I watched many C-dramas and never interested in any idol until Xiao Zhan. I enjoy watching his dramas. Xiao Zhan is a talented actor, singer, designer, painter, and he works hard at his crafts. He brought the character to life in each of his drama whether it’s a period or modern. Also, he must be a sincere person for his fans (whether in China or International) are loyal to their idol. I saw the red sea they gave him when he came on a show in late 2020. C-entertaiment industry should value this actor.

I honestly did not know about the 221 incident, and now that I know, I don’t really care. He is obviously a good person, and deserves all the praise in the world for all his accomplishments and his work. After watching him in “The Untamed” and some of his clips on YouTube, it is very much obvious he loves his work. Nothing should have the power to stop a creative outlet, and I sincerely hope that everyone gets a chance to show their creativity. Power-plays and games should be kept reserved for sports, not in life. By the way I’m from UK Nurse my profession, after watching 5 times the Untamed drama i was really touched with there extraordinary performance on how they gave life to the story i even encouraged my colleagues to watch after busy work. The Untamed actor Xiao Zhan turns 30 with sober reflections

BEIJING - On his 30th birthday, Chinese idol Xiao Zhan took the opportunity to reflect on his responsibilities as a celebrity.

At the stroke of midnight on Tuesday (Oct 5), the singer-actor posted an introspective message in Chinese on Weibo: "As the saying goes, one has to be established at the age of 30.

"What does it mean? It means that I have to show responsibility externally and show capability internally."

The member of boy band X Nine said he was fortunate to be in the public eye and would shoulder this responsibility by being self-disciplined and spreading positive energy through his influence.

Xiao, whose popularity rocketed after he starred in the fantasy drama The Untamed (2019), added: "An actor should play a role well and strive to be recognised by viewers. I still have a lot to learn and only by practising my skills and continuing to improve myself can I live up to the word 'actor'."

He said turning 30 is only the end of the first 300m in the marathon of life and the beginning of a later stretch.

"Let's continue to move forward now that the goal is clear," he said.

His post comes on the back of China's recent crackdown on the entertainment industry, as it issued guidelines calling for a boycott of those with "incorrect" politics or morals, as well as so-called "sissy idols" and "idol selection shows", among other things.

Xiao, who is known for his androgynous good looks, surprised fans in a Mid-Autumn Festival post on Sept 21, in which he looked studious, bespectacled and slightly unshaven, with his hair ungelled.

In late February, with COVID-19 deaths skyrocketing in China and much of the country on lockdown, the last thing correspondent Emily Feng expected to see dominating the internet was a scandal involving a boy band celebrity and queer fan fiction. But as she dug into the story, she discovered that this fan war had lasting consequences for how the internet in China is regulated and censored.

Xiao Zhan is a super idol whose star had been rising until a piece of erotic fan fiction about him sparked an online feud between an army of admirers and the writers on a popular fan fiction platform called AO3. These "poison fans" reported the offending story to the Chinese government, which in turn blocked the whole site. In response, AO3 devotees called for a boycott of all Xiao Zhan-endorsed products.

The scandal not only upended a pop star's career, but also prompted soul-searching across China about a social media-fueled resurgence of Chinese "reporting culture." Some recalled a history of abuses in which people settled grudges by reporting their personal enemies as "anti-revolutionaries" to the government. Was a similar thing now happening online? While filming “The Untamed,” Xiao Zhan dance, being a diligent and regretful person, took on additional projects outside of the show. These included short-format television game shows and music programs.

Consequently, there were many behind-the-scenes scenes in “The Untamed” that showed the actor learning lines or dance routines for those other shows. L’Oréal, a major global brand, has signed a partnership with Xiao Zhan this year. In their announcement post about the actor’s new role, the French brand emphasized that Xiao Zhan and L’Oréal are indeed a “perfect match”.

1. He is an only child

Xiao Zhan was born as an only child on 5 October 1991 in Chongqing, China. Despite hitting his 30s, fans can’t help but notice that he still looks refreshingly youthful with every year to come.

2. Originally debuted as a singer in a Chinese boy band called X Nine

Xiao Zhan’s breakthrough in the Chinese entertainment industry came when he auditioned for a survival programme known as X-FIRE. After competing among 16 contestants, the Chinese boy group X NINE debuted with 8 members in 2016. 

The programme was formed by EE Media, Tencent Video and SM Entertainment, aka the company that debuted many famous K-pop groups such as SHINee, EXO and Girls Generation.
