Centuries prior to the French Revolution, the " World Formula " theory was proposed by Paracelsus which posited that the world was governed by mathematical formulas whose variables could be identified and altered. He aspired to change these variables in an attempt to erase suffering and bring happiness to humanity, which resulted in the event known as " Babel ." Innumerable calamities rocked the world to its core, causing massive amounts of death, and once it subsided new entities came into being in the world, primely the Vampire species . Deemed abominations before God, normal humans attempted to wipe out these new beings, and a race war ensued. This attempted genocide failed and Vampires began to hide their existences which came to be believed as no more than myth and legend, despite dwelling only one step beyond the human world.
Noé Archiviste , a young vampire living in late 19th century France, is sent by his Teacher to Paris to find the Book of Vanitas and discover its true nature. Supposedly, the Book of Vanitas is a cursed grimoire created by the Vampire of the Blue Moon from which the incurable disease Malnomen originates. Noé successfully discovers the Book on his way to Paris, as well as the person possessing it—a human calling himself Vanitas who uses the grimoire to cure Malnomen. Vanitas declares his goal to be the salvation of the entire race of Vampires, and Noé accompanies him for his entire journey, wishing to understand the true nature of not only the Book but also the enigmatic owner who wields it.
The story consists of Noé's memoirs on how he would come to eventually kill Vanitas with his own hands.
Terminology [ ]
Vampires [ ].
Though referred to as "vampires," the Vampire race within The Case Study of Vanitas are distinct from mythical vampires, and were in fact named after them for having certain similarities. The main distinguishing feature between Vampires and humans is the ability of Vampires to see and interact with the World Formula , allowing them certain superhuman abilities. Unlike mythical vampires, Vampires within The Case Study of Vanitas do not have to drink blood or harm others to survive, and the vast majority go their entire lives without harming humans. While most (but not all) Vampires do enjoy the taste of blood, it is not a biological need, and is compared to alcohol, smoking, or sex. Compulsive blood drinking only occurs in the case of blood addiction or Malnomen .
Most Vampires are born under the Crimson Moon, and have a natural fear of the Blue Moon. Those who are born under the Blue Moon, as in the case of Vanitas of the Blue Moon , are scorned and ostracized by other Vampirekind.
The Book of Vanitas [ ]
A cursed grimoire supposedly passed on to Vanitas by Vanitas of the Blue Moon themself. It is the originator of the disease Malnomen, created in revenge against Vampires for their prosecution of those born under the Blue Moon. The human Vanitas now has the Book of Vanitas within his possession and is the only person capable of using it. However, contrary to the Book's original purpose, Vanitas uses it to cure cases of Malnomen and desires to save the Vampire race.
Malnomen [ ]
A disease created by Vanitas of the Blue Moon . It attacks the True Name of vampires, causing their bodies and souls to warp. Those infected with Malnomen, usually called curse bearers, gradually grow insane and begin to obsessively search for blood, escalating until they assault and even kill others without hesitation. In addition, their bodies will corrupt, though the onset of physical symptoms appear to happen rapidly in the final stages of the disease. Once warping of the body occurs, the curse bearer will continue to attack others until it dies. Until very recently, there was no possible way to cure those infected with Malnomen, and thus all curse bearers would be sentenced to execution by decapitation once their condition was discovered. The human Vanitas reverse engineers the different forms of Malnomen to find and restore the curse bearer's True Name, curing them.
The Case Study of Vanitas is written and illustrated by Jun Mochizuki and began serialization in Square Enix's monthly shōnen magazine Monthly Gangan Joker on December 2015. There are currently nine tankōbon volumes collecting serial chapters released in Japanese. The series is licensed in English by Yen Press and published simultaneously with its Japanese release.
The Case Study of Vanitas is an anime television series adaptation of the manga written and illustrated by Jun Mochizuki. On March 28, 2021, Aniplex announced at AnimeJapan an anime adaptation for the manga, animated by the studio BONES. It started broadcasting on July 2, 2021.
Stage Play [ ]
Stage "Vanitas no Carte" is a stage play adaptation of the manga written and illustrated by Jun Mochizuki. Announced by the official Twitter account on October 28, 2021. The show was initially scheduled from January 21st to January 30th, 2022 at the THEATRE1010 (シアター1010), in Tokyo, Japan. An encore was performed from March 10th to March 12th, 2023 at the Sunshine Theater (サンシャイン劇場), in Tokyo, Japan.

The Case Study of Vanitas’ Complex Shipping Situation
Episode 7 of The Case Study of Vanitas introduces a messy love square that cumulates in a surprisingly progressive dance party.
WARNING: The following contains spoilers for The Case Study of Vanitas , Episode 7, “Love,” now streaming on Funimation.
The creator of The Case Study of Vanitas Jun Mochizuki has been known for her penchant for portraying melodramatic relationships ever since Pandora Hearts , and this is also a major selling point of The Case Study of Vanitas . The entangled romance aspect of the story is on full display in Episode 7 of the anime, appropriately titled “Love”.
The Jeanne/Vanitas ship has been well underway ever since the non-consensual kiss in Episode 3 . It also helps that Jeanne fervently sucked Vanitas’ blood in Episode 4 when she was taken over by bloodlust, even leaving her mark on him. And Jeanne doesn’t even seem to hate Vanitas all that much.
RELATED: The Case Study of Vanitas and Anime’s History of Seductive Gothic Horror
But of course, this relationship is not as straightforward as one might think. At the end of this episode, Noe asks Vanitas what he loves about Jeanne, and while Vanitas mentions a lot of superficial things like her strength, her looks and how she is easy to tease, in the end, he says that he loves the fact that Jeanne would never love him back, as he won't love someone who also loves him. This hints at some self-loathing tendencies within Vanitas, as well as the way in which he displays his “hatred” toward vampires by curing them; aspects that are very likely related to his tormented past.
Vanitas’ feelings for Jeanne might not even be love. He claims that he doesn’t know what love is, but his heart quickens when he sees Jeanne and he interprets this as love. However, since Vanitas has no experience with romance, demonstrated by the very pubescent way he treats Jeanne, it's possible that he has misinterpreted his feelings.
Although Vanitas thinks Jeanne will never love him, this is not how the show portrays things. Jeanne constantly blushes when she sees Vanitas. She doesn’t dislike being around him and also agreed to suck only his blood from now on. Jeanne may also relate to Vanitas in terms of his self-loathing, as her reputation as a ruthless executioner makes her feel inferior. However, if she falls for Vanitas, then by his logic, he would stop loving her, so this seems like a doomed ship from the beginning.

To complicate things further, there is Noe, who is still quite innocent and knows very little about love. During their meeting where he is served his favorite dessert, tarte Tatin, he takes particular notice of Jeanne. When Jeanne drags Vanitas outside, fearing that he might expose her bloodthirsty secret, Noe feels lost and even abandons his dessert to go after them.
Noe then witnesses Jeanne willingly suck Vanitas’ blood and admits that he feels agony in his heart. While Noe attributes this feeling to also wanting to taste Vanitas’ blood in front of Domi, he may sense it’s something more, because he tries to invite Jeanne to a dance that night. However, he is interrupted by Domi, who clearly loves Noe and doesn’t want him to realize his true feelings. There might still be hope for Domi though, as Noe is used to sucking her blood and is still very obtuse about his feelings, so it might take a long time for him to realize anything.
If all these ships seem hopelessly heterosexual, don't despair, because the melodramatic love square cumulates in a very ingenious way as the foursome participate in a dance party that evening. Domi surprisingly invites Jeanne to dance in an attempt to stop Noe from falling further for Jeanne. While Noe and Vanitas watch, Noe also invites Vanitas to dance, as he thought he could teach Vanitas.

The dance scene is a wonderful moment that disrupts the heteronormativity in the series so far. The matter-of-fact way this moment is portrayed is refreshing. By not making a big deal out of this, the series is also making way (whether consciously or not) for more organic portrayals of same-sex interaction.
Hilariously, as the two same-sex pairs have their progressive dance party, Luca is the only one left on the sidelines, watching as the adults have fun and hoping that he can grow up soon enough to invite Jeanne, as he obviously has a massive crush on her.
It's worth noting that in the manga, it’s a bit more ambiguous who Noe is really jealous of, because it could be interpreted as either Vanitas or Jeanne. However, the anime’s editing makes it very clear that he has feelings for Jeanne, not Vanitas, and Dominique is the only one who notices this -- although this doesn’t mean that the Noe/Vanitas ship is going nowhere. The dance scene in this episode, plus Noe’s heartfelt confession from Episode 6 , solidifies their partnership as something that can potentially transcend distrust, perhaps even jealousy.

The Case Study of Vanitas Episode 24 – A Profoundly Momentous Finale
The Case Study of Vanitas episode 24 wraps up with quite an emotional and action-packed finale! If it’s one thing we’ve come to learn throughout the season, it’s that Vanitas is a difficult and complicated character to understand. At the same time though, he is also just as compelling. These last developments in the story have made him more human than ever, making this finale very momentous.
It’s not just Vanitas – the friendship he’s grown to have with Noé is also finally acknowledged and appreciated. All in all, the finale achieves in delivering a perfectly constructed episode and an even more powerful conclusion to the show. I personally think it was awesome, and it hit right in the feels .
Why Vanitas Couldn’t Kill Noé
“Why..? Why can’t I kill you?”
The past season has been an emotional roller coaster ride, right? This arc has particularly highlighted Noé and Vanitas’ friendship, which is why the cliffhanger last week was super frustrating! To summarize, freedom for Vanitas meant that he’d be alone in his anguish. He is always guarded and distant so he wouldn’t have friends “to lose.” The situation Mikhail had them in was really difficult. However, I think we can all agree at this point that Noé is not a stranger — they’ve already grown together as companions and friends. So as complicated and as simple as it is, that is why Vanitas couldn’t kill Noé.
Strength Within Dominique de Sade
“In the name of protection, let us take up our swords together.”
In the end, it wasn’t Noé who saved Dominique — it was the other way around, she saved them! Domi breaks free from her grayscale mental prison and creates a beautiful rain of ice attacks which stops Mikhail’s rampage over the carnival. It was badass, but the one I really love is how she survived her internal struggle. Louis, or at least the version of her as Louis, is the one that tells her — “Mikhail just used that book to hit you where are most fragile and vulnerable. He didn’t even put a scratch on our true name.”
She realizes that she’s stronger than she thinks and that she has to confront and accept her inner “selves”. It was a true moment of courage, one that shows Domi’s true character and strength. She deserves happiness, and with the company of good friends ( like Jeanne in the cafe), she can finally grieve and move forward. My heart is full for her.
The Mastermind Behind the Nightmare
Whenever a finale comes around, the absence of the opening theme really adds that excitement! The Case Study of Vanitas episode 24 did an absolutely amazing job in making those first minutes an emotional and epic one. From the aftermath of Vanitas and Noé’s fight, their silent breakdowns, Mikhail’s violent outburst, Domi’s ice creations, – and the most twisted and shocking of all – the reveal of the involvement of Noé’s teacher, the former Marquis de Sade.
“The World of Dreams has crumbled to ruins. Whether they be the sweet dreams that soothe us in the cradle or the nightmares that eat away at our hearts, dreams are still dreams in the end. There will always come a time when we must open our eyes and face reality. That is when we shall meet again, my darling kitten. “
The Shapeless One, just like his name, is super creepy and chilling. (Voiced by Akira Ishida). His sudden appearance here makes things shadier, even with Charlatan and Ruthven’s separate movements. There are so many questions, but the most off-putting thing here is the fact that his eyes — a unique pair of pink and blue — are similar to a certain cat we know of. The transition with that blue cat couldn’t be any more obvious. It might even be possible that a part of his plan was to have Noé seek out the Book of Vanitas in the first place.
Vanitas, the Blue Moon Vampire’s Kin
Personally, I think the rooftop scene is the best part of the episode. It is melancholic, but it makes me feel both happy and sad at the same time. You see, The Case Study of Vanitas episode 24 is titled, “ Apres la pluie – His Wish. ” At first, I thought it was in homage to Luna, the Vampire of the Blue Moon. Turns out it’s not — it’s also about Vanitas’ request of Noé. We already know most of Vanitas’ mysterious past from Mikhail and it’s true — the Book will rewrite them sooner or later. Noé actually mentioned this back in the first episode, and given the trust, understanding, and respect they’ve developed in these recent events — it makes it all the more bittersweet. When Noé started tearing up, I definitely felt that.
The Case Study of Vanitas episode 24 resolves a lot of things, including Luna’s fate and the full meaning behind Vanitas’ mission to cure vampires. He calls it vengeance, but it does come from a good place in his heart. That’s why it breaks me to see what has become of Mikhail, and I’m not gonna lie — the sudden change from his weeping to his emotionless face was so creepy. Oh the poor boy, at least he shows some kindness towards Domi in the end.
I love that the rooftop scene also has this calm and hopeful air in the end. Now, Vanitas can move on forward with a less heavy heart. The finale is reminiscent of episode 19 when Luna tells Vanitas “not to shut your heart away.” The fact that the hourglass earring is constantly focused on and that Vanitas in the ending theme doesn’t look back makes me all the more emotional.
A Great Finale for a Great Series
I absolutely loved this show, from start to finish. Even though the last arc has been a terrifying, heart-wrenching, and emotionally-damaging watching experience! The writing is wonderful — the way the stories and personalities unravel has a lot of depth in it. It is very moving, especially because I always love a good character development. It is very profound, and I couldn’t ask for a better finale.
The Case Study of Vanitas shines best with its steam-punk aesthetics, amazing lore, stunning visuals and animation, and my personal favorite, the beautiful soundtrack. Vanitas and Noé, including their voice actors, have been quite the interesting pair to watch on their adventures, which is also one of the best appeals of the show! Aside from the comedy, the touch of drama (and erotic energies) is what makes this show stand out from the others. I personally had a lot of fun watching it, and I guess we have Studio Bones to thank for this wonderful adaptation.
If you didn’t know, the anime has already caught up with the original material. This means that there is nothing to dive into right now or for quite a time soon. (Which honestly, makes me very sad.) Nevertheless, it has been a great ride and I am eagerly looking forward to what they have in store next. You can also check out Jun Mochizuki’s special illustration of her celebration of the last episode. See the tweet below:
