A Natural disaster is an unforeseen occurrence of an event that causes harm to society. There are many Natural disasters that damage the environment and the people living in it. Some of them are earthquakes , cyclones, floods, Tsunami , landslides, volcanic eruption, and avalanches. Spatial extent measures the degree or severity of the disaster.

Levels of Disaster

The severity or degree of damage can be further divided into three categories:

Small Scale Disasters: Small scale disasters are those that extend from 50 Kms. to 100 Kms. So this kind of disasters does not cause much damage.

Medium-scale disasters: Medium Scale disasters extend from 100 Kms to 500 Kms. These cause more damage than a small scale disaster. Moreover, they can cause greater damage if they occur in colonial states.

Large Scale Disasters: These disasters cover an area of more than 1000 Kms. These cause the most severe damage to the environment. Furthermore, these disasters can even take over a country if the degree is high. For instance, the wiping out of the dinosaurs was because of a large scale natural disaster.

Types of Disasters

Causes: These can cause of releasing of the energy. This release is from the core of the earth. Furthermore, the release of energy causes seismic waves. Rupturing of geological faults causes earthquakes. But other events like volcanic eruptions, landslides mine blasts can also cause it.

Landslides: Landslides is the moving of big boulders of rocks or debris down a slope. As a result, landslides occur on mountains and hilly areas. Moreover, landslides can cause destruction to man-made things in many ways.

Causes: Gravitational pull, volcanic eruptions , earthquakes can cause landslides. Moreover, soil erosion due to deforestation is also a cause of landslides.

Avalanches: Avalanches are like landslides. But instead of rocks thousand tons of snow falls down the slope. Moreover, this causes extreme damage to anything that comes in its way. People who live in snowy mountains always have fear of it.

Causes: Avalanches takes places when there is a large accumulation of snow on the mountains. Moreover, they can also occur from earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. Furthermore, the chances of surviving an avalanche are very less. This is because people die of hypothermia in it.

Tsunami: Tsunami is the production of very high waves in oceans and seas. Moreover, the displacement of the ground causes these high waves. A tsunami can cause floods if it occurs near shores. A Tsunami can consist of multiple waves. Moreover, these waves have a high current. Therefore it can reach coastlines within minutes. The main threat of a tsunami is if a person sees a Tsunami he cannot outrun it.

Causes: Tsunami is unlike normal eaves that occur due to the wind. But Tsunami is waves that occur by ground displacement. Thus earthquakes are the main causes of Tsunamis.

Most natural disasters are out of our control and can occur randomly. All we can do, however, is take necessary precautions as soon as we are able to predict when the disaster is going to take place. Global Warming is an important reason for all these things. Therefore, we must protect and preserve our natural environment. It is essential to warn people of upcoming disasters. A mandatory evacuation should be carried out if necessary. After the disaster, people should be provided financial help to recover from damages and losses from the disaster.

Earthquake | An earthquake is a natural event when the Earth's tectonic plates suddenly shift and cause the ground to shake. This shaking can damage buildings and other structures, as well as loss of life. Earthquakes can happen at any time and can strike without warning, making them a frightening and unpredictable phenomenon.

Cyclone | A cyclone is a type of storm characterised by a low-pressure centre and strong winds that spiral inward and upward. Cyclones are also typhoons or hurricanes, depending on the region in which they occur. Cyclones form over warm ocean waters and typically move toward land, where they can cause widespread damage and destruction. They are often accompanied by heavy rainfall and can spawn tornadoes. The destructive power of a cyclone comes from its strong winds, which can reach speeds of over 150 miles per hour. These winds can uproot trees, damage buildings, and create storm surges, large waves that can flood coastal areas.

Wildfire | A wildfire is a large, uncontrolled fire that occurs in a natural habitat, such as a forest, grassland, or prairie. Wildfires can happen due to various factors, including lightning, human activity, and extreme weather conditions. When a wildfire occurs, it can spread quickly, consuming everything in its path. Wildfires can have many adverse effects on the environment and people. For example, they can destroy homes and other buildings and critical infrastructures, such as roads and bridges. They can also cause air pollution and respiratory issues for people living in the area.

Natural disasters come in many forms; they are all dangerous and can lead to death and destruction.

Examples of natural disasters may be tornadoes, tsunamis, earthquakes, hurricanes, and many more. Natural disasters could also be famine or a shortage of food, or even a terrorist attack perhaps like 911. Each of these disasters strike in its own way. It may be with rain, big tidal waves, lighting, too much sun and no rain, or even high forced winds. Natural disasters happen at least once a year and to most of the countries surrounded by water, or in the southern part of the states. It seems as if natural disasters happen every time a season may change.

Many southern states and coastal countries or states see more disasters than other states, or dry states. Michigan has never had to deal with disasters like these, or as long as I’ve been in Michigan nothing really bad has happen. Many states in the south get tornadoes every year and more than once. I don’t think natural disasters are just nature but problems that effect large amounts of people or cause an economic crisis to fix and repair the problem that occurred. Perhaps when the twin towers were attack.

That was a crisis that affected a country as a whole, lots of people died and the city was put into an economic downturn until they had the money to fix all that was lost. That attack like a natural disaster affected the whole country. Just recently japan was hit by natural disaster that left the country in need of food and safety. They weren’t just hit by a tsunami but also by an earthquake. The earthquake also set off dangerous radiation plants which could destroy a whole city if activated the earthquake was recorded to be one – thousand times stronger than the earthquake that hit Haiti. It was also recorded to be thirty – two times stronger than the earthquake that hit San Francisco a while ago.

Another natural disaster that was very effective was Hurricane Katrina. Hurricane Katrina put more than half the state under water and the people with no hope or inspiration on what will become of New Orleans. When natural disasters hit the country or city that the people live or are visiting they all make the choice to pack up there most needed belongings and leave there house and the place they grew up in with so much memory and leave hoping to find it all intact when they return. Since i started researching this topic I realized how dangerous natural disasters really are. When I see another tornado or natural disasters happening to other countries or states I will feel a lot different about them and change my view on things that happen.

My experience during hurricane Harvey was mostly calm. I was very fortunate because, my house did not flood. The water only got up to the edge of my driveway, and that was as it was pouring off into the storm drain. I drove to Walmart to buy some extra cases of water, in case the faucet water became undrinkable. When I got there 100’s people were in line with cases of water, and when I checked the aisle there were none left. I was irritated, but also hoping there would be bread to buy. It is known that hundreds of people have died and over one thousand people remain without houses and clean water in Haiti, four people have died and one million people lost power in Florida and seven people have died, about 760,000 people still remain without power and over 880 people had to be rescued in North Carolina. I am sadden by the destruction that this hurricane has caused. I have a lot of friends in Florida and a lot of family in North Carolina all whom are safe. An earthquake that struck Bam, an Iranian city, killed 27,000 people and left 90 percent of housing destroyed. An earthquake just as strong hit San Simeon in California leaving only 2 casualties and 40 damaged homes (Staff). While even just one death is still a tragedy, there is a massive gap between 27,000 individuals and 2. But if both earthquakes hit with the same force, what differed? Why did one earthquake have such a large impact? The simple answer to this lies in the location of the earthquake. The first earthquake occurred in the less developed country of Iran. Such events are not anything caused because of human beings, but only by the actions of atmospheric conditions, or due to the changes of continental drifts that these disasters occur. Technology has come a long way since the early days before the industrial revolution where predictions can be made and warnings can be issued. This helps reduce the amount of possible loss of lives that would occur in 21st century. However, that is not what happened during Hurricane Katrina, a category 5 Hurricane.

A Natural Disaster

Waiting for my parents to return from our farm 15 kilometres away, I start to lose hope. The storm was too powerful, out on the streets there were cars blowing over and tumbling down the hill and house roofs lifting off. The storm tricked us; it turned and headed for the village. The clouds are furious. Wind thrashing the neighbour’s fence punching it into a wreck. The roar of the eerie, outrageous wind, creating damage to the once peaceful village, trees colliding with others sometimes crushing sheds and cars; the wind creating circles of dust whipping up anything in its way. Little drops of salty water run down my face as I see my home town getting ripped apart. Without warning, the window breaks away from the wall, smashing me and sending me flying across the room. The next morning I wake up covered in paper and glass, there was an ache in my leg and I look down to see a gash. I collect up a few papers and wipe up the blood. Now the air is calm and quiet. I try to keep positive. I am perched on my dark, red chair, gazing at the glass window as the cloud’s teardrops skate down it. It’s a depressing, murky day, can’t see any light; no glimmer of the golden sun about to break through the grey clouds, no colourful rainbows glistening in the sky. All I can see is gloomy shapes over the deserted village. I find a bandage on top of the fridge and try to wrap my leg in it. It doesn’t look right. Mum would know how to do this. The first people I see are down the street running out of a smashed house with T.V sets. I don’t recognise them. They hop in a car and drive to another house near the corner. A lady comes out of the house in the other direction, she has a baby in her arms and she is yelling someone’s name. She is calling out for the dear old man who used to water our garden. I look at his house. Half the house is caved in. Still clutching the child and calling the man’s name she tries to move the first piece of wood but it is jammed. She stumbles over the planks, making her way to the damaged house. As she gets half way over the pile she cautiously lowers herself onto a plank to calm her crying baby. But the baby is too restless; she turns and makes her way back to the cracked pavement. The phone. The phone. Mum, Dad; I can call for help. I try the phone; I hear static like the wind is still blowing somewhere.

Natural disaster is an unavoidable natural incident that no one can stop from happening. A natural disaster is a major adverse event which occurs due to various natural activities. It occurs naturally and most of the times occur suddenly without any prior warning.

People no matter how much they try cannot predict natural disaster even with all the advance technologies. Few times natural disaster before happening do give some warning but most of the times it does not. It can occur because of many reasons and for no reason as well.

Some examples of natural disasters are earthquake, volcanic eruption, flood, hurricanes, tornadoes etc. Most of the times when natural disaster occurs, it affects the natural habitats of that place heavily including human beings and some times the number of death can be very high too.

Natural disaster can be very vicious and the rate of viciousness depends on what kind of natural disaster it is and how populated the area of incident is with natural habitats.

Let’s take tsunami for example as it was one of the most vicious events that took the life of thousands and more and destroyed almost everything that came in between it and as a matter of fact it was so powerful that almost whole world felt it happening.

Surviving a natural disaster is very harsh and it is not something human beings who are used to the comfort of life can survive easily as it shows the ugly truth about reality in a way. Natural disasters are in no way welcomed anywhere but that doesn’t mean that it doesn’t occur.

I myself am a survivor of a natural disaster and am the witness of nature at its ugliness. Luckily for me the natural disaster I survived was not something too vicious but it doesn’t mean it is something I would like to face again. In fact if given the choice I don’t think I would like to go through that situation ever again.

The kind of natural disaster I survived was flood. Compared to the others natural situations, it wasn’t that bad but wasn’t good either. I survived it because at that time I used to live in a village and was somewhat aware of the harshness of the nature but still I wasn’t prepared for it at all.

In fact, I think I survived without too much difficulty because I was a kid then and my family acted as a shield in front of us so that we won’t get too affected by it. However, even with all the shielding, we weren’t really spared from its effect fully.

My village was situated near a branch of the river Mundeshari. It was the rainy season and it was pouring cats and regularly. We haven’t seen the face of sun for two or three days as the situation was that bad. Due to the rain and storm, trees fell on the electric wires and there was no electricity after the first day of the storm.

The river was almost full and was flowing with such speed and sound that it can scare anyone. That day, the rain finally stopped and we can finally see the sun so everyone in the village was happy but who knew that it was the calm before the storm.

That day during night we heard that the nearest dam has released a massive amount of water as the dam overflowed.

The next day I went to see if the river bank is safe or not just out of curiosity and it was fine till then as the water hasn’t reached there yet. However, after a few hours, the riverbank gave out and water started to enter from two sides of the village as the riverbank of a few other places has given out along with ours.

The water was entering the village at an angry space and within a few hours after that the whole village was surrounded with water. Luckily for us, our house was situated at the higher up grounds so the water did not enter our house but the same cannot be said for some of the houses present in the village.

Thankfully no further rainfall occurred after that. That was the only silver lining throughout the whole ordeal. As village people, our houses were well stocked to not worry about food for at least a week.

However, same cannot be said for all the houses as quite a few houses were already under the water and the residents of those house swam to the nearest higher up houses that did not flood with water.

I saw with my own eyes that people who we know were swimming to go to the nearest house after taking whatever they could before their house got flooded.

There were not much casualty of human life but same cannot be said for the animals whose dead bodies were flowing in the water. There were also a few unfortunate people who used to live quite far away and those people took shelter in the nearby large trees.

The villages that got flooded completely lost connection with the outside world and were on their own for the days to come. Fortunately for us, at that time there were radios present in one out of two houses so listening to the news was not a problem for us.

Listening to the news was blessing or curse we cannot say as two days after the flood we heard that the dam released another load of water. At that point of time we lost all hope of the water going down enough to go to the nearest bazaar.

Flood was not uncommon but that was not something any villagers were expecting. We knew at that point that we are going to be stuck for more than one week.

From that point of time the food became a little less than the housewives had to make the ration of one-week work for near about two weeks and then also we cannot be sure that the flood will go down.

I never thought before that time that I will ever go to sleep without a full course meal or have problem of pure water to drink considering the fact that I can see water wherever I look but none of them I could drink.

For the first time I understood the gravity of the situation. Even though I was little, I could sense that the situation in which we were in is not something good.

From that point of time till the flood subsided, I for the first-time witness how hash nature can be and realized that nature can be a loving parent as well as your vicious enemy at any point of time. When the flood finally subsided after around ten days, we could see how much damage it did.

The water had gotten rotten by that time due to the fact that many animals died and decayed in that water only so the water was kind of poisonous for animals at that point of time. Everywhere I looked, I saw only destruction and felt really bad as a situation like that no child should ever witness.

Nov 5, 2012 it was about 7 pm and I and my friends were in a classroom .All of us felt an aftershock of the earthquake, everything started moving in a wave nature as a river makes its way. Randomly we moved here and there and finally came out of the building. There exists no place to hide from the earthquake . However, we all went to the ground of our college, where we can feel the aftershock but it was a safe place to stay. The earthquake longed lasted for 1 minute, a new kind of sense, one I 'd never experienced before. Feeling my eyes are moving round and round, feeling unconscious, losing our diffident and anxiety spilled over the body. However, teachers were there to support us ,they were providing security ,so no one could have a problem and feel family environment .We started receiving phone calls from our parents, as we were far away …show more content… It was 2 pm on 25th April of 2015 when we reached to the ground to save our life. A large number of people were roaming here and there to escape from the earthquake. We felt more than 100 aftershocks that day. At night, around 50 officers came to rescue people and provided camp to sleep and noodles to eat. Some of the victims are praying to the god for death and some for life. Moreover, People shifted to the hospitals and medicines were provided in the ground. I lived worst two days in the ground with noodles thinking to be a lucky to be alive. In the evening, we faced the problem of a storm and rain which was a challenge to the nature . Next morning, I took a bus freely provided by the Indian government and returned back to my home town which is a much safer place than Kathmandu. After a 8 hours journey, I took a breather from the fear of the earthquake.

A narrative essay -First time I experienced an earthquake- Feedback

arubi 1 / 4   Sep 3, 2010   #1 Prompt: I have to write a Narrative Essay, based on a significant change of my life. I want to see if I'am heading in the right direction. At the tender young age of nine, I already had lived through my first earthquake in Chile. I had evaded death and lived to tell its story. I had experienced at first hand the trauma of living through one of Mother Nature's most notorious catastrophes. The earthquake taught me that life is unpredictable and life should be cherished intensely. I was living with my grandmother at that point in my life. It was an ordinary Sunday morning; I was dressing up to go to church with grandma. My aunt Berta had called earlier that morning to see if I wanted to attend church with her, but I wanted to spend the day with grandma. At that moment, I had not realized the impact of that choice. As we took the bus to the church, I remember thinking what a picturesque and tranquil day it was, resembling the calm before the storm. As we stepped off the bus, we immediately headed to the entrance of the church, arriving approximately at the start of mass. We sat near the exit of the church. The priest started his general discourse of the day which merely lasted a few minutes before we started sensing mild tremors. He said over his discourse, "Please do not be startled. It is only a tremor it will soon end". In the past I had experienced many tremors in the apartment we lived in, but due to my lack of understanding, I took tremors as mild disturbances and not as a prelude to disaster. Nevertheless, as soon as he finished his statement, the tremor turned into a cataclysmic earthquake. The earthquake feels like the ground underneath is having convulsions, shivering up and down with vigorous strength. Reaction is almost impossible due to shock and we could not move because it feels like the ground underneath is coming undone. Grandma and I started heading to the exit by holding on dearly to the church pews. As she led me to the exit, we struggled with other people who were fighting to escape, consumed by fear. Everyone was trying to flee through the small exit, and no one was succeeding. I felt like we were destined to stay inside of the church. I remember thinking, "This is it, my life is about to end", and praying to God for salvation. In the middle of my prayer for salvation, the earthquake stopped. We were soon pushed by the mob of people towards the exit of the church. As we stepped out of the church exit, we saw people on the ground who had been subdued by others. We started helping the people around us. Ironically the first person we saw at the exit of the church was the priest that had, a few moments ago, said everything would be fine. Grandma and I decided to head back to the apartment via the middle of the streets. As we began our course through the streets, we saw many people in the streets in shock, buildings on the ground, they were either entirely destroyed or partially. The streets were an impression of a war zone. As we walked, the aftershocks were continuously haunting us. Furthermore, the streets had been torn in the middle, opening up the earth. We felt obliged to make stops before heading to the apartment due to the aftershocks. When we arrived on the street of the apartment building we lived on, my aunt Berta met us in the front and said to my grandmother ,"It was a blessing in disguise she did not attend church with me" , half of the building had collapsed and she had been lucky to escape with her life intact. The apartment building looked as safe as the other buildings that had toppled down, it would be a great risk to walk up the stairs to the fourth floor. Grandma made the steadfast decision to stay on safe ground. Although, the building had survived with no visible structural damage. We gathered with a group of people outside, given that no one thought it was safe to go inside any surrounding buildings or structures in this disastrous wake. It was early in the afternoon; we contemplated staying in my aunt's home, located only a few blocks away. But due to the aftershocks and danger surrounding us, we decided it would be better to stay in the streets. My aunt at the time drove a Volkswagen rabbit, forest green. She offered her car to us and our neighbors; we found it to be the best shelter at the time. That night was an abomination; more aftershocks were in store for us. In the morning, we decided to get our personal things and some belongings together, since we would be staying in my aunt's house. We walked up the stairs to the apartment with much trepidation. As we stepped inside the apartment, we were lucky to find only a few things had fallen on the floor. We organized everything and headed out as fast as our feet could carry us to safe ground. Upon arriving at my aunt's home, we greeted her and I left both grandma and aunt bertha conversing, while I headed off to my assigned bedroom. When I sat down on the bed into depleted slumber, all my thoughts centered on the events of the previous day. It was quite an experience to have survived such a disaster. I realized that nature can't be controlled and life is a precious gift. Therefore, I know every step I take is a gift and ever since then I have lived my life to the fullest potential. Thank you for your help, I'am just starting out with this essay.

I think that you will find that after you re-write the essay, it will look and sound better. Each time, in fact, that you re-write it, you will feel that you have improved it that much more.
