Today, self-reliance and New Deal-inspired progressivism are collectively as important as ever in a swiftly-changing world. Can the two co-exist?

Self-reliance is too often read as a celebration by Emerson of the secular, self-reliant individual. My reading has Emerson discovering a religiosity which does not depend on an adherence to a particular religious tradition or supernatural revelation. I call this religious self-reliance. Emerson, influenced by James Marsh and William Ellery Channing, rejects the theology which in part follows Locke’s empiricism and leaves the individual in need of spiritual guidance through traditional forms of divine Revelation. Instead, Emerson turns to Reason, identified as the moral or religious sentiment. The Over-soul which the moral sentiment uncovers represents the ultimate grounding of the self, and its revelation serves as the basis for religious self-reliance.

How is one to navigate between a thinking grounded in the individual and a claim for communality? In Emerson, this kind of difficulty comes into view in familiar sentences such as “Speak your latent conviction, and it shall be the universal sense.” How does the relationship between the personal and the universal look and function? In this paper, it is argued that Emerson may bring us clarity regarding the difficulties we are facing when it comes to questions about how we are to frame human personality, morality and knowledge in the field of tension created by distinctions such as private/public, original/conventional, particular/universal. A crucial thought in this line of reasoning is that that the critical philosophy Emerson pursues is also self-critical. The idea that true critique is self-criticism is then used as a tool to make clear that there’s no fundamental gap to be bridged here. The self-critical dimension makes clear the ways in which coming to share a world – learning from one’s teachers for example – is a matter of earning (shared) words. Therefore, Emersonian self-cultivation does not stand apart from the cultivation of something shared, but should be seen as a form of path towards a shared world.

This article discusses the similarities in developing self-reliance by the two main characters in two novels, Hemingway’s The Old Man and the Sea (i.e., Santiago) and Defoe’s Robinson Crusoe (i.e., Robinson Crusoe). Qualitative analysis with the frame of dynamic structuralism theory of Jan Mukarovsky discovered that both protagonist characters, Santiago and Crusoe, are doing several things as their ways to rebuild and develop their self-reliance in coping with several obstacles. To develop his self-reliance, Santiago recollects his past experiences, identifies himself as a powerful figure, and recognizes certain factors supporting his struggle, while Crusoe performs certain efforts to extend his survival, and recognizes God’s power in his life. Despite their different ways to build self-reliance, the two figures both show optimism to survive their odd and unfortunate yet valuable experience.
