Knitting As A Hobby? (A Detailed Guide)

Knitting is one of the best ways to spend your free time in a rewarding way. And you can find out more about knitting as a hobby in this detailed guide.

Knitting is an old-fashioned and truly unique hobby that might be easy to pick up, yet it can take many years of study and practice to grasp all the different techniques.

This is a hobby that allows one to create many different items with just a pair of knitting needles and yarn. One of the best things about starting this hobby is that it doesn’t cost a lot of money, and it is something suitable for all ages.

What Is Knitting?

Derived from the word “knot” and believed to originate from “knutten,” a Dutch verb, knitting was developed as a method to create garments with stretch.

Knitting involves a method of manipulating yarn to create fabrics or textiles. Knitting creates stitches that involve loops of wool or yarn in rows that are either round or flat.

Knitting fabric is made up of several consecutive rows that contain connected loops. These loops intermesh with the previous and next rows.

As each of the rows is formed, each of the loops that are then created is pulled through the loops from the previous row and positioned on a gaining needle. This allows the loops that come from the previous row to be pulled off without unraveling.

Can Knitting Be A Hobby?

Absolutely. The best thing about knitting as a hobby is that you get to choose how much time you want to spend on it. Knitting is also an inexpensive hobby that can make you some money , especially if this is the first time you are learning this craft.

To get started, all you will really need is inexpensive yarn and a set of wooden or metal needles to get started on your first knitting project.

What Types Of People Like Knitting?

Knitting is ideal for people that are goal-driven or those that like to set achievable goals or tasks. Regardless of what you decide to make, when your projects are successful, your brain will release dopamine, which stimulates the reward center.

This type of euphoria can be compared to a feeling you usually get once you have laid down the final piece of a jigsaw puzzle.

Benefits: Why Knitting Could Be A Good Hobby?

In the times that we live in where we are expected to contribute to “social distancing,” an attention-holding and stimulating hobby can be incredibly beneficial.

This could be the best time to learn knitting, and this hobby offers benefits that extend further than just a distraction from boredom.

Here are some of the top benefits of choosing knitting as your next hobby:

1. An Escape From Life’s Demands

Even a well-versed, consistent routine can be very demanding. Knitting is one of the best ways to take well-deserved breaks, whether it is an hour or just 15 minutes, this is a hobby that encourages a little “you time” every day.

2. Avoid Bad Habits

Let’s be honest, most of us are guilty of spending a lot of our time binge-watching shows, scrolling through social media, or taking too many smoke breaks. Knitting is one of the best ways to occupy your free time in a constructive and rewarding way.

3. Release Stress

Knitting is an excellent outlet to alleviate stress. The technique helps to relax the brain and lower stress levels. Knitting a little bit every day will help to keep your stress levels under control.

4. Improve Focus

Knitting is also a great hobby to enhance focus. With so many patterns to choose from, this is a hobby that has no shortage of techniques and projects that also provides a great workout for your brain.

Are There Drawbacks To Choosing Knitting As A Hobby?

Knitting may have many benefits, but it also comes with a few disadvantages. For some people, the main drawback of this hobby is that it can become extremely time-consuming and monotonous.

While it might be an excellent activity for high-strung or overzealous people, it is not the best option for people that like to dabble in different types of activities and hobbies.

How To Start Knitting As A Hobby

What you will need.

To start knitting, all that is really needed is some yarn and knitting needles. This shouldn’t cost more than $20, depending on the amount of yarn you need.

It is also recommended to invest in a “beginner” knitting book. This will assist you in learning and visualizing the various techniques and steps that will help you to start knitting like a professional.

The yarn comes in many different types, but if you are just starting out, it is advisable to choose a durable yard that is not thin or fuzzy.

The fuzzy yarn typically contains very thin strands with many soft and fluffy strings attached. These are not easy to see once knitted, and they are also usually stretchy, making it harder to complete tight stitches.

Start-Up And Ongoing Costs

Knitting is a fantastic hobby that you could eventually turn into a business. Having big goals and ideas might be great, but it is better to start your business off small, meaning you won’t need much money to get it started.

In fact, many successful knitters started out with minimal money, and most are typically students or work-from-home mothers.

Knitting Business Start-Up Tips

One of the keys to a successful business is to first test the markets, so you are providing what your local market wants, as opposed to what you assume they will want.

One of the best ways to do this is to avoid knitting an entire range. Rather start with two to three products and then see whether they will sell. From here, you can focus your efforts on the ones that are doing well.

The realistic costs of starting any business are going to vary according to where you live. But here are the main items you are going to need to come up with in the start-up budget:

  • Your yarn and knitting supplies
  • Promotional materials such as brochures and business cards
  • Advertising in a local paper, the yellow pages, or on a website
  • Business license or registration

Can You Make Money From Knitting?

It is possible to earn an additional income from your knitting projects, especially when you are professional and quick. Even if you are still an amateur, it is easy to learn the essential basics in under 10 minutes.

Similar Hobbies To Knitting

Various other hobbies share similarities to knitting. Crotcheting is the most similar.

But for those that are looking for a new hobby involving making items out of yarn, knitting is the best option since it is easy to learn and the costs are low to get started.

Alternative Hobbies To Knitting

Knitting is one of the most common hobbies, but you can choose from many other activities that are just as fun and enjoyable. If you enjoy the outdoors or working with your hands, some of the popular alternatives include gardening , journaling, or dancing.

If you prefer creative activities that involve a bit of physical activity, you may want to try coloring, hiking, or pottery .

Where To Learn More

There are several places and sources to help you learn more about knitting. If you prefer to use online resources, there are YouTube Videos, countless websites, forums, and blogs to browse through.

You can also choose to attend physical classes or sign up for an online course. It is also recommended to take out a few books from the library or buy a beginner’s book so that you can visually understand what is required of you.

Why knitting is my favorite hobby, knitting is really fun..

Why Knitting Is My Favorite Hobby

I recently was taught how to knit by a friend of mine. So, now when my friends and I hang out we're all either knitting or crocheting while watching T.V. or whatever we are doing. A lot of people think it's just for older women, but it's really fun.

Repetitiveness

I find the repetitiveness really relaxing, but I know that it's probably not for everyone. I usually do it while watching Netflix or talking to someone and it's not as bad.

If your friends also do some form of craft, it's really fun to get together and do it in groups. We had 'Stitch & Bitch' for one of my club’s socials and it was really nice.

If you're really good at it, you can literary sell your projects to people. People are obsessed with scarves.

Sense of Accomplishment

You can say that you created something.

Waitlisted for a college class here's what to do, dealing with the inevitable realities of college life..

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Don't freak out

This is a rule you should continue to follow no matter what you do in life, but is especially helpful in this situation.

Email the professor

Around this time, professors are getting flooded with requests from students wanting to get into full classes. This doesn't mean you shouldn't burden them with your email; it means they are expecting interested students to email them. Send a short, concise message telling them that you are interested in the class and ask if there would be any chance for you to get in.

Attend the first class

Often, the advice professors will give you when they reply to your email is to attend the first class. The first class isn't the most important class in terms of what will be taught. However, attending the first class means you are serious about taking the course and aren't going to give up on it.

Keep attending class

Every student is in the same position as you are. They registered for more classes than they want to take and are "shopping." For the first couple of weeks, you can drop or add classes as you please, which means that classes that were once full will have spaces. If you keep attending class and keep up with assignments, odds are that you will have priority. Professors give preference to people who need the class for a major and then from higher to lower class year (senior to freshman).

Have a backup plan

For two weeks, or until I find out whether I get into my waitlisted class, I will be attending more than the usual number of classes. This is so that if I don't get into my waitlisted class, I won't have a credit shortage and I won't have to fall back in my backup class. Chances are that enough people will drop the class, especially if it is very difficult like computer science, and you will have a chance. In popular classes like art and psychology, odds are you probably won't get in, so prepare for that.

Remember that everything works out at the end

Life is full of surprises. So what if you didn't get into the class you wanted? Your life obviously has something else in store for you. It's your job to make sure you make the best out of what you have.

Navigating the Talking Stage: 21 Essential Questions to Ask for Connection

It's mandatory to have these conversations..

Whether you met your new love interest online , through mutual friends, or another way entirely, you'll definitely want to know what you're getting into. I mean, really, what's the point in entering a relationship with someone if you don't know whether or not you're compatible on a very basic level?

Consider these 21 questions to ask in the talking stage when getting to know that new guy or girl you just started talking to:

1. What do you do for a living?

What someone does for a living can tell a lot about who they are and what they're interested in! Their career reveals a lot more about them than just where they spend their time to make some money.

2. What's your favorite color?

OK, I get it, this seems like something you would ask a Kindergarten class, but I feel like it's always good to know someone's favorite color . You could always send them that Snapchat featuring you in that cute shirt you have that just so happens to be in their favorite color!

3. Do you have any siblings?

This one is actually super important because it's totally true that people grow up with different roles and responsibilities based on where they fall in the order. You can tell a lot about someone just based on this seemingly simple question.

4. What's your favorite television show?

OK, maybe this isn't a super important question, but you have to know ASAP if you can quote Michael Scott or not. If not, he probably isn't the one. Sorry, girl.

5. When is your birthday?

You can then proceed to do the thing that every girl does without admitting it and see how compatible your zodiacs are.

6. What's your biggest goal in life?

If you're like me, you have big goals that you want to reach someday, and you want a man behind you who also has big goals and understands what it's like to chase after a dream. If his biggest goal is to see how quickly he can binge-watch " Grey's Anatomy " on Netflix , you may want to move on.

7. If you had three wishes granted to you by a genie, what would they be?

This is a go-to for an insight into their personality. Based on how they answer, you can tell if they're goofy, serious, or somewhere in between.

8. What's your favorite childhood memory?

For some, this may be a hard question if it involves a family member or friend who has since passed away . For others, it may revolve around a tradition that no longer happens. The answers to this question are almost endless!

9. If you could change one thing about your life, what would it be?

We all have parts of our lives and stories that we wish we could change. It's human nature to make mistakes. This question is a little bit more personal but can really build up the trust level.

10. Are you a cat or a dog person?

I mean, duh! If you're a dog person, and he is a cat person, it's not going to work out.

11. Do you believe in a religion or any sort of spiritual power?

Personally, I am a Christian, and as a result, I want to be with someone who shares those same values. I know some people will argue that this question is too much in the talking stage , but why go beyond the talking stage if your personal values will never line up?

12. If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would it be?

Even homebodies have a must visit place on their bucket list !

13. What is your ideal date night?

Hey, if you're going to go for it... go for it!

14. Who was/is your celebrity crush?

For me, it was hands-down Nick Jonas . This is always a fun question to ask!

15. What's a good way to cheer you up if you're having a bad day?

Let's be real, if you put a label on it, you're not going to see your significant other at their best 24/7.

16. Do you have any tattoos?

This can lead to some really good conversations, especially if they have a tattoo that has a lot of meaning to them!

17. Can you describe yourself in three words?

It's always interesting to see if how the person you're talking to views their personal traits lines ups with the vibes you're getting.

18. What makes you the most nervous in life?

This question can go multiple different directions, and it could also be a launching pad for other conversations.

19. What's the best gift you have ever received?

Admittedly, I have asked this question to friends as well, but it's neat to see what people value.

20. What do you do to relax/have fun?

Work hard, play hard, right?

21. What are your priorities at this phase of your life?

This is always interesting because no matter how compatible your personalities may be, if one of you wants to be serious and the other is looking for something casual, it's just not going to work.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in challah bread or easter bread.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

A few weeks ago, I was given a loaf of bread called Challah (pronounced like holla), and upon my first bite, I realized it tasted just like Easter Bread. It was so delicious that I just had to make some of my own, which I did.

The recipe is as follows:

Ingredients

2 tsp active dry or instant yeast 1 cup lukewarm water 4 to 4 1/2 cups all-purpose flour 1/2 cup white granulated sugar 2 tsp salt 2 large eggs 1 large egg yolk (reserve the white for the egg wash) 1/4 cup neutral-flavored vegetable oil

Instructions

  • Combine yeast and a pinch of sugar in small bowl with the water and stir until you see a frothy layer across the top.
  • Whisk together 4 cups of the flour, sugar, and salt in a large bowl.
  • Make a well in the center of the flour and add in eggs, egg yolk, and oil. Whisk these together to form a slurry, pulling in a little flour from the sides of the bowl.
  • Pour the yeast mixture over the egg slurry and mix until difficult to move.
  • Turn out the dough onto a floured work surface and knead by hand for about 10 minutes. If the dough seems very sticky, add flour a teaspoon at a time until it feels tacky, but no longer like bubblegum. The dough has finished kneading when it is soft, smooth, and holds a ball-shape.
  • Place the dough in an oiled bowl, cover with plastic wrap, and place somewhere warm. Let the dough rise 1 1/2 to 2 hours.
  • Separate the dough into four pieces. Roll each piece of dough into a long rope roughly 1-inch thick and 16 inches long.
  • Gather the ropes and squeeze them together at the very top. Braid the pieces in the pattern of over, under, and over again. Pinch the pieces together again at the bottom.
  • Line a baking sheet with parchment and lift the loaf on top. Sprinkle the loaf with a little flour and drape it with a clean dishcloth. Place the pan somewhere warm and away from drafts and let it rise until puffed and pillowy, about an hour.
  • Heat the oven to 350°F. Whisk the reserved egg white with a tablespoon of water and brush it all over the challah. Be sure to get in the cracks and down the sides of the loaf.
  • Slide the challah on its baking sheet into the oven and bake for 30 to 35 minutes, rotating the pan halfway through cooking. The challah is done when it is deeply browned.

I kept wondering how these two breads could be so similar in taste. So I decided to look up a recipe for Easter Bread to make a comparison. The two are almost exactly the same! These recipes are similar because they come from religious backgrounds. The Jewish Challah bread is based on kosher dietary laws. The Christian Easter Bread comes from the Jewish tradition but was modified over time because they did not follow kosher dietary laws.

A recipe for Easter bread is as follows:

2 tsp active dry or instant yeast 2/3 cup milk 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour 1/4 cup white granulated sugar 2 tbs butter 2 large eggs 2 tbs melted butter 1 tsp salt

  • In a large bowl, combine 1 cup flour, sugar, salt, and yeast; stir well. Combine milk and butter in a small saucepan; heat until milk is warm and butter is softened but not melted.
  • Gradually add the milk and butter to the flour mixture; stirring constantly. Add two eggs and 1/2 cup flour; beat well. Add the remaining flour, 1/2 cup at a time, stirring well after each addition. When the dough has pulled together, turn it out onto a lightly floured surface and knead until smooth and elastic, about 8 minutes.
  • Lightly oil a large bowl, place the dough in the bowl and turn to coat with oil. Cover with a damp cloth and let rise in a warm place until doubled in volume, about 1 hour.
  • Deflate the dough and turn it out onto a lightly floured surface. Divide the dough into two equal size rounds; cover and let rest for 10 minutes. Roll each round into a long roll about 36 inches long and 1 1/2 inches thick. Using the two long pieces of dough, form a loosely braided ring, leaving spaces for the five colored eggs. Seal the ends of the ring together and use your fingers to slide the eggs between the braids of dough.
  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Place loaf on a buttered baking sheet and cover loosely with a damp towel. Place loaf in a warm place and let rise until doubled in bulk, about 45 minutes. Brush risen loaf with melted butter.
  • Bake in the preheated oven until golden brown, about 30 minutes.

Both of these recipes are really easy to make. While you might need to have a day set aside for this activity, you can do things while the dough is rising or in the oven. After only a few hours, you have a delicious loaf of bread that you made from scratch, so the time and effort is really worth it!

Unlocking Lake People's Secrets: 15 Must-Knows!

There's no other place you'd rather be in the summer..

The people that spend their summers at the lake are a unique group of people.

Whether you grew up going to the lake , have only recently started going, or have only been once or twice, you know it takes a certain kind of person to be a lake person. To the long-time lake people, the lake holds a special place in your heart , no matter how dirty the water may look.

Every year when summer rolls back around, you can't wait to fire up the boat and get back out there. Here is a list of things you can probably identify with as a fellow lake-goer.

A bad day at the lake is still better than a good day not at the lake.

It's your place of escape, where you can leave everything else behind and just enjoy the beautiful summer day. No matter what kind of week you had, being able to come and relax without having to worry about anything else is the best therapy there is. After all, there's nothing better than a day of hanging out in the hot sun, telling old funny stories and listening to your favorite music.

You know the best beaches and coves to go to.

Whether you want to just hang out and float or go walk around on a beach, you know the best spots. These often have to be based on the people you're with, given that some "party coves" can get a little too crazy for little kids on board. I still have vivid memories from when I was six that scared me when I saw the things drunk girls would do for beads.

You have no patience for the guy who can't back his trailer into the water right.

When there's a long line of trucks waiting to dump their boats in the water, there's always that one clueless guy who can't get it right, and takes 5 attempts and holds up the line. No one likes that guy. One time my dad got so fed up with a guy who was taking too long that he actually got out of the car and asked this guy if he could just do it for him. So he got into the guy's car, threw it in reverse, and got it backed in on the first try. True story.

Doing the friendly wave to every boat you pass.

Similar to the "jeep wave," almost everyone waves to other boats passing by. It's just what you do, and is seen as a normal thing by everyone.

The cooler is always packed, mostly with beer.

Alcohol seems to be a big part of the lake experience, but other drinks are squeezed into the room remaining in the cooler for the kids, not to mention the wide assortment of chips and other foods in the snack bag.

Giving the idiot who goes 30 in a "No Wake Zone" a piece of your mind.

There's nothing worse than floating in the water, all settled in and minding your business, when some idiot barrels through. Now your anchor is loose, and you're left jostled by the waves when it was nice and perfectly still before. This annoyance is typically answered by someone yelling some choice words to them that are probably accompanied by a middle finger in the air.

You have no problem with peeing in the water.

It's the lake, and some social expectations are a little different here, if not lowered quite a bit. When you have to go, you just go, and it's no big deal to anyone because they do it too.

You know the frustration of getting your anchor stuck.

The number of anchors you go through as a boat owner is likely a number that can be counted on two hands. Every once in a while, it gets stuck on something on the bottom of the lake, and the only way to fix the problem is to cut the rope, and you have to replace it.

Watching in awe at the bigger, better boats that pass by.

If you're the typical lake-goer, you likely might have an average-sized boat that you're perfectly happy with. However, that doesn't mean you don't stop and stare at the fast boats that loudly speed by, or at the obnoxiously huge yachts that pass.

Knowing any swimsuit that you own with white in it is best left for the pool or the ocean.

You've learned this the hard way, coming back from a day in the water and seeing the flowers on your bathing suit that were once white, are now a nice brownish hue.

The momentary fear for your life as you get launched from the tube.

If the driver knows how to give you a good ride, or just wants to specifically throw you off, you know you're done when you're speeding up and heading straight for a big wave. Suddenly you're airborne, knowing you're about to completely wipe out, and you eat pure wake. Then you get back on and do it all again.

You're able to go to the restaurants by the water wearing minimal clothing.

One of the many nice things about the life at the lake is that everybody cares about everything a little less. Rolling up to the place wearing only your swimsuit, a cover-up, and flip flops, you fit right in. After a long day when you're sunburned, a little buzzed, and hungry, you're served without any hesitation.

Having unexpected problems with your boat.

Every once in a while you're hit with technical difficulties, no matter what type of watercraft you have. This is one of the most annoying setbacks when you're looking forward to just having a carefree day on the water, but it's bound to happen. This is just one of the joys that come along with being a boat owner.

Having a name for your boat unique to you and your life.

One of the many interesting things that make up the lake culture is the fact that many people name their boats. They can range from basic to funny, but they are unique to each and every owner, and often have interesting and clever meanings behind them.

There's no better place you'd rather be in the summer.

Summer is your all-time favorite season, mostly because it's spent at the lake. Whether you're floating in the cool water under the sun, or taking a boat ride as the sun sets, you don't have a care in the world at that moment . The people that don't understand have probably never experienced it, but it's what keeps you coming back every year.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why i chose a small school over a big university..

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin ." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.

1. My school is incredibly unique.

There are so many different kinds of people that each bring something really special to contribute to the school which makes it so unique.

2. I am not just a number at my school.

I am a student that my professors know about and I like knowing that my professors can watch my progress.

3. I feel like I am contributing something to the community.

I like feeling like I can make a difference on my campus.

4. I really do feel like it is my home away from home.

It isn't just my school. It is absolutely my home away from home. I feel so comfortable there and it was as hard of an adjustment as I had thought it would be.

5. My professors know me and I feel that I can easily communicate with them.

I feel like they will do anything to help students succeed. I can always go to my professors. I like knowing that I have someone looking out for me.

6. The incredible people I've met

The people I have met at my school, even after my first year, have made such a huge impact on me. I know that these are people that I will stay friends with long after college is done.

7. Opportunities

My school offers so many different opportunities to get involved in things around campus. Even writing for the Odyssey was an opportunity offered to me by my school and I decided to challenge myself by writing an article. Turns out, I really enjoy writing. I might not have had this opportunity at a bigger school.

8. Students want to learn

I feel as though I am not just learning inside the classroom at my school. I am learning outside the classroom to from my fellow classmates who want to engage about the things we have learned.

9. Ability to join a sorority and have a house full of people I know I can talk to anytime I need to

I wasn't sure if being in a sorority was something I was interested in but when I met the amazing people in the sorority and how inclusive it was, I knew that it was going to be a good thing for me. The people I've met in my sorority have been so amazing.

10. I have figured out how I learn best because my school offers so many different ways of learning.

Because of the smaller class sizes, there is more flexibility in the way the class is taught. This was helpful because I was able to try out different ways of learning and figure out which way I learn best.

Black Women Are Knitting Their Way Into History

Drawing on a long history as seamstresses and makers, Black knitters are grabbing their needles and shifting perceptions.

knitting hobby essay

By Siraad Dirshe

“I was definitely inspired by other people making their bread,” said Ryan Norville, a Brooklyn-based florist. She was talking about the desire that seized her, over the last year, to start making things while stuck at home during the pandemic.

And while baking bread is not her thing, “I was like, ‘I can knit.’”

So Ms. Norville, 28, picked up a pair of needles and yarn and started a blanket for her baby, joining the many restless individuals who dove into hobbies to pass the time (and perhaps, incidentally, even lower their blood pressure and levels of stress and depression).

Even Michelle Obama has been stitching; she told Rachael Ray last fall that “over the course of this quarantine, I have knitted a blanket, like five scarves, three halter tops, a couple hats for Barack, and I just finished my first pair of mittens for Malia.”

For some Black women, though, knitting is more than a pandemic hobby; it’s a way to celebrate an often overlooked history. Black seamstresses have always been a crucial part of the clothing trade, and during slavery and into the Jim Crow era, many used their sewing and knitting skills to scrap together clothes for themselves and their families.

But this history is somewhat outside the visual record.

Darci Kern, a self-proclaimed “maker” based in St. Louis, said when she saw a photo of Sojourner Truth posing with needles and yarn, a light bulb went off: “I was like, there has to be more of this,” she said. After scrolling through nearly 1,400 images of paintings and photos of people knitting on Google Arts and Culture, Ms. Kern found only two who were Black.

Since then, Ms. Kern, 28, has started a self-portrait series titled “ Knitting While Black ” on Instagram. Each week, she scours the internet for images of white women knitting. She then allows her Instagram followers to decide which image she will recreate.

The recreation process involves hours of painstaking research and costume hunting.

“Black people have given this country so much, and as someone who is a direct descendant of people who picked cotton, I think it’s such a travesty that the whole legacy isn’t mentioned,” Ms. Kern said.

Increased visual representation is imperative to honoring the legacy of Black knitters, according to Ms. Kern. Of her white followers, she said, “I want them to understand it’s not a white world, and the reason you can have a great thing that’s relaxing and self-care is because slaves picked cotton.”

Cecilia Nelson-Hurt works as the vice president of diversity and inclusion at L’Oreal; she is also using knitting to spark conversations about race and class. Ms. Nelson-Hurt, 55, comes from a long line of Afro-Latina makers: Her maternal grandmother was a seamstress while her mother baked elaborate wedding cakes. Ms. Nelson-Hurt is continuing the tradition by knitting.

She taught herself to knit after September 11, 2001. “I was like ‘OK, I need something to help me deal with my flight anxiety, my life anxiety,’” she said, adding that she “did not know that this subculture existed.”

The mindlessness of each stitch soothed Ms. Nelson-Hurt then, and it’s doing the same for her today. “In June, I definitely lost my knitting mojo,” she said, referring to the uprisings that followed the killing of George Floyd. “I felt so unsettled, I had to knit through my grief. I’m finding my way back now and able to use my craft as a sign of protest.”

In 2019, conversations about the lack of representation across the knitting supply chain — who frames, makes and sells knits — started to bubble up online. Ms. Nelson-Hurt took the discussion to her social media.

“I am a diversity practitioner, so I’m not just talking about it because it’s a passion point,” she said. “I’m talking about it because it’s what I do.” Last year, she facilitated a panel on diversity and inclusion at the Edinburgh Yarn Festival in Scotland, where attendees are predominantly white.

The discussion of who knits and why needs to be reimagined, Ms. Nelson-Hurt said, “so that when we do bring in people who are different, they feel seen, supported, heard and valued.”

The History Of Knitting

Wondering who invented knitting? The origins are hard to place.

Ancient knitted socks at the Petrie Museum of Archaeology London

Most recorded works shows it has Middle East origins, spreading to other countries via trade routes. People favored the elaborate Arabic-influenced knitting styles.

Origin in Arabic areas are traced back to anglers, who used the technique to create nets. Many nomadic tribes also tended flocks of sheep, and they supplied the yarn for knitting practical items like socks, caps, and robes. [5]

The oldest known knitted object and pieces come from Egypt – socks from the 11th century CE. These socks use the purl stitch and detailed colorwork, and they were made from cotton hand-dyed with plants and berries. [6]

In the same tomb, the socks were found, other fragments were present. A similar technique is called Nålbinding. Knitting uses two knitting needles to create loops, and nålbinding uses one to loop, knot and split the fabric, like sewing.

However, they create an identical fabric! Nålbinding was a favored technique until knitting was introduced to Europe, where it fizzled out. For more on the history of this ancient technique, watch this short, informative video by Ylva the Red.

It’s said purl stitches were created before knit stitches.

Other socks from a similar time period were found in Western Asia, and they also had intricate geometric colorwork, including the early Arabic word for Allah. [6] Also more fragments were found in the ancient city of Dura-Europos in what’s now modern day Syria, estimated to be from before 256 CE.

This video by We Are Knitters gives an informative introduction.

For a more in-depth dive into this fascinating topic, watch this excellent lecture by the knitting historian Liz Kristian, hosted by the Gail Borden Public Library.

Knitting In Europe Takes Off

The earliest known knitted items found in Europe were made by Muslims employed by the Spanish Christian Royal Families in the 13th century AD. The craft of knitting was probably introduced to the continent by Egyptian Coptic Monks. [5]

Their ability to make high-quality knitted goods like cushion covers and gloves is visible in tombs in a Monastery in Spain. Like Prince Fernando, with beautiful, intricate cushion covers.

The Catholic Spanish found these items extraordinary. Garments and accessories are in catholic church treasuries across Spain. The textiles skills Muslim crafters from the Middle East brought to Spain influenced Christianity.

Usually brought through trade routes to the Mediterranean, and further trade routes reaching Spain and the UK. Many paintings of the Virgin Mary from the 14th century portray Madonna knitting.

There’s evidence to show knitting was popular in Italy at the same time, as many items from the era survive, but so little is known about Italian knit history! [2] However, the Catholic Church often commissioned knitted furnishings for their cathedrals. [5]

When Did Knitting Start In England?

It became popular in Europe in the 14th century. Findings by archaeologists, like tax lists in cities like London, Oslo, Amsterdam, and Newcastle. (1)

They show the exchange and use of knitted goods spread throughout European nations throughout the 14th century. Although the purl stitch is in items from Ancient Egypt, the expertise was lost in Europe.

The word “knit” is documented to the 1520s (the 16th century), deriving from the same words giving us “knot.” The Oxford English Dictionary (and other sources) traces the word “knit” to the early 16th century.

The first examples with the purl stitch in other places appeared in the mid-16th century.

Egyptian knitting only had flat knitting. However, flat knitting in Europe was inspired by framework knitting. During the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, the demand for stockings increased, but her father Henry VIII was the first royal to wear them. His son, and Elizabeth’s younger brother, Edward, would be gifted many pairs. [6]

She was a great fan of knitted silk stockings, as the fabric was soft. Knitting schools were created to provide income for the poor. This skill became necessary for the lower classes. They knitted coarse hose from wool with large needles for themselves, and fine stockings with tiny metal needles for the aristocracy. [6]

The renaissance in Europe was a time of experimentation and great expertise in knitting, and that shows in the stockings gifted to many royals at the time. According to estimates by historians, at the end of the 16th century, around 20 thousand people were knitting socks every year! [6]

The first known printed knitting pattern written in English, published in 1655, was an instruction manual on how to make a pair of hose. [6]

In the early days of the American colonies, almost all knitting was done with local sheep’s wool and hand knitting techniques, as the British had outlawed the export of wool and knitting frames. [6]

In what was to be the United States, the wife of George Washington, Martha Washington, was a keen knitter and boosted the craft industry. During the war of Independence, she was a rallying force for the effort to supply soldiers with clothes.

Many years later, during the American Civil War, scores of women on both sides organized to provide knitted socks for the soldiers. Though they could’ve had machine knitted ones, they preferred the handmade ones as they were warmer.

Knitting Guilds in Europe

The first was set up during the Middle Ages and for men. Men’s knitting guilds timelines cover the 1200s-1700s, declining in the mid-16th century.

If young men wanted to work in a guild and become a Master Knitter, they spent six years in training. Women couldn’t be members unless their husband, previously a member, had passed away. [5]

The young men spent three years spent as a trainee and three traveling to countries searching for new techniques and patterns. It seems like the dream life. Provided it was in our century. 🙂 Middle-age guilds weren’t a walk in the park. Working environments wouldn’t have included central heating or cooling!

After finishing six years of study, the apprentice would return home and undergo an exam to gain entrance. The test was making a felted cap, a pair of stockings or gloves, a garment, a shirt or waistcoat, and a knitted carpet!

Apprentices had 13 weeks to finish the exam. They were judged on their mastery, artistry, and good taste. Once they passed the test, they became full members. Most of their customers were royalty or members of the royal courts, as those people were the only ones who could afford the prices. [5]

At the beginning of Queen Elizabeth I’s reign, the knitting industry in Jersey & Guernsey was non-existent, and most of the men in those areas made their money through smuggling. She introduced knitting guilds there to supply the English courts with fine garments, and give the men another choice for a profession. [5]

The mechanical knitting machine or the stocking frame was created in 1589. The English city of Nottingham was a big producer of machine knitted lace during the Industrial Revolution.

The city’s profits grew with the invention of portable circular knitting machines. During the American Civil War, knitting kept their soldiers warm and protected. Unfortunately for scholars interested in this era, it isn’t well documented. (3)

Knitted stockings were in high demand during the civil war. Halfway through the Nineteenth century, most of the knitwear industry hadn’t transitioned to factory machines .

With the improvement of steam-powered machines, machine knitting moved to factories to accommodate larger devices. Machine knitting during the industrial revolution created many fabrics.

This led to the development of machine knitted knitwear on a massive scale, and hand knit fabric fizzed out. Hand knitting in the industry declined. Many hand knitters were put out of business, but it got popular as a hobby.

In the Victorian era, like drawing and learning an instrument, hand-knitting became a desirable pastime for a well-educated high society lady. [5]

The 1920’s: The Roaring Twenties Fashion!

The Roaring Twenties saw a massive increase in the popularity of knitwear in the western world. Knitwear, like pullovers, became a fundamental part of fashion for men, women, and children.

Knitted garments were associated with sports/leisure. High fashion also favored knitted products. Coco Chanel & The Vogue Mag included patterns in their issues.

The 1920s also witnessed a growth in the popularity of this craft. WW1 and the trenches caused a shortage of socks and other items for the armed forces. In the late 20s, knitted sweaters became fashionable, and Cleveland in Ohio was the largest manufacturer in the USA of those items. [4]

Ohio Knitting Mills was one of the oldest and longest-running knitting mills in the country, being founded in 1927 and closed down in 2004.

This lead to governments encouraging those on “The Home Front” to reuse old knitted items and spare wool for knitted clothes for the troops. Companies and wool shops profited from the demands, and needles, patterns, and yarn abounded.

Meanwhile, the losing side of the Russian Civil War escaped to China. They encountered Chinese caravan men, and the Russians passed on the craft of knitting. These caravan men made items and created fabric out of camel hair!

The prominence of knitwear in the fashion of the ’20s continued. The fashionable clothing range changed. Innovations became common with the invention of the zip and new synthetic yarn.

The hardship suffered by many during the Great Depression made people return to making clothes by hand. It was cheaper. Knitting was essential, as socks, underwear, and others needed constant repair.

Patterns were featured in women’s magazines, reflecting the need for hand-knitting. People took a part-time job, handcrafting for profit.

A Little Bit Of History On Vintage Needles

In the past materials such as tortoiseshell, ivory, and walrus tusks were used in the production of knitting needles or knitting pins.

The use of these materials is now banned due to the protection of endangered species. You can find imitation or faux Tortoiseshell vintage needles, they are made of celluloid.

Other materials used in the early 1900s were wood, metal (nickel-plated steel), celluloid (xylonite), casein (made from milk protein) which were often colored, bakelite, and bone.

The process of making bone needles was a smelly and dirty job. Metal needles were prone to rust and are fine in diameter. Lace knitting was very popular.

In the 1930s the circular needle became popular due to the ability to do flat and circular knitting. Usually with a metal needle tip and flexible plastic cable.

WW2: Britain Knits For Victory!

During World War II (WW2), the British Ministry of Information published a handout – Make, Do, and Mend. In this pamphlet, the government department offered information on

  • Saving money
  • Being thrifty
  • Using rationed items and supplies
  • Contributing to the war effort

Wool was limited in the second world war. The booklet encouraged people to unpick old woolen garments to re-use. Patterns were issued so men and women could make these for the army and navy and show their support.

It gave people back at home a sense of purpose and a chance to contribute to the war effort of the second world war. Propaganda often depicted a woman knitting, with posters exclaiming the importance of helping the soldiers.

It wasn’t just women at home who knitted. In WW2, over 1,300 people (almost all women) were employed in the Cleveland plant of Stone Knitting Mills. Over the six-year-long war period, that mill produced over 2 million sweaters for the troops! [4]

In Germany, however, in both world wars, wool was a hard-to-come by material, and what could be used was reserved for essential manufacturing. If German women did knit, they unpicked and reused old garments. [6]

In the late 1940s, desperate for a more optimistic future at the end of the war, the American fashion industry focused more on bright colors, stylish cuts, and sportswear, which knitwear changed to reflect as well. [4]

Jane Waller wrote an essay ‘Knitting Fashions Of The 1940s Styles Patterns and History’ . It’s worth reading if this period interests you. Or, watch this great documentary of wartime knits by Shannon Makes on YouTube.

The 50’s & The 60’s: Haute Couture Garments

After the war years, nations recovered from the terrible losses they’d suffered. British bred specific sheep to produce high-quality yarn.

New colors and yarn types were introduced. Thousands of patterns fed the market, hungry for designs in bright colors.

Kids learned to knit in schools. It was a useful skill to have. Magazines had good ideas and patterns for clothing, blankets, toys, bags, curtains, and other items. People made things to sell for a profit.

As argyle sweaters became popular, an equal demand for argyle socks appeared, and women’s magazines featured dozens of patterns. [6]

1980s and 90s – The Craft Experiences Decline

The popularity suffered a sharp decline during this period. Sales of patterns and yarn collapsed, as the craft was thought of as old-fashioned. Kids weren’t taught in schools. It was a difficult time for the industry.

The availability and low cost of machine-knitted items from commercial companies made it practical and less expensive. People’s attitudes to hand knits changed and it was seen as “uncool”.

Tracksuits and sweatshirts were used as sportswear, not knitwear, as was in the 1920s. Knitwear became smart casual than more relaxed attire. Advances in technology saw digital versions of knitting machines.

21st Century: A comeback!

In the 21st century, knitting has seen a revival. Hooray! This revival is from the growth of the internet, The “Handmade Revolution,” and interest in DIY Crafts.

The Handmade Revolution is the name given to movements online, focusing on bringing back handcrafts. Often facilitated on forums and Pinterest.

Natural fibers became more accessible and cheaper: alpaca, angora, merino, mohair, qiviut, silk, and yak. Also, plant fibers like cotton, bamboo, and hemp.

The yarn industry makes “Novelty Yarns,” using natural and synthetic fibers. The knitting community adapts and blends this wonderful skill. Creating unique trends like arm knitting!

New ideas are forever influenced by the past. The Victoria and Albert Museum has a large exhibit on textiles and knitting. It was interesting! Hand Knitwear designers have experienced more exposure via the digital age and social media.

Ravelry is a platform for knitters to learn from each other and for people to showcase and sell their patterns. Jess and Casey, the founders, created a thriving and passionate community.

Savvy people have used platforms like Instagram and Facebook to create a loyal following. Influencers attract serious popularity.

Loom Knitting @ThePreservationSociety

In the history of loom knitting article by Loom Knitting Help, here is what they said. “Looms used during the Medieval period in France, Britain, Germany, and other European places to knit tasseled caps, shawls, petticoats, blankets, stockings, carryalls, purses, sacks, nets, hammocks, and curtains.” Find out more here .

Knitting Machines History

Who invented the first knitting machine? William Lee developed a frame with a circular form using a spring and barbed needle in 1589. The machine William Lee made have needles on a bed of iron and encased in a large wooden structure.

The needle bed held horizontal, and other parts of the machine worked around this. It relied on manual labor to operate. Still, it was much quicker! It was based on the method of framework knitting, a method of hand knitting on a loom.

Queen Elizabeth I didn’t grant him a patent because she was worried about taking jobs from the poor, who relied on the craft for their income. It wasn’t until the Industrial Revolution that an improved version of his machine was used. [5]

Nowadays, knitting machines run on electricity and do most of the work.

  • The Brother knitting machine timeline spans from 1954 to the present.
  • The Raschel knitting machine dates back to the 19th century. It was usually used to make knitted sweaters. [4]

Fair Isle Knit History

Fair Isle Knitwear by Mati Ventrillon Design in blues and white

Fair Isle knitting originated on the remote island of Fair Isle, one of the Shetland Islands in Scotland. The intricate patterns are famous around the world.

Fair Isle designs are complicated and colorful. The traditional motifs have a long past, and each knitter had their interpretation.

Inspiration for designs and colorwork was found in the Isle’s wild beauty and the lives local people led. Sailors and fishers wore predominantly handmade jumpers. For more on this, read this article by Exclusively Fair Isle .

Norwegian Knit History

Mittens by Marianne Skatten Norwegian Knitting

In graves dated back to the 15th century, knitting remains were found, like garments. According to customs records, Bergen in Norway was a harbor for importing luxury embroidered and knitted items.

Historical accounts have noted it was an activity associated with the lower/poorer classes. By the end of the 16th century, many people studied knitting to have a useful skill to create income. Handknitted Norwegian mitten designs are famous.

Hi Deidre. Some Etsy stores stock Knitpat patterns. Cheers Jodie

I’m using this article for a school project, do you happen to know when it was published? Also, who was the author? Is it Jodie Morgan or is she just an Editor on knitlike granny?

Thank you so much for your time

Hi Eve. Yes, I’m the author of this post. Cheers Jodie 🙂 Good luck with your project!

Nalbinding does not use a “knitting” needle. The fiber is threaded on a sewing type needle and stitches are worked from the fingers.

Hi Susan, I didn’t come across that information when I was researching. I must have missed it. Thank you for telling me, that’s very interesting! I’ll add it to the post so others can learn from your knowledge. Thanks again. Cheers, Jodie

A minor correction if I may.

You note, “The word knit only became listed in the Oxford Unabridged English Dictionary in the 15th century, despite being present since 1400 AD.”

Nothing was listed in the Oxford English Dictionary in the 15th century, as the OED began publication in 1884. The word “knit” in its current sense is documented to the 1520s (that is, the 16th century), deriving from the same group of words that give us “knot.”

The OED (and other sources) trace the word “knit” back to the early 16th century.

Thanks so much John for taking the time to share this information with me. I appreciate your correction and will adjust my article accordingly. Cheers Jodie

Hobbies and Their Importance in People’s Lives Essay

Introduction, stress relief, educational value, companionship.

Hobbies are favorite activities a person does for fun rather than for gain and does so from time to time, not as a regular business. In a way, one may define hobbies as one’s favorite entertainment. Therefore, it is vital to understand the importance of hobbies in people’s lives. Hobbies are not innate passions that are already within one’s personality at birth – on the contrary, their development is a continuous and systematic process. The primary purpose of a hobby is to get joy from it, which is why a part of its definition is that people do not pursue hobbies to make a profit (Kettering University Online, 2019).

It is an important way to achieve mental and physical relaxation. While people may choose many ways to speed up their time, not every activity can restore their lost energy and invigorate them. One may argue that a hobby that suits one’s interests, nature, and budget is the best way to spend free time due to having numerous benefits.

Hobbies are frequently thought of as activities for people who live a calm and relaxed lifestyle. However, people with a busy and stressful lifestyle require them even more than an average person, and can benefit greatly from having them in their lives. Hobbies provide numerous advantages and are usually well worth the time invested. According to (2019), hobbies provide important psychological relief from the constant work-related responsibility.

It is particularly important for those who feel overwhelmed by their work-related activities. For them, it can be challenging to find sufficient time and opportunity and relax from a busy schedule, especially if they perceive hobbies as a waste of time. But engaging in hobbies can be a meaningful break where people are not merely sitting but doing something productive in their free time. As such, a hobby can provide a psychologically useful break during the working week.

Apart from that, hobbies are a great source of pleasure for those who are not overly stressed and may be lacking in stimulation. They provide the healthy type of stress-free offer that people require to continue enjoying their lives. When the rest of life is boring and hard to go on with, hobbies can give purpose and firmness, as well as break up monotonous schedules. More importantly, still, they do so without making people feel like they are working (Jachimowicz et al., 2019).

Group hobbies are particularly rewarding in this respect – golf rotations, creative writing, and even knitting circles groups are all excellent examples. By bringing people together with others, they can provide much-needed social support. Acquaintances that one gets through hobbies have a considerable potential to become best friends, with all the psychological benefits involved. Positive psychology, which focuses on studying what makes life worthwhile, discovers that joy can be beneficial for relaxing and enjoying the present moment. Hence, Hobbies bring joy and relaxation into people’s lives, and maintaining them is beneficial to overall psychological health.

Having a hobby can be very educational, especially since education is virtually synonymous with training. Practicing different activities outside of one’s professional field is a type of training for all sorts of things, and these hobbies can broaden one’s horizons. By pursuing a hobby, one can acquire a lot of experience, skills, and knowledge and even become an expert on certain matters (Kettering University Online, 2019). Even watching a movie can be educational in many respects because cultural values, styles, and norms of a particular society can be effectively communicated through film. Moreover, the film is also an essential medium for communicating history, geographic information, and remarkable scientific discoveries and inventions – and it is only one example of how hobbies can be educational.

Hobbies and interests other than work are becoming increasingly important in people’s lives, as more and more people remain single for longer periods of time or do not start a family until they are in their forties. Research has discovered that hobbies similar to his profession can make people less confident in their work. However, it is only true if the individual in question is extremely passionate about his hobbies and may not have had the opportunity to fully recover from similar job demands. In this case, it is not so much a hobby as a case of poorly structured time, with work-related activities taking too much of it (Kurtz, 2015).

People can still use leisure activities that are similar to their work, although these should ideally be more playful and less committed to balancing personal and professional life better. However, hobbies that are dissimilar to work generally tend to be more effective in both relaxing and educating. By engaging in activities that differ from the usual working routines, a person may ultimately become well-versed in things other than work while remaining psychologically satisfied at the same time.

Hobbies are essential in providing relaxation after periods of intense labor. Jachimowicz et al. (2019) point out that doing something a person likes is basically a necessity after a hard day of work. Moreover, non-paid work can be every bit as taxing as the paid one and necessitate relaxation upon completion as well. Hobbies, therefore, are an excellent opportunity to relieve the pressures of daily work, whether personal or public (Behson, 2020). They bring the mind away from the usual preoccupations and allow us to revel in something done purely for fun and pleasure.

It is also important to remember the sense of ability and accomplishment that a hobby can provide. Ideally, people choose their jobs based on their preferences and abilities, but external factors, such as wages and education availability, play their role as well. As a result, many people end up with jobs they do not particularly like. Hobbies, on the other hand, are chosen based on people’s desires and inclinations to a much greater degree. While there are still objective limitations – one would not be able to pursue the lifelong goal of becoming a space sourest without sufficient money and health – they are still not as relevant. As a consequence, hobbies can promote a sense of flow – the immensely satisfying feeling of doing something that a person is good at – with relatively little investment (Kurtz, 2015). It is a very rejuvenating feeling, and hobbies are one of the best ways to achieve it.

As mentioned above, a hobby is an opportunity to meet other people with similar interests and make friends. Despite the widespread use of information technology and its use for social purposes, there is no substitute for human intercourse. Most would probably agree that spending free time with like-minded people is one of the most satisfying activities there is. Communities provide health benefits by relieving stress and anxiety and providing opportunities for healthy social interactions and activities (Kurtz, 2015). Keeping in touch with groups of people with similar interests can also help to avoid isolation and loneliness and, as such, serves as a causeway to a more fulfilling social life.

Moreover, research suggests that participating in activities other than work increases community ties and civic engagement. For example, volunteering in one’s free time is known to strengthen connections between community members and foster collective pride (Jachimowicz et al., 2019). Moreover, there is also an evident correlation between hobbies and civic engagement, as the two tend to increase and decrease simultaneously (Kurtz, 2015). Given that, one may reliably conclude that hobbies are not only essential ore personal well-being but also help to foster more tightly-knit and efficient communities.

As one can see, hobbies enable people to develop as individuals and realize their potential to the fullest. To begin with, they are very psychologically satisfying, and engaging in one’s hobby is a particularly effective way of relieving stress. In a similar vein, the benefits of the sense of relaxation and self-confidence that hobbies provide are not to be underestimated. Apart from that, hobbies have a significant educational value that enhances their usefulness and importance even further. Finally, the companionship of like-minded people that are associated with hobbies is one of the best ways to strengthen community ties and instill people a sense of belonging. With this in mind, there can be no doubt that hobbies are not a frivolous waste of time but a valuable and important part of one’s life that is definitely worth pursuing.

Start by choosing which hobbies you are going to talk about in the essay. You can choose to list several different hobbies and you can only focus on one. The key is to be true and not make up your hobbies. Your hobbies are a description of your personality. In your essay, you can start by stating what your hobby is followed by how your love for that hobby originated, what inspired you to take up that hobby and how it helps you emotionally. Describe how it helped you develop new skills or helped in certain life situations and helped you become a better person. You can also describe the impact it had on somebody else, like suppose you love nature, so you planted trees which in turn helped the environment or how you like to do social work and helped a homeless shelter. This way, through the essay, a person can understand your values, your vision and your character.

A hobby is work which a person does with much satisfaction and amusement. It is a kind of recreation, a shadow from the scorching beam of the sun and also getting fruit from it. I have been interested in gardening since my childhood. I like to see the green velvety grass, different colours of flowers and beautiful plants. So, I have selected a piece of land in my house and planted different kinds of flowers. I have planted a red rose, yellow and black rose plants and have arranged them one after another. The flowers of -Night Queen”, “Jasmine” and “King of the day” have filled the atmosphere with attractive fragrance. In the evening my family spend their time in the garden. I have also planted Guava and Neem trees, which give shade from the scorching beam and also get fruit from it. I have also reserved a piece of land for growing vegetables and getting different seasonal vegetables. Though gardening is hard work and expensive, the hard labour makes my health sound and we get fresh vegetables and beautiful flowers.

Here is a sample essay on my hobby that students can refer to.

Routine work makes us monotonous. To break it we often look for interesting and exciting things to do. Hobbies are the best way to divert attention side by side with work. We need entertainment from time to time. At such times a good hobby is very useful. Hobbies provide recreation. They entertain us and at the same time are valuable in the sense that they develop a personality.

My hobby is singing. People often resort to gardening, reading, stamp collecting, bird watching, etc. However, I love to listen to music and also to sing. I have a large collection of tapes and I listen to all kinds of music. My collection ranges from classical music to Rock and from Indian music to the Western one. My hobby is to listen to these songs carefully and then to learn them. I sit with a paper and a pen and write down the lyrics of the songs that I hear. Then I hum along and soon I know the tunes too.

I switch the tape recorder off and then I pretend to be the singer myself. I sing the song exactly the way it was sung by the playback singer. I succeed at times and sometimes fail. Once I feel that I have begun to sing perfectly I tape my own voice. When I listen to the recording I listen objectively and try to locate my faults in singing. This helps me to improve on my singing and I find that also helps me to use my talent to my advantage.

Whenever I go to a party, my friends persuade me to sing. Once I begin, the party livens up, people join in and the place is filled with the sound of music. I feel proud of myself and my friends also praise me because they feel that I become the life of the party. I play the guitar and sing when we go on a picnic or when I have a free period in school.

My hobby makes me happy and also brings joy to all my relatives and friends. It is necessary that everybody must have some hobby. It educates man, gives him pleasure, and helps him to utilize his free time fruitfully. If a person has no hobby, his spare time will turn him into a useless, irritated and restless person. “An idle mind is a devil’s workshop”. It is, therefore, essential to remain busy even during leisure hours. Hobbies always come to one’s help.

An Essay on My Favorite Hobby is Painting [PDF]

So you love painting right? great, in today’s essay presentation we are covering an essay topic on my favourite hobby is painting, just for you. I hope you like it!

painting essay feature image

Painting has been a hobby I have embraced for quite some time. Ever since I took the paintbrush and just crafted something on paper, I have never looked back on it. Painting has been a hobby that gives me joy because I can draw my imaginations into an art piece and make the best out of it.

In my own free time, I find peace in painting and looking back to how I spend my leisure, and it has undoubtedly been worth it. My paintings have been quite inspiring to my friends and me as they are mostly of issues in life. Once I sat down and set my mind on a painting, I tend to get into the brush itself and paint just as how I view the inspiration.

As people look for hobbies to engage in, there are certain benefits they look forward to reaping in it. Painting as a hobby has been a great way to relax. In life, I encounter challenges and various stumbling blocks.

I look for my escape in painting so that I can breathe and think about my issues in my own space. When I get challenges instead of overthinking, I tend to draw my energy into painting because the brush has a vibe with me.

I can breathe and paint, and after crafting my art, I feel at peace and relax because I put my focus and think peacefully about the matter. My friends have seen me paint when I am having issues, and they tend to note the tone of my painting reflects my mood because I paint based on issues of life.

Through hard work and the fact that I have learned the skill in painting my confidence has certainly improved. I have often showcased my work to those close to me and several exhibitions, not for sale but for the exchange of compliments.

Through the applaud of the excellent work I get in this hobby, my confidence in handling issues has undoubtedly improved.

Fear of being not good at things has indeed escaped my mind because I see myself worthy of handling matters since I realized that I am a good painter, yet it’s just a hobby I embraced over the years as I was looking for sound therapy.

Getting positive, positive vibes and acknowledgement have indeed built and moulded me to perfect my craft in painting and life.

Painting requires you to be open-minded about how you will go about crafting the perfect art piece. It has undoubtedly helped me be open about how I view my imagination so that I can paint and make the best in my paintings.

I do not articulate my mind on how the painting is supposed to be, but instead, just let my brush and my hand drive and inspire the painting.

In life, this has enabled me to have an open mind on handling issues and become a listener, just like how I listen to my brush. It has helped me become more of a listener and not a complainer on matters.

I have been able to reason with others just like how I can now correctly reason as I paint to make the right curves with my brush. I do not fix myself in because I am not perfect but instead listen and have an open mind to accommodate the thoughts of others.

Painting has enabled me to open up my mind and accommodate other inspirations as I also draw other masterpieces to paint perfectly.

While painting, I have come to appreciate various cultures and diversities of life. As I paint, I can include multiple cultures and ways of life through which people have lived and understand the difference between them and me.

I have learned quite a lot through various pieces of paint canvases as people paint in themes of life which have been my focus. It has enabled me to relate well with people as I understand them better through painting and getting to know their ways and reasons behind their cultures.

How was the essay on my favourite hobby is painting? Please share your thoughts on the comment section.

Essay No 1 My hobby Writing(300 words):

My hobby is traveling . Not for such a long time in my life I have had to travel quite a lot. Why do I like this kind of activity? Well, this question is both simple and complex, as a hobby in the life of every human being arises from the specific life circumstances. Traveling is a hobby of mine for a number of reasons. Firstly, when traveling, you can learn a lot.

When people live in one place and is engaged in all the time the same business, he too gets used to his life, to what surrounds it. He begins to think that somehow did not happen. During the trip, you can dispel this belief. When a person travels, he sees other people’s lives, their way of life, begins to understand their philosophy.

This expands the world of the man himself, forcing him to look at the world through different eyes and become spiritually richer. Secondly, the trip to help check their own forces, very often, they are a kind of test for the human. For example, it is no secret that during some traveling man faces some domestic problems, which can be difficult to overcome. But this definitely needs to overcome, because thanks to him a person receives an extremely valuable experience, becoming more intelligent, skillful, and the like.

Third, after travel, I always feel that I do not live in vain. It seems to me that the more places in the world I will visit, the more I live and fulfilling. However, I am aware that this is more of my personal and subjective.

I never chose a hobby and did not aspire to, to pick up in his capacity as something popular or widespread. It so happened that travel is a hobby for many people. I take this absolutely calm and understanding. I know how to enjoy their hobby and enjoy life as a whole, and I am convinced that it is right. So writing is a hobby .

Dance – the only art form in which we ourselves are a tool.  Ever since childhood, I have been an active and lively child, I liked the music and I’m hearing a couple of rhythmic sounds, selflessly start to dance. And that’s where I grew up a little bit and I was (__) Years old, my mother invited me to go to the dance. At first, I was afraid and capricious, but he found himself in a spacious and cozy at the same time dance hall, I felt not a little worse than feeling at home, dancing in front of a large mirror.

As time went on, our dance group were learning more and more dances, and as soon as it has allowed our “knowledge of the baggage.” teacher dance announced. “The guys are cute, in a month we have a responsible action!” It made me a flurry of emotions and a storm of emotions, but the teacher calmed me, she always knew how to cheer up and configure the desired fashion. The month flew rapidly, we are honing their skills. And finally arrived this hour, our first “moment of glory”. Fear gripped me again, but it was the fear of the public, because before only my mother was a grateful spectator of my home performances.

For all these thoughts that spindle spinning in my child’s head, followed by a woman’s voice. “And now, the guys will take the stage of the (___) with the number (___)”. Then thundered applause greets us. Of course, I was worried, because so many eyes are on us, and on our dance. After the speech (teacher’s name) complimented us and our parents were ecstatic.

My mother and I decided to celebrate my first appearance and went to the children’s cafe, she bought me all kinds of sweets, well, and I’ll just enjoy life. Ever since I have been doing and dancing, and after each performance, my mother and, traditionally, we go to the same coffee shop and me sincerely and childishly happy as then, in my (__) Years.

In the morning I wake up in a good mood because I know that nothing will spoil my holiday! Everyone will be helpful to me, I will indulge my little weaknesses, to caress me. I have just opened my eyes, and my mother is already there. She kissed me on the cheek and congratulated another “anniversary” – it is always the first to congratulate me, she’s my mom! Mom and Dad often gave me crayons many different colors, colored pencils, and a beautiful, snow-white drawing paper. I liked to portray on a sheet of something beautiful, plants, animals, and sometimes humans. So I often do myself cards for mom and dad. However, my first drawings were not the best. Something crooked, something did not work. But I always continued to paint.

I am learning to draw from different websites, tutorials, and instructors on YouTube. I am keen to draw something that brings the attention of art lovers from around the world.

I love colors so when I wake up early in the morning I keep gazing the beauty of nature around me like trees, birds and everything around me. I love to go to art galleries and see the paintings from different angles and dimensions.

Now, it seems to me, I paint very well. My works are hanging on the walls in my room. I often send their works to the contest of children’s drawings and often receive diplomas and prizes. Moreover, I go to art school. I really like it there. In art school reigns true skill and creativity atmosphere. We usually draw a still life, sometimes people. In the summer we go to the open-air and paint nature, flowers, forests, trees, houses. Now my drawings quite good. But someday I want to learn to paint like the Great Russian artists I.Shishkin, Ivan Aivazovsky, and K.Bryullov! I’m sure I can draw even better if I try.

Essay No 6 My hobby Gardening(300 words):

Our hobbies dramatically improve ourselves and our personal traits with overall work performance and mood too. They help us to find the latent talents that we seldom understand and they open the doors for elements that are near us for learning every day a new thing like a stamp collection, music, knowledge, intellect or history of different matters.

I found gardening the best hobby for myself as blooming flowers fills my heart with joy and makes me feel that I have accomplished something from my own hands.

This hobby is good for my overall health and keeps me strong too.  This is a very beneficial exercise that keeps the body and minds active. I give all my attention to my garden when I am free in my home in front of my car porch. Our indoor lawn is also my love and uses it as a rug to enjoy the party with family and friends.

Many kinds of plants are there like jasmine, sunflower, red and mostly all color roses that we recently purchased from a nursery near our home with welcome signboard as well. I love to watch my TV in my garden along with my lovely friends and flowers that I tame. I keep them under my strict sight so they don’t get any hard from anyone or anything. I keep them clean and add fertilizers to plants because they are the wonderful creation of our almighty God. I have also planted vegetables in my garden that I also give as a gift on anniversaries or birthdays.

They also save you from buying them from the market which could be expensive or off. It is really possible to grow them at home and cultivate as necessary or consume.

I am very appreciated by others for my garden and I feel really a great accomplishment in this.

First refuelling for Russia’s Akademik Lomonosov floating NPP

!{Model.Description}

knitting hobby essay

The FNPP includes two KLT-40S reactor units. In such reactors, nuclear fuel is not replaced in the same way as in standard NPPs – partial replacement of fuel once every 12-18 months. Instead, once every few years the entire reactor core is replaced with and a full load of fresh fuel.

The KLT-40S reactor cores have a number of advantages compared with standard NPPs. For the first time, a cassette core was used, which made it possible to increase the fuel cycle to 3-3.5 years before refuelling, and also reduce by one and a half times the fuel component in the cost of the electricity produced. The operating experience of the FNPP provided the basis for the design of the new series of nuclear icebreaker reactors (series 22220). Currently, three such icebreakers have been launched.

The Akademik Lomonosov was connected to the power grid in December 2019, and put into commercial operation in May 2020.

Electricity generation from the FNPP at the end of 2023 amounted to 194 GWh. The population of Pevek is just over 4,000 people. However, the plant can potentially provide electricity to a city with a population of up to 100,000. The FNPP solved two problems. Firstly, it replaced the retiring capacities of the Bilibino Nuclear Power Plant, which has been operating since 1974, as well as the Chaunskaya Thermal Power Plant, which is more than 70 years old. It also supplies power to the main mining enterprises located in western Chukotka. In September, a 490 km 110 kilovolt power transmission line was put into operation connecting Pevek and Bilibino.
