It’s a great idea to use the PowerPoint presentation with your class before letting students jump into working individually. Once you’ve gone over the basics, have your students work through the activity on their own!

What’s great about Middleton is that he takes the time to update his work with the latest lessons and activities. The original Google Sheets lesson is a few years old, but Middleton revised it in 2018 to align with the current version of Sheets and add more content!

Best Google Sheets activities for students to enhance digital learning

Educators are often intimidated by Google Sheets and stick to assigning Google Docs or Google Slides assignments. But Google Sheets activities for students are easier to put together than you think! They’re also engaging, create opportunities for critical thinking and allow learners to be creative. Check out these learning activities and tips, and you might just turn out to be a Google Sheets fan.

What can learners do with Google Sheets?

Meaningful reading log.

If you’re an English language arts educator, you’ve probably assigned a reading log at some point. It’s wonderful to encourage the joy of reading, but oftentimes kids will fill out reading logs with basic information. When they have to keep track of the number of pages they read and the number of minutes, reading may start to feel like a chore.

Instead, a reading log should help learners more deeply engage with the text. To do this, create a three-column chart in Google Sheets for learners. From there, they’ll keep track of surprising moments, how they connected to characters or real people, questions they have, choices they disagree with or predictions they’ve formulated. Learners will make note of the event, question or prediction in one column. Then in the third column, they’ll write a quick thought. 

You can set up the reading log by adding in a drop-down menu in the first column. You can also ask learners for ideas on how they want to engage with the text so it becomes a personalized process.

Physical activity log

If you teach health or physical education, healthy routines are most likely part of your curriculum. Ask learners to keep track of their physical activities outside of school by inputting them into a Google Sheet. 

Rather than just tracking the type of activity and number of minutes, ask them to record how they felt before and after running, doing soccer drills, shooting hoops, swimming, playing hockey, hiking or taking a walk. Then, over time, ask them if they see a pattern in their emotions tied to physical activities.   

Vocabulary journal

An ongoing Google Sheets assignment for learners is a vocabulary journal. You can use this across subjects since reading and vocabulary are part of any course. In each row, learners will add a vocabulary word they come across when reading their textbook, online articles or literature. In the next columns, they’ll add a definition, any Greek or Latin roots and a picture that represents the word. 

Something to keep in mind is that when learners look up definitions in dictionaries, they often don’t understand the definitions. In this case, they still don’t understand the meaning of the word and you’ve just created busy work for them by copying down a definition. It’s best to point them to a kid-friendly dictionary and have them make a note in their journal if they need more clarification.

Fill-in story

Technology Integration Specialist Joli Boucher created a super fun Google Sheets fill-in story activity. In Mad Libs style, learners type in their own adjectives, proper nouns, numbers and more to build a story. Joli’s example is a Halloween activity, but she details the steps for creating your own fill-in story. After learners complete the activity, ask them to share with a partner or the class. Design one for any holiday or event to engage learners and hear some giggles around the classroom. 

Doctors as detectives

The “Doctors as Detectives” activity is actually a full lesson plan The New York Times Learning Network featured. Each learner is assigned a disease to research. Then they create a spreadsheet with symptoms and historical facts. Afterward, their partner uses their Google Sheet to do some detective work and figure out the disease, using complex thinking to determine the answer. 

Math mystery puzzles

An elementary educator in Texas created interactive math activities for learners. In these Google Sheets practice exercises, learners select a question from a drop-down menu and then type their answer into a box. The activity will let them know right away whether their answer is correct or not. 

A “mystery puzzle” with a picture also reveals itself piece by piece as learners correctly answer questions. This is a great way for learners to practice foundational math skills or to review at the beginning of the year. You can also share puzzles based on learners’ abilities. Weather observations

Matt Miller from Ditch That Textbook came up with an idea for science classes to collaborate with classes from other parts of the city, state or country. In Google Sheets, the classes collect data about the weather where they live. This gives them a global learning experience and a chance to compare and contrast data.  

Pixelated art

Educator Brittany Washburn created a Google Sheets activity for learners to collaborate on pixelated art. Learners change the sizes of columns and rows and add colors to cells to create images. Group members can create images of historical architecture, a diagram of the parts of a plant, a fictional character, a map, the Earth’s layers and more. 

Games can be a way for learners to practice critical thinking skills and problem-solving skills. You can set up a Battleship game for learners (or they can set it up themselves!) in Google Sheets. Just like the classic game, learners will use strategy to determine where their opponent’s ships are on the Google Sheet. This could be used as enrichment or as an activity for learners who finish an assessment early. 

Interactive templates

Flippity offers templates and step-by-step instructions for transforming Google Sheets into flashcards and instructional games. Some examples include:

How do you share Google Sheets activities with learners?

Once you have a Google Sheets activity ready for learners, what’s the best way to share it with them? How to Use Google Sheets in the K-12 Classroom

Most spreadsheet programs have similar options, so what characteristics make Google Sheets stand out? Read on.

The most common positives mentioned by users are:

  • You can collaborate with friends and colleagues.
  • You can share the spreadsheet as an embed, either with viewing privileges or editing ones.
  • It can be synced across all devices, whether at home or school.
  • It works on all digital devices whether it’s a Mac, Windows, Chromebook, or iPad.
  • It provides a revision history, allowing you to scroll back to a better version of your work and/or track the contributions of collaborators.
  • It includes a chat window where collaborators can discuss their work before changing the spreadsheet.
  • Because Sheets is part of Google, it easily imports data from other Google Apps. It also exports nicely to the increasingly broad group of partners who work with Google Apps.

One more that I list as a Pro, but could be a Con: Sheets is easier to learn (that’s the Pro). The reason is there’s less to learn (that’s the Con). It focuses on the most popular functions, not the depth of need. If you’re a lite user of spreadsheets, this will serve you well, but if you are moderate to advanced, you may struggle to find the tool you were used to in Excel — if you can find it at all. For example, pivot tables are strictly an Excel tool.

It’s not the most robust spreadsheet available. Other programs handle vast amounts of data better (such as in excess of 1,000 rows) or provide more advanced formulas. It also isn’t the most user-friendly. If you’re used to the ease of creating and formatting in Excel, Sheets may disappoint you (as Google Docs will if you’re used to Word). Depending upon your needs, you’ll want to decide between paying to use Excel or go with the Google Sheets in the Google Apps package.

Also, Sheets is not as customizable as other spreadsheet programs. There are a lot of shortkeys, but not much flexibility in the toolbar setup.

Finally, if you need fancy charts, Sheets may not be your program. Excel has more types of charts, more options for formatting those charts, and more flexibility to quickly change their layouts and styles.

Education applications

Here are nine ways to incorporate Google Sheets into a K-12 class:

Back-end of Google Forms

Google Forms data is collected in Google Sheets. From there, you can analyze, sort, manipulate, format, or share with stakeholders. This is a great two-step process for collecting and using data.

Tables are great for collecting and presenting data, but not always clear. Sheets can fix that. Once the table is created, students can quickly turn it into a chart for a visual display of the data by selecting Insert>chart. Charts can be edited, formatted, inserted into reports, and shared.

This is well-suited for visual learners.

Students as young as third grade can check their answers to math problems using Sheet’s formulas. They first solve the math problem using steps recommended by the school’s native math curriculum and then check their work using Sheet’s built-in formulas.

Starting with adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing is a good way to introduce spreadsheet formulas and unpack what the algorithm means. See that algorithmic string turn into a math solution gets students excited about using what is often considered a geeky math tool.

There is no better tool for sharing group information than a spreadsheet. This might be useful for class party duties, student reading logs, or classmate contact information. Simply add a column of names on the left side and categories of information to the right. This can be completed by students, populated with data imported from an online source, or created automatically from a Google Form. With very little effort, all required information is collected in one place where it can be edited, formatted, and shared.

Thanks to the fill tool, spreadsheets have become a popular medium for certain artists. Here’s an amazing example of the Mona Lisa, drawn in a spreadsheet , and here’s “Cherry Blossoms of the Historical Castle Site ” by Tatsuo Horiuchi, famed Excel spreadsheet artist. Spreadsheets offer an important option most art programs skip: the grid. Thanks to cells, a drawing can be placed and sized in perfect alignment with other parts of the drawing. Sometimes called Pixel Art , it can easily create the boxy Minecraft artwork or Pokemon by simply filling in cells with varied colors. Students can also add shapes, lines, and text to better communicate ideas.

Three options are available: 1) students fill in the cells with different colors to create a picture that can be tied into class inquiry. This is great for Kindergarten-2nd grade. 2) You provide the cell addresses and instructions for what color to add to each cell.  Students treat this option like a scavenger hunt and fill in the cell, add text, or even link it to another location. 3) Students create a drawing and then list the instructions for each cell so classmates can reproduce the drawing.

Evaluating options

Sheets are a great tool to teach problem-solving or critical thinking. Using the native formulas, students can statistically evaluate most number-intensive options. This is popular for high school students who must build a budget for after graduation.

This is best-suited to students who have a strong introduction to the basics Google Sheets.

Google Sheets will complete all the functions found in a paper gradebook without the worry of unclear erasures, losing the book, or running out of room. Sheets provides enough columns to track student activities for a year (such as grades and project submittal) and the flexibility to hide columns no longer relevant (such as Q1 when you’ve moved on to Q2). The built-in formula tools allow teachers to quickly add scores, find class averages, and even weight a grade as needed.

How many of the formulas teachers use is completely up to them. They can simply add all grades for the grading period. Or, they may choose to use Sheets to calculate which students improved from one test to the next, class averages, and trend lines.

Spreadsheet games

These are games played using spreadsheets with the goal of painlessly teaching students the intricacies of spreadsheets. The most popular is Battleship (click for directions), but also consider Battlesheets  from Eric Curts . Both of these support not only Sheets how-to knowledge, but critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

Spreadsheets make it easy to collect data and evaluate it. Because it’s done in a spreadsheet (and not with tabs in a word processing program), it’s easy to create, quick to fill in, and flexibly edited.

Spreadsheets are an agile tool, scalable to varied student needs and at their core, both granular and rigorous. Those who use them find they’re a gateway technology in terms of flexibility, creativity, and optimizing learning.

Google Sheets: Project Ideas and Implementation Across Curriculum

This Easy Google Sheets Hack Will Have Math Teachers Celebrating

Checking work just got way easier 🙌

What were your math classes like? Mine were like this: Picture 12-year-old me sitting in class listening to a lecture by Mr. Smith. Like any good student, I completed my homework that evening and turned it in the next day (hoping it was correct). In a few days, I would receive my paper back with some red “x” marks showing what I hadn’t mastered. But by that time, we had moved on to a new mathematical concept, so it was too late to revisit what I didn’t understand. And so on went the math lessons, until it was time to take a test.

Sadly, this is still the case in many math classes today at the secondary level. But it doesn’t have to be this way. During my training as a Google Certified Educator, I discovered that Google Sheets can provide quick and easy feedback to students and teachers. This has been especially helpful to me when I have limited prep time and a myriad of other school-related responsibilities. Such is the life of a busy teacher! 

Here’s how my Google Sheets hack works. Recently, I introduced a new concept to my seventh grade math students: solving one-step equations. During independent practice, I provide them with a piece of paper, and then I ask them to open the digital assignment from the digital math classroom. Students write down the equations on the paper and solve them. Finally, they “check” each solution using a Google Sheet. (See the graphic below.) As students enter a solution, the cell will reveal the color green if it is correct. If the solution is incorrect, the box will remain yellow. My students are directed to give the problem a second try. If students are still struggling, they may request help from their math partner or me.

Instead of spending your precious time grading or checking work, do less work ahead of time. Create a self-checking Google Sheet using conditional formatting and let an algorithm do the grading for you.

Want to try it for yourself? Here’s how:

1. Find math problems that you want your students to solve.

Be sure to have the solutions as well. On the first day of the lesson, I like to use basic math problems, such as those shown in figure A. 

2. Open a new Google Sheet.

Use column A to indicate the problem number, column B to type the math problem, and column C for the solutions/answers. 

3. Format your Solutions column.

Once you’ve entered the problem and problem number, highlight the solution cells, go to Format in your toolbar, and select the conditional formatting feature. Here, you can provide the correct answer for the Solution column and color-code responses as needed.

For the past two school years, this hack has helped my students accelerate through the math curriculum quicker and more thoroughly. I have found that by using these self-checking assessments, my students are performing better on standards. Even more important, they’ve adopted a “try this again” attitude instead of waiting days for feedback that’s already too late.

And this hack is not just for math class. This formative strategy can be used in other content areas as well, such as vocabulary practice, checking spelling words, or identifying regions on a map for social studies. The possibilities are endless!

Introduction

Google Sheets allows you to organize , edit , and analyze different types of information using spreadsheets. In this lesson, you'll learn about the different ways you might use spreadsheets and how to navigate the Google Sheets interface. You'll also learn the basic ways to work with cells and cell content , including how to select cells, insert content, and copy and paste cells.

All about Google Sheets

Google Sheets is a web-based spreadsheet application that allows you to store and organize different types of information, much like Microsoft Excel . While Google Sheets does not offer all of Excel's advanced features, it's easy to create and edit spreadsheets ranging from the simple to the complex.

While you might think spreadsheets are only used by certain people to process complicated numbers and data, they can actually be used for a variety of everyday tasks . Whether you're starting a budget, planning a garden, or creating an invoice or just about anything else you can think of, spreadsheets are a great way to organize information.

You may notice that there is no save button. This is because Google Drive uses autosave , which automatically and immediately saves your files as you edit them.

In order to use and edit spreadsheets, you will need to become familiar with the Google Sheets interface .

Toolbar Menu

You can use the toolbar menu options to edit and modify your spreadsheet in various ways. Click a menu and select the desired action from the drop-down list.

By default, any new spreadsheet is named Untitled Spreadsheet. Click the title to rename the spreadsheet.

Collaboration Options

Collaboration options allow you to share your spreadsheet with others and make comments as you work.

Shortcut Toolbar

This toolbar provides convenient shortcut buttons for formatting the data in your spreadsheet, like font size, text alignment, and text color.

A column is a group of cells that runs vertically from top to bottom. Columns are identified by letters. Column C is selected in this example.

A row is a group of cells that runs horizontally from side to side. Rows are identified by numbers. Row 9 is selected in this example.

Each rectangle in a spreadsheet is called a cell. A cell is the intersection of a row and a column. Click to select a cell. Cell A1 is selected in this example.

Every spreadsheet can have multiple sheets . Select the sheet tabs to navigate among sheets, and click the plus sign (+) to add a new sheet.

Formula Bar

You can use the formula bar to enter and edit data, functions, and formulas for a specific cell.

Saved Changes Notification

Google Sheets automatically saves your changes as you work. The saved changes notification lets you know your spreadsheet has been saved.

Cell basics

Every spreadsheet is made up of thousands of rectangles, which are called cells . A cell is the intersection of a row and a column . Columns are identified by letters (A, B, C) , while rows are identified by numbers (1, 2, 3) .

Each cell has its own name —or cell address —based on its column and row. In this example, the selected cell intersects column C and row 10 , so the cell address is C10 . Note that a cell's column and row headings become darker when the cell is selected.

You can also select multiple cells at the same time. A group of cells is known as a cell range . Rather than a single cell address, you'll refer to a cell range using the cell address of the first and last cells in the cell range, separated by a colon . For example, a cell range that included cells A1, A2, A3, A4, and A5 would be written as A1:A5 .

Understanding cell content

Any information you enter into a spreadsheet will be stored in a cell. Each cell can contain several different types of content, including text , formatting , formulas , and functions .

To input or edit cell content, you'll first need to select the cell.

  • Click a cell to select it.

You can also select cells using the arrow keys on your keyboard.

To select a cell range:

Sometimes you may want to select a larger group of cells, or cell range .

  • Click and drag the mouse until all of the cells you want to select are highlighted .

  • Select the cell you want to delete .

To copy and paste cells:

It's easy to copy content that is already entered into your spreadsheet and paste this content to other cells.

  • Select the cells you want to copy.

Unlike copying and pasting—which duplicates cell content—cutting and pasting moves content between cells.

  • Press Ctrl+X (Windows) or Command+X (Mac) on your keyboard to cut the cells. The cell content will remain in its original location until the cells are pasted.

There may be times when you want to copy and paste only certain parts of a cell's content. In these cases, you can use the Paste Special option. Click Edit in the toolbar menu, hover the mouse over Paste Special , and select your desired paste option from the drop-down menu.

Rather than cutting and pasting, you can drag and drop cells to move their contents.

To use the fill handle:

There may be times when you want to copy the content of one cell to several other cells in your spreadsheet. You could copy and paste the content into each cell, but this method would be time consuming. Instead, you can use the fill handle to quickly copy and paste content from one cell to any other cells in the same row or column.

  • Select the cell you want to use. A small square—known as the fill handle —will appear in the bottom-right corner of the cell.

The fill handle can also be used to continue a series . Whenever the content of a row or column follows a sequential order—like numbers (1, 2, 3) or days (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday) —the fill handle will guess what should come next in the series. In our example below, the fill handle is used to extend a series of dates in a column.

  • Open Google Sheets and create a new blank spreadsheet .
  • Change the spreadsheet title from Untitled Spreadsheet to Practice Spreadsheet .
  • In cell A1 , type the date using the format M/D/YY (for example, 5/30/17).
  • Use the fill handle to place dates in cells A1:A10.
  • Use drag and drop to move the dates to cells B1:B10.
  • Delete the content in cell B5 .

Google Sheets Rubric Template for Google Classroom Assignments

Google Classroom is a platform that I use as an online hub for all of my classes. I noticed recently that there was an option to create a rubric to assist in grading of assignments, but after playing with it a bit I found the process of creating one in Classroom a bit cumbersome and time consuming. I also noticed that a rubric could be imported from Google Sheets . I use Sheets all the time, and it seemed like it might be a better tool than the native rubric creator on Classroom. The problem was that I didn’t know what format the Sheets file needed to be in to get it to import (my first few tries failed). To figure it out, I created a 1-item rubric in Classroom, then exported it to Sheets. I then opened the file in sheets, which provided a template for a single question that could be copied and pasted to add multiple criteria for an assignment.

In an effort to help others who might be trying to do the same, here is a link to a Google Sheets Rubric Template that I made for Google Classroom (to make a copy for yourself, click the “File” dropdown, then “Make a Copy”). It is formatted only for five criteria/items, with each one having 6 levels. Any cell on here can be modified easily, and you can cut and paste the set of rows for any given criterion to add more below on the spreadsheet. You can also add columns to the right side on each scale if you want to do a 10 point scale and so on.

16 Ideas for Student Projects Using Google Docs, Slides, and Forms

As you probably know, Google Drive is far more than a place to store files online. It also includes a suite of versatile creation tools, many of which perform the same functions as the ones we use in other spaces. These include  Google Docs,  a word processing program that behaves similarly to Microsoft Word,  Google Slides,  a presentation program similar to PowerPoint, and  Google Forms,  a survey-creation tool similar to Survey Monkey.  Although Drive also includes other tools, these three are particularly useful for creating rigorous, academically robust projects. If your school uses Google Classroom or at least gives students access to Google Drive, your students are probably already using these tools to write papers or create slideshow presentations, but there are other projects they could be doing that you may not have thought of.

Below I have listed 16 great ideas for projects using Google Docs, Slides, and Forms.

Annotated Bibliography By the time a student reaches the later years of high school, and certainly by the time she’s gotten to college, it’s likely that she’ll be required to write an annotated bibliography, a list of resources that not only includes the bibliographical information of each source, but also a short paragraph summarizing the resource and reflecting on its usefulness for a given project. Usually an annotated bibliography is required as a part of a larger research paper, but it could stand alone as an assignment that tasks students with seeking out and evaluating sources just for the practice of doing so. And the research tools in Google Docs allow students to locate, read, and cite their sources all in one place. Book Review Instead of a book report, have students write a book review instead. This is certainly not a new idea, but publishing the work electronically allows students to enhance the final product with the book’s cover image, a link to the book’s page on Amazon, and even links to other titles the author has written or articles on related topics. For models and inspiration, elementary and middle school students can read student-written reviews on sites like Spaghetti Book Club . Older or advanced students might work toward more sophisticated, nuanced review styles like book reviews written on Oprah.com .

Collaborative Story Because Google Docs is cloud-based, multiple people can work on a Doc at the same time. So students can work together on a story, a script for a play, or any other kind of group writing project. They can use the comments feature to give each other feedback and make decisions together. And because students can work from any location with an Internet connection, collaboration isn’t restricted to school hours; each group member can work on the project from any location whenever they have time.

Media-Rich Research Paper Any kind of research paper can be given a big boost when done in a Google Doc, because students can insert images, drawings, and links to other relevant resources, like articles and videos. Using the research tools built into Docs, students can research their topics and include in-text citations with footnotes.

Super Simple Blog If you don’t want to mess with actual blogging platforms, but want students to be able to experience writing blog posts that contain images and hyperlinks to other websites, this could be accomplished easily in a single running Google Doc.

Table Being able to organize information visually is an important skill, and students who understand how to build a table in Google Docs will have a skill for presenting all kinds of information in the future. They can be used as a compare and contrast exercise, to display data from an experiment, or even put together a schedule. Yes, you could do these things yourself, print them, and have students fill them out, but why not have students practice creating the tables themselves? 

Choose-Your-Own-Adventure Story Because slides can contain hyperlinks to other slides, students could build a whole story where the reader chooses different options at key points in the story, leading them down completely different paths. The reader would consume the content as a slideshow, clicking on the links themselves as they go through. This could be a pretty massive undertaking, but we all know students who would be totally up for the challenge.

E-book These could take a variety of forms: mini-textbooks, children’s books, cookbooks or how-to manuals, personal art or writing portfolios, even yearbook-style memory books. To learn more about the possibilities, see my post from earlier this year on  Student E-Books .

Magazine Along the same lines as an e-book, students could use a similar template to create a PDF magazine or newsletter that is shared online on a regular schedule. The possibilities here are endless, useful for student clubs or sports teams, classroom or grade-level newsletters, or magazines put out by groups of students who share a common interest, like gaming systems, soccer, or books.

Museum Kiosk Imagine if we could enhance science fair projects with a looping video display that provides the audience with vivid visuals and text about our topic. Or imagine an art show, where a self-running informational slideshow could be placed beside an art display to share the story behind the piece and photos of the work in progress? This is possible and EASY in Google Slides: Simply create a slideshow, then use the “Publish to the Web” feature to create a slideshow that auto-advances and has no need for a presenter. Pop that up on an iPad or laptop and you’re all set. This mock-up of a slideshow on Coral Reefs shows you what it could look like (click the image to open in a new window).

Short Film Students can upload their own images and add text boxes to a slideshow to create an animated story, then record the slideshow with a Google extension called Screencastify . They can either record their own voice as narration, add background music, or both. There are so many different kinds of films students could produce: illustrated stories or poems, final reflections for a 20 Time or Genius Hour project, video textbooks on content-related topics, or news-like feature stories of school or community events. In this quick sample, I added music from YouTube’s library of royalty-free music that anyone can use to enhance their recordings:

Video Tutorial Using the same screencasting software mentioned above, students could also create their own video tutorials by creating a Slides presentation on their topic (such as “How to Open a Combination Lock”), then recording the slideshow with narration. This would make a nice final product for a unit on informational writing or a way for students to demonstrate their learning at the end of a unit in science (“How to Take Care of Lab Equipment”), social studies (“How to Measure Distance on a Map”), or math (“How to Multiply Fractions”). Student-made tutorials could even be created to teach classroom procedures. And any tutorials students make could be stored for later, so other students can also benefit from them.  Learn more about how Screencastify works right inside Chrome .

Peer Survey Whenever students need to gather data to support an argumentative essay or speech, let them gather data quickly and easily by creating a survey with Google Forms. Links to the survey can be sent out via email, QR codes , or through a post in a learning management system like Edmodo or Google Classroom. When results come in, students can use them to support whatever claim they are trying to make in their argument, or make adjustments based on what they discover in their research.

Feedback Form Have students provide feedback to each other’s presentations, speeches, even videos using Google Forms. Here’s how it would work: Each student creates her own form, asking for the kind of feedback she wants on the project. As other students view or the project, they can be sent to a form to offer praise or constructive criticism, which the creator would then be able to view privately and use to improve the project. Students could even use their feedback to write a reflection on their process after the project is done.

Quiz One great way to learn material is to create a test or quiz over the content. Have students use Google Forms to create their own multiple-choice, True/False, fill-in-the-blank, or open-ended quizzes on the content they are learning.

Visual Representation of Data Sets Whenever people enter responses to a Form, Google allows the form creator to view responses in charts and graphs. Have students gain a better understanding of how data can be represented visually by accepting responses (or entering their own fake ones) into a Form, then looking at how the numbers are represented in graphs. This could work well as a series of math lessons.

Way Beyond Worksheets

Just this morning on Twitter, someone posted a comment along these lines: “A worksheet on a Google Doc is STILL a worksheet. Students should be using tech to create!” I’ve heard this sentiment over and over, and it’s exactly why I’ve put this list together. Google offers some incredibly powerful tools if we know how to use them. I hope this list has given you a few new ideas to put into your students’ hands. ♦

This is my first year teaching in an alternative high school. All students have IEP’s as well as social and emotional disabilities. I really want to focus on literacy as many are well below grade-level, ability wise. Writing of course is a big part of literacy. Thanks for compiling these resources. I use many already but haven’t tried Screencastify yet. My district uses Google Classroom, but the forms app is blocked on student accounts- I think because it’s a perfect medium for under-the-radar cyberbullying (“How much do you hate Linda?…A little, a lot, a ton…”). Before teachers plan a lesson using forms, they should make sure the feature is enabled for students in their district. In my district, students can access forms and create them but they cannot send them to other students.

Thank you so much for sharing these ideas about creating projects by using the Google Drive! The middle school I teach at implemented a 1:1 program last year with Chromebooks, so the students have easy access to all of the Google apps. I had always grown up using Word docs and I was a little hesitant to start using Google docs at first. After just a few weeks, I absolutely fell in love with it! It is amazing how you can access all of your docs, forms, slides that you create from any device you’re using and the fact that everything automatically saves is just the cherry on top. I am grateful for this feature, especially working in a middle school where it is easy for students to forget to save something before exiting out. Although I teach Math, I found a lot of your project ideas to be utilized cross-curriculum and I truly appreciate it. I got my feet wet last year and had my students create google slides presentations in groups. At the beginning of this year, I started with a google form I created where students answered review questions from 6th grade Math. I love that when you get the results from all of the forms, you can easily see which areas students are struggling in and which areas they are proficient in because it is presented the results in graphs and charts. I just learned recently that you can create quizzes now, which is awesome because all of the testing in my district is done on the computers, so this will help prepare my students. I want to borrow your idea of having students create peer surveys that they can post on Google classroom in order to gather information and analyze results. This is Holly Burcham, a Customer Experience Manager. The idea Jenn laid out here is to simply create a shared Google Doc where each student would basically be responsible for his/her own page (literally page 1, page 2, etc.). Within a shared Doc, everyone with permission can be in and typing at the same time. Once “posts” are written, students can go in and add comments to others’ work. The comments would show up in the margins and would be arranged by corresponding content, not time like a typical blog post.

But, as you can imagine, this could quickly become very convoluted and a bit messy. The thought behind using Docs as a student blog is more for writing practice, getting the feel for writing a blog post without doing the real thing…

So, if you’re interested in your students truly creating a blog, we highly recommend checking out Edublogs and Kidblog . Hope this helps!

Thanks for the suggestion. I can picture how that would work, yes, but I guess the aesthetic experience might be lacking in a Google Form. With Slides you have complete creative freedom to design the slides like a real book. I guess it would be a matter of personal preference?

Hi! A couple of things that may be of help: Go to “Tools” in the menu bar and select Voice Typing (use Google Chrome). You can also click on Add-Ons in the menu bar and add the Speech Recognition Soundwriter extension for free. There really are so many things you can have the kids do — I would first think about what you’re expecting the kids to be able to do in the end. What will actually be assessed and what will they be accountable for? (I suggest checking out Understanding Backward Design if you haven’t already.) From there, they can choose how to present what they learned, meeting the assessment criteria. I think using some of the ideas in the Slides section of the post could work really well, especially Student Made E-Books , or making a short film.

Thanks for some great ideas! I have another suggestion that I have used before- my students really liked it- a collaborative Google Slides presentation. I did this for types of organic molecules as an intro to organic chemistry. Each pair of students in the class was assigned a specific molecule to research. They had to create 1 slide with some specific information and add to a collaborative google slides presentation that I shared on Google Classroom. When the slideshow was complete, they could all access it, and they used it to take notes.

I am thinking about doing a Rap Challenge in which they (as teams based on which class period they are in) create lyrics using WWII vocabulary we have used.

I create raps for my students and my though was that I would take parts of ALL of their submissions and create a WWII rap to add to the collection they have heard already.

Hi Jim! I think this could be done in Google Docs pretty easily, as they are just writing a script, correct? If you want to share video or audio, you can just put these files into a shared folder in Drive and give all students access to those files. I hope this helps!

I’m a college student (who is now a nanny which brought me to this page) and for the screen recording, I highly reccomend Loom over Screencastify. In my experience using both during the remote learning period, the video quality is much higher on Loom, the user interface is easier, and you can’t edit Screencastify videos in an external editor like iMovie. (I had to do a group presentation and since partner lived in Kuwait we used this vs Zoom, etc. to record the presentation since we weren’t recording at the same time. It was very difficult to figure out how to merge our parts of the presentation into a single file.)

Also with screencastify the time limit per video on the free version (5 min I think) was frustrating as my work was longer. May not be a problem for students but for educators using the tool who don’t have the premium, this could be highly inconvenient. With Loom there isn’t a time limit.

If you’re a student searching for a way to keep your assignments organized, congratulate yourself for taking the time to set yourself up for success. Tracking your assignments is one of the most important steps you can take to help you stay on top of your schoolwork .

In this Writing Tips blog post, we’ll discuss why keeping an inventory of your assignments is important, go over a few popular ways to do so, and introduce you to our student assignment tracker, which is free for you to use.

Why Tracking Is Important

Keeping your assignments organized is essential for many reasons. First off, tracking your assignments enables you to keep abreast of deadlines. In addition to risking late submission penalties that may result in low grades, meeting deadlines can help develop your work ethic and increase productivity. Staying ahead of your deadlines also helps lower stress levels and promote a healthy study-life balance.

Second, keeping track of your assignments assists with time management by helping prioritize the order you complete your projects.

Third, keeping a list of your completed projects can help you stay motivated by recording your progress and seeing how far you’ve come.

Different Ways to Organize Your Assignments

There are many ways to organize your assignment, each with its pros and cons. Here are a few tried and true methods:

  • Sticky notes

Whether they are online or in real life , sticky notes are one of the most popular ways to bring attention to an important reminder. Sticky notes are a quick, easy, and effective tool to highlight time-sensitive reminders. However, they work best when used temporarily and sparingly and, therefore, are likely better used for the occasional can’t-miss deadline rather than for comprehensive assignment organization.

  • Phone calendar reminders  

The use of cell phone calendar reminders is also a useful approach to alert you to an upcoming deadline. An advantage to this method is that reminders on your mobile device have a good chance of grabbing your attention no matter what activity you’re involved with.

On the downside, depending on how many assignments you’re juggling, too many notifications might be overwhelming and there won’t be as much space to log the details of the assignment (e.g., related textbook pages, length requirements) as you would have in a dedicated assignment tracking system.

  • Planners/apps

There are a multitude of physical planners and organization apps for students to help manage assignments and deadlines. Although some vow that physical planners reign superior and even increase focus and concentration , there is almost always a financial cost involved and the added necessity to carry around a sometimes weighty object (as well as remembering to bring it along with you).

Mobile organization apps come with a variety of features, including notifications sent to your phone, but may also require a financial investment (at least for the premium features) and generally will not provide substantial space to add details about your assignments.

  • Spreadsheets

With spreadsheets, what you lose in bells and whistles, you gain in straightforwardness and customizability – and they’re often free! Spreadsheets are easy to access from your laptop or phone and can provide you with enough space to include whatever information you need to complete your assignments.

There are templates available online for several different spreadsheet programs, or you can use our student assignment tracker for Google Sheets . We’ll show you how to use it in the next section.

  • Click on this link to the student assignment tracker . After the prompt “Would you like to make a copy of Assignment Tracker Template ?”, click Make a copy .

2. The first tab in the spreadsheet will display several premade assignment trackers for individual subjects with the name of the subject in the header (e.g., Subject 1, Subject 2). In each header, fill in the title of the subjects you would like to track assignments for. Copy and paste additional assignment tracker boxes for any other subjects you’d like to track, and color code the labels.

3. Under each subject header, there are columns labeled for each assignment (e.g., Assignment A, Assignment B). Fill in the title of each of your assignments in one of these columns, and add additional columns if need be. Directly under the assignment title is a cell for you to fill in the due date for the assignment. Below the due date, fill in each task that needs to be accomplished to complete the assignment. In the final row of the tracker, you should select whether the status of your assignment is Not Started , In Progress , or Complete . Please see the example of a template that has been filled in (which is also available for viewing in the Example tab of the spreadsheet):

4. Finally, for an overview of all the assignments you have for each subject throughout the semester, fill out the assignment tracker in the Study Schedule tab. In this tracker, list the title of the assignment for each subject under the Assignment column, and then color code the weeks you plan to be working on each one. Add any additional columns or rows that you need. This overview is particularly helpful for time management throughout the semester.

1. Make a copy of the student assignment tracker .

2. Fill in the title of the subjects you would like to track assignments for in each header row in the Assignments tab.

3. Fill in the title of each of your assignments and all the required tasks underneath each assignment. 

4. List the title of the assignment for each subject and color code the week that the assignment is due in the Study Schedule .

Teacher to reunite with over 100 students almost 50 years after making solar eclipse promise

A science teacher is set to come out of retirement today and deliver on a 46-year-old solar eclipse promise to his former students.

Patrick Moriarty, who taught Webster Central School District in New York, was handing out worksheets about solar eclipses to his Year 10 students in 1978 when he noticed one of them was due in their area. The teacher promised the 14-year-olds to mark the date as he would deliver a lesson to them when the time came around.

“So I had this sheet of about 50 eclipses that were coming up from like 1974 until 2030,” Mr Moriarty said. “And one of them was going to happen right here in this area on April 8, 2024. So I turned to the kids and I said, ‘All right, circle that eclipse on April 8th, 2024.’”

For the next 16 years, he promised he would deliver on that promise despite the 14-year-olds not believing he would come through with his pledge. “We're going to meet on that day,” Moriarty told Spectrum News . “And they looked at me like I was crazy because they were only 14 years old.”

Former students including Andrea Rock, who was taught by Mr Moriarty in 1998, said he stayed in touch with students and promised he would deliver the lesson once the solar eclipse arrived. “Mr. Moriarity was my teacher in 1988,” a former student at Schroeder High School Ms Rock said.

“And I was like ‘Oh yeah okay.’ Years later he ended up being my 10th grade basketball coach. We were in similar professions. I'm an administrator. He was an administrator. And so our paths had crossed professionally, you know, here and there. So we've sort of stayed in touch then through Facebook .”

Nearly 50 years later, Mr Moriarty kept his promise and is preparing to welcome over 100 of his former students, colleagues, and family to the area. He shared: "It's not about the eclipse any more. It's about people and the sharing and the impact of teachers, the impact of teachers and what teachers can mean to students even when they're 60 years old and they can think back to when they were in junior high.”

The students are delighted to be able to reconnect with their former teacher, according to an ex-student at Spry Junior High Kevin Thompson. “He's keeping his word,” Mr Thompson said. “One of my buddies from class, we're still good friends and it's something I wondered if we're going to do that, that's getting closer, that type of thing.

“I am going to look so forward to hearing Mr. Moriarty teach the lesson that we've waited 40 years to get the experience of,” Thompson added. “Many teachers don't get to experience what he's been experiencing the last couple of years through Facebook and now in-person students sharing what he meant to them in their lives. And it's awesome because teachers don't get to hear that enough.”
