About PhD studies in Denmark

university of copenhagen phd accounting

Since 1993, the standard duration of PhD studies in Denmark has been three years. This requires you to have  graduated from a five year Masters programme in the same or a closely related discipline or that you have some other comparable qualifications.

Flexible process

There is also the option of starting on an integrated Master's and PhD process, the so-called flex process, which starts 12 months on in a Masters program (4+4 scheme), or immediately after graduating with a Bachelor's degree (3+5-scheme).

Read more about the flexible process

Requirements

You are required to take relevant courses or similar educational modules equivalent to six months of studies during the process and this predicates that during your studies, you attend active research environments, also away from the institution to which you are admitted, either by study tours to other, mainly foreign institutions, or in or some other way. Finally, students are required to gain experience in teaching or some other kind of knowledge outreach.

Special circumstances

PhD studies are normally full-time but in special circumstances, part-time studies may be possible on application with your reasons. In special cases, it may be possible for a thesis to be considered with a view to acquiring a doctorate without, or with abbreviated, preceding studies but this requires you to have gained professional commercial qualifications that are comparable to PhD studies.

Completion

A PhD is awarded in recognition of the fact that the person to whom it is awarded has completed PhD studies and has satisfactorily defended a doctoral thesis in a public viva, has demonstrated the ability to independently run a scientific project using scientific methods appropriate to the subject and has further helped promote research at a level corresponding to the international standard for doctorates within the discipline concerned.

The PhD program

The PhD program at the Department of Mathematical Sciences usually lasts 3 years. The typical entry level is a Master's Degree. The program consists first of all of an independent research project resulting in the end in a PhD thesis with publishable results.

It is also a part of the PhD program to follow a number of PhD courses totalling 30 ECTS, and our PhD students are expected to spend 3-6 months at a foreign research institution during the PhD program.

PhD students (except industrial PhD's) are required to teach, typically as teaching assistants. Our (advanced) courses are taught in English. Our PhD students must be able to teach in English and to follow courses taught in English.

Rankings – facts and figures

university of copenhagen phd accounting

University of Copenhagen: 5th best university in Europe

according to the CWTS Leiden Ranking .

What are rankings?

Each year a number of international rankings are published that seek to compare the World’s universities with each other. These rankings assess, among other things, the scope and quality of the universities' research and the quality of the teaching.

The University of Copenhagen has chosen primarily to follow four of the most influential rankings:

  • Academic Ranking of World Universities – ShanghaiRanking (ARWU)
  • CWTS Leiden Ranking
  • Quacquarelli Symonds – World University Rankings (QS)
  • Times Higher Education – World University Rankings (THE)

How does UCPH rank?

The University of Copenhagen is the highest-ranking university in Denmark and often the highest-ranking University in the Nordic Region.

The University of Copenhagen ranks among the top 1 percent of the World's universities.

University of Copenhagen's ranking by geographical region*

*  The listed years are the years indicated in the rankings. ** Number of publications in the top 10 per cent of most cited publications.

How are rankings calculated?

The methods behind rankings varies and some rankings adjust their method annually. Despite their limitations, rankings have considerable influence on a university's international reputation.

Read more about the methods behind the four rankings that the University of Copenhagen follows:

ARWU – Shanghai

  • Purely research-oriented and does not use reputation
  • Great emphasis on research indicators. Using Web of Science to calculate the number of citations, high level-publications and number of top one per cent most cited researchers. (70%)
  • ARWU does not include data from the Humanities
  • Emphasis on Nobel and Fields medals for employees/alumna (30%)

Read the entire method here

CWTS Leiden

  • CWTS Leiden Ranking does not provide an overall ranking on the basis of a total score like QS, THE and ARWU. Instead ranks are based on different parameters, such as number of top 10% most cited publications, etc.
  • Publication data is normalised, which makes it possible to compare universities despite differences in size and subject areas.
  • Uses Web of Science to compile their publication data
  • In connection with their annual ranking, CWTS Leiden also releases revised positions for previous years that take into account any changes in the methodology. UCPH’s overview shows the original ranking for the year.

Quacquarelli Symonds – QS

  • Great emphasis on reputation via questionnaires (50%)
  • Number of faculty are weighed in relation to the number of citations and number of students (40%)
  • International mix of academic staff and students is weighted (10%)
  • Uses the SCOPUS database for check of citations

Times Higher Education

  • Considers both research and education parameters
  • Great emphasis on reputation via questionnaires on both research and teaching (30%)
  • Uses the SCOPUS database to check citations (30%)
  • International mix of academic staff, students and collaboration is weighted (7.5%)
  • Technology transfer and cooperation are also considered (2.5%)

ECTS credits

university of copenhagen phd accounting

What is ECTS?

ECTS stands for European Credit Transfer System (in danish; ECTS points)

ECTS is a method of measuring your study programme as academic currency. Understanding ECTS makes it easier to understand the workload connected to your study programmes.

European Credit Transfer System

ECTS is used all over Europe and enables you to easily compare study programmes and transfer your academic qualifications from one educational institution to another. Its aim is to make programmes and the performance of students of higher education more transparent and comparable European-wide and to replace or complement the different local (national) standards within Europe.

The use of ECTS credits is compulsory in higher education in Europe. All Danish higher education programmes are described according to ECTS as a system for both credit transfer and academic credit accumulation towards the final degree.

Calculation and conversion of ECTS credits

According to the Danish Ministry of Education and Science, one year of studies corresponds to 60 ECTS credits and one semester corresponds to 30 ECTS credits. A 3-year full Bachelors programme, therefore, has 6 semesters and equals 180 ECTS credits. A 2-year Masters programme has 4 semesters and equals 120 ECTS credits. On average, one ECTS credit point equals between 25-30 working hours. This includes hours spent at the university as well as outside the university. The number of credits awarded for each course varies depending on the workload.

Mediterranean marine worm has developed eyes “as big as millstones"

Scientists are amazed at the discovery of a bristle worm with such sharp-seeing eyes that they can measure up to those of mammals and octopuses. The researchers from University of Copenhagen and Lund University suspect that these marine worms may have a secretive language, which uses UV light only seen by their own species. The advanced vision of such a primitive creature helps to finally settle an epic debate about the evolution of eyes.

Internet can achieve quantum speed with light saved as sound

Researchers at the University of Copenhagen’s Niels Bohr Institute have developed a new way to create quantum memory: A small drum can store data sent with light in its sonic vibrations, and then forward the data with new light sources when needed again. The results demonstrate that mechanical memory for quantum data could be the strategy that paves the way for an ultra-secure internet with incredible speeds.

NFL star, Super Bowl MVP Joe Flacco to speak at University of Delaware 2024 commencement

A notable UD accounting major is headed back for a visit.

University of Delaware is set to invite NFL quarterback, Super Bowl MVP — and 2008 University of Delaware graduate — Joe Flacco to deliver the 2024 Commencement address next month. The university-wide ceremony , 9:30 a.m. on May 25, will join several commencements and similar ceremonies across UD disciplines, from May 12 through May 25.

Details on various college-based commencement and convocation ceremonies  can be found online . All of these events are ticketed. Ticket reservations open April 18, and the window to secure those spots  closes May 10 .

“We are so thrilled to welcome Joe back home here at UD where he created a legacy for other outstanding Blue Hen student-athletes to emulate,” President Dennis Assanis said in a statement. “Joe embodies the UD values of leadership, teamwork, perseverance, excellence and resilience. We are incredibly proud to call him our own, and I know that his remarks will inspire the graduates of the Class of 2024.”

About 4,000 graduates are expected to listen in on the football star, per UD, before graduating in front of some 16,000 family and friends.

Joe Flacco heads back to UD

Joseph Vincent Flacco has spent his career at quarterback.

Before the NFL, he set 20 school records at UD, including yards passed in a single season — 4,263 in 2007 — and career completions — 595, according to UD . Fast forward to 2018, he and his wife, Dana, made a significant gift to support the University’s Whitney Athletics Center, a one-stop facility for all 600-plus student-athletes in all 21 D1 sports programs.

After university, he was a first-round NFL draft pick by the Baltimore Ravens in 2018. He led through six playoffs, three AFC championships and the Super Bowl XLVII title in 2012, when he was named MVP. Flacco has since played for the Denver Broncos, New York Jets and Philadelphia Eagles, according to UD .
