College Life Essay

One of the most memorable periods of one's life is considered to be their time in college. It's completely different from life at school. It involves a number of difficulties. Our lives are impacted by our college years—this is also the time of self-discovery and finding a career path for yourself. Here are a few sample essays from ‘College Life’.

College Life Essay

One of the most memorable periods of a person's life is often their time in college. Compared to school life, it is completely different. We are exposed to new experiences and ideas during our time in college. Our schools were a secure environment where we had spent the majority of our time growing up. The move to college is so abrupt that you are no longer shielded by your teachers and schoolmates. Some people believe that college life entails living it up to the fullest and having a fun time. Others devote more time to their studies and take their careers seriously if they want a better future. From school life, college life is a significant adjustment.

College life will present you with numerous hurdles. You must make friends in this new environment where there are many unexpected faces. It teaches us how to interact with others and establish our own opinions. Students acquire their free will in college, which helps them grow more self-assured and collected. We were always dependent on our friends or teachers while we were in school. We learn to be independent in college. It strengthens us and teaches us how to face our own challenges. It also encourages us to take our careers seriously. We make decisions that will impact our future on our own, unlike when we were in school when our parents made those decisions for us.

The college experience for me was full of ups and downs. Even though I got admission to the college of my choice, the transition came as a complete shock to me. It was my first time travelling alone every day and meeting new people. I had a difficult time making new friends and getting familiar with the new professors. The newly found independence was exhilarating though. I could go anywhere I wanted, join any social activities, and become part of different programmes. It felt like there was nothing I couldn’t do in life.

Everyone should enjoy their time in college because it is a great and important period in their lives. We learn a lot from college life, and it also gives us more self-assurance to tackle difficulties later in life. A person should focus on other hobbies and socialise as much as they can during their college years rather than just studying because all of these things aid in a person's overall development.

There are many hurdles that come with being a college student. You're currently in a really strange environment where it would be difficult for you to mix with anyone. Students discover their strengths in college and how to persevere becoming more self-assured and composed.

My College Days Experience

Speaking of my time in college, I had a great time there and experienced some of the best days of my life. I attended Jesus and Mary College, one of Delhi University's most prestigious colleges. From there, I earned my B.A. (Hons.) in Political Science. One of Delhi University's most well-known and esteemed colleges is Gargi College. It is a stunning college with various courses in fields like science, commerce, the arts, and humanities that was constructed in a greater space. It is a girls' college with a stellar academic record.

I was quite nervous when I applied to this college because I didn't know any of the other students. However, I gradually got into college life and met some great friends. I took part in college events and enjoyed everything about my college. I joined the dance and quiz society at my college and took part in a number of dance and quiz competitions held at various Delhi University campuses.

The fact that every day is different is one of the finest aspects about college life. Along with studying, my friends and I enjoyed a variety of other activities in college. We visited different locations, witnessed unique experiences, and gained a great deal of fresh knowledge. In my undergraduate years, the canteen and the common room were special spots since we would hang out there anytime we had free time. Our garden was one of the most beautiful places in our college where we spent countless hours during wintertime. Sometimes, our professors would even take our lectures there when the weather was good.

Annual Fests were another aspect of college life that I cherished. Every year, each college at Delhi University puts on a festival that lasts two to three days. Several competitions take place at this annual festival, which attracts participants from different colleges. Our college hosts a sizable yearly festival every year, in which all of the students take part in numerous competitions and have a great time.

These events give students the chance to interact with new people and demonstrate their talents in front of everyone, boosting their confidence and assisting them in the future. I have taken part in my college's yearly festival for the past three years, and during this time, I have gained the most exposure and experience of my life. I had the time of my life in college, and I will always cherish my recollections of that time.

The differences between school and university

As you start your university journey, here are some important ways that university is different from school and how you’ll have to adapt .

The differences between school and university

If you're starting university this year, you will soon be settling into a new environment, living away from home and having to look after yourself. You will leave behind the lifestyle you have been familiar with since you started secondary education or high school. Things are about to become markedly different, and not having to wear a uniform is not the only thing that will change once you start your journey to university.

So much choice

The key word that defines what the university experience entails is “freedom”. Now it is up to you to decide on your daily habits. Fancy having five bars of chocolate a day? Go for it.

From the beginning of the first term, nobody will check whether you attend your lectures or whether you get eight hours of sleep every night. Autonomy to live your own life will also come with the expectation that you will be responsible enough to take care of yourself. Thus, it is essential that you organise your daily routine early on so that you have enough time to attend your lectures, participate in social activities and clubs and hang out with your friends.

Busting the myths about university

My first tip that I cannot stress enough is to make an effort to attend your lectures. It makes a massive difference, as lecturers often give clues to what material they will include in the final exam, or guidelines on essay layout. The same applies to tutorials, seminars and workshops.

Lecturers, unlike schoolteachers, will not see you every day and might be hard to reach. They won’t always check why you aren’t going to lectures. Tutorials and seminars are therefore a great opportunity to ask questions about content that you have not been able to fully grasp when they are presented in lectures.

On that note, try to keep regular contact with your personal tutor, who will be your main source of academic support and will supply you with tips on various matters relating to studying and campus life. Planning meetings with your tutor are just as much your responsibility as they are theirs, so be sure to keep up with them.

It is also important to be proactive in your learning and to regularly read your notes and leave aside some time at the weekend to go through the week’s lecture content.

And do take a look at the recommended reading, as many courses require supplementary materials in order to fully understand them. Binge revising everything the day before the exam may have been enough to scrape a pass at school, but it is less likely to work at university if you haven't done the reading throughout the term.

Socialising

Of course, you should still make sure you meet people and have fun in your free time. At school, you shared facilities with maybe a few thousand students at most. You were also more likely to be in more classes with your friends and to have only a few areas where you could hang out at lunchtime, so you were pretty much guaranteed to see your friends every day.

However, at university, there are thousands of students across the campus. This has its upsides (the chances are quite high that you meet plenty of people with similar hobbies as you) and its downsides (sometimes it can feel lonely). A good way to find new peers is by joining clubs.

There will be loads of clubs to choose from, focusing on such different areas as sports, cultural activities or food. In the case of the larger clubs, apart from doing events related to their main area of interest, they also organise frequent social gatherings that allow you to meet even more people.

Mental health

It is important to mention that such a sudden change in your life can take a toll on your mental health. There will be times when you can feel stressed because of the workload, scared of failing or simply alone in the world. Being far from your family and closest friends can be hard. Do not be afraid to ask for help.

Starting university can be quite challenging for many people, and struggling to adapt to the new environment is common.

Do not hesitate to speak to counselling services, your personal tutor or your new friends if you’re finding it difficult to cope. Because, at the end of the day, the most important thing is for you to enjoy this period of your life. Good luck, and make the best out of university!

University Life Essay Example

University life is the most memorable and pleasant time. This is the greatest phase for personal grooming and also the longest time period as compared to school or college life, which we always remember in our entire life and can never forget.

I am the blessed one who got the chance to enjoy my university life because not everyone is lucky enough to have experienced it due to various reasons. I still remember the first day of my university, which is full of freedom. There was no fear of teachers because they behaved in a friendly manner. The essential part of the academic period, which is about our friend's circle. It would not be wrong to say the university friends are long-lasting and called true friends ever. I also had a friend group at the university with whom I made my university life simply amazing. It also exposed me to some new experiences and things that I was not familiar with earlier. Good and bad people are everywhere. Similarly, there was some group of students on my campus who would disturb and tease other students, my group of friends used to call them Monsters. The good thing was that I developed a sense of duty and studied hard, realized self-importance, good manners, and dream of becoming a successful person after studies, and focused on my future goals.

Another most fascinating part of the university was tours, different sports, and many more activities that made my time outstanding with sweet memories. I also took bundles of photographs with my friend's circle, teachers, and distinguished guests in those amusing events.

School life is entirely different because we are always dependent on our parents and teachers, they are our guardians, but university life teaches us to be independent, makes us stronger. It also makes us serious about our careers, which can impact our future all by ourselves, but in school life, our parents did it all for us.

I still remember the first and the last day of university, the group of friends, unexpected holidays, annual dinners, and especially that time which I spent in the cafeteria. It was considered the hub of our friend's group, where I enjoyed, ate, and had lots of fun with my friends.

Anticipated Experiences During Our College Life

College Life is one of the most remarkable and lovable times of an individual's life. Unlike School Life, College Life has a different experience, and a person needs to have this experience in his/her life. College Life exposes us to whole new experiences which we always dream of experiencing after our school life. Lucky are those who get the chance to enjoy their college life, as many people don't get this chance due to their circumstances or financial issues. For every person, College Life has a different meaning. While some people spend their college life partying with friends, others become more cautious about their careers and study hard. Whatever the way, every individual enjoys their college life and always wishes to relive that time once it is over.

College Life Experience: How is it different from School Life?

Both school life and college life is the most memorable time of a person's life, but both of them are quite different from each other. While in School life, we learn everything in a protected environment, College Life exposes us to a new environment where we have to learn new things and face new challenges by ourselves. We spend half of our young lives in school, and thus we get comfortable living in that environment. But College Life is for three years only, where every year introduces new challenges and lessons to us. While in school, our teachers and friends always protect and guard us, in college life we form a relationship with our mentors, and they don't protect us all the time as our school teachers did.

Unlike school life, we don't have many limitations in college life, and it is up to us how we want to spend our college life. In college life, we see new faces and experience a unique environment in which we have to mingle ourselves. We make new friends there who stay with us for the rest of our lives. Also, we get a chance to shape our careers asking the right decisions and studying hard. College life is not only about the study but also about the overall development of an individual through various activities and challenges.

In College Life, one gets a chance to make their own decisions. In school life, students get an opportunity to be class monitors. In College Life, an individual gets a chance to nominate himself/herself for more prominent positions like College President, Vice President, Secretary, and Vice Secretary. Apart from deciding the course and stream, an individual gets a chance to build his/her confidence by being a part of various societies and events that take place all year.

Different from School Life, College Life has its importance in a person's life, and one should always enjoy his/her college life.

A Bridge Between Our Student and Adult Lives

College life is considered a bridge in our lives between our school days and our career. It prepares us with the finest academics and platform to generate dreams into realities. It acts as a transition to prepare us to be more independent. In school, we were dependent on our parents. However, we became independent in college regarding studying, traveling, decision-making, and financially independent after college. It is a valued and very smooth transition where we do not realize that we have become independent.

Some Fun Memories from College Life

Firstly, some of the most fun memories of college are “college canteen”. The canteen is supposed to be where most of the students satisfy their hunger and hang out with their friends.

Secondly, it’s the “annual fest” of the colleges. Fests always filled the student’s life with excitement and buzz. It gave new opportunities to explore, compare, compete and provide a platform to showcase their talent. It became a place where students take lots of pictures and record their experiences.

Last but not the least, it’s the college trips. One of the best things in college life is field trips where they can go out and have quality time with their friends and teacher and learning experience. Field trips or just any other college trips are filled with stories and dramas. Every student has their own story to tell about their college trips.

We should enjoy our college days as they cannot be brought back just like our school days.

The Hardest Part of College Life

As a college student, the hardest part of college life was leaving college after graduation or post-graduation. The last days of college were the hardest, knowing that soon you will be departing your friends, the campus, teachers and completely leaving behind a part of life.

My College Days Experience

Talking about my college life, I had enjoyed my college life to the fullest and had some of the best college days of my life. I was a student of one of the most reputed colleges of Delhi University and, i.e. Gargi College. I have completed my B.A. (Hons.) in Applied Psychology from there. Gargi College is one of the renowned and best colleges of Delhi University. Built in a larger area, it is a beautiful college with many courses in streams like Science, Commerce, Arts, and Humanities. With an outstanding academic record, it is a girls college.

When I took admission to this college, I was really afraid as all the people were new to me. But soon, I started enjoying my college life and made some fantastic friends. I loved everything about my college and participated in the events at my college. Even I joined the dance society of my college and participated in many dance competitions that occurred in different colleges of Delhi University.

One of the best things about college life is that you get a new experience every day. In my college life, along with studying, I and my friends enjoyed a lot of other things. We traveled to lots of places, had new experiences, and learned many new things. Our college's canteen was a remarkable place in my college life as whenever we got time, we used to chill in the canteen.

Another thing I loved about my college life is Annual Fests. Every year, every college of Delhi University organizes an annual fest that lasts for 2-3 days. In this annual fest, various competitions happen, and students from various colleges come to be a part of this annual fest. Every year, our college organizes a massive annual fest and all the students of our college participate in various events and enjoy a lot in this fest. These fests allow students to socialize with new people and showcase their talent to everyone which builds their confidence and helps them in their future. I have participated in my college's annual fest for all three years, and I have got the best exposure and experience of my life through this fest. I had the best time of my life in college, and my college life memories will always make me happy.

Life After College

One fine day, you will be silently smiling with wet eyes, looking at the pictures from your college and old friends, and remembering all the good times you had in your college days. That is the beauty of studying in a college. Despite climbing the ladders of success, you will cherish the memories of your college life.

College Life is a remarkable and essential time in a person's life, and everyone should enjoy it. College Life teaches us many things and builds our confidence to face the challenges and struggles in our future. Instead of just focussing on the study, a person must participate in other activities and socialize as much as possible in his/her college life as all these things help in the overall development of a person.

Tips for Writing an Effective Application Essay

How to Write an Effective Essay

Writing an essay for college admission gives you a chance to use your authentic voice and show your personality. It's an excellent opportunity to personalize your application beyond your academic credentials, and a well-written essay can have a positive influence come decision time.

Want to know how to draft an essay for your college application ? Here are some tips to keep in mind when writing.

Tips for Essay Writing

A typical college application essay, also known as a personal statement, is 400-600 words. Although that may seem short, writing about yourself can be challenging. It's not something you want to rush or put off at the last moment. Think of it as a critical piece of the application process. Follow these tips to write an impactful essay that can work in your favor.

1. Start Early.

Few people write well under pressure. Try to complete your first draft a few weeks before you have to turn it in. Many advisers recommend starting as early as the summer before your senior year in high school. That way, you have ample time to think about the prompt and craft the best personal statement possible.

You don't have to work on your essay every day, but you'll want to give yourself time to revise and edit. You may discover that you want to change your topic or think of a better way to frame it. Either way, the sooner you start, the better.

2. Understand the Prompt and Instructions.

Before you begin the writing process, take time to understand what the college wants from you. The worst thing you can do is skim through the instructions and submit a piece that doesn't even fit the bare minimum requirements or address the essay topic. Look at the prompt, consider the required word count, and note any unique details each school wants.

3. Create a Strong Opener.

Students seeking help for their application essays often have trouble getting things started. It's a challenging writing process. Finding the right words to start can be the hardest part.

Spending more time working on your opener is always a good idea. The opening sentence sets the stage for the rest of your piece. The introductory paragraph is what piques the interest of the reader, and it can immediately set your essay apart from the others.

4. Stay on Topic.

One of the most important things to remember is to keep to the essay topic. If you're applying to 10 or more colleges, it's easy to veer off course with so many application essays.

A common mistake many students make is trying to fit previously written essays into the mold of another college's requirements. This seems like a time-saving way to avoid writing new pieces entirely, but it often backfires. The result is usually a final piece that's generic, unfocused, or confusing. Always write a new essay for every application, no matter how long it takes.

5. Think About Your Response.

Don't try to guess what the admissions officials want to read. Your essay will be easier to write─and more exciting to read─if you’re genuinely enthusiastic about your subject. Here’s an example: If all your friends are writing application essays about covid-19, it may be a good idea to avoid that topic, unless during the pandemic you had a vivid, life-changing experience you're burning to share. Whatever topic you choose, avoid canned responses. Be creative.

6. Focus on You.

Essay prompts typically give you plenty of latitude, but panel members expect you to focus on a subject that is personal (although not overly intimate) and particular to you. Admissions counselors say the best essays help them learn something about the candidate that they would never know from reading the rest of the application.

7. Stay True to Your Voice.

Use your usual vocabulary. Avoid fancy language you wouldn't use in real life. Imagine yourself reading this essay aloud to a classroom full of people who have never met you. Keep a confident tone. Be wary of words and phrases that undercut that tone.

8. Be Specific and Factual.

Capitalize on real-life experiences. Your essay may give you the time and space to explain why a particular achievement meant so much to you. But resist the urge to exaggerate and embellish. Admissions counselors read thousands of essays each year. They can easily spot a fake.

9. Edit and Proofread.

When you finish the final draft, run it through the spell checker on your computer. Then don’t read your essay for a few days. You'll be more apt to spot typos and awkward grammar when you reread it. After that, ask a teacher, parent, or college student (preferably an English or communications major) to give it a quick read. While you're at it, double-check your word count.

Writing essays for college admission can be daunting, but it doesn't have to be. A well-crafted essay could be the deciding factor─in your favor. Keep these tips in mind, and you'll have no problem creating memorable pieces for every application.

What is the format of a college application essay?

Generally, essays for college admission follow a simple format that includes an opening paragraph, a lengthier body section, and a closing paragraph. You don't need to include a title, which will only take up extra space. Keep in mind that the exact format can vary from one college application to the next. Read the instructions and prompt for more guidance.

Most online applications will include a text box for your essay. If you're attaching it as a document, however, be sure to use a standard, 12-point font and use 1.5-spaced or double-spaced lines, unless the application specifies different font and spacing.

How do you start an essay?

The goal here is to use an attention grabber. Think of it as a way to reel the reader in and interest an admissions officer in what you have to say. There's no trick on how to start a college application essay. The best way you can approach this task is to flex your creative muscles and think outside the box.

You can start with openers such as relevant quotes, exciting anecdotes, or questions. Either way, the first sentence should be unique and intrigue the reader.

What should an essay include?

Every application essay you write should include details about yourself and past experiences. It's another opportunity to make yourself look like a fantastic applicant. Leverage your experiences. Tell a riveting story that fulfills the prompt.

What shouldn’t be included in an essay?

When writing a college application essay, it's usually best to avoid overly personal details and controversial topics. Although these topics might make for an intriguing essay, they can be tricky to express well. If you’re unsure if a topic is appropriate for your essay, check with your school counselor. An essay for college admission shouldn't include a list of achievements or academic accolades either. Your essay isn’t meant to be a rehashing of information the admissions panel can find elsewhere in your application.

How can you make your essay personal and interesting?

The best way to make your essay interesting is to write about something genuinely important to you. That could be an experience that changed your life or a valuable lesson that had an enormous impact on you. Whatever the case, speak from the heart, and be honest.

Is it OK to discuss mental health in an essay?

Mental health struggles can create challenges you must overcome during your education and could be an opportunity for you to show how you’ve handled challenges and overcome obstacles. If you’re considering writing your essay for college admission on this topic, consider talking to your school counselor or with an English teacher on how to frame the essay.

  • Biotechnology Scope In Pakistan April 6, 2023

While a student is in the university he makes the friends which are long lasting and even true in nature this is because university life is the longest time period in one institute as compared to the college or school life. In schools the students are nor that much sensible to understand the trust and the strength of the friendship but in universities the students are far more mature to understand the good and bad and to find the best people for themselves which will walk with him or her all their lives. So this is the time when the students make their interaction count for rest of their entire life.

The other very major part of the university life is that the majority of the students become self-earning as they indulge themselves in any part time job or internships so they become stronger financially and can now invest and make expenses on their own. This aspect has two impacts on the personal life of the student the positive impact is that he becomes self-earned and independent so can sue his earning on either entertainment, friends gatherings, moving outs or even on the family but the negative aspect is that the student is left with very little spare time, because managing the job with the university studies makes it hard for him to get free time for his entertainment and fun.

The university life is one of the time periods which an individual remembers all his life and if it is being spent seriously and focused on his primary and basic responsibilities than they will appreciate their university life and will consider it as the blessing of GOD but if this time is being wasted in unproductive activities and the students lose their focus than the individual will curse this time span all his life.

How the SAT Changed My Life

An illustration of a man lying underneath a giant SAT prep book. The book makes a tent over him. He is smiling.

By Emi Nietfeld

Ms. Nietfeld is the author of the memoir “Acceptance.”

This month, the University of Texas, Austin, joined the wave of selective schools reversing Covid-era test-optional admissions policies, once again requiring applicants to submit ACT or SAT scores.

Many colleges have embraced the test-optional rule under the assumption that it bolsters equity and diversity, since higher scores are correlated with privilege. But it turns out that these policies harmed the teenagers they were supposed to help. Many low-income and minority applicants withheld scores that could have gotten them in, wrongly assuming that their scores were too low, according to an analysis by Dartmouth. More top universities are sure to join the reversal. This is a good thing.

I was one of the disadvantaged youths who are often failed by test-optional policies, striving to get into college while in foster care and homeless. We hear a lot about the efforts of these elite schools to attract diverse student bodies and about debates around the best way to assemble a class. What these conversations overlook is the hope these tests offer students who are in difficult situations.

For many of us, standardized tests provided our one shot to prove our potential, despite the obstacles in our lives or the untidy pasts we had. We found solace in the objectivity of a hard number and a process that — unlike many things in our lives — we could control. I will always feel tenderness toward the Scantron sheets that unlocked higher education and a better life.

Growing up, I fantasized about escaping the chaos of my family for the peace of a grassy quad. Both my parents had mental health issues. My adolescence was its own mess. Over two years I took a dozen psychiatric drugs while attending four different high school programs. At 14, I was sent to a locked facility where my education consisted of work sheets and reading aloud in an on-site classroom. In a life skills class, we learned how to get our G.E.D.s. My college dreams began to seem like delusions.

Then one afternoon a staff member handed me a library copy of “Barron’s Guide to the ACT .” I leafed through the onionskin pages and felt a thunderclap of possibility. I couldn’t go to the bathroom without permission, let alone take Advanced Placement Latin or play water polo or do something else that would impress elite colleges. But I could teach myself the years of math I’d missed while switching schools and improve my life in this one specific way.

After nine months in the institution, I entered foster care. I started my sophomore year at yet another high school, only to have my foster parents shuffle my course load at midyear, when they decided Advanced Placement classes were bad for me. In part because of academic instability like this, only 3 percent to 4 percent of former foster youth get a four-year college degree.

Later I bounced between friends’ sofas and the back seat of my rusty Corolla, using my new-to-me SAT prep book as a pillow. I had no idea when I’d next shower, but I could crack open practice problems and dip into a meditative trance. For those moments, everything was still, the terror of my daily life softened by the fantasy that my efforts might land me in a dorm room of my own, with endless hot water and an extra-long twin bed.

Standardized tests allowed me to look forward, even as every other part of college applications focused on the past. The song and dance of personal statements required me to demonstrate all the obstacles I’d overcome while I was still in the middle of them. When shilling my trauma left me gutted and raw, researching answer elimination strategies was a balm. I could focus on equations and readings, like the scholar I wanted to be, rather than the desperate teenager that I was.

Test-optional policies would have confounded me, but in the 2009-10 admissions cycle, I had to submit my scores; my fellow hopefuls and I were all in this together, slogging through multiple-choice questions until our backs ached and our eyes crossed.

The hope these exams instilled in me wasn’t abstract: It manifested in hundreds of glossy brochures. After I took the PSAT in my junior year, universities that had received my score flooded me with letters urging me to apply. For once, I felt wanted. These marketing materials informed me that the top universities offered generous financial aid that would allow me to attend free. I set my sights higher, despite my guidance counselor’s lack of faith.

When I took the actual SAT, I was ashamed of my score. Had submitting it been optional, I most likely wouldn’t have done it, because I suspected my score was lower than the prep-school applicants I was up against (exactly what Dartmouth found in the analysis that led it to reinstate testing requirements). When you grow up the way I did, it’s difficult to believe that you are ever good enough.

When I got into Harvard, it felt like a miracle splitting my life into a before and after. My exam preparation paid off on campus — it was the only reason I knew geometry or grammar — and it motivated me to tackle new, difficult topics. I majored in computer science, having never written a line of code. Though a career as a software engineer seemed far-fetched, I used my SAT study strategies to prepare for technical interviews (in which you’re given one or more problems to solve) that landed me the stable, lucrative Google job that catapulted me out of financial insecurity.

I’m not the only one who feels affection for these tests. At Harvard, I met other students who saw these exams as the one door they could unlock that opened into a new future. I was lucky that the tests offered me hope all along, that I could cling to the promise that one day I could bubble in a test form and find myself transported into a better life — the one I lead today.

Emi Nietfeld is the author of the memoir “ Acceptance .” Previously, she was a software engineer at Google and Facebook.

UT, ACC, Texas Institute for Electronics to Launch Semiconductor Training Center to Meet Industry Workforce Needs

UT Austin Staff

AUSTIN, Texas — A new partnership among The University of Texas at Austin, Austin Community College District and Texas Institute for Electronics (TIE) will make Central Texas a premier hub for comprehensive workforce development that will fuel the needs of America’s semiconductor industry. The joint program will serve as a one-stop shop for an industry in need of skilled labor, creating seamless and coordinated education pathways between UT and ACC to address every skill set on the semiconductor workforce continuum, ranging from equipment technician to semiconductor engineer.

Under the partnership, UT, ACC and TIE will:

  • Develop a joint Semiconductor Training Center (STC) , allowing students at UT, ACC and across the nation to receive hands-on technical training combined with academic theory. It also will host programs designed to transition current workforce talent into the semiconductor industry and advance the careers of incumbent workers.
  • Develop Semiconductor Curriculum & Credentialing. Leveraging faculty members from both institutions along with industry experts, this initiative will build stackable skill-based microcredentials and related education activities, with plans to develop K-12 partnerships.

The joint initiative will help build the pipeline of skilled workers at all levels that are necessary to support an estimated 115,000 new semiconductor jobs expected to be added to the U.S. economy by 2030. A recent report from the Semiconductor Industry Association and Oxford Economics found 67,000 of those new jobs are at risk of going unfilled because of an undersized workforce and lack of training programs.

“UT has a rich history as a leader in the semiconductor industry not only in Texas, but across the country, helping position the U.S. to compete globally with the most advanced technology and qualified workforce,” said President Jay Hartzell. “America needs a skilled and sustained workforce to bolster our supply chain and mitigate disruptions. Our partnership will help achieve this by bringing together our exceptional faculty, students and top-ranked programs with Austin Community College’s nationally renowned workforce training, all in the heart of Austin’s well-established innovation ecosystem.”

Texas leads the nation in semiconductor manufacturing and is tied among states with the second-most semiconductor workers. In Central Texas, semiconductor and the broader advanced manufacturing workforce demand is expected to continue to rise sharply due to the growth and relocation of industry leaders including Samsung Austin Semiconductor, Applied Materials, NXP Semiconductors, Tokyo Electron and Tesla.

“The semiconductor industry is a critical part of our local economy, and it’s growing. ACC is already recognized as one of the leading institutions in the nation for building curricula and programs that support this industry. We have the capacity to create just-in-time programs that support employers and workers, and we want to develop a model that can be scaled across the nation. ACC is proud to partner with UT to take this work to a new level,” said ACC Chancellor Russell Lowery-Hart. “When we can collaborate through programs like the STC, we’re giving our students the best of both worlds — access to one of the nation’s top research universities and ACC’s advanced teaching and training facilities.”

As part of the agreement TIE will commit initial funding of $3.75 million to develop the STC and will provide research opportunities for students and educators at its state-of-the-art chip fabrication facilities at UT’s J.J. Pickle Research Campus and its semiconductor plant on Montopolis Drive, originally home to Sematech. TIE has 84,000 square feet of clean-room space. The agreement will also leverage facilities of industry partners.

“We and our academic and industry partners understand this is a pivotal moment for America’s semiconductor industry and that we have a unique concentration of some of the world’s top talent, facilities, experience and funding to establish a sustainable workforce and establish long-term leadership,” said John Schreck, CEO of TIE, a partnership between the State of Texas, semiconductor and defense electronics companies, national labs, and 16 Texas-based academic institutions. “Just as important, our partnership is unified behind this goal, and we are ready to build out this regional ecosystem.”

The Texas Legislature has appropriated $552 million to TIE, paving the way for its pursuit of federal CHIPS Act funding.

UT and ACC are at the forefront of producing an exceptionally skilled workforce to meet the semiconductor industry’s needs. Building on its established national leading programs, this month UT announced a new Master of Science in Engineering with a major in semiconductor science and engineering. The program will launch in Fall 2025 and aims to help meet the demand for semiconductor scientists and engineers through hands-on experience in four core areas: manufacturing, circuits and systems, heterogeneous integration, and devices.

In Fall 2023, ACC developed the Semiconductor Technician Advanced Rapid Start (STARS) curriculum as a rapid upskilling program intended to bridge incumbent workers with foundational technical skills to a manufacturing technician role. This program was developed in collaboration with the Austin Regional Manufacturing Association and leaders in the regional semiconductor industry — including Samsung Austin Semiconductor, NXP, Tokyo Electron, Infineon and Applied Materials. The STARS program provides a customized blend of theoretical and hands-on training necessary for these positions, all in a condensed four-week, full-time schedule.

“Austin Community College is a regional leader for workforce development training programs that build direct paths for students to train and get the skills needed to meet the growing needs for Central Texas’ manufacturing workforce,” said Jon Taylor, corporate vice president, Samsung Austin Semiconductor. “Partnerships with ACC and our peers in the industry are vital in creating a unified approach to foster opportunities to achieve and sustain economic prosperity.”

The first training programs expected to launch through the STC could begin as early as January 2025.

UTA study: Vaccination mistrust still widespread

Four years after COVID-19 began to spread worldwide, a University of Texas at Arlington social worker says work still needs to be done to address the importance of getting vaccinated.

Research led by Hui Huang, associate professor in the School of Social Work, shows some apprehension remains among pregnant woman in getting vaccinated against the virus. The findings are published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health .

Huang and her colleagues took an innovative approach in gathering feedback from pregnant women by partnering with the app Count the Kicks to analyze pregnancy survey results from women who had recently given birth. For the study, the team took a close look at responses regarding beliefs and behaviors related to COVID-19 vaccinations and found about two-thirds of respondents had been vaccinated.

“Previous studies focused on asking for patients’ willingness to get the vaccine but did not explore if they actually received it,” Huang said. “This was one innovative aspect of our work.”

In addition, the findings revealed no relationship between vaccination and birth outcome, reinforcing the scientific community’s belief that the COVID-19 vaccine is safe for expecting moms.

When those who were not vaccinated were asked why, their primary concerns were safety of their unborn child, lack of trust in the vaccine and a concern over side effects. Results also revealed that vaccination rates are lower among African American mothers. Huang suspects, based on empirical evidence from other studies, that this is due to a feeling of distrust that some in the African American community have toward the medical system.

“They have historical trauma with the medical system due to unethical research and medical practice done to the community,” she said. “Another concern is social media misinformation. Those concerns could be among the reasons why minority groups are more hesitant to get vaccinated.”

Huang says a team effort is still needed to not just stress the importance of the vaccine and the fact that it is safe, but also to increase its accessibility in all communities.

“We need to get the information out there,” she said. “We can do this, for example, through public awareness campaigns engaging trusted spokespersons, especially those from minority populations who can demonstrate the vaccine is safe to take.”

Hagler Fellow To Study Connection Between Pig Reproduction, Cancer Resistance

A photo of a man wearing glasses standing outside.

For the next three to five years, the Texas A&M School of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences (VMBS) will partner with one of the top evolutionary biologists in the world who is researching whether swine reproduction holds the key to the next wave of cancer research.

Hagler Fellow Dr. GĂŒnter Wagner , the Alison Richard Professor Emeritus of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at Yale University, is renowned for his work on the evolution of genes and gene regulatory networks. His current research focuses on comparative reproductive biology.

“Because of the way that some farm animals reproduce, cancer doesn’t spread as quickly through their bodies like it can in humans,” Wagner said. “We are hopeful that studying their reproductive biology will lead to new treatments for both people and animals.”

Leading The Way

For Wagner, who will be partnering with both the VMBS and Texas A&M AgriLife, the Hagler fellowship is an opportunity to study farm animals, like pigs, up close, since pigs are more accessible at Texas A&M than in other research universities.

“Texas A&M is also one of the main centers of non-biomedical reproductive biology,” Wagner said. “I’m a zoologist by training, but I’ve been focusing on comparative reproductive biology only for the last 10 to 15 years. These farm animals that I study now are very interesting because they have an unusual form of female reproduction that is quite different from mice and humans.

“As we understand it now, the kind of placenta that humans have — where the baby is deeply invasive into the tissue of the mother — is considered a more primitive form of reproduction,” he said. “In contrast, many farm animals have a non-invasive placenta, which means that the fetus is inside the mother’s body, but its tissues and fluids are less deeply intertwined with hers.”

The ability to keep a fetus separate from the mother’s own tissue has surprising ramifications for cancer research.

“What I found in my lab and with the help of collaborators is that animals that have less-invasive placenta are also less vulnerable to cancer spread,” Wagner said. “They get cancer, but it stays local most of the time. Understanding how that is possible is potentially important for treating cancer in humans and other animals.”

Making Connections

The Hagler Institute was founded to drive collaboration between the world’s top researchers and enrich the intellectual climate at Texas A&M.

Getting to collaborate with important researchers in his field was one of the major draws for Wagner, who will be working alongside Dr. Gregory Johnson, a professor in the VMBS’ Department of Veterinary Integrative Biosciences, and Dr. Fuller Bazer, a distinguished professor in the Texas A&M Department of Animal Sciences.

“Dr. Bazer was the one who figured out the recognition of pregnancy mechanisms for farm animals — for example, how the body of the mother knows that she’s pregnant and changes her physiology appropriately to support the growth of the fetus,” Wagner said. “Dr. Johnson is also a leading researcher in reproductive biology, especially in pigs and sheep.

“It is exciting to have the opportunity to work with so many outstanding experts important to my area of interest in one place,” he said.

School of Criminal Justice College of Social Science

Giving voice to youth incarcerated in adult facilities.

March 27, 2024

In many states across the country, youths are serving life or near-life sentences in adult facilities. Until recently, little was known about the experiences of these incarcerated youths. However, a team of researchers from the MSU School of Criminal Justice has been working to change that.

Dr. Cait Cavanagh , the lead researcher on the team, says this project is filling a void in justice system research by giving voice to youth in adult facilities.

“Justice system research that does not include the voices of those impacted is incomplete; we must allow these individuals the opportunity to advocate for themselves and their experiences to provide a more holistic understanding of the impacts of youthful incarceration.”

Youth and adult facilities differ greatly from one another, which creates a polarizing experience for youth incarcerated in youth facilities compared to youth incarcerated in adult facilities. While youth facilities are focused on rehabilitation and have a range of services available, such as education, adult facilities generally have fewer services available and are focused primarily on punishment.

The difference in the aims of youth vs adult facilities was a cause of concern for the researchers regarding incarcerated youth. The research team notes that handing down lifelong, or near lifelong, sentences to youth and placing them in adult facilities did not allow for incarcerated youth to undergo transformative rehabilitation and aspire to contribute to society in a positive way in the future.

Researchers found that the incarcerated youths were often ignorant of their legal rights, were less culpable than their adult counterparts, and were often involved in dysfunctional environments prior to incarceration. The researchers also found a concerning trend in that many youths discussed vulnerability to violence and abuse during incarceration.

Dr. Cavanagh says “As a developmental psychologist and juvenile justice researcher, I found it surprising the clarity with which letter writers retrospectively described their own developmental immaturity at the time of their offense. Although perhaps less surprising, I was also struck by the massive loss of human potential instigated by incarceration for life or near-life sentences; many of the letter writers already are and aspired to continue being a positive force to those around them.”

Looking ahead, the research team hopes to translate their findings into actionable policy recommendations, including early intervention strategies, raising the age of majority, and enhancing rehabilitative services for incarcerated youth.
