn to love and understand the child you have now. Because we do change. And we are angry. And we’re going to take it out on the people that we love the most, because they’re the safest. That child is going to be different in school. If they’re an athlete, they’re going to be different at their sport. They’re just going to be different. Their brain has changed, and there’s really no going back to the person they were. But there’s also so much joy and triumph in the person they will become. It takes time, and it’s a very rocky road, but you will get there.

In high school, I was the class clown. School was hard for me. I don’t know if I would have had the same life if I hadn’t gone through what I did. I think I would have been a teacher, but I don’t know that I’d have worked with the population [of kids] that I work with now. I grieved the person [I was on] April 19, 1999, many, many years ago, and have let go of who she could have been. I worked on understanding who I was after April 20, 1999—loving the awkwardness and the dark humor and the sadness and the celebrations. It took many, many years to accept who I am.

I was upstairs in the choir room when the shooting began, and hid in the auditorium for what seemed like forever—but I think it was only a couple minutes. When I exited the school, about 96 bullets passed my body. None hit me, thank God. I made it out of the school probably 10 or 15 minutes after everything started.

I was a senior at the time, and I went straight to college the next year. Now that I look back on it, I can see [my] patterns of destruction. I was drinking alcohol. I had a lot of anger issues. I liked the thrill of trying to get away with things and made poor decisions that could have put me in danger, because I felt this invincibility—like, this [mass shooting] happened, I can survive anything. But when we had our first fire drill in college, I hit the ground. I panicked. And I remember thinking, This is really weird. There’s something wrong with my heart .

It wasn’t until my third year [of college] that I hit rock bottom. I was—unconsciously, but consciously—saving medication to kill myself. I just didn’t have any feeling in my body; I felt numb. Nothing excited me. I thought, Well, if this is life, this isn’t worth living . I had a plan. But the night I chose to do it, my now husband asked me out on our first date, and I finally felt something different. (We kept going out on dates, and have now been married for 20 years.)

That was my turning point. That was my realization that I wasn’t well and that I needed help. So, I went to therapy, and have done extensive therapy since then, including four rounds of EMDR, which has helped me process the sounds and the smells and the tastes I experienced in my flashbacks. I was lucky to find my husband when I was fresh in my trauma because it meant I didn’t have to explain that I was a Columbine survivor, and that I don’t like loud sounds or blue lights. That I hate balloons and black trench coats.

But I wish I’d had family connection and support after the shooting [to help process the trauma]. I’m the baby of seven kids, and there’s a 16-year difference between me and the next oldest. And I just didn’t have that family support. I didn’t have anybody to go to the funerals with me. I didn’t have anybody I could process my trauma with. After the shooting, I went to my boyfriend’s parent’s house, then to my sister’s. And when I got to her house, my mom met me at the door with a bottle of Jack and said, “We’re never going to talk about this. If you talk about it, you’re letting the perpetrators win.” Obviously, that is horrible advice. I love my mother to death, she’s a wonderful mother, but I don’t know that she could mentally handle what I went through. I honestly think it’s a generational thing.

It wasn’t until I met my husband, and experienced that love and bond, that I realized I needed people in my corner. I needed people who love me and support me, who may not have been through what I’ve gone through, but who can sit with me on dark nights and help me through a nightmare, or walk my path with me on the day that marks the shooting every year. Someone who can understand my triggers and know when to say, “Oh, we gotta go.” I have now surrounded myself with a survivor community and created my own family that I can call when I’m in crisis. Without them, I don’t know where I’d be. I don’t even know if I’d be here.

Suicide is a scary topic, but it’s important to talk about. We lost many friends to suicide after Columbine. And now that I have come out and talked more about it these past few years, I’ve had a lot of people come up to me after panel discussions, saying, “Oh my gosh, I have felt the same way.” So, I know by talking about the hard stuff, it’s going to make a difference.

[Trauma recovery] is not an easy road. But it’s not always hard. You will find love. You will have children. (That will have its own difficulties!) But you will figure out how to manage life with your trauma. It never goes away, but you learn to live with it. You learn that some days, you can do hard things, and some days you can’t. And that’s okay.

Coni Sanders

Coni Sanders was 24 when her father, beloved Columbine teacher and coach Dave Sanders, was shot and killed while trying to lead students to safety from the school’s cafeteria. Today, she honors her father and his memory through her life’s work, helping people convicted of violent crimes “find peace and live nonviolent lives.” She still lives in Littleton, Colorado, and is expecting another grandchild this year.

I’m a forensic therapist. For almost 20 years, I’ve worked with people who have committed violent crime or related harm in their communities. Working with them is such an honor. It feels really empowering when I see so many successes—see people doing the work to change their path and live nonviolent lives. Over the years, it feels less connected to Columbine and more like, “this is where I’m meant to be.” Most of my clients don’t know my story—it’s not something I openly share because I don’t want to take the focus off of them. And while I’m pretty Google-able, [my history] is kind of my secret superpower. This is where I carry on my father’s legacy by helping the struggling to find a path.

When my dad, teacher and coach Dave Sanders, was killed at Columbine High School, I was 24 years old, working at the local phone company. I was rebellious at the time and hadn’t gone to college (even though my dad wanted me to) and feeling a bit lost in my life overall. After the shooting, it felt like I was in a dream—there’s a fog and a haze [over my memories]. It was unreal. I remember the details, but I don’t remember feeling anything.

At the time, I worked in the Denver Post building, and reporters would just stop by my workplace to talk about the shooting. I had to change jobs because I just wanted to hide, to have some semblance of normalcy. I was convinced I was fine and didn’t need therapy. Everyone kept telling me “be strong,” so I was trying to do that. I tried to be tough. I wish I understood that I didn’t have to be strong; it’s not realistic that someone could “be strong” in that situation without significant support from others.

Three years later, I was driving down the highway and “Somewhere Over the Rainbow”—the version sung by Israel “IZ” Kamakawiwoʻole—came on, and I went back into that numb state. I pulled over, got out of my car, and went and sat in a ditch. And I just cried and cried and cried. When I got back in my car, I started driving really fast. And I realized I needed help.

When you’re a secondary or tertiary victim, it can feel like you don’t belong with other survivors. But these traumatic events are a wound for the entire community. That wound is seeing the people you care about suffer, the media coverage, the terror.

Three years ago, we were cleaning out my mom’s basement and found the box of evidence. It had everything—his body bag, his bloody clothes—and we all just froze. We thought mom had the police department destroy everything. It was so horrifying, and the wounds just burst open. I went and found a therapist. “I can’t manage this,” I told them.

Twenty-five years doesn’t stop the hurt. It never stops. Even right now, my whole body will go numb, my breathing changes, and I have to remind myself that I’m okay. I do grounding techniques and try to stay in the present. I sometimes hold ice cubes to help bring me back into my body. When you suffer a trauma this deep, it’s always going to be there. I’ve been in this fight longer than most people who are surviving gun violence, but it’s a less lonely journey now because so many people have traveled this never-ending path. [After a mass shooting], you step onto this path not knowing where it’s going to go. I can tell you that you’re going to fall, you’re going to get bruised. You’re going to feel lost and numb and frustrated. But you’ll also find people along that path who have experienced the same thing, who care, who are advocating for change. There’s a wide network of supporters you can really lean on.

My daughter is about to have a baby, and my dad’s not here. He was such a wonderful grandpa, and some of my grandkids aren’t going to get to experience that. I remember when I turned the same age he was when he died, I kept thinking, Oh my gosh, he had so much more life to live . And I went numb again.

Someone left a pair of shoes at the memorial, and it says, “Coach, in these shoes, you gave me wisdom. In these shoes, you made me an athlete. In these shoes, you made me a champion. In these shoes, you made me a man. My love to you, Class of ’96.” People still come up to me to tell me my dad saved generations when he saved hundreds of kids in the cafeteria. “He saved my life, and now I have a baby,” one person told me. “And my baby will one day have a baby.”

Salli Garrigan, 16, was in the choir room when the shooting at Columbine began. Now, she has two kids—a 9-year-old daughter and 5-year-old son—and finds her strength through telling her own story. I loved high school. I was a truly normal teenager—if you want to call a choir-theater kid normal, which I do! I was excited to be part of the pom squad.

In the immediate aftermath, I felt a kind of grief amnesia. I was in a haze, and everything just felt fuzzy. When I look back, everything just kind of goes white, like a weird dream. I don’t truly remember things that happened during that time. We went through the motions: going to funerals, going to the hospital.

Our rival high school opened its doors to us, we got handmade blankets from Project Linus, the first responders made potpourri from the flowers at the memorial—and that outpouring was therapeutic. The community came together; the world was with us. [Knowing] that helped a lot. We had a “taking back our school” rally the next year. It felt good to be back, even though our library was taped off—it was still a crime scene—and we’d have to walk by that every day. But getting one last year with everyone, to sit in familiar classrooms again, was so helpful. We were able to make new memories, which was really important. Bringing our choir back together—and singing again—was great, great therapy.

Back then, I didn’t consider myself a survivor. I wasn’t physically injured, so I always thought, Okay, I’m fine . I wasn’t fine, and looking back now, I get that I had PTSD. Even though I didn’t know what I needed at the time, I was lucky because I found outlets like theater and singing with friends—outlets, like dancing, that were healthy. Onstage, I could pretend I was something I wasn’t. I was able to tell someone else’s story and not my own. I could hide. It was a wonderful escape. I ended up getting a degree in musical theater and moved to New York, where I went on tours and did a lot of regional theater. I never sought out therapy, but looking back, I should have. In the ’90s, therapy seemed like you failed, which is so silly [to think] now, but at the time, there was this weird stigma.

For a long time, I didn’t tell my story. But then the Parkland school shooting happened in 2018—it was eerily similar to what happened at the Columbine shooting—and that made me realize I needed to do something. I saw the kids calling themselves survivors, and I realized I could be a survivor. The Parkland kids weren’t trusting the adults [who were saying it would never happen again]. They were speaking out, and I had a moment of thinking, Why didn’t we speak out? At this point, my daughter had been born and I was pregnant with my son, and I was starting to realize my children are going to go to school, and they will see a whole different school day. I have a lot of guilt because lockdown drills happen because of our school. Because nothing changed after the Columbine shooting.

Around that time, I started getting involved in Moms Demand Action and the Everytown Survivor Network , and advocacy became an incredible coping mechanism. It was the first time I actually opened up, and it was very therapeutic to call myself a survivor, to share my story. I have [developed] other great coping mechanisms too: a sad-mom playlist that I listen to, or if I’m angry, I take a long walk so I don’t lash out at my family. It’s a lifelong grief—and you’ll be grieving in different ways, even 25 years later. You just don’t know how it will hit you. So, it’s okay to take a step back, feel all the feelings.

My daughter was with me when I was speaking out a lot about this [gun violence prevention] in D.C., so she has an idea of what happened. I tell her, “I'm working hard to keep the guns out of the hands of bad guys, so you can feel safe at school. You do the lockdown drills, you do all these things, and we’re working on it.” But I have moments where I give my kids extra-big hugs when I say goodbye to them. I want them to ask their own questions and feel what they want to feel. But it’s hard to ask, “How was your lockdown drill today?” I just wish it had stopped with us.

An Octopus Took My Camera, and the Images Changed the Way I See the World

I was gifted with a new way of seeing the day I got mugged underwater. I had been filming creatures living in the Great African Sea Forest off the coast of South Africa about a year ago when my camera was grabbed straight out of my hands by a young octopus thief. Wrapping her arms around her bounty, she zoomed backward across the ocean floor.

This was not the first time I’d found myself at the mercy of an eight-armed robber. A couple of years earlier, another curious octopus stole the wedding ring off my wife’s finger, never to be recovered. Octopuses love novel shiny things. Peering into their dens, I’ve found earrings, bracelets, spark plugs, sunglasses and a toy car with a revolving cylinder that the octopus spun round and round with its suckers.

As I wondered how to get my camera back without alarming my young friend, something surprising happened. She turned the camera around and began to film my diving partner and me.

The intriguing images she captured — videos of her own arms draped over the camera lens with our bodies in the background — had a profound effect on me. After many years filming octopuses and hundreds of other animals that call the Sea Forest home, for the first time I was seeing the world — and myself — from her perspective.

We must have looked strange to her in our masks and with our underwater flashlights. But in that moment I remembered that despite all our technology, we are not so different from our animal kin. Every breath of air, every drop of water, every bite of food comes from the living planet we share.

Monday is Earth Day, and I am tempted to ask myself how humanity can save our wild planet and undo the devastation we have unleashed upon the natural world. Where I live, in the Cape of Good Hope, I am privileged to be surrounded by nature, but we are grappling with pollution and dwindling numbers of shellfish, fish, raptors and insect species. Worldwide, we are at a tipping point with an estimated 69 percent decline in wildlife populations.

When I consider the vast network of living creatures on earth, it’s clear that “saving the planet” is the wrong goal. Unless earth gets obliterated by an asteroid or experiences some similar catastrophic event, the planet could go on for several billion years. But without the biosphere that makes it possible for us to eat and breathe, humanity could not survive.

The question we should be asking is what caused the precipitous increase in species loss and what can we do to reverse it. To me, it all started when we disconnected from our wild origins. While agricultural and technological revolutions have enabled massive population growth and innovation , they have also instilled the belief that we can control nature, that our planet is an infinite resource to be mined for our advancement, comfort and entertainment.

Today 56 percent of the world population lives in urban areas, a percentage expected to grow to nearly 70 percent by 2050 . That means that more than half of us are cut off from reminders that we are still part of nature and utterly dependent on its health. It’s only when something truly devastating happens, like the recent flooding in Dubai, that we remember that even the greatest human advancements can be brought to a standstill by nature’s power.

I am not calling for us to leave all modern comforts behind, just pleading for us to get to know nature better, rather than try to “save” her.

In the past decade I have taken more than 4,000 dives in the Sea Forest. My encounters with mollusks, sharks and jellyfish there have convinced me that there is much we will lose if we do not value the tremendous abundance of life on earth.

We do this first by protecting biodiversity hot spots and by restoring degraded ecosystems; the enormous regenerative power I see every day in nature is what gives me hope for the future. It also means learning from and supporting Indigenous people who protect 80 percent of the world’s biodiversity and who have, over millenniums, developed many innovative ways to live with the land and sea. One promising example of partnership is a recent grant from the National Science Foundation to support collaboration between Indigenous ecological knowledge and Western science.

Activities that cause long-term destruction of the sea and earth, such as strip mining , deep sea mining and industrial trawling, need to be halted immediately. Farming methods have to change, with greater emphasis on soil recovery and regeneration . We must continue to find alternatives to fossil fuels and push for a worldwide reduction in the production and use of plastics.

But each of us has a role to play, too; it starts with challenging ourselves to reconnect with the wild. So much of our modern world seems designed to tame us: to dull our minds, to separate us from the natural world, to convince us that what will help us survive is more consumption.

Like my octopus friends, we fill our houses with shiny new things. But our piles of stuff are much bigger and the cost of acquisition much greater.

We can break free of this tame conditioning. When we dedicate even just a few minutes per day to observing wild creatures on their own terms, in their own homes, regardless of where we live, we connect with the concept of biodiversity not simply on an intellectual level but also on an emotional level. We see the world differently — and ourselves, too.

How strange it is that one silly primate can see itself as separate from all those it shares this world with. What might happen if we remembered we are a part of this wild world — and let that understanding and humility guide every choice we make?

Voters’ partisanship has long varied by the type of community they live in. Those in urban counties mostly align with the Democratic Party, while the reverse is true among those in rural counties. In suburbs, where a majority of Americans live , voters’ partisanship is fairly evenly divided.

There have been only modest changes in these patterns in recent years. Over the past two decades, however, voters in rural counties have become increasingly Republican.

• In 2000, the Republican Party held a narrow leaned identification advantage over the Democratic Party among rural voters (51% vs. 45%), but that grew substantially over the next decade. By 2010, the GOP’s advantage had widened to 13 percentage points. It has nearly doubled since then, and the Republican Party now holds a 25-point edge over the Democratic Party.
• The Democratic Party, by contrast, has a nearly identical advantage among voters in urban counties: 60% identify with or lean to the Democratic Party, while 37% identify as or lean Republican. This gap has been relatively consistent over the past two decades, though it is slightly narrower than in 2016 (when 65% of voters in urban counties associated with the Democratic Party and 34% with the GOP).
• By comparison, suburban voters have been closely divided over the past two decades. Half of voters in suburban counties currently align with the Republican Party, while 47% associate with the Democratic Party – identical to the shares who aligned with each party in 2000.

For the most part, the demographic differences in partisanship seen among all voters are evident among those living in different community types.

• Women voters are less likely than men to align with the GOP, and this is evident across urban, suburban and rural counties.
• Younger voters are less committed to the Republican Party than are older voters, regardless of the type of county in which they live.
• White voters in rural counties are especially likely to identify as Republican or lean Republican (66% do so). That compares with 57% of White voters in suburbs and 48% in urban counties.
• Among Hispanic, Black and Asian voters, there is little difference in partisanship between those who live in urban counties and those who live in suburban counties. (Hispanic, Asian and Black rural voters are smaller groups, and sample sizes do not allow for separate reporting.)

This story is part of Image’s April issue, “ Reverie ” — an invitation to lean into the spaces of dreams and fantasy. Enjoy the journey.

The first Visitation occurs in a dream on the wings of an aircraft transporting me and my mother to San Antonio, because my sister has died. My sister materializes through golden-hued cumulus clouds, beckons with her hand for me to come to her, and so I do. In my palms, she drops an orb of pure golden light before retreating back into cloud.

Visitations, in addition to meaning a gathering of friends and family for the recently deceased, can also be defined as a visit from the deceased. In my Dreaming Life, my sister returns, randomly yet always intensely, to travel here to me within my perceptible life, to tell me things. It is not always so clear what it is that she has traveled so far to tell me.

Instead of holding a visitation, my family chooses to offer two funeral services. A whole grocery store cannot be shut down, so we opt to hold the service over two nights, to allow my deceased sister’s coworkers to come by between their shifts.

Every person — customers, old school friends, neighbors, children of exes — holds on to me to say how my sister had been their angel and inspiration and life’s guiding light. My sister, who died at age 48 of breast cancer, had become an angel through the workings of Death, but she had — as reaffirmed again and again through the tears and sorrows of the receiving line — also been an angel in her Waking Life.

Visitations occur because those who mourn occupy an unreal space; loss transcends reality or else collapses that once-stable sense of self, space and time.

As any of us who have lost know, such deep losses fracture the self. Loss upends our notions of space: The space is now dominated by an insurmountable absence. This absence distorts time or those edges of days or weeks or months that were once so clearly demarcated.

In mourning and grief, it is this very haze of the fracturing of self, space and time that can find, in the practice of Visitation, some temporary bearings within a world upended. To see the familiar faces, to hear the old story, to think about the old song — such remembrances tether us, however frayed and fragile the gossamer of grief, to a world transformed. The world is now distorted: it is a world where someone’s gone missing.

Watching your dream play out before your eyes in waking life is like inhabiting an alternate reality: hair-raising, confronting, wrecking.

In the world now absent my sister, I cling to each and every Visitation from her as she comes in dreams. I have always had a peculiar interest in the Dreaming Life, and after my sister died, I found that if I wanted to continue some form of communication with her, I would have to be the astronomer and detailed data collector in the observatory of sleep. Only I could keep the lookout; only I could transcribe the fates.

So I began to entangle my Waking Life within the Dreaming Life.

Everyone suddenly, it seems, wants to lucid dream. I say: First dream, but dream actively. Here are some practices I take to ensure an engagement in my Dream Life:

• Keep a notebook bedside. Reach for this notebook first thing upon waking, whatever the hour. Even if you can’t recall any dreams, this practice, which can be difficult to establish, will develop into a habit. If you cannot recall the dream fully formed, then record dreamlets — the fragments of dreams.
• Drink water. The body, of course, is optimal when hydrated, but falling asleep with a full bladder will help you to wake in the middle of the night with a glimmer of a dream. Be sure to discipline yourself to write your dreamlets down before you go to the bathroom and forget. Keep a notebook by the toilet to help you remember.
• Rest your mind before sleep. Tell yourself that you are going to dream and that you will remember your dreams and that you will write them down. It’s OK if you’re stressing or thinking troubled thoughts before bed. Think what you will, but always firmly believe that you will dream. I recommend reading before bed, as it is an activity that stimulates the mind, imagination, openness to surprise, close attention and interpretation: These are the stuffs of reading your own dreams.
• Sleep in. We have more opportunities to dream when we are able to sleep in. Give yourself the gift of this at least once a week.
• Try mugwort in your bedtime tea. After a few weeks of active dreaming, try mugwort tea on the nights when you can sleep and dream more freely. Mugwort is an herb that is easily foraged and induces more vivid dreams. A teaspoon will suffice.
• Ask yourself what is troubling you. Can you reframe this worry through what your dreams have been showing you?

By paying attention to your dreams and collecting your dreamlets, you will begin to see a way out. You can face the situation, in however a veiled or coded way, in your dreams. You can practice your way out or through or in.

In a dream, I was once an unexpected visitor. I came upon a corridor, white and filled with light, through which my sister glided. I ran after her, but I was stopped by an attendant, in white, who told me that I couldn’t go through the doors but that my sister was there, on the other side, making it beautiful for me.

And so who’s to say that in this life, we are not merely visiting? If the dreams of unborn babes are the dreams of practicing at living, for what then is this Waking Life preparing us?

In one dream, my sister wants to go to Brazil. We’re on a highway in San Antonio. We’re going fast around all the cloverleafs and overpasses. We take curves dangerously fast. I tell her that I’m happy to go with her, but does she know the way? Yes, she replies. She says she goes all the time. She knows the way. In the dream, we never get there, but we’re so happy to be free, to just do it, to go wherever, whenever with a sister.

In dreaming, it’s not so easy as paying attention to merely one dream. One dream taken out of your map of dreaming is merely a piece, a clue, a hint toward a totality. One dream is one spot of paint viewed up close on an otherwise vast masterpiece — you won’t know what it is you’re seeing until you’ve amassed enough, connected the dots, done the good work of a detective.

I am a writer who gains through fragments, rarely composing a full essay in one go. I prefer instead to accumulate the bits and pieces, stitch them up, allow happenstance and discovery to arrange the pieces, determine the binding. I like to begin in chaos and have that chaos propel its own focus or refractured brilliance.

My Dreaming Life is no different: I see dreams as fragments of a greater masterpiece. So I jot down my dreams.

These dreamlets, these glimmers of a seemingly real and lived experience, eventually pull toward their narratives, eventually show me my struggles and push me on toward a way out in such a way that I can solve the problem in the Dream World while simultaneously tackling a very real-world problem. The two are not inseparable.

I collect the glimmers and connect the dots. My sleuth side sees dreams as not a mere escape from the logic or hardships or realities of the day but rather a world in the making. The dreams enable me to prepare for the next life as it navigates me, night after night, from one realm to the next and back again.

My sister and I entered the scary exhibit at a wax museum on one of the outings we last took together. She was afraid of what might appear. I held her hand and led the way. I knew it would be one of the last times I would hold her hand. My sister, who had always gone first in my fear of dark hallways, was now being led by my hand.

Except, in Waking Life, that is in reality, my sister is the one who goes first into the fear of the dark, into the dream of Death, of which I have always held a tight fear.

If I am to see what there is to see in the ongoing series of Visitation dreams from my deceased sister, then I would have to conclude that she is truly there, on the other side, making it beautiful for me.
