All legal regulations can be found in the  University Law , the  Statutes of the University of Vienna  and in the respective curriculum.

Detailed information about supervision, co-supervision and evaluation/grading you can find on the homepage of the 'Büro Studienpräses':  https://studienpraeses.univie.ac.at/infos-zum-studienrecht/wissenschaftliche-arbeiten/diplom-und-masterarbeiten/

Administrative information and SSC-support you can find in the following links (depending on the status of your thesis):

Before starting your thesis

Here you find information on what to consider when writing an academic paper, which rules you have to follow and how to find a topic and a supervisor.

During writing your thesis

You will work on the registered topic together with your supervisor, taking into account the formal requirements of the University of Vienna, and attend the Masterarbeitskonversatorium in parallel.

After completing your thesis

You will receive confirmation from your supervisor that the thesis is ready for submission - for uploading. After uploading, the plagiarism check is carried out and the thesis is then officially sent to your supervisor for assessment. After a positive assessment and if you have already positively completed all other achievements of the degree programme, you can register for the final oral examination.

This repository contains metadata and full text versions of diploma theses, master’s theses and doctoral theses that have been approved at the University of Vienna since 1965.

Since 2008, all graduates have been obliged to archive their academic theses electronically in this repository. The full texts are archived royalty-free (i.e. with maximum protection under copyright) and always following the approval of the relevant authors.

Academic theses that have been approved before 2008 can be uploaded directly to and published on the server, unless this would violate any legal or statutory regulations.

The thesis server provides the opportunity to make your thesis available worldwide. Using structured metadata, the theses uploaded to the server get bibliographic descriptions. They are included in and can, therefore, be found via international library catalogues, search engines and other bibliographic tools. This ensures that the theses are citable through a permanent and stable web address.

Publishing theses is the best protection against plagiarism.

How to do ... Master thesis!

From finding a topic to checking for plagiarism - the process of writing a master's thesis begins way before the last semester and is often complicated as well as tedious. Here's a little "how to do" ... Master thesis!

Finding a topic

Supervision agreement, registration of the master thesis topic, master thesis - accompanying seminar, submit master thesis.

The topic of the master's thesis has to be chosen well - after all, you deal with it extensively and intensively over a longer period of time.

It is important to note that the topic of a Master's thesis must be narrowed down to such an extent that it can be worked on within the statutory period of six months (Statutes of the University of Vienna, §14(1)) This period does not include finding a topic and agreeing on a supervisor!

It is therefore recommended to look for topics suitable for a master's thesis in the courses as early as in the first semesters. Seminar papers not only offer the opportunity to perfect your scientific work. After a (usually very limited) examination of a topic, new research gaps or perspectives often open up, which can be deepened and pursued further in a master's thesis.

By participating in research projects of the institute, it is also possible to find suitable topics for which one has already collected empirical material or gained knowledge. The elective module 16 "Wissenschaftspraktikum" also offers a framework in which this process can be reflected upon and accompanied. Information on current research projects can be found on the homepage of the institute (in work).

If you already have a focus in mind, but are unsure which supervisor might be the best fit, it is a good idea to filter u:thesis in the "advanced search" for master's theses that were supervised by specific supervisors.

You can find the list of authorized supervisors here .

It is not possible to arrange supervision with an external person (e.g. from another institute, another university).

The list of persons authorized to supervise also includes professors who have no teaching duties at the Department of Education, but who are nevertheless assigned to it. This applies in particular to professors who are assigned to the Center for Teaching and Learning (ZLB) or to Gender Studies (SPL 20 Cultural and Social Anthropology).

It is therefore not possible to complete a course with each of the supervisors listed. However, all of them offer a consultation hour in which the topic can be presented or adapted together for supervision. It may also be that the supervisors wish to have a short synopsis in order to have the necessary information whether they can supervise the topic or not.

Whether the topic or even a specific methodological approach falls within the scope of the respective supervisor can also be shown by looking at their publications ! Publications can also be easily searched through u:cris .

It is generally the student's responsibility to organize a supervisor. If you need assistance with this or do not know exactly how to adapt your topic in order to arrange suitable supervision, our study coordination team will be happy to help you.

Core focus of the master thesis

The master thesis is written either in the a) compulsory module group providing basic knowledge or b) selected compulsory module group (I-IV) written. The indication of the focus of the thesis also means the content of the first examination subject of the Master's examination.

The topic of the Master's thesis must be registered and approved by the head of the study program.

For this purpose, the supervisor must already be established as well as the focus in which the thesis will be written.

The following forms are necessary for the registration of the master thesis topic:

  • Application for registration of the topic (incl. synopsis and time schedule).
  • Rules of good scientific practice

Here are minimum requirements for the exposé, which have been set by the study program management and should serve as orientation.

The accompanying seminar for the master's thesis (M17a) is a mandatory module and must be completed in the master's program.

It is not possible to offer an accompanying seminar, that is oriented towards the content of the respective compulsory module group (focal points I-IV), every semester. Therefore, these seminars are usually kept open in terms of content and are rather oriented towards the methodological approach.

The seminars are also usually held so that one can participate at any point in the work process.

Attention! The completion of an accompanying seminar does not mean that the master thesis will be supervised by the respective course lecturer! However, it is advisable to enroll in the accompanying seminar of the supervisor, if the supervisor offers one.

Even if it is a work in progress, which is difficult to assess, a grade must be entered for the seminar. Since this is an examination-immanent course, there are partial assignments which should support the writing of the master thesis (drafting/writing of the exposé, presentation of the master thesis topic, etc.).

Finished? - Submit master thesis

Documents required for the submission of the master's thesis:.

  • Master's thesis - twice hard ( like a book), bound on both sides (see form requirements in the bulletin)
  • Form " Ansuchen um Beurteilung der Masterarbeit " (request for evaluation of the master thesis)
  • Upload confirmation (see steps 4-5) for scientific work at the University of Vienna.
  • Letter of admission - if the BA program was not Educational Science at the University of Vienna (note: fulfillment of possible requirements)

The submission of the master thesis is done both digitally (pdf) and in bound form. The following steps are to be followed:

  • The topic of the master thesis must be approved by the SPL (s. Anmeldung des Masterarbeitsthemas )
  • IMPORTANT: Checking the personal data  on u:space (name change, recording of academic degrees, ...)
  • The master's thesis must meet the specified formal requirements for the submission of scientific work (s. Mitteilungsblatt ).
  • Before printing , the master thesis will be uploaded as pdf. for plagiarism check .
  • The positive upload is documented by a confirmation page, the printout of which (= upload confirmation ) has to be signed and must be submitted when handing in the bound work.
  • The plagiarism check report will be forwarded to the SPL, who will then release the paper for evaluation.
  • The print version must be identical in content to the uploaded electronic version of the work. Therefore, it is strongly recommended to use the uploaded electronic
  • version for the print version.
  • The printing of the work must also be done according to the specified standards ( Mitteilungsblatt  - Bulletin, III. Appendix).
  • The printed master's thesis must be handed in at the SSC in duplicate (information on handing in outside opening hours). After the plagiarism check has determined that the master's thesis is unobjectionable, the SSC forwards it to the supervisor (= reviewer) for evaluation.

Thesis Formalities

The length of your thesis should be around 80 pages. Please clarify the exact length with your supervisor. Please make sure to include two title pages, the first one with the logo of the University of Vienna, the second one with the logo of the University of Vienna and the logo of your first year's university. Birgit Kaiserlehner will provide you with templates of the title pages. The format of the thesis has to be DIN A4, high size. Margins have to be chosen in such a way that the binding of the hard copies is not affected. You should use an "established" standard font, e.g. Arial or Times New Roman. In the thesis, you have to include an English and a German abstract with at least 100 words each. The two hard copies which you have to submit must be hard cover with double-sided printing.

IMPORTANT: For EMGS students, there is no final oral examination (defence)! You only have to submit yor thesis.

To complete your thesis you, personally, will need to take several steps.

1. Feb-June of study year

At the latest in February, you should have found a supervisor and registered the topic of your thesis with the Study Service Center (SSC) of the Historical and Cultural Studies Faculty at the University of Vienna. Two forms and a proposal that you had elaborated during third semester mandatory course Proposal Workshop (a proposal of your planned thesis) need to be handed in at the SSC on Campus.

a. form „ Registration of MA-Thesis topic and supervision “ (form needs to be signed threefold by your supervisor and you).

b. form „ Rules of good scientific practice “

2. March to August 31st of study Year

You will take the course Graduate College and write your thesis that once finished needs to be approved by your supervisor (he/ she tells you, that you can upload it on  HOPLA ).

You should inform Birgit Kaiserlehner when you are done with uploading your thesis.

Your Personal Duties at the Faculty’s Study Administration

1. After submitting your thesis to HoPla, please send the Hopla Upload Confirmation to the SSC from your unet email address.

2. Once the plagiarism check has been completed, the e-version of your thesis will be sent to your supervisor for assessment.

3. You will be notified of the assessment from the SSC by email.

4. Please only order the printing of your thesis once the plagiarism check has been successful. You have to submit the two print versions of your thesis within 10 days after your electronic submission at the SSC. You can either submit them during the opening hours of the SSC: https://ssc-histkultur.univie.ac.at/wir-ueber-uns/oeffnungszeiten/ ) or at the porter's lodge on Campus (Mon - Fri 7:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m.). Alternatively you can send the hard copies to the SSC by registered mail. Please be aware that you are obliged to submit print versions of your thesis (§ 86 UG).

5. You will receive your final certificates from the SSC by email. If you need or want to have the documents as hard copies, please write a mail to the SSC from your unet email address and inform the colleagues about your residential address.

Master Theses Supervision

If you want to write your Master thesis with us, we will happily consider your application. In order for you to make an informed choice whether to apply or not, please do note the following:

When supervising Master theses, we consider it our responsibility to ensure that a given topic

1) Addresses a relevant gap, which can

2) Feasibly be addressed over the course of (the equivalent of) six months full time work by a candidate at Master level.

We retain the right to decide whom we supervise. While we neither need nor do justify related decisions on a case-by-case basis, we do take them in the best interest of both the candidate and our Subject Area (see also below, “Allocation of Thesis Topics”). In this process, we do not apply a standard evaluation scheme but instead assess each case on its own. That being said, and in order for you to manage your expectations, it should be obvious that prior knowledge about the candidate’s skills in pursuing independent academic work – as obtained from observing her in prior courses during the “Strategic Management” specialization, notably during the Master seminar – factors in heavily. We therefore recommend that you only apply for supervision once you have passed our Master seminar.

Candidates pursuing the Minor in Strategic Management only, please find more information here .

Finally, we recommend that you only apply for thesis supervision if you can dedicate six months of your full capacity over the course of the coming 12 calendar months.

In principle, all habilitated professors may supervise Master's theses within the scope of their teaching capacity. In addition, associated professors (= tenure track with fulfilled qualification agreement) may also supervise Master's theses independently. At our faculty, requests should first be made to habilitated colleagues in the respective department. It is also possible for non-habilitated persons to be co-supervisor, but they must at least have completed a doctorate and be employed by the faculty. The application for co-supervision must be made by the supervisor.

By clicking on the picture you will be re-directed to their contact information page. Under each person's image you'll see the list of possible topics for supervision.

Optinally you can browse through the list of possible reasearch topics/areas .

Master's Thesis

The master's thesis consists of independent work on a current research topic and the writing of a scientific paper. Master theses may be supervised by habilitated faculty members. Further possibilities are explained in §15 of the Statute of the University of Vienna .

Since the use of images in scientific works repeatedly raises questions from a copyright point of view, the Studienpräses provides a checklist on the use of images and the guide for " Considering Copyright in Scientific Works " (both in German).

Registration of the Topic

Topic and supervisor of a master's thesis have to be registered at the SSC before starting the thesis. Please bring the registration form , the confirmation of compliance with good scientific practice and a signed short description of the planned project ( research proposal ) to the SSC for registration.

Submission of the academic thesis

A prerequisite for the submission of the academic thesis is the approval of the topic and supervision ( see form ), as well as the submission of the form "Regulations relating to good scientific practice" ( see form ) and also a short description of the planned project ( research proposal ), signed by you and your supervisor. The formal requirements for academic theses must be observed. For data protection reasons, no curriculum vitae or affidavit must be included. Further information on the use of publications in academic theses can be found on the website of the office of the Studienpräses .

Submission procedure

  • Start by uploading your thesis on u:space so that it can be checked for plagiarism. Once you have uploaded the document, you will receive an upload confirmation (“Hochladebestätigung”).
  • If any textual similarities are detected between your work and other texts, the study program management will examine whether it constitutes plagiarism . Please do not proceed with printing your thesis until you have received feedback (via email to your u:account) confirming a successful plagiarism check. The printed version must exactly match the electronically submitted version.
  • After a successful plagiarism check, you must submit the hard-bound copy of your thesis. You will need to present the upload confirmation (“Hochladebestätigung”) for this submission.
  • Two copies of the thesis are required (these must be printed on both sides, hard bound and match the uploaded version)

Please note: From 05.03.2024, the digital version of the academic thesis has to be submitted via u:space .

Firstly, you need to review and verify the data in u:space that will be printed on the title page. This information is automatically loaded from university’s database and includes your name and academic degrees, as well as details regarding the supervision of your thesis.

Every thesis must contain a German abstract of at least 500 characters. The abstract is a brief summary of the central points of your thesis. Optionally, you can also include an English abstract. Please note that depending on the curriculum, an additional obligatory foreign-language abstract may be required.

For the title page of the thesis, there are concrete specifications regarding the layout and the data listed. To ensure that your title page is correct in terms of form and content, the system in u:space will create it automatically from your data.

Please do not use a title page you have created yourself in advance, as this will not be accepted during the formal check.

What is the difference between access restriction and non-publication on the internet / university publication server?

  • The access restriction means that your thesis is neither available online nor in the library during a certain period of time. To do this, you must request an access restriction when uploading and also complete the access restriction request form. For an access restriction request to be approved, you need an important reason, e.g. patents, agreements with companies or already published articles by publishing houses. A planned publication is no reason for access restriction.
  • If you do not agree to the publication being made available on the university publication server when uploading, your thesis is not available on the Internet. It is, however, available in the library. You can decide at any time whether to make your thesis available online or not.
  • Further information on the information sheet of the Studienpräses (in German)
