Journal of the World Federation of Associations of Teacher Education

Rick A . Breault

Starting from the premise that teachers need to become stronger advocates and activists for the children they teach, this study considered the extent to which teacher education programs might encourage or hinder an activist disposition in preservice teachers. The research component of the paper involved a literature review of 72 articles, reports and dissertations that had preservice teacher dispositions as their focus. The dispositions described in each source were analyzed to determine their potential for nurturing or hindering advocacy and activism in preservice teachers. While a definitive answer was difficult because of limited information as to how dispositions were nurtured and what was taking place in coursework, the notion of activist teaching was nearly absent in the articles reviewed and, in fact, a number of the dispositions had the potential to conflict with each other and encourage compliance over activism. The paper also recommends that is activism and advocacy is to be nurtured it should be based on the rights of children as described in the United Nation Declaration for the Rights of the Child. It is argued that those rights would form a stronger moral foundation for action than the current conceptions of social justice and equity.

Tangonan (2017), the technology-oriented curriculum aims to develop a program for foreign language speaking students of Filipino. Its objective is to look into their needs; enumerate the competencies that shall be developed by the curriculum; and evaluate the effectiveness of the curriculum of Special Filipino Class (SFC) to the students. Teachers and students of SFC in Saint Pedro Poveda College were used in the Focused Group Discussion (FGD) in order to identify topics to be developed in the curriculum while three experts in the field of curriculum and language evaluated the created course. Results of the evaluation revealed that the foreign students who are studying the Filipino language give much importance in sharing their ideas and understanding to people around them, thus making them more practical in choosing the lessons and activities to do. On the other hand, the second language teachers focus on the teaching of Filipino values and culture embedded in their lessons. With these results, the infusion of technology was made to the strategies in teaching Filipino language to create meaningful activities for the students that will cultivate not

Contemporary Issues in Technology and Teacher Education

This article describes a recent collective case study of English language arts methods students at a large university in the southwestern United States who created literacy-based welcome videos addressed to future students. By crafting "This is my Story" videos, preservice teachers practiced technology implementation with traditionally print-based approaches, integrating multimodal media text creation and biographical narration. Digital autobiographies support preservice teachers' ability to interrogate their own contexts in ways that prepare them to facilitate diverse literacy communities in which all voices have value. Findings suggest that purposeful applications of technology can help English teacher candidates cultivate literacy identities and hone digital literacies as part of their teacher preparation.

The theme of the 2018 Oceania Comparative and International Society (OCIES) conference held at Victoria University of Wellington, in Wellington, New Zealand aimed to explore, celebrate, and deepen Oceanic relationalities. This special issue of the International Education Journal: Comparative Perspectives responds to this call for scholarship to examine how Comparative and International Education (CIE) can be repositioned around the notion of relationality to contribute theoretically, practically, and spiritually to education at global, regional, national, and community levels. In this Special Edition, we celebrate the work of seven new and emerging researchers from OCIES. This paper introduces us as a community of scholars, connected geographically by sea, yet it is our shared commitment to relationality that has enabled us to further the scholarship of CIE within our region.

Improving students’ critical thinking skills

Literacy is not limited to simply being able to read and write. For students to show academic progress, they also need to display a solid comprehension of information, proficiency in the subject, and critical thinking skills.

Studies show that students in the Philippines have struggled with reading comprehension, and do not process written information adequately. The effects of this are evident in society through the many young people who share information on social media without processing or verifying it—a practice that leads to the spread of misinformation.

There is a critical need to deepen students’ literacy and enable them to analyze and scrutinize information objectively. Educational institutions need to build students’ ability to determine the reliability of sources to ensure the integrity of academic research, and review their writing before submission. Leveraging technology solutions can aid in honing and improving Filipino students’ collective critical thinking skills.

Although 97.95 percent of the Philippines is literate, this statistic masks serious deficiencies in reading comprehension skills, as the country has not evolved over the last few decades to meet the information processing requirements of the modern world. This gap in critical literacy contributes to troubling sociopolitical trends today, including the rapid spread of misinformation via social media platforms.

To reverse this trend, education institutions must shift toward instruction that empowers students to analyze, read between the lines, and identify credible sources for their own work.

A recent International Literacy Association survey of educators from 65 countries, including the Philippines, found teachers believe that, “determining effective instructional strategies for struggling readers” and “teaching critical literacy skills and how to analyze source material and authorial intent” are the top ways to improve literacy outcomes. Students who build their reading comprehension and critical literacy skills in the classroom have a stronger foundation for upholding academic integrity in their work—and becoming citizens with the ability to evaluate the reliability of news sources. Achieving this academic integrity requires a mutual commitment to honesty, trust, fairness, respect, responsibility, and courage between educators and students.

Educators also need to reinforce the importance of conducting checks of their own work to build a culture of academic integrity in their classrooms.

The first is fact-checking the sources cited in research papers by finding a reliable source that disagrees with the opinion presented in the paper. While the citations may be correct, it is still important for students to fact-check to uncover any weak sources and catch debatable or false information. Spelling and grammar are also important for students to habitually check before submitting papers. While basic word processors and other technologies check for errors, they are not replacements for human analysis and getting another set of eyes to catch mistakes.

Students also need to learn to check the clarity of their writing to ensure that ideas are laid out as simply as possible. The more clearly they can present information, the lower the chance of the information being misconstrued. Finally, teaching students to check papers for plagiarism and ensure that information is not copied from sources before submitting is crucial. There are a number of ways to support this, including the “cleanroom writing” technique which teaches students to clearly separate the writing process from their readings of other people’s work. This will help students be 100-percent sure that carefully cited sources are not copied.

Teaching students these simple steps to check papers before submission can go a long way in reinforcing academic integrity in classrooms. To improve critical literacy in the Philippines, students also need to develop a foundation that will help them analyze online sources and news information confidently. The right mix of technology tools can help both educators and students ensure academic integrity in the classroom, and facilitate deeper reading comprehension among students.

Thinking Pinoy: 10 Traits of Critical Thinking Filipinos

Do you want to be a thinking pinoy? I do. And I hope we can encourage more Filipinos to become thinking Pinoys too. For the past years, we have elected corrupt leaders because most of us were misinformed. And I can say that with certainty because I saw the lies.

I feel that we will be of a disservice to our country if we allow the efficient use of social media and other platforms for propaganda to shape us. They cannot fool us. But we live in a democracy where the vote of the uninformed and the fanatics are more than enough to drown our voices and defeat our choices.

Filipinos yearn for clarity amidst a sea of misinformation and propaganda.

We’ve seen it, haven’t we?

Corrupt politicians sweeping the polls because of charm rather than capability. It’s not entirely our fault, though. The allure of beautifully crafted words and promises of a better tomorrow can be too hard to resist.

Who does not want to get rid of drugs ? Who does not want unity? Who does not want a peaceful and orderly country?

Filipinos want these changes so bad that many of us believe politicians who sell these ideas, though all their lives they’ve been doing the opposite of what they say. They’re promises were made to get votes.

But it’s high time we equip ourselves better, rise above the chaos, and build an informed and critical society.

By embodying the spirit of a thinking Pinoy. What exactly does it mean to be one?

Let’s dig in.

Be A Thinking Pinoy

These days, people find it difficult to talk about being “ matino and mahusay ” because others are quick to say that you are self-righteous. Being vulgar and based are held as being authentic. This does not only happen in the Philippines. I am not sure if it is everywhere, but I know it is widespread.

Social media are used by influencers who get paid for telling outright lies. Unfortunately, they have the ability to tell lies again and again and they don’t get penalized when get caught.

Recently, a blogger won a data privacy case against an influencer. The court ordered the culprit to pay 350,000 pesos. That’s peanuts to what he earns. I doubt it will teach him, and others like him, a lesson.

Many of these influencers were caught making up stories. Once, I saw an influencer admitted in a senate hearing that people like her cannot be expected to tell the truth because they are not journalists. I scratched my head because she has millions of followers.

I choose to stay away from politics because I don’t want to spend time fact-checking propagandists.

Instead, I write more on how to become a good citizen. Becoming a thinking pinoy is one way.

Critical thinking helps Filipinos make informed decisions. It lets them understand complex ideas and solve problems. It helps in school, work, and everyday life. It makes society better because people question, learn, and innovate.

Critical thinking can guide Filipinos in choosing their leaders. It helps them analyze candidates’ promises, backgrounds, and performance. They can see past propaganda or false claims. It leads to voting for leaders who truly serve the country’s interests.

A thinking Pinoy values honesty and competence. They know that plunderers and incompetent leaders harm the country. They stop progress and hurt the people’s well-being. So, a thinking Pinoy supports leaders who are ethical, capable, and genuinely care for the Philippines.

To encourage Filipinos to be good citizens, we can: Educate: Teach the importance of civic duties like voting and obeying laws. Lead by example: Show honesty, respect, and responsibility in our actions. Promote community involvement: Encourage volunteering and helping neighbors. Foster critical thinking: Help people question, learn, and make good choices. Celebrate good citizenship: Recognize and honor those who contribute positively to society.
