Example Statement of Purpose in Public Health (MPH)

I have been intrigued by cultural/ethnic, gender, racial, religious, sexual, and socioeconomic groups since I started high school. As my interest in learning about disability and diversity further developed, this prompted me to pursue an undergrad program in Anthropology at Brown. However, once I started this program, I realized that I also wanted to learn practical skills to be able to work with these diverse groups of people beyond just understanding them. Therefore, I started a Certificate and Diploma in Integrative Humanistic Counseling at the University of Georgia while doing my undergrad.

During my coursework and training at the University of Georgia, I have been fortunate to have been tutored, supervised, and mentored by esteemed public health practitioners like Professor Brandee M. Appling and Ginny Jones Boss. My experience of being taught by these individuals has shown me the sophistication, a deeper self-awareness, commitment to ethics, and a firm grounding in empirically based techniques inculcated by public health programs. This has inspired me to pursue a similar program to develop my skillsets and broaden my vision.

My objective is to pursue a Master’s in Public Health with a concentration in Population Mental Health. I am particularly interested in working with LGBT issues, gender-based violence, and survivors of Childhood Sexual Abuse (CSA). I have worked with disadvantaged populations such as transgender individuals, CSA survivors, and sex workers since my undergrad degree. I was a part of a participant-observation group with transgender individuals for a university project and since then have been associated with ‘The Blue Bird Project,’ which is working towards sensitization towards transgender individuals and creating a gender-inclusive society. During my undergrad, I also completed a year-long project with adult survivors of CSA. In addition, I recently delivered a workshop on raising awareness about this topic at the Academy of Letters.

This program will allow me to learn the best ethical practices used in professional work and espoused by the American Counseling Association (ACA). All MPH programs in mental health cover essential topics in Social and Behavioral Health, Adult Psychopathology, and LGBTQ Health, besides courses in therapeutic techniques and developmental theory. A unique aspect of my intended program is the opportunity to be part of practicum classes. In these, one’s assessment and evaluation skills are supervised and mentored by distinguished public health practitioners who expose one’s blind spots and test and develop the trainee’s analysis skills. Being exposed to this rich and broad curriculum will further build my critical skillset, like my tutors and mentors at Brown and the University of Georgia.

My domestic academic and professional exposure has prepared me adequately to work well with my clients; however, I aspire to learn from the best scholars and experienced health specialists on specialized topics such as working with the transgender population, victims of human trafficking sold into prostitution, victims of child sexual abuse and domestic violence, and prison populations. While I completed my projects during undergrad, I felt restricted by social and cultural constraints, sometimes even by my instructors. Learning through the classroom and my first-hand exposure to topics of my interest in America will further encourage me to return to my home country and have the skillset and the confidence to work better with these populations. I am fascinated by the group work my U.S.- qualified supervisors do in my home country. Some run groups for trauma survivors; others run groups for gay men, yet others work with prisoners. I hope to be able to learn these advanced group skills and work similarly. In addition, I am interested in running support groups for the populations I’ve mentioned.

MPH programs in the U.S. give students a comprehensive understanding of how public health professionals can play a crucial role in reducing the impact of emotional distress, mental illness, substance abuse, alcohol use, and suicide on society. They significantly sensitized toward the emotional development of individuals adversely affected by systematic social factors related to class, gender, race, age, disability, and sexuality. I hope that my training in the U.S. reinforces my skills which will help me better take up a role as a public health practitioner, therapist, and supervisor, as well as an advocate for causes that are very close to my heart. I provide individual therapy to clients whose issues of terrorism, domestic violence, sexuality, addictions, CSA, and other mental health problems have been impacted. I also serve as an observer/facilitator for one of the certificate classes, which is geared towards my independently tutoring a class of trainee therapists in the future.

This concentration will provide me with a foundational knowledge of psychopathology and equip me with the skills to understand current treatments, interventions, practices, and policies to improve global mental health and promote health equity. In addition, it will improve my grasp of group work, enabling me to conduct more advanced group processes. Finally, I will be able to learn the best practices of working with causes of empowerment, healing, and connection in populations mentioned above without the fear of judgment or hurting cultural sensibilities.

I also want to understand further the values of tolerance, multiculturalism, and individualism. My expectation from my degree is to help me realize my potential so that I can more effectively help my society realize theirs. I want to learn from and assimilate the experiences and views of the best minds in the world and share my own varied experiences from my own culture and work with them. I’m thrilled and looking forward to learning from highly distinguished professors who have worked to improve the human condition in their respective areas of interest. The research work, awards, publications, and experience of the professors shall all inspire me to stretch myself to be like them.

How to Write a Great Personal Statement for the Global MPH

Imperial College London’s School of Public Health is renowned for conducting world-class research on today’s most pressing public health issues. No matter how compelling your research findings are, it is essential to communicate them clearly in order to promote positive change.

The same principle applies to your personal statement for the Global Master of Public Health (MPH) program . This personal statement is a chance to make the case that you belong at Imperial. Making that case clearly and effectively can be as important as your academic and professional qualifications.

Many students get anxious about this portion of the application, or worry that their writing skills aren’t up to the task. Our advice? Don’t panic!

You don’t have to be an outstanding writer to craft a great personal statement. Your task is to provide Imperial’s reviewers with the information they’re looking for in 1500 words or less. Let’s break the key points down into three specific areas: your past, present, and future.

1. Past: your background in public health

Start by introducing yourself. You’ve already provided a CV with your application, so this is an opportunity to put your experience in context. Tell us how and why you became interested in public health, the skills you’ve developed, and what you’re most proud of in your studies and career. Don’t be afraid to let your personality shine through!

“Throughout my years at University and recent postgraduate studies, I have worked in a pharmacy as a pharmacy/ dispensing assistant, in both community and hospital settings with the latter being involved with cancer clinical trials. These roles have greatly advanced my knowledge of patient care, different treatment options and health awareness strategies within the NHS and local CCGs.”

“I worked on a retrospective study to examine the trends and outcomes of aortic valve replacements performed on veterans from 2005 to 2015. Prior coursework in statistics equipped me to interpret data analyses. I co-authored two abstracts. I often considered how researchers contribute towards reducing health inequities in specific populations.”

2. Present: why you are applying to the Imperial College MPH

After you’ve introduced yourself, explain your motivation for your application. What is driving you to take your career in public health to the next level, and why is the Imperial Online MPH right for you? Make a compelling case why you are applying to this program, specifically, and why now is the right time.

With an increasing life expectancy and an uncertain national healthcare budget, prevention of poor health from preventable diseases has never been more imperative.”

“I am particularly interested in studying at Imperial College London due to its Public Health Policy Evaluation Unit, as the research areas of the unit match my own areas of interest for future research which include big healthcare data, healthcare access and health policy; within these areas I have an interest in mental health, cancer and primary and secondary care.”

3. Future: goals for your research at Imperial and your career beyond graduation

Finally, show that you have a specific vision for your time at Imperial and your post-MPH career. Include a short proposal (150 words or less) for a research project that you would be interested in carrying out as part of your dissertation over approximately a three month period. This gives the team more of an idea of your research interests and motivation to undertake the online Global MPH program. HOW TO WRITE A WINNING PUBLIC HEALTH PERSONAL STATEMENT

Public health is one of the most diverse fields in healthcare practice, and the public health industry is expanding and changing at a rapid rate. 1 To break into this competitive field, strong qualifications, such as a Master of Public Health (MPH) , are essential, and a winning public health personal statement is a critical component of a successful MPH application. However, writing a personal statement for public health graduate school is substantially different from crafting one as a recent graduate or first-time job-seeker.

This post explains the importance of the MPH personal statement, and highlights four elements to consider when crafting a strong, engaging, effective statement as part of your application.

WHY IS A PUBLIC HEALTH PERSONAL STATEMENT IMPORTANT FOR AN MPH?

In public health professions more than in most careers, who you are matters. Because public health focuses on the human side of sickness and well-being, public health professionals interact continuously with individuals, communities, policy makers and educators. 2 Your personality is an important factor in determining the professional you will become. Admissions committees, therefore, need to understand you as a person in order to appreciate you as a candidate.

Among your application documents, your personal statement most effectively reveals who you are to an admissions committee. It demonstrates your passion and suitability for the program you are applying to and establishes you as more than the sum of your skills and qualifications.

SHOW, DON’T TELL.

A list of who you are, what you do, and where you see your career going will give the admissions committee a good sense of your suitability for the program to which you are applying. However, if you really want to engage your readers, show them rather than telling them. Human beings are narratively wired; we learn, remember and relate to material better when it is delivered in the form of a story. 3 A strong personal statement will be made even stronger if it is structured around a particular narrative.

To incorporate storytelling effectively in your personal statement, think about your strengths as an individual and the episodes in your life that have demonstrated and developed them. Emphasize the strengths that best align with public health professions: interpersonal and communication skills, an analytical and problem-solving mindset, a strong sense of social justice , and cultural competency are all good choices. 4 Tell the story of your life and career with your chosen strengths in mind. Show how each new experience has helped you progress toward being the ideal public health candidate.

BE PASSIONATE.

The story you tell must illustrate more than just your relevant skills and experiences; it should highlight your passion for and commitment to public health. Admissions-committee members know that the field of public health is demanding, 5 and a good MPH candidate is one who has the drive and dedication to face its many challenges. In your personal statement narrative, explain why public health matters to you.

Public health is a universal concern , and the work of public health professionals touches many aspects of our everyday lives. As you decide on the experiences you’ll include, consider how they demonstrate your personal connection to the public health profession. How have public health leaders inspired you? Where have public health issues affected your life? How have your achievements contributed to improving public health? Where do you hope to see further improvement, and why? By linking the answers to questions such as these with personal narrative, you will demonstrate your passion for the field.

WHY YOU? WHY THIS PROGRAM?

Competition for admission to graduate school is always fierce, and this is especially true when it comes to MPH programs. 6 To craft an effective personal statement, therefore, you must show that you are the perfect candidate for the specific school and program to which you’re applying.

Provide details on how your goals, experiences and passions align with the specific MPH program to which you are applying. You may want to comment on the research opportunities embedded within the program, for example, or the research specializations of key faculty members . Show how the unique details of the program align with your unique characteristics as a candidate.

By including specific references to the MPH program, you show that you’ve done your research and invested your time and energy in choosing a program carefully. Your demonstrated desire to be a part of the unique community and culture of your chosen program will make you a significantly more attractive candidate.

TONE MATTERS.

Finally, it is essential that you pay close attention to the grammar, expression and tone of your personal statement. As it is in many careers, writing is a crucial component of effective public health professionalism. 7 A successful public health practitioner must speak and write effectively. Producing a well-crafted, accurate, clear, engaging personal statement will demonstrate your competency in this area.

As you compose your personal statement, strive for a tone that is professional and formal. It will help balance the intimacy of the narrative style discussed above, resulting in a personal statement that feels both human and competent.

Check your work carefully for any errors in formatting, grammar or vocabulary, and make sure that you’re using technical terminology appropriately; mistakes in these areas suggest a lack of care and attention to detail that will reflect negatively on you. Ask someone whose writing skills you trust to proofread your personal statement. Even proficient writers can become blind to their own typos, and someone else’s knowledgeable perspective is always helpful, even if only to confirm the strength of your work.

The Statement of Purpose and Objectives requirements vary by program. Do not underestimate the importance of this statement. It is your opportunity to inform the faculty reviewers of your qualifications, motivation, and potential to make a contribution to the field of public health.

Statement requirement for all Master of Science (SM) and MPH (excluding JD/MPH):  

The Statement of Purpose and Objectives should  not exceed 600 words , although SOPHAS allows for a higher word count.  In your statement, please describe the following:

• Academic and/or professional preparation for a career in public health
• Your focused interest in the degree program/department or MPH field of study to which you are applying
• Career plans upon completion of the program at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health

Note any relevant strengths or weaknesses in your background or in your ability to carry out your professional responsibilities.

Statement requirement for JD/MPH:

The Statement of Purpose and Objectives should  not exceed 750 words , although SOPHAS allows for a higher word count. There is no prescribed format for the essay, but it should include information about the following:

• Your focused interest within the field of public health
• Previous academic, professional, and/or extracurricular experiences that demonstrate your interest in public health or health-related issues
• Reasons for wanting to enroll in the joint JD/MPH degree program
• Career plans upon completion of the joint degree program

The essay should persuasively establish (1) your preparation to undertake this intense course of study, (2) your understanding of the MPH curriculum, and (3) a good fit between the curriculum and your interests and goals.

Statement requirement for DrPH:

In your statement, please answer all of the following questions and number the response accordingly:

• Describe in detail your most significant professional experience and explain why it prepares you to pursue advanced professional studies in public health. (up to 500 words)
• Provide a reflection of your current leadership abilities and describe what you seek to reinforce and/ or strengthen in context to your work, through the DrPH degree program. (up to 500 words)
• Tell us about a public health problem or challenge that you seek to address as part of your studies in the program and/or upon completion of your DrPH degree program. (up to 500 words)

Kira assessment for DrPH applicants:

• Once you begin your application through SOPHAS, you will have access to the Kira platform. Through the Kira platform, you’ll be asked to submit responses to several timed video and one written question. This assessment is done in an asynchronous format, so you can complete your responses on your own time before the Friday, December 1, 2023 application deadline.

Statement requirement for MHCM:

Applicants to the MHCM program who have questions about the essay requirement may  contact Colin Fleming  at 617-432-7075. This statement should not exceed 1,250 words.

• In one paragraph or less briefly describe the organization where you are employed in terms of its purpose, its services and client population, and its scope of operation (state, county, etc., if relevant). Also provide several relevant measures of its size (e.g., annual budget and revenues; number of employees or full-time equivalents; patients or beds; and number of years in existence if less than five years old).
• In one paragraph describe your role in the organization, including title/position of groups or individuals to whom you report; current responsibilities; number and types of individuals you supervise; size of budget(s) you control; and names of principal committees on which you sit.
• Summarize your career development, describe the broad areas of endeavor in which you have engaged, and distinguish between clinically-oriented activities (e.g., teaching, research, practice) and leadership activities.
• With reference to your present and future responsibilities and development, describe what you are primarily interested in learning as a result of participating in the program. Please note subject areas in which you are well versed and those in which you feel you need improvement.
• Consider a professional project where you were responsible for design and/or implementation, and the project was successful. Describe what you learned from this experience and how it influenced you as a leader.
• Consider a professional project where you were responsible for design and/or implementation, and the project was unsuccessful or not implemented as designed. Describe what you learned from this experience and how it influenced you as a leader.

• Here, you can discuss relevant undergraduate experiences or courses in which you developed a particular interest. For example, you must have developed an interest in epidemiology or health economics to choose public health for education.

Third Paragraph

Have you faced any setbacks in your academics? If you just made the cut or have lesser scores, you can mention that here.

• It’s essential to reflect on the lessons from these experiences to underscore your resilience.

The application process to SOPHAS is quite lengthy, so we encourage you to apply early!

Here's what you will need:.

• Official transcripts from all colleges and/or universities attended. Transcripts must include proof of degree and/ or in-progress courses. (Final transcripts for in-progress courses must be provided prior to admission.)
• You will need a copy of your transcripts on hand and an additional official copy sent to SOPHAS.  Directions on how to send transcripts to SOPHAS can be found here .
• International applicants will need to have their transcripts verified with a course-by-course evaluation by the World Education Service (WES.) ( more information from SOPHAS )

A minimum undergraduate GPA of:

• 2.75 for domestic applicants;
• 3.0 for international applicants.

International applicants whose native language is not English must provide evidence of English proficiency by scoring at least a 79 (iBT) on the TOEFL exam or 6.5 Overall Band on the IELTS exam.

• TOEFL scores may be sent directly to SOPHAS .

All evaluations/ recommendations are submitted electronically directly to SOPHAS by the selected individuals. You must provide a minimum of THREE references up to a maximum of FIVE references.

The Personal Statement, or Statement of Purpose, is a short essay indicating the origin of your interest in public health, your professional goals, and/or why ETSU and you would be a good fit. The Vanderbilt Master of Public Health Program is a full-time CEPH-accredited program offered through the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. All students begin the program in the fall semester.

Applications must be submitted with all required documents in SOPHAS on or before the application deadline.

• Priority Round: December 15
• Regular Round: February 15

GRE and/or MCAT scores are not required.

Choose a track (concentration):  Epidemiology ,  Global Health , or  Health Policy . Applicants may submit one application to the Vanderbilt MPH Program per admissions cycle. Read the track descriptions and email [email protected] if we can help you identify which track is the best fit for you.

Eligibility

• Bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree
• We seek applicants who have a good sense of their career interests. At least two years of relevant, post-undergraduate professional experience is preferred, but not required for admission

For all track concentrations, there are two application deadlines:

• Priority Round: ​​December 15 Applications submitted and complete with all required documents in SOPHAS on or before the Priority Round deadline will receive priority consideration for scholarships awarded by the Vanderbilt MPH Program.
• Regular Round: February 15 All applications must be submitted and complete with all required documents in SOPHAS by the Regular Round deadline in order to be considered for admission.

The Vanderbilt MPH Program may have scholarship funds to offer Regular Round applicants, but there is no guarantee. Applicants who wish to be considered for scholarships awarded by the Vanderbilt MPH Program should apply by the Priority Round deadline.

After the Regular Round deadline, applications may be reviewed on a rolling basis as space permits, through May 1. Before submitting an application after the Regular Round deadline, please email [email protected]  to confirm availability.

It is the applicant’s responsibility to follow the instructions provided by SOPHAS and to ensure that all required documents are received by SOPHAS on or before the deadline

In order to be reviewed for admission, applications must meet the following criteria on or before the application deadline:

• SOPHAS status of “complete” or  “verified”
• All application requirements received by SOPHAS

Applications submitted in SOPHAS on or before the Priority Round deadline, but missing any application requirements (such as letters of recommendation, official transcripts or WES credential evaluation, official standardized test score reports), will automatically be moved to the Regular Round. If all application requirements are received by SOPHAS on or before the Regular Round deadline, the application will be considered for admission in the Regular Round.

An application missing any of the required components will be considered incomplete and will not be reviewed.

Applicants with extenuating circumstances that prevent them from meeting the application deadline may contact [email protected] to request an extension. Requests will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Extensions may be possible depending on the individual situation and the timing in the admissions cycle.

Application Fees

SOPHAS charges an application fee . SOPHAS provides a limited number of fee waivers to qualified applicants on a first-come, first-served basis. The Vanderbilt MPH Program cannot award SOPHAS fee waivers.

There is no Vanderbilt supplemental fee for applicants to the Vanderbilt MPH Program.

Official Transcripts

Application Advice: Take processing and delivery times into account and request your official transcripts as early as possible

SOPHAS and Vanderbilt University require official documentation of applicants’ prior academic degrees and academic course work.

The applicant is responsible for monitoring their application in SOPHAS and following up with prior institutions about missing or delayed transcripts. Neither SOPHAS nor the Vanderbilt MPH Program is responsible for notifying applicants of missing transcripts.

U.S. Institutions

U.S. and English Canadian Transcripts

Official transcripts must be sent directly to SOPHAS from all U.S. and English-speaking Canadian institutions you have reported in the “ Colleges Attended ” section of your application. SOPHAS will not process your application until all official transcripts have been received.

International Institutions

International and French-Canadian Transcripts

Applicants who have received academic degrees from international colleges and universities (including Caribbean and French-Canadian) must use  World Education Services (WES)  ( course-by-course evaluation ) to submit transcript information to SOPHAS.

SOPHAS will not accept transcripts from international universities or other agency evaluations (i.e. ECE). International transcripts should not be sent directly to the Vanderbilt MPH Program.

Transcripts for Courses in Progress

Applicants currently enrolled in a degree program or taking courses at the time they submit their application in SOPHAS should submit official transcripts with courses in progress  on or before the application deadline. Once a final degree transcript is available, the applicant should contact their institution to request an updated official transcript showing final course grades. Click here for more information.

Standardized Test Scores

GRE and/or MCAT scores are not required for Fall 2023 applicants.

Applicants are not required or expected to submit GRE or MCAT scores in SOPHAS. Applications without scores will not be penalized in the review process.

Applicants may choose to self-report their GRE or MCAT scores in SOPHAS. Self-reported scores should include the percentile score for each section of the test. Self-reporting scores is optional.

TOEFL or IELTS test scores are required for international applicants.

International students are required to submit an official TOEFL or IELTS score report. Score reports should be sent directly from the testing organization to SOPHAS. TOEFL scores should be sent using institution code 5688 .  TOEFL and IELTS score reports are valid for up to two years after the test date.

TOEFL / IELTS Waivers :

• U.S. permanent residents and those who have completed a degree at an institution where English was the official language of instruction are not required to submit TOEFL or IELTS scores.
• Applicants who qualify for a waiver may leave the “Standardized Tests” section of the application in SOPHAS blank.
• Please do not contact the Vanderbilt MPH Program to request a waiver. No formal waiver documentation is required. When to schedule standardized tests

Application Advice: schedule test dates and request score reports with adequate time before the application deadline

Official score reports require time to process, deliver, and match to an application in SOPHAS. Test dates should be scheduled and score reports should be requested  well before the application deadline. Applicants are responsible for ensuring that official score reports are received by SOPHAS on or before the application deadline. Applications without required score reports by the application deadline will be considered incomplete and will not be reviewed.

To request an official score report, contact the testing organization. The score report should be sent directly from the testing organization to SOPHAS using the standardized test codes provided.

Note: There are multiple GRE institution codes for Vanderbilt University. If you choose to submit an official GRE score report, be sure to use institution code 0111. Score reports requested using a code other than 0111 will not reach the Vanderbilt MPH Program.

Statement of Purpose and Objectives

As part of the SOPHAS application, you will upload a written narrative describing your past education, experience, professional career objectives, and how the Vanderbilt MPH Program will help you achieve your professional goals.

While prior professional experience is not required, relevant work, service, research, or internship experience is valued in the review process.

The statement of purpose (or personal statement) is limited to 1,000 words .

Epidemiology Track

For Epidemiology track applicants, the statement of purpose should include:

• Reasons for your interest in public health, and specifically the Vanderbilt MPH Program’s Epidemiology track
• Any areas of interest or proposed research topics you may have at this point  (this is optional)
• Your academic and career goals
• How the Vanderbilt MPH Program will help you achieve your goals

Global Health Track

For Global Health track applicants, the statement of purpose should include:

• Reasons for your interest in public health, and specifically the Vanderbilt MPH Program’s Global Health track
• Any previous international experience or work with international or underserved populations

Health Policy Track

For Health Policy track applicants, the statement of purpose should include:

• Reasons for your interest in public health, and specifically the Vanderbilt MPH Program’s Health Policy track
• Any relevant experience in the areas of health care, health services research, economics, public policy, or government
• Your educational and career goals
• How the Vanderbilt MPH Program will help you achieve your career goals

Letters of Recommendation

A minimum of THREE (3) letters of recommendation is required for an application to be considered complete. These should be from persons qualified to evaluate your academic and professional abilities.

At least one writer should come from an academic source, such as an undergraduate or graduate adviser or faculty member in your field of study. Letters from a peer or colleague, friend, or relative are not suitable.

Reach out to your letter writers to obtain their preferred e-mail address and make sure they are monitoring their e-mail inbox for your reference request e-mail.

You may e-submit your application in SOPHAS before your letters of recommendation have been received. VUMC Support

Applicants to the Vanderbilt MPH Program who would like to pursue the MPH degree as part of a VUMC-affiliated training grant, residency program, or fellowship program should ensure that their letters of recommendation include:

• Letter from a VUMC faculty mentor committed to the candidate’s career development
• Letter from a VUMC program director, division director, or department chair assuring approximately 80% protected time for research and that the applicant will be free from clinical duties during MPH classes

I am keen to undertake the MSc Public Health course at Birmingham City University (BCU) to fill in my academic gap in knowledge and skills in the contemporary trending functional areas of Health. My Pharmacology & Therapeutics background has given me the drive to move my career to increasing awareness of disease prevention.

My previous study of BS in Pharmacology & Therapeutics at Delta State University, NigeriaIprovided me with comprehensive knowledge in core Health functions while covering other related functions that Public Health organizations possibly have. During BS in Pharmacology & Therapeutics studies over the last four years, the excellent course structure coupled with high academic standards further stimulated my interest in the field of Health. After graduating I chose to work for Temitayo Clinic & Mat. Home, Lagos to learn about Medical performance and develop professionalism. That was a great experience for me. One of the most valuable things I learned from my BS and work experience is a structured way of thinking that has enabled me to have greater clarity of the things I need to accomplish and respective priorities both in my academic and professional life. Following lead from my attainments, the study of this MSc Public Health degree will help me develop great interpersonal skills, be a quick problem solver and overall a health professional.

At BCU, this MSc Public Health programme is taught by professionals and entrepreneurs. This program is made up of courses for health, designed to provide the knowledge and practical skills necessary for a successful career. This course is designed to help students understand how health regulation operates in a global public health. In this class,I will have the chance to be introduced to the principal perspectives on several of the key issues and topics in Public Health Foundations, Public Health: From Health Protection to Community Development, Global Public Health: A Social Context Approach, Epidemiology and Evaluation, Leadership and Project Management for Health and Healthcare, Research Methods of Enquiry and Dissertation. Those are to help me understand different components of the career of public health.

Successful completion of this MSc Public Health degree would enhance my career prospects, enabling me to progress on to senior roles at either operational, policy or commissioning level in a wide range of areas. In addition, Public health research and practice is at the heart of tackling many of the world’s current threats to health including the recent COVID-19 pandemic. The study will provide me the opportunity to develop the skills and understanding needed to become a leader and agent for change in Public Health. From the study, I will be able to advance my public health knowledge, skills and approach to teamwork, multi-agency collaboration and community partnerships throughout the modules on this course and critically evaluate strategies to improve public health outcomes. These skills are increasingly relevant for the public health workforce and while in profession I will be able to use these in a variety of settings including multilateral and international NGOs, local health authorities, National Public Health authorities, the voluntary or the private sector.

During my studies in the UK, there will be an opportunity for me to develop the critical thinking skills, creativity and confidence that employers look for. One of the most diverse areas of healthcare practice is public health, and the sector is growing and changing quickly. Strong credentials, such as a Master of Public Health (MPH), are necessary to break into this competitive field, and a strong public health personal statement is an essential part of a successful MPH application. In order to broaden my knowledge and the range of my impact within my community, I intend to pursue a Master of Public Health degree at Washington Mills University. How long should I spend writing my MPH personal statement?

We generally recommend about 4-8 weeks - 6 weeks is a good sweet spot. It takes time to come up with ideas and get those ideas onto paper in a compelling form.

Where can I find some good examples of personal statements?

Other than Google, I really like the sample admissions essays in Graduate Admissions Essays by Donald Asher. If you're a DIY kind of person, Asher's advice for the entire graduate admissions process is very good.

How can I make my personal statement stand out?

MOST personal statements are BORING! Not because the person writing them is boring, but perhaps because:

• Their focus is too broad. They try to cover everything they've done, and nothing ends up standing out.
• They're impersonal. It's a personal statement - the reader needs to get a sense of who you are and what you're actually like - not some sanitized "professional" version of you.
• They're too safe. Ironically, a statement that takes no risks can be the riskiest thing you can do. We're not applying to a program with the intent of blending in with all the other applicants!

Granted, the above things can be overdone, or done wrong. But most statements make no impact, so it's worth thinking about how yours actually can.

Our MPH program is designed for students and professionals looking to improve health policy and practice and address current and evolving issues in public health locally, nationally, and globally, with particular emphasis on eliminating health disparities.

The Master of Public Health (MPH) is the core professional degree globally recognized for public health practice. Howard's Master of Public Health (MPH) will prepare you, like many of our graduate alumni, for leadership roles in public health education, research, policy, and administration. Our MPH graduates are employed by state and local health departments, research institutes, nonprofits, and private sector agencies. Others pursue further graduate or clinical study. Areas of research strength include individual, social and structural determinants of health, biostatistics, epidemiology, health policy analysis, maternal and child health, environmental health, global health, and health communication. Our program offers a convenient class schedule and you can earn the degree in 18 months. An integrated learning experience completed in the second year, and a culminating capstone project, allow you to gain practical public health experience and integrate knowledge from your coursework to address an issue or question of public health relevance. As a student in Washington, D.C., you are a short distance away from leading public health organizations like the Pan American Health Organization, American Public Health Association, Public Health Foundation, and Public Health Institute. During your time in the MPH program, you’ll learn to use quantitative and qualitative analysis approaches to interpret evidence that informs best practices in designing, implementing, and evaluating health programs and policies. You’ll work closely with practicing faculty who advance public health for underserved communities through meaningful partnerships with community stakeholders and with national and global organizations. Statement of purpose/statement of academic interest should highlight why you wish to pursue a career in public health and address the following:

• What type of work are you currently involved in?

The Community-Oriented Public Health Practice Master of Public Health (COPHP MPH) program is one of several MPH degree programs offered by the UW Department of Health Systems and Population Health (HSPop). Our COPHP MPH degree prepares students for fulfilling careers as leaders in the field of community health through a problem-based learning approach .

All applicants must apply through both SOPHAS and the UW Graduate School to be considered for entry. We recommend beginning the application process early to ensure all requirements are completed on time.

Step One: Research the Program

Applicants must understand the COPHP MPH problem-based learning approach and highly interactive classes. All applicants are expected to demonstrate their understanding of the program’s unique structure and curriculum in their application.

Meet Eligibility Criteria

• Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university in the United States, or its equivalent from an institution outside of the U.S.
• A minimum 3.0 grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) for the last graded 60 semester credits or 90 graded quarter credits
• Demonstrated English language proficiency for applicants whose first language is not English

Two years of full-time work or substantial volunteer experience in public health is strongly recommended. The COPHP MPH recognizes unpaid work, including volunteering and internships, as valuable opportunities to inform your understanding and experience in public health. Additionally, the program appreciates that lived experience can be a contributing element to your understanding of public health systems and readiness for graduate school.

Current Bachelor Student Criteria

The COPHP MPH program team considers applications from students who are still enrolled in a bachelor’s degree program if they meet one of the following criteria:

• A nontraditional path to college or graduate school, with full-time work experience in public health
• Exceptional academic performance with significant public health experience during undergraduate training

International and/or Undocumented Applicants

We welcome international and/or undocumented applicants. Applicants whose first language is not English must demonstrate English language proficiency .

You are considered an international applicant if you are not a U.S. citizen, immigrant (documented or undocumented), or permanent resident. International applicants include students who hold U.S. visas, such as F-1, J-1 Exchange Visitors, H-1, dependent visas, or any other nonimmigrant classifications.

International students must have a visa status that allows for academic study at the University of Washington. If you are admitted to the COPHP program and plan to attend on an F-1 or J-1 visa, you must study full time — at least 10 credits per quarter — to maintain your visa status.

Please note that international students should be prepared to cover all educational costs, as most financial aid programs will not be available.

Understand Concurrent Degree Options

Concurrent degree options are available for COPHP MPH students with the following UW degrees ONLY:

• Master of Social Work (MSW) from UW School of Social Work
• Master of Urban Planning (MUP) from UW College of Built Environments

Other Concurrent Degrees: If you are interested in pursuing a different concurrent degree, we strongly encourage you to reach out to us ([email protected]) to discuss course plans, fee structures, and degree timelines.

As of the 2023 admissions cycle, COPHP is no longer extending invitations to clinical-track MSW students due to new UW Graduate School policies and competing course planning that prevents completion of both degrees in three years.

Unofficial transcripts are needed for the UW Graduate School, and official transcripts are needed for SOPHAS. You may omit transcripts that are redundant or irrelevant to this degree, such as minor transcripts for coursework that is irrelevant to the program.

Obtain unofficial transcripts from each college or university where you earned a degree or completed relevant coursework. Download unofficial transcripts or scan printed copies. UW will request official transcripts when an offer of admission is made (international applicants) or accepted (domestic applicants).

For SOPHAS applications, you will need to order official transcripts from each collegiate level institution attended. Details can be found on the SOPHAS website.

The GRE is no longer required! However, if applicants think their GRE scores are a better representation of academic preparedness for the program than their transcripts, they may include their GRE scores.

If applicants choose to submit GRE scores, they must self-report them in the online application with SOPHAS AND have scores sent directly to SOPHAS from the Educational Testing Service using the institutional code below. Scores from the testing services must arrive by the application deadline to be considered.

Letters of Recommendation

Number Needed: 3

Identify three people who will write letters of recommendation, such as academic advisors, professors, supervisors, or mentors. Recommenders should be familiar with your academic goals and potential for achieving those goals. These letters should address the general topic of your suitability for the program and should mention how recommenders know you and for how long.

Requests for the letters will be sent out via SOPHAS. You will need to provide names, emails, due date, and 500-word personal message to the recommenders. The recommenders will receive an email that directs them to a secure website where they will submit their letters.

You will be able to return to the online application to check whether letters have been submitted. You are expected to be in contact with each recommender to make sure that the letters are submitted by the application deadline (noted at the top of this page).

Please note: These letters are used for all programs you apply to through the online SOPHAS application. If the programs you are applying to include the UW Community-Oriented Public Health Practice Master of Public Health (COPHP MPH) program, one recommender must be an academic reference who can specifically speak to your readiness for graduate school.

Update Resume or Curriculum Vitae (CV)

Make sure your resume or curriculum vitae (CV) are up to date and inclusive of any public health experience you might have, such as conference presentations, publications, mentoring, volunteering, and other unpaid experience.

Request a Fee Waiver (optional)

You can request a fee waiver from SOPHAS as well as the UW Graduate School.

If you requested an application fee waiver, DO NOT submit your application until you receive approval or denial for the fee waiver. You cannot get reimbursed after paying the application fee. Contact us if you have questions about fee waivers.

Application IDs

To be considered for admission, you must complete both the UW Graduate School application and the SOPHAS application.

Both application portals provide the following:

The Personal History Statement is meant to give you the opportunity to offer a narrative of your lived experiences, and obstacles you may have overcome and how these have guided you towards an interest in public health. This statement should not be the same as your Statement of Purpose.

Your Personal History Statement can include information about who you are as a person; your family or cultural background; your socioeconomic conditions; and your experiences growing up, including successes, challenges, and moments of learning and growth.

Please do not feel compelled to provide personal information you would rather not share.

MPH Program FAQs

A Master of Public Health is an interdisciplinary, professional degree at the graduate level. It is meant for individuals who are interested in public health practice.

No. The UNC Charlotte MPH program is not STEM-designated. However, other schools may have programs that are.

No. Unfortunately, the UNC Charlotte MPH program is unable to offer application fee waivers. The application system is managed by the UNC Charlotte Graduate School and they manage that system and collect those fees.

No. Applicants to the UNC Charlotte MPH program are welcome from all majors.

Applicants are required to have a four-year degree ( or its equivalent ) from a regionally or nationally accredited institution.

No. However, students considering the epidemiology concentration should have at least one undergraduate-level quantitative course OR be able to explain their experience with working with quantitative data in their personal statement.

The GRE is no longer an admission requirement for the UNC Charlotte MPH program.

Competitive applicants to the UNC Charlotte MPH program have an undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or higher. Students with undergraduate GPAs below a 3.0 should contact the Program Director before applying.

The admission committee will consider your entire portfolio when reviewing your application. This portfolio will include a personal statement, transcript of classes and GPA (grade point average), relevant work experience as communicated by a resume, and letters of recommendation.

Strength in one area may outweigh a perceived weakness in another area. Be sure to address any deficiencies or potential “red flags” in the personal statement, either integrated into or as a supplement to the statement of goals and objectives. Use the statement to put such weaknesses in context and to note any explanatory information that would convince the committee you could be a successful student. Ignoring an obvious weakness undermines your credibility with the committee. You can see the profile of our admitted cohort here .

Applicants should submit three (3) letters of recommendation.

Ideally, two (2) letters of recommendation are from instructors who have had you in the classroom. They should speak to your written and verbal abilities, your class participation, and your work ethic. It may be useful to send them your personal statement which will help them focus on specific areas. 

A 3rd letter can be from another instructor, an internship supervisor, a volunteer coordinator, or a work supervisor (if you’ve worked in public health). 

Other tips:

• We do not want “character letters” (e.g. letter from your pastor indicating what a good person you are). 
• We strongly encourage you to “waive” your right to view your letters of recommendation. Waiving allows your recommender to make a comprehensive appraisal of your strengths and weaknesses. If you do not trust your recommender to write you a fair letter, then they probably are a poor choice.

While in most cases, two (2) pages should be sufficient, we do not place any requirements or limits on the length of the statement.  Your concise statement should serve the following two purposes:

• Demonstrate your understanding of the MPH degree and what it prepares you to do.  
• Link your prior experiences to your aspirations (e.g., tell us where you’re coming from, how you became interested in public health, where you’re going, and how you think the degree will help get you there).
• Your statement should indicate which concentration you are interested in, and what type of job you envision yourself in after graduation.
• Explain/provide context for any potential ‘red flags’ (integrate or a separate section of the essay). Do not ignore a potential weakness.

Work experience is not a requirement of the UNC Charlotte MPH program; however, relevant experience in any public health setting may enhance your application and better inform your personal statement.

If offered admission to the program, it may be possible to transfer up to twelve (12) graduate-level credit hours. These credits cannot have been applied to another graduate degree and earned credits must be a C or better. 

Note: a transferred C counts toward the accumulated Cs allowed for the degree. Please refer to the MPH Student Handbook for additional constraints and expectations for transfer credit.

To be considered for university scholarships and grants, applications should be submitted by the priority deadline. These opportunities are typically only available for Fall admission. 

Applications received after the latest application deadline above for each semester and prior to the university application deadline will be periodically reviewed, subject to space limitations.

The UNC Charlotte MPH program uses a rolling review process which means we review applications as they come in during the review period. Fall admission reviews usually take place from early January through early April. Spring admission reviews usually take place from mid-September through early December.

Typically, applicants can expect a decision within 3-4 weeks of their application being referred to the program from The Graduate School, possibly longer if the application is held over for a committee discussion. The Graduate School review can take several days after the application is submitted up to 2 weeks.

The UNC Charlotte Graduate School policy prohibits students from deferring their admission. Therefore, if you are unable to begin classes for the term in which you applied for admission, a new application will be required and you will undergo the review process for the new semester.

international applicants

The UNC Charlotte Graduate School requires the submission of official scores on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), the International English Language Testing System (IELTS), or Duolingo if English is not the applicant’s native language and has not earned a post-secondary degree from a U.S. institution.

No. The UNC Charlotte MPH Program is required to follow the policies of the UNC Charlotte Graduate School. That entity determines the general requirements for international students to gain admission to UNC Charlotte.

MPH Program Cost

Total tuition paid for the program will depend upon the plan of study a student chooses (two, three, and four-year options are available).  Please see the  cost of attendance for the most recent MPH program tuition and fee schedule.

Students completing the two-year plan of study will pay for four semesters at the nine+ credit hours rate, and one summer session of at least three credit hours.

Additional expenses will include books (varies by class) and parking .

Note: Please make sure you are referring to the tuition schedule for the Master of Public Health Program, which is distinct from general graduate tuition rates.

Yes, the MPH program offers students assistantships in the form of instructional, research, or administrative assistance. However, these assistantships are limited and are highly competitive. They do not provide tuition support.

The MPH program benefits from three named scholarships that are limited to our students, the Donna C. Arrington Memorial Scholarship, the Hildreth-Young Scholarship, and the Jim and Dorie Boyes Scholarship. Scholarships are typically awarded only for the Fall semester.

Typically, MPH classes meet on weekday afternoons or evenings, Monday-Thursday, in the 2:30-5:15p or 5:30-8:15p time slots. There are classes that might be offered in the morning depending on the instructor. Typically, those are Wednesday or Friday classes. Elective courses offered outside of the MPH program may take place during the day or evening.

Most UNC Charlotte MPH classes meet at UNC Charlotte’s main campus at 9201 University City Blvd in the College of Health and Human Services. One or more classes per semester may meet at UNC Charlotte’s Center City campus at 320 E. 9th Street (conveniently located steps away from a light rail stop).
