ResearcherID is a proprietary unique digital author identifier used in Clarivate products, including Web of Science (WoS) and InCites. WoS is one of the leading sources of bibliometric data.
Prior to 2017, WoS was owned by Thomson Reuters and originally produced by the Institute for Scientific Information. ResearcherID was created in 2008 to identify authors in WoS. In 2019, ResearcherID was integrated with Publons, a 3rd party platform for managing author identity, publications, and peer-reviewing activity.
In 2022, Clarivate transitioned from using Publons for author management to full integration within WoS itself. Now authors can claim their WoS Researcher Profile, including a unique ReseacherID, and use built-in tools to manage it without leaving the database.
Do I Still Need ORCID?
Yes. ResearcherID is limited to Clarivate products.
ORCID is a non-proprietary unique digital identifier increasingly adopted by multiple publishers and grant funders for author identification and disambiguation. ORCID profiles may include information beyond Web of Science. By syncing your WoS Researcher Profile with ORCID, you allow exchange of data and automatic updates of both profiles with your new publications. In addition, WoS and other resources may be searched by ORCID ID.
- Ensure that all your works in WoS are correctly attributed to you.
- Obtain citation counts, h-index, data on journals' impact factors, and citation metrics reports.
- Add variants of your name.
- Link your author record with ORCID and authorize exchange of data between these systems to save time.
- Import verified bibliographic data from WoS to Digital Measures.
- Keep track of your peer reviewer and editor activities in journals indexed by WoS.
All Clarivate products such as WoS, EndNote, InCites and others share the same login credentials.
- From the Libraries' database page, go to Web of Science and register or login in the top right corner of the home page.
- Select the Researchers tab in the search box. Type in your name. Add name variants if applicable.
- Selecta a relevant entry or, if applicable, multiple entries and view as combined record:
- Review your author record and remove incorrectly attributed publications. Organizations and years of affiliation are based on the data supplied by the author to the publisher when the article was published.
- Click on the purple Claim My Record button on the right hand side.
- On the next page, login with your Web of Science credentials or register if you don't have a WoS account. You will be prompted to set up your account, select preferences and authorize connection with ORCID.
After you claim and verify your Author Record, you will see a green checkmark next to your name. The Web of Science ResearcherID and ORCID ID (if you authorized this connection) will appear on your profile.
- Click on Manage button to add missing works if applicable.
- View Times Cited for your works.
- Open a dashboard on the right hand side to analyze your citation activity.
- Click on the journal title to access journal information such as Journal Impact Factor, Category Quartile, and Journal Citation Indicator.
Profile Settings
Go to Edit Profile and review all three tabs to ensure desired settings.
If you authorized ORCID syncing during the initial setup, your ORCID account is linked to Web of Science. Otherwise, you can do it now. You control the exchange of information between ORCID and Web of Science Researcher Profile.
Under Documents, click on the journal title in a citation to access Journal Information.
Please note that a journal may be included in more than one JCFR Category and may have different ranking in different categories.
