A&E Biography WWE Legends: the NWO: Nothing ‘New’

Posted by Jon Waldman | Feb 19, 2023

A&E Biography WWE Legends: the NWO: Nothing ‘New’

There’s an inherent reality about the New World Order story – there’s nothing new about it.

25 or so years after the nWo “revolutionized” North American sports entertainment, there’s little that anyone can say that is truly newsworthy, or at least as far as I knew going into the A&E Biography: WWE Legends season kickoff ep.

If there’s something revealed in the broadcast that I truly did not know about, that would be my prompt for giving the documentary a high rating and label it as a must watch on demand. Otherwise, you’re not going to get much of a thumbs up from me here. There’s your warning. Let’s see how it goes.

We get the usual rundown of how the bad guys were the real heroes in the eyes of the fans as we zero in on Eric Bischoff and how he gained standing in WCW. Bisch reveals that WCW was close to being cut off by Ted Turner because of how crappy the company was as a drawing card. I’ll give a point for that one.

So Bischoff recruits Hulk Hogan and everything starts looking rosier. Hogan was ready to move on from WWE, supposedly, but this is Hogan saying it so take that with a grain of salt and take away the point from before.

Bischoff talks about the early relationship with NJPW before we transition to Scott Hall from a 2014 interview talking about leaving WWE after a contract squabble and Kevin Nash leaving, then we get the tired footage of the Curtain Call. Take away another point for that (and yes, I’ll let you guys keep track of the points).

Oh, and another lost point for no discussion about how an NJPW angle inspired the nWo in the firstplace.

We go into Hall’s Canadian tuxedo-wearing disturbance to kick off the “invasion”. Hogan comments how good it was, without any context of why he was on the sidelines in the first place.

Nash’s debut is shown next with his misuse of grammar terms. Marc Riamandi, who has been interviewed a couple times already in the show, is finally on screen with a credit of being the author of an upcoming book on the nWo. Give a point for that one, with an NHL-style trade clause that if the book doesn’t reveal anything new, the point can be taken away.

Hall and Nash have their various annoying spots in the crowd, including a spot where they come to ringside brandishing baseball bats, which apparently they were forewarned against. Cops have their hands ready to grab their guns, because apparently no one told them wrestling is scripted. Give a point for this factoid.

We move out of sequence and flashback to Hogan’s act getting tired and the Hulkster taking a hiatus from WCW to film etc. Then we go back to Bischoff talking about trying to get Hogan to switch to a heel with the nWo, and Hulk’s reluctance. Bischoff does note that Sting was going to be the original third man. I had heard Luger at one point, but Sting was bandied about too. So let’s give them half a point here.

Talk is next about how Hogan went to the 11th hour as Bash at the Beach ’96 starts. Hogan then appears and does what he did. Bischoff talks about second-guessing his decision. Bischoff talks about coining the term nWo while Hogan talks about turning his back on the kids. Take away a point for Hogan.

Bischoff then talks about having to rush to plan merch and logos. and how Disney’s team created the look. That I didn’t know. One point. We get a reel then of the original three and the 4 Life catchphrase.

We then get Syxx’s introduction into the nWo, again out of sequence since, well, he was the sixth member, not the fourth. Point lost. Hogan gaining the WCW Championship.

We then get The Giant joining the nWo and how “anyone” could be joining the new crew. Truer words have never been spoken…

BTW, they gloss over DiBiase and Virgil/Vincent joining and head straight to Bischoff joining. I guess Ted wasn’t available for an interview for the show.

Bischoff talks about how his “firing” of Randy Anderson struck a chord with viewers who thought it was real. I’ll give a half point here because Bisch tells the story in a full way, more than I’d ever heard.

We get more talk about the anti-hero nature of the nWo and how it affected true babyfaces, and how they in turn had to change their look and feel, including Sting, and how Hall helped change Sting’s look.

We move next to merch and mainstream, including Dennis Rodman joining the nWo. Rodman isn’t interviewed by the way. We get the run-in with Jay Leno as well.

The expansion of the nWo is glossed over, including Buff Bagwell shown as part of the group but no talk about the move to add members like him, Scott Norton or others. Minus one.

We fast forward to Starrcade ’97 and the Sting/Hogan Match for the gold. Bischoff, Sting, Hogan and Nash talk about Hulk politicking and a controversial end to the match, with Nick Patrick botching the fast count. Bischoff is quick not to lay blame on Patrick because of the last minute change. The new change is shown with various personalities either remembering or not remembering what happened. Give them credit – this was well presented. Give them a point.

We go quickly into the Wolfpac split-off, ignoring more history like Syxx’s firing. Lost point there. Bischoff talk about how his budget being slashed and how everything starts to spiral. We speed to the Fingerpoke of Doom and we’re now going at lightning speed. Points lost.

Hogan turns on Bischoff in his commentary while the video shows Hogan’s 2000 Presidential campaign announcement. Let’s take away a couple points for the childishness.

We then ultra-speed up to the AOL/Time Warner merger. Huh? Minus… oh forget it.

Next up is Vince McMahon buying WCW… the hell? Hogan talks about how “we would’ve had a chance” if it weren’t for the merger, cleanly glossing over his leaving WCW after the Vince Russo shoot moment. This is spiraling.

All the sudden the nWo is appearing in WWE, completely skipping the atrocious nWo 2000 silver-and-black era (which is actually more interesting than anyone gives it credit for) and the biggest killer of WCW – the superfluation of nWo members, including the B Team (no, not Axel and Dallas). Hogan thinks more could have been done in WWE, but we quickly go to the angle with The Rock, and how Hogan is cheered despite doing everything he could to be a heel. This part I can totally get. Strong stuff, would’ve been good to have The Rock comment here. 1/2 point (like it matters at this point). Hogan becomes a total face, and as he says, that’s the end of the nWo.

We skip past HBK returning as part of the nWo and the true end of the group, and go to Scott Hall passing. An emotional Kevin Nash is shown, in an incredible moment that needs to be clipped.

Bischoff talks about going to a comic con and meeting a fan who had a crappy life growing up and had the only true father-daughter time was watching Nitro with her dad. This is another spot that needs to be clipped and shown far and wide.

We close with the nWo highlight reel and induction into the WWE Hall of Fame.

Okay. Let me say this. The production on the doc was great, but that’s an A&E standard. The story started okay and there were a couple cool tidbits, but there’s way too much history that’s overlooked. I’d love to have heard Lex Luger talk about the Wolfpac, for example, or had perspective from Stevie Ray as one of the “also-rans” in the grand nWo scheme. Yes, there’s only two hours (less commercial time), but there’s plenty that was choppable here.

There are much better recounts of the New World Order story. I’m a big fan of the WWE Legends series as part of Biography, but this one just fell flat aside from the two moments at the end and a couple cool lesser-known factoids.

Video: A&E “Biography: WWE Legends” returns this Sunday featuring the NWO

' src=

A&E has released a sneak peek at this Sunday’s return of “Biography: WWE Legends”, with an all new season that will feature the NWO.

You can watch the sneak peek below, along with a description from A&E.

Biography: WWE Legends” kicks off a new season featuring NWO on 2/19. When Hulk Hogan joined Scott Hall and Kevin Nash to form a group of villains called the “New World Order”, the world of sports and entertainment was changed forever. The NWO became the most influential faction in the history of sports entertainment. For the first time ever, fans were cheering for the bad guys, and it spilled over into pop culture. The off the cuff, unscripted, reality – based brand of storytelling revolutionized sports entertainment and TV in general. The nWo were the key figures in the infamous “Monday Night War” that nearly put the WWE out of business.

Sean ‘X-Pac’ Waltman on the NWO: ‘I’m Happy to Still Be Alive and Be Part of It’

  • Author: Justin Barrasso

A new season of Biography: WWE Legends will debut Sunday, beginning with an episode exploring one of wrestling’s most successful story lines: the New World Order.

The NWO was formed long before that famed night at Bash at the Beach in July 1996 when Hulk Hogan joined forces with Kevin Nash and Scott Hall . The foundation for the industry-changing group was laid on backroads, diners and highways across the United States in car rides that featured Nash, Hall and Sean Waltman during their time together in the World Wrestling Federation.

“We were a unit,” says Waltman, who joined the iconic group as its sixth member in September 1996. “The NWO wasn’t blind faith in one another. We knew each other very well. It was all based off our friendship.”

Speaking with Sports Illustrated , Waltman discussed a myriad of NWO-related topics, including the elements that made Hall and Nash so distinct and special, as well as the influence they had on his career.

Sports Illustrated: Kevin Nash and Scott Hall bestowed so much trust and faith upon you. To me, so much the NWO is a story of brotherhood.

Sean Waltman: Justin, you’ve been with us in person and you’ve seen how we work. Scott and Kevin were the heart and soul. It doesn’t work without Hulk, obviously, not to the level that it did, but Scott and Kevin were so different. They were the heart and soul of our unit, too. We’d spent so much time together leading up to that point when we were all together in the NWO. The NWO still lasts because it was real. And it was based off our friendship, which was all real.

SI: The NWO took place right as the industry was changing to a more reality-based product. That differed greatly from the characters you all played—and, tremendously well—in the WWF as the 1-2-3 Kid, Razor Ramon and Diesel. You were given the chance to make it real and bring an entirely different edge to WCW.

SW: That was the fuel I used. We could be real. We wanted so badly that opportunity to be as real as we could be. We got that in WCW. It was wild there. There was no Vince McMahon telling you what you could do. There weren’t those rules.

When we ran the Steiners off the road, remember that? That was so real people were complaining and scared and calling the police. There was a realness in everything we did, right up until the time it was the red-and-black versus the white-and-black. Then it wasn’t real. In no situation in real life would you ever put Kevin against Scott or Scott against Kevin. It wasn’t going to happen. I think people knew that.

SI: What made Kevin and Scott’s friendship so unique?

SW: It’s not like they’d never disagree. But they were brothers. No, that’s not right. They were stronger than brothers. I’ve never seen a friendship like that. They always, always looked out for one another. Even if they’d argue, you’d never see a crack between them. I get emotional thinking about it. Their friendship, it was epic.

SI: Scott Hall will never get the credit he deserves. Scott changed the way wrestling operated inside and out of it—and saw the business in ways no one else could.

SW: In my career, my journey, the most brilliant mind I’ve ever met in wrestling was Scott Hall. His mindset, his attitude about his job, the way he could see things in a different light, it was incredible. Back when I was the 1-2-3 Kid and I beat Razor Ramon on Monday Night Raw [in 1993], I remember The Godfather, who I think had just finished up as Papa Shango, said to Scott after the match, “Did you just fail a drug test?” He wasn’t alone in thinking that. People thought Scott was being punished. But Scott was excited by it. He was making somebody. He made me that night. That was the most important night in my career. None of the great stuff that happened after that would have happened if not for that. He was just real unselfish, and he did things like that. I remember when he put Chris Jericho over on live television [on Nitro in November ’97].

SI: Incredibly, he did the same for a young Hiroshi Tanahashi, too, in Japan in 2001 .

SW: That was Scott. He had a vision unlike anybody else.

SI: It’s interesting that two of the wrestling’s most brilliant minds, Scott Hall and Bret Hart, often shared such contrasting views on the business. But they both knew how to make magic on-screen.

SW: They’re two of my favorite people, ever, on this planet. I love them both.

SI: The Kliq, which you, Hall and Nash were all part of, is known for its strong inclination to party. But I’m still drawn to the story of affinity between you, that brotherhood.

SW: People know there were drugs. I remember specifically waking up, not knowing how I got there, and Kev was sitting there, looking over me, not getting any sleep to watch over me and make sure I was safe. You need to love somebody to do that. We loved one another. We were all in with each other.

SI: Years ago, I did a story at Dallas Page’s new yoga studio in Georgia. Scott Hall came for an interview, and I remember him complaining that it was too early in the morning to talk. But once we hit record, Scott came alive. He is one of the greatest performers of all time, regardless of the fact he was never world champion. If he were still alive, this A&E special would have brought the best out of him.

SW: When the red light came on, he was on a different level. Kev saw him after this, but the last time I saw Scott, it was in Stockton, Calif., at a Comic-Con type of thing. Scott was in rough shape, as bad of shape as I’d ever seen him. So bad that I was afraid that would be the last time I’d ever see him, which ended up being the case. But we were doing a question-and-answer panel. As soon as someone asked Scott a question, it triggered something in his brain. Scott just lit up. Even as sad I was about seeing him in that shape, it was an amazing moment to see him like that again. He was still here.

SI: When you think back on the NWO, what do you remember most?

SW: When I got to WCW, I’d had some success as 1-2-3 Kid. But the notoriety I got in the NWO blew anything else I’d done completely out of the water. It reached a whole other level. When you’re watching Raw or SmackDown now, you still see NWO T-shirts. What we built still stands. I hope people enjoy the A&E special, and I’m happy to still be alive and be part of it.

A&E's 'Biography: WWE Legends' never pins down the truth about professional wrestling

Image: \"Stone Cold\" Steve Austin

Understanding American pro wrestling has always been a little bit like Kremlinology: Sometimes the loudest things are those unspoken. True fans understand this and have learned to read between the lines — to notice which people no longer appear in photos or who gets more interview time — to determine how the people backstage are altering the fates of those in front of the cameras.

But for the more casual viewers of wrestling, the A&E's "Biography" series take on WWE legends might require a bit more of a cheat sheet.

After all, WWE wrestles very little with itself and doesn't want to.

Despite award-winning producers and directors signing up for the "Biography: WWE Legends" series — Joe Lavine, George Roy, Billy Corben and Alfred Spellman, all veterans of ESPN's "30 for 30" and HBO's sports documentaries, among others — each profile feels like a more sophisticated version of WWE's own bio packages. (True fans might suspect this is because ring footage was augmented with interviews and "unprecedented access" to the WWE archive.) Each follows a similar narrative: An oddball follows a passion, gets well beaten and poorly paid, finally makes money, is consumed by the life, overcomes trauma and then his body commences total orthopedic collapse.

The filmmakers, then, are left to slip the truth past all the unprecedented access they got.

Over each of the next eight Sundays, "Biography" will roll out two-hour episodes, each dedicated to a different WWE Superstar: "Stone Cold" Steve Austin, "Rowdy" Roddy Piper, "Macho Man" Randy Savage, Booker T, Shawn Michaels, Mick Foley, Ultimate Warrior and Bret "the Hitman" Hart.

Like wrestling itself, the series works on a couple of levels. For those still clinging to the myth that it's all fake, the profiles illuminate a serious craft designed to look deceptively simple and humanizes people often dismissed as cartoons. After all, even WWE talking heads in the series refer to wrestling's everyday demands as "physical abuse." But, for the most hardcore fans, it's a rich nostalgia trip with enough archival treats to sugarcoat even the worst self-congratulatory aspects of the WWE.

a&e wwe biography nwo

Opinion Wrestlemania wasn't just a good promo for Bad Bunny. It was also great for the WWE.

WWE has never been able to get out of the way of its own hagiography; it prefers to hope the audience ignores the contradictions. It's the greatest company in wrestling, yet it produced such abysmal programming in the 1990s that it had to be dragged to its own rescue by the same performers it structurally undervalued when it wasn't bungling their opportunities or pushing them aside for an evil dentist, a parody of Ted Turner or a succession of clowns.

WWE wrestles very little with itself and doesn't want to.

What the smart fan knows — and what each "Biography" in the series taken together shows — is that what trauma each and every one of the people had to overcome wasn't some dark streak of character. What happened to all these men was professional wrestling.

Long before Shawn Michaels popped his first oxycodone or Macho Man's dad first shot him up with Deca-Durabolin, someone decided to make the business they're in as relentless as possible in its disregard for a person's ability to remain whole.

a&e wwe biography nwo

Opinion Dwayne Johnson's 'Fighting with My Family' is a wrestling story worth watching

It is a testament both to Bret the Hitman Hart's status in the wrestling world (and WWE's inability to mask just how totally it strip-mines human beings) that Roddy Piper's "Biography" features the Hitman commenting flatly on injury: "If you can't do it, they'd replace you a few minutes later with somebody else. You learned to be your own doctors. That's kind of the sad thing, is you're your own doctor."

WWE's stab at operatic biographical branding can't quite drown out its tragic leitmotifs.

The Corben- and Spellman-produced "Biography" of Randy Savage comes closest to overtly impeaching that WWE-sanctioned narrative, by allowing WWE performer and Chairman Vince McMahon to essentially skewer himself. McMahon's self-satisfaction at mentioning how Savage had to pay out of pocket for his own costumes quietly underlines the kind of conditions that led the WWE's "independent contractors" to consider eating Vicodin like Altoids as a cost-effective alternative to taking a day off to pay for a doctor to tell them to take even more days off.

It's not all gloom, of course. Mick Foley, who is also profiled, not only penned a wonderful memoir in 2000 — " Have A Nice Day: A Tale of Blood and Sweatsocks " — but went on to become a fundraiser and spokesperson for the sexual abuse survivors charity RAINN. He also spent the peak of his career in the league being between something (his words) "a human pincushion" and (a peer's words) "a human Muppet."

a&e wwe biography nwo

Opinion The WWE says its had a feminist awakening. The truth is more complicated.

And it is impossible to watch the "Biography" of Booker T for any significant length of time without smiling because Booker T radiates joy.

But these stories inspire because they are ultimately the successes, the exceptions and the things that WWE chooses to remember. It chooses to remember that Booker T, an African American wrestler, overcame the racism of the industry to become a Grand Slam champion and two-time Hall of Fame inductee — without remembering that part of the racism he had to overcome were ideas McMahon and company trotted out for decade upon decade.

What happened to all these men was professional wrestling.

WWE's stab at operatic biographical branding can't quite drown out the tragic leitmotifs raised by revisiting this same formula: Men who succeeded by being consumed by their jobs, in conditions where their business never stopped feeding on them.

Another example of the tragedy comes just 15 minutes into the first "Biography," that of WWE legend Stone Cold Steve Austin, and it's haunting for older fans. In it, "Stunning" Steve Austin, before he was Stone Cold and then a member of the Hollywood Blonds, stands on the top of the cage, slashes his thumb across his throat in a gesture made famous by the wrestler "Canadian Crippler" Chris Benoit, and then launches into a frog splash, the high-flying finisher made famous by Eddie Guerrero.

a&e wwe biography nwo

Opinion WWE's men-only Saudi Arabian wrestling special is obviously a terrible idea

All three men were born within three years of one another; all three went on to become World Champions. At age 56, Austin is the only one who isn't dead. Guerrero died of heart failure at 38 , thought to have been exacerbated by steroid use. Benoit killed himself at age 40 after first killing his wife and 7-year-old son and was later found to have advanced dementia from chronic concussions.

As "Big Sexy" Kevin Nash, who spoke to "Biography" about the death of Randy Savage — who died of a heart attack at 58 , which he suffered while driving — said, "There are so many of these guys who were so tormented, then you hear that they died — it's like the life of a kamikaze pilot."

a&e wwe biography nwo

Opinion We want to hear what you THINK. Please submit a letter to the editor.

As WWE's talking heads reiterate, wrestling's greatest characters augment something real about the performer himself. And the combination of personalities taken to an extreme and bodies in extremis create the sport's blend of reality and opera, of sacrifice and betrayal.

When Shawn Michaels mouths "I love you" before delivering the sweet chin music kick that ends his heroes' career, what brings tears to your eyes should be the agony of seeing a soul you've known for 20 years broken by its own love and ambition. What WWE hopes is that it's just pretty enough you don't think too hard about everything else broken along the way.
