While there are plenty of options to earn a BS or MS in computer science online, online Ph.D. in computer science programs are far more rare, especially now that schools are returning to in-person learning after the lockdown portion of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Why get a Ph.D. in computer science?

Most people who stay in school long enough to earn doctorates in computer science do so because they are interested in academics rather than pursuing regular tech-sector jobs. They often focus on abstract subfields like quantum computing or machine learning, leading to jobs working in research labs funded by universities or the government. 

Meanwhile, most high-paying tech companies are happy to hire bachelor's-level CS graduates straight out of undergrad, with master's graduates filling more senior or managerial roles. Earning potential in these roles can be higher with a Ph.D., but a BS-holder with enough career experience can often earn a comparable salary.

In short, when it comes to computer science as a degree options, earning a Ph.D. only makes sense if you're pursuing cutting-edge research or becoming a college professor. For most programming roles, a bachelor's or master's degree is enough, even at higher career levels.

The best online computer science doctoral degrees

While online learning can work for lower-level CS courses, where datasets are limited and require less processing power, computer science doctoral candidates often need access to specialized computing equipment that can process the large amounts of data required for cutting-edge work. That kind of computation simply can't be done via a home WiFi, so Ph.D.-level students need access to research labs — or their own expensive, high-end equipment. 

Aside from the technology limitations, many CS doctoral students are pursuing professorships and a career in academia. For them, making an in-person connection and being present on campus is often necessary for career advancement.

For these reasons, it's relatively rare to find fully online Ph.D. in computer science programs. There are a few — for example, Northcentral University and Auburn University both offer fully online options — but it's far more common for "online" doctorate programs in CS to offer some classes remotely while still having on-campus requirements for other courses or research work.

During the height of COVID-19 lockdown, most doctoral programs in CS moved partially online. This included programs at private schools, like Johns Hopkins University , and state schools, like Mississippi State University . However, with vaccines lowering virus rates, these programs are returning to campus, where students have more equitable access to technology and mentorship.

The lack of available, fully online computer science doctorate programs is why we are not offering a comprehensive ranking at this time. There are not enough programs to make an honest list, and many of the online programs currently available are moving back to in-person formats for 2022.

What to expect in a computer science doctoral degree program

If it sounds like a Ph.D. in computer science is the right path for your career, here's what you can expect once you've enrolled.

Computer science courses

Unlike at the undergraduate and master's levels, where students can expect to take a variety of computer science courses covering both general and niche topics, doctoral programs in CS are more targeted. Students are responsible for conceptualizing and executing their own research, and what subjects they can pursue often depends on the specialties of working professors at their chosen university. 

There is some coursework at the doctoral level, but independent research and dissertation projects take up the bulk of students' time and attention.

Computer science degree levels

If a Ph.D. sounds like more than what your computer science career goals require, you have a few other options. 

Firstly, not all computer science professionals need a full degree. For example, computer support specialists often only need a high school education and a certificate in computer science . With an associate degree in computer science , you can pursue roles like web developer or designer, though some employers prefer a bachelor's degree.

Most tech-specific jobs require at least a bachelor's degree in computer science. This includes many of the highest-paying roles, because technology companies often reward experience over education, especially in team development environments. It's far more common to find cheap  online computer science degree options at the bachelor's level than at the doctoral level.

However, a computer science master's degree can help with career advancement when seeking managerial or executive roles. For example, chief technology officers often hold a master's degree — sometimes a dual computer science and business master's.

Earning a Ph.D. in computer science is a great move for students interested in computer research careers or roles in academia. For most tech-sector professionals, though, it's not necessary, and there aren't many options when it comes to earning a doctorate online.

CSCI 567. Secure Software Engineering. 3 Credits.

This course covers software engineering principles and techniques used in the development life-cycle of cyber secure systems. Topics covered include, the characteristics of secure software, the role of security in the development life-cycle, designing secure software, and best-practices in secure programming and testing. Study includes review of industrial standards for secure software system engineering. Prerequisite: EE 601 , EE 602 , and admission to the MS Cyber Security Program. SS.

CSCI 554. Applications in AI/Computational Intelligence. 3 Credits.

A continuous study of the computational paradigms of Soft Computing in the field of Computational Intelligence. The topics include the applications of the various soft computing techniques in Computational Intelligence as well as more evolutionary algorithms in Swarm Intelligence. Prerequisite: CSCI 544 . Students are expected to demonstrate excellence in both defining and executing a substantial research project that forms a novel contribution to the state of the art in computing. With a highly individualized program of study, the degree provides students with depth in their chosen research area coupled with a rigorous breadth of knowledge across the discipline.

First granting the doctoral degree in 1969 (as a Ph.D. in Information and Computer Science), the College of Computing represents a continuation of one of the earliest and most well-established graduate Computing institutions in the United States, and in the world. This stature is reflected in our national and international rankings and, most importantly, in the quality of the students who have graduated from our program.

The CS Ph.D. Structure

The coursework component of the Computer Science Ph.D. consists of an introductory course on graduate studies (CS 7001), along with the separate breadth and minor requirements.

The breadth requirement is intended to give students a broad competency across the discipline of computing through coursework in a range of the College's different research areas. This requirement is satisfied by taking five classes from across the College's different research areas and must include a Programming Proficiency course and a Theory course.

The minor is a 9-hour sequence of courses from outside the College that constitutes a coherent program of study and is determined by the student and advisor. The minor builds non-Computing expertise in an area related to the student's core research area.

As students progress, they must select a primary area of research and pass a qualifier (comprehensive exam) in that area to demonstrate mastery of the field in their chosen area, and readiness to do research.

While coursework plays an important role in the Ph.D., by far the most important component of the degree is the student's individual dissertation research project. This project should contribute to new knowledge in the field of computing, and should demonstrate the student's proficiency in defining and executing a compelling research agenda.

The dissertation research plan is formalized in a written proposal followed by an oral presentation. When a student passes his or her proposal, the student is admitted to candidacy and proceeds with the dissertation research, which is completed with the successful defense and submission of the approved doctoral dissertation.

This is a Distance Learning PhD. The content of this PhD is identical to the on-campus offering, with the exception of being provided mostly online w ith some presence on campus if/when required.

You will undertake an individual computer science research project over one, two or three years, supported by our internationally renowned experts. The project will be shaped by your participation in research activities such as seminars, workshops, laboratory activity and fieldwork, as well as your involvement in one of our established research groups.

You will be based in the Department of Computer Science overlooking the lake on Campus East .

You will benefit from modern offices and collaboration spaces, and well-equipped research labs with a specialist in-department team to support your requirements throughout your studies. 

We will provide you with a laptop connected to the University network, and you will have 24/7 access to your desk and workspace. Distance learning students are allocated a work desk for the duration of their stay while they are in York.

For on-campus researchers, most of your training and supervision meetings will take place on campus at the University of York, though your research may take you further afield.

PhD by distance learning

We offer the opportunity to study for a PhD by distance learning. This is available to students based in the UK and abroad, studying full-time or part-time. Our PhD by distance learning offers the same high quality of supervisory support (primarily online), and demands the same level of academic rigour as a campus-based PhD.

You will undertake your research and thesis production remotely, joining us on campus only occasionally. You will be expected to visit York at your own expense at the following stages of your study:

  • Two weeks at the start of enrolment for induction, to meet your supervisor and your research group, and to meet other PhD students;
  • Two one-week visits each year at important stages ('milestones') of your study (the number of visits is reduced accordingly if you are a part-time student);
  • You will normally attend your PhD viva in person.

When you are not in York, you will continue to benefit from regular supervision meetings using online communication platforms, such as Zoom. Read more about how we support distance learners .

The PhD in Computer Science is intended for students who already have a good first degree in Computer Science or a related field.

For entry to the PhD programme, we require at least a 2:1 undergraduate degree, or a qualification equivalent to a UK Masters degree with a minimum average grade of 60%.

We are willing to consider your application if you do not fit this profile, providing you are able to demonstrate that you have the required amount of Computer Science knowledge and experience to succeed on the programme.

Your research proposal needs to outline the nature of your proposed study and give some indication of how you will conduct your research. The purpose of this exercise is to ensure that you and your potential supervisor(s) have matching research interests.

Your proposal can build on your chosen supervisor's area of work and may be prepared with the help of your chosen supervisor. It should be about 500 to 1,000 words in length, in English and in your own words. Read more about writing a research proposal .

What You'll Learn

The program consists of a minimum of 90 credit hours earned from graduate courses. The credit hours are distributed as follows:

  • 36 credit hours of classroom and instructional laboratory coursework.
  • Four foundation courses.
  •  Four research-oriented courses.
  • Group A – Theory and Algorithms.
  • Group B – Computer Systems and Networks.
  • Group C – Languages and Software Development.
  • Group D – Artificial Intelligence and Applications.
  • 36 credit hours of electives.

You will also take six semesters of seminar courses and prepare a portfolio consisting of a written statement of research interest and representative work to advance to candidacy. Once this has been approved, you will complete your degree with a dissertation and defense.

University Requirements:

  • A minimum of 90 credit hours earned for graduate courses numbered 500 and higher, including at least 36 credit hours of classroom and instructional laboratory coursework (this is above the university minimum of 24)
  • A minimum of 6 credit hours of research seminar.
  • A maximum of 30 credit hours of graduate transfer credit from an MS degree with grades of a B or higher may be accepted toward the PhD degree.
  • At least three full academic years of study beyond the baccalaureate degree.
  • A cumulative GPA of 3.0 in courses used to meet graduation requirements.
  • Graduate students must complete the PhD candidacy procedure within two years of full-time study after admission to the PhD program.
  • Doctoral candidates must complete an original research project submitted as a written thesis to be orally presented and approved before a committee of at least five faculty members. At least four members must be Clarkson faculty, of assistant professor rank or higher, and possess a doctoral degree. At least one committee member must be from a department other than the candidate’s major department. An external examiner with appropriate credentials from outside the university may serve as one of the five committee members. The thesis must also be approved by the dean of the graduate school and a copy deposited in the university library.
  • All work for the PhD degree must be completed within seven years after admission to candidacy.

Additional Program Requirements and Procedures

Coursework:

Students must complete a minimum of 36 credits of computer science-related coursework, including the following:

Foundations. Students must take four required courses across three areas: CS541 (theory), CS547 (theory), CS544 (systems) and CS545 (languages). A grade of B+ or better is required in each of these courses. A written exam option is offered for students who have taken equivalent courses at other institutions and for students who did not receive a B+ in the Clarkson course. Students who have taken equivalent courses at other institutions and pass the exam with a grade of B+ or better can replace the corresponding course with another CS course.

Research-Oriented Courses. Students must also complete a minimum of four 3-credit research-oriented 600-level CS courses. Research-oriented courses include a substantial research literature review and a research project/presentation component. The Computer Science PhD Committee will maintain a list of acceptable research-oriented courses. The 600-level CS Directed Study Courses are acceptable by permission of the Computer Science PhD Committee only when such courses satisfy the same standards as regular 600-level CS courses and include a substantial research literature review and a research project/presentation component. A grade of B+ or higher is required in two 600-level CS courses in order to advance to candidacy, and one of these must be a research-oriented 600-level course.

Breadth Requirement. Beyond the four required courses listed in Foundations, students must take one course from each of the following four groups. Courses used to satisfy this breadth requirement may also be used to satisfy the research requirements. The specific lists of courses may change, and students may petition the Computer Science PhD Committee to accept additional courses, including courses outside the department, in these groups:

  • Group A (theory and algorithms): 542, 546, 549, 556, 642, 656
  • Group B (computer systems and networks): 553, 555, 557, 563, 644, 654
  • Group C (languages and software development): 543, 550, 558, 560, 658
  • Group D (artificial intelligence and applications): 551, 552, 559, 561, 562, 659

Electives. Students must take additional courses as necessary to reach 36 course credits. Students are expected to take at least one graduate course in computer science or a related field each semester that they are enrolled in the computer science PhD program. This requirement may be waived in consultation with the student’s advisor or if the Computer Science PhD Committee decides it is in the student’s best interest to focus on completion of the thesis work.

Seminar. Students are required to attend and participate in the CS707 or 708 Seminar in Computer Science (1 credit) series during at least six semesters in residence in the PhD program. Participation is recommended during each semester in residence in the PhD program.

Candidacy. The doctoral candidacy procedure for the computer science program is portfolio-based.

Before advancing to candidacy, students must have completed the four required courses (CS541, CS547, CS544 and CS545) and two of the 600-level CS courses, at least one of which must be a research-oriented course. A grade of B+ or higher is required in each course.

Students prepare a portfolio consisting of a written statement of research interest and representative work from courses and seminars (e.g., exams, research papers, presentation materials). Student appear before the Computer Science PhD Committee for an oral defense of their portfolio. This oral defense and portfolio examination constitutes the comprehensive exam for candidacy in computer science.

To advance to candidacy, students must have also chosen a faculty advisor who believes they are prepared to begin original research in a mutually acceptable field of specialization.

Students must advance to candidacy within two years of full-time study after admission to the PhD program or be granted an extension by the Computer Science PhD Committee.

Thesis Proposal. Students must write a thesis proposal outlining their research plan and discussing related work and defend this proposal in an oral exam before the thesis committee.

In addition to the university requirements, at least three members of the committee must be from the Department of Computer Science.

Students must form their committee and pass the thesis proposal defense exam by the end of their third year of full-time study after admission to the PhD program or be granted an extension by the Computer Science PhD Committee.

Thesis Defense. The final step in completion of the doctoral program is the submission of a written thesis in conjunction with an oral thesis defense.

Candidates will normally present a 50-minute oral presentation of the thesis work at an advertised campus event followed by at least 10 minutes of public questions. After the end of the public session, candidates and their five-member thesis committee will gather in a closed session for final questions and presentation of corrections to thesis. Candidates will be then asked to leave the room for a final vote of approval. Following approval, candidates must complete the requested corrections to the written thesis and obtain final signatures. Candidates must provide all five thesis committee members with a copy of the thesis at least four full weeks before the public defense.

The thesis committee for the final defense is the same as that for the proposal defense. Any changes must be approved by the Computer Science PhD Committee in advance of the final defense.

Prerequisites: A BS or equivalent degree in computer science or another closely related subject. Admission to the computer science program depends upon the Computer Science Graduate Committee's approval.

PhD applicants are eligible for fully funded research or teaching assistantships. They may also receive merit-based scholarships that cover part of their tuition.

On the ground floor of one of the new computer buildings at the University of Maryland, Anna Kelleher played her centuries-old violin while a program running on a laptop in front of her told her to do things such as raise her chin or widen her stance.

These were common mistakes that Kelleher knows not to do. After all, she’s a graduate student studying violin performance. But she also teaches violin to others, and the program she was demonstrating might someday help those she teaches to play even better.

Believers in artificial intelligence say the program will radically transform our lives in so many ways.

It’s designed by Snehesh Shrestha , a Ph.D. candidate at the Department of Computer Science, and is the perfect example of how the University of Maryland is building bridges between AI and every other academic program on campus.

A simple webcam found on your laptop, or even your phone, captures enough movement and audio from your performance that the AI program can tell what you’re doing wrong. Whether your stance is too wide or narrow, to whether or not your chin is in the right spot, it can see and also hear everything you’re doing right and wrong.

The program was designed to try “to understand the whole space, not just blindly building a technology, but understanding how can we fill the gaps that are currently there in the entire music learning process,” Shrestha said. “And by identifying gaps where we can empower the teacher and the students, we could really build something a lot more powerful than just building a single technology. And that really was like the starting point of exploring into what the technology can provide towards the future direction of music education.”

On the monitor, the teacher can see the student in 3D — every angle imaginable — to see how they stand and how they move. Technology, including a piece that looks sort of like a smartwatch, can also send cues to the student through vibrations in the wrist.
