Grammar: When to Use Do, Does, and Did

Verbs are essential to creating complete sentences, as they help us express physical actions ( She jumped in the puddle) , mental actions ( He thought about puppies) , and states of being ( I am hungry) .

There are several types of verbs that can each be written in different tenses, so they can be tricky to work with, especially if English isn’t your first language . We’ve put together a guide to help you use one of the most common verbs, do , in your writing . Read on below to learn more!

Action Verbs

As the name suggests, action verbs are used to express actions completed by the subject of a sentence. The base verb do is conjugated according to the tense:

1. Present Tense

In the present tense, do takes the form do or does, depending on the subject:

Consider the following examples:

We do our homework every night.

   She does her homework every night.

2. Past Tense

In the simple past tense , the base verb do takes the form did with all subjects:

   We did our homework last night.

   She did her homework last night.

Auxiliary Verbs

Auxiliary , or helping verbs, are used with another base verb to create negative sentences, questions, or add emphasis. Here’s how do should be used as an auxiliary verb:

1. Negative Sentences

Following the same subject–verb pairings introduced above, we combine the auxiliaries do , does , and did with the adverb not to create negative sentences:

   We do not do our homework every night.

   She did not do her homework last night.

Note that we can combine the auxiliary and the adverb to create the contractions don’t , doesn’t , and didn’t . You simply remove the space between the two words and replace the letter o in not with an apostrophe (’).

Contractions are more common in conversations and informal writing and typically shouldn’t be used in formal writing (e.g., academic or business).

2. Questions

To create questions, the auxiliary is combined with the infinitive of another verb in this way: auxiliary verb + subject + infinitive verb .

●  Simple present questions:

Do they sell children’s books?

Does he speak English?

Note that the third person verb speaks isn’t spelled with the s when paired with the auxiliary to form a question.

●  Simple past questions:

Did you buy anything at the bookstore?

Did he learn how to speak English?

Note that did indicates the past tense, so the main verbs don’t also take the past tense (i.e., bought and learned ).

3. Emphasis

In positive sentences, we can also combine the auxiliaries do , does , and did with the main verb to emphasize that something is true:

   We do sell children’s books.

   He did learn to speak English.

Try saying these sentences aloud and adding emphasis to the auxiliary terms with your tone. It adds a dramatic effect!

Present Simple Tense

We use the Present Simple Tense to talk about regular activities, habits, or facts.

I play tennis on Saturday.

I played tennis on Saturday in the past.

I will play tennis on Saturday in the future.

I wake up at 7:00am.

It rains in June.

Making the Present Simple Tense

+ I play tennis on Saturday. s=‘I’ + v=‘play’

- I don’t play tennis on Saturday. s=‘I’ + ‘don’t’ + v=‘play’

? Do you play tennis on Saturday? ‘do’ + s=‘you’ + v=‘play’

The verbs change when the subject is “he”, “she”, or “it”. For most verbs we add -s to the end.

The verbs change like this:

- He doesn’t play tennis on Saturday. =‘he’ + ‘doesn’t’ + v=‘play’

Activity 3.1: Conversation

Directions: Ask your partner or group the following questions about your morning routines. A “routine” is a habit you usually do or a series of actions you do regularly.

• What do you do before school?
• Do you ever wake up late? Do you usually wake up early?
• Do you drink coffee or tea in the morning?
• Do you do your homework in the morning, in the afternoon, in the evening, or at night?
• How long does it take for you to get ready in the morning?
• How long does it take you to get to campus? Do you live close or far from campus?
• How do you get to campus? Drive? Bike? Bus? Walk? Carpool? Dropped-off?

Directions: Read this story out loud with a partner. One person reads a paragraph, then the other person reads the next paragraph. When you are finished, read the story again. This time, read the paragraphs, you did not read.

Yuri & Palani

       Hi! My name is Yuri. I am from Ukraine. I am a student at Clackamas Community College. I have a roommate. His name is Palani. He is from Laos. We live together, but we are very different.

We are friends, so I always save him a seat next to me. We sit with Jacques and Ana. They arrive early too. Class begins at 8:00 am.

       How often do you arrive late to class? Are you similar to me, or are you more similar to Palani?

Activity 3.2: Comprehension

Directions: Please write the answers to the questions in complete sentences.

Uses of the Simple Present

The simple present is used for talking about routines, habits, and repeated activities in the present time. We use the simple present to talk about facts, which are always true. Time expressions (e.g., every day, in the summer ) and adverbs of frequency (e.g., never, sometimes, always ) signal the simple present tense.

What is a routine? Something you do every morning, every week, every year.

• I brush my teeth two times a day.
• You go to the gym three times a week.
• He makes breakfast for my children every morning.
• She starts work at 7:00 am.
• They do laundry every Saturday.

What is a habit? Something you do regularly.

• My husband reads in bed before he goes to sleep.
• My cat wakes me up on Saturdays because he is hungry.

What is a repeated action? Action that we do more than once.

• I shop at Winco (not every week, but I like to go there).
• She wears shorts in the summer.

What is a fact? Something that is always true.

• The moon revolves around the earth.
• She has two children.
• Vegetables are healthy.
• Water boils at 212 degrees Fahrenheit.

Forms of the Simple Present

Affirmative statements in the simple present.

You must add an -s to the verb with the subjects he , she , and it .

Adverbs of Frequency with the Simple Present

Adverbs of frequency (AoF) let us talk about how often we do something.

How often do you come to class?      I always come to class!

How often do you shop at Fred’s?     I often shop at Fred’s.

Study the chart below to learn the meanings of the following adverbs.

Adverbs of Frequency (AoF) with the BE Verb 

With the BE verb, the AoFs are added between BE and the rest of the sentence. You will see in the next section that this is different with other verbs.

Adverbs of Frequency with Other Verbs

But, what if we want to say how often we do some activity? In that case, we don’t use the BE verb. We use another verb, like eat, sleep, cook, drive, or talk.

Instead of adding the AoF after the verb, like we did with the BE verb, we add it before the verb. We do this because we are saying how often the activity of the verb happens.

subject + AoF + verb + rest of sentence

We use the AoF to talk about how often or how frequently something happens.

How often do you eat breakfast? I always eat breakfast.

In the sentence above, we are saying how often we eat breakfast (always).

How often does he cook dinner? He usually cooks dinner.

In the sentence above, we are saying how often he cooks dinner. (usually).

How often do they walk to school? They never walk to school.

In the sentence above, we are saying how often they walk to school (never).

Activity 3.13: Game

Directions: The purpose of this game is to practice using adverbs of frequency. Your teacher will give you some AoF game cards (often, sometimes, never).

• Stand up and find a partner.
• Ask your partner a question. Begin the sentence “How often…”
• The partner answers the question using an AoF.
• If your partner answers your question using the AoF that you have in your hand, give your partner the card.
• If your partner answers using an AoF that you don’t have, then change to another student and try again.
• You can only ask two questions before you need to change partners.
• You can only talk to the same person after you have talked with all your other classmates.
• Talk to as many partners as you can. When you have no more cards, sit down.

The goal of the game is to give away all of your cards.

Student 1: How often do you eat french fries for breakfast?

Student 2: I never eat french fries for breakfast.

(Student 1 gives the card saying “never” to Student 2)

Student 1: How often do you do your homework?

Student 2: I usually do my homework.

(Student 1 doesn’t have a ”usually” card. Student 1 changes partners and tries again.)

Pronunciation and Spelling: Adding -s and -es

We add -s and -es for two reasons:

1. The word is a noun, and we are making it plural.

2. The word is a verb, and it agrees with the subject (he, she, or it–3rd person singular)

Pronunciation

In English the same letters can have different sounds. For example, the letter “c” can sound like /k/ in cat , but it can also sound like /s/ in ice .

For words that end in -s or -es, there are three different sounds: /s/, /z/, and /ɪz/. We can predict how the -s or -es ending will sound by the last sound of the word before we add the -s or -es ending.

/θ/=th as in bath   /ð/=th as in that   /ʤ/=j as in judge    /tʃ/=ch as in church     /ʃ/=sh as in wash

Some verbs can be combined with an infinitive (to + verb) to express a different meaning or opinion about the activity.

Negative Statements in the Simple Present

Negatives with the be verb, activity 3.22: writing.

Negatives with All Other Verbs

Using auxiliary verbs.

There are three auxiliary verbs in English: BE, DO, and HAVE. We will learn about BE and DO in this class. We will learn about using HAVE as an auxiliary in the next level. You have already seen the first of our three auxiliary verbs, BE, in Chapter 2. We combine the BE verb with the -ing form of the verb to create the present progressive (an action happening now).

When we make negative sentences with other verbs, we use the auxiliary verb, DO. It has two forms: do and does . The negative not comes after do or does and is followed by the base form of the main verb.

The base form is the infinitive without the to . Instead of “to sing” (infinitive), the base form is sing . Do not add -s to the base verb. Let’s look at an example sentence.

He         does           not        sing               in the shower.

• He is the subject
• Does is the auxiliary verb. Do/Does agrees with the subject (3rd person singular: add -es).
• Sing is the main verb in the base form. Do not add -s to the main verb.

Negative contractions.

To make negative contractions, we contract the auxiliary verb and the negative.

Yes/No Questions & Short Answers

Yes/No questions mean that the answer to the question is either yes or no . These questions don’t use wh- question words. Remember, when we use an auxiliary verb, the main verb is in the base form. The auxiliary verb goes before the subject and the main verb goes after the subject.

Short answers.

Short answers are quick answers to yes/no questions. Remember that if the question uses the BE verb, use the BE verb in your answer. If the auxiliary DO is used in the question, then use DO in the answer.

Do you have cats?    Yes, I do.

Are you a teacher?    Yes, I am.

Do you drink coffee in the morning?      Yes, I do.

Does he drink coffee in the morning?    No, he doesn’t.

We have seen several lists of wh- question words in previous chapters. Here is a bigger list. You can practice making questions with the new words and review the ones you have seen in Chapters 1 and 2.

We form information questions (sometimes called wh- questions) the same as yes/no questions. Add the question word (who, what, where, when, what time, etcetera) to the beginning of the question.

The Spring Equinox Is Here. What Does That Mean?

Spring is almost here—officially, at least.

The vernal equinox arrives on Tuesday, marking the start of the spring season for the Northern Hemisphere.

But what does that actually mean? Here’s what to know about how we split up the year using the Earth’s orbit.

What is the equinox?

As the Earth travels around the sun, it does so at an angle.

For most of the year, the Earth’s axis is tilted either toward or away from the sun. That means the sun’s warmth and light fall unequally on the northern and southern halves of the planet.

During the equinox, the Earth’s axis and its orbit line up so that both hemispheres get an equal amount of sunlight.

The word equinox comes from two Latin words meaning equal and night. That’s because on the equinox, day and night last almost the same amount of time—though one may get a few extra minutes, depending on where you are on the planet.

The Northern Hemisphere’s spring—or vernal—equinox can land between March 19 and 21, depending on the year. Its fall—or autumnal—equinox can land between Sept. 21 and 24.

What is the solstice?

The solstices mark the times during the year when the Earth is at its most extreme tilt toward or away from the sun. This means the hemispheres are getting very different amounts of sunlight—and days and nights are at their most unequal.

During the Northern Hemisphere’s summer solstice, the upper half of the earth is tilted in toward the sun, creating the longest day and shortest night of the year. This solstice falls between June 20 and 22.

Meanwhile, at the winter solstice, the Northern Hemisphere is leaning away from the sun—leading to the shortest day and longest night of the year. The winter solstice falls between December 20 and 23.

What’s the difference between meteorological and astronomical seasons?

These are just two different ways to carve up the year.

Meteorological seasons are defined by the weather. They break down the year into three-month seasons based on annual temperature cycles. By that calendar, spring starts on March 1, summer on June 1, fall on Sept. 1 and winter on Dec. 1.

Astronomical seasons depend on how the Earth moves around the sun.

Equinoxes mark the start of spring and autumn. Solstices kick off summer and winter.

This, of course, came as a huge shock, and William and I have been doing everything we can to process and manage this privately for the sake of our young family. As you can imagine, this has taken time. It has taken me time to recover from major surgery in order to start my treatment. But most importantly, it has taken us time to explain everything to George, Charlotte and Louis in a way that’s appropriate for them and to reassure them that I’m going to be OK. As I’ve said to them, I am well. And getting stronger every day, by focusing on the things that will help me heal, in my mind, body and spirits. Having William by my side is a great source of comfort and reassurance, too, as is the love, support and kindness that has been shown by so many of you. It means so much to us both. We hope that you’ll understand that as a family, we now need some time, space and privacy while I complete my treatment. My work has always brought me a deep sense of joy, and I look forward to being back when I’m able. But for now, I must focus on making a full recovery. Here’s the latest on the Princess of Wales’s cancer news.

Catherine, Princess of Wales, has been diagnosed with cancer and has begun chemotherapy, she announced in a video message on Friday, in which she described the past two months as “incredibly tough for our entire family.”

Her diagnosis follows that of King Charles III , who announced his own cancer diagnosis and treatment in early February. It comes after a period of intense uncertainty about the health of Catherine, who underwent abdominal surgery in January and largely disappeared from public view as she tried to recuperate.

Like the king, Catherine, 42, did not specify what kind of cancer she had but asked the public and news media to respect her desire for privacy.

“We hope that you will understand that, as a family, we now need some time, space and privacy while I complete my treatment,” said Catherine, who is the wife of Prince William and a future queen.

“This of course came as a huge shock,” Catherine said, “and William and I have been doing everything we can to process and manage this privately for the sake of our young family. As you can imagine, this has taken time.”

Catherine’s announcement is a grim coda to a period of increasingly wild rumors about her health and well-being. But it plunges the British royal family into a period of even deeper uncertainty, with both the 75-year-old monarch and his daughter-in-law, the wife of his eldest son and heir and the mother of Prince George, the second in line to throne, facing grave health problems.

In her statement, Catherine said that at the time her surgery was performed, doctors believed that her condition was noncancerous. The surgery was successful, she said, but in further tests, the doctor found evidence of cancer. They recommended a course of chemotherapy, which she said she had recently begun.

“It has taken me time to recover from major surgery in order to start my treatment,” Catherine said in the video. “But, most importantly, it has taken us time to explain everything to George, Charlotte and Louis in a way that is appropriate for them, and to reassure them that I am going to be OK.”

Catherine’s announcement eerily echoed that of Charles’s. Buckingham Palace said that the king’s cancer was detected after a procedure for an enlarged prostate. While the palace has said he does not have prostate cancer, it has not specified what kind of cancer it is, nor his prognosis.

Until Catherine’s video on Friday, Kensington Palace, where William and Catherine have their offices, had released even fewer details about her condition, an information vacuum that led to a raft of rumors and conspiracy theories on social media .

In the video, which Kensington Palace said was recorded by BBC Studios in Windsor on Wednesday, Catherine is sitting on a bench outside, with daffodils and trees in blossom behind her.

Her hands clasped on her lap, she begins by thanking the public for their messages of support and understanding while she was recovering from surgery, before announcing her diagnosis.

“In January, I underwent major abdominal surgery in London, and, at the time, it was thought that my condition was noncancerous. The surgery was successful,” she said. “However, tests after the operation found cancer had been present. My medical team therefore advised that I should undergo a course of preventative chemotherapy, and I am now in the early stages of that treatment.”

Catherine’s statement emphasized the importance of her three children and their well-being as a key factor in the timing of the announcement. “As I have said to them,” she said, “I am well and getting stronger every day by focusing on the things that will help me heal; in my mind, body and spirits. Having William by my side is a great source of comfort and reassurance, too.”

The children’s school has now closed for the Easter holidays. A Kensington Palace official said Catherine and William had wanted to share the information when they felt it was right for them as a family.

Catherine ended her video statement with a message for other people affected by a cancer diagnosis. “At this time, I am also thinking of all those whose lives have been affected by cancer,” she said. “For everyone facing this disease, in whatever form, please do not lose faith or hope. You are not alone.”

Doctors recognize familiar pattern in the princess’s statement.

Although it is not known what type of cancer Princess Catherine has, oncologists say that what she described in her public statement that was released on Friday — discovering a cancer during another procedure, in this case a “major abdominal surgery” — is all too common.

“Unfortunately, so much of the cancer we diagnose is unexpected,” said Dr. Elena Ratner, a gynecologic oncologist at Yale Cancer Center who has diagnosed many patients with ovarian cancer, uterine cancer and cancers of the lining of the uterus.

Without speculating on Catherine’s procedure, Dr. Ratner described situations in which women will go in for surgery for endometriosis, a condition in which tissue similar to the lining of the uterus is found elsewhere in the abdomen. Often, Dr. Ratner says, the assumption is that the endometriosis has appeared on an ovary and caused a benign ovarian cyst. But one to two weeks later, when the supposedly benign tissue has been studied, pathologists report that they found cancer.

In the statement, Princess Catherine said she was is getting “a course of preventive chemotherapy.”

That, too, is common. In medical settings, it is usually called adjuvant chemotherapy.

Dr. Eric Winer, director of the Yale Cancer Center, said that with adjuvant chemotherapy, “the hope is that this will prevent further problems” and avoid a recurrence of the cancer.

It also means that “you removed everything” that was visible with surgery, said Dr. Michael Birrer, director of the Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. “You can’t see the cancer,” he added, because microscopic cancer cells may be left behind. The chemotherapy is a way to attack microscopic disease, he explained.

Other parts of Catherine’s statement also hit home for Dr. Ratner, particularly her concern for her family.

“William and I have been doing everything we can to process and manage this privately for the sake of our young family,” Catherine said, and “It has taken us time to explain everything to George, Charlotte, and Louis in a way that is appropriate for them, and to reassure them that I am going to be OK.”

Those are sentiments that Dr. Ratner hears on a regular basis and reveal, she says, “how hard it is for women to be diagnosed with cancer.”

“I see this day in and day out,” she said. “Women always say, ‘Will I be there for my kids? What will happen with my kids?’

“They don’t say, ‘What will happen to me?’”

Another heavy blow for the British royal family.

For the royal family, the news of a cancer diagnosis for Catherine, Princess of Wales, was another heavy blow, sidelining one of its most visible figures at a time when its ranks were already depleted.

In addition to King Charles III, who has canceled public appearances to undergo his own cancer treatment, the family has been adjusting to the loss of Queen Elizabeth II, who died in 2022; the departure of Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan; and the exile of Prince Andrew, disgraced by his association with the convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

Harry and Meghan issued a statement saying they wished “health and healing for Kate and the family, and hope they are able to do so privately and in peace.”

Since Harry and Meghan, who are known as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, withdrew from royal duties in 2020 and left Britain for Southern California, Harry has been estranged from his father, Charles, and his brother, Prince William. He visited his father briefly after Buckingham Palace announced the king’s cancer diagnosis in February.

The palace said on Friday that Charles was “so proud of Catherine for her courage in speaking as she did.” Noting that the king had visited her when they were both being treated in a London hospital, the palace said Charles “has remained in the closest contact with his beloved daughter-in-law throughout the past weeks.”

Buckingham Palace said only last month that King Charles has cancer.

King Charles III was diagnosed with cancer in early February and suspended his public engagements to undergo treatment, casting a shadow over a busy reign that began around 18 months ago after the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II.

The announcement, made by Buckingham Palace, came after the 75-year-old sovereign was discharged from a London hospital, following a procedure to treat an enlarged prostate.

The palace did not disclose what form of cancer Charles has, but a palace official said it was not prostate cancer. Doctors detected the cancer during that procedure, and the king began treatment on Monday.

News of Charles’ diagnosis ever since has reverberated through Britain, which, after seven decades of Elizabeth’s reign, has begun to get comfortable with her son. Charles waited longer to ascend the throne than anyone in the history of the British monarchy, and he was a familiar figure, with a personal life relentlessly dissected by the British media by the time he became the sovereign.

At Myers of Keswick, a shop on Hudson Street that sells British goods like Hobnobs biscuits, Wilkin & Sons marmalade and steak and ale pie, Jennifer Myers-Pulidore, the owner, said she had watched the announcement live while fielding alarmed texts from her father, Peter Myers. He opened the store 39 years ago and is now retired and living back in Keswick, England.

“I feel for her,” said Ms. Myers-Pulidore, 45, who was born in New York and grew up spending summers in Keswick. With three children of her own, she said she could relate to the princess’s desire to address the matter with her family before discussing it publicly.

She said she had not kept up with the recent wave of speculation online about why Catherine had not been seen much in public since undergoing abdominal surgery earlier this year. Ms. Myers-Pulidore had nothing good to say about those who had spread wild rumors.

“It’s awful. It’s sort of pathetic that she couldn’t even have time in private,” she said. “It almost makes me think she had no other option but to come clean.”

For Ms. Myers-Pulidore, the news stirred painful memories of Princess Diana, a previous Princess of Wales to whom the store owner considers Catherine a spiritual heir.

“She, in England, is loved,” Ms. Myers-Pulidore said of Catherine. “People think of her as the people’s princess.”

After Diana’s death; the death of Queen Elizabeth II; King Charles’s cancer diagnosis; and estrangement between William, Prince of Wales, and his brother, Prince Harry, the Duke of Sussex, Ms. Myers-Pulidore said she worried about the British royal family’s future.

“I hope they will make it,” she said.

Outside the shop, Richard Barnett winced while discussing the news.

“It’s all very sad,” said Mr. Barnett, a London native who has lived in New York for 35 years. He added that he hoped Catherine’s treatment would be successful and that her recovery would be swift and comfortable.

“Wish her the best,” he said. “And peace and quiet.”

Asked whether he had followed the recent gossip and speculation about Catherine that Ms. Myers-Pulidore had condemned, Mr. Barnett nodded.

“It’s good she stopped the rumors,” he said.

Outside Tea & Sympathy, a British restaurant a few blocks away on Greenwich Avenue, Dave Heenan shook his head when asked about the news.

“It’s awful. I’m devastated — the whole royal family, they’re cursed!” said Mr. Heenan, 81, who moved to New York from Newcastle, England, in 1963. He said that, like other British people, he had come to love Catherine and was excited about her future.

“She’s the one member of the royal family who could really carry that crown,” he said.

One positive thing he could say was that he had been able to share his feelings with fellow English men and women: “It brings English people together.”

Iain Anderson, Tea & Sympathy’s manager, said he had become concerned about Catherine recently as she stayed out of the public eye and rumors about her flew. He said that to him, the announcement on Friday felt forced.

“Maybe they had to say something because of the public pressure,” Mr. Anderson, who is originally from Gloucestershire, England, said. “If they had to open up about this and they didn’t want to, that’s unfortunate.”

Like Ms. Myers-Pulidore, he said he had a grim feeling of déjà vu.

“We’ve had all this before with Lady Diana,” he said

Michael West, a Briton living in Manhattan, said he was reminded of Queen Elizabeth II’s death two years ago as well as King Charles’s cancer diagnosis.

“It just seems as though trouble comes in threes,” he said as he passed the British Consulate on Second Avenue. “And it just seems as though, for that family at the moment, that perhaps trouble comes in tens.”

Mr. West is originally from a village called Higham, famous as the place where Charles Dickens died. He said that although Catherine had not been born into royalty, she had fit well into her role as a Windsor.

“Among my family and friends, people were happy with them,” he said of the family, adding, “They do their job with grace.”

The reaction of Londoners is full of concern.

As news filtered out about the princess of Wales’s cancer diagnosis in London on Friday, just as the sun was setting on a mild spring evening, many expressed their shock and concern for a well-liked member of the British royal family, who is destined to one day be queen.

Kensington Palace had urged the public to respect the privacy of Catherine as she recovered from a major abdominal surgery in January, but as the days drew into weeks, the rumor mill swirled — with conspiracy theories growing deeper and wilder — about what had been keeping such a prominent member of the royal family out of view.

On Friday evening, many lamented the scrutiny she had faced and what the family had been forced to endure at such a terrible time.

“She is still just a human,” said Aaron Viera, 33, and a lifelong Lononder. “It’s just really sad that she has to go through this.”

Alongside co-workers sharing a drink outside the Goat Tavern, just steps from Kensington Palace where Catherine and her family had lived, Mr. Viera denounced the social media speculation.

Much of that frenzy has been driven by an American “obsession” with the royals, interjected another friend, Maryann, 35, who declined to give her last name. At the end of the day, she’s a mother of three, another woman, Jessi, pointed out, and she worried about toll chemotherapy would take on Catherine. So many in the country know the struggles of cancer personally, and they agreed that Catherine’s candor about her illness unfortunately would be easy for many to relate to.

Catherine, 42, the wife of William, Prince of Wales, is the second member of the British royal family to be diagnosed with cancer in recent weeks after Buckingham Palace announced in February that her father-in-law, King Charles III , also was being treated for cancer.

On Friday evening, the overwhelming sentiment seemed to be of concern for the well-being of the princess of Wales.

“God, she’s had cancer, has she?” one woman said to her friend, engrossed in a news article on her phone while getting off a bus in the northwest of the city. “Terrible, she’s only 40-something, isn’t she?”

I wanted to take this opportunity to say thank you, personally, for all the wonderful messages of support and for your understanding whilst I have been recovering from surgery. In January, I underwent major abdominal surgery in London and at the time, it was thought that my condition was noncancerous. The surgery was successful. However, tests after the operation found cancer had been present. Kate undergoes surgery.

A little more than three weeks after Kate made a public appearance on Christmas Day, Kensington Palace announced that she had been admitted to the London Clinic to have abdominal surgery . Officials gave few details about her health but said the surgery was successful, and that her condition was “not cancerous.”

Hours later, Buckingham Palace announced that King Charles III would be treated for an enlarged prostate.

Jan. 29, 2024

Kate is released from the hospital.

Almost two weeks later, Kate returned home to Windsor, just outside London . Kensington Palace officials said that she would convalesce at home for two to three months and would not resume her public duties until after Easter, at the end of March.

Feb. 5, 2024

King Charles is diagnosed with cancer.

Buckingham Palace officials announced in early February, just days after Charles had undergone treatment for an enlarged prostate, that the king had been diagnosed with cancer .

The palace did not share what form of cancer Charles has, but a palace official said it was not prostate cancer. Doctors had discovered the cancer during the earlier procedure.

March 4, 2024

Kate is spotted for the first time in months.

The public’s appetite for information about Kate’s whereabouts and recovery reached a fever pitch in the first week of March. And around that time, TMZ published a grainy paparazzi shot of Kate riding in a car driven by her mother.

Despite the photograph circulating on the internet, British newspapers and broadcasters did not republish it, citing Kate’s request for privacy during her convalescence — though they did report on the sighting.

March 10, 2024

Kate and children appear in Mother’s Day photograph.

To mark Mother’s Day in Britain, Kensington Palace released an official photograph of a smiling Kate surrounded by her three children, George, Charlotte and Louis. The palace did not give many details about the picture except that it was taken by William last week in Windsor, where the family lives in Adelaide Cottage, on the grounds of Windsor Castle.

While the picture was meant to highlight a happy family on the holiday and quell rumors, it became a subject of intense scrutiny after The Associated Press, and several other photo agencies, issued a “kill order,” asking its clients to remove it from all platforms over concerns that it had been manipulated. The New York Times, which had initially used the picture in a story, also removed it.

March 11, 2024

Kate apologizes for the altered photo.

On Monday, Kate took the blame and apologized for the Mother’s Day photo.

“Like many amateur photographers, I do occasionally experiment with editing,” she said on social media. “I wanted to express my apologies for any confusion the family photograph we shared yesterday caused.”

Kate is known as a photography enthusiast, and the palace often distributes her photos of the family. Palace officials stressed that Kate made minor adjustments for what was intended to be an informal family picture that was taken by William.

March 18, 2024

Another royal photo is flagged.

Getty Images placed an editorial advisory on a second royal family photo, this time an image of Queen Elizabeth II, flanked by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The photo — taken by Kate at Balmoral Castle in Scotland in August 2022 and released in 2023 on what would have been the queen’s 97th birthday — had been “digitally enhanced” before it was released by the palace, the photo agency said.

Catherine, the Princess of Wales, apologized last week for doctoring a photo of her with her three children, which was recalled by several news agencies after they determined the image had been manipulated .

The decision to recall the photo reignited a storm of speculation about Catherine, who had not been seen in public since Christmas Day and had abdominal surgery in January. In her statement, the 42-year-old princess chalked up the alteration to a photographer’s innocent desire to retouch the image.

“Like many amateur photographers, I do occasionally experiment with editing,” Catherine wrote in a post on social media. “I wanted to express my apologies for any confusion the family photograph we shared yesterday caused.”

The photo, which marked Mother’s Day in Britain, depicted a smiling Catherine surrounded by her children, George, Charlotte and Louis.

Kensington Palace said that William had taken the photo last week in Windsor, where the family lives in Adelaide Cottage, on the grounds of Windsor Castle. But Catherine is known as a keen photographer, and the palace often distributes her photos of the family.

Hours after Kensington Palace released the photo, The Associated Press, Reuters and Agence France-Presse issued advisories urging news organizations to remove the image.

The A.P. said that after a post-publication inspection of the photograph, its editors determined that the image “shows an inconsistency in the alignment of Princess Charlotte’s left hand.” The source of the photo, it said “had manipulated the image in a way that does not meet A.P.’s photo standards.”

The details of the photo show a range of visual inconsistencies suggesting it was doctored. In several areas of the image, details like a sleeve or a zipper don’t line up, or have artificial patterns.

A palace official said Catherine made minor adjustments in what was meant to be an informal picture of the family together for Mother’s Day. The official reiterated that William had taken the photo, though Catherine edited it.

Samora Bennett-Gager, an expert in photo retouching, identified several other questionable elements, including the edges of her daughter Charlotte’s legs, which he said were unnaturally soft, suggesting the background had been manipulated. Catherine’s hand on the waist of her son, Louis, is blurry, which he said could indicate the image was taken from a separate frame of the shoot.

The photograph appeared on newspaper front pages and websites around the world, including the website of The New York Times. The Times removed the photo from an article about it on Sunday evening.

Angel Reese is 'angry' after LSU's win over Rice in March Madness. Why 'it's good' for LSU

LSU women's basketball 's star forward, known for stacking up double-doubles with regularity and ease, found her path to a 13th straight performance with double-digit points and rebounds anything but against unassuming No. 14-seed Rice in the NCAA Tournament first round Friday afternoon inside the Pete Maravich Assembly Center.

It was an off night for not only Reese, but the Tigers, who amassed a season-high 24 turnovers.

The Owls did something only a handful of teams have accomplished against LSU this season, outscoring Kim Mulkey's team in the paint 24-20.

Despite that, the Tigers (29-5) outlasted the Owls 70-60 to advance to the second round of March Madness where No. 3 LSU will meet No. 11 Middle Tennessee, which knocked off No. 6 Louisville 71-69 in the first game Friday.

"I'm angry, of course," Reese said in the locker room after LSU's win. "I'm going to be worked up tomorrow (at practice). I'm going to go watch film tonight and rest up. Being able to understand the mistakes I made, I'm not going to have a pretty night every night. I've matured enough to know that I can still rebound. I got a lot of rebounds tonight, I got steals tonight, I blocked some shots.

"You don't let the game get to you as a senior. I've done a good job with that. But of course my team is going to need more than 10 points from me."

Reese and teammate Aneesah Morrow, a duo Reese called "unstoppable," had to find different ways to be efficient and affect the game as Reese contended with plenty of double teams from Rice's Malia Fisher, Sussy Ngulefac and Fatou Samb.

Morrow stepped up and relied on the outside shot, going 6-for-11 and scoring a game-high 15 points. Reese went 1-for-7 shooting from the floor but was able to get to the free-throw line in the second half, knocking down 8 of 12 attempts to finish with 10 points.

For Reese, she leaned in on cleaning up the glass. And she was unstoppable. She had 16 rebounds by the 3:30 mark in the third quarter and ended with 19 for the game. Rice had just four offensive rebounds, 29 total and only managed 11 second-chance points.

"Angel got 19 rebounds. She didn't shut it down," Mulkey said. "She got seven shot attempts. So it's not the Angel Reese show with us. We've got other people that can score. She's an All-American. Everybody's entitled to a bad game. She's entitled to one, and her teammates picked it up for her.

"The only time a coach or the only time I would get upset with somebody that has a bad night is if you just quit on us, you don't give us something. She had almost 20 rebounds. So she was trying."

Meandering through the off night, Reese also propped herself up by being one the team's leaders, something that freshman Mikaylah Williams, playing in her first NCAA Tournament game, and LSU's other younger players needed.

"She was kind of telling me what to do, where to go, just keep shooting," Williams said. "And she rebounded very well tonight. Even though she had an off night, she was still a great leader."

Reese helped LSU win its seventh straight NCAA Tournament game by supporting her teammates through an ugly game.

But make no mistake, Reese isn't happy. And practice Saturday, as she and Morrow said, is going to be intense.

Kate, Princess of Wales, announces cancer diagnosis, says she is undergoing preventative chemotherapy

London  — Catherine, the Princess of Wales, announced in a video message released Friday that cancer was discovered following her January abdominal surgery and she is undergoing preventative chemotherapy on the advice of her medical team. The announcement came after months of widespread speculation about the 42-year-old princess' health and controversy over doctored images released by Kensington Palace.

Kate said that the cancer was discovered during tests conducted after her surgery , which had gone well. She did not say what kind of cancer it was or share additional details about her diagnosis. 

"This of course came as a huge shock, and William and I have been doing everything we can to process and manage this privately for the sake of our young family," Kate said in the video message. "As you can imagine, this has taken time. It has taken me time to recover from major surgery in order to start my treatment. But, most importantly, it has taken us time to explain everything to George, Charlotte and Louis in a way that is appropriate for them, and to reassure them that I am going to be OK."

Kensington Palace said her video message was filmed by BBC Studios in Windsor on Wednesday. In it, Kate said she was in the "early stages" of her chemotherapy treatment.

"I am well and getting stronger every day by focusing on the things that will help me heal; in my mind, body and spirits," Kate said in the video. "Having William by my side is a great source of comfort and reassurance too. As is the love, support and kindness that has been shown by so many of you. It means so much to us both."

She said that she would continue to take the time and space she needs to undergo treatment and recover, and asked the public for understanding.

"My work has always brought me a deep sense of joy and I look forward to being back when I am able, but for now I must focus on making a full recovery. At this time, I am also thinking of all those whose lives have been affected by cancer. For everyone facing this disease, in whatever form, please do not lose faith or hope. You are not alone."

Messages of support for Kate poured in from across the U.K. and around the world. 

King Charles said he is "so proud of Catherine for her courage in speaking as she did," according to a statement released by Buckingham Palace. He said he had remained in the "closest contact with his beloved daughter-in-law throughout the past weeks."

"We wish health and healing for Kate and the family, and hope they are able to do so privately and in peace," Prince Harry and Meghan said in a statement provided to news agencies.

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said in a statement that Kate "has shown tremendous bravery," adding, "In recent weeks she has been subjected to intense scrutiny and has been unfairly treated by certain sections of the media around the world and on social media."

What do we know about Kate's cancer diagnosis?

Kate did not specify what type of cancer she was diagnosed with. A Kensington Palace spokesman said, "The princess is now on a recovery pathway having commenced a course of preventative chemotherapy in late February."

CBS News chief medical correspondent Dr. Jon LaPook said it sounded like Kate's medical team had found her cancer early .

"You always want to find cancer in the earliest stages," LaPook said. "They went in there to do whatever procedure they were going to do, and they knew it was going to be some prolonged recovery, and in there, presumably when they were able to take a good look, they didn't see any evidence of cancer. And it was only afterwards, when I guess there maybe was an examination of a specimen, a surgical specimen, that they said, 'Oh, there's some cancer here.' Since you always want to find cancer in the earliest stages, whatever kind of cancer it is, to me that was a relatively good piece of news."

LaPook said "preventative" chemotherapy means treatment "preventing growth of microscopic cancer cells."

Dr. Shivan Sivakumar, associate professor in oncology at the University of Birmingham,  told The Associated Press  it sounds like she's referring to what's known as "adjuvant" chemotherapy in the medical profession.

"This is chemotherapy after an operation to prevent recurrence," he said. "This is to attempt to destroy any circulating cancer cells."

Months of speculation about health, photos

Kate's announcement came after growing public speculation over her health that until now had been met with silence from the palace.

In January, Kensington Palace announced she underwent planned abdominal surgery and would be taking time to recover in private at least until Easter, on March 31. It said there would be no updates on her health as she recuperated, and said the surgery was not cancer-related.

Then on Britain's Mother's Day in March, Kate and her husband, the Prince of Wales, released an image of Kate and her three children that had clearly been doctored, fueling ongoing speculation about her health. Several leading global photo agencies recalled the image.

Kate admitted in a social media post to editing the image , but Kensington Palace refused to release an original, unedited version . Another photo that had been released of the late Queen Elizabeth with her grandchildren also appeared to have been altered .

British tabloids reported Sunday that Kate was spotted in public , publishing a grainy video appearing to show her and William at a farm shop near her family's home in Windsor. The tabloid quoted onlookers as saying she appeared "happy, relaxed and healthy."

In February, Kate's father-in-law, King Charles, announced that he would be undergoing treatment for an unspecified form of cancer which was discovered as he was being treated for an enlarged prostate. Charles and his wife, Queen Camilla, have issued updates about his well-being, thanking the public for their support.

The Princess of Wales, formerly known as Kate Middleton, married Prince William, now the heir to the throne , in a lavish ceremony at Westminster Abbey in London on April 29, 2011. They have three children: Prince George, 10; Princess Charlotte, 8; and Prince Louis, 5.

They thought she was okay, after having her first operation in January, but then the post-operative tests confirmed the worst of news at the end of February.

Like any patient, like any couple, it's been hard for both Kate and William to get their heads around it all.

And then their biggest priority was to make sure Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis also had time to take in the fact that their mummy is now undergoing chemotherapy.

The princess's chemotherapy began in late February, although it is unclear when it will end.

Kensington Palace said it would not be sharing the type of cancer, adding: "The princess has a right to medical privacy, as we all do."

It is also unclear when the princess will return to official duties - the palace said she would do this "when she is cleared to do so by her medical team".

Prince William, meanwhile, will "continue to balance supporting his wife and family and maintaining his official duties, as he has done since the start of the year", the palace said.

The future queen's long absence had sparked global social media speculation and conspiracy theories, and a Mother's Day photo released of her and her three children did little to quell the frenzy after it was revealed to have been edited.

Earlier this week, The Sun published a video of the couple on a visit to a farm shop in Windsor, with an onlooker describing the princess as "super happy" and "relaxed".

Confirmation of Kate's illness comes less than two months after King Charles, 75, announced he had been diagnosed with cancer .

His cancer came after hospital treatment for an enlarged prostate, although it is not known what type of cancer he has or what stage it is at.

Kate Middleton came across as somewhat thin to some who saw our new video of her from this past weekend -- but she's got one fitness guru in her corner ... one Jillian Michaels .

One of the first takeaways many had upon viewing the clip of Kate and Prince William at the Windsor Farm Shop -- about a mile from her home -- was that she looked sorta skinny ... or rather, skinnier than usual. KM is already a slender woman ... but here, perhaps more so.

To that, Jillian tells TMZ ... Kate looks just fine in her eyes -- both in terms of weight and overall health ... especially when you consider she went under the knife only 2 months ago.

In JM's eyes, Kate is right where she oughta be for a woman of her general size -- even noting to us that someone who's usually a bit thinner might lose some pounds while recovering after a procedure like the one she underwent ... and to Jillian, Kate looks normal.

On the subject of speculating on Kate -- be it her health, her weight or anything else -- Jillian tells us folks need to piss off and leave her alone ... 'cause it's not their business.

She reminds us someone's health journey is very personal -- and considering the type of microscope Kate's been under lately ... Jillian says everyone needs perspective.

Sage advice from Jillian -- but something tells us the public will continue picking apart every little detail. Remember, prior to the video TMZ published Monday ... we hadn't seen her on her own two feet since December, which is quite a long time.

Of course, she underwent abdominal surgery -- for a condition that hasn't been made public -- and Kensington Palace said she wouldn't be resuming her duties until at least after Easter.

What made everyone even more suspicious of her whereabouts and well-being had a lot to do with a photo she released on Mother's Day last week ... which was proven to be doctored .

Time will tell if this latest sighting tamps down all fervor and speculation surrounding her life and condition. Jillian's certainly hoping it does -- 'cause she seems pretty sick of the noise.

WWE superstar Bayley gets a personalized Bucks jersey, has a blast on court with Bango at game ahead of 'SmackDown' tonight in Milwaukee

Giannis Antetokounmpo, Damian Lillard and the Milwaukee Bucks were flexing Thursday night in their win over the Brooklyn Nets at Fiserv Forum.

They might have just been getting ready for WWE's "SmackDown," which takes place live Friday in the same building.

And to promote "SmackDown," one of WWE's biggest stars — Bayley — was all over the arena Thursday and might have just become Bango's new best friend.

Watch out, Damage CTRL (the group that recently turned on Bayley), the 2024 winner of the women's Royal Rumble has another ally in her corner.

After she was introduced to the crowd early in the second quarter, Bango then joined Bayley, who will challenge for the WWE women's championship at Wrestlemania in two weeks, on court.

The 34-year-old wrestler from San Jose, California, did her best ring announcer impression.

"Introducing from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the undisputed No. 1 mascot in the NBA, Bango!" she shouted to the crowd.

Bango then ripped off his shirt, before the two led the "Flex Cam."

Bayley assisted Bango in a dunking bit during a stop in the action later on. She also sprayed shirts into the stands with two enormous, spinning T-shirt cannons and played a Plinko game with a fan for on-court entertainment.

Before the game, Bayley, WWE's first women's Grand Slam champion, was outside Section 120, the Kohl's Court area, which was transformed into a wrestling fan's dream for the night. Replica title belts and other memorabilia were on display.

And earlier in the day, she was given a customized Bucks jersey with her nickname — The Role Model — on the back.

The Bucks were mostly in control of Thursday's game but Bayley was ready to jump into action if needed.

“Put me in coach,” she wrote in an Instagram post that featured images from her night at the game.

Roman Reigns and Cody Rhodes will meet face-to-face on 'SmackDown'

Milwaukee is getting one of the final shows before Wrestlemania, WWE's marquee event, April 6-7.

And Friday's "SmackDown" will feature the company's two most prominent superstars in Undisputed WWE Universal champion Roman Reigns and Cody Rhodes.

The two will meet face-to-face just over two weeks before they'll square off for a second straight year in the main event of Night 2 of Wrestlemania for the championship.

Reigns, 38, holds the record for longest reign — he's carried the title since Aug. 20, 2020. Meanwhile, Rhodes, 38, who's the son of WWE Hall of Famer Dusty Rhodes, is looking to "finish his story" and avenge last year's loss.

Others expected to be in attendance are WWE Hall of Famer Rey Mysterio, Kevin Owens, LA Knight, Bianca Belair and more.

And, of course, Bayley.

Will The Rock be at 'SmackDown' tonight?

Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, who's part of a major storyline heading into Wrestlemania, is not advertised for Friday night's "SmackDown" in Milwaukee.

Johnson had appeared on "SmackDown" the last three weeks as well as Monday on "Raw."

Johnson, 51, will return to the ring for the main event on Night 1 of Wrestlemania Saturday, April 6, at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia. He's teaming with Reigns, who's his cousin, to face Rhodes and World Heavyweight champion Seth Rollins in a must-see tag team match that carries stipulations for the Reigns-Rhodes match the next night.

Johnson, who got his start in professional wrestling in the 1990s before he became a movie star, was appointed to the board of directors of the TKO Group, which oversees UFC and WWE, earlier this year.

What time does 'SmackDown' start in Milwaukee?

"SmackDown," one of WWE's signature weekly shows, will take place on Friday, March 22, at Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee.

The two-hour show begins at 7 p.m. Doors open at 5:15 p.m. with the action beginning with a non-televised "dark match" at 6:45 p.m.

"I am so excited to be in this building tomorrow night," Bayley told the Bucks crowd at Fiserv Forum on Thursday. "Sold out, might I add. Thank you, Milwaukee."
