Kentucky State University’s Online Degrees

Online degree frequently asked questions, what can i expect from an online college course +.

If this is your first time taking an online course, the experience may require some adjustment. While you’ll generally learn the same content and take the same exams as your on-campus peers, the medium will likely require you to manage much of this experience independently. You’ll be accountable for your own time management, your ability to harness the technology at your fingertips, and your ability to focus on the lectures, lessons, and assignments at hand. This means you’ll need to create a suitable workspace for yourself, maintain a realistic schedule, and take it upon yourself to build relationships with your instructors and classmates. With online college, your goal is to find a balance between independence and engagement.

Is online college easier? +

No. The only part of online education that’s easier is actually getting there. Taking the commute out of the equation means getting to class should be a lot more manageable. But that’s where it ends. In general, your online courses will incorporate the very same materials, concepts, and testing methods as would a traditional classroom.

And in many cases, you’ll even have the same instructors as your on-campus counterparts. In fact, if you are adjusting to the experience of independent learning or working with remote learning technology for the first time, online college may even be a little more challenging for you. For a few insights on how to manage this new experience, check out our 10 Tips for Adjusting to School Online .

Why does accreditation matter in online college? +

Accreditation is especially important when it comes to online college. This is because the online education landscape is a mix of highly-reputable institutions and less-than-reputable for-profit schools. Accreditation gives you the power to differentiate between the two. Accreditation is a stamp of approval from an independent accrediting agency which indicates that a college or university is meeting standards of quality, credibility, and currency. School-wide accreditation falls into two major categories: regional and national accreditation. Regional accreditors generally hold jurisdiction only over schools in the states comprising their region, whereas national accreditors hold jurisdiction over schools in all states. Regional accreditation is widely regarded as a more rigorous standard of quality and credibility than national accreditation.

Attending a college or university which is not regionally accredited could limit your opportunities. When seeking an online education, we strongly recommend that students opt for regionally accredited schools. Regional accreditation ensures eligibility for federal loans and grants, ensures your college credits can be transferred between schools, and ensures that your degree credits can be accepted if you wish to earn an advanced degree.

Will I be able to transfer my online college degree? +

As long as your online college degree is regionally accredited, you should have little difficulty transferring most of your credits or credentials to another regionally accredited undergraduate school. Every school carries its own standards and procedures for granting a transfer. In many cases, you will be required to navigate a bureaucracy in which some of your credits will be transferred and others will be jettisoned. However, provided that you have attended an online school with the proper regional accreditation, you should have plenty of options for transfer.

Will employers respect my online degree? +

In most cases, as long you graduate from a well-regarded, regionally-accredited online college, prospective employers won’t look sideways at your degree. In fact, unless you attend an exclusively online college or university, there will likely be no specific indicator on your degree, transcript or resume differentiating your school from its brick-and-mortar counterpart. This means that your employer will likely only differentiate between an online and in-person degree if you mention this distinction.

While some employers may express concern about making the adjustment from online education to in-person workplace collaboration, many other employers will view your online degree as evidence of valuable 21st Century professional skills such as independence, self-motivation, time management, and tech savvy.

What are the disadvantages of online classes? +

If you are a student who thrives on the dynamic energy of in-person discussion, who requires the physical surroundings of a classroom to feel engaged, or who considers the social aspects of education to be of equal importance to the actual content of your courses, online education will require some adjustment.

While there is much that can be supplanted or simulated through the online medium, some students may find that there is nothing which can replace the conversation, collaboration, and motivation that occur in an actual classroom setting. As you make the adjustment to online education, one of the biggest challenges you will likely face is overcoming this difference in order to the get the most out of your classes. Fortunately, we’ve got some great Tips for Online Education Beginners .

What are the advantages of online classes? +

The advantages of online classes are many. First and foremost, online courses give you the freedom and flexibility to attend class from anywhere that works for you, whether you’re at home, in a coffee shop, or in a quiet conference room at work. In many cases, you’ll also enjoy the convenience of asynchronous learning opportunities-educational experiences that you can complete on your own schedule. This may include pre-taped lectures, ongoing chat-board discussions, and 24/7 access to digital materials. And of course, just as there are some learners who prefer the energy of a live classroom, there are those who learn best when working in their own personal space, free from distractions. If this sounds like you, you might find the solitude of online learning to be a major advantage.

Taking the plunge and submitting the application can be intimidating, but you can maximize your chances of acceptance by understanding what the programs are looking for and making sure you meet their qualifications.

  • Review the program’s admissions requirements . Most online doctoral programs require a minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.0. Most want to see your GRE scores , too, but they rarely have set minimum scores.

Benefits of Online Degree Programs

Integrating online degree programs within Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) has brought many advantages that cater to modern learners' diverse needs and aspirations. These benefits extend the reach of HBCUs and enrich the educational experience, fostering an environment where students can flourish academically and personally. Before we dive into the list of HBCUs that offer online degree programs, let's explore eight benefits you experience with an online degree program:

1. Accessibility and Flexibility

Online degree programs offer accessibility and flexibility that traditional on-campus education often cannot match. This is especially important for non-traditional students, working professionals, and individuals with family commitments. HBCUs that offer online degrees open the doors of education wider, enabling students from various backgrounds to pursue their dreams without compromising other responsibilities.

2. Geographical Diversity

The virtual nature of online programs erases geographical boundaries, enabling HBCUs to reach a broader audience. Students from different states and countries can engage in the same quality education these institutions are renowned for. This diversity enriches the virtual classroom experience, fostering a global perspective and cultural exchange among students.

3. Personalized Learning Experience

Online degree programs often allow for a more personalized learning experience. Students can progress through the curriculum at their own pace, delve deeper into subjects of interest, and engage in discussions and assignments catering to their strengths. This personalized approach enhances comprehension, retention, and overall academic success.

4. Balancing Work, Life, and Education

The flexibility of online programs empowers students to strike a harmonious balance between their education, work, and personal commitments. This enables working professionals to upskill or transition to new careers without disrupting their current employment. It also provides opportunities for parents to further their education while managing family responsibilities.

5. Diverse Learning Resources

Online degree programs leverage a wide range of digital resources, including multimedia presentations, interactive modules, and virtual libraries. These resources enhance the learning experience, catering to various learning styles and preferences. Students can access materials anytime, enabling them to revisit concepts and engage with content more thoroughly.

6. Networking and Collaboration

Contrary to popular belief, online education doesn't hinder collaboration; it enhances it. Virtual classrooms facilitate diverse interactions through discussion forums, group projects, and video conferencing. Students from different backgrounds and locations collaborate on assignments, contributing to a rich and vibrant exchange of ideas.

7. Cost-Effectiveness

Online degree programs often come with cost benefits, including reduced commuting expenses and the ability to continue working while studying. This can alleviate financial strain and make higher education more accessible for a wider range of students, aligning with the founding principles of HBCUs to provide education to marginalized communities.

8. Career Advancement

Online degrees from reputable HBCUs hold the same value and credibility as traditional degrees. Graduates have the skills and knowledge needed to excel in their chosen fields, whether starting a new career or advancing within their current profession. Flexible, High-Quality Programs to Advance Your Career

Today’s work landscape is constantly evolving, making it challenging to stay a step ahead and successfully differentiate yourself as the “best candidate” for that promotion or new position.

Early and mid-career professionals need to keep their skills and industry knowledge up to date, acumen sharp, and build connections that will help them excel in their field and achieve their career goals. And they need the ability to do it on their own time–while working full time and enjoying home life–without settling for a lower quality education.

Clarkson’s online master’s, certificate and micro-credential programs offer the high-quality and reputable education we’re known for – taught by experienced faculty with decades of teaching and industry experience – in a flexible and easily accessible format.

Because in 2024, it isn’t just about “work-life” balance. It’s about work-life-study balance.

Course Structure

Our online graduate degree programs combine synchronous and asynchronous learning. Typically, you’ll participate in one live virtual class each week; however, we record the lecture for those unable to attend this time slot. As a result, some students are able to complete their degrees entirely asynchronously.

Part- And Full-Time Study

Most working professionals are interested in part-time study. Our online graduate programs are flexible, so you can take just one course at a time, take on a full-time course schedule, or take time off if needed. Your academic advisor will help you plan out your course schedule and make changes to your degree plan, if needed.

Online Courses and Professional Development

We’re here whenever your skills need a refresh. And, as America’s Corporate Partner University, we collaborate with employers to create fully online professional development programs for their workforce.

Individual Courses

Clarkson offers fully online or paired online courses to currently enrolled undergraduate and graduate students. Check availability for the fall, spring and summer semesters.

Advanced Certificates

Broaden your knowledge base or pivot to an emerging field. For candidates holding a bachelor’s degree, our advanced certificates introduce you to business fundamentals or applications in supply chain management, human resources, data analytics, healthcare management and other areas. And if you decide to move forward with a master’s degree upon completion of the certificate, you can apply those credits towards your degree!

Micro-Credentials

Specialize your engineering and technical knowledge, explore the foundations of leadership or get a glimpse of what it takes to succeed as an entrepreneur. Taught by Clarkson faculty, our micro-credentials are open to alumni and working professionals, as well as current students. Contact the Office of Micro-credentials at [email protected] for more information.

Find HBCU Online Degree Programs and Colleges

Historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) provide students with a culturally diverse learning environment that may help them achieve success. But is it possible to enjoy the benefits of an HBCU education through an online program? Rest assured—it is possible. Keep reading to learn more about online HBCU degrees and colleges.

Can You Attend an Online HBCU Program?

Yes, you can attend an HBCU online . There are a variety of online degrees offered by HBCUs that carry the same authority as if the degree were earned through an on-campus program. While some HBCU students may prefer the on-campus experience, others may prefer the flexibility provided by an online degree program. The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the demand for more online education programs for college students, and many schools introduced new methods of online learning during this time.

When you attend an HBCU online, you are able to enjoy all the benefits of an online education—such as the ability to complete coursework when it fits your schedule—while still experiencing the supportive community for which HBCUs are known. Online degrees are available from HBCUs in a wide range of programs and degree levels to serve students with many different interests and goals.

What Are the Requirements for an Online Degree From an HBCU?

Admission requirements for online HBCU programs are often similar to those for on-campus programs, but there are some differences. For example, Morehouse College recommends that applicants for early admission to their on-campus programs have at least a 3.5 high school GPA (on a 4.0 scale). Comparatively, Morehouse Online requires applicants to have already earned some college credits (26 are recommended) before they apply. A cumulative GPA of 2.75 is required for those college credits.

Another possible difference in admissions requirements is related to standardized test scores. For example, on-campus Morehouse students are required to submit ACT or SAT scores with their applications, while there is no SAT requirement and no ACT requirement for Morehouse Online applicants. If you are interested in an online graduate program with an HBCU, there may be no GRE requirement and no GMAT requirement for applicants.

Some online HBCU colleges might not require certain test scores, while others do. Be sure to check the requirements of the specific schools you’re interested in before filling out an application.

Which Historically Black Colleges and Universities Offer Online Degrees?

There are currently more than 100 HBCUs in America as of January 2020, according to the U.S. Department of Education, but not all of them offer online programs. However, with the boom of online education in recent years, it is likely that online HBCU degree programs will become more and more common.

Undergraduate, graduate and doctoral programs are available online from highly respected HBCUs across the country. Online certificate programs at various levels are also available from these institutions.

It is possible to enjoy all the benefits of attending an HBCU while studying remotely. Many schools strive to make resources such as library access and career services as available as possible for online students. In addition, academic and financial aid advising are easy to access from home. Perhaps most importantly, obtaining your degree from an online HBCU allows you to experience the quality education offered by these renowned institutions from your own home.

HBCU Online Doctoral Degree

If you are interested in pursuing an online HBCU doctorate degree, there are many options available to you. The following table highlights some HBCUs that provide doctorate degrees which can be completed fully online.

HBCU Online Certificate Programs

Online HBCU certificate programs may provide a way for students to advance their skill sets and achieve their academic goals without completing a full degree program. Many HBCUs offer online certificate programs, including those listed below.

Tips for Attending an HBCU Online

Online classes can be convenient for students who have busy schedules. If work and family commitments make it difficult to attend a traditional on-campus program, an online program may help you achieve your academic goals without making sacrifices in other important areas of your life.

However, HBCU online degree programs still require diligence and time. If your online course meets at scheduled times, be sure to attend those virtual classes. To get the most out of the experience, ask questions and participate in class discussions. If your classes are asynchronous, don’t skip any videos or other assignments.

Online learning makes communication even more critical to your success. Don’t hesitate to email your instructors if anything is unclear regarding assignments, due dates or general course expectations. Even though you and your classmates may be collaborating from locations across the country, put in the effort to get to know your peers and make connections.

Find the Best Online HBCU School for You

What are the best HBCU online degree programs for you? Ultimately, it’s up to you to decide which programs are the best match for you. Consider aspects such as application requirements, synchronous or asynchronous class structure, course pacing, tuition costs and scholarship opportunities to narrow down your options. You may also be able to attend virtual orientation sessions hosted by online HBCU colleges to get a sense of each university’s values and atmosphere. To make sure you are making the most informed choice possible, consider coming to these sessions with a list of questions.

Attending an HBCU can provide a sense of community and level of academic support you may not find at other institutions, and an online HBCU program is no different. HBCU online degree programs could be a great way to earn valuable experience, gain skills for your future career and grow a network of professional and personal connections that can last a lifetime.

I'm a first-generation HBCU graduate. I'm now broke and lonelier than ever without my college friends for support.

  • I'm a first-generation HBCU graduate from Spelman College.
  • At school, I met inspiring Black women who became my community.
  • Now that I've graduated, I miss that community, and it doesn't help that I'm broke and jobless.

In May 2023, I became the first in my family to obtain a degree from a four-year institution. I sometimes forget how big of a deal it is that I graduated from a top-rated HBCU .

College was always a given for me, but I never could've fathomed that I'd not only be accepted to Spelman College in Atlanta but also come across some of the most awe-inspiring people I have ever met while there.

Now that I'm a broke, jobless graduate , I feel lonelier than ever without my Spelman sisterhood by my side.

The people I met during my undergraduate career irrevocably changed my life

As a freshman at Spelman, I was introduced to something I wasn't familiar with: collectiveness through the lens of sisterhood.

The best part about the all-girls school for big-brained Black girls was the feeling of never being alone. If my procrastination led to pulling an all-nighter for an exam worth 20% of my grade at 11 a.m. on a Wednesday, I could find solace in knowing that two of my classmates also did the same thing. When we'd flunk the exam regardless of how hard we group-prayed that we'd all at least pass, we could lick our wounds in the jam-packed cafeteria over a plate of soul food and the thump of the Isley Brothers.

Little moments like those at Spelman provided a spiritual respite that's hard to replicate anywhere else.

COVID robbed me of my sophomore year. Words fail to describe how mind-numbingly dreadful it was to "do school" behind a 14-inch screen, especially after sampling what it meant to be surrounded by like-minded Black women for months.

When I returned to campus as a junior, I told myself I'd go hard applying for opportunities, joining clubs, attending campus events , and engaging with peers. I can confidently say that it all worked out, but I don't think anything could've prepared me for how hard my friends' absences would hit me once we all graduated.

I'm feeling much lonelier now that I'm a graduate

It's been almost a year since I left Spelman with my degree, honors, and accomplishments. But now, I'm broke and jobless — two things I've been before. But 10 months ago, I lived with other broke, jobless people who helped me shave and dye my head when life got rough.

We're all scattered to the wind, out in the world, making choices that are changing the world.

I cheer my college friends on from behind my phone screen and wish I were there with them, sharing in their celebrations like before. Most of the time, a comment on their Instagram story is the full extent of what I can do. Our obligations keep us busy and separated, so when I finish applying to my 10th job of the week, I send a text or a DM and hope my peers are having better luck than me.

I'm trying to find happiness in my post-grad life

I don't want my peak to be college, so I've looked to other avenues for community.

Luckily, I've found some online crochet groups that are Black women-centric. I try to imagine what the people in the forums look like behind their screens. I wonder if their faces light up like mine when I finish that final half-double stitch. I wonder if they'd cheer for me as my professors did when I landed that one LA internship they encouraged me to apply for. Suffice it to say, the groups aren't like my college community, but it's something.

Look, college wasn't always great. I'd be lying if I said I didn't ever doubt my place among my poly-lingual, Dean's List peers well into my junior year. But then, my roommate's family would take me out to eat with them, pay for my meal, and then buy me desserts to take back to my dorm. They'd tell me how much they were rooting for me and how proud they were. Those gestures reminded me that I belonged. I miss those gestures.

Spelman gave me my first real taste of a tight-knit community I don't believe I'll find in this economy again. So, for now, I'll stick to crocheting little lemon pouches and granny squares, hoping I can see my college friends again soon.

What’s an hbcu college.

Senior Associate, JPMorgan Chase

online phd at hbcu

As a high school or transfer student, you may have stumbled upon one of the 99 historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) in your research.

But what are HBCUs exactly? HBCUs, according to the U.S. Department of Education, are public and private colleges and universities dedicated to the education of Black Americans established before the Civil Rights Act of 1964. These colleges were started during segregation in the U.S. to give Black students access to higher education. They’ve played an important role in serving Black students who may have been denied access to education during slavery and segregation and beyond.

Let’s break down the ins and outs of HBCUs, including their history and other frequent questions students have about them.

What does HBCU stand for?

HBCU, the acronym, stands for historically black colleges and universities. While HBCUs have been around for more than 150 years, the official term was coined by the Higher Education Act of 1965, which expanded the federal government's role in secondary education and began to provide funding to HBCUs.

What’s the history of HBCUs in the U.S.?

The origin of HBCUs begins with Quaker philanthropist Richard Humphreys, who started the Institute for Colored Youth in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1837 to serve and educate African Americans. This institution became known as Cheyney University of Pennsylvania and was relocated over 30 miles from Philadelphia, to a town now called Cheyney, Pennsylvania. Today, the university is considered to be the first HBCU.

The Second Morrill Act of 1890 helped to aid the growth of HBCUs in the U.S. The ruling required states with separate colleges for Black and White citizens to establish colleges to train Black students in agriculture, mechanical arts, and architecture.

HBCUs continued to expand enrollment even after segregation in the U.S. ended in 1964.  Although HBCUs were originally founded to educate Black students, these schools now enroll students of all ethnicities.

How many HBCUs are there?

As of 2022, there were 99 accredited HBCUs , according to the National Center for Education Statistics. These schools are in 19 U.S. states, with 50 being public institutions and 49 being private.

As a refresher, a public college or university is in part funded by state governments and public sources, while private ones are primarily financed by endowments and tuition.

Some HBCUs across the country include:

  • Alabama State University (Montgomery, AL)
  • Arkansas Baptist College (Little Rock, AR)
  • Howard University (Washington, DC)
  • Edward Waters University (Jacksonville, FL)
  • Albany State University (Albany, GA)
  • Simmons College of Kentucky (Louisville, KY)
  • Dillard University (New Orleans, LA)
  • Bowie State University (Bowie, MD)
  • Jackson State University (Jackson, MS)
  • Voorhees College (Denmark, SC)
  • Wiley University (Marshall, TX)
  • Hampton University (Hampton, VA)
  • Virginia Union University (Richmond, VA)
  • Bluefield State University (Bluefield, WV)
  • Fisk University (Nashville, TN)

How do I apply to HBCUs?

The college application process for HBCUs is no different from applying to any other U.S. college or university. First, as you decide which colleges or universities you may want to apply to, you may want to ask yourself some of the following questions:

  • Are you looking for a two-year or four-year school?
  • Do you want to attend a co-ed or single-sex school?
  • Do a school’s major offerings align with what you want to study?
  • Is the school within your budget?
  • Do you prefer an urban, suburban, or rural campus?
  • Do the school’s extracurricular activities align with your interests?
  • Do you want to be close or far from home?

Once you decide what colleges you want to apply to, research the application deadlines and requirements. You may also want to consider filing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA ® ) so you can access federal student aid, including federal student loans and grants if you’re eligible.

Norfolk State and Hampton will both be represented at the HBCU All-Star Game this weekend in Phoenix, Arizona.

The Spartans are sending guard Allen Betrand, while the Pirates are sending guard Tedrick Wilcox.

This year’s game, at 3 p.m. Sunday at Grand Canyon University’s Global Credit Union Arena, will be televised by CBS.

Betrand is coming off arguably the best season of his college career. He was second in scoring for Norfolk State with an average of 10.9 points per game.

He mainly provided a spark off the bench, only logging a few spot starts, and was aptly named the MEAC’s Sixth Man of the Year. He also earned an All-MEAC third-team nod.

Wilcox was a steady piece in Hampton’s lineup this season. He started all but one of the 33 games he played in. He was second in scoring with 11.4 points per game and shot 40.2% from the field and 31.6% from beyond the arc.

Wilcox and Betrand spent one season with their respective schools after transferring in. Betrand transferred from Rider and Wilcox from St. Francis Brooklyn.

Both will be members of Team Rick Mahorn, aptly named after the former NBA champion who is a Hampton basketball legend.

This isn’t the first time Norfolk State and Hampton have sent players to the HBCU All-Star Game. Both teams have had players in the game in each year of its existence.

Last year, Norfolk State sent Joe Bryant and Kris Bankston, while Hampton sent Marquis Godwin. In 2022, Hampton sent Najee Garvin and Norfolk State head coach Robert Jones was one of the four coaches.

In 2021, Hampton sent Davion Warren to the game. Warren finished his college career at Texas Tech. That same year, Norfolk State was represented by DeVante Carter. Carter finished his career at Nichols State.

The HBCU All-Star Game started in 2020. Norfolk State’s Jermaine Bishop and Hampton’s Jermaine Marrow played in the inaugural game.
