Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that Little Red Wagon is a 2013 movie inspired by the activism of a young Florida boy named Zach Bonner, who collected supplies for those who lost their homes in the aftermath of Hurricane Charley, and then later dedicated his time and efforts to helping homeless children and calling attention to their plight. The biggest concern for parents is the side story in which a mother and her young son lose their home and have no choice but to sleep in their car, dumpster-dive, and shoplift from a grocery store; while intended to provide a concrete example of the tragedy of homelessness, some of the scenes -- including one in which the young boy injures his arm while dumpster-diving -- could be too intense for younger viewers. Also, some of the shouted arguments between the mother and teen daughter could be difficult for some. Finally, during one scene in which Zach and his mother are in the middle of their walk to Tallahassee from Tampa to raise awareness about child homelessness, Zach vomits on the side of the road. Otherwise, this film is an inspirational story of what one person can do to try and make the world a better place, and should lead to thoughtful discussions about activism in our society. Such an inspiring true story!!!

What's the story.

In the aftermath of Hurricane Charley, a young boy named Zach Bonner is moved to help those who lost their homes from the hurricane in communities south of his Tampa home. With a little red wagon and help from his teen sister Kelley, Zach collects supplies from everyone in his neighborhood. When he and his sister collect much more than they anticipated, Zach begins to reach out to the other neighborhoods around him for help. Zach's efforts begin to garner local media attention, and Zach begins to realize that his efforts are merely the beginning. With help from his mother, he creates a charity dedicated to ease the pain and raise awareness about homeless children. With larger donations and help from bigger corporations, they collect "Zach Bags," book bags for homeless kids that are packed with toys, books, and practical items. As his charity and cause continue to grow, Zach's mother and Kelley are starting to fight more and more, as Kelley wants to have more of a personal life. Meanwhile, Zach conceives of an idea: Walk from Tampa to the state capital of Tallahassee as a way to promote awareness of the difficulties faced by homeless children. It takes some persuading, but Zach's family comes around and does their best to help him in his nearly three-hundred-mile walk, despite the physical difficulties of the journey, as well as inter-family arguments along the way.

Is It Any Good?

LITTLE RED WAGON is a well-done movie. It was inspired by the true story of Zach Bonner, whose Little Red Wagon charity grew from modest beginnings into a nationally recognized advocate for homeless children. The film manages to show and discuss the growth of young Zach's efforts without being preachy or heavy-handed, and also shows, through a moving side-story involving a mother and her young son who lost everything and are trying to survive by sleeping in their car and homeless shelters, the vast difficulties of homelessness as well as how it really doesn't take much for those in the middle class to lose everything they have.

While the arguments between Zach's mother and his teenage sister Kelley feel like a bit much at times, they do underscore the difficulties faced by many in balancing their desires to improve the world while having a fulfilling social and personal life. Nonetheless, for a "movie with a message," this is among the best to come out in recent years, and should inspire discussion -- and perhaps action -- amongst families about the issues they care about the most.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

Families can talk about activism. How is Zach Bonner's emerging activism conveyed in the movie? What causes are important to you?

Why do you think the side story about the mother and son who lose everything they had was included in the movie? What would have been lost had it not been in the movie?

How do the problems shown between Zach's mother and his teenage sister underscore universal problems of balancing the time to help those in need while taking care of one's own day-to-day financial and personal issues?

Little Red Wagon

Dove Review

“Little Red Wagon” will move your family from tears of hope to jubilation as they see just how much difference one person can make. We were thoroughly impressed by this simple yet heartwarming story of dedication and triumph.

During the aftermath of Hurricane Charley, a young boy named Zach Bonner is moved by the images and thoughts of local families who have lost everything. When he decides to take action, Zach and his sister walk his little red wagon around the neighborhood to collect donations of food and water for the relief victims. His simple and small act of kindness moves many to donate and he winds up delivering several van loads of supplies that are to be distributed to the needy. When his mother takes him to a Red Cross shelter to show him the impact that the donations make on displaced families, he decides to bring more media attention to the issue by walking from their home in Tampa to the Florida state capitol.

We are pleased to award our Dove “Family-Approved” Seal to this wonderful movie and encourage you to open your heart (and your generosity) to those in need in your neighborhood. You will be amazed at how much can be done with simple acts of kindness.

LITTLE RED WAGON

"how to help the homeless".

little red wagon movie review

What You Need To Know:

(BB, C, Cap, AC, L, V, M) Strong moral worldview with very light Christian content, with some pro-capitalist, pro-individual, anti-statist content; five very mild obscenities, one vomiting scene; some mild violence with discussion and news footage from Hurricane Charley’s devastation of Florida; no sex; no nudity; no drinking; no smoking; and, lying, homeless theft, and arrogant, mean-spirited government people.

More Detail:

LITTLE RED WAGON is a dramatic movie based on a true story about a young boy who becomes the youngest head of a nonprofit organization in the United States of America to help the homeless.

The movie opens with Zach Bonner and his sister, Kelley, driving home in 2004 with their mother while news says their Florida home is about to be hit by Hurricane Charley. The neighbors from across the street yell that they’re evacuating and wonder if they’re leaving too. The mother replies that they feel safer at home and have bought supplies. Miraculously, the hurricane does not hit them, but turns south and devastates a large swatch of Southern Florida.

Zach wants to do something to help the victims. He takes his little red wagon and eventually collects three truckloads of food and supplies for the homeless victims. A news reporter finds out how much he’s collected and interviews him.

The next time Zach comes back to the collection center, the government bureaucrat says he’s too young to help. His mother gets angry and says he’s already raised three truckloads. His mother takes Zach to a homeless shelter, and he decides to help the homeless on a grander scale.

Meanwhile, a neighbor becomes homeless, a mother with her son because the husband suddenly died. The movie follows Zach trying to help the homeless and the neighbor trying to survive homelessness.

There’s a lot of good filmmaking in this movie. The cinematography and technical aspects are very good. Most of the acting is good, but some is weak.

The problem is the episodic script. There are multiple, sequential villains throughout the movie, (and sometimes no villain at all!). At first, it’s man versus nature. Then, it’s Zach versus the bureaucrats. Then, it’s the daughter versus the mother. Finally, it’s Zach’s quest against nature at all odds.

LITTLE RED WAGON is worthwhile watching, but many people will lose interest because of the lack of dramatic scripting. The good news is that it clearly shows that even a little boy can do better helping the homeless than the government.

This is a film where its heart is in the right place but its execution leaves more to be desired. Even though it's from the director of Hoosiers and Rudy , it still feels like a made-for-TV movie, especially in editing and music. Partially amusing since the mom here also plays Skylar White in Breaking Bad . All the actors do well, especially Chandler Canterbury as Zach. There's no doubt the actual events were extraordinary and inspiring, just from one kid and his family wanting to make a difference in the lives of homeless families. It's too bad their depiction gets bogged down by needless family melodrama and a subplot that's really heavy-handed. Standard storytelling suffices as is. Thankfully, it's not too…

Little Red Wagon

  • With nothing more than a blazing spirit of philanthropy and his beat-up red wagon, Zach sets out to help homeless children in America. In the process, he sweeps his fractured family - and ultimately the entire country - along with him.
  • Carrot-topped 8-year-old Zach Bonner lives in Tampa with his realtor mom Laurie and teenage sister Kelley. In 2004, in the wake of Hurricane Charley, Zach uses his beat-up toy wagon to collect water, food and clothing for families left homeless by the storm. Emboldened by his success and the attention he is receiving from the local media, Zach battles bureaucratic hurdles to start his own charity, the Little Red Wagon Foundation, to produce and distribute "Zach Packs", backpacks filled with life's bare essentials, plus a toy. Zach's life intersects with that of newly widowed Margaret Craig and her young son Jim, whose hardships spiral out of control and land them in a series of homeless shelters. Suddenly, Zach gets the idea to walk from Tampa to the state capital, Tallahassee, to bring attention to the plight of homeless youth. His mother is against it; and his sister feels increasingly resentful of Zach and the attention he's getting. Zach's walk begins amid great fanfare: a rousing speech by a state senator, a throng of people who walk the first mile with Zach and his family. But it soon settles into a long slog in the dead of summer. Meanwhile, Margaret and Jim Craig, having finally wound up in a decent shelter, each find hope. Jim is given a "Zach Pack," and his spirits lift when he pulls out a yo-yo, a small gift that, for Jim, means that "Someone out there cares!" Only miles outside of Tallahassee, Zach witnesses his own family falling apart. He is about to complete the final leg of their long journey, but was it worth it? — Philanthropy Project/Zach Movie, LLC. (info@giveandglow)
