Many people attend high school, college, and professional football every year. You can relate many aspects of football and sports to life… I think football is the best sport I have ever played or watched. Football requires tremendous amounts of teamwork and sportsmanship to be successful. No one man can win a football game. He may make a big tackle or a diving catch, but without him and the other 10 players on the field he can not win a game.

A football player can not be selfish and put himself before his team. ‘One man practicing sportsmanship is far better than a hundred teaching it’s aid legendary Notre Dame football coach Knut e Rockne. A team can win big one week and the next week play as if it is their first time playing the game. That is what makes football exciting and fun to follow. You have to prepare for a football game. Penn State head coach Joe Paterno said, ‘The will to win is important, but the will to prepare is vital.’ In baseball, teams play almost every day. In basketball, they may play every other day. In football, they play every week.

Football teams can not prepare for a football game in a day or two. It takes a week of preparing, studying, and learning how the other team plays the game. It takes dedication and a commitment to winning. It is like preparing for a test or maybe a job interview.

‘The most interesting thing about this sport (football), at least to me, is the activity of preparation-any aspect of preparing for games. • Football has replaced baseball as our nation's most popular spectator sport. Our media-based, commercial culture supports this change.
• Baseball and football express two different American mythologies. The former celebrates individual striving; the latter, collective advance.
• These different approaches can be seen in the two sports' treatment of of space and of time, the role of individuals, and framing by media.

“What it was, was football.” Next year marks the 70th anniversary of Andy Griffith’s classic monologue about a naïve country preacher who goes to a “college town” to set up a tent service and finds himself caught up in a crowd headed to a football game.

Sitting on a bank amidst a screaming mob, the innocent fellow regards a “little green cow pasture” with white lines. There are several “convicts” in striped shirts running about blowing whistles. “Pretty girls in short dresses” dance around. And two armies of energetic men struggle to move a “funny-looking little pumpkin” from one end of the field to the other. Lacking a ticket, the narrator leaves the event without deciding what it was all about.

Clearly a product of a simpler time, the young actor’s recording climbed to number nine on the Billboard chart and earned him an appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show .

Aside from the bucolic humor of the piece, what strikes the modern listener is its claim that anyone, however isolated, could be that unknowing of the game of football. Nevertheless, in 1953, football was something largely for high schools and colleges. Broadcast television was in its infancy. Professional football was centered in the industrial North.

More to the point, baseball was the national game. World War II, many said, was about defending baseball, Mom, and apple pie. Aspiring players filled schoolyards, town squares, and city parks. Professional stars were the stuff of legend. Now, if some country preacher claimed to know nothing of baseball, that really would be incredible.

Clearly, things have changed. According to a Gallup poll, 37% of Americans list football as their favorite spectator sport. Fifty-seven percent consider themselves “fans.” That support is strongest among men, those over 35, and political conservatives. This contrasts with the 11% who claim basketball as their favorite, the 9% who favor baseball, and the 7% who prefer soccer.

Why has this shift occurred? After all, few people play football for long, even when young. Football for girls and women is rare indeed. Although the American inventions of basketball and baseball have spread to many societies, football is confined largely to this country. For the rest of the world, football is what we call soccer.

Some of this is due merely to familiarity. Much as Americans once “knew” baseball, now they know football. Local high schools and colleges receive widespread media coverage. Professional teams carry the names of cities and states. Such sides promote collective identity among people who otherwise have little in common. At an individual level, football gives people a rhythm to their week, an allegiance to claim, and a channel for emotional commitment. Rooters “tailgate” and bask in the crowd; they gather in homes and bars.

Our media-saturated and commercialized culture encourages this. Football appurtenances—like jerseys and banners—are common sights. Sports-based television channels and websites bombard the public with football information. Fantasy leagues, office pools, and computer games abound. Organized sports gambling, now legal, allows people to bet on many aspects of games.

The reader would observe, however, that most of this could be said about any sport that receives societal emphasis. Think about the prominence of soccer in most countries. So, what is it about football that makes Americans so interested?

In that light, I recall Murray Ross’s essay, “Football Red and Baseball Green.” Writing in 1971, when football was replacing baseball as the nation’s dominant sport, Ross argues that the two games express different mythologies. Our “national pastime” expresses the small-town sensibility of nineteenth- and early twentieth-century America. Football is the modern, more directly competitive version of our society, the outcome of ambitious collectivities that organize people to do their bidding.

Consider below some basic differences between the two sports. I’ll share some of Ross’s insights and include my own.

Conceptions of time . Sports and games are little worlds of their own sort, specialized regimes with stipulated goals , rules, memberships, equipment, and impositions of space and time. Pointedly, baseball defies the clock time most of us live by. While not as leisurely as cricket (where play can take several days), baseball games take as long as they take. If the score is tied after nine innings, the game goes on. Indeed, every at-bat, every inning, is an event with its own stages.

Contrast this to football, which moves clock time to its center. Commonly, that is 60 minutes, divided into quarters. Teams have a designated period to get a play “off”; woe to those committing a “delay of game.” Oddly, the actual running of each play may last only 4 or 5 seconds; most of the game ticks off while teams are huddling to contemplate their strategies.

Importantly, the game clock is a fundamental constraint of the play. Teams ahead “milk the clock”: teams behind call “time-out” and go into “hurry-up” offenses.

Ross’s argument is that baseball’s lackadaisical view of time contrasts with the modern attention span. Facing schedule challenges in their own lives, contemporary people like to watch others struggle with time constraints. They like short, focused plays, so their minds can wander during huddles, time-out, and commercial breaks. They are willing to commit three hours to a purportedly sixty-minute football game. They are less willing to sit through baseball’s seemingly endless pitcher-catcher tosses and managerial dithering.

Displays of space . Typically, games have specialized fields or boards that direct people’s attention and movements. Baseball’s diamond, and ultimately cone-shaped field, widens the spectators’ vision. Balls travel outward, sometimes into the field’s gaps or corners. Significantly, runners move to bases of safety and, ideally, return “home.” In that sense, batsmen emulate the mythic odysseys of traditional heroes. Very few complete these difficult journeys, returning to the dugout as failures.

Football is instead a game of territorial conquest. Teams gain and lose ground. When quarters end, they change direction. Much is made of yardage and “first downs.” “End zones” are sacred territory; so is the space “between the uprights.”

Ross stresses that both sports have their operational centers—for baseball, the pitcher-catcher exchange; for football, the center-quarterback hike. From this, baseball opens widely. Football remains relatively focused. Eye zero in on small portions of the field.

Again, this focused movement—making one’s way through a crowd of people—seems closer to the modern spirit.

Role of the individual . Oddly, the team-game of baseball is largely an individual sport. Batters come to the plate to face the pitcher alone. Defensive players occupy isolated positions on the field, either “making plays” or “committing errors.” Statistics emphasize these individual successes and failures.

Football is more thoroughly collective. Individual success—perhaps running with the ball or completing a pass—depends greatly on the success of blockers. Every teammate is involved in the design and execution of every play. Collectively, defenses execute strategies.

Doubtless, baseball fans still celebrate the solitary individual, who successfully takes on an opposing pitcher and his eight comrades. They enjoy seeing the faces of players and their idiosyncratic mannerisms. But that individual attempt to go out and conquer the world is more of a nineteenth than twentieth-century ethic.

More thoroughly social, contemporary people accept that group cohesion is the foundation of individual success. Football heroes are covered up, in helmets and pads. Individuals become soldiers, elements in a great collective striving.

Media channeling . Because of the way action radiates, baseball is a difficult sport to televise. Similarly, television fails to capture the sights, sounds, and “feel” of a relatively quiet sport. Stadium spectators revel in the crack of the ball off the bat, the pop of a pitch in the catcher’s mitt, and the umpire’s dramatic bellowing. Most of this is lost on TV.

Football is noisier and more predictable, essentially a series of brief collisions. Because all 22 players align themselves in a narrow section of the rectangular field, cameras can focus easily. Typically, the action ranges in one direction. The time between plays allows for replays, often in slow motion. Screens in stadiums let fans and players watch as well.

Pointedly, the superhuman vision of cameras becomes a key element of football officiating. Referees sometimes wait while faraway reviewers evaluate footage. Rather than resenting these reviews, players, coaches, and spectators anxiously await the results. Technologically generated suspense is today part of the game.

Baseball is reticent to adopt these changes. Although the camera superimposes a strike zone to show where pitches go, plate umpires call the game as they wish. There is now some technical reviewing at bases and foul lines, but for the most part, bad calls—like bad bounces—are part of the game. All this makes the affair personal, charming, and unpredictable; but it disregards the contemporary belief that technological judgment is superior to human judgment.

Like many societies, we Americans have a taste for spectacle. But we like those spectacles to be focused, explosive, predictable, and technologically abetted. By such criteria, football wins the game.

My love for soccer started when I was 3 years old. My father started me into it and he played his whole life all the way through high school and is even still playing to today. For as long as I can remember I was always the smallest player on the team. I never had the best skill. I never scored any goals. But | always had fun playing with friends. My father coached me for every team i was on until I played with a different coach, and that changed my whole life and the way I played.

With my dad coaching me and me always being the smallest on the team, I didn’t get much better because my dad was always really nice to me and I always played the same position. He didn’t push me to become better the way I wished he did. When I started playing with more of my friends on the other team, I played positions | have never played before. I didn’t like it at first because I always stayed in the same position and never played anywhere else, but after a couple weeks it started to get really fun.

With playing on this new team and playing with different players I learned that I was good at other positions and I didn’t always have to play the same position. My coach always pushed us to become better than we already were. One of his main goals for us was to improve our skill to make the high school soccer team. When joined his team he was coaching a recreational team, and always wanted us to become better to make a higher team like Select or Premier. That is why I decided to join. He always found ways to our practices fun. Every year he would have candy hanging and in the corners of the goal.

Whichever thing we hit when we shot the ball is what we got to keep. So I practiced and practiced weeks before leven knew we would do that, just to get better to get some candy. Joining that team was one of the best decisions for my soccer career. The next year my coach and my father coached a Select team. That team that we made was not good at all, but the memories that were made were unforgettable. During the season we did not win one of our games. The best game we had was we tied 0-0 and we got lucky. The next year we ended up bringing together one of the most successful teams I have played on.

We had so many talented players, and I was nowhere near close to how good they were. I was probably one of the worst players on the team. My father once told me a story. In his Junior year he made the varsity team. He was the only Junior on the team, and the rest were seniors. All of the seniors were way better than his but the coach brought him on the team because he saw potential in him. By the end of the year he improved so much, he was just as good as the seniors. I thought about this while playing on this team. Instead of thinking myself as the worst player on the team, I thought of myself as the best ones to improve.

By the end of that yearl improved significantly in my defensive and offensive skill. The next year was my freshman year and I was going to tryout for the JV team. I thought to myself that I didn’t think that I could make it because I heard that Camas Soccer team was very hard to make it into, but I was going to try my hardest. Tryouts were in the morning before school and it was freezing. Walking out onto the field as seeing all of the best Varsity players warming up was just great so see. I was wishing that one day I could be as good as them. I did not do very good. I was cut the first morning.

I was hoping to make it farther than | did but there was way more competition than I expected. So I tried even harder to make it the next year. The next year. became much better, I tried really hard to stand out to the coaches. I should have been cut that morning but the coaches wanted to see more of me. So the next afternoon I showed up and didn’t know what to expect. I just heard a few things from my friends. I knew for a fact that I was better than some of the freshman this year. I successfully made it past the first day without being cut. The next day I showed up and we did some 1 on 1 things and I wasn’t great at that.

At the end of tryouts that day the coaches pulled me aside along with a few other people. They told me that my skill wasn’t there. I wasn’t good enough to make it on the team. After that I realized something I am still going to be playing on another team, The Screaming Eagles. This team was made of some guys from my high school. Most of them have not played for at least of 5 years. Then I thought to myself I will still have fun on this team. After that season on the fun team I was glad I didn’t make the high school team because it isn’t about how good the team is that you play on it’s how much fun and the memories you make while playing.

My favourite hobby is to watch football matches from every national or international tournament I can. I'm used to do it every day! It's an enormous pleasure! I've been doing it since I was a child. My dad took me to a football match for the first time when I was 1 year old. I normally play at the futsal court called "Arena VG" at my neighbourhood and sometimes at the club I work. With me usually are playing eather my friends and/or my work mates. I love every single moment of football. Since the preparation weeks to the match day. My favourite hobby is definitely football. I love watching and playing football regularly. I have been playing football since I was 7. My favourite team is Manchester United just like Niyati. We often play once or twice a week with my local team in Izmir. We play in the local pitch in Kültür Park in Alsancak. Our local team has players from different countries in the world as we have players from Egypt , England , Germany , Jordan , Italy , Netherlands , Nigeria , Romania , Russia , Saudi Arabia and Turkey for sure so we are an international team. Yes, that's right! It is very cool that you know that. We love cricket here in India - but football has become very popular in the last 10 years. We now have many more places to play football and we are all watching football on TV. We also have a new football league here with international players in our teams. That has been our biggest growth.

My friend used to spend his vacation in Indian state Kerala several times, so he told me a lot about India and I know many interesting things about your county from him. He loves India very much. In Ukraine football is the most popular sport, and I think that the box is the second most popular. Basketball and swimming are although very popular. Ukrainian national team is not very successful in “classic” football, but it has a success in alternative variants of football such as futsal and beach soccer.

I have a very close friend from Ukraine and he tells me the same, that there are many people playing futsal and he's grown up playing it too. Thank you so much for sharing and taking an interest in my beautiful country! I hope one day you can visit India to play some football ;) and I hope I can do the same.

What Solar Eclipse-Gazing Has Looked Like for the Past 2 Centuries

Millions of people on Monday will continue the tradition of experiencing and capturing solar eclipses, a pursuit that has spawned a lot of unusual gear.

For centuries, people have been clamoring to glimpse solar eclipses. From astronomers with custom-built photographic equipment to groups huddled together with special glasses, this spectacle has captivated the human imagination.

Creating a Permanent Record

In 1860, Warren de la Rue captured what many sources describe as the first photograph of a total solar eclipse . He took it in Rivabellosa, Spain, with an instrument known as the Kew Photoheliograph . This combination of a telescope and camera was specifically built to photograph the sun.

Forty years later, Nevil Maskelyne, a magician and an astronomy enthusiast, filmed a total solar eclipse in North Carolina. The footage was lost, however, and only released in 2019 after it was rediscovered in the Royal Astronomical Society’s archives.

Telescopic Vision

For scientists and astronomers, eclipses provide an opportunity not only to view the moon’s umbra and gaze at the sun’s corona, but also to make observations that further their studies. Many observatories, or friendly neighbors with a telescope, also make their instruments available to the public during eclipses.

Fredrik Hjalmar Johansen, Fridtjof Nansen and Sigurd Scott Hansen observing a solar eclipse while on a polar expedition in 1894 .

Women from Wellesley College in Massachusetts and their professor tested out equipment ahead of their eclipse trip (to “catch old Sol in the act,” as the original New York Times article phrased it) to New London, Conn., in 1922.

A group from Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania traveled to Yerbaniz, Mexico, in 1923, with telescopes and a 65-foot camera to observe the sun’s corona .

Dr. J.J. Nassau, director of the Warner and Swasey Observatory at Case School of Applied Science in Cleveland, prepared to head to Douglas Hill, Maine, to study an eclipse in 1932. An entire freight car was required to transport the institution’s equipment.

Visitors viewed a solar eclipse at an observatory in Berlin in the mid-1930s.

A family set up two telescopes in Bar Harbor, Maine, in 1963. The two children placed stones on the base to help steady them.

An astronomer examined equipment for an eclipse in a desert in Mauritania in June 1973. We credit the hot climate for his choice in outfit.

Indirect Light

If you see people on Monday sprinting to your local park clutching pieces of paper, or with a cardboard box of their head, they are probably planning to reflect or project images of the solar eclipse onto a surface.

Cynthia Goulakos demonstrated a safe way to view a solar eclipse , with two pieces of cardboard to create a reflection of the shadowed sun, in Lowell, Mass., in 1970.

Another popular option is to create a pinhole camera. This woman did so in Central Park in 1963 by using a paper cup with a small hole in the bottom and a twin-lens reflex camera.

Amateur astronomers viewed a partial eclipse, projected from a telescope onto a screen, from atop the Empire State Building in 1967 .

Back in Central Park, in 1970, Irving Schwartz and his wife reflected an eclipse onto a piece of paper by holding binoculars on the edge of a garbage basket.

Children in Denver in 1979 used cardboard viewing boxes and pieces of paper with small pinholes to view projections of a partial eclipse.

A crowd gathered around a basin of water dyed with dark ink, waiting for the reflection of a solar eclipse to appear, in Hanoi, Vietnam, in 1995.

Staring at the Sun (or, How Not to Burn Your Retinas)

Eclipse-gazers have used different methods to protect their eyes throughout the years, some safer than others .

In 1927, women gathered at a window in a building in London to watch a total eclipse through smoked glass. This was popularized in France in the 1700s , but fell out of favor when physicians began writing papers on children whose vision was damaged.

Another trend was to use a strip of exposed photographic film, as seen below in Sydney, Australia, in 1948 and in Turkana, Kenya, in 1963. This method, which was even suggested by The Times in 1979 , has since been declared unsafe.

Solar eclipse glasses are a popular and safe way to view the event ( if you use models compliant with international safety standards ). Over the years there have been various styles, including these large hand-held options found in West Palm Beach, Fla., in 1979.

Parents and children watched a partial eclipse through their eclipse glasses in Tokyo in 1981.

Slimmer, more colorful options were used in Nabusimake, Colombia, in 1998.

In France in 1999.

And in Iran and England in 1999.

And the best way to see the eclipse? With family and friends at a watch party, like this one in Isalo National Park in Madagascar in 2001.

Florida football DL Cam Jackson slimming down to try to make impact for UF in 2024

Florida football defensive tackle Cam Jackson was an effective run stuffer inside for the Gators in 2023 with 32 tackles and half of a tackle for loss in 11 games.

The 6-foot-6 Jackson also used this wingspan to his advantage with two pass breakups last season for the Florida Gators. But after a season with no sacks, Jackson decided he needed to change his body to improve his quickness off the snap.

Last season, Jackson played at 360 pounds. After reporting at 374 pounds before the start of spring drills, Jackson said he's down to 355 pounds thanks to the guidance of new strength coach Tyler Miles and new assistant strength coach/director of nutrition Jake Sankal.

"By the spring game, I’m trying to be like 345,” Jackson said.

Jackson said ideally, he'd like to play at 330-335 pounds next season.

"I feel like that’ll be good for me," Jackson said. "Coach (Billy) Napier, he (would say) 340 probably, but I’m challenging myself to get down to 335-330, so I can have a great season.”

How is Florida football defensive lineman Cam Jackson losing the weight?

Jackson said he's taken a more disciplined approach to his diet.

"Eating what I want to eat, I had to change that a lot," Jackson said. "I started drinking a whole lot of water and really just doing extra. Like not eating out, late night."

Fast food, Jackson said, was replaced with grilled food.

"I’m feeling much better," Jackson said. "I’m playing much better. It feels good just because with the nutrition, we’ve got a plan with me just following that and following their steps."

Jackson and Desmond Watson, who played at 435 pounds last season, provided mass inside for UF. Watson, who finished with a tackle for loss and a sack last season, was listed at 464 pounds before the start of spring drills.

"We have a great support staff here, nutrition, strength and conditioning," Florida defensive line coach Gerald Chatman said. "We all communicate. We have a plan for those guys and they have been meeting the expectations. We have a set goal for them every week that they have to follow or there is discipline for those guys."

Why Florida football DL Cam Jackson came back for a fifth season

A transfer from Memphis, Jackson could have left UF last season as a fourth-year senior. He had invitations to play in the Senior Bowl and East West Shine Bowl.

Instead, Jackson opted to take advantage of his COVID year and play one more season at UF. Jackson said UF finishing 5-7 and losing five in a row to close the 2023 season factored into his decision.

"It was a bad taste in all of our mouths," Jackson said. "So, me coming back, I feel like there’s really improvement for all of us. I could have left and went on to the Reese’s Senior Bowl or East West Shrine Bowl but me coming back to play with all of them guys, we feel like we have unfinished business to take care of.”

Was it basketball or a party? Either way, Phoenix needs more games like this

Opinion: phoenix won big with an all-star basketball game showcasing historically black colleges during the final four. why not do the same with football.

The HBCU All-Star Game at Grand Canyon University was either a basketball game or a party, depending upon whom you ask.

Either version would be accurate, and it has me convinced that Black Phoenix needs to come together to do it again — but with a football game. When we take care of our own communities, it boosts the entire state.

“Everything was first class in Phoenix,” said Travis L. Williams, the force behind the hoops showcase that doubled as a massive community service project.

The DJs inside Global Credit Union Arena and outside at the business fair on the lawn blasted tunes Sunday from Cameo and Chic to Soul For Real and SWV, karaoke hits that Black folks, such as myself, know from Saturday morning chores and road trips in the backseats of our parents’ cars.

The game was the culmination of a week of events that included homeless outreach, a renovation project at Grant Park, and a Historically Black College and University school fair at Phoenix College.

Why Arizona must showcase HBCUs now

It all served to give Arizona students a chance to consider being educated at a school that highlights Black people's history of overcoming oppression and obstacles on our journey to the American Dream.

“HBCU's have a strong record of accepting students who don’t come from affluent backgrounds, who don’t have the same educational opportunities early on … events like this shed light on educational opportunities that are out there for Black youth,” said Eboni “Muse” Johnson, visual artist and creative behind the storytelling series “Centered.”

It’s particularly important as states led by conservatives are pushing to erase Black history from K-12 schools with a distorted fight against critical race theory . 

Johnson graduated from Jackson State University and said, “Going to an HBCU allowed me to see that intraculturally, we’re super-duper diverse. … It taught me that there is no one way to be Black. We are not a monolith. We have unique experiences to share and paths to walk.”

We should do it again ... with football

In much of the nation, HBCUs are known for football “classics,” something like bowl games for schools that started forming before the Civil War by abolitionists who wanted to train Black people to educate themselves, even when it was illegal to do so in much of the nation at the time.

Johnson grew up with the Capital City Classic, which is also known as the Soul Bowl, in Jackson, Miss. There’s the Bayou Classic and the Circle City Classic. But what about a new classic in Arizona?

Call it the Bass Reeves Classic, in a nod to our state’s legacy of Black cowboys? Or the Western Classic, since there aren’t any undergraduate HBCU campuses this side of Texas? Or, as a friend and colleague recently suggested to me in a meeting, “The Jerry Rice Classic.”

“That would be amazing," said Latasha Causey, president of the Phoenix Raceway. “The Jerry Rice HBCU Classic at Phoenix Raceway. It just sounds right. Right? It rolls right off the tongue. Let’s put it out there. You know, you put it out there, sometimes things just happen.”

Rice played at Mississippi Valley State on the way to becoming the greatest football player to ever pull on a helmet. (I once suggested to Larry Fitzgerald that his resume compared favorably to Rice’s. Fitz wasn’t having it. He looked at me like he wanted to stuff me in a locker.)

Assuming Rice is on board, Phoenix has everything necessary to pull the game off.

Phoenix Raceway is open to playing a game

First, we have plenty of potential venues, starting with Phoenix Raceway.

“We have not done it before in Phoenix,” Causey said. “But I do know that we have done it before at other raceways. My good friend Erik Moses (executive director and CEO of the Fiesta Bowl), when he ran the Nashville Superspeedway, he had a game in his infield.

“We would be open to doing something like that here in Phoenix, for sure. We have about 700 acres of land at Phoenix Raceway, so we don’t just do NASCAR events here. Our facility is open 200 days a year.”

Causey pointed up the necessity for a driver, so to speak.

“We have the location. We have the facility. We have the things we need to make sure it’s a great experience, but we would need the individuals to make it happen, to plan it, to raise capital, to put some money behind it,” she said. “We would need the right professionals to make it happen.”

That shouldn’t be too high of a barrier, however. We’ve got a strong community of Black leaders in Phoenix.  

“We would stand behind that 100 percent,” said Bishop Anthony Holt, president of the Arizona NAACP.

“We would put our money behind our mouths and our bodies behind our actions,” he said. “Everything that says what we are as NAACP, we would put into our energy toward making that happen.”   

Leaders recognize the potential of HBCUs

And remember, HBCUs aren’t solely for Black students any more than BYU is only for Latter-day Saints or Notre Dame is exclusive to Catholics.

About 1 in 4 HBCU students is non-Black. The schools are open to anyone who qualifies academically, and the engineers, scientists and other professionals they put into the workforce contribute to the national economy.

Why Arizona lacks: Historically Black colleges

Leaders across the state seemed to recognize the potential impact of introducing Arizona to HBCU graduates.

“There was so much love here from Gov. Hobbs to Mayor Kate Gallego … from everybody,” Williams said. “All the local leaders, the pastors. Everybody has treated us well here. It was evident when everybody came to the game.”

About 7,500 people attended the game Sunday. It’s all but certain that the weather will entice some of them to relocate here from congested and snowbound cities in the East and Midwest. A football game would promise about three times that many fans.

'The only thing left ... is to do it'

Local businesses saw an immediate boost from the basketball game.

“For the Black business community in Phoenix, this means support, celebration and community,” Ali Nervis said. Nervis is an entrepreneur who’s involved in Grassrootz Bookstore, Straw & Wool haberdashery and Archwood Exchange business marketplace.

He was fully behind an annual football classic.

“I think that’s a tremendous idea,” Nervis said. “I think the only thing left to it is to do it.”

I think he’s right.

It would be a football game or a party, depending upon whom you ask.
