Art director

As an art director, you’d be responsible for image aesthetics typically in newspapers, magazines, product packaging, and cinematography production. Like a graphic designer, you’ll create a design, but you’ll also direct others to develop artwork and layouts. 

Design educator

Average annual base salary (US): $50,547

Graphic design educators are needed in secondary and higher education degree programs. Your teaching would fall under the technical or vocational education umbrella in this role. In this role, you’ll present lectures, develop a curriculum, advise students, and more.   

User experience (UX) designer

Average annual base salary (US): $81,356

The UX designer works to make products and services more user-friendly and accessible. You will work with digital designs for websites and apps as a UX designer. You’d work with static and animated imagery to create a seamless user experience.

Production artist

Average annual base salary (US) : $43,114

A production artist is a conceptual designer. In this role, you’d ensure a design works for the intended format, such as an Instagram post or billboard. This role is typically less involved in design brainstorming and is more focused on executing ideas. 

Book designer

Average annual base salary (US): $51,621

A book designer works to create the entire appearance of a book. As a book designer, you’d typically design covers, fonts, layouts, and exterior designs. You might also select the paper type and other features to make the book visually appealing.

Salary and job outlook

According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), a graphic designer’s median annual salary was $50,710 in May 2021. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $31,310, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $98,260 [ 1 ].

The BLS projects the graphic designer field will grow 3 percent from 2021 to 2031 with an average of 23,900 openings. Many openings will be from workers leaving for different occupations or exiting the labor force [ 2 ].

Do I need a degree to be a graphic designer?

Many employers seeking graphic designers desire a degree in graphic design or a related field paired with a strong portfolio. According to Zippia, 68 percent of graphic designers have a bachelor’s degree, and 23 percent have an associate. [3 ] However, a degree isn’t mandatory. Some graphic designers at large companies only have a high school diploma or GED, but they’ve gained the technical skills they need to be successful.

Degrees for graphic designers

According to the BLS, a graphic designer usually has a bachelor’s degree in graphic design or a similar study area. Other educational options are available such as the following: 

Associate of Arts in Graphic Design

If you opt to study for an associate degree in graphic design, expect to complete it in two years. You’ll learn and use software such as Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign. You can use your class projects to build a portfolio of your creative work.

Bachelor of Arts in Graphic Design

Pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Graphic Design typically takes four years. You’ll start your college career with general education coursework and art courses, such as art history. The career-focused coursework in the bachelor’s degree program will help you build your portfolio.

Master of Fine Arts in Graphic Design

Many colleges and universities offer a Master of Fine Arts in Graphic Design, and some offer a visual communication degree focusing on graphic design, UX design, and motion design. You’ll need a bachelor’s degree in a related field to apply for a fine arts master’s program.

Certifications for graphic designer

Certifications are a great way to enhance your resume and show that you’ll willing to learn about new topics. Certification programs are available for graphic design in specialized fields, such as Adobe Certified Expert, Autodesk #DS Max Certified, and Adobe Certified Instructor.

Adobe Certified Expert (ACE)

You can take exams for Adobe Certified Expert certifications in Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator, Flash, and Dreamweaver. There is a fee for each exam, and practice tests are available.

Adobe Certified Professional

The latest Adobe Certified Professional certification demonstrates knowledge of an Adobe Creative Cloud software program. You must have at least 150 hours of instruction and hands-on use of the application to take the exam. You can take the proctored exams in person or online.

Autodesk 3DS Max Certified

This certification demonstrates knowledge of using the Autodesk 3DS Max, a professional 3D computer graphics program used in animation, games, and imaging.

Adobe Certified Instructor (ACI)

To be eligible for the Adobe Certified Instructor certification, you must pass an exam and have teaching credentials or three or more years of employment in education. You may want to consider this if you plan to move into graphic design instruction.

Although you won’t need prior graphic design experience for this program, it's helpful to have some knowledge of the Adobe Creative Suite programs.

G raphic design is a discipline that impacts businesses, the media, entertainment, culture, & even politics. The problem with graphic design is that people who aren’t in the know don’t necessarily understand just how important it is. A branding message can be the difference between a superstar product & a product that never gets the attention it deserves. 

Why is graphic design so important? Because it is an essential tool that enhances how you communicate with other people. It serves to convey ideas in a way that is not only aesthetically pleasing but highly impactful. When used correctly, branding influences peoples, choices & opinions on a subconscious level. 

Don’t think it’s that deep? Look around you- there’s a reason why banking websites tend to use blue in their branding & that health stores try to persuade you to buy from them by using typography & palettes reminiscent of nature or farmers markets. For everyone convinced that graphic design is just about making pretty pictures, I’m going to outline eleven reasons that will help them see differently.

For example, psychologists have researched Colour theory for years & has shown to impact human emotions significantly. A colour’s meaning can be subjective based on factors like culture or personal preference. Yet, some colours share a universal meaning. For example, colour wheels classify red, orange & yellow as warm tones, while blue, purple & green are cool tones.

Graphic design requires human-led intelligence & ideas to respond to trends, tastes, that we dictate. While I think it’s vital to employ & train up in the latest technology to assist designers in doing our jobs, I believe our eye for design is a gift that can not be replicated.

10 | Graphic Design Creates a Means for Entrepreneurs & Self-employed People.

Technology is cheaper & more accessible. The Internet offers a wealth of inspiration and ongoing learning. There has never been a better time to become self-employed, freelance or start your own studio/ agency. If you want to travel the world, you can still be a successful freelance graphic designer. With the shifts in how people are working & how we make money, graphic design appears to be adapting well to the world’s changes.

Once you become a graphic designer, you’ll find that your new-found skills will translate to many other parts of your life. Graphic design gives you skills that are in demand & can be applied to many different career paths. Over the years, I’ve become more resourceful, detail orientated, quick-thinking & mindful of my decisions. Unless you’ve gone full hermit-in-the-woods, graphic design is everywhere around you. Reading this post on your digital screen after navigating to it through the graphic user interface on your device is made possible through graphic design. But what, specifically, makes it important? That’s a really big question.

Let's start way, way back, when the value of graphic design first becomes apparent: with the emergence of drawn and written communication. Recognizable forms and visual language shared by groups of people allowed them to communicate in new ways that replaced, supplemented, or recorded verbal communication. This foundational element of large-scale human civilization cannot be understated.

Humans are visual creatures. Even before this earliest written communication, we have used our eyes to quickly assess situations and make quick decisions.

But, that’s ancient history. Right? Why is graphic design important today? And more specifically…

Why is graphic design important for business?

As with early human communication, the importance of graphic design for business can also not be understated. And it’s important for many of the same reasons. Let’s take a look.

These are table stakes.

The most basic benefit of graphic design is in clear communication . Design principles like visual hierarchy, white space, and color theory help achieve clarity in a body of content. Intricate topics, complex data, potentially confusing instructions all are easier to follow when graphic design skills are applied. We see this at play on websites, brochures, books, maps, instructions, exhibits, and just about everywhere else content is presented.

Accessibility is a specific design principle that is focused on removing barriers to content. Designing and illustrating instructions without the need for text removes the language barrier. Designing typefaces for optimal legibility addresses vision barriers. This has become important enough that search engines are taking accessibility into consideration as they rank search results. And it’s good business—it increases your audience.

Navigation and wayfinding are another area where graphic design has an outsized importance. This can include the Graphic User Interface, which made the operation of computers accessible to those of us who don’t write code. It includes the design of your map application on your smartphone. And it shows up in the physical world around us as design systems and maps to help us navigate the subway, campus wayfinding to help you find the library, and an event map that helps you navigate three floors of exhibits and presenters.

Clear communication is essential to the operation of business, but isn’t always about growing a business. That's were we get into influence.

Graphic design for influencing decisions (a.k.a. marketing)

Fight or flight. Eat or retreat. The decision to stay or run like hell is NOT an example of graphic design, but it is one of the earliest examples of humans making decisions quickly based on visual short cuts. These shortcuts were likely based on a type of movement, size, speed, color, smell, texture, or pattern. Even today, these shortcuts remain, and sometimes send our lizard brains recoiling from a threatening form without bothering to consult the frontal lobe.

Humans still use our eyes to make decisions, making an alarming number of decisions not based on safety, danger, merit, or fact, but based on a cursory look and first impression. Examples of this? We judge books by their cover, wine by the label, people by their clothes, lawyers by their logo, and mac & cheese by its box.

This is the domain of your brand —how your audience perceives your organization.

Graphic designers like us and our marketer friends create brand systems and campaigns that appeal to your specific audience to influence their decisions to take a specific action (buy the thing). Why does this work? Because your clients and customers will first assess the credibility, quality, value, and relevance of your company, your service, or your product with their eyes.

  • The brand identity and logo for a law firm that projects trust, credibility, class, and sets some expectations about price point.
  • The website for the senior living facility designed to reassure the adult children and lead them to request a tour.
  • The brochure for the school that projects warmth, joy, and hope.
  • The event’s environmental graphics that build anticipation and excitement, while they also manage the flow of attendees.

Your audience will also take cues from graphic design to quickly assess the shared values of your organization. For example, the use of red- or blue-dominant design to advertise political affiliation. Or the use of green and natural tones on food packaging to imply shared values around health and ecology.

We can think of all these as visual heuristics . When we can’t be bothered to inform our decision properly through research and testing, we use these visual cues to speed up our decision making.

A little sidebar here about the impact of graphic design on society—not just business.

  • Propaganda is overt manipulation through graphic design and written content. Whether you see it as good or bad will likely come down to which side of an issue (or war) you identify with.
  • Graphic design is used as a tool for cultural reinforcement . Consider national or religious icons, text, and visual conventions. All can be considered works of graphic design, and all are there to keep a specific audience engaged with a cultural institution.
  • Graphic design is used to present, and sometimes to color the reporting of news and events . The same piece of news can be presented as frightening or calming, simply in the use of different words, typefaces, and color. Politicians and cable news channels with biased agendas rely on the power of design to make a non-issue seem critical, or to make light of critical news.
  • Persuasive design is a tactic used by casinos, game designers, and technology companies to increase the time we spend on their platform. If you’ve caught yourself mindlessly scrolling LinkedIn for 45 minutes when all you intended was to send a quick note, you’ll know what I’m talking about. They hack our dopamine by serving up the occasional reward, and it works.
  • And finally, AI will likely find its most nefarious uses here. Graphic design for propaganda that deepens cultural divides, skews or fabricates current events, and keeps us doom-scrolling through it all. (I’m writing this in the Fall of 2023, a year out from the next presidential election).

So, then… why is graphic design so important?

If we boil all this down to the simplest answer, graphic design is so important because humans are, and will always be, visual creatures.

As we have for millennia, we will continue to rely on our eyes to quickly assess situations and make quick decisions (and more and more of that will be in the digital realm).

Be aware of the role of design in your life. Is it making things clearer or easier? How is it influencing your feelings about something? And if you are in business, understand that graphic design can and does affect every interaction with your customers and marketplace. Neglecting to consider and use that to your advantage (ethically) is missing an opportunity for growth and success.

The famous “Share a Coke” campaign is credited with a 2% rise in sales for Coca-Cola at launch, for the first time in a decade. Coke didn’t rebrand or create a new product; it just transformed the design of the product packaging to create a “just for you” feeling by personalizing the can or bottle for each member of its target audience.

The optimal design of their products is something most Apple users are familiar with (e.g. did you know that almost all Apple notebooks have a slight indentation below the trackpad, allowing users to open their laptop with one hand easily?).

But you don’t need to know details like this to appreciate the great design of this brand. It’s enough to see Apple’s timeless logo design, and you already know what to expect.

If you want to achieve brand loyalty, you must persistently remind potential customers of your products and core values with your visuals : a good logo; layout techniques for a clean and comprehensive website design;  impressive and inspiring advertisements; beautiful packaging and branded social media pages—all of this needs to paint a cohesive brand image.

A visual language for your customers

The color palette, imagery, logo, typography, and design elements your brand will use, form a precise language through which you communicate with potential clients. Great graphic design can help you create your visual identity and brand guide, but also a unique narrative .

Taking all the previous points into account, it’s evident that good business doesn’t exist without good design . From branding to advertising, potential clients will judge you based on their looks . With the right usage of basic design principles and a strong brand aesthetic, you can have good design too.

But what about your competitors?

Well, another critical reason why graphic design is important for any business is that a creative approach to design can help stay ahead of the competition . A great example to learn from is Absolut vodka’s iconic ad campaign. How can you make a sort of tasteless alcoholic drink, in a simple transparent bottle exciting?

Instead of the usual marketing strategies of claiming to be the best, Absolut offered a whole new experience, with ads that transformed the drink into a unique experience : from a bottle inspired by Andy Warhol to a special ad for every city, suddenly Absolut was different from anything else on the market.

And the results speak for themselves. When the campaign started in 1981, the drink manufacturer held a mere 2.5% market share in the US. At the end of the campaign, Absolut dominated the market, with over half of all imported vodka!

In an age when innovation is key to business success and growth, you’ve likely come across the term “design thinking.” Perhaps you’ve heard it mentioned by a senior leader as something that needs to be utilized more, or maybe you’ve seen it on a prospective employee's resume.

While design thinking is an ideology based on designers’ workflows for mapping out stages of design, its purpose is to provide all professionals with a standardized innovation process to develop creative solutions to problems—design-related or not.

Why is design thinking needed? Innovation is defined as a product, process, service, or business model featuring two critical characteristics: novel and useful. Yet, there’s no use in creating something new and novel if people won’t use it. Design thinking offers innovation the upgrade it needs to inspire meaningful and impactful solutions.

But what is design thinking, and how does it benefit working professionals?

What Is Design Thinking?

Design thinking is a mindset and approach to problem-solving and innovation anchored around human-centered design . While it can be traced back centuries—and perhaps even longer—it gained traction in the modern business world after Tim Brown, CEO and president of design company IDEO, published an article about it in the Harvard Business Review .

Design thinking is different from other innovation and ideation processes in that it’s solution-based and user-centric rather than problem-based. This means it focuses on the solution to a problem instead of the problem itself.

For example, if a team is struggling with transitioning to remote work, the design thinking methodology encourages them to consider how to increase employee engagement rather than focus on the problem (decreasing productivity).

The essence of design thinking is human-centric and user-specific. It’s about the person behind the problem and solution, and requires asking questions such as “Who will be using this product?” and “How will this solution impact the user?”

The first, and arguably most important, step of design thinking is building empathy with users. By understanding the person affected by a problem, you can find a more impactful solution. On top of empathy, design thinking is centered on observing product interaction, drawing conclusions based on research, and ensuring the user remains the focus of the final implementation.

The Four Phases of Innovation

So, what does design thinking entail? There are many models of design thinking that range from three to seven steps.

In the online course Design Thinking and Innovation , Harvard Business School Dean Srikant Datar leverages a four-phase innovation framework. The phases venture from concrete to abstract thinking and back again as the process loops, reverses, and repeats. This is an important balance because abstract thinking increases the likelihood that an idea will be novel. It’s essential, however, to anchor abstract ideas in concrete thinking to ensure the solution is valid and useful.

Here are the four phases for effective innovation and, by extension, design thinking.

The first phase is about narrowing down the focus of the design thinking process. It involves identifying the problem statement to come up with the best outcome. This is done through observation and taking the time to determine the problem and the roadblocks that prevented a solution in the past.

Various tools and frameworks are available—and often needed—to make concrete observations about users and facts gathered through research. Regardless of which tools are implemented, the key is to observe without assumptions or biased expectations.

Once findings from your observations are collected, the next step is to shape insights by framing those observations. This is where you can venture into the abstract by reframing the problem in the form of a statement or question.

Once the problem statement or question has been solidified—not finalized—the next step is ideation. You can use a tool such as systematic inventive thinking (SIT) in this stage, which is useful for creating an innovative process that can be replicated in the future.

The goal is to ultimately overcome cognitive fixedness and devise new and innovative ideas that solve the problems you identified. Continue to actively avoid assumptions and keep the user at the forefront of your mind during ideation sessions.

The third phase involves developing concepts by critiquing a range of possible solutions. This includes multiple rounds of prototyping, testing, and experimenting to answer critical questions about a concept’s viability.

Remember: This step isn’t about perfection, but rather, experimenting with different ideas and seeing which parts work and which don’t.

4. Implement

The fourth and final phase, implementation, is when the entire process comes together. As an extension of the develop phase, implementation starts with testing, reflecting on results, reiterating, and testing again. This may require going back to a prior phase to iterate and refine until you find a successful solution. Such an approach is recommended because design thinking is often a nonlinear, iterative process.

In this phase, don’t forget to share results with stakeholders and reflect on the innovation management strategies implemented during the design thinking process. Learning from experience is an innovation process and design thinking project all its own.

Why Design Thinking Skills Matter

The main value of design thinking is that it offers a defined process for innovation. While trial and error is a good way to test and experiment what works and what doesn’t, it’s often time-consuming, expensive, and ultimately ineffective. On the other hand, following the concrete steps of design thinking is an efficient way to develop new, innovative solutions.

On top of a clear, defined process that enables strategic innovation, design thinking can have immensely positive outcomes for your career—in terms of both advancement and salary.

Marketing manager job postings that require design thinking skills, however, have a median annual salary of $133,900—a 24 percent increase.

Overall, businesses are looking for talent with design thinking skills. As of November 2021, there were 29,648 job postings in the United States advertising design thinking as a necessary skill—a 153 percent increase from November 2020, and a 637 percent increase from November 2017.

As businesses continue to recognize the need for design thinking and innovation, they’ll likely create more demand for employees with those skills.

Learning Design Thinking

Design thinking is an extension of innovation that allows you to design solutions for end users with a single problem statement in mind. It not only imparts valuable skills but can help advance your career.

It’s also a collaborative endeavor that can only be mastered through practice with peers. As Datar says in the introduction to Design Thinking and Innovation : “Just as with learning how to swim, the best way to practice is to jump in and try.”

If you want to learn design thinking, take an active role in your education. Start polls, problem-solving exercises, and debates with peers to get a taste of the process. It’s also important to seek out diverse viewpoints to prepare yourself for the business world.

Why Graphic Design is Important for Your Brand

However, if any one of those parts is missed, the message will likely miss its target too. There’s a misconception that graphic design is just “pretty pictures,” but it’s actually presentation, organization and well-thought-out market concepts that deliver everything in one good-looking package.

Creating a Consistent Brand

In my career, I have had the opportunity to design for all business types and sizes, from big corporations down to small “mom & pop” shops. The one thing they all have in common is that they hired us to give them a consistent brand; a face that their audience would recognize every time they received or saw anything from them. So why is it that businesses are always wanting that solid brand foundation , but trying to find short cuts/low-cost measures to execute it the right way?

Not Just a Logo

Branding isn’t limited to just a company logo. It means putting that logo on everything your company presents as theirs. And not just adding the logo to any old layout/design, but having that ad/email/brochure tie into the brand using the brand’s fonts, colors and remaining consistent with the graphic standards that your audience has been used to seeing. Consistency is the key to good branding, and graphic design is the key to consistency.

Graphic design creates the structure for delivering your message, so that over time, your audience recognizes YOU in every message you deliver. Consistency creates confidence, assurance that you know the brand…predictability. If the client decides to execute their own thing, be it by another designer, an in-house creative or on their own without following the design previously established, their audience may lose trust in that brand.

Without this brand consistency, your audience won’t necessarily recognize you. In layman’s terms, it’s as if a friend gets their hair chopped off and colored, then dresses up in drag and shows up at your door expecting you to recognize them. You’ll certainly figure it out because it’s still them, but they look so different, you’re not sure who they are anymore!

How Graphics Attract Prospects

Beauty is attractive, we all know that, and graphic design delivers beauty in order to attract the target audience. But in advertising , it’s not just about beauty; there is a very small window of time for an ad, email or website to grab the audience’s attention before they move onto the next thing. If they find something in that window of time that makes them look twice (a graphic, a headline), then they’ll stop to take in the message. A well-designed marketing piece helps the audience see past the graphics to the message, but it’s the appealing graphics that reel them in.
