Summer programsâand other extracurricular activitiesâcan help set you apart, particularly at highly selective schools. CollegeVineâs free admissions calculator can tell you how colleges value your extracurricular activities and uses factors like grades and test scores (along with extracurriculars) to estimate your odds of acceptance at hundreds of schools across the country. It even provides insight into how you can improve your profile!
Though summer break provides you with the most time to explore your passions, it is not the only time. Colleges want to see that you are curious about the world around you and are constantly seeking new learning opportunities.Â
Instead of participating in a program, you could create your own. Writing a book or mobilizing a team to solve an issue in your local community are examples of independent efforts that look impressive to colleges.Â
You can show further initiative by taking on internships and paying jobs. Both demonstrate initiative, a career direction, and key life skills like time management and responsibility. Since most internships are reserved for college students and graduates, it can be a challenge to find opportunities for high school students. To help with the search, here is a list of summer internships for high school students. Looking for more summer programs? Take a look at this list of virtual opportunities for high school students.

What You'll Learn
During Interlochen's writing camp , youâll focus intensively on two genres of creative writing. Genre workshops include:

Youâll also experience the natural beauty of Northern Michigan via our Environmental Explorations class, attend readings by award-winning faculty and visiting authors, and learn to craft your work for publication and performance. Each session culminates in a camp anthology and student reading.

After enrolling, students rank the four genres in order of preference. Weâll do our best to accommodate the top two choices, however, space is limited. We encourage students to submit preferences as soon as possible!

Weâve put together a five-question, yes-or-no response quiz to help you decide if summer writing programs support your interests and goals. Just read the questions below and respond with âyesâ or âno.â
- Is your English class the most exciting part of your school day?
- Do you spend free time reading and writing for fun?
- Are you looking for new challenges and experiences as a writer?
- Are you willing to share your writing with others, including peers youâve just met and writing professionals and experts?
- Are you highly motivated to pursue your interests outside of school and even during your summer vacation?
If you responded with âyesâ to three or more of the questions above, you might consider applying to a summer writing program for high school students!
At the end of the day, you want your summer activities to support your interests and boost your college applications . If youâre aiming for a future career as a writer or just want to hone your writing hobby, a summer writing program may be the perfect fit for you.
3 Tips To Impress Colleges With Your Summer Writing Program
Summer writing programs for high school students look great to college admissions teams . But what are the best ways to showcase your writing experience on your applications?
Weâll show you how to impress colleges with your summer writing programâjust check out the tips below !
Tip 1: Work It Into Your College Essays
You want your college essays to tell a vivid story about your interests . Your experiences in a summer writing program provide a great springboard for illustrating your interests and passions on your college applications!
Colleges want to accept students who are creative, courageous, and motivated to pursue their dreams. Writing about how you stretched and grew during your summer writing program will show colleges that youâre up for a challengeâŠand that you wonât give up, no matter how many revisions your draft needs.
Tip 2: Connect It to Your Major
If youâre already certain you want to major in a writing-related field in college, your summer writing program will be especially helpful. Many elite schools ask students to apply directly to their chosen major. So if youâre applying to an arts or humanities major, thereâs a good chance youâll have to submit a writing sample as part of your college application .
The good news is that most summer writing programs give you the chance to produce original writing and receive critiques from professional writers. By taking the writing you produce during your summer writing program and continuing to revise it, youâll have a top-notch writing sample to include with your application.
Tip 3: Ask a Program Instructor for a Recommendation
Creative writing summer programs for high school students give you the opportunity to connect with writing faculty at elite colleges and real-life writers, journalists, poets, and more. These professionals provide feedback on your writing during your summer programâŠwhich means theyâll have unique insights into your potential as a college student !
In fact, several summer writing programs offer students the chance to receive a college recommendation from program faculty . For instance, the New York Times Summer Academy says this about recommendations from program faculty:
As a pre-college program, [NYT] Summer Academy gives students the opportunity to get a glimpse of the college experience while also exploring possible topics of study. Typically, college admissions officers look favorably on students who continue to enhance their academic portfolio during the summer months. Students will also benefit from receiving a narrative evaluation from their instructor which can be included as part of their college applications.
If you build strong rapport with an instructor at your summer writing program, consider staying in touch and asking them to write you a letter of recommendation for your college applications. Having a recommendation from someone outside of your high school will show colleges that youâre already building real-world connections with people in your future career field .

100 Creative Writing Prompts for Middle & High School – 2024
April 15, 2024
Some high school students dream of writing for a living, perhaps pursuing an English major in college, or even attending a creative writing MFA program later on. For other students, creative writing can be useful for school assignments, in English and other subjects, and also for preparing their Common App essays . In a less goal-oriented sense, daily freewriting in a journal can be a healthy life practice for many high schoolers. Not sure where to start? Continue reading for 100 creative writing prompts for middle school and high school students. These middle/high school writing prompts offer inspiration for getting started with writing in a number of genres and styles.
Click here to view the 35 Best Colleges for Creative Writing .
What are Creative Writing Prompts?
Similar to how an academic essay prompt provides a jumping-off point for forming and organizing an argument, creative writing prompts are points of initiation for writing a story, poem, or creative essay. Prompts can be useful for writers of all ages, helping many to get past writerâs block and just start (often one of the most difficult parts of a writing process).
Writing prompts come in a variety of forms. Sometimes they are phrases used to begin sentences. Other times they are questions, more like academic essay prompts Writing prompts can also involve objects such as photographs, or activities such as walking. Below, you will find high school writing prompts that use memories, objects, senses (smell/taste/touch), abstract ideas , and even songs as jumping-off points for creative writing. These prompts can be used to write in a variety of forms, from short stories to creative essays, to poems.
How to use Creative Writing Prompts
Before we get started with the list, are a few tips when using creative writing prompts:
Experiment with different formats : Prose is great, but thereâs no need to limit yourself to full sentences, at least at first. A piece of creative writing can begin with a poem, or a dialogue, or even a list. You can always bring it back to prose later if needed.
Interpret the prompt broadly : The point of a creative writing prompt is not to answer it âcorrectlyâ or âprecisely.â You might begin with the prompt, but then your ideas could take you in a completely different direction. The words in the prompt also donât need to open your poem or essay, but could appear somewhere in the middle.
Switch up/pile up the prompts : Try using two or three prompts and combine them, or weave between them. Perhaps choose a main prompt, and a different âsub-prompt.â For example, your main prompt might be âwrite about being in transit from one place to another,â and within that prompt, you might use the prompt to âdescribe a physical sensation,â and/or one the dialogue prompts. This could be a fun way to find complexity as you write.
Creative Writing Prompts for Middle School & High School Students (Continued)
Write first, edit later : While youâre first getting started with a prompt, leave the typos and bad grammar. Obsessing over details can take away from your flow of thoughts. You will inevitably make many fixes when you go back through to edit.
Write consistently : It often becomes easier to write when itâs a practice , rather than a once-in-a-while kind of activity. For some, itâs useful to write daily. Others find time to write every few days, or every weekend. Sometimes, a word-count goal can help (100 words a day, 2,000 words a month, etc.). If you set a goal, make sure itâs realistic. Start small and build from there, rather than starting with an unachievable goal and quickly giving up.
100 Creative Writing Prompts for Middle School & High School Teens

This class is open to teens, from older 14-year-olds to 17-year olds, and is a hybrid class, meaning students can join online or in-person. Because The Muse wants our classes to be accessible to all, our youth classes are “pay what you can”, meaning you name the price you can afford, as high or low as it may be, no questions asked.
Come meet your muse at the Muse Writers Center!
Please note: This class or event is hybrid. Some attendees will be in-person and some will attend online. T here may be a limited number of in-person seats available. If you are participating online (using Zoom or a similar live platform), students or attendees should have a stable internet connection. Class participants: you should have a computer or device with a webcam and microphone; and your Zoom link will be automatically sent to you after you register. Information about the educational organization
Lyceum Student Day was celebrated in SFU
In 1811, on October 19, the Imperial Tsarskoye Selo Lyceum was opened, known as the school that brought up the great Russian poet and writer Alexander Sergeevich Pushkin. The day of its opening became the date of the celebration of the All-Russian Lyceum Student Day. This holiday, according to Anna Dmitrova , director of the SFU Lyceum , is the preservation of the traditions of lyceum education in Russia.
On this day, the SFedU Lyceum holds many interesting and socially significant events, one of which is a poster contest related to the life and work of the lyceum, in which not only students, but also teachers took part. All works are posted in the Lyceum building, as well as in the official VKontakte group, where you can vote for your favorite work. Also, the literary club prepared tasks on the history of the Tsarskoye Selo Lyceum for the holiday. nine0005
In addition, the election of the chairman of the council of students was held in the lyceum, already from the school bench the children have the opportunity to feel social responsibility to the team of students and teachers.
âI met the SFedU Lyceum last year at an open day, and I was very inspired by the atmosphere of this educational institution and the activities that constantly take place here. It’s great that teachers communicate with students on an equal footing, they are always ready to help and suggest, they are attentive to absolutely every student, and it’s also nice to see that each teacher simply burns with his subject and also tells it interestingly. Being the chairman of the council of students is not only an honor, it is also a great responsibility, and I hope that this will help me gain more self-confidence, develop my leadership qualities and, of course, benefit my Lyceum in the face of its students and teachersâ , – Ekaterina Marchenko shared .
Congratulations to Ekaterina on her election to a high post, as well as to all lyceum students on the holiday! We wish you excellent, interesting studies and high achievements!

An Overview of the IELTS
The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is designed to measure English proficiency for educational, vocational and immigration purposes. The IELTS measures an individual's ability to communicate in English across four areas of language: listening , reading , writing and speaking . The IELTS is administered jointly by the British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia and Cambridge English Language Assessment at over 1,100 test centres and 140 countries. These test centres supervise the local administration of the test and recruit, train and monitor IELTS examiners.
IELTS tests are available on 48 fixed dates each year, usually Saturdays and sometimes Thursdays, and may be offered up to four times a month at any test centre, including Elektrostal' depending on local needs. Go to IELTS test locations to find a test centre in or nearby Elektrostal' and to check for upcoming test dates at your test centre.
Test results are available online 13 days after your test date. You can either receive your Test Report Form by post or collect it from the Test Centre. You will normally only receive one copy of the Test Report Form, though you may ask for a second copy if you are applying to the UK or Canada for immigration purposes - be sure to specify this when you register for IELTS. You may ask for up to 5 copies of your Test Report Form to be sent directly to other organisations, such as universities.
There are no restrictions on re-sitting the IELTS. However, you would need to allow sufficient time to complete the registration procedures again and find a suitable test date.

Schar School Students Shine at National Political Science Conference
In this story, request schar school program information, learn more about the schar school.
In a notable showcase of academic excellence and scholarly engagement, students from the Schar School of Policy and Government made a significant impact at the Midwest Political Science Association (MPSA) Conference held in Chicago earlier this month. Despite its regional designation, the conference attracted some 5,000 attendees, solidifying its status as a premier national event in the field of political science.
Among the participants were two undergraduate and eight doctoral students from the Schar School, who distinguished themselves through their presentations of papers and posters. Their topics spanned a wide range of political science disciplines, reflecting the depth and diversity of research being conducted at the institution.
The presentations covered areas such as public perception of political events, the impact of Supreme Court rulings, the analysis of political disloyalty, community sponsorship in resettlement, and the intricate dynamics of global politics, among others.
The students' contributions were not only well-received but also highlighted their professional demeanor, analytical prowess, and engaging presentation skills. Their work garnered positive feedback throughout the weekend-long event, demonstrating the high caliber of mentorship and academic preparation they received at the Schar School.
In the days prior to the conference, student participants were invited to an afternoon workshop where several of their professors, experienced hands at presenting difficult material to a live audience, coached them during practice sessions. The fine-tuning paid off.
The Schar School representatives were âprofessional, poised, curious, and engaging,â said Associate Professor Jennifer N. Victor . â[They were] doing their best and getting good feedback on their work. I was proud to be their professor, mentor, and colleague at this important national political science conference.â
As the MPSA Conference continues to be a pivotal event for political science scholars nationwide, the participation of Schar School students not only enhances their own academic profiles but also elevates the school's reputation as a hub for innovative research and scholarly excellence.
