Setting up project locally

It is assumed that you have python3 and git installed on your system.

  • Clone the repository and open cmd / bash inside the project directory.
  • Install virtualenv package running pip install virtualenv
  • Create virtual environment running virtualenv venv and activate
  • Activate it with source venv/Scripts/activate (Windows) or source venv/bin/activate (Linux)
  • Run pip install -r requirements.txt to get required packages.
  • Run jupyter notebook and you are good to go.

Dataset creation

Use generate.py script to create datasets, such as:

Clear text images dataset and it's annotation:

python generate.py --target text --text-file-path ./data/The_Picture_of_Dorian_Gray.txt

Downscaled images with different interpolations.

python generate.py --target downscale --images-dir ./tmp/images -hg 128 -wd 128 --interpolation cubic

Blured images with different kernels.

Run images through the tesseract engine.

  • To be able to use tesseract, download the installer from here and proceed with the installation.
  • After installing the compiled binaries, check out the example of usage in the main.ipynb .
  • Change the installation path of tesseract.exe if necessary.

  23. Need good OCR for printed source code listing, any ideas?

    1. Printed text vs handwritten is usually easier for OCR, however it all depends on your source image, I generally find that capturing in PNG format, with reduced colors (grayscale is best) with some manual cleanup (remove any image noise due to scanning etc) works best. Most OCR are similar in performance and accuracy.
