Sage does not permit the use of author-suggested (recommended) reviewers at any stage of the submission process, be that through the web-based submission system or other communication.

Reviewers should be experts in their fields and should be able to provide an objective assessment of the manuscript. Our policy is that reviewers should not be assigned to a paper if:

  • The reviewer is based at the same institution as any of the co-authors.
  • The reviewer is based at the funding body of the paper.
  • The author has recommended the reviewer.
  • The reviewer has provided a personal (e.g. Gmail/Yahoo/Hotmail) email account and an institutional email account cannot be found after performing a basic Google search (name, department and institution).

Please note that the journal’s editors are not obliged to invite any recommended/opposed reviewers to assess your manuscript.

Authorship For authors submitting to technical or medical journals , papers should only be submitted for consideration once consent is given by all contributing authors. Those submitting papers should carefully check that all those whose work contributed to the paper are acknowledged as contributing authors. The list of authors should include all those who can legitimately claim authorship. This is all those who:

  • Made a substantial contribution to the concept or design of the work; or acquisition, analysis or interpretation of data
  • Drafted the article or revised it critically for important intellectual content
  • Approved the version to be published
  • Agreement to be accountable for all aspects of the work in ensuring that questions related to the accuracy or integrity of any part of the work are appropriately investigated and resolved.

Authors should meet the conditions of all of the points above. Each author should have participated sufficiently in the work to take public responsibility for appropriate portions of the content. When a large, multicentre group has conducted the work, the group should identify the individuals who accept direct responsibility for the manuscript. These individuals should fully meet the criteria for authorship.

Acquisition of funding, collection of data, or general supervision of the research group alone does not constitute authorship, although all contributors who do not meet the criteria for authorship should be listed in the Acknowledgments section. Please refer to the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) authorship guidelines for more information on authorship.

For authors submitting to social science or humanities journals , all parties who have made a substantive contribution to the article should be listed as authors. Principal authorship, authorship order, and other publication credits should be based on the relative scientific or professional contributions of the individuals involved, regardless of their status. A student is usually listed as principal author on any multiple-authored publication that substantially derives from the student’s dissertation or thesis.

Corresponding author The one individual who takes primary responsibility for communication with the journal during the manuscript submission, peer review, and publication process, and typically ensures that all the journal’s administrative requirements, such as providing details of authorship, ethics committee approval, clinical trial registration documentation, and gathering conflict of interest forms and statements, are properly completed, although these duties may be delegated to one or more co-authors.

The corresponding author is the person who signs the publishing agreement on behalf of all of the authors and whose contact details are included on the article. They should be available after publication to respond to critiques of the work and cooperate with any requests from the journal for data or additional information should questions about the paper arise after publication.

Third party submissions Where an individual who is not listed as an author submits a manuscript on behalf of the author(s), a statement must be included in the Acknowledgements section of the manuscript and in the accompanying cover letter. The statements must:

  • Disclose this type of editorial assistance – including the individual’s name, company and level of input
  • Identify any entities that paid for this assistance
  • Confirm that the listed authors have authorized the submission of their manuscript via third party and approved any statements or declarations, e.g. conflicting interests, funding, etc.

Where appropriate, Sage reserves the right to deny consideration to manuscripts submitted by a third party rather than by the authors themselves.

General guidance for authors submitting to medical journals (please view the relevant journal’s submission guidelines for specific requirements)

Acknowledgements

ICMJE recommendations, it is best practice to obtain consent from non-author contributors who you are acknowledging in your paper.

Research ethics and patient consent Medical research involving human subjects must be conducted according to the World Medical Association Declaration of Helsinki

Submitted manuscripts should conform to the ICMJE Recommendations for the Conduct, Reporting, Editing, and Publication of Scholarly Work in Medical Journals , and all papers reporting animal and/or human studies must state in the methods section that the relevant Ethics Committee or Institutional Review Board provided (or waived) approval. Please ensure that you have provided the full name and institution of the review committee, in addition to the approval number.

For research articles, authors are also required to state in the methods section whether participants provided informed consent and whether the consent was written or verbal.

Information on informed consent to report individual cases or case series should be included in the manuscript text. A statement is required regarding whether written informed consent for patient information and images to be published was provided by the patient(s) or a legally authorized representative.

All research involving animals submitted for publication must be approved by an ethics committee with oversight of the facility in which the studies were conducted.

Clinical trials Many Sage journals conform to the ICMJE requirement that clinical trials are registered in a WHO-approved public trials registry at or before the time of first patient enrolment as a condition of consideration for publication. The trial registry name and URL, and registration number must be included at the end of the abstract.

Reporting guidelines The relevant EQUATOR Network reporting guidelines should be followed depending on the type of study. For example, all randomized controlled trials submitted for publication should include a completed Consolidated Standards of Reporting Trials (CONSORT) flow chart as a cited figure, and a completed CONSORT checklist as a supplementary file.

Previous distribution and/or publication

The author should disclose any prior distribution and/or publication of any portion of the material, including where the article has been shared as a preprint, to the Editor for the Editor’s consideration and ensure that appropriate attribution to the prior distribution and/or publication of the material is included. Note that some journals will not consider submissions that have been previously shared as a preprint. Additionally, for journals using a double-anonymized peer review process, if your submission has been shared, the submission and its author list may be discovered by reviewers. Contributor’s publishing agreement Before publication, Sage requires the author as the rights holder to sign a Journal Contributor’s Publishing Agreement. Sage’s Journal Contributor’s Publishing Agreement for traditional subscription journals is an exclusive licence agreement which means that the author retains copyright in the work but grants Sage the sole and exclusive right and licence to publish for the full legal term of copyright. Exceptions may exist where an assignment of copyright is required or preferred by a proprietor other than Sage. In this case copyright in the work will be assigned from the author to the society. This licence enables authors to make articles open access by archiving their article at no charge via the green open access archiving route. Authors who have published in a subscription journal can do this by depositing the version of the article accepted for publication (version 2) in their own institution's repository.

Sage Choice - publishing open access in a subscription journal The Sage Choice program offers authors the option to make their articles freely available upon publication in most subscription-based Sage journals.   • Format: TIFF, JPEG: Common format for pictures (containing no text or graphs). EPS: Preferred format for graphs and line art (retains quality when enlarging/zooming in).
  • Placement: Figures/charts and tables created in MS Word should be included in the main text rather than at the end of the document. Figures and other files created outside Word (i.e. Excel, PowerPoint, JPG, TIFF and EPS) should be submitted separately. Please add a placeholder note in the running text (i.e. “[insert Figure 1.]")
  • Resolution: Rasterized based files (i.e. with .tiff or .jpeg extension) require a resolution of at least 300 dpi (dots per inch). Line art should be supplied with a minimum resolution of 800 dpi .
  • Colour: Please note that images supplied in colour will be published in colour online and black and white in print (unless otherwise arranged). Image Integrity

Figures should be minimally processed and should reflect the integrity of the original data in the image. Adjustments to images in brightness, contrast, or color balance should be applied equally to the entire image, provided they do not distort any data in the figure, including the background. Visual Abstracts

Some journals accept visual abstracts. A graphical abstract is meant to be a clear, quick, and concise pictorial representation of research that has been published in the journal. It is meant to support the written abstract that accompanies all papers submitted for review to the journal. All figures published in the journal, including graphical abstracts, should be of the highest quality and should highlight paper findings.

  • The graphic should be labelled as “graphical abstract” or similar, so that it is clear the file is not an article figure file (e.g. it should not be labelled “Fig1”, “Fig2” etc.)
  • The aspect ratio for the graphic should be 16:9 (the recommended size ratio would be 600px X 338px)

Indian Publications on SARS-CoV-2: A bibliometric study of WHO COVID-19 database

Background & aims

Nowadays, the whole World is under threat of Coronavirus disease (COVID-19). The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in many fatalities and forced scientific communities to foster their Research and Development (R&D) activities. As a result, there is an enormous growth of scholarly literature on the subject. We here in this study have assessed the Indian publications contributions on COVID-19.

WHO is curating global scientific literature on coronavirus since it declared COVID-19 a global pandemic through Global Research Database on COVID-19. The present study analyzed Indian publications on SARS-CoV-2 as found in WHO COVID-19 database. The research data was restricted for the period of March 2, 2020 to May 12, 2020.

The study found that there is a considerable and constant growth of Indian publications on COVID-19 from mid-April. It is interesting to note that, the most prolific authors belong to either AIIMS or ICMR institutes. Delhi state contributed highest number of publications on COVID-19. The AIIMS, New Delhi was the most productive institution in terms of publications. The Indian Journal of Medical Research has emerged as the productive journal contributing highest number of the publications. In terms of research area, the majority of the publications were related to Epidemiology.

Conclusions

The highly cited publications were of evidenced based studies. It is observed that the studies pertaining to virology, diagnosis and treatment, clinical features etc. have received highest citations than general studies on epidemiology or pandemic.

1. Introduction

Coronavirus or novel coronavirus which is taxonomically termed as SARS-CoV-2 and named by World Health organization (WHO) as COVID-19 which emerged from Wuhan city, Hubei Province of China by the end of 2019 has caused unprecedented panic across the world. The rapid transmission of this virus from human to human made the World Health Organization (WHO) to declare this as the public health emergency of international concern and called it as global pandemic [ 1 ]. As on May 14, 2020, globally 4248389 COVID-19 cases have been reported and caused 292046 deaths. Highest human casualty reported from USA with 109121 deaths [ 2 ].

The first case of the COVID-19 pandemic in India was reported on January 30, 2020. As on May 17, 2020, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India has reported 90927 confirmed cases from 33 states with 2872 deaths [ 3 ]. Though India is in complete lockdown since March 24, over the weekend there is a rapid increase in COVID-19 cases in some states in India notably from Maharashtra, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Delhi, Madhya Pradesh and few other states. The rapid increase over the weekend in the month of May has created some kind of panic in India. The government and other civil bodies are making efforts to mitigate the spread of this virus.

Scientific literature on this pandemic is important in order to combat this novel coronavirus. Researchers across the world have been involved in identifying the cause, clinical features and developing possible vaccines for COVID-19. As a result there has been a rapid growth in publishing scholarly literature on the subject. Many academic institutions of international repute and also publication houses involving in scientific publishing industry have made their literature on COVID-19 or novel coronavirus freely available to the scientific community in particular for diagnosis, treatment and preventive strategies against the virus and public in general to create awareness of the infectious virus.

The Bibliometric studies which helps in quantifying the research publication pattern in a particular domain have also been done to assess the research productivity of scientific literature on COVID-19. Bibliometric studies help in identifying the emerging area of research, provide evidence of impact of research through citations, helps in identifying right scholarly literature to consult for study and also for carrying research forward, and it also helpful for policy makers to strategize the potential research areas and funding. There were few bibliometric studies on COVID-19 publications pattern worldwide [ [4] , [5] , [6] ] . . However, there is hardly any studies on country specific. In this regard, here an attempt has been made to look into the Indian contributions to COVID-19 research publications.

2. Data source & methods

The study used World Health organization (WHO) COVID-19 database made available through WHO official website under global research on coronavirus disease (COVID-19) global research database as a data source for identifying the relevant literature on COVID-19. WHO COVID-19 [ 7 ] database is curating global literature publishing on coronavirus since it declared COVID-19 a global pandemic. WHO says that the database represents a comprehensive multilingual source of current literature on the topic. This database extract information from various bibliographic databases, hand searching, and the addition of other expert-referred scientific articles and updates daily.

WHO has made its COVID-19 database searchable freely and data can be exported to. CSV or RIS format. The search terms used for retrieving the data were “COVID-19” and “India”. The “title, abstract and subject” option available on the database website was used to retrieve the documents. The search results retrieved 107 results for the search term. The database was search on May 12, 2020. The data was exported from. CSV format to excel sheet for further refinement of data and analysis. After thoroughly reviewing the data, it was found that there were few repeatable titles and titles not associated with Indian author or authors and articles other than English language were excluded from the study. Only articles written in English were included in the study. In all 89 articles were considered for the final analysis.

The study analyzed the date-wise Indian publication pattern on COVID-19, most prolific authors, institutions with highest publications, states with highest publication based corresponding authors state affiliation, top journals in which Indians have published their publications frequently and document types and research areas, author keywords tree map analysis and highly cited COVID-19 documents of Indian authors. For retrieving the citation data for identifying the top cited documents, Google Scholar citation database was used. In order to determine the research focus or areas of Indian publications on COVID-19, the author used the similar subject categories of earlier study done by Lou et al. [ 8 ] on coronavirus. For identifying journal impact factor, the Scopus CiteScore and SCImago Journal Ranking & Country Ranking was consulted.

3. Results of the study

3.1. date-wise publications pattern.

Fig. 1 indicates the date-wise daily publication pattern of Indian authors on COVID-19. All the publications that have been included in the study were curated from March 03, 2020 to May 08, 2020 in WHO COVID-19 database. As it can be seen from Table- 1 that after mid-April there is a considerable and constant increase in number of publications published from Indian authors on the subject. Given the gravity of the problem and the virus infectivity scale, it is obvious that medical researchers have been looking for potential treatment or vaccines for this virus and this has increased the output of research in India and in other parts of the globe as well. Clinical trials for identifying vaccine or potential drug for COVID-19 is in full swing. The clinicaltrials.gov database has listed 1510 studies on COVID-19. This indicates the increasing interest and rapidity in which research studies have been carried out on this virus.

3.2. Prolific Indian authors engaged in COVID-19 research

Table 1 depicts the most prolific Indian authors who have published three or more articles. Of the 89 articles, only 13 (14.60%) articles were single authored publications remaining articles were authored collaboratively. Nivedita Gupta of Division of Epidemiology & Communicable Diseases, ICMR, New Delhi, topped the list with 6 (6.74%) publications. Following her, Tarun Bhatnagar, National Institute of Epidemiology-ICMR, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, Raman R Gangakhedkar, SidharthaGiri of Division of Epidemiology & Communicable Diseases, ICMR New Delhi have contributed 4 articles each. Other authors with three or more publications can be seen in Table 1 . Anoop Misra is the only outlier in the Table. The other authors listed in the Table either have associated with Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR), New Delhi or National Institute of Virology, Pune which is also part of ICMR. Except Anoop Misra of Fortis CDOC Hospital, New Delhi, the rest of the prolific authors have published their articles in collaboration. Nivedita Gupta, Bhatnagar, Gangakhedkar and Giri have published together and other group consisting of Potdar, Yadav, Abraham and other authors from NIV have published together.

3.3. State-wise Publications Based on corresponding Author’s state affiliation

The state-wise publication profile was created by using corresponding author state affiliation. The geographic heat map ( Fig. 2 ) indicates state-wise publications on COVID-19. Delhi with 20 (22.47%) publications has produced highest number of publications on this subject. West Bengal with 11 (12.36%) publications ranked second in the order followed by Maharashtra with 9 (10.11%) publications. Chandigarh, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu have contributed 4 publications each with 4.49% share among the total output of India. Haryana, Punjab and Rajasthan have published 3 (3.37%) papers each. In Northern part, Delhi, Punjab and smaller state like Chandigarh has performed better. BIMARU states like Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh have published only one article each, Bihar has not published even a single paper on this topic. These states are largest in terms of their population. No research publications on COVID-19 have appeared from North Eastern region. It is right time to increase the research output and have better healthcare facilities across India, instead situating in few pockets.

3.4. Most prolific Indian institutions on COVID-19 research

The bubble chart ( Fig. 3 ) depicts the top 8 highly productive Indian institutions that have published three or more publications on COVID-19 during the reported period. In all, two hundred and forty two institutions have involved in publishing 89 papers. The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi with 8 (3.31%) publications topped the list followed by Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education & Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh with 7 publications (2.89%) and Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), New Delhi and National Institute of Virology, Pune with 6 (2.48%) publications each respectively. National Institute of Epidemiology, Tamil Nadu and Fortis CDOC Hospital for Diabetes and Allied Sciences, New Delhi have 4 (1.65%) publications each to their credit. Armed Force Medical College, Pune and Maulana Azad Medical College, New Delhi have published 3 (1.24%) papers each. It is noteworthy that AIIMS and ICMR are two premier medical institutions in India that have been guiding Government of India in combating the lethal infectious disease COVID-19. It is worth mentioning that, the National Institute of Virology, Pune has recently developed IgG ELISA test kit for coronavirus for speeding the antibody test, which is a first of its kind in India [ 9 ].

3.5. Most prolific journals preferred by Indian authors for publishing their works on COVID-19

The Indian authors have published their publications on novel coronavirus or COVID-19 in 51 journals. Table 2 presents the top journals in which publications were frequently appeared. The Indian Journal of Medical Research (IJMR) has emerged as the top journal with 14 (15.73%) publications followed by Diabetes & Metabolic Syndrome: Clinical Research & Reviews and Science of the Total Environment with 6 (6.74%) publications each. Indian Journal of Ophthalmology has 4 (4.49%) publications to its credits and it’s in third position in the Table. International Journal of Research in Pharmaceutical Sciences and Virus Disease have contributed 3 (3.37%) publications each and stands at fourth position. In all, these 13 journals have published 50 research papers which accounts for 56.19% share among the total publications output. All the journals which are even under Paywall content have made their preprints available freely for the researchers working on SARS-CoV-2. This will help the researchers to speed up their works related to the development of potential vaccines or drugs for this virus.

3.6. Research Area and Document Type of COVID-19 publications

Fig. 4 indicates the research area and the document type of the Indian publications. Of the 89 publications 38 (42.70%) were articles, 13 (almost 15%) were of letters to editor or correspondence, 12 (13.48%) were commentary/opinion/perspective/viewpoints kind of documents, 7 (7.87%) were reviews, 6 (6.74%) were of guidelines/protocol/report related publications, another same number of documents were news items, 5 (5.62%) were editorials and 2 (2.25%) were short communications. If one were to see the document type, all kinds of documents ranging from articles to short communications were published. In terms of research area, of the 89 publications 75 of them were related to Epidemiology, which accounts for 84.27% of the total publications, 6 (6.74%) were related to Diagnosis & Treatment, 4 (4.49%) publications were on virology and 3 (3.37%) publications were of laboratory Examinations related studies and 1 (1.12%)publication was on clinical features of COVID-19 patients. Fig. 4 clearly indicates the Indian research publication pattern with regard to research area. There were lot of studies on Epidemiology and its impact on diabetes, cardiologic patients and pandemic outbreak in India, less on clinical and laboratory examinations of COVID-19 patients and virology which are important for finding drugs or vaccine for the virus.

3.7. COVID-19 publications keyword frequency

The hierarchical tree map ( Fig. 5 ) indicates the frequency of author assigned keywords to the documents that they have published on COVID-19. Keywords are helpful in identifying key domains of research and its growth. The keyword corpus contained 415 words with 208 unique words, same have been used to identify the frequency of keyword occurrences on COVID-19. It is found that the keywords “covid” (34 times), “coronavirus” (23 times), “India” (14 times), “pandemic” (12 times), “sars” (8 times) etc., have the highest frequency of occurrences.

3.8. Top five highly cited Indian Publications on COVID-19

Eighty Nine articles have received 186 citations in all with an average citations of 2.18 per documents. The article entitled “ Chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine in the treatment of COVID-19 with or without diabetes: A systematic search and a narrative review with a special reference to India and other developing countries ” authored by Awadhesh Kumar Singh et al. and “ Prudent public health intervention strategies to control the coronavirus disease 2019 transmission in India: A mathematical model-based approach ” authored by Sandip Mandal et al., and “ Fear of COVID 2019: First suicidal case in India! ” by Kapil Goyal and others have received 28 citations each and topped the Table, followed by the article “ Full-genome sequences of the first two SARS-CoV-2 viruses from India ” authored by Pragya Yadav with 18 citations. Other highly cited articles can be seen in Table 3 .

If one were to simply observe the highly cited documents, it can be seen that publications which are of virology related, diagnosis and treatment or clinical features and simulations or mathematical related studies have received more citation than general studies on epidemiology or pandemic. Eight out of six highly cited publications were appeared in two journals, they are: Diabetes & Metabolic Syndrome: Clinical Research & Reviews and Indian Journal of Medical Research (IJMR).

4. Discussion and conclusion

The results of the study reflects the current Indian scholarly publications on COVID-19 or SARS-CoV-2. Result of this study found some significant insights. The authors who have published more number of publications have all come from either AIIMS or ICMR institutions. Most of these authors have collaborated each other in publishing research papers on COVID-19 and have come from same institutions. This emphasizes that there is need to collaborate with other medical research institutions outside the intra-institute collaborations. It is interesting to note that more than eighty five percent of the articles on coronavirus were collaborative publications. Since COVID-19 is a global pandemic, collaborative research is the need of the hour to mitigate this infectious disease. The state-wise publication pattern indicates that except smaller states like Delhi, Chandigarh, Punjab and Haryana there are no significant publications from North India’s largest states like Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Bihar. This can be attributed for lack of medical or health science education and research institutions in this part. This is high time that the Government of India establishes medical research institutes and strengthen healthcare facilities across India. The study found no publication from North Eastern Region states. This emphasizes need of robust medical infrastructure in this region.

In terms of institutional publications profile, again ICMR, PGIMER and AIIMS and National Institute of Virology, National Institute of Epidemiology and other few have three or more publications. One of the interesting fact is that it is the government medical research institutions that have published large number of publications on COVID-19. AIIMS and ICMR, New Delhi and its other institutions in other parts of India, like National Institute of Virology, Pune and National Institute of Epidemiology, Tamil Nadu have shared largest publications on COVID-19. China and USA are way ahead of India in terms of their research publications on COVID-19 compared to their GDP and publications per million populations [ 10 ]. Central and State Universities which are in large numbers in India and they should accelerate their research capabilities at this time of global health crisis. In terms of journals, it is Indian Journal of Medical Research (IJMR) which has published more number of articles than any other journals, it accounts for almost 16% of total publications. ICMR and its other associated institutions have published largely in this journal on COVID-19.

Indian research is largely done in the area of epidemiology and its impact on diabetes, cardio patients, environmental impact and pandemic outbreak, less studies on clinical prognosis, pharmaceutical interventions, and laboratory based studies or virology related studies on SARS-CoV-2. The highly cited publications were of evidence based studies, for instance “Chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine in the treatment of COVID-19 with or without diabetes: A systematic search and a narrative review with a special reference to India and other developing countries” or “Prudent public health intervention strategies to control the coronavirus disease 2019 transmission in India: A mathematical model-based approach” which have been cited by 28 times and other studies as well. As this pandemic is no way to go early, the research is shifting from basic to experimental studies across the globe [ 6 ], if we see the top highly cited documents in India also gradually studies are shifting more towards evidence based medical research for finding drugs or vaccine at the earliest for this highly infectious disease.

This bibliometric study though provides a bird-eye-view of the publications pattern of Indian authors on COVID-19, one must be a bit cautious in generalizing the results of this study. WHO COVID-19 database curated only expert-referred scientific articles and literature available through LitCOVID database of National Library of Medicine (NLM). It has not included the articles available through preprint servers or central subject repositories such as medRxiv and bioRxiv or arXiv, Research Square or SSRN preprint servers. It is suggested to take up a similar study using dimension. ai or semantic scholar’s CORD-19 dataset which includes articles deposited in preprint servers on COVID-19 to see the different publications pattern of Indian Publications on novel coronavirus or COVID-19 in a much larger scale. The dynamic nature of inclusion of literature to the WHO database on a daily basis is also be considered while generalizing this study.

I n this digital age, the publishing industry is undergoing a landscape change. Print newspapers and magazines are witnessing a decline in subscriptions, whereas print books are navigating the digital era easily. The Indian publishing industry was  estimated to be approximately INR 500 billion in 2019, with a growth potential of INR 800 billion by 2024. The industry contributes to India's economic development, not only by promoting learning and education, but also by creating employment for more than 1.2 million people.

An increase in enrolment rates in institutions, government initiatives on education, and an increase in the overall education expenditure, are all identified as the key growth drivers of the Indian publishing industry.

The industry is a promoter of Indian culture, values and excellence with at least 45% of trade books being sold in regional languages. It maximizes the continued uptake of digital platforms such as e-books in regional languages to reach diverse audiences.

The Indian publishing industry is highly fragmented and competitive with more than 9,000 publishers and 21,000 retailers, and is dominated by educational book publishing with a small share of trade book publishing. The industry also helps with the dissemination of scientific research. This report highlights the existence of a strong correlation between access to sources of published information, such as scientific journals and research papers, and the quality of research output.

The publishing industry in India is making great strides, but it still faces many significant roadblocks such as copyright and piracy issues. Pirated books account for 20-25% of the total market and impact the overall industry negatively, leading to a drop in revenue for publishers and loss of tax collections for the government. To tackle these problems, India needs a strong regulatory ecosystem for reducing confusion about copyright infringement boundaries.

The publishing industry faces inefficiencies across its value chain, including complex distribution channels, high costs and challenges related to ease of doing business, all of which affect its financial sustainability. In comparison with mature publishing markets worldwide, India faces a significant issue across the distribution chain in terms of longer payment receivables cycles.

With regards to the regulatory framework, the publishing industry witnesses a major impact of GST . In the Indian scenario where a zero-tax slab does not exist, the introduction of five per cent GST on books can benefit both the publishing industry and the government.

The COVID-19 pandemic has further disrupted the publishing industry in India. The imposition of strict lockdowns led to limited sales, delayed payments for publishers and a steep collapse in the supply chain. While print book sales have come to a complete halt due to bookstores being closed, the sale of e-books witnessed significant growth in that period.

In mature markets such as Norway, U.K. and U.S, digital formats are becoming key growth drivers for publishing. Print books currently dominate the publishing landscape in India, with digital formats accounting for a mere 10% of the market. Increased penetration of technology into the lives of the Indian population is bound to change the nature of knowledge consumption.

To sustain the changing socio-economic and technological advancements, the publishing industry has innovated new modes of outreach, formats and business structures. New emerging business models such as online retail, subscriptions, bundle packages, open-access resources, and self-publishing provide innovative channels to reach a broader target audience.

The publishing industry plays a vital role in shaping the future of India. Key educational improvement targets and initiatives of the government, the creation of a knowledge society, and the global dissemination of Indian culture and heritage present the crucial areas where the publishing industry and the government can support one another to achieve these targets.

One of the significant opportunities present for the publishing industry in India is the National Education Policy. The policy would lead to a new structure of education and emphasize teacher education and development, increase Higher Education GER and plans to encourage research and innovation by setting up the National Research Foundation (NRF). The publishing industry could thrive by ensuring the effective dissemination of educational content and collaborating with the research community to design, market, and distribute quality journals to a broader audience.

India is poised to become the world’s most populous country this year – surpassing China, which has held the distinction since at least 1950 , when the United Nations population records begin. The UN expects that India will overtake China in April , though it may have already reached this milestone since the UN estimates are projections.

Here are key facts about India’s population and its projected changes in the coming decades, based on Pew Research Center analyses of data from the UN and other sources.

This Pew Research Center analysis is primarily based on the World Population Prospects 2022 report by the United Nations. The estimates produced by the UN are based on “all available sources of data on population size and levels of fertility, mortality and international migration.”

Population sizes over time come from India’s decennial census. The census has collected detailed information on India’s inhabitants, including on religion, since 1881. Data on fertility and how it is related to factors like education levels and place of residence is from India’s National Family Health Survey (NFHS) . The NFHS is a large, nationally representative household survey with more extensive information about childbearing than the census. Data on migration is primarily from the United Nations Population Division .

Because future levels of fertility and mortality are inherently uncertain, the UN uses probabilistic methods to account for both the past experiences of a given country and the past experiences of other countries under similar conditions. The “medium scenario” projection is the median of many thousands of simulations. The “low” and “high” scenarios make different assumptions about fertility: In the high scenario, total fertility is 0.5 births above the total fertility in the medium scenario; in the low scenario, it is 0.5 births below the medium scenario.

India’s population has grown by more than 1 billion people since 1950, the year the UN population data begins. The exact size of the country’s population is not easily known, given that India has not conducted a census since 2011 , but it is estimated to have more than 1.4 billion people – greater than the entire population of Europe (744 million) or the Americas (1.04 billion). China, too, has more than 1.4 billion people, but while China’s population is declining , India’s continues to grow. Under the UN’s “ medium variant ” projection, a middle-of-the-road estimate, India’s population will surpass 1.5 billion people by the end of this decade and will continue to slowly increase until 2064, when it will peak at 1.7 billion people. In the UN’s “high variant” scenario – in which the total fertility rate in India is projected to be 0.5 births per woman above that of the medium variant scenario – the country’s population would surpass 2 billion people by 2068. The UN’s “low variant” scenario – in which the total fertility rate is projected to be 0.5 births below that of the medium variant scenario – forecasts that India’s population will decline beginning in 2047 and fall to 1 billion people by 2100.

People under the age of 25 account for more than 40% of India’s population. In fact, there are so many Indians in this age group that roughly one-in-five people globally who are under the age of 25 live in India. Looking at India’s age distribution another way, the country’s median age is 28. By comparison, the median age is 38 in the United States and 39 in China.

The other two most populous countries in the world, China and the U.S. , have rapidly aging populations – unlike India. Adults ages 65 and older comprise only 7% of India’s population as of this year, compared with 14% in China and 18% in the U.S., according to the UN. The share of Indians who are 65 and older is likely to remain under 20% until 2063 and will not approach 30% until 2100, under the UN’s medium variant projections.

The fertility rate in India is higher than in China and the U.S., but it has declined rapidly in recent decades . Today, the average Indian woman is expected to have 2.0 children in her lifetime, a fertility rate that is higher than China’s (1.2) or the United States’ (1.6), but much lower than India’s in 1992 (3.4) or 1950 (5.9). Every religious group in the country has seen its fertility rate fall, including the majority Hindu population and the Muslim, Christian, Sikh, Buddhist and Jain minority groups. Among Indian Muslims, for example, the total fertility rate has declined dramatically from 4.4 children per woman in 1992 to 2.4 children in 2019, the most recent year for which data is available from India’s National Family Health Survey (NFHS). Muslims still have the highest fertility rate among India’s major religious groups, but the gaps in childbearing among India’s religious groups are generally much smaller than they used to be.

Fertility rates vary widely by community type and state in India. On average, women in rural areas have 2.1 children in their lifetimes, while women in urban areas have 1.6 children, according to the 2019-21 NFHS . Both numbers are lower than they were 20 years ago, when rural and urban women had an average of 3.7 and 2.7 children, respectively.

Total fertility rates also vary greatly by state in India , from as high as 2.98 in Bihar and 2.91 in Meghalaya to as low as 1.05 in Sikkim and 1.3 in Goa. Likewise, population growth varies across states. The populations of Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh both increased by 25% or more between 2001 and 2011, when the last Indian census was conducted. By comparison, the populations of Goa and Kerala increased by less than 10% during that span, while the population in Nagaland shrank by 0.6%. These differences may be linked to uneven economic opportunities and quality of life .

On average, Indian women in urban areas have their first child 1.5 years later than women in rural areas. Among Indian women ages 25 to 49 who live in urban areas, the median age at first birth is 22.3. Among similarly aged women in rural areas, it is 20.8, according to the 2019 NFHS.

Women with more education and more wealth also generally have children at later ages. The median age at first birth is 24.9 among Indian women with 12 or more years of schooling, compared with 19.9 among women with no schooling. Similarly, the median age at first birth is 23.2 for Indian women in the highest wealth quintile, compared with 20.3 among women in the lowest quintile.

Among India’s major religious groups, the median age of first birth is highest among Jains at 24.9 and lowest among Muslims at 20.8.

India’s artificially wide ratio of baby boys to baby girls – which arose in the 1970s from the use of prenatal diagnostic technology to facilitate sex-selective abortions – is narrowing. From a large imbalance of about 111 boys per 100 girls in India’s 2011 census, the sex ratio at birth appears to have normalized slightly over the last decade. It narrowed to about 109 boys per 100 girls in the 2015-16 NFHS and to 108 boys per 100 girls in the 2019-21 NFHS.

To put this recent decline into perspective, the average annual number of baby girls “missing” in India fell from about 480,000 in 2010 to 410,000 in 2019, according to a Pew Research Center study published in 2022 . And while India’s major religious groups once varied widely in their sex ratios at birth, today there are indications that these differences are shrinking.

Infant mortality in India has decreased 70% in the past three decades but remains high by regional and international standards. There were 89 deaths per 1,000 live births in 1990, a figure that fell to 27 deaths per 1,000 live births in 2020. Since 1960, when the UN Interagency Group for Child Mortality Estimation began compiling this data, the rate of infant deaths in India has dropped between 0.1% and 0.5% each year.

Still, India’s infant mortality rate is higher than those of neighboring Bangladesh (24 deaths per 1,000 live births), Nepal (24), Bhutan (23) and Sri Lanka (6) – and much higher than those of its closest peers in population size, China (6) and the U.S. (5).

Typically, more people migrate out of India each year than into it, resulting in negative net migration. India lost about 300,000 people due to migration in 2021, according to the UN Population Division . The UN’s medium variant projections suggest India will continue to experience net negative migration through at least 2100.

But India’s net migration has not always been negative. As recently as 2016, India gained an estimated 68,000 people due to migration (likely to be a result of an increase in asylum-seeking Rohingya fleeing Myanmar). India also recorded increases in net migration on several occasions in the second half of the 20th century.
