PhD in Business program track Finance

The Ph.D. program in Finance aims at nurturing ambitious academics trained in cutting-edge research, who will contribute to advance the frontiers of finance research.

Description of the research field and topics

The Ph.D. Program in Finance provides an in-depth knowledge of asset pricing, corporate finance, banking, household finance, market microstructure and many other fields of finance, which will allow students to successfully pursue their research interests. Knowledge, curiosity, creativity and analytical abilities are among the skills that our Ph.D. program nurtures. We have currently over 20 Ph.D. students. These students come from various countries, and they have different interests and backgrounds. English is the working language on the floor, as it is on the whole campus.

Collaboration with leading experts

Our faculty is highly international, and includes scholars at the top of their fields. Faculty/student interaction is among the highest among competing programs. Students are encouraged to approach any member of faculty to discuss ideas or to ask for advice. That's why we can offer very close individual supervision. Each Ph.D. student is mentored by one faculty member per quarter. Ph.D. student offices are back to back with those of faculty, and interaction is strong. Ph.D. students are closely overseen by the Graduate Program Coordinator.

Supervision

Interaction with supervisors during the Ph.D. phase is intense and often leads to papers co-authored by students and supervisors. Students always write at least one single-authored paper. This paper will be their job market paper.

Ph.D. program

The program is structured as follows:

The first year of the Ph.D. is largely devoted to rigorous training in microeconomics, econometrics and the basis of finance to provide students with necessary basis to undertake research.

The second year will introduce students to more advanced topics. The students will also start their research work followed by one or more supervisors.

The last phase of the graduate program lasts two to three years, and consists of completing a dissertation under the supervision of one or more faculty members.

What kind of students are we looking for?

The Tilburg Ph.D. in Finance aims to attract ambitious, inquisitive, and hard-working students who want to excel in academia. Applicants should have a strong quantitative background in economics or business and a MSc-level degree. We look for students with aptitude to critical and creative thinking, able to envision new research questions that address the continuously evolving issues in financial economics.

If you have achieved outstanding results in your academic career so far and have an ambition to become an accomplished finance scholar, we strongly invite you to apply.

A world-class international doctoral program, training the brightest minds.

The "Doctoral track" ( Master 2 ETE ) allows students to acquire a thorough and advanced general training in economic theory (micro, macro and econometrics) before choosing a specific area of research. During this first year, students are also given training in research techniques and work one-on-one with a faculty advisor to complete a master’s thesis that will be assessed by a board of professors.

Second year

At the end of the first year, students are admitted in the second year Advanced Research degree in Economics (MRes in Economics) on the basis of their results (courses and research work) and embark on a final year of advanced, specialized courses. Students should select 7 course topics among a list of advanced specialized courses and attend an annual research workshop (members meet on a regular basis during the year). This intensive training should provide PhD students with a strong foundation for the writing of their thesis and for their future research career. An advisor and another faculty member assist students in the design of their plan of studies. During the second year, students choose their field(s) of specialization :

  • Behavioral and Experimental Economics
  • Econometrics and Empirical Economics
  • Economics Theory
  • Industrial Organization
  • Macroeconomics
  • Public Policy and Applied Economics

At the end of this second year, students must present some original research work (a preliminary paper) to a jury of faculty members.

Thesis years

The two or three following years are devoted to full-time research and to writing the dissertation. Students are given the opportunity to mature and develop their economist’s intuition and techniques. PhD students participate in the life of academic groups , including seminars . They also present their research work in junior seminars and international conferences and are encouraged to participate in specialized summer schools.

Our PhD program is designed to prepare our candidates for the International Job Market.

Applications must be made online on the TSE platform eCandidatures. Any application submitted outside of the dates of the recruitment campaigns will not be reviewed.

Our ambition is to keep attracting the best students in the world. Therefore, we offer financial help for our future PhD students.

Some scholarships and grants are available at the Master 2 level: https://www.tse-fr.eu/admissions

Once the students graduate from the Master 2 ETE and continue in the PhD program, the doctoral school makes sure that they receive funding. Some positions of teaching assistant and research assistant are also available.

It usually takes 5 years for students to complete their thesis.

Basile Dubois, PhD student

phd economics tilburg

"TSE is a very good environment for research. Besides the faculty helping students, much administrative hassle is kept away from students to be able to better focus. In any given week there are more research seminars than one can even attend, so one is exposed to many different ideas. Throughout my time at TSE I enjoyed substantial financial support, both for my living expenses as well as for accessing data"

Markus Gebauer, Assistant Professor of Economics (International College of Economics and Finance, National Research University - Higher School of Economics Moscow, Russia)

"TSE is an amazing place for students who want to devote themselves into research. The professors here are very productive and nice. Their love to economics is so contagious. There are so many conferences, seminars, and workshops in diversified areas that could feed your interests and tastes. The quality and quantity of those meetings are fabulous. Overall, our PhD program in terms of its research environment is comparable to the top-ten programs in the US. The life at Toulouse is also very rewarding. You would meet many interesting persons here. International students' background are diversified and they come from five continents. I love here so much and miss the people I met here. You would never regret if you choose to come to TSE."

Nina Yin , Assistant Professor (China Center for Human Capital and Labor Market Research, Central University of Finance and Economics, Beijing, China)

"Learning how to become a researcher is not an easy task and TSE's structure in thematic groups played an important part in helping me develop research skills. Every week, we had a macro seminar with external speakers, a macro workshop for PhD students to present their work and a macro reading group where we discussed recently published papers ! When you present your work, comments from professors and fellow students can be tough to hear, but that's how make progress and learn how not to cut corners. Overall, the environment at TSE showed me a passion for intellectual challenges that was contagious. I felt encouraged to play my part and contribute, as an economic researcher, to a better understanding of the forces driving our economic system."

François de Soyres , Economist (World Bank)

"TSE gave me an outstanding training in econometrics which was crucial for the beginning of my career. I believe that the scientific environment at TSE is comparable to the best economics departments in the world. Just look at the amount and quality of seminars, workshops, and conferences hosted at TSE each year and compare it to any other top economics department. There are more events than you can digest!"

Andrii Babii , Assistant professor, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

"I enjoyed the diversity and academic environment here. Students and researchers are coming from all over the world and doing research in various fields, each contributing in a unique way to the diverse culture here. The research environment is of first grand; each year, top researchers around the world visit and give talks at Toulouse, giving us plenty of opportunities to be exposed to the research frontier. The researchers/advisors are really great economists and patient teachers; discussions on our work are usually deep and focusing on the big picture and economic applications, which I find are the most important part of economics research. Of course, the city is truly beautiful!

Some deals are too good to be true but TSE defies this adage. One gets to live in a great city and have access to one of the best economics departments. TSE has a big PHD program with roughly 20 incoming students each year, which makes you feel like a part of the community. I was part of the Macro group and learned a lot through interactions with the faculty members and other students. And this interaction was not just limited to internal members as the PhD students interact a lot with the visiting seminar speakers (and there are a lot of them at TSE!!).

In terms of the timeline, one spends the first two years on coursework. The core courses are interesting and give a good foundation for research, both in terms of material covered as well as to develop research agenda. I got good support from my advisor as well as other faculty members to keep my work on track throughout the PhD. For the job market, TSE has a professional team of people, comprising of staff members and faculty, who help you throughout the job market season. The hard work that TSE puts in to prepare its students is amply reflected in the placements!!"

Shekhar Tomar , Research Officer, Reserve bank of India

"I did my Ph.D. at TSE from 2011 until 2016 (plus a strong M1 a year prior). Coming from Peru to Europe for the first time, a lot was new, exciting, and different. Language-wise, for instance, classes were in English, while daily life was in French. To make this harder, coursework at TSE is tough and exams are intense. However, I can say with the benefit of hindsight, that such level of rigor makes TSE alumni well equipped to face the challenges of a dynamic world. At TSE, I learned to always stay curious, and to study seriously and committed to the subject at hand. After the Ph.D. I came to the U.S. to work in consulting. My adviser and other faculty members were always supportive of my choice and were instrumental for me finding a job in Washington, D.C. There, I have confirmed that TSE enjoys an outstanding reputation in economics, especially in IO. All in all, my years in Toulouse were some of the best in my life, I am deeply thankful to the school, the administrative staff, the faculty, and my friends!"

Rodrigo Montes , Senior Economist, Compass Lexecon

The TSE Doctoral School is a member of a European network of doctoral schools, ENTER  (European Network for Training in Economic Research), which includes the following universities:   - Universitat Autonoma Barcelona - Free University of Brussels - University of Mannheim - University of Stockholm - Tilburg University - Toulouse School of Economics - University College London - Universidad Carlos III de Madrid

Doctoral students who enrol in the ENTER programme spend between three months to a year in one or two of the network institutions where they benefit from exactly the same status as the other doctoral students. Depending on their situation, they may either attend classes or seminars, or work on their thesis under the supervision of one of the university’s professors. They are thus in contact with a wider teaching body and a more diverse range of research themes. They can also develop productive professional relationships with other students and thus become truly European economists. The network schedules a conference which rotates every year to a different member university and encourages doctoral students to visit and stay at one (or several) of the universities in the network

Welcome to the Tilburg University Top 100 of Economics Schools Research Ranking

At present, there is a worldwide ranking for Business schools, carried out by the University of Texas, Dallas ( The UTD Top 100 Business School Research Rankings ), and a Finance ranking carried out by Arizona State University. There is no current worldwide ranking for Economics schools comparable to that of the UT Dallas. Recognizing this, the CentER for Research in Economics and Business at Tilburg University, the Netherlands, decided to create a worldwide ranking for Economics schools. Our database covers publications in 79 leading economics journals (see Journals for the list), since 2004. We provide a standard Top 100 of Economics schools, based on a subset of journals in the database, over a 5-year period. In the "sandbox" it is possible to create individual rankings using various combinations of all of the journals in the database, and to search the database by continent, by country, or per (individual) year.

If you click on a university, you will see a list of all publications attributed to that university, in the specified time period.

Does anybody have some information about tilburg?...is it true that it is not a good place for living?...what about their scholarships?

Thanks for your help ;)

hunecon

If you send your application package after 1 February, you can't get a scholarship.

I was accepted there for RM1, and I spent there a month earlier. How can I express it properly,... it is more suitable for studying than for nightlife. However, nice cities are pretty close by train for a weekend or for a night (Amsterdam, Breda, den Bosch).

Adam_Schmitt

I have some additional questions with respect to Tilburg.

1) How big is the maximum number of students attending a lecture? I have seen that several lectures are compulsory for students from different programs.

2) Is it true that it is much more difficult to stay for a PhD after the MPhil is completed than in the past?

3) As far as I know there are some students leaving Tilburg after MPhil to attend a doctoral program in the US. Does this imply that the level of the MPhil courses is not similar to the level of courses given at graduate programs in the US? Are the courses at Tinbergen more demanding and comparable to US programs?

I am currently at Tilburg.

I would say Tilburg is nice only if you plan to do your PhD here.

@Aedes: you can send a mail directly to relevant people and ask about this.

@Adam_Schmitt:

Some classes are a bit crowded, like 40 people. Most classes are not that crowded.

It will probably be the case that PhD places will be more competitive than past.

I don't know about the level of classes in US, however from what I understand, similar books are used.

Hi, It will probably be the case that PhD places will be more competitive than past.

Why do you think so? Are less PhD positions offered or is the entering class bigger?

What is your personal opinion about the general quality of teaching?

Thank you very much for your interesting answers!

The first names which come to mind in IO/game theory, from there you can easily find the othres I guess:

Abbring: Jaap Abbring Homepage

Van Damme: Eric van Damme - Tilburg University

@Adam_Smitt:

CentER, the graduate school, has changed its strategy. They really aim to the top 20 (which is probably a bit too ambitious). As I understand it, the faculty will increase (or has increased) and logically the intake of phd students should increase a bit too. To do this, they accepted last year more research masters students then before... probably too much, hence more competition. The phd phase consists of two disitnct parts: research master + dissertation phase. Note that this doesn't imply pure attrition as there are some students who want to go industry after the research master or go to another uni...

Moreover, the number of applicants really took off last year..

Thank you very much for answering our questions. It seems to me that the race between Tinbergen and Tilburg is really close. Maybe it does not matter too much what program I will decide to attend - there are excellent people in almost all fields both in TI and Tilburg.

Furthermore, I was told good things about the quality of teaching with respect to both of them.

Any other opinions?

i don't know anything about scholarship, even how to get it?

anyone can hepl me?

thanks before.

best regard for all.

how's life?

i just wanna add question.

i know nothing about scholarship, even how to get it?

anyone can help me?

Maybe not too relevant, but I'm a big fan of Van Damme, he'd definitely be a draw for me.

thanks a lot for your information.:)

i've seen his cv, but how about if i need to chemical engineering (process engineering)

Professors are pretty nice and accessible. In that sense, I really like Tilburg.

There are about 80 RM2 students in total and about 20-25 will get PhD offers this year.

@Adam_Schmitt

Overall, I like the classes. However you will need to really work hard if you want to get good grades.

Getting a Koopman is usually tough. They will put a condition on Koopmans this year; if you get Koopman, you have to stay for PhD if you are made a PhD offer.

I have read some opinions about Tilburg University, maybe you can help me.

I was admitted in the Research Master in Economics (RME) program and I was awarded the TUSP scholarship. It is a partial scholarship but well, it is something!!!

Some people believe that Tilburg is a good place to study industrial organization (I have already read that). I really like this field but I do not know if Tilburg is the best option because I have seen that it does not have many courses about Information and Mechanism design (I like those issues). Is that true?

To be honest, my first option was Toulouse, but I was not admitted to the M1. Since the field I prefer is IO and I would like to specialize myself in information theory, do you recommend me to wait one more year to try again TSE or should I accept the offer of Tilburg? It is certainly a risk to reject Tilburg and wait to see what happen next year.

Is it possible to attend one year at Tilburg (the RME last 2 years) and then apply to the M2 of TSE?

What should I do?

Attend tilburg RM1 and then reapply to Toulouse M2 next year.

Because just in case somehow you don't make it into Toulouse next year, you can still continue with Tilburg for their RM2. Also maybe you will end up liking Tilburg a lot. Who knows. It is an experience and i say go for it.

Hi Doubt, I think that I have answered your question by pm, but I am not sure. I had some difficulties with the forum and my answer seems lost so I'll just summarize here:

If you want to apply to RM1 Tilburg and the year after go to M2 Toulouse, you just have to think about the time between the results of your exams coming out and the deadline for application in Toulouse. To be comforatbale thee should be a month in between and then it is possible I think. you just have to think wisely about your courseprogram and who to ask a recommendation letter to.

Since it is "only" a master program which you are applying to, I think it is really feasible although you really would need to ace your classes in the first part of RM1. That will be really important because you have little other opportunities to secure a decent letter from a professor in Tilburg.

Hi LouisBD. I didn't receive your message before. Thank you for your advice.

I also believe it is a challenge to go to Tilburg and fight to get good letters of recommendations. This is why some people recommend me to stay in my country and apply the next year to TSE. They usually tell me that my profile is ok for the M1, I just need to apply in December (this time I applied in February, that could be bad for me).

Anyway…now I am trying to contact some people who study at Tilburg and like the issues related to Industrial Organization, like me, in order to get more information about the RM program

Hi petecheese

When did you send your application exactly?

Mmm, I am not sure. Maybe the third week of February

and when exactly were you rejected?

Last week I wrote them an email and asked them about the results...(I am not very patient). I was wating for almost one month and I decided to write them.

How long did it take them to make the decision?

I don't know.

And were you informed by email or postal service?

Email (but because I wrote them). I know they notify by postal service, so, it depends on your address.

Good luck!!!

Hi LouisBD, I found your message, jejeje...I started to use this forum just some weeks ago, so I don't understand its system very well.

I also believe that the best strategy would be to focus on micro courses if my decision is to switch to the M2 at TSE. You tell me that Tilburg is not good enough on information theory and mechanism design. Do you know which topics (related to the field of Industrial organization) are the best to study in Tilburg. Maybe Game theory?

Thank you very much for your help, I really appreciate it!!! :)

It is a partial scholarship but well, it is something!!! Some people believe that Tilburg is a good place to study industrial organization (I have already read that).
