Nursing Scholarship Essay Example
Home » Nursing Scholarship Essay Example
Wow! I never thought I would have my own scholarship , but this opportunity has come to fruition and I plan to use every dollar for the good of nursing. It is wonderful to be able to give back to the nursing profession, and it humbles me to be a part of this year’s recipient’s journey. I have been there, and nursing school is incredibly tough. To be able to ease the stress of that journey for a nurse pursuing his or her BSN is an honor !
I want to tell you why I believe scholarships are so important.
You always hear people talking about “nurse burnout”. Well, it is a real thing. Retirement is also a real thing. And the nursing shortage is a real thing . Therefore, we want and we need more nurses in this profession. I, personally, had to take out over $40,000 in student loans when I went to school, so I completely understand the need for scholarship and outside opportunities to fund your dreams. I want to live in a scholastic world where money does not stop one selfless human being from pursuing the most trusted profession in the world. Scholarships are super important to ensure that we can build up our profession with nurses for the future.
I would like to share an example of the Nurse Kelley Scholarship essay that I have written. It is completely true, and hopefully, this nursing scholarship essay example will give you a good idea of what we are looking for in a submission.
There are many reasons someone might choose to go into the nursing profession. Maybe they “want to help people”. Maybe they love math and science. Maybe they want to give back to their community. Maybe their mom was a nurse. Whatever the reason may be, for most of us, it’s different. I chose to go into nursing because of a personal experience that I had when I was young. I lost my biological father to colon cancer, and I wanted to be a caring support system for other families going through what we did. The strange thing about the many reasons people choose nursing, is that somehow, we are all still very connected in this choice.
You see, nursing is a profession where you have to take care of complete strangers, and we have signed on to do this for life.
Nursing is so incredibly unique and selfless in that what we do every single day is care for people who are at their most vulnerable moments, and we often times do it while missing something in our life that means something to us. We constantly sacrifice for our patients. We constantly give while barely taking. The most important thing to remember is that we don’t mind. That’s what makes us different. We know what we have gotten ourselves into, and we love doing it. There is a special place in a nurse’s heart that draws them to the type of work that we do. And it brings us all together, our binding character trait.
I think I can say now that I guess my reason for going into nursing is a combination of everyone’s reason. They may spark from different experience, but we are intertwined in our methodology for career choice through our heart for others. I am PROUD to be a nurse!
I want to remind any nurse reading this that nursing will continue to choose you throughout your career. It is so funny how nursing just pulls you out of your everyday life as if to say, “nope, you don’t get to be a civilian today, you’re still a nurse”! I’ll give you an example. Four days after I was crowned Miss Colorado I was driving in my crown and sash away from an appearance as a car flipped over on our interstate and started on fire. Of course, I pulled over. A fireman also pulled over (that special place in our hearts, other service industry members have that too!), and we collectively (after removing the crown and sash) helped pull this man from his car and start working on him. It was wild. I remember shaking my head thinking, “thanks a lot, nursing”, and then giggling. How lucky I am to have been chosen by this profession!
Nursing is the best. It will be a part of you forever.
Congratulations on making this choice for your career. You won’t regret it.
All my love,
Nurse Kelley

How to win nursing scholarships
Like any scholarship, nursing scholarships are highly competitive. If you want to earn funding for your BSN, MSN, DNP, or other nursing degree it’s important to stand out from the pack. One of the best ways to do this is by writing stellar essays. Researching the mission and values of the organization and considering what their prompts are asking for carefully can take you a long way.
Once you get an idea of the values and principles you want to emphasize in your application, it’s time to get to writing. We can help you fine-tune your writing to produce some concise and powerful essays. Our guides on writing about yourself , writing a winning scholarship essay , and tailoring your writing to 250 or 500 word limits are a great way to start. Be sure also to check out our guides to answering the most common scholarship essay prompts , and how to start and end a scholarship essay.
Full ride nursing scholarships
Nursing school seems like a much more attractive prospect if you don’t have to pay to attend. Many schools offer full ride nursing scholarships to students. NYU’s HRSA Nursing Scholarship covers all expenses for students. The Nurse Corps Scholarship is another great option for full-ride nursing scholarships. In this program, your education will be paid for, but you will commit to working as a nurse in a critical need area for a certain amount of time upon graduation.
Some states also have their own full-tuition nursing scholarship programs, some of which come with their own commitments to serve in high-need areas. New York State’s Nurses for Our Future program is a great example. Although students do have to cover associated fees and room and board, this nearly-full-ride program is a huge step to offset the costs of a nursing education.
Resources for nursing students
Nursing students can receive a host of benefits from joining nursing associations. Whether you are hoping to become a nurse practitioner, a registered nurse, or any other type of nursing professional, these organizations can help jump-start your career. They can include networking, conferences, scholarships, and even job placements. Here are a few associations to consider. Be sure also to check out organizations that are regional or local to you!
National Student Nurses’ Association
The biggest national organization for students studying nursing, this organization offers networking opportunities, subscriptions to nursing literature, scholarships, and more. They also offer student discounts on study tools and other resources you may need to use for your education.
Health Occupations Students Association
HOSA is a national organization that offers similar benefits to the National Student Nurses’ Association. The main difference is that HOSA includes members from all parts of the healthcare field. That means you’ll be plugged into a more diverse network of students. Both have their own benefits; while NSNA is more specialized, HOSA can plug you into larger networks.

How Do I Choose Which Scholarship To Apply For?

- What is the stipend, benefit, or reimbursement I would be eligible to receive? Some scholarships offer higher amounts than others, and may even cover expenses in addition to tuition and fees.
- Do I meet the qualifications? Some scholarships have more restrictions than others; make sure you meet the requirements listed before submitting an application .
- What do they want in return? Some scholarships either require you to be a resident, do your residency, or move to their location for a set amount of time. In addition, some may require you to work in a certain type of facility or area of care (geriatrics, acute care, etc.).
What Are The Benefits Of Getting A BSN Degree?
Here are some advantages to getting your BSN even after you’ve reached your RN:
Hospitals Are More Likely To Hire You
One reason hospitals prefer nurses with baccalaureate degrees is that they have more “life experience.” This is something they can tap into while engaging with patients. As a nurse, knowing how to relate and provide compassionate care to patients is a crucial skill that many medical facilities look for during the hiring process.
BSN Degrees May Soon Be Mandatory
According to nursinglicensure.org , a growing number of U.S. hospitals are now only hiring nurses who have a BSN degree. In addition, New York lawmakers have held hearings on this very topic, discussing the possibility of requiring a BSN within the first 10 years of practice.
Registered Nurses With A BSN Degree Can Earn Far More
Nurses who have received a BSN have more opportunities and higher pay. Nurses with a BSN can earn 22% more per year than their ADN counterparts . Also, many private hospitals have now put in place incentives or bonuses for nurses who have their BSN.
Holding A BSN Can Further Your Training, Experience & Qualifications
Completing an LPN program is the minimum requirement for entering the nursing profession, but if you really want to turn it into a career, a BSN is a must. It’ll give you more clinical rotations, on-the-job experience, and exposure to higher levels of medical and hospice care.
A BSN Scholarship Can Help Propel Your Career Forward
If you need financial assistance toward earning your BSN degree, getting a BSN scholarship is an excellent place to start. With the plethora of different grants and opportunities that can accommodate incoming students, you only need to put in the work. There’s a clear demand for more skilled nurses – and with so many paths toward becoming one, there has never been a better time to chase your dream!

This fact is motivating institutions and organizations all over the country to step up and offer scholarships, grants, and other financial aid to absorb some of the brunt of tuition costs for nursing students.
And it’s a good thing, too, because nursing school is not cheap. Nearly 3 out of 4 nursing students graduate with student loans. In addition, tuition is on a steady rise, adding to students’ need to borrow. For example, the cost of nurse practitioner school can sometimes total over $100,000.
While these numbers may be alarming, scholarships can help. Conduct a careful search for scholarships, and then be dedicated as you select, list, and apply for as many as possible. The more opportunities you apply for, the higher your chances of winning those awards. You might be surprised how much you can save on tuition by slowly chipping away at your scholarships list!

How to Qualify for Nursing Scholarships
Eligibility requirements can vary widely and depend entirely on the specific scholarship program. Still, others may seek out nursing students of a particular degree specialization or demographic.
Here are some typical eligibility requirements for nursing scholarships:
- An undergraduate or graduate student in nursing (sometimes specific to a particular level of education)
- A 3.0 GPA or higher or demonstrated academic excellence
- (Sometimes) pursuing a particular concentration of study
- (Sometimes) belong to an ethnic minority
Keep in mind, there may be other scholarships you can qualify for that aren’t related to the field of nursing. These include scholarships that recognize:
- Unique hobbies or skills
- Academic achievement
- Athletic performance
- Musical talent
- Volunteer work
- Your identity, gender, or demographic
- Financial need
How to Apply for Nursing Scholarships
There are a few things that students should keep in mind when they are seeking financial support for an undergraduate degree, graduate nursing program, doctoral degree, or any other degree focused on nursing school. Some students enrolled in nursing programs may also be able to find financial support to pay for their nursing education. Students should do the following things when looking for financial assistance as aspiring nursing students.
Where to Look for Scholarships
Scholarship applicants can take the financial burden of paying for higher education if they found a scholarship fund or grant program to pay for school. Whether you’re interested in finding a graduate program, a nursing practice, or nursing degree, there are options out there for you. You already have plenty of resources at your fingertips to get you started on your search for scholarships. You just need to know where to look.
You might start by asking your school if they know of opportunities. If you’re still in high school, as your guidance counselor, as they may have unique insights into local or limited scholarships taking place.
Or ask the financial aid office on your college campus. They can tell you not only of specific opportunities but also of practical tips to narrow your search and optimize your applications. Don’t forget to ask the nursing department at your school of choice. They may even have special scholarship opportunities unique to nursing students at your school.
You can also ask around locally, at the hospital, library, churches, volunteer committees, or even your employment (or your parents’). Finally, search online for scholarships. You might start with the U.S. Department of Labor’s free scholarship search tool or Bold.org .
Types of Scholarship Sponsors
Sponsors of scholarships can come from various organizations and committees. For example:
- Individuals
- The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services
- The Health Resources and Services Administration
- Minority advocacy associations
- Corporations
- College departments
Scholarship Application Strategy
When selecting scholarships to apply for, find a balance between applying to as many as possible and capitalizing your time on those that are likely to benefit you most (such as those with high award amounts or low competition). If an award is limited to a certain specialization or location that applies to you, you may have a higher chance of winning that scholarship. Undergraduate nursing students can also keep their eyes open for awards to help pay for any graduate degree they may decide to pursue in the future. Graduate students pursuing a future in nursing may be able to find many different awards to help them pay their way.
As you send out applications, it may be helpful to first gather up all the documents and information you’ll need for your applications. While different scholarships will ask for different bits of information, it’s common to require some of the following:
- A previously-completed Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
- ACT or SAT scores
- College or high school transcripts
- An essay or personal statement
- Your resume
- Letters of recommendation
- Other financial information

Title : Active carbons as nanoporous materials for solving of environmental problems
However, up to now, the main carriers of catalytic additives have been mineral sorbents: silica gels, alumogels. This is obviously due to the fact that they consist of pure homogeneous components SiO2 and Al2O3, respectively. It is generally known that impurities, especially the ash elements, are catalytic poisons that reduce the effectiveness of the catalyst. Therefore, carbon sorbents with 5-15% by weight of ash elements in their composition are not used in the above mentioned technologies. However, in such an important field as a gas-mask technique, carbon sorbents (active carbons) are carriers of catalytic additives, providing effective protection of a person against any types of potent poisonous substances (PPS). In ESPE “JSC "Neorganika" there has been developed the technology of unique ashless spherical carbon carrier-catalysts by the method of liquid forming of furfural copolymers with subsequent gas-vapor activation, brand PAC. Active carbons PAC have 100% qualitative characteristics of the three main properties of carbon sorbents: strength - 100%, the proportion of sorbing pores in the pore space – 100%, purity - 100% (ash content is close to zero). A particularly outstanding feature of active PAC carbons is their uniquely high mechanical compressive strength of 740 ± 40 MPa, which is 3-7 times larger than that of such materials as granite, quartzite, electric coal, and is comparable to the value for cast iron - 400-1000 MPa. This allows the PAC to operate under severe conditions in moving and fluidized beds. Obviously, it is time to actively develop catalysts based on PAC sorbents for oil refining, petrochemicals, gas processing and various technologies of organic synthesis.
Victor M. Mukhin was born in 1946 in the town of Orsk, Russia. In 1970 he graduated the Technological Institute in Leningrad. Victor M. Mukhin was directed to work to the scientific-industrial organization "Neorganika" (Elektrostal, Moscow region) where he is working during 47 years, at present as the head of the laboratory of carbon sorbents. Victor M. Mukhin defended a Ph. D. thesis and a doctoral thesis at the Mendeleev University of Chemical Technology of Russia (in 1979 and 1997 accordingly). Professor of Mendeleev University of Chemical Technology of Russia. Scientific interests: production, investigation and application of active carbons, technological and ecological carbon-adsorptive processes, environmental protection, production of ecologically clean food.
