PhD in Veterinary Medicine

The purpose of the PhD degree program is to educate individuals to become independent, reliable, and competent research scientists.

The PhD degree requires the demonstration of independent research and a reasonable mastery of a concentrated field of study. The research should comprise an extensive body of original research in the student’s field, making a true contribution exemplifying the student’s depth of knowledge, creativity, innovation, and proven ability to make significant scientific research contributions.

The latter is attested to by the achieving of satisfactory standings in the approved program of graduate courses, the completion of a research project, and the writing of a defensible thesis based upon the research.

Depending on the individual thesis topic, projects could involve one or more of several species of animals. There will be considerable interaction and cooperation among the departments, with other universities in the region, and with government research laboratories to provide courses and research facilities to meet the needs of individual students and their research projects.

In the following it must be understood that the standard of reference is the typical Canadian university curriculum and university system.

Admission to a graduate degree program as a regular student is granted, on recommendation of the Department concerned, to:

• the holder of a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree, or a 4-year honours or majors baccalaureate or its equivalent, as set out below.
• a student who has satisfied the requirements for transfer from provisional student category as described below.

The minimum requirement for admission to graduate studies in the Faculties of Science and Veterinary Medicine is a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree, or equivalent; or a Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree, or Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) degree, or equivalent, normally of four years' duration, in an honours or majors program or equivalent from a recognized university or college, the applicant having achieved an average of at least second class ('B', i.e. 70% to 79.9%) standing in the work of the last four semesters or the last two undergraduate years.

Admission to the doctoral program normally requires at least second class standing as well as a recognized Master's degree. Admission to the PGD and MVSc programs is normally limited to holders of a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree, or equivalent.

Admission to a graduate course is normally based upon the same requirements as for admission to a graduate program, with exceptions needing the approval both of the Program Administrator and of the Chair of the Department within which the student is registered. Admission, whether as a regular, a provisional, or a special student, is in all cases based upon the recommendation of the department concerned and is subject to the approval of the Program Administrator.

Admission to advanced courses of instruction or to the privileges of research does not imply admission to candidacy for a higher degree.

The Research and Development (R&D) Center for Interdisciplinary Research in Animal Health (CIISA)

is opening a call for six research grants, hereinafter referred to as Doctoral Research Grants, in the areas of Animal Science and/or Veterinary Sciences or areas related, under the FCT Research Grants

Regulation (RBI) and the Research Grant Holder Statute (EBI).

The grants will be financed by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) under the Collaboration Protocol for Financing the Multi-Annual Plan for Research Grants for Doctoral Students, signed between the FCT and the R&D Unit Center for Interdisciplinary Research in Animal Health - CIISA (Ref. FCT UIDB/CVT/00276/2020).

Eligibility

The PhD Research Grants are intended for registered candidates or for

candidates who meet the necessary conditions to enroll in one of the

Doctoral Programs offered at FMV-ULisboa, ( http://www.fmv.ulisboa.pt/pt/ensino/PhDs )

and intend to develop research activities leading to a PhD in the CIISA

R&D unit, or in host institutions associated with it, under the

supervision of CIISA researchers.

Description: “The purpose of the AABP Amstutz Scholarship is to identify and support the most superior students with a graduation year of 2024 that demonstrate the character, knowledge, experience, motivation, and potential to become outstanding bovine veterinarians in the United States and Canada, prepared to meet the needs of the 21st century. Amount : Two awards of $2,500

Description : “The American Association of Feline Practitioners (AAFP) is a professional organization representing feline practitioners who are passionate about the care of cats. The AAFP is dedicated to advancing the field of feline medicine and surgery by setting the standards of feline care through the publication of practice guidelines, position statements, and by providing continuing education.”

Criteria: “Since 2016, EveryCat Health Foundation (EveryCat) and the American Association of Feline Practitioners (AAFP) have partnered annually to provide two scholarships for 3rd or 4th-year veterinary students enrolled in an accredited veterinary college or school in the United States or Canada. The two $2,500 awards are based upon academic achievement, financial need, leadership, and dedication to and excellence in the study of feline medicine, health, and welfare. Description: “On June 3, 2016 the U.S. Army Veterinary Corps celebrated the centennial of President Woodrow Wilson’s signing of the National Defense Act of 1916, an act that strengthened the nation’s military in part through the creation of a Veterinary Corps within the U.S. Army. Description : “Juliette Fassett, Founder of Dr. McGrath’s, sponsors a $500 scholarship to a female veterinary student in her 1st, 2nd or 3rd year of veterinary school. Description: The Veterinary Scholarship Trust of New England is a 501 (C)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to provide financial assistance to New Englanders studying veterinary medicine. Description:  “The Laurie Page-Peck Scholarship was instituted in 1993 to honor the memory of Laurie Page-Peck, senior veterinary technician at the North Carolina Zoological Park, who succumbed to cancer at the young age of 37 in August of 1992. Laurie worked at the zoo for 12 years, dedicating herself to the care of exotic animals, and was a member of AZVT from 1986 through 1990.”

Ed Hiestand Memorial Veterinary Student Scholarship

Georgia Veterinary Scholars Program (GVSP)

Amount:  Scholars receive monthly stipend

Description: “The Georgia Veterinary Scholars Program (GVSP) provides biomedical research opportunities for veterinary students. The Morris Animal Foundation Veterinary Student Scholar Program

Get to Know Joel Agate

Joel Agate is the Assistant Director of Advancement for the College of Veterinary Medicine .

When did you begin working at the College of Veterinary Medicine? I moved to Illinois and started working at the College in July of 2023. 

Describe your role at the college. I am responsible for annual giving, which means that I cultivate relationships with current and potential donors to the College of Veterinary Medicine, specifically donors giving gifts between $1K and $25K. I welcome opportunities, however, to support donors who give smaller or larger gifts and I recognize that every gift, small or large, enables us to achieve the college’s mission of improving animal, human, and environmental health. I work with alumni, community members, corporate donors, grateful clients, and anyone else who wants to support the important work we do at the college. 

I also support awards and scholarships, identifying and soliciting new scholarships and making sure that the funds come in to support the existing scholarships available to our students. Our office ensures funds are in place to support over $1M in awards and scholarships each year. I am excited to see this number continue to grow. 

Have you held any previous titles or responsibilities at the college? I am a brand-new transplant to Central Illinois and to the University of Illinois. Before joining advancement, I worked in the private sector, taught at universities including SUNY Brockport and Southern Illinois University Carbondale, and I worked in non-profits focused on helping people live healthy and happy lives. I am inspired by the college’s focus on One Health and I believe in our efforts to make lives better. 

What is your favorite part of your job? I love people! I pursued an opportunity in advancement, specifically because I wanted to connect with people who care about animals, people, and the environment and help them reach their goals. I also love being part of a university—there’s something about the environment where people are discovering new knowledge and people are learning to make a positive impact in the world. 

Complete this sentence: My most memorable day at work was… … No single experience, but my most memorable days are the ones when I get to hear people talk about the impacts the College of Veterinary Medicine has had in their lives—saving their beloved pets, being here to care for injured wildlife, or giving them the skills to care for other people’s animals. Be it grateful clients, alumni, or community members, I never tire of hearing people share stories of the care and compassion they have gotten from the people at the college. And when they are able to identify something they care deeply about, and they have the resources to support that financially, it is a joy to help them make a gift. 

What do you enjoy doing in your free time? I mostly follow my kids around. I have 3 wonderful kids and I love to support them in whatever they’re doing. My daughter (who just turned 17 years old!) is an elite lacrosse player, recently committed to continue her lacrosse career and pursue her college degree at Marquette University (because Illinois doesn’t have NCAA lacrosse). Over the past decade, we’ve traveled the country for her lacrosse tournaments, resulting in some great family time and wonderful shared adventures. My boys play soccer, dabble in other sports, and play in band. I enjoy being on the sidelines or in the bleachers for them, and thankfully, their activities tend to occur a bit closer to home. Oh, and my wife is a runner, so I love to cheer her on as she runs marathons, half marathons or other races—especially when she runs in beautiful places—so far The Lake Placid Half Marathon and The Key West Half Marathon have been my favorite ones to watch. Note, my participation in all these events is mostly sedentary and I participate entirely as a cheerleader, but I also love to jump into a backyard soccer game or game of catch.  

What is something your co-workers may be surprised to know about you? I have my PhD in Parks, Recreation and Tourism Management, and spent 9 years as a faculty member, ultimately leaving a tenured faculty position for other opportunities. I still miss the classroom, but I do teach as an adjunct instructor when occasion permits.

What is one thing on your bucket list? My bucket list consists mostly of beaches I want to visit and mountain trails I want to hike. My commitment wanes as my age increases, but I hope to thru-hike the Appalachian Trail and the Pacific Crest Trail. 

Do you have a favorite restaurant or place in the Champaign/Urbana area? I live right by Lake of the Woods Forest Preserve , and I spend a lot of evenings walking the trails with my family and enjoying nature. I also love Art Mart ! They have so many delightful things—delicious treats, great lunches, fun things for the house, and and and…. I could be a spokesperson for them, I love them so much! 

Aside from necessities, what one thing could you not go a day without? Even if it’s just to take my dog for a short walk, I have to get outside. I am excited to get to know the parks and natural areas that are within reach of Champaign. I have started making a list, but if you have recommendations, please send them my way!

Inspiring Tomorrow’s Veterinarians with Community Pathway Programs

Our initiatives aim to introduce young community members, including those from under-resourced backgrounds, to the field of veterinary medicine to inspire and show a path toward their future careers.

The University of Arizona College of Veterinary Medicine is dedicated to nurturing the next generation of veterinarians through community engagement pathway programs. Our initiatives aim to introduce young community members, including those from under-resourced backgrounds to the field of veterinary medicine to inspire and show a path toward their future careers. 

Secondary School Visits  

One example of the College of Veterinary Medicine’s commitment to fostering interest and diversity in the veterinary profession is a school visit organized by our Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion team.   Middle and high school students at Baboquivari Secondary School in Topawa, Arizona, on the Tohono O’odham Nation, visited our college and received a firsthand peek into the world of veterinary medicine. Dr. Alberta Arviso , Senior Engagement Officer at CVM, who aided in building connections and plans leading to this exciting visit, reflected on this event by sharing,   

“[We wanted] to provide an opportunity for students and educators to gain knowledge and experience on how to get into veterinary medical school and gain insight into veterinary medical career options. The students and educators were delighted and grateful to learn about the academic requirements, the admission process, and the role of a veterinarian. The purpose of this school visit was in alignment with the missions of both Baboquivari Secondary School and our College, which are to educate the whole person and to develop career-ready individuals who can serve in their communities. In addition, we want to encourage diverse groups of students in our Tucson community to consider a career in veterinary medicine.”  

Through presentations, demonstrations, and hands-on activities, the visiting students gained valuable insights into academic requirements, admissions processes, and the diverse career opportunities available in veterinary medicine. The visit included a tour of our main Oro Valley campus and the University of Arizona Campus Agricultural Center, allowing students and educators to see our didactic learning spaces and onsite teaching herds featuring cows, horses, and sheep. While at the CAC, Animal Care Manager Skyler Bentley and her team led the students in hands-on learning activities using the instructional animal models our VetCats utilize regularly. At the Oro Valley campus, students learned about histology from Dr. Sharon Dial, a Research Scientist at CVM. Direct contact with veterinary medical activities allows students to live out their passions and experience veterinary medicine in action.  

Central to CVM’s outreach efforts is our commitment to inclusion and diversity. Dr. Arviso discussed the importance of reaching out to under-resourced communities, emphasizing the role of early school outreach programs in attracting and exposing young people to veterinary careers. These initiatives introduce young students to a potential future for themselves and contribute to building a more diverse and inclusive future for veterinary medicine.   

Pathways to Veterinary Medicine  

School visits are only part of a larger effort by the College’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) team to encourage diversity and inclusivity in veterinary medicine. The community pathway programs encompass a range of initiatives, including the League of VetaHumanz TM , a unique nationwide program created by the Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine for kindergarten through fourth-grade students. The League of Vetahumanz TM , funded by the Science Education Partnership Award (SEPA) program of the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS), a part of the National Institutes of Health, aims to engage young children in STEM education by introducing them to veterinary medicine. Certified through the Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine, our Arizona College of Veterinary Medicine role model team of students, veterinarians, and staff, deliver the League’s STEM curriculum to local organizations such as the Boys & Girls Clubs of Tucson. Through these educational interactions, children gain valuable knowledge about a career field they might not have otherwise been exposed to and develop skills in communication, cultural humility, and animal welfare.   

When asked how outreach to under-resourced communities improves the field of veterinary medicine, Dr. Arviso said,  

“Early school outreach (K-12), community college, and Tribal college pathways are excellent opportunities to connect with people in our community. They attract and expose youth in our communities to careers in the veterinary medical profession, provide role modeling, and help diversify the field of veterinary medicine. They also build and sustain inclusivity in veterinary medicine as they recruit and retain future veterinarians who can be leaders in under-resourced communities. [It is important to] promote accessibility of veterinary medical services in under-resourced communities.”  

Looking ahead, CVM remains committed to expanding its outreach efforts and forging connections with schools and communities across Tucson and its surrounding areas. By extending pathway programs from kindergarten through twelfth grade, community colleges, and Tribal colleges, CVM seeks to create a lasting impact and inspire the next generation of veterinarians.  

Working with community partners, CVM is helping pave the way for a more inclusive and diverse veterinary medical field, where individuals come together to pursue their passion and make a meaningful difference in the lives of animals and communities.

Amarillo National Bank Gives $250,000 for Scholarship Support to the Texas Tech School of Veterinary Medicine

The transformative gift will change the lives of many students.

Amarillo National Bank provided a gift of $250,000 for scholarship support to the Texas Tech University School of Veterinary Medicine in Amarillo , which will provide students with affordable world-class education and more opportunities.

Amarillo National Bank is one of the School of Veterinary Medicine's Trailblazers, a term coined for long-time supporters who helped establish the school.  

“Helping students achieve their dreams at an affordable price is a major goal of our giving,” said William Ware, Amarillo National Bank's president. “We are proud to support these future veterinarians who will fill a critical role in our area for generations to come.”

Amarillo National Bank's donation supports the School of Veterinary Medicine's goal of educational affordability – an important determinant of success when students graduate and start serving the veterinary needs of rural and regional communities. 

“Their generosity will change the lives of so many of our students and set them up for future success,” said Guy Loneragan , dean of the School of Veterinary Medicine. “I am so grateful to Amarillo National Bank and the Ware family. John Dascanio , senior associate dean for academic and student affairs, commends the Ware family for going “above and beyond” in their efforts to elevate the school's success.

K-State veterinary students receive Army Health Professions Scholarships

Two Kansas State University veterinary students joined the ranks of scholarship recipients in the U.S. Army Veterinary Corps under the Army Health Professions Scholarship Program.

Samantha Rice, first-year student, Tega Cay, South Carolina ; and Henry DeWitt, first-year student, Lawrence ; were selected for this program. The health professions scholarship pays 100 percent of the tuition for a graduate-level health care degree at any accredited medical, dental, veterinary, psychology or optometry program in the United States or Puerto Rico.

First-year students Samantha Rice and Henry DeWitt are the most K-State DVM students to be accepted into the Army's Health Professions Scholarship Program.

“We are proud to support our students who are pursuing military careers during veterinary classes and after graduation,” said Dr. James Roush, associate dean of academic programs and student success. “The Health Professions Scholarship Program is a monumental benefit to its student recipients who then can focus on their veterinary and military training without incurring significant educational debt along that path.”

Samantha's father, a retired officer, administers the oath as part of a hybrid live/virtual ceremony from the Gerald A. Rudisill Army National Guard Readiness Center in Charlotte, North Carolina.

"My interest in the military started at a young age, since I grew up in a military family,” Samantha said. “I've always had an interest in serving in the military and heard about the Veterinary Corps in high school. I thought it would be a great opportunity to serve my country while also fulfilling my passion for veterinary medicine."

Rice’s father, a retired Army officer, administered the military oath to his daughter at a special virtual ceremony held at the Gerald A. Rudisill Army National Guard Readiness Center in Charlotte, North Carolina. DeWitt took his oath in the Boehringer Ingelheim Animal Auditorium in the College of Veterinary Medicine.

“I have wanted to join the Army Veterinary Corps since I began seriously considering a career in veterinary medicine when I was a middle schooler,” Henry said. “I come from a long line of Army officers, and it would mean a lot to carry on that tradition. Following veterinary college, I want to work with small animal and exotic pets, hopefully in a big city, but my ultimate goal is to live day by day and do what sounds fun.”

The scholarship also pays for full tuition for up to four years, required books, equipment and most academic fees, and includes a monthly stipend of $2,608 and a sign-on bonus of up to $20,000. During school breaks, students receive officer's pay while training. After graduation, the students enter active duty and advance in rank to captain. One year of active-duty service is required for each year the students receive the scholarship with a minimum obligation of three years.

New England Fishers Exposed to Rodenticides

A study of fishers from New Hampshire and Vermont, led by Jackie Buckley, VG19 (MCM) (she/her), was published by Environmental Monitoring and Assessment in October 2023. The project, titled "High Prevalence of Anticoagulant Rodenticide Exposure in New England Fishers," revealed that nearly all the animals in the study were exposed to rodenticides.

Buckley conducted the research as a student in Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine's Master of Science in Conservation Medicine (MCM) program.

According to Dr. Chris Whittier , V97 (he/his), director of the MCM program and assistant teaching professor in the Department of Infectious Disease and Global Health , it was a first-of-its-kind study of New England fishers to be published. The project was inspired by a similar published study of fishers in California, where rodenticide exposure was associated with illegal marijuana cultivation.

Buckley collaborated with Whittier and Dr. David Needle, A03, V11, senior veterinary pathologist of the New Hampshire Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory at the University of New Hampshire, among others, to conduct the study.

Working with Needle, Buckley gained permission to access liver samples from deceased fishers collected by the State of New Hampshire Fish and Game and the Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department in 2018 and 2019. The samples were sent to a diagnostic lab at the University of Pennsylvania for analysis.

Using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS), an analytical technique that involves the physical separation of target compounds followed by their mass-based detection, all but one of the 45 animals sampled were positive for exposure to anticoagulant rodenticides (ARs), and 84% were positive for more than one type of AR. The most prevalent ARs detected were diphacinone (96%) and brodifacoum (80%).

Mostly consistent with the findings from the California fishers study, the results help to establish a baseline for exposure to ARs in New England fishers and suggest that ARs could threaten wild mesocarnivore species (medium-sized members of the taxonomic order Carnivora) in the region.

"Fishers are generally carnivores and primarily predators of squirrels, but they will eat other things, including mushrooms," says Whittier. "It's a mystery why so many are getting exposed to rodenticides, but I don't think fishers are nearly as deep woods wild as we'd like to believe."

Intrigued by the surprising results, Whittier is eager to learn how fishers ingest rodenticide. "We don't know how much rodenticide the fishers ate or how that affected them, but I have colleagues from Cornell University who are trapping and collaring fishers to monitor them in the wild," he explains. "Theoretically, it could be one of the ways to answer some of these questions."

Like most MCM students, Buckley submitted a draft of her manuscript as a capstone project of the 12-month intensive program. However, she was motivated by a drive to complete everything and an opportunity to become one of the first MCM students to publish their capstone paper. "Since published papers are a tangible accomplishment for universities, I wanted to complete it so future students may be able to get funding to do this, and it could be considered a measurable goal of the program," she explains. Buckley hopes more students will see it is possible based on her achievement.

From the Bronx Zoo to Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine Growing up in New York City, Jackie was drawn to animals at a young age and regularly visited the Bronx Zoo with her father. "That's where it started for me," she says. After earning a B.S. in biomedical science at the University of New Hampshire, she worked as a zookeeper at Disney's Animal Kingdom. Her fluency in Spanish helped Buckley earn a trip to Colombia, her family's native land. The Disney Conservation funded a one-month trip, where she helped a conservation organization that works with communities and cotton-top tamarins.

"We collaborated with and learned from people of those communities on human behavior change," she explains. "It was a unified front to approach a local issue … a great example of working on a project from a One Health perspective."

Buckley was encouraged to explore master's programs and was excited to find the MCM program at Cummings School. "I had four years of work experience and felt that the MCM program aligned with my passions and to help grow the field of One Health."

She was learning about Geographic Information Systems, research skills, project management, communication, and much more prepared Buckley for the future. This led her to secure the One Health research coordinator position at the Lincoln Park Zoo in Chicago. "I wouldn't have this job if it weren't for the MCM program," she says.

Putting her research experience to use in Chicago Buckley's experience conducting fisher research inspired her to explore the issue of anticoagulant rodenticides in urban animals in the Chicago area. "As urbanization expands, what does that mean for anything that we put into the environment?" she asks. "And how does that affect the animals that also call this area home?"

In her role at the Zoo, Buckley has obtained mammal carcasses from pest management companies to study the effects of rodenticides on mammals. 

Buckley partnered with The Field Museum in Chicago and local universities on this research, testing to learn as much as possible about anything from the diet and underlying diseases of the deceased animals to discovering exposure pathways of ARs. "Using what we learn, we work to provide residents with resources to help them keep wildlife out of their homes," she says. Buckley is writing a paper about her work on rodenticides in urban wildlife. 

She has also collaborated with RUSH University in Chicago and the Abbott Pandemic Defense Coalition to examine environmental samples and conduct testing to prevent the next pandemic. Buckley trapped and took tissue samples from rats in Chicago neighborhoods to survey for zoonotic disease. By learning of threats to animal populations, researchers can determine risks to the human population.

In addition to her role with the Zoo, Buckley is concurrently employed as a radiology manager at Northwestern University, where she manages three pre-clinical radiology labs.

Giving back to Cummings School's MCM program Thankful for her Cummings School education, Buckley also created a one-time crowdsourcing fundraising effort to establish a scholarship fund to support MCM students in their externships. Funding a portion of her Fisher research motivated her to assist future students who may face a similar lack of funding.

"Equity is a big part of my values, so creating that scholarship fund was important to me. It later enabled a student to do an externship with the zoo, where they worked with our team, which was a great experience," she explains, hoping the fund will benefit future MCM students.

Buckley says, "I'm glad that the MCM program is getting more attention and that more students are doing research. It's hard to publish, but the motivation, support, and network that we have make it possible."

Whittier is thankful for Buckley's example as a compassionate and active alum. "Jackie is always finding opportunities for other students, such as her creation of the scholarship," he explains. "And she deserves much credit for getting her paper to the publishing stage. She joins other MCM graduates, helping to blaze a trail for others to follow her lead."
