First of all, get in contact with a UZH professor who is willing and able to supervise your doctoral project. If you are interested in participating in a PhD program, you should first of all carefully read through the application procedures for the program in question. Doctoral programs at UZH

The doctorate is comprised of a PhD thesis as well as coursework. It serves as a qualification for an academic career or other demanding professions.

As a general rule, a Master's degree or an equivalent degree from an accredited university is the prerequisite for admission to the doctorate. Certain criteria regarding content as well as formal conditions (e.g. grade-point average, qualification phases) are also considered when processing applications.

Admission to Doctoral Studies

The requirements for admission and the admission procedures are set out in the ordinance for obtaining a doctoral degree at the faculty in question. Some faculties also offer a  fast-track  doctoral program, a program for particularly talented students in which the Master's degree and PhD are integrated in a single program of study. The individual programs define their PhD programs' admission procedures – which, as a rule, are highly competitive.

Please note that PhD candidates must be matriculated at the University for the duration of their doctorate, i.e. until they have been conferred the final degree. 

Application and admission Application period

Writing a PhD thesis – independent and original academic work – forms the core part of the doctorate. The thesis can take the form of a monograph or consist of several publications on a single subject which have been published in scientific journals (a cumulative PhD thesis). You can find more information about the formal requirements in the doctoral program regulations for your subject area. As a general rule, however, the thesis should be of such scope and content that it can be completed within three years.

The required coursework serves to enhance subject-specific skills, but also goes toward developing transferable skills. All coursework will be recorded in your final transcript of records and Academic Record. Coursework requirements can be fulfilled by attending courses in your subject area, by visiting classes from the main pool of courses in transferable skills (transferable skills and university-level teaching), or, in some cases by attending courses at another institution. Alongside the required coursework (including transferable skills), it is highly recommended that PhD candidates develop their teaching skills. Transferable skills courses University-level teaching  

In many disciplines at UZH there are two types of doctoral programs offered: the individual doctorate and the structured doctoral programs . Moreover there are also interdisciplinary and inter-university schools or programs, partly financed by third-party funds. Doctoral Programs

Because the various faculties at UZH are thematically and structurally so diverse, each faculty is in charge of designing its own PhD program.

Various types of academic employment opportunities at UZH are open to junior scholars. During doctoral study, you can find employment as a «PhD candidate» or an «academic assistant»; postdocs receive positions as «postdocs» or «senior research and teaching assistants». These junior academic positions are an integral part of the procedure when pursuing an academic career. Junior academic positions are by nature temporary and are funded either by the university department in question or by a third party. Junior academic positions give young scholars the opportunity to achieve their next professional goal and to further qualify themselves for a career in academia. The main requirement for earning the necessary academic qualifications is performing individual research, but junior researchers are also given the opportunity to qualify themselves for teaching roles. In 2003 the guidelines for specifications at UZH faculties for employees holding junior academic positions were issued to define the rights and duties of UZH employees in junior academic positions. These were revised in fall 2023 and a new employment model was defined, which will come into effect on January 1, 2024. Employees with the status of a junior academic receive individual specifications which refer explicitly to their job description.

Structured PhD Program «Epidemiology and Biostatistics»

The PhD program in Epidemiology and Biostatistics is one of 17 programs of the Life Science Zurich Graduate School offering a dynamic and stimulating international research environment. The overall goal is to train PhD students in designing, conducting and analyzing research studies in biomedicine. Depending on the specific research area students are expected to acquire core competencies in epidemiology or biostatistics.

The duration of the program is approximately 3-4 years. Graduates will obtain their PhD from either University of Zurich or ETH Zurich, depending on the affiliation of the main supervisor. The program language is English. If you are interested in the methodological foundations of clinical and population-based biomedical research and would like to join our PhD program, please apply through the online application system . The University of Zurich UBS Center Scholarship are full scholarships awarded every year to outstanding university graduates to enable them to take up their doctoral studies at the Zurich Graduate School of Economics, run by the Department of Economics at the University of Zurich. Furthermore, by funding new endowed chairs at the Department of Economics, the UBS Center will create additional doctoral positions for talented young researchers beyond the scholarship scheme. This will ensure that the Zurich Graduate School of Economics achieves a critical mass of top young talent to create a leading international graduate school with an attractive research environment.

The University of Zurich, located in the city of Zürich, is the largest university in Switzerland, with its 28,000 enrolled students. It was founded in 1833 from the existing colleges of theology, law, medicine which go back to 1525, and a new faculty of philosophy

The UBS Center Scholarships cover living expenses(Approx. CHF 42’500 p.a) plus all tuition fees.

University of Zurich   Scholarships are open to graduates from around the world, they are awarded to candidates on the grounds of outstanding academic merit, and continuing support will be subject to satisfactory completion of course work. While preference may be given to students whose research plans include areas of interest of the UBS International Center of Economics in Society, applications from all areas are welcomed.

Admission to the Zurich Graduate School of Economics is a pre-condition for being considered for a UBS Center Scholarship.

The UBS Center Scholarships are full scholarships, covering living expenses and all fees. Scholarship holders are free to choose their supervisor and have no mandatory duties beyond the completion of the course work and their doctorate. We do however encourage students to contribute to departmental teaching because it is in their own interest to acquire good teaching skills.

Scholarships are offered to award holders for a period of four years, subject to satisfactory completion of course work.

Applicants need to apply for admission to the Zurich Graduate School of Economics where they indicate that they are applying for a UBS Center Scholarship.

Engineering for Development (E4D) Doctoral Scholarship Programme

The goal of the Engineering for Development (E4D) Programme is to promote research and education for people in low-income countries.

The E4D Programme is generously funded through the external page Sawiris Foundation for Social Development call_made and the  external page Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation. call_made

The grant sum is 200'000 CHF to cover the salary costs of the doctoral students for three years. ETH professors cover the 4th year of the doctoral studies as well as costs related to the research itself.

The deadline to submit concept notes via email for the current call for fellowship applications is 30 April, 2024.

• Experience in the selected research area is required.
• Applicants should be citizens of low- and lower-middle-income countries according to the external page OECD DAC-2024-2025 list call_made .
• The doctoral supervisor must be an ETH professor and must have a guaranteed ETH position for the entire duration of the proposed project. Candidates may be co-supervised by advisors at at a Federal Research Instittue (Eawag, Empa, PSI, & WSL), but they must also have an advisorship from a professor at ETH Zurich. 
• It is expected that the ETH Zurich professor supports the candidate in elaborating the full proposal, if the concept note should be selected, and to supervise the candidate, if the full proposal is selected for funding.
• The supervisor confirms their commitment to the project by a letter of support, indicating their contribution to the project in cash or kind.
• The research topic is within the thematic scope of ETH Zurich.
• The proposal is a new doctoral project, not complementary funding to an on-going research.
• Subject of the proposed research is the development of methods, technologies, tools or products, which generate a direct impact for underprivileged people in low-income countries.
• The ecological, socio-economic and cultural context is taken into account.
• Projects involving research partners from a low-income country have to be based on the KFPE principles.
• All partners are involved in project formulation and development.
• All partners make a substantial in-kind or cash commitment.
• The project is integrated in the general activities of the involved institutions.
• Projects must include partners from countries on the external page OECD DAC-2024-25 call_made  list.

New ETH4D Doctoral Fellowship for Global Impact

After 10 years of successful operation, the E4D Doctoral Scholarship Programme will begin a new phase in 2024.

The programme supports doctoral students from low- and middle-income countries to work on innovations  at ETH  that have the potential to improve the lives of people in poor and fragile regions.

For Foreign Scholars and Artists for the 2024-2025 Academic Year

Each year the Swiss Confederation awards Government Excellence Scholarships to promote international exchange and research cooperation between Switzerland and over 180 other countries. Recipients are selected by the awarding body, the Federal Commission for Scholarships for Foreign Students (FCS).

The Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships are aimed at young researchers from abroad who have completed a master’s degree or PhD and at foreign artists holding a bachelor’s degree.

The research scholarship ( research fellowship , PhD , Postdoc ) is available to post-graduate researchers in any discipline (who hold a master’s degree is the minimum qualification required) who are planning to come to Switzerland to pursue research or further studies at doctoral or post-doctoral level.

Research scholarships are awarded for research or study at all Swiss cantonal universities, universities of applied sciences and the two federal institutes of technology, as well as the four research institutes. Only candidates nominated by an academic supervisor at one of these higher education institutions will be considered.

• To enable selected applicants to undertake research in the realm of their PhD at one of the 10 Swiss cantonal universities, the two Swiss federal institutes of technology, the public teaching and research institutes or the universities of applied sciences.
• Valid for full-time research in Switzerland only.

Target Group

• Highly qualified postgraduate researchers from all academic fields as well as young medical doctors.
• Primarily for scholars who have not already been to Switzerland.

Eligibility Criteria

• Master’s degree or equivalent achieved before 31 July 2024 (except: ETH Zurich: 30 June 2024). Degree certificate completed.
• Applicants must be born after 31 December 1988.
• A research proposal including a timeframe.
• Mandatory letter from an academic host professor (including their short CV).
• Scholarship starts for the academic year 2024-25: 1 September 2024.
• 12 months maximum (starting in September).
• No prolongation possible.
• The scholarship amounts to a monthly payment of CHF 1’920.-
• The scholarship amount covers the living costs of one person only.
• This scholarship is not a salary.

• The candidate: academic profile, research capacity and motivation.
• The research project: originality and methodological soundness.
• The academic context: quality and context of supervision and potential for future academic cooperation.

Art scholarships are open to art students wishing to pursue an initial arts master’s degree in Switzerland.

Art scholarships are awarded for study at any Swiss conservatory or university of the arts. This scholarship is available to students from a limited number of countries only.

• To enable selected applicants to undertake initial Master’s studies in Switzerland at any Swiss conservatory or university of the arts.
• Highly qualified young artists without Master degree.
• Art scholarships only available to citizens of countries with which Switzerland has a reciprocity agreement for art scholarships.
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent achieved before 31 July 2024. Degree certificate completed.
• Invalid: All applications for a second master’s degree.
• Prolongable up to 21 months at most depending on the Master programme chosen and the necessary ECTS credits.
• The scholarship amounts to a monthly payment of CHF 1'920.-
• The candidate: artistic profile, qualification and motivation.
• The submitted portfolio: artistic maturity and potential.
• The host institute: available study places.

The FCS assesses scholarship applications according to three criteria:

• Quality of the research project or artistic work
• Synergies and potential for future research cooperation

The FCS is composed of professors from Swiss public universities. Scholarship awards are decided on the basis of academic and scientific excellence.

The FCS will announce its decisions regarding the new scholarship awards by the end of May at the latest.

The FCS will select scholarship holders for the 2024-25 academic year by the end of May 2024. Scholarships for the 2025-26 academic year will be advertised online from August 2024.

About the Award:  The University of Zurich UBS Center Scholarship are full scholarships awarded every year to outstanding university graduates to enable them to take up their doctoral studies at the Zurich Graduate School of Economics, run by the Department of Economics at the University of Zurich. Furthermore, by funding new endowed chairs at the Department of Economics, the UBS Center will create additional doctoral positions for talented young researchers beyond the scholarship scheme. Eligibility/Qualification: We are seeking a highly motivated M2 student with a keen interest in synthetic methodology, catalysis, sustainable chemistry, and proficiency in RMN and HPLC analysis. Applicants should hold a CV, transcripts of M1 and M2, and contact details for recommendations.

Description: The doctoral project focuses on investigating and harnessing the potential of novel nickel complexes, such as [NiL], to optimize their catalytic capabilities in unprecedented diastereo- and enantioselective transformations based on various functionalizations of unactivated C-H bonds. Active species will be generated in situ through a groundbreaking cooperative catalysis approach between [NiL] organometallic complexes and OrgCat organocatalysts. Together, we will embark on a quest to explore new molecular spaces and uncover novel chemical reactivities!

• Supporting Documents : Pre-selection of candidates is based on the submitted application file, including a copy of an application dossier (CV, academic transcripts, GMAT/GRE Test score, detailed research proposal, and indication of potential advisors at the Department). Also, submit outstanding letters of recommendation from at least two professors from the school where you finished your most relevant degree.
• Admission Requirements : GMAT or GRE is recommended for all applicants. Applicants need a Master of Science in Finance or Economics degree deemed equivalent by the local Admission Committee, composed of finance professors from the University of Zurich.
• Language Requirement : The working language of the Program is English. For non-native English speakers, applicants may submit their results of a standardized English test, such as the TOEFL, which has to be at least 7.0.
• Most accepted students are granted admission with a stipend of about 2500 CHF per month. This amount is more than enough for a student to live in Zurich.
• Due to the limited number of fully-funded positions, the University encourages candidates to apply for the first round deadline (January 15th).

Academic Scholarships

Competitively awarded, Pitt academic  scholarships are based on a combination of outstanding academic achievement, holistic factors provided in a candidate’s personal statement or Common Application essay, and potential for scholarly contributions to the University of Pittsburgh community. Incoming first-year students who have a completed application for admission with all required materials by December 1 are automatically considered for University of Pittsburgh academic scholarships. Additionally, the Chancellor’s Scholarship is awarded to incoming first-year students to Frederick Honors College.

Eligibility for Scholarships

Incoming first-year students are considered for University of Pittsburgh academic scholarships. Continuing students are encouraged to seek potential scholarship funding through the University’s scholarship database, PittFund$Me .  In addition to meeting the December 1 completed application deadline, the following criteria also apply:

• Submission of a personal statement or the Common Application essay is required for scholarship consideration.
• Some scholarships require participation in an interview prior to selection and/or may have additional requirements (see scholarship types below).
• Students admitted for the spring semester are not eligible for scholarship consideration.

University Scholarships are the most common type of merit award and are primarily academic scholarships based on performance in high school. Criteria include weighted grade point average, rigor of curriculum (AP/IB/Honors courses), class rank (if applicable), and SAT/ACT results (if applicable). In addition, various non-numerical, holistic factors, as presented in the personal statement or Common Application essay, that describe the candidate’s background are also a part of the review process. These holistic factors allow for a diverse and multi-talented student body. Holistic criteria may include exceptional and unique talents, commitment to community service and leadership, significant family, job, or community responsibility, and contributions to diversity.

Number, Value, and Term of University Scholarships

University Scholarships range from $2,000 per year to $20,000 per year. University Scholarships are available for four years/eight semesters of undergraduate study provided the recipient maintains Satisfactory Academic Progress and meets all other terms and conditions of the award. Notification of Award

Due to the competitiveness of University Scholarships, most admitted students are reviewed by the Scholarship Committee several times before a final decision is made. As a result, those students selected to receive an award will be notified anytime between late-October and March 1, regardless of the date admitted.  Only students who are selected to receive an award will be notified.

The Chancellor’s Scholarship is one of the University of Pittsburgh’s most prestigious awards. Awarded to incoming first-year students admitted to Frederick Honors College, Chancellor’s Scholars receive the individualized attention of an academically demanding small college along with the scholarly advantages of a major research university. Scholarship Details

The Chancellor’s Scholarship is a four-year undergraduate award covering:

• Full tuition
• Mandatory fees
• Average room and board plan
• Guaranteed Frederick Honors College housing
• Candidates must meet the December 1 Frederick Honors College application deadline and be admitted into Frederick Honors College
• Must be a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident
• Must be an incoming first-year student
• Must maintain full-time enrollment at the Pittsburgh campus

Selection Process

No more than 50 students admitted to Frederick Honors College will be invited to an on-campus interview with the Chancellor’s Scholarship Selection Committee consisting of the Frederick Honors College dean, director of advising, and academic advisors.

Selections for interviews are competitively based on a candidate’s high school academic record (submitted as part of the application for admission), results of the SAT/ACT (if applicable), and quality of the required Frederick Honors College application essay questions. In addition, the Selection Committee will also seek an interview pool fairly representing the incoming class as demonstrated by academic schools/majors and demographics, including residency, gender,etc.

Interview notifications will be sent in early-March and interviews will take place throughout the month of March. Only those candidates invited to the on-campus interviews will be notified.

Those participants in the Chancellor’s Scholarship interview process are notified of their final status no later than mid-April. Each year, approximately 15 members of the incoming class are recipients of this competitive scholarship.

Scholarship Renewal Requirements

The Chancellor’s Scholarship can be used for four years/eight semesters of full-time undergraduate study at the University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh Campus. To renew the scholarship on an annual basis, recipients must:

Scholarships for international students can amount to up to $10,000 per year and are generally available for eight full-time undergraduate terms, provided the recipient maintains Satisfactory Academic Progress and meets all of the other terms and conditions of the specific award. Eligibility

International freshmen who apply before February 1 will be reviewed for international student scholarships. International transfer students are not eligible for scholarship consideration.

Application Procedure

Students interested in being reviewed for scholarships must submit a completed application for admission and supporting credentials by February 1 at the latest. Students meeting that deadline are automatically reviewed for scholarships. The Committee makes decisions weekly on a rolling basis. Therefore, if you would like to increase your chances for scholarships, it is in your best interest to apply early.

Students who are selected to receive a scholarship will be notified by April 1.

There is not a separate scholarship application for University of Pittsburgh academic scholarships, though if you wish to be considered for scholarships you will be required to complete the Short Answer Question.

What is the Tuition Exchange organization?

The University of Pittsburgh is a member of The Tuition Exchange which is a reciprocal scholarship program that allows dependent children of our faculty and staff to apply for competitive scholarships to other participating member institutions. The Tuition Exchange (TE) Scholarship organization requires that participating institutions maintain a balance between the number of students enrolled at host institutions (exported) with a TE scholarship and the number of students from other member schools who are enrolled at the home institution (imported) and supported with a TE scholarship. As a member, the University of Pittsburgh agrees to abide by the national policies and practices of the organization.

The Nordenberg Leadership Scholars Program is designed to reward the best and brightest student leaders from high schools in Pennsylvania who have demonstrated excellent leadership skills, innovative thinking, intellectual curiosity, and community involvement.

Nordenberg Leadership Scholars are provided with the resources for a rich collegiate experience with opportunities for academic achievement, leadership development, civic engagement, and interaction with organizations and corporations in the Pittsburgh region.

Each year, up to five graduating high school seniors from Pennsylvania will be selected to participate in the four-year program. Nordenberg Leadership Scholars will each receive a full-tuition scholarship for eight terms, which may include one international experience as well as assistance with securing internship positions throughout their time at Pitt.

Application Process

Candidates must submit the PA Scholars application and a completed application for admission no later than December 1.

Representatives of the University of Pittsburgh Office of Admissions and Financial Aid and the Division of Student Affairs will interview a select number of semifinalists by March 1. Recipients of the Nordenberg Leadership Scholarships will be notified of their selection on or before April 1.

The Nordenberg Leadership Scholarship can be used for four years/eight semesters of full-time undergraduate study at the University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh campus. To renew the scholarship on an annual basis, recipients must:

In partnership with the Stamps Scholars Program , the University of Pittsburgh is proud to offer the prestigious and generous Stamps Scholarship to five incoming first-year students from Pennsylvania. As a University of Pittsburgh Stamps Scholar, recipients will be provided with a comprehensive understanding of leadership from a domestic and global perspective.

Valued in excess of $160,000, the Stamps Scholarship is a four -year undergraduate award covering:

• An allowance for books and supplies, transportation expenses, and personal costs

Graduate Assistantship: Office of Research Development and the Graduate School

The Office of Major Scholarships (OMS), the Office of Research Development, and the  Graduate School are seeking to hire a graduate student starting in Spring 2024 to support graduate students’ fellowship applications. The incumbent will have office space in Stodder Hall (ORD) and Estabrooke Hall (OMS).  

The primary responsibilities of the graduate assistant include:  

• Liaise between the Office of Major Scholarships, the Office of Research Development, and the  Graduate School in the activities that support graduate fellowships  
• Work side by side with ORD and with OMS to support UMaine graduate student participation in a  targeted list of fellowships  
• Design, disseminate, and promote outreach materials  
• Provide logistic support for, and present at, outreach events  
• Keep updated contact lists of support staff, faculty allies, and interested students  
• Track submissions, awards, etc. 
• Provide initial feedback on scholarship application materials  
• Create and maintain relationships with graduate student organizations and groups  

Required qualifications:  

• Strong interpersonal communication skills 
• Ability to design and give engaging presentations 
• Ability to work independently, initiate tasks, think creatively, and share ideas  
• Comfort communicating with a wide range of audiences (graduate students, faculty, higher  administration)

Applicants must be admitted to a UMaine graduate degree program and enrolled full-time (credits will depend on candidacy for PhD students). Graduate students from any discipline are welcome to apply. Preference will be given to PhD students at the start of their program.  

This 9-month position requires a commitment of 20 hours per week during regular office hours.  The appointment carries a monthly stipend of approximately $2117.17 (PhD student) or $1,833.33  (Masters student) plus a tuition waiver for up to 9 graduate credits per semester, and up to 6 graduate credits during the Summer Term and 50% of the insurance premium if covered under a plan offered by the University of Maine. The University of Maine System Research Reinvestment Fund (RRF) provides support for this appointment.
