E4 DTP standard studentships

E4 DTP standard studentships are fully-funded for a minimum of 3.5 years (42 months). They include and cover:

Stipend based on the  UKRI standard rate , reviewed on an annual basis (currently £18,622 for 2023/2024), paid monthly;

  • Fees (Home Fees or International Fees*);
  • Research Costs to cover expenses needed for the research (e.g. equipment, consumables, fieldwork costs, conference travel and accommodation expenses, specific software). The Research Costs include the standard research costs allocation (RTSGs) plus, in some cases and depending on the project's specific requirements, some Additional Research Costs (ARCs)

The stipend can be extended to up to another 5 months through our two optional schemes (see our Programme Structure ), subject to the approval of the E4 DTP Management Board.

NERC's expectation is that the thesis is submitted by the end of the funding (although the maximum submission date will be 4 years from the PhD start date).

All applicants should be aware of the standard living costs in Edinburgh  before applying for the programme.

International Applicants and extra costs

Although the University of Edinburgh covers the difference between Home and International fees for international applicants, costs associated with the Visa, the IHS (Immigration Health Surcharge) and the travel can NOT be covered by the E4 DTP.

Applicants are advised to find out about these costs, together with the Visa application procedure, ahead of submitting their application, via our Student Immigration Service .

International Applicants

There are a number of university financial support schemes that students can apply to once on course. Please note that most of them are competitive and have strict eligibility criteria. One should not assume that they will get support via one or the other scheme.

*The University of Edinburgh will cover the difference between Home and International fees for international students

Some of past and current E4 DTP CASE partners

E4 DTP CASE studentships

Some E4 DTP projects include a CASE partner and are therefore called "CASE studentships". A CASE partner is a non-academic organisation within the public, private or third sector which have agreed to support the studentship by:

  • bringing expert advice and supervision throughout the PhD;
  • providing a first-rate, challenging research training experience, within the context of a mutually beneficial research collaboration;
  • contributing to the project budget (by supplementing the Additional Research Costs);
  • offering a placement at their premises to the student of between 3 and 18 months over the whole PhD.

Studying on a CASE project provides an amazing opportunity to see how research can be applied to real-world problems, get a direct experience of the non-academic world along PhD studies and develop connections and network out with academia. They can give access to a wider range of post-PhD employment opportunities.

CASE projects are labelled "Case award" on the list of supervisor-led projects and include a paragraph on CASE studentship at the bottom of the proposal.

You can read more about some CASE studentships experience through our alumni profiles:

Disabled Students Allowance (DSA)

Disabled Students Allowances are intended to help with additional costs of study-related requirements that may be incurred as a result of disability, mental health problems or specific learning difficulties that means additional support is needed to undertake a UKRI-funded studentship. The allowances can cover the cost of non-medical personal assistance, items of specialist equipment, extra travel costs and general expenses.

If you have any special requirements and would like to access DSA, please get in touch with the Student Disability Service to undertake needs assessment.

  • Student Disability Service

Your stipend payments will continue for absences covered by a medical certificate for up to thirteen weeks within any 12 month period. If the illness lasts for more than thirteen weeks your stipend will be suspended in accordance with UKRI guidelines.

  • IGS guidance in interruptions of study
  • PGR Sick Pay entitlements

Maternity, Paternity, Adoption and Parental Leave

UKRI funded Students are entitled to 52 weeks of maternity or shared parental leave. The first 26 weeks should be paid at full stipend rate, pro-rated as necessary for part time Students. The following 13 weeks should be paid at a level commensurate with statutory maternity pay. The final 13 weeks are not paid.

Partners are entitled to up to 10 days paid Ordinary Paternity Leave on full stipend.

Partners may be entitled to up to 50 weeks of Shared Parental Leave; this may include paid and unpaid leave, depending on the individual circumstances, any paid leave should be at full stipend.

Adoption leave should be granted on the same basis as maternity leave.

There is no qualifying period for maternity, paternity, adoption or shared parental leave.

  • IGS guidance on parental leave

Caring responsibilities

The costs of additional caring responsibilities, including childcare, beyond that required to meet the usual requirements of the studentship and which are directly related to the project, may be claimed against the CDT grant where this is required in order for the student to participate. However, costs associated with the student’s normal working patterns may not be sought.

Tax and National Insurance

Payments made as part of a UKRI funded Studentship are training awards and not regarded as income for income tax purposes. No additional payments will be made for your National Insurance contributions. You can, if you wish, pay contributions as non-employed persons. You should consult your local office of the Department for Work and Pensions about your position to determine the impact of non-payment of contributions on any future claims for benefit including the basic State Pension.

Your earnings received from sources such as teaching and demonstrating may be taxable and should be aggregated with income from any employment when assessing income tax liability in any tax year.

How to apply for a PhD

PhD Student Applications

PhD Applications

The postgraduate research degree offered at the School of Mathematics is the PhD.  The PhD programme is three years in length with an additional year to write up and submit your thesis should it be needed. However, please note if you are offered a fully funded place, you will receive four years of funding (stipend and all fees). The students admitted typically have an MSc degree, or 1 st  class honours degree (or its international equivalent). From the start of their studies, they are assigned a main supervisor with whom they work closely throughout their degree programme and a second supervisor who provides additional help and pastoral support. Applications are invited for PhD studies for September each year. Occasionally students are admitted at other times of the year by special arrangement.  To request the possibility of admission at another time of the year, please  email  the Graduate School with further details of your request.

All applications received by  22 January 2024 will receive full consideration for funding.  Later applications will be considered until all positions are filled.

If you are applying for EDCS or the China Scholarship, please ensure you check the relevant application deadline. These scholarships do require a separate application.  The deadline for EDCS applications is 19 February 2024.

We accept applications from students who have secured external funding at all times of the year - Please make this clear on your application, and if you are in contact with a potential supervisor.

How to Apply

Step 1: meet our entry requirements.

Our minimum entry requirements are a 1 st  class Honours degree (or its international equivalent) OR a 2:1 Honours degree (or its international equivalent) plus a Masters degree (or its international equivalent) in a relevant subject. Typically, candidates have a good understanding of the field they propose to study, and some research experience.

Students applying for a research degree should identify their research interests and determine in which  research group  they wish to carry out their work. They are encouraged to contact staff members prior to their application in order to identify possible research projects and supervisors. However, it is not essential for you to have secured a supervisor before submitting your application. You can note proposed supervisor(s) on your appliction form.

Non-UK candidates may be required to provide a evidence of proficiency in the English language. For full details on English language requirements, please see this page . Applicants must have one of the following qualifications as evidence of their English language ability:

an undergraduate or masters degree, that was taught and assessed in English in a majority English speaking country as defined by UK Visas and Immigration ( UKVI list of majority English speaking countries )

  • IELTS Academic: total 6.5 with at least 6.0 in each component
  • TOEFL-iBT : total 92 with at least 20 in each section
  • PTE(A) : total 61 with at least 56 in each of the Communicative Skills scores
  • CAE and CPE : total 176 with at least 169 in each paper
  • Trinity ISE : ISE II with distinctions in all four components

Degrees taught and assessed in English must be no more than 3.5 years old at the date of the beginning of your degree programme. English language test certificates must be no more than 2 years old at the beginning of your degree programme, or 3.5 years for CAE & CPE.

Step 2: Apply online

Make an online application to the appropriate PhD programme(s) (see below) . You will be asked to upload documents at the start of the application process.

The documentation that we require you to upload to your application is:

  • Interim or final transcript(s)  - (depending on what stage you are at in your studies) of your Undergraduate Degree, and Masters Degree, if applicable.
  • Final degree certificate(s) - for your Undergraduate Degree, and Masters Degree, if applicable.
  • Two academic references to be provided directly by referees. Enter their names and email addresses in the required areas, and an automated email will be forwarded to them requesting a reference upload. We will not accept references uploaded by applicants.
  • A CV - You can upload this in the place of a research proposal, which is not required for your application.
  • English Language Test Certificate (where applicable) - please see here .

Where you are asked for your project proposal, you may ignore that request, the School of Mathematics does not require a research proposal . Although the EUCLID application system will request that you upload one, you can just ignore this request. The reason that you will be asked for one is that the system applies to all Schools throughout the University and some Schools do require a research proposal. In the place of a research proposal, please upload an up to date CV. There is no need to upload any certificates for the degree you are currently studying (if you have not been issued one) - instead, official interim transcripts will be required.

Official translations of any documents not in written English are required.

On the application form, where it asks for funding information - please enter 'School of Mathematics'. Each application will automatically be considered for one of our scholarships. Please indicate any other potential source of funding you have, have applied for or are intending to apply for (see Step 3).  If you have secured external funding, please provide evidence of the funding along with your application.

Step 3: Funding

Please review and apply for all applicable sources of funding noted on the What funding is available for your PhD  page.

Please apply via the research pages below:

  • Algebra PhD
  • Analysis PhD
  • Applied and Computational Mathematics PhD

Different eligibilities, deadlines and selection procedures apply depending on the source of funding as outlined below. Appointments to PhD studentships can only be made by formal application through the EUCLID Postgraduate Admissions web page .

Studentships via School of Chemistry

These types of studentships cover all fees and a living expenses stipend for eligible students. Early contact with the potential PhD supervisor is encouraged to verify eligibility before submitting a formal application. Please note that in the majority of cases, eligibility for these studentships is restricted to UK or EU nationals.

  • Fully funded studentships

Studentships via Centres for Doctoral Training

The School of Chemistry is both leading, and involved in, many Centres for Doctoral Training, funded by the UK research councils, industry and the UK Government. Applications for these PhD studentships often require the support of a PhD supervisor who is partnered with a particular Training Centre. • Prize Scholarship studentships

Self-funded PhD Studentships

Occasionally, students who have obtained a qualifying degree with an upper 2nd class honours degree or higher (or equivalent) may wish to self-fund their PhD studies. Subject to a successful interview with a potential supervisor, applicants are required to demonstrate the ability to cover the costs of 3 years of postgraduate tuition fees at the appropriate home/EU or overseas rate, and be able to support themselves financially throughout the 3-year duration of the PhD. Additional bench fees may apply depending on the research project and group being applied for.

International students requiring visas will also need to demonstrate complete financial independence to the UK Border Agency. Candidates enrolled on full-time PhD programmes are not permitted to seek outside work alongside their PhD. All applicants eligible to pay overseas tuition fees are encouraged to apply for Tercentenary Scholarships , while graduates of the University of Edinburgh are eligible to apply for a tuition fee discount.

Applicants who wish to explore this possibility should contact a potential supervisor clearly stating their intention to self-fund. In some cases, partial funding from a supervisor or Scholarship scheme may be available.

Graduate student strike ends at Indiana University

F riday marks the end to a three-day strike held by Indiana University graduate students. The students are pushing for union recognition and better wages.

"Grades don't get entered, papers aren't read, quizzes won't be graded if grad students aren't there," Bryce Greene said. "Students won't get assistance, there's a personal touch that comes with that education that grad students are an essential part of."

Since Wednesday, the students have had picket signs instead of books in their hands and skipped classes.

"Despite how wonderful the department is, there's structural problems within the university that make education inaccessible," graduate student Matthew Rodriguez said.

The Indiana Graduate Workers Coalition says they've spent years fighting for better wages. But it wasn't until a strike in 2022 when the university raised wages by 50%.

A university spokesperson told 13News the minimum stipend for grad students will be $23,000 next school year. Along with the stipend, the university offers free tuition and health insurance to graduate students.

IGWC members want the stipend to be raised by $5,000 to $28,000.

"Even under the current stipend we currently make, they are almost half of what the living wage is in Monroe County," IGWC spokesperson David Garner said.

Just one day before the strike started, IU faculty voted no confidence in President Pamela Whitten and two administrators. IGWC leaders say the vote was the start of the change they are wanting.

In response to the no-confidence vote, Whitten wrote:

"While we will not always agree, our community is made stronger by an array of viewpoints and voices—including those expressed as part of this process.

We serve at a time when trust in higher education is at record lows, and expectations for our role as an economic and cultural driver are at record highs. Our self-concept of purpose and value often differs wildly from how we are viewed by lawmakers, civic leaders, industry and much of the general public. Such differences are not tenable forever.

There is no going back to an earlier time. Demographic changes, resulting financial realities, and political developments are only accelerating. To combat the challenges that mark this new environment, I welcome thoughtful ideas and consideration."

IGWC said they hope the faculty who voted no confidence will stand with them in their fight.

After this strike, IGWC told 13News they are working with other university organizations to create a statewide movement. Another student organization, the Indiana Daily Student newspaper, will stage a walkout Thursday, April 25 in response to budget cuts.

K-State students receive NSF Graduate Research Fellowship awards

Tuesday, April 23, 2024

MANHATTAN — Eight current and former K-State students were selected or named honorable mention for the National Science Foundation's Graduate Research Fellowship Program , a five-year fellowship that includes an annual stipend of $37,000. The current students selected for the program are Kalea Nippert, senior in ecology and evolutionary biology, St. George ; Kale Stahl, senior in applied mathematics and physics, Topeka ; Carson Connard , senior in mathematics, The Woodlands, Texas ; and Shannon Ruble, doctoral student in psychology, Parkersburg, West Virginia . The NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program, or NSF GRFP, recognizes graduate students pursuing research-based master's and doctoral degrees in mathematics, engineering, technology or science. Its purpose is to maintain quality, vitality and diversity in the nation's scientific and engineering workforce. "These exceptional students have been honored with this prestigious fellowship, showcasing not only their academic ability but also their commitment to pushing the boundaries of knowledge," said David Rosowsky, vice president for research. "We are proud of their achievements and anticipate the groundbreaking discoveries and innovations they will lead in the future." Nippert, who will graduate in May, has been completing an undergraduate research project under Zak Ratajczak, assistant professor of biology, since 2022. Her research is focused on understanding extreme fire effects within woody plant communities and if extreme fire could be used as a management strategy to control woody encroachment occurring throughout global grassland and savanna ecosystems. "The NSF GRFP will allow me to be fully funded — my tuition will be paid for the duration of my Ph.D. at the University of North Carolina Greensboro," Nippert said. "This will help me reach my goals of getting a Ph.D. and becoming a research ecologist. I am very honored and excited to have the chance to receive the GRFP." Stahl is researching inverse scattering problems, with Dinh-Liem Nguyen, associate professor of mathematics. The purpose of their research is to develop a stable "imaging functional" for periodic objects. "The GRF is a very prestigious award, and receiving it will allow me to focus on research and passing my qualifying exams in my first years of graduate school," Stahl said. "I will be attending Purdue University's mathematics Ph.D. program in the fall, and this fellowship will allow me to start research almost immediately. I'm very excited that I will be able to do more research earlier, as research is by far my favorite part of studying mathematics." Connard, who will graduate Summa Cum Laude in May, is working with Lino Amorim, associate professor of mathematics, on a project focused on developing algebraic invariants for Lagrangian suborbifolds. "The GRFP will not only allow me to focus significantly more time and energy on research in graduate school, but it will also allow me to live more comfortably due to the generous size of the fellowship," Connard said. "I intend to pursue my Ph.D., and I aim to work in research — ideally in the academic realm — as a career. I am absolutely and completely honored to have received this prestigious distinction, and I have only just begun to reap its benefits." Connard will attend the University of Washington in the fall to pursue his Ph.D. Ruble is in her second year studying neural mechanisms of fear and avoidance behaviors in rats and how social interactions impact them. She is conducting her research with Maria Diehl, professor of psychological sciences. Ruble, who will complete her doctorate in the spring of 2027, said that after she earns her Ph.D., she plans to pursue a career in either academia or science communication. "The NSF GRFP provides me with an opportunity to conduct high-quality research and communicate the findings through publications and conference presentations," Ruble said. "I will also be able to mentor undergraduates involved in my GRFP-funded work and help them pursue careers in STEM as I would in a future career in academia." Abigail Schmidt, senior in environmental biology and natural resources and environmental science, Shawnee , was named honorable mention. Her research focuses on how climate extremes, like drought, will impact ecosystem structure and function. Ratajczak, assistant professor biology, is her research mentor. Schmidt will attend graduate school at Utah State University to study savanna ecosystems. Along with Nippert, Stahl, Connard, Ruble and Schmidt, three recent K-State graduates were also selected for the fellowship or named honorable mention: Reilly Jensen, a May 2021 bachelor's graduate in Spanish and biology, Buhler , who is at Wichita State University, fellowship recipient; Maxwell Harman, a May 2022 bachelor's graduate in biochemistry, Inman , who is now at Michigan State University, fellowship recipient; and Cole Wilson, May 2021 bachelor's graduate in biochemistry, Wichita , who is now at Northwestern University, honorable mention. Please visit the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program website for more information about the program. Kansas State University undergraduates and first-year graduate students interested in applying for the NSF Graduate Fellowship should contact Beth Powers, director of Scholar Development and Undergraduate Research and the Office of Nationally Competitive Scholarships , at [email protected] .

Research profile

Based at the historic Royal Observatory Edinburgh, the Institute for Astronomy (IfA) is one of the world’s leading centres in astronomical research.

We share our picturesque base on Blackford Hill with the UK Astronomy Technology Centre (ATC) – the UK’s leading astronomical instrument maker – so as a postgraduate student you will be joining a vibrant community of specialists.

The scope of our research is as wide as the cosmos we explore. Thanks to our affiliation with the UK ATC and our strong links with related research centres in the School of Physics & Astronomy, we are in a rare position to accommodate a diversity of research specialisms.

Our current areas of research include:

  • cosmology (large-scale structure in the universe, galaxy formation, dark matter and dark energy)
  • active galactic nuclei and related objects
  • nearby galaxies (large-scale star formation, structure, content and evolution of galaxies)
  • stellar astronomy (parallax and proper motion studies, the stellar luminosity function, symbiotic stars)
  • star formation (observation and theoretical studies, star formation in external galaxies)
  • planet formation (disc and planet formation in protostars, discs around pre-main-sequence stars)
  • computational astrophysics (through the Edinburgh Centre for Computational Astrophysics)

Training and support

Our students undertake thesis-related research from the outset, but in parallel with structured education in relevant background knowledge.

In the first year there is a reading group that covers the basics of astrophysics in a series of tutorials. Also during this year, you will take a variety of advanced courses in physics and astrophysics, as advised by your supervisor. These courses are part of the graduate school of the Scottish Universities Physics Alliance (SUPA).

  • Scottish Universities Physics Alliance (SUPA)

Not only will you be surrounded by a wealth of expertise at the Royal Observatory, but our historic setting also provides a constant reminder of the importance of astronomical advances throughout the centuries.

Observational PhDs have access to large telescopes in Australia, Hawaii, Chile and the Canary Islands, plus the Hubble Space Telescope.
