The Latin script of the English language appears less complicated for people to recognize and learn. Also, the pronunciation of the English language is not as complex as other languages like Korean or Turkish for example.

For example, a Korean person would find less difficulty in mastering the Japanese language in comparison to a German person. Globalization of the English Language: One of the Most Widely Used Languages in the World Expository Essay

English language is one of the most widely used languages in the whole world in spite of the fact that there are many languages. As much as all the other languages are important for various reasons, English language is important because it helps in uniting the whole world.

Consequently, most parts in the world today are united because a high percentage of people have learnt to communicate in English. The issues of languages have a long history. For instance, the story of the tower of Babel has many similarities with the current situation that is facing the English language. While the English language is becoming popular and important, other local languages are vanishing as the days go by.

Therefore, the issue of English becoming an international language and preservation of other languages has become the subject of discussion. With that background in mind, this paper focuses on English language, its importance, as well as the advantages and disadvantages of multiple languages compared to having one single language.

There are some applications on the English language and other languages that can be derived from reading the story of the Tower of Babel as recorded in the book of Genesis in the Christian bible. The story of the tower of Babel came up after people who were speaking only one language united and decided to build one high tower to become famous. God was not delighted with them and he confused their languages such that they started speaking in different languages.

Due to the language confusion, they could not continue with their project and according to the Christian bible, many languages that are present in the world today came up due to the same. Therefore, it is clear that speaking one language is very important because it unites people such that they can be able to undertake a similar project. Some problems and conflicts that are in the world today result from the presence of having many languages as it happened during the time of the Tower of Babel.

As highlighted earlier, other languages are important but on a global scale, English is more important. The issue whether English language is a global language or not is contentious despite the fact that the majority of people in the whole world can communicate in it. In addition, most of the works in different areas such as sciences and literature have been written in English since the authors target meeting a large audience.

On the same note, it is important to point out that most of the works that were originally written in other languages are usually translated into English. As a result, one of the authors concluded in future, all the world literature would be referred to as the English language (Divide).

It is quite true that there is widespread use of English language in the world today but as highlighted earlier, it is not clear whether English will end up becoming a global language. Various studies have indicated that the majority in the world are learning and being taught to speak in English. However, it is important to mention that the number of people speaking a particular language is not the determining factor.

The study of illustrates that the economic as well as the military power of the speakers are usually the most important determining factors. More specifically, the study explains that military power helps in establishing the language but the economic power helps to expand it. Therefore, English may end up becoming an international language not only based on the military power of its speakers but also on their economic power (Crystal).

Although there are some advantages of having one language, it is important to preserve other languages since they are important aspects of culture. According to The Endangered Language Fund, there are about thousand languages which are spoken in the whole world and it is projected that about half of languages may disappear in the twenty first century. Therefore, it is important to perverse those languages failure to which they may become extinct.

There are both advantages and disadvantages of having multiple languages in the world. The story of the Tower of Babel clearly illustrates that having multiple languages leads to misunderstanding, which may eventually lead to conflicts. Language is an important aspect in communication and failure to understand other people does not only lead to conflicts but also lack of harmony.

Though people speaking a similar language may conflict, it is worse when people speak different languages. Secondly, having multiple languages is disadvantageous in the view of the fact that it calls for people to learn and to be taught other foreign languages. Additionally, learning other languages needs not only money but also a lot of devotion.

Currently, people who are learning foreign languages are very few indicating that is not as easy. Translation and localization of products also require additional finances. Therefore, the costs involved in preserving multiple languages as well as the conflicts that emerge from the same are some of the most important disadvantages of having multiple languages.

In the view of the fact that language is an important aspect of culture, it is quite advantageous to have multiple languages since they mark cultural diversity. As much as human beings have had many inventions, studies of Divide indicate that of all the human inventions, language is the greatest.

There are several things concerning culture that can only be learnt and preserved by local languages, which are inclusive but not limited, customs, beliefs, norms and cultural values. Therefore, having multiple languages is very important because it helps in preserving the cultural heritage, which has been developed for many centuries. Apart from that, since the same creates cultural diversity, it can lead to meaningful cultural competition, which may be very beneficial.

The essay has indicated that there are both advantages and disadvantages of multiple languages compared to a single language. Currently, most of the languages are vanishing due to the emergence of international languages, which are becoming very popular. English is an important language in the whole world although the issue whether it is an international language or not is contentious. Most of the English speakers are from the western world like the Americans and they are powerful not only politically but also economically. In the last few decades, there has been a growing interest in the development of English as an international language (EIL). EIL implies a new way of communication across different nationalities and cultures through the medium of a common language. The emergence of EIL and World Englishes is undoubtedly linked to the phenomenon of globalization and it is often stigmatized in the traditional ELT context, which is still dominated by native-speaker standards. EIL is dramatically challenging the ELT profession and further research can help practitioners better appreciate the contribution of EIL to language teaching and intercultural communication all over the world. The contributions collected in this volume are aimed at expanding the EIL paradigm and provide readers with useful insights into the current status and role of EIL.

In the introductory chapter, Sharifian claims that the term World English is used to cover all Englishes from all circles and believes that the traditional three circles metaphor should no longer be used to frame new varieties of English. Emphasis should be laid upon the issue of intercultural communication as most of the exchanges in the world today take place between non-native speakers. The volume is further divided into four main parts aimed at covering a wide range of topics related to EIL.

For example, unlike Chinese, the English alphabet has only 26 letters that form words, and several English words are borrowed from other languages.

English is the language of technology, so knowing English is necessary to make the best use of the internet. It also makes tourism easy, as it helps better understand the people. Also, any international meeting will probably be done in English. This essay will discuss why English is considered a global language.

Let’s face it: almost everyone’s confronted a little anxiety about traveling to a new country where they don’t speak the language. But if you’re a native English speaker and you’ve ever vocalized that anxiety, there’s a good chance you’ve also heard someone respond reassuringly, “Oh, don’t worry — they all speak English there anyways.” Truth be told, speaking English gives you an advantage in a lot of parts of the world where you otherwise might not be able to get by. What makes English such a universal language?

Defining A Universal Language

When linguists and language enthusiasts try to identify an “international,” “world” or “universal” language, they’re not trying to ascribe values to human languages, ranking them as “better” or “worse” than any other. They’re considering how widely these languages are used in various areas of people’s lives — from the tongues they speak at home, to the language that’s spoken to them in schools and in the news, to what they see and hear in works of pop culture and all the other places language pops up in their everyday experiences.

There is little doubt that English has become that very universal language for much of the world. There are roughly 360 million people who speak the language natively, with an estimated 1.5 billion people in total who speak it around the world (that’s roughly 20 percent of the world’s population). Some sources estimate that in at least 45 countries, more than half of the people speak English to some extent. There are also  at least 25 recognized forms of pidgin English thought to exist today.

It holds de jure official language status — meaning the law explicitly recognizes it — in about 60 countries, including Barbados, Ireland, Kenya, Malawi, Jamaica, Singapore, Zimbabwe, the Philippines, Canada and Papua New Guinea. It’s also one of the official languages of the United Nations and the European Union, a nd it’s the most studied language in the world  —  well ahead of French in second place.

So why is it that English has bubbled to the surface of the global linguistic pool? To understand the dominance of English on the world stage, we must look back generations ago to the rise, spread and supremacy of the British Empire. Over centuries of colonialism and commonwealth building, the Brits extended the reach of their dominion to corners of the globe near and far, and they brought their language with them, planting its roots wherever they went. Thus, the language was transported from England to India, South Africa, Australia, the United States and on and on.

Speaking of the United States, you can’t ignore the immense impact of the world’s 20th-century superpower on the expansion of English. Since the end of World War II especially, Americans have projected their cultural, political, economic and military power on the world stage, and by doing so, they helped cement the influence of English. Media from Hollywood, foreign wars, tourism, trade and manufacturing, and the globalization of booming American business have all contributed to the positioning of English as a universal language. Today, English is a majority language of the United States, though not an official one (the United States doesn’t have an official language).

Another reason that English has seen a swell in popularity over the past hundred-plus years is its flexibility — the language is full of loan words and is constantly absorbing new ones as it permeates cultural communities across the world. English speakers gradually adopted words like burrito (from Mexican Spanish), bayou (from the Choctaw Native Americans) and boutique (from French) to describe concepts they never had or needed words for until they came in contact with (or clashed with) another culture. The spongy nature of English makes it adaptable to new worldwide or localized trends that can be linguistically reflected in real time.

English also donates its own words to languages eager to take on particular and peculiar linguistic articles from English that they don’t already have a way to express. In Japanese, French fries are called furaido potato , and ice cream is aisukurīmu . Germans call birth control pills antibabypillen .

All of this English expansion isn’t without significant global pushback , however. There have been concerted efforts by governments and organizations around the world to stop the spread and encroachment of English into languages that have for ages resisted outside influence. The Academie française in France , for example, has created an online campaign to “rehabilitate” French from invading English words like email, le week-end or le best of that have seeped into the common lexicon.

Other Options For A Universal Language

There are other languages scattered around the world that are top contenders for the world’s universal language. By sheer numbers alone, Chinese has by far the most momentum behind it: there are roughly 1.2 billion people who speak the language, making it the world’s most-spoken tongue. But if you’re a Chinese speaker traveling to some foreign part of the globe, you might be less likely to hear your friend say to you, “Oh, don’t worry, they all speak Chinese there.” Why is that?

Well, part of it has to do with the fact that China’s imperial legacy was nowhere as diasporic or far-reaching as the British Empire was; though Chinese people and their language have existed for millennia, they didn’t sail all across the seven seas, establishing empires around the world. And until recently, tourism hasn’t been huge in China, meaning that historically smaller fractions of the nation’s population were leaving the country or the continent and bringing their language with them.

Another reason is that Chinese uses a character-based script that makes it notoriously difficult to learn for people whose native language uses an alphabet in which letters represent sounds — that’s every speaker of English, German, Spanish, Russian, Hebrew, Greek, Arabic, Cherokee and many more.  Picking up English isn’t exactly a walk in the park — it’s got weird and irregular spelling patterns and pronunciations and some funky grammar rules — but compared to Chinese, it’s much less of a challenge.

Throughout time, there have been several languages that might have been considered an international or universal language, and not without reason. One of them was French, which became the language of the nobility in Britain after the Norman Conquest of 1066 and centuries later became the language of diplomacy and communication around the European continent, as well as in France’s territorial holdings in northern Africa and parts of the Middle East, carrying a linguistic prestige.

One can’t undervalue the influence of languages like German or Russian, either, which had great deals of speakers in the last 18th, 19th and 20th centuries and were regarded as somewhat universal means of communication in their regions of influence — Central and Eastern Europe and the former Soviet bloc. Today, German is a major language of the European Union. And Spanish, too, has a wide-reaching influence, found nearly everywhere in Central America and major chunks of South America.

But today, there’s little doubt that these languages pale in comparison to English in terms of worldwide ubiquity and usage. It’s hard to predict when or if another language will match it in popularity, but overall, it’s clear that English as a global force is going to be around for a while.

English as an International Language

The language which is used all over the world for smooth communication is called an international language. Language is important because it’s one of the main ways to communicate and interact with other people around us. English is an international language. For centuries English has been being used for international communication in many countries. It is most widely used in communicating around the world. Now it has created its appeal all over the world and become a must for multilateral communication. So English is called an International Language.

English is playing a major role in many sections like education, medicine, engineering, and business. In order to keep pace with the present world, we should have a good command over English. For maintaining communication with foreign countries and international organizations we should learn English. There are many reasons that make English is the most important language in the world. Then, in order to have access to the latest knowledge, research in the world we need to learn English. Besides, for the sake of higher education, we should learn it.

An international language is one that is used in more than one place or country. Apart from this, we should learn English because it can ensure our future career. English colonization of most of the world is responsible for the spread of English far and wide. However, learning English is an easy task. In the case of learning English, one should learn the grammatical rules very carefully. Without learning grammar, it is not possible to have a good command over English. Our present English textbook which is based on communicative purposes is very helpful for learning English. In addition to its status as a mother tongue in many countries, the global use of English is growing for communication among speakers of other languages in places where English is not the majority language. It introduces us to the communicative functions of English and helps us use it in practical situations. As a result, people having a good command over English are highly valued in the job market. Most of the job exams give priority to the English section. There are many reasons why English has become so popular. One of them is that English has become the language of business.

English is a vibrant and international language with twenty percent of the world’s population speaking English like a native, second or foreign language. However, if I have good knowledge of English I can easily manage a job.

This volume provides an overview of current issues in English as an International Language (EIL) education and critical intercultural literacy pedagogy. The different chapters are inspired by ‘critical interculturality’ as a decolonial project that seeks to interrogate the structures, conditions, and mechanisms of colonial power relations that still pervade our increasingly globalising postcolonial societies; they tend to perpetuate forms of discrimination such as sexism, racism, classism, heterosexism and linguicism.

Divided into five sections, this collection critically examines English Language Teaching textbooks’ integration of intercultural dimensions, the promotion of intercultural literacy in teacher education programs, the management of cultural diversity in multicultural professional/business and educational situations, and the ‘decolonisation’ of the curriculum in various global educational and professional situations. The book presents a range of linguistic approaches as a means of examining the nature of intercultural communication pertaining in EIL varied international contexts. The chapters also reflect a wide diversity of perspectives from local contexts with global relevance and applicability.

Rosalind Pritchard

Ahmed Sahlane  is a senior university lecturer in English, with extensive international teaching experience. He has published several articles and book chapters in mediated political argumentation, critical linguistics, the pragmatics and aesthetics of argumentation and rhetoric in mediated political discourse, with particular reference to the 2003 Iraq War. His research also includes critical pedagogy, intercultural literacy, multicultural education, and social justice. He is the receiver of Top Gun scholarship for Master teachers, CDIS, Burnaby, Canada (2001).

Rosalind Pritchard  is Emeritus Professor of Education and Senior Distinguished Research Fellow at Ulster University where she established a TESOL Master’s degree combining theory with an international teaching practice. She pursues research in higher education and TESOL (especially cross-cultural adaptation and pedagogic strategies). She is a member of the Royal Irish Academy and theUK Academy of Social Sciences. She is an Honorary Fellow of the British Association for International and Comparative Education and Secretary of the European Association for Institutional Research.
