Vikram's I is definitely a Pongal treat

The narrative lacks the pace; we usually associate with a Shankar's film. But he does tell a beautiful tale of love sullied by jealousies, greed and anger. The intriguing screenplay as the director alternates between the light-hearted past and the thrilling present keeps you engrossed. (more)

I is definitely not the best of Shankar, but still it is a one-time watch.

We are all used to Shankar movies with witty, hard-hitting dialogues but this one is not up to the mark. It won't be an exaggeration to say that late Sujatha is badly missed. The only laughs in this film few and far between are provided by Santhanam. (more)

Vikram is one among the top cinema celebrities, who dedicate themselves for their career, completely. The hunchback Vikram might seem to be ugly, but he is so beautiful by his performance. What a terrific performance!!!

The song locations which were taken in China are extraordinary with beautiful bright colors. The other locations include Chennai, Bangkok, Jodhpur, Kodaikanal, Pollachi, Bangalore and Mysore.

Shankar… The director should definitely be praised for his stunning story and the direction. Right from his first movie, he created more expectations. Whether it is Gentleman or Shivaji or Mudhalvan, he made the heroes to get deep into their roles and made them to punch a message. Anniyan is really a benchmark in Vikram’s career. This is possible only by Shankar.

This high budgeted romantic thriller has Santhanam, to make the audience giggle. Though the film has Vikram, doing his best part, he stands in the heart only through the hunchback part. In short, this is the movie, which can be watched in theatres once, for the stunning sets and for Vikram’s hunchback. Cinematographer P.C.Sreeram has done a great job as he did in his films before films.

"I" is a 2015 Indian Tamil-language romantic thriller film directed by Shankar and produced by V. Ravichandran. The movie features Vikram, Amy Jackson, and Suresh Gopi in leading roles, with Upen Patel, Santhanam, and Ramkumar Ganesan appearing in supporting roles. The movie revolves around a talented bodybuilder named Lingesan (Vikram) who dreams of becoming a successful model. He adores a popular supermodel Diya (Amy Jackson) and ends up falling in love with her. Lingesan's life changes when he wins a local bodybuilding competition and is offered a modeling contract by Diya's friend, John (Upen Patel).

Lingesan changes his name to Lee and moves to the city where he starts a modeling career. He becomes popular and soon becomes the face of a leading brand. However, his dreams and aspirations come to a halt when a mysterious virus attacks him and disfigures his face.

With the disfigurement, Lingesan's life takes an unexpected turn, and he decides to take revenge on those who caused him pain. He transforms himself into a hunchback, using prosthetics and makeup to achieve his new look.

In his quest for revenge, Lingesan uses his modeling skills to get close to the people who wronged him. He becomes involved with Jo (Amy Jackson in a dual role), who suddenly gains immense popularity in the modeling world. Jo bears a striking resemblance to Diya and is sought after by John, who gets her involved in his plans to sabotage Lingesan's modeling career.

As the story unfolds, it becomes clear that Lingesan's pursuit of revenge is not only against those who hurt him but also against the entire modeling industry, which he regards as corrupt and superficial. His mission becomes a war against the exploitation of models, which he believes has caused harm and destruction to many aspiring models.

The screenplay of "I" is outstanding, and the performances of the cast are exceptional, especially that of Vikram, who gives his best performance to date. His portrayal of the hunchbacked Lingesan is chilling and heartwarming at the same time, making the audience root for him throughout the movie.

Amy Jackson also delivers an excellent performance, depicting the two different personalities of Diya and Jo, which are so contrasting that the audience never gets confused. The direction by Shankar is top-notch, and his vision to create a cinematic spectacle is visible in every frame.

There are many films from the South which get dubbed in Hindi. While some films unfailingly hit the target, there are many others which simply go down the drain... only to find itself a place in non-prime time slots of TV channels later. This week's release I is 'made-in-Tamil-dubbed-in-Hindi' film which stars the southern sensation Vikram and is directed by Shankar, the very man who gave the cinegoers films like ROBOT, SIVAJI-THE BOSS and others. Does Shankar manage to hit the bull's eye with the Hindi version of I? Let's analyze. The film starts off with the kidnapping of Dia (Amy Jackson), when she is just a few minutes away from tying the knot. The kidnapper is a very strange looking man and also the film's protagonist Lingesan (Vikram). In order to establish the reason for kidnapping, the viewers are treated to a flashback of events which lead Lingesan to kidnap the very Dia, who meant the world to him. A glimpse into Lingesan's past reveals that he happens to be an aspiring and hard working bodybuilder. Despite all the odds and challenging situations, he still manages to participate in the 'Mr. Tamil Nadu' body building championship and wins it. Day in and day out, he dreams of participating and winning the prestigious 'Mr. India' competition, which also explains the reason for his strenuous workouts at the gym. Besides his body building, he is obsessed with Dia, who happens to be a model. He likes and loves her so much that he doesn't even leave a single chance to ogle at her in magazines, TV ads and billboards. If that wasn't enough, he even lands up buying all the brands and products which she endorses, which also includes sanitary pads and women innerwear! Dia, who is constantly harassed by her fellow model John (Upen Patel), gets blacklisted by him after she refuses his sexual advances. That's when Dia finds Lingesan and transforms him into a supermodel. In this journey of being a supermodel, knowingly or unknowingly, Lingesan rubs many people the wrong way, who include the transgender makeup artist Osma (Ojas M Rajani), John, a businessman and also a body builder, all of whom come together as one and team up against Lingesan. The film suddenly changes its course and towards the eand has a startling revelation.

Will these four succeed to destroy Lingesan forever, what was the actual reason for Lingesan to kidnap Dia, what happens when Dia finds out that the creepy looking kidnapper is none other than her true love Lingesan, and what is the startling revelation, is what forms the rest of the film. First things first. The film's director Shankar needs to be applauded for always coming up with 'out-of-the-box' ideas in all his films. This time round, even though he has spared no efforts in mounting the film extremely high on a 'technical canvas', the film seems to be stumbling in many places than one. He has spared no efforts to fill the film with high speed action scenes, VFX, prosthetics and the quintessential movie masala. The film runs on a non-linear format and it keeps oscillating between the flashback and the present, which lands up confusing the viewers many a times. There are many scenes which get repeated in the film. While Shankar does manage to hold the audiences' interest in the first half of the film due to its humour, the film's plot in the second half goes for a total toss as it turns serious. By then, the film stands at the verge of losing its fizz completely. As far as the actors are concerned, it's needless to say that it's an out and out Vikram's film all the way. He deserves full marks to the sincerity and dedication with which he has approached his role. Be it romantic scenes, him flaunting his brawn or his 'equation' with the villains... he scores in all the departments. He effortlessly carries the full film on his able shoulders. On the other hand, Amy Jackson does what was expected of her: to look good and to romance with the hero. While Upen Patel brings nothing new to the table, the surprise package of the film is the southern sensation Suresh Gopi, who makes a startling 'debut' in Hindi films. The rest of the cast help in taking the film forward. The film suffers in the music department (A.R. Rahman), wherein the songs seem to be thrusted into the film's situation. Despite the film suffering from a lacklustre screenplay, it's cinematography (P.C. Sreeram) more than just makes up for it. The same cannot be said about the film's editing (Anthony), who could have simply trimmed the film by around thirty minutes, which could have retained the essence of the film. I , which is basically targeted at the South Indian film industry, will have to depend heavily on the word-of-mouth in order to do good business in Hindi film circuit. A very special mention to the make-up (Sean Foot and Davina Lamont) and also to the team which has done the film's VFX work. On the whole, go for I only if you are a big fan of extravagant masala films.

‘Rest in Peace’

The sleek suspense of a mob thriller and the big, dramatic swings of a telenovela combine to produce something truly unpredictable in “Rest in Peace,” by the Argentine director Sebastián Borensztein. We first meet Sergio (Joaquín Furriel), a handsome business owner and beloved husband and father, as he’s tearing up at his daughter’s lavish bat mitzvah; in moments, the mood shifts, when he spots a menacing stranger eyeing him from a corner and faints. As his wife, Estela (Griselda Siciliani), soon discovers, Sergio is drowning in debt and facing threats from a mysterious, ruthless lender. Their picture-perfect existence is on the verge of shattering — and then it does, albeit not how either of them (or the viewer) might have expected.

A tragic accident offers Sergio a way out of his predicament, though at the cost of his life with his family. The twists of the film are best left unspoiled, because Borensztein and his fine cast (Siciliani is majestic, in particular) achieve an impressive series of tonal tilts in the course of a narrative that eventually spans decades. Just when you think a cat-and-mouse game is about to begin, the film douses you in endearing romantic and familial drama; just as surprisingly, danger creeps back into the narrative. The result is a movie whose genre pleasures are undergirded by genuine emotional heft.

‘Little Palestine: Diary of a Siege’

Between 2013 and 2015, in the midst of the Syrian Civil War, the Yarmouk Palestinian refugee camp in Damascus — known colloquially as “Little Palestine” — was placed under siege. Citizens were barred from entering or exiting the area, and eventually, food and water were restricted, leading to widespread starvation . Amid all this horror, Abdallah Al-Khatib, a Yarmouk resident in his 20s, picked up a video camera and started recording what he saw around him: the tremendous suffering, but also the resilience of resistance.

Edited over several years, “Little Palestine, Diary of a Siege,” which premiered at festivals in 2021 and now arrives on streaming, is a dispatch from the past with uncanny echoes of the present . Al-Khatib’s camera captures his community as they sing, paint, chant, rally, scrounge for food and try to take care of one another. His interactions with the older generation — Palestinians who have endured many displacements over decades — are poignant, underscoring the oppressive cycles of history. But it’s his conversations with the children of Yarmouk, aged far beyond their years but still not rid of hope, that have stayed with me. In one shot, a crowd of schoolboys share their dreams with the camera. Their beaming, excited smiles belie the tragedy of their words. “I dream of my brother coming back to life,” says one. “I dream of eating sugar,” says another.

‘The Last Year of Darkness’

This portrait of Funky Town, an underground nightclub in Chengdu, China is a hypnotic, mutating beast; it goes seamlessly from night to day, techno to the noise of traffic, nonfiction to gently staged drama. To capture the cultural place of this beloved institution — a bastion for free expression and desire that is soon to be shut down because of a subway expansion — the director, Ben Mullinkosson, follows a few of its regulars in and out of the club: a young drag queen, a woman struggling with mental health issues, a Russian expatriate exploring his sexuality, an exuberantly gay DJ. Instead of traditional interviews and documentary scenes, the movie finds intimate moments within layered, often ironic, compositions. In one shot, two people have a deep conversation in the background while a woman vomits into a cup in the foreground; in another, a high-angle shot of a crowd on a street makes the scene look like a kind of pointillist painting. Formally and emotionally expansive, “The Last Year of Darkness” is a stirring evocation of the beauty and ephemerality of being young.

‘Merry Christmas’

Two strangers cross paths on Christmas Eve in Mumbai. He’s just returned from a trip; she’s out in the city with her young daughter, having been abandoned by her philandering husband. A chance meeting at a restaurant leads to another encounter at a movie theater, and then a walk through the city and a drink and a dance back home. Sriram Raghavan’s movie takes its time with its setup, indulging in each scene and exchange with patience and exquisite detail, never showing all of its cards.

From the very first minute to the very last, “Merry Christmas” keeps you guessing — about the motives of the characters, their fates and the type of movie this is. Rom-com? Crime thriller? Black comedy? It’s a little bit of everything, and it’s executed with impeccable yet restrained style, much like Raghavan’s prior outing, “ Andhadhun .” The stars, Katrina Kaif and Vijay Sethupathi, are at once mysterious and winningly sincere, and the film’s storybook-like rendering of a Mumbai decked out for Christmas is delightful.

There’s a moment in Kamila Andini’s sensitive coming-of-age drama that will feel familiar to many women, whether or not they grew up in the rural Indonesian town where the film is set. In a grassy field, a group of high-school girls whisper about sex and desire. It’s the question of pleasuring oneself that both excites and scares them the most. Can women even do it? How does it work? They ask each other.

“Yuni” is about women’s oppression — about the social forces that constrain girls from pursuing their dreams — but its strength lies in its focus on women’s pleasure. The movie’s protagonist, the high-school senior Yuni (Arawinda Kirana), faces some tough dilemmas. She wants to go to college, but her family is already entertaining potential marriage for her. She is eager to explore her body on her own terms, but her school has instituted mandatory virginity tests for the girls in a twisted response to a case of rape.

Things are bleak, and Andini’s sobering film offers no miracle escapes, but it makes it a point to show us the defiance of Yuni and her classmates, their small yet powerful negotiations in this constricted world. Shot with tactile sensuality, as if in formal protest of the systems the movie critiques, the best scenes in “Yuni” are its moments of intimacy between women — dancing, gossiping or dreaming together, helping each other survive an unforgiving world.
