While it’s not APA-accredited, the program was structured to meet the requirements for licensure in California, so even though it’s accessible to students everywhere, California’s rules were top of mind when the program was designed. A doctoral project is also required, which could come in the form of a dissertation or another research project.

Is a Hybrid Program Right for You?

While a program that can be completed partially online is attractive for many, a few considerations are crucial before making your decision, including:

• Accreditation: None of the schools that offer programs mostly or entirely online are accredited by the American Psychological Association. This is meaningful for those who want to earn professional licensure, as some states do not confer licenses to those who don’t have APA-accredited Psy.D. degrees. Be sure to find out what the rules are in the state where you plan to practice before investing your time and money.
• Internship: Similarly, every state requires prospective psychologists to have postdoctoral (and usually predoctoral) internship experience, meaning that if the degree can be completed entirely online, it likely will not meet state requirements for supervised professional experience. These requirements range from about 1,500 hours up to 4,000.
• Dissertation: Many but not all Psy.D. programs require a dissertation or other major research project. If you’re considering a hybrid Psy.D. education, be sure to verify that you’ll be able to get the hands-on guidance and support you need to craft and defend your dissertation.

Hybrid Doctoral Program

Hybrid students have the opportunity to blend the richness of being a student at MSU with ongoing opportunities through their current work as educators. Hybrid students live in locations across the United States and around the world, and typically work while also completing their doctoral studies.

Hybrid students are encouraged to avail themselves of one or more opportunities to experience the MSU campus environment, by visiting campus at a time that is most beneficial for the advancement of their program goals. This may include attending part or all of a course in person, participating in research with one’s advisor, or taking advantage of other on-campus activities. Hybrid students engage in classroom, research, and social activities alongside their peers in the On-campus mode, who attend in-person on MSU’s campus. Hybrid students are not eligible for guaranteed funding, though hybrid students may be considered for teaching or research assistantships, as their schedules and available funding allows.  

Hybrid students typically enroll in 1-2 courses (3-6 credit hours) per semester in Fall, Spring, and Summer.

The main difference between a doctorate of psychology (PsyD) program and a doctorate of philosophy (PhD) program is the training emphasis. 

PsyD programs are focused on training graduates to become clinicians and focus heavily on clinical work. By contrast, a PhD program in clinical psychology prepares graduates to become scientist-practitioners and places more emphasis on research. 

While PsyD programs were developed in response to the concern that PhD in psychology graduates weren’t prepared for clinical practice, technically, both PhD and PsyD programs can prepare someone for work as a practicing psychologist.  A student with an earned PhD in clinical psychology who wishes to earn licensure as a psychologist may have to complete licensure requirements independently of the program. Supervised Clinical Hour Requirements & Internships – Online Doctorate in (Clinical) Psychology

Gaining licensure to practice independently as a mental health clinician or psychologist requires professionals to complete a certain threshold of supervised work hours under a licensed clinician. 

For example, in California , applicants for licensure as a psychologist must have completed at least 3,000 supervised professional experience hours, 1,500 of which must be completed post-doctorally. Whether or not an online PhD in clinical psychology program requires supervised hours and internships depends on whether the program is a licensure preparation program. 

Some clinically-focused PhD programs are designed for already-licensed or pre-licensed mental health professionals looking for expanded leadership opportunities, deeper disciplinary skills and knowledge, entry into professorship, or the desire to add to the lexicon of research in the clinical psychology arena. These programs often clearly state that the program is not designed to help with licensure. If an internship is offered, it will often be optional. Any desired supervised clinical hours must be pursued individually and outside the course sequence.

Online PhD programs in psychology that prepare students as much as possible for licensure will weave supervised clinical hours and internship experiences into the course sequence. Some online PhDs in psychology allow students to find supervisors for internships and practicum experiences nearby, while others require online students to choose from a curated list or relocate for the duration of the internship.

Program Accreditation for Online PhD Programs in (Clinical) Psychology

At its most basic level, accreditation is a sign that universities are providing educational interventions that adhere to certain standards for quality and practical relevance. To earn accreditation, universities submit to being evaluated by a third-party accrediting organization whose central purpose is to determine whether or not the university is adhering to these standards. 

Prospective students interested in applying to PhD programs in psychology should ensure that the institutions they’re applying to are accredited at either the regional or national level by accrediting organizations recognized by the Department of Education (DOE) or Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) .

At a programmatic level, the American Psychology Association (APA) has long been considered the gold standard for programmatic accreditation for doctoral-level programs in psychology. In addition to being a benchmark for quality instruction, some states require that psychology professionals graduate from an APA-accredited program in order to pursue licensure to practice. 

At the time of this writing, however, the APA does not accredit online-only PhD doctoral programs , stating, “Some accredited programs may offer online courses or other content via distance education in an adjunctive role. These courses cannot represent a substantial nature of program content and certain classes (e.g., practicum) are not considered appropriate for this instructional method. Any online courses in accredited programs should be noted as such in public materials.” 

As a result, APA accreditation generally only occurs for hybrid or blended programs that include a minimum threshold of on-campus or in-person requirements. 

A prospective clinical psychology PhD applicant must understand how the APA figures into their state’s licensure requirements and whether or not the universities without APA recognition help students to gain the skills necessary for licensure.

Fielding Graduate University (Hybrid)

Fielding Graduate University offers a hybrid online and in-person clinical psychology PhD program that aims to create a more humane, just, and sustainable world by creating programming accessible to students from underrepresented populations and by graduating students who bring values of social and ecological justice to their work. 

Fielding offers the only distributed learning program accredited by the APA. Students enrolled in the 179-credit program earn a pathway master’s after the first two years of study. They can choose a concentration in forensic psychology, health psychology, neuropsychology, or social justice and diversity. 

On-campus requirements in this program include a weeklong orientation and two weeklong residencies in the program’s first two years. Some concentrations and seminars require additional on-campus presence as well. Students are also required to complete 600 residency hours, 1,500 practicum hours, and a 1,520-hour, one-year internship in the terminal year of the program that may require relocation to complete. 

Coursework in the program includes cognitive assessment, history and systems of psychology, biological bases of behavior, and multicultural psychology. No GRE scores are required to apply, and students without a master’s degree can also apply to Fielding.

Lesley University (Hybrid)

Lesley University offers a low-residency PhD in expressive therapies designed for experienced art therapy professionals looking to advance in higher education or transition to leadership in the art therapy discipline. 

Coursework in the 45-credit program includes a series of residency experiences and doctoral seminars covering philosophical foundations of expressive art therapies, leadership in art therapy, ethics, teaching and research in higher education, and the explorations of the contextual framework for research questions. Students must attend one three-week summer intensive residency in Cambridge each year for the program’s first three years. 

A program for working art therapists, Lesley’s program requires applicants to have a master’s degree from a regionally accredited institution, certification or registration in at least one expressive therapy modality, GRE or MAT scores, and a minimum of three years of professional experience working as an expressive therapist.

Northcentral University (Online)

Northcentral University offers a 100 percent online 60-credit PhD in psychology that is designed for licensed and pre-licensed mental health professionals who have an earned clinical master’s degree that included a practicum or internship. Students enrolled in the program can choose between ten available specializations, including addictions, the psychology of gender and sexual fluidity, general psychology, gerontology, health psychology, industrial organizational psychology, mental health policy, and practice, trauma and disaster relief, counseling psychology, and counseling psychology (California licensure track). 

With the exception of the counseling psychology (California licensure track), none of Northcentral’s programs are specifically designed to prepare students for licensure and do not provide any internship, practicum, or residency opportunities. The CA licensure track prepares PhD graduates only for the academic requirements needed for licensure in the state, and students will need to organize clinical requirements for licensure independently. 

Coursework across the programs includes research design planning, tests and measurements, scholarly writing and professional communication in psychology, and advanced qualitative and quantitative analysis and design. No GRE scores are required to apply. Those with master’s degrees outside of psychology, mental health counseling, marriage and family therapy, or social work may have to complete additional coursework before starting their PhD coursework.

Saybrook University (Hybrid)

Saybrook University offers a hybrid online/in-person PhD in clinical psychology program that provides the coursework requirements to become a licensed clinical psychologist in 13 states. 

Students in the 108-credit program can enroll in one of four 15-credit specializations in consciousness, spirituality, and integrative health; creativity studies; existential and humanistic psychology, or psychophysiology. 

On-campus requirements for the program include a two-day residential orientation, two five-day residential conferences per year, and one optional three-day intensive midterm residential conference. Students enrolled in the program must complete a 600-hour minimum practicum over two semesters and a 12- to 24-month internship with a minimum of 1,500 clinical training hours. 

Coursework in the program includes ethics and laws in psychotherapy and behavioral science research, the psychology of multiculturalism in North America, social psychology, and integrative health psychology: the application of psychological concepts and tools to health. 

Students who enroll in the Saybrook program with a bachelor’s degree can earn a master’s degree on the way to the PhD. Although Saybrook is not an APA-accredited program, the program can be adjusted to meet APA equivalency in the student’s intended state of practice. GRE/MAT scores are not required to apply but can be submitted to strengthen an application.

Walden University (Hybrid)

Walden University offers a hybrid online/in-person PhD in clinical psychology that prepares students to become practitioners, faculty members, consultants, administrators, or researchers. Walden’s blended learning approach prepares students to qualify to sit for psychology licensing exams by meeting the academic requirements stipulated by some state psychology boards. 

Students enrolled in this program will be expected to complete at least two of the four required four-day residencies in a face-to-face format, and will also need to complete one academic year in residence in the sixth through ninth quarters of the program. The year-in-residence program combines online coursework with face-to-face experiences in Minneapolis. 

Students enrolled in the 143-quarter-credit program can choose to pursue a general program or specialize in forensic psychology, health, industrial and organizational psychology, or teaching. Coursework in the program includes psychopathology from a clinical perspective, interpersonal psychotherapy, psychology and social change, and cognitive and affective bases of behavior. After completing a two-course practicum, students are also expected to complete four internship courses that help them to gain 2,000 supervised clinical clock hours, 900 of which must be direct client contact hours. GRE/MAT scores are not required to apply to Walden.

Graduation Requirements

• Students who enter with a Bachelor’s degree must complete 133 credits (1080 hours) of which 25 credits are from fieldwork (750 hours).
• Students who enter the program with a qualified Master’s degree (Advanced Standing) must complete 117 credits (920 hours) of which 25 credits are from fieldwork (750 hours).
• The completion of an original research Dissertation is required.
• Students have a maximum of eight (8) years from their initial date of enrollment to complete this degree.
• Doctoral students must complete 60 hours of personal exploration in a psychotherapeutic process.

Admission Requirements

• A Bachelor's degree is required for admission to Meridian's graduate degree programs.
• Students submit an online application form along with documents such as official transcripts, a personal statement, and letters of recommendation. The Admissions Committee reviews all applications and invites select applicants to proceed to an interview. More information is available on the Application Process page.
• All students are expected to be proficient in the English language as all instruction at Meridian is offered in English.

Academic Structure

Meridian’s academic structure gives students the flexibility to navigate the University’s curricular architecture in ways that match their passions, professional goals, and other life commitments.

The structure is designed to serve a diverse student body, who live around the globe, have varied cultural and clinical visions for their careers, and are at different stages in their professional journey.

Students enroll in a degree program, can elect a concentration, and register for one or multiple courses each quarter. In addition to core courses for the specific degree program and anchor courses that represent the Transformative Learning intent of Meridian’s curriculum, students select elective courses that align with their Meridian concentration, background, and career path.

Learning Formats

Meridian's graduate degree programs are offered in two formats, Hybrid and Online. Each quarter, students take one or multiple seven-week online courses. This schedule provides students with time between quarters to rest, engage, and prepare.

The University's multiple format options are designed to enable students to pursue their graduate education at a flexible pace, combining asynchronous coursework via the University's custom social learning platform, live course video calls with faculty, synchronous student community engagement, and optional onsite or online Transformative Learning Labs in-person.

Students can optionally select Transformative Learning Lab dates, locations, and formats based on their learning style, personal interests, and professional aspirations, if they choose to, based on availability of offerings.

Online Format

In Meridian's online learning format, students can complete 100% of their coursework degree requirements online, via Meridian’s unique online learning platform and faculty-led learning model. Meridian’s online format is designed to be highly engaging and deeply human . Students build connections with faculty and fellow graduate students while taking advantage of the flexibility built-in to the University’s online courses model.

Online Transformative Learning Labs are also optionally available (often multiple times a year), sometimes as a 3+ hour live class, and sometimes over multiple days.

Hybrid Format

Meridian’s hybrid learning format combines online courses with optional onsite Transformative Learning Labs which are one-week or less. By combining Meridian’s innovative online education methodologies with rich video calls and deep onsite connections, the hybrid format enables students to contribute locally and perceive globally.

When offered, Onsite Labs take place at Meridian’s San Francisco Bay Area Center and other University Centers, based on student interest and availability.

Fielding offers a program that focuses on the application of psychological theories and methods to such real-world settings as communities, business, industry, education, government, and the military.  It applies core knowledge found within social psychology, cognitive psychology, developmental psychology, industrial/organizational psychology, human factors, and research methods/statistics to answer student-inspired practical questions.

Fielding’s doctoral program in Psychology has a unique learning model that employs the best distance learning opportunities. Students will gain expertise by conducting psychology research at the doctoral level after securing a breadth of knowledge in the core fields of psychology, then taking a deep dive into a focal area of interest (e.g., teaching psychology). Graduates are well-suited for academic positions in colleges and universities as well as applied positions in both for-profit and nonprofit organizations. Doctorates are “terminal” qualifications. This means it is the highest degree type a student can obtain. Once achieved, you are considered an expert in your field. A doctorate in psychology can take years to complete and is focused heavily on individual research – the main project being your thesis research project. Normally, you will have completed a master’s degree before being permitted to apply for this type of program, though there are some exceptions.

There are two types of doctorates in psychology. The first is the Ph.D. (Doctor of Philosophy) in Psychology, which is suited for careers in research or academia. University at Buffalo

The University at Buffalo offers a highly competitive PhD program in Psychology, with a focus on research and clinical training. The program is housed within the Department of Psychology, located on the North Campus of the university. Students have the opportunity to work with renowned faculty in a variety of subfields, including clinical, developmental, cognitive, and social psychology.

Psychology Ph.D. programs are possible via online learning as much of the contact time with faculty and peers takes place in seminars and discussion groups – which can be done virtually. Much of the work of a Ph.D. is self-led, making an ideal environment for online work.

The main disadvantage to an online Ph.D. is the lack of direct contact and face-to-face time with peers and other doctorate students – missing the more social elements of working as a team. Also, you may need regular or semi-regular access to university facilities, which will not always be available virtually.

All Psychology Degrees

Ph.D. programs in psychology involve high-level psychology courses and research projects where the student identifies a problem or subject area they wish to investigate. Faculty are there to help and guide, but the research is completed by the student so they can become an expert on that subject.

While most of the study is independent, online psychology Ph.D. programs, as well as other types of online psychology programs include discussion groups and seminars with other students as well as one-on-one meetings.

Ph.D. students must also complete an American Psychological Association (APA) accredited yearlong psychology internship as part of the program in order to become licensed upon graduation. Typically, Ph.D. students are matched with internships through the Association of Psychology Postdoctoral and Internship Centers (APPIC) .

What Are the Psychology Ph.D. Admission Requirements?

Psychology Ph.D. applications are subject to specific evaluation and application criteria. While specific requirements may vary between schools and programs, they typically include:

• A master's degree in an applicable subject
• Academic transcript copies
• Some schools may request GRE scores
• Recommendation letters from a university professor or other academic mentor
• A resume, especially if you have experience working in the psychology field
• A research proposal detailing the problem/gap area that you wish to investigate
• An essay covering a subject related to psychology
• Non-U.S.-based applicants may be asked to formally translate their qualifications for a U.S. academic audience
• If you are applying from a country that does not speak English as a primary language, you are required to provide certification through approved programs such as IELTS, TOEFL, etc.

What Is the Length of a Psychology Ph.D. Program?

Students take many years to complete a doctorate, usually as long as a bachelor's and master's degree combined – at the very minimum. They will often take much longer, though. As there is no set time limit for completion, you may work around a career in psychology, and your family commitments, and take breaks when needed. Generally speaking, a psychology Ph.D. program will take anywhere from 5 to 8 years to complete.

The psychology Ph.D. is a terminal degree – meaning it is the highest level of qualification in any field. This means it will be more expensive than lower-level degrees. Psychology Ph.D. graduates also have the highest earning potential, which can offset the educational costs.

The average cost per year for public universities charging in-state resident students is $12,400. If you're from another state, the average cost is higher. International students are usually higher still. Private universities charge the highest at an average of $26,600 per year. However, they typically do not discriminate on grounds of locality – that is the cost to all students.

It is rare for students to fully fund their doctorate. Most programs are paid for through a combination of research grants and funding. Students will often be employed by the university as a lecturer or junior researchers to offset the cost of funding.

Scholarships are available, and some will cover the student's full living costs, research funding, and expenses associated with completing the degree.

Online/Hybrid Clinical Psychology Program

Application deadlines, why should you get this degree.

The online clinical psychology program is designed for students who are passionate about the mental health field but need the flexibility of online education. Students will have the opportunity to pursue their Masters of Science Degree in Clinical Psychology full time while it is delivered virtually. Students are only required to come to the FHSU campus for five-day workshops over two summer semesters. Although the program is required to meet licensure needs of students who will work primarily in Kansas, it is available for students residing anywhere in the United States.

INTERNSHIPS AND EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING

As a student in the clinical psychology program, you'll have the opportunity to gain extensive supervised experience in the application of mental health services. The required 15 credits of practicum and internship are designed to give you practical experience and professional skills, in addition to exposure to the organization and structure of mental health service agencies. During your second year of study, you will complete an on-site practicum where you will receive training and direct supervision. After completion of the practicum experiences, you'll complete a 600 clock-hour internship in an off-campus mental health agency under the supervision of a qualified psychologist.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE?

The online/hybrid clinical psychology program is designed to be completed in three years. The program consists of approximately four semesters of coursework, and two semesters of internship. Click here for the sequence of courses . Upon completion of the program, students graduate with a Master of Science in Psychology (Clinical Emphasis), and are eligible for licensure in Kansas.

Program graduates have been very successful in securing employment in community mental health centers, psychiatric hospitals, and various types of treatment facilities. The Behavioral Sciences Regulatory Board  licenses Master's level psychologists in the state of Kansas.

The Psychology PhD degree program offers advanced study and research training for students seeking to become leading scientists and scholars in the field

The Psychology PhD degree program offers advanced study and research training for students seeking to become leading scientists and scholars in the field. The program encompasses a wide array of specialty areas within psychology, including developmental, cognitive, social and personality psychology, and spans the study of both healthy and clinical populations from infancy through older adulthood.

From the start of their training, doctoral students in psychology work closely in research laboratories with faculty mentors. Although the department is highly interdisciplinary, there are three primary areas of research focus:

• Developmental psychology, which spans topics in children’s social-emotional, cognitive, and language development;
• Cognitive psychology, including topics in traditional cognitive psychology such as attention, motivation, perception, learning and memory, and face perception ranging from basic science perspectives to applied approaches including interventions to improve cognitive function.
• Social and personality psychology, including work focused on cultural differences in socio-emotional processing, moral decision making, the formation and evolution of interpersonal relationships between romantic partners and friends, and research on health disparities.

In addition, a number of research labs conduct research with implications for clinical science, including the effects of stress on health, adolescent mood disorders, and social cognition in autism and schizophrenia populations. We also offer strong training in advanced statistical techniques critical for psychology research including courses on dyadic group analyses, longitudinal growth curve modeling, multilevel modeling, and advanced multivariate analyses.

Doctoral students in psychology benefit from a rich intellectual climate at the School of Behavioral and Brain Sciences (BBS), including weekly lectures and research presentations by students, faculty, and visiting scholars. The school hosts an annual colloquium series presented by internationally known scientists, and its four research centers periodically offer symposia and workshops that are freely available to doctoral students. Doctoral students receive funding support for presenting their research at professional meetings and conducting their dissertation research. Finally, doctoral students are provided with a variety of other professional development experiences, including opportunities to develop their teaching skills.

The BBS offices and research facilities are located on the Richardson campus and in centers located in Dallas near the campus of the UT Southwestern Medical Center. Facilities at all locations include classrooms and research laboratories for studies of neuroscience, psychology and communication across the lifespan in both typical and clinical populations.

The PhD program in psychology offers exceptional research facilities on the Richardson campus, including state-of-the-art laboratories equipped for studies of event-related potentials, eye tracking, infant visual and auditory preferences, child learning and development, parent-child interactions and adult interpersonal relationships. In addition, the school’s Center for Children and Families , housed at the Callier Center-Richardson location, offers an array of clinical and community outreach activities organized around three main initiatives: promoting healthy families, strengthening interpersonal relationships and enhancing children’s thinking and learning. Partnerships with area hospitals, clinics, agencies and schools further expand student research opportunities. Students also benefit from working with faculty mentors in the Center for BrainHealth and the Center for Vital Longevity.

Degree Requirements

The PhD program in psychology requires a minimum of 75 semester credit hours beyond the baccalaureate degree. Students declare a concentration in developmental psychology, cognitive psychology or social/personality psychology. Students are expected to complete the program coursework and research requirements in four to five years. The research requirements include a qualifying thesis research project and a dissertation research project. Students work collaboratively with their faculty mentor and committee to successfully complete all program milestone projects.

The psychology admissions committee evaluates applications using a holistic review, which includes prior GPA, letters of recommendation, quantitative and verbal scores for the Graduate Record Exam (GRE), and a close examination of the statement of purpose. Admission is contingent on a match between the research interests of the applicant and faculty. Applicants are strongly encouraged to identify faculty with similar research interests and to contact them about current opportunities for admission.

Typically, applicants have an average undergraduate cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above, and completion of an undergraduate degree in a related major is advisable. Completion of a master’s degree is not required. Applicants without a prior degree in psychology should contact the program head for prerequisite coursework.

Applications to the PhD program must include official transcripts, GRE scores, three letters of reference from people qualified to evaluate your potential for successful doctoral study, and a statement of purpose detailing your previous research and professional experiences, your current research interests, and your career goals. The statement of purpose is an extremely important part of your application.

International applicants must provide proof of English proficiency via TOEFL, IELTS, or PTE meeting University minimum requirements.

* GRE scores waived for Fall 2022-24 applicants. Submission of GRE scores (general or subject tests) are optional.

The Office of Graduate Education and the Office of Admission and Enrollment at The University of Texas at Dallas are pleased to offer a Graduate Application Fee Waiver Program to  qualified participants  (past or present). To qualify, students must be applying for a PhD or Master’s degree at UT Dallas. Non-degree applicants are not eligible for fee waivers. Financial Aid

Financial support of full-time doctoral students in psychology is awarded through teaching or research assistantship stipends and tuition scholarships. Admitted students are automatically considered for teaching and research assistant positions.

UT Dallas’ main campus is located in Richardson, Texas, about 15 miles north of downtown Dallas; some of the centers of the School of Behavioral and Brain Sciences are located in Dallas, near the campus of the UT Southwestern Medical School. Both Richardson and Dallas are vibrant communities, with opportunities for art, drama, music, athletics, and other activities. Richardson and Dallas are richly diverse cities located in one of America’s largest and fastest growing metropolitan areas. The Dallas area boasts 50,000 acres of public park land, the nation’s largest urban arts district with excellent symphony, opera, and art museums, five major sports franchises, multiple entertainment districts, and a thriving culinary scene. The DART rail system runs from the suburbs of Plano and Richardson to the arts district, downtown Dallas, and DFW airport. Yes, it is hot in the summer, but the average daily temperature is 65 degrees (spring, fall, and winter are great!). The area offers a reasonable cost of living and an abundance of sunshine.

Most doctoral classes are held on the main UT Dallas campus in Richardson, but some class offerings may be held in Dallas, at the Callier Center for Communication Disorders, the Center for Brain Health, or the Center for Vital Longevity. Your duties as a teaching assistant or research assistant likely will take place on the main campus in Richardson or at one of the centers in Dallas. Because locations of classes and duties may change over semesters it can be difficult to choose a place to live. Public transportation options are improving, but because commuting by car is relatively easy, many students choose to live in areas between Richardson and Dallas. Some student housing is available on the main campus in Richardson, but on-campus housing caters primarily to undergraduates. You can use online search engines to find housing options that fit your price range and target location, and the program office can also provide information and recommendations from current doctoral students.

Applicants are strongly encouraged to contact potential mentors prior to submitting application materials. The admissions committee evaluates applications on several dimensions, including not only prior GPA and GRE scores, letters of recommendation, and personal statements, but also the fit between the research interests of the applicant and faculty, and the willingness and ability of the proposed mentor or mentoring team to accept new PhD student supervision responsibilities.

The psychology PhD program is an experimental psychology program and provides training for a career in teaching and research. Former graduates have successfully acquired university faculty positions, as well as research positions in hospitals, school systems, healthcare start-ups, and research institutes. Graduates also have worked in applied research settings, conducting program evaluation research with education and intervention programs.

No, we do not offer a clinical or counseling master’s or PhD degree.

This depends on your goals. The master’s degree is appropriate for students interested in broad psychology training beyond the undergraduate level or additional training to prepare them for applying to doctoral programs in clinical psychology and other areas of psychology. The PhD program is appropriate for students interested in careers in research and teaching and involves extensive training in research design and methodology.

These two programs have a lot in common. There is overlap in the coursework of these programs and many of the faculty members are involved with both programs. The psychology program allows for broader training in psychology; students can select a concentration in developmental psychology, cognitive psychology, or social/personality psychology. The cognition and neuroscience program focuses more narrowly on cognitive psychology or neuroscience. One way to decide what program may be best for you is to think about what type of department you see yourself affiliated with in the future and which degree best serves your career goals.

Victor M. Mukhin was born in 1946 in the town of Orsk, Russia. In 1970 he graduated the Technological Institute in Leningrad. Victor M. Mukhin was directed to work to the scientific-industrial organization "Neorganika" (Elektrostal, Moscow region) where he is working during 47 years, at present as the head of the laboratory of carbon sorbents.     Victor M. Mukhin defended a Ph. D. thesis and a doctoral thesis at the Mendeleev University of Chemical Technology of Russia (in 1979 and 1997 accordingly).
