The research study was carried out to investigate the socioeconomic and health effects of cohabitation among off-campus students in Nigeria tertiary institutions with Federal Polytechnic Nekede Owerri as a case study. The study specifically investigated the general attitude of students to the act of cohabitation, the socioeconomic and health effects and if male and female students have the same view with regards to the effects of cohabitation. The researchers used a descriptive survey with case study approach and constructed an "Effects of Cohabitation Among Students Questionnaire (ECASQ)" which was used for data collection after validation by experts and subject to an interrater reliability test in which the questionnaire showed a reliability coefficient of 0.81. The target population was all off-campus students of Federal Polytechnic Nekede of which the purposive sampling technique was used to select 320 respondents out of which 300 responded. This indicated a response rate of 93.75% which was considered appropriate for the study. The collected questionnaires were analysed using mean and standard deviation and the following answers were provided to the research questions: Great number of off-campus students practice cohabitation. The students generally believe that it is wrong to cohabit but are mostly influenced by their peers and their acclaimed love for their partners. Cohabitation mostly results in unwanted pregnancies, high crime rate, low academic performance, abortion, depression and death as evidenced by mean scores higher than or equal to 2.5 i.e. (). From the analysis of variance (ANOVA), it was observed that the views of male students and female students differ significantly. The study recommended that more hostels be provided by school authorities within the school environment, owners of off-campus hostels should put measures in place to discourage cohabitation, parents/guardians should pay unscheduled visits to their children and wards as a way of monitoring their activities and orientation/reorientation programmes should be organised to caution the students on the effects of cohabitation.

The study investigated determinants of religion, gender, age and level of study on couple life behaviour among undergraduates in Osun State, Nigeria. Descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study with samples drawn from 180 cohabiting undergraduates who were purposively drawn from four (4) tertiary colleges in four (4) local government areas of Osun State: Oriade local government; Ikire local government; Odo-otin local government and Ejigbo local government. A Couple Life Behaviour Questionnaire (CLBQ) was designed by the researcher and after ascertaining its face validity and reliability of 0.71 through pilot testing, five (5) research questions were answered. Results showed a positive but insignificant relationship between religion and undergraduates involvement in couple life behaviour (r=0.047, p>0.05); there was however, no gender influence on undergraduates’ involvement in couple life behaviour (F=0.142, p>0.05). Cohabiting has been associated with a number of problems including sexually transmitted diseases and HIV and AIDS, abortions, sexual abuse and violence, low academic performance, increased cost of medical care and unwanted pregnancies. However, there is little documented information on the extent and the factors influencing cohabitation among the youth and especially among tertiary education students. This study therefore sought to fill this gap by investigating factors that lead to the prevalence and practice of cohabitation by tertiary education students. The research adopted the interpretivist philosophy. The qualitative research methodology was employed in order to understand in greater detail the behaviors, attitudes, opinions, and beliefs of the respondents on cohabitation among tertiary education students. The study used the survey research design. Primary research was conducted using questionnaire surveys that were administered to tertiary education students who participated at the Tertiary Education Sports Association of Zimbabwe in July 2016. There were 100 questionnaires distributed and 78 questionnaires were returned making 78% response rate. The respondents were randomly sampled to participate in the study. The study reflects that cohabitation among the Tertiary education students is quite common. The study noted that it is mostly caused by lack of accommodation, problems with roommates, lack of privacy and the need to be close and intimate with one's lover. In results cohabitation exposes students to premarital sex and other consequences such as unwanted pregnancies, abortion, complications and sexually transmitted infections. The study recommends that tertiary education students should be

The study examined prevalence and factors responsible for cohabitation among undergraduates of Adekunle Ajasin University, Ondo State, Nigeria. The population for the study consisted of all the undergraduates of the university, four hundred and fifty (450) students were randomly selected from the six faculties. Prevalence and Factors of Cohabitation among Undergraduates Questionnaire (PFCUQ) was the instrument administered for the study. One research question was raised and three hypotheses were generated based on variables of age, gender and religious affiliation. The findings showed that the first and third hypotheses indicated no significant difference in cohabitation on the basis of age and faculties. Whereas, the second hypothesis indicated that significant difference existed on the basis of religious affiliation. The study therefore recommended that counselling should be given on regular basis to students on the need for good moral and chaste living. Parents, University authority and religious bodies should try to alleviate the problem of cohabitation by providing suitable, conducive and affordable accommodation within the University environment.

Cohabitation is evolving from deviant lifestyle to one that is a normative experience for young men and women in the developing countries. Shortage of on-campus accommodation predisposes tertiary students to adopt cohabitation as an alternative housing strategy. This study examined the relationship between cohabitation and students' academic performance in communities abutting tertiary institutions in Ibadan, Nigeria. Ninety-eight cohabiting students were identified using chain-referral sampling technique. A pre-tested structured questionnaire was administered on the selected students. Findings showed that majority of cohabiters were residing off-campus owing to insufficient on-campus hostel accommodation. Inadequate financial support and high cost of living off-campus were some of the factors predisposed opposite sex to cohabit. Inverse variation was established between period of students' cohabitation and academic grades in tertiary institutions. Lower students' academic performance was significantly associated with longer period of cohabitation (χ 2 (1,102) = 131.321; P < 0.05). Policy that ensures increasing students' population is matched with tertiary institutions' accommodation capacity was recommended.
