How to choose a public relations dissertation topic

Media and public relations are rich areas for research. Here are some suggestions for areas of study for students.

I deliver an annual lecture for media and public relations students at Newcastle University about contemporary areas of practice. It’s a start point to for dissertation topics.

An MA dissertation is a 12,000-word document in which you make a reasonable argument, answering a research question, problem, or hypothesis, based on evidence.  The best dissertations are original and niche. They make a genuine contribution to the professional body of knowledge in public relations. Avoid populist topics and go deep.

You are going to be spending several months investigating a topic. Make sure you find something that interests you. If it also aligns with your future career, then so much the better.

This year’s lecture was based on the final chapter from Exploring Public Relations and Management Communication. It covers societal issues impacting practice, media and innovative.

Public relations ethics: a cross-cultural analysis.

This two-part study employed 11 qualitative interviews, the Defining Issues Test (DIT) and a quantitative version of the five-factor TARES test to complete the first cross-cultural analysis of the ethical decision-making patterns of public relations practitioners. The DIT is an instrument based on Kohlberg’s (1969) moral development theory, the TARES test composed of 14 self-enforced, ethical consideration statements derived from the research of Baker and Martinson (2001). Results indicate no statistically significant difference in levels of moral development and ethical consideration between sampled practitioners in Australia, New Zealand and the United States (Lieber, 2003). This finding argues for a vocational uniformity in moral and ethical reasoning across these countries despite geographic, cultural, economic and ethnic disparities.

  • This dissertation examines how public relations was used by the Committee to Combat Racial Injustice (CCRI), the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), North Carolina Governor Luther Hodges, and the United States Information Agency (USIA) in regards to the 1958 kissing case. The kissing case occurred in Monroe, North Carolina when a group of children were playing, including two African American boys, age nine and eight, and a seven-year-old white girl. During the game, the nine-year-old boy and the girl exchanged a kiss. As a result, the police later arrested both boys and charged them with assaulting and molesting the girl. They were sentenced to a reformatory, with possible release for good behavior at age 21. The CCRI launched a public relations campaign to gain the boys’ freedom, and the NAACP implemented public relations tactics on the boys’ behalf. News of the kissing case spread overseas, drawing unwanted international attention to US racial problems at a time when the country was promoting worldwide democracy. In response, Gov. Hodges launched a public relations campaign to defend the actions of North Carolina authorities, and the USIA employed public relations tactics to manage the country’s reputation overseas. This dissertation analyzes the public relations campaigns of the CCRI and Gov. Hodges, focusing on public relations strategies and tactics, as well as public relations outputs and public relations outcomes. This dissertation also analyzes the public relations tactics implemented by the NAACP and USIA. In addition, it examines frames in the public relations material and frames in letters written by members of the public. Using racial formation theory as a foundation, this study also explores how race was reflected in the four groups’ public relations efforts. This dissertation adds to the scholarship on public relations history, illustrating public relations practice of the 1950s and providing an example of how public relations was used for social change, specifically how public relations was used to help African Americans gain civil rights.

LSU Public Relations Junior Awarded Prestigious Disney UNCF Corporate Scholarship

Hines, who originally enrolled at LSU as a pre-law major, discovered her passion for mass communication during her freshman year and, subsequently, switched her major to public relations. Reflecting on her journey at the Manship School, she credits internship coordinator Sadie Wilks and career coach Becky Sadler for helping her excel professionally.

Upon receiving news of the scholarship award, Hines expressed her gratitude, stating, "Receiving this scholarship award and job opportunity installed a level of indescribable confidence." She added, "The hard work is finally paying off."

As a recipient of the Disney UNCF Corporate Scholarship, Hines will receive a $5,000 renewable scholarship, along with access to professional development and early career opportunities.

Rice alumna wins prestigious merit-based fellowship for new americans, minjung kim is one of 30 2024 paul & daisy soros fellows.

Rice University alumna Minjung Kim is one of 30 recipients of the Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowships for New Americans , a merit-based graduate school program for immigrants and children of immigrants.

The highly selective award recognizes fellows “for accomplishments that show creativity, originality and initiative [and for] the potential to make meaningful contributions to the United States” in their field of study. Each awardee receives up to $90,000 in funding to support their graduate studies at institutions across the U.S. “This fellowship is a unique experience from the very start — not only did it require me to think critically about the impact I will have in my field, but it also made me contextualize my work within my experience as an immigrant,” Kim said. “The Soros fellowship validates the struggles of new Americans while simultaneously highlighting our accomplishments.

“My empathy and passion to build a more equitable society comes from transcending cultural and language barriers between my Korean heritage and being a new American. But more importantly, the profound understanding of the sacrifices that our families made gives us a unique lens through which we view society.”

Kim was born in Seoul, South Korea, and immigrated to the U.S. with her parents when she was 7. Her interest in music ⎯ she played the piano, gayageum (a traditional Korean instrument) and cello ⎯ had Kim spending a lot of time at the Shepherd School of Music growing up. “I fell in love with Rice as a young kid, so I was really excited to start my undergraduate journey in 2018,” Kim said. “I graduated in 2022 with a B.S. in chemical and biomolecular engineering and a B.A. in chemistry. What I appreciate the most about my Rice experience is that it helped me contextualize my studies beyond the lectures.”

Programs such as Moody Civic Immersion (formerly Urban Immersion/Civic Owlets) and Alternative Spring Breaks coordinated by Rice’s Center for Civic Leadership provided Kim with the opportunity to become civically engaged and aware of complex social issues and the multitude of factors at play shaping communities and individual histories alike.

“This understanding is crucial in order for science and engineering to have a real impact on the world,” Kim said. Kim used this insight to guide her involvement in outreach activities and service roles during her time at Rice, including as part of the Rice Emergency Medical Services, Owlchemy, Rice Catalyst, Peer Career Advisor, Design for America, O-week, the chemical and biomolecular engineering undergraduate board and more. Her research was likewise motivated by the desire to drive meaningful change. Her work with Matthew Jones focused on plasmonic nanorods , nanoparticles that can be deployed in applications in catalysis, optics and drug delivery. Another project carried out under the mentorship of Michael Wong explored ways to rid water of “forever chemicals.” While at Rice, Kim was also the recipient of a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship. “If I had to summarize what makes Rice so special, I would say it was the people that I met there,” Kim said, adding that Rice’s “culture of care” is manifest in the history of interactions and relationships she built during her undergraduate journey.

“During my junior year, my dad was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, and I could not have finished my degree without the financial support from Rice, the mentorship and guidance I received, and most importantly without my friends’ and professors’ understanding,” Kim said. “I wouldn’t be where I am without them — their kindness and patience were the silver lining that helped me navigate through difficult times, and they are my support system that still empowers me to this day. Rice truly has a special place in my heart.”

Kim is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in chemistry at Northwestern University, researching how interactions between metal-organic frameworks and metal nanoparticles can be used to decrease the energy requirement of direct air capture technologies. “In the future, I hope to become a professor with a research group focused on photocatalysis for environmental remediation,” Kim said. According to the fellowship program announcement , the 2024 Paul & Daisy Soros Fellows join a distinguished community of past recipients, including U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy, who is the country’s first surgeon general of Indian descent and helped lead the national response to Ebola, Zika and the coronavirus; lawyer Julissa Reynoso, who serves as the U.S. ambassador to Spain and Andorra; Damian Williams, who is the first Black U.S. attorney for the southern district of New York and serves as chair of the attorney general’s advisory committee; and composer Paola Prestini, who was named by NPR as one of the “Top 100 Composers in the World” and plays on major stages across the world. “I think this shared experience among all fellows is what makes this fellowship so empowering: It is a reflection of the new American experience and a representation of how immigrants are actively shaping society,” Kim said. “I am so excited to be a part of this community, and I can’t wait to meet everyone at the fall conference in October!”

'Zone In' has a credibility problem. Public relations experts must go.

High Street north of Greenlawn Avenue. The new rules will allow larger buildings with denser housing and have no parking requirements.

Get PR out of Zoned In

Well, the Dispatch has certainly raised some questions as to who and what to believe about “Zone In.”

Should citizens put their faith in city officials who make up quotes and phony mayoral opinion pieces about what terrible things will happen without it? Or should they consider critics who claim “Zone In” is nothing less than the unleashing of developers on neighborhoods to be flooded with cars left by residents of too tall apartment buildings with too little parking?

Our view: Zoning is not sexy until developers eye your neighborhood. Columbus must get it right now.

And why should taxpayers be paying a public relations firm $260,000 dollars (according to the Dispatch) to dream up sparkling visions of what “zone in” can do for you when city hall is packed with PR practitioners of its own who are, apparently, doing the same thing?

It all adds up to credibility. And “Zone In” clearly has a credibility problem. Solving it won’t be easy. But there can be no doubt about the first step — fire Paul Werth Associates.

Waiting period unconstitutional

I am thankful for news coverage of current litigation related to abortion after the passage of the Reproductive Freedom Amendment in November (USA Today,  "...But most restrictions remain on the books ," March 18).

As an Ohio family physician deeply involved in efforts for the amendment's passage, I write in support of the lawsuit filed by Ohio abortion providers against the medically unnecessary 24-hour waiting period.  

While I strive to provide compassionate care for all patients no matter their socioeconomic background, I have seen first hand that this Ohio law forces unreasonable barriers on my most vulnerable patients seeking abortion care: Patients who already struggle to access healthcare due to cost, transportation, language, and more, are forced by Ohio law to have two separate appointments for no medical reason at all.  

Not only is the waiting period discriminatory, it is also unconstitutional: It violates the Reproductive Freedom Amendment that was passed by a majority of Ohio voters five months ago, an amendment that was supported by the professional medical societies representing Ohio’s obstetrics and gynecology, family medicine, pediatric, and internal medicine doctors. 

This unconstitutional, medically unjustified waiting period must be removed.
