PhD Programme

Psychology Research Institute / PsyRes

  • Application and Admission

Project & activities

During your PhD appointment, which typically lasts three to four years, your primary focus will be conducting research for your doctoral dissertation. However, we also encourage you to engage in other activities such as taking courses offered by the PhD Training Programme, teaching undergraduate courses in the Departments of Social Sciences, and actively participating in the research community, both within PsyRes and at national and international levels.

Close-knit community

As a PhD student at PsyRes, you will be part of a vibrant community that values your growth and development. We offer coaching, training, and a strong PhD Community to support you throughout your doctoral journey. We encourage our students to publish their research early in their careers, enhancing their academic profiles and fostering their future career prospects.

Programme Groups

You will be assigned to a programme group where you will conduct your research and be immersed in a supportive and collaborative environment. We are excited about newly interest in pursuing a PhD at the University of Amsterdam and look forward to welcoming postgraduate students to our dynamic academic community at PsyRes.

The Brain and Cognition programme aims to gain understanding of cognitive phenomena based on neurobiological principles, and has a focus on using cognitive research to understand clinical phenomena and to develop assessment tools or interventions for specific patient groups. The focus is thus on both typical and atypical brain functioning and cognition. The group has a relatively large number of PhD students and therefore there is ample possibility for interaction with other PhD students, both for research purposes (e.g. asking questions about methods or complicated analysis) as well as for social purposes. Interaction with other members of the program group, i.e. post docs and staff members, is actively encouraged through weekly program group meetings in which plenary talks are given by members of the group from all levels.

There is a strong research-oriented atmosphere and new experimental projects are generally discussed in smaller group settings to foster discussion and collaboration. PhD students are supervised by at least two staff members (promotor and co-promotor) and often part of the Amsterdam Graduate Network, a network organization with PhD students from both the UvA and the VU (in case the PhD project is mostly on the nature of human cognition and its neural basis) by a graduate school of choice (in case the PhD project is in the domain of clinical neuropsychology).

Should you have any questions about pursuing a PhD in the Brain and Cognition group, please click on the link below.

PhD students in Clinical Psychology are always supervised by at least two staff members (promotor and co-promotor) and participate in the teaching programme of the School of Experimental Psychopathology (EPP).

Individual studies of PhD students are generally discussed in small group settings. In these meetings, not only their own studies are discussed, but also major articles in the field. Further, PhD students are encouraged to present their work on international conferences.

Should you have any questions about pursuing a PhD in Clinical Psychology, please click on the link below.

The research group consists tenured staff and about 50% PhD students and postdocs. PhD students are supervised by at least two staff members and become a member of a lab group in which research is discussed in a constructive atmosphere. The interaction between PhD students and other staff is encouraged actively which results in considerable cross-fertilization between several themes of the program.

PhD students and their supervisors prepare a training program at the start of the PhD project, which includes taking courses, for example those offered by research schools like EPP or IOPS. Although PhD students are recruited on the basis of a research proposal, students are encouraged actively to make an independent contribution, especially during the final stages of the project. The progress made by PhD students and postdocs is continuously monitored by their supervisors, and on a yearly basis by the research institute.

Many topics are initiated by PhD students, who fulfill an important role in our research culture. Fortunately, in the last years the number of PhD students increased due to NWO funding. Generally, PhD students are supervised by at least two staff members.

Each month plenary talks are held. The objective of the internal collaboration is to increase the quality and productivity of the group and to improve the unity of the research. Finally, PhD students participate in activities organised by the  Interuniversity Graduate School of Psychometrics and Sociometrics (IOPS) , the institute for the advanced dissertation training in psychometrics and sociometrics.

Should you have any questions about pursuing a PhD in Psychological Methods, please click on the link below.

The Social Psychology research group has a relatively large group of PhD students, which generates a research-oriented atmosphere. Individual experiments are generally discussed in small group settings; these discussions focus on design and measurement issues.

PhD’s are always supervised by at least two staff members and are encouraged to participate in the summer school of the European Association of Experimental Social Psychology (EAESP), and to present their work not only at international conferences but also in smaller scale, more informal, meetings such as those of ESCON (European Social Cognition Network) or CERE (Consortium of European Researchers on Emotions); and in incidental small group meetings sponsored by the EAESP (European Association of Experimental Social Psychology.

Should you have any questions about pursuing a PhD in Social Psychology, please click on the link below.

PhD students in Work and Organizational Psychology work in a cooperative, research-oriented environment and are specializing on various topics in W&O psychology. PhD-students in our group are always supervised by at least two staff members (promotor and co-promotor), with whom PhD-students together actively discuss research ideas and papers. PhD-students also participate in the Work and Organizational Psychology teaching programme in the Bachelor and Master.

Individual studies and papers of PhD students are often discussed in our monthly research meetings with a large section of the programma group. Further, PhD students are encouraged to present their work on international conferences. Finally, they become a member of the Dutch research school Kurt Lewin Institute (KLI), where they follow courses and meet PhD-students (and faculty) from all over the Netherlands.

Application guidelines

Frequently asked questions regarding the application process

1. why should i write a project plan for a project that already exists.

We regard the project plan as a work sample of your ability to think and write scientifically about a topic. As long as you stay within the subject area of the project, you are free to design your plan however you want. It is the scientific quality of your plan that matters, and it does not matter if it deviates significantly from the original plan. If you get the position, you will probably mainly work according to the researcher's plan, but there is usually room for your own ideas, especially towards the end of the PhD period.

2. Can I get more information about the project apart from the title and summary given in the advertisement?

Please contact the project leader for more information. It is up to them how much information about the project they wish to disclose. And note that the research plan is a test of your ability to think and write scientifically about a topic, see also the answer to the previous question.

Doctoral courses

In the Doctoral programme courses corresponding to 75 credits are included. Of these at least 30 credits should be courses in research methodology and at least 30 credits should be subject courses.

Calculating credits for the thesis work

How are the total number of credits allocated to each component of the doctoral thesis?

For students admitted before 1 January 2016, a total of 150 credits are awarded to the thesis. For those admitted after 1 January 2016, a total of 165 credits are awarded. How are these allocated between the summary and the detailed individual studies? What about monographs? The calculating credits for the thesis work document contains instructions on calculating the progression of your thesis work.

Doctoral student teaching

Those with a doctoral studentship can conduct departmental duties up to a maximum of 20 per cent of a full-time position. Doctoral students do not receive a salary for these duties, instead their study period will be extended by the time they have spent on departmental duties.

Once the doctoral studentship has ended, the appointment period will be extended by the number of hours reported. Check with the human resources office each semester to ensure that all of your hours have been reported and registered.

Positions on committees, the Doctoral Student Council, boards and so on also entitle the student to an extension. The Vice-Chancellor has approved a calculation model. Certain duties extend the position by a fixed number of days following the model. Others extend the position by two days and two days per meeting. There is a maximum of 40 days per year. Meeting attendance must be confirmed in the meeting minutes or attendance list, or with a certificate from the chair.

Those who do not have doctoral studentships or are externally employed doctoral students will receive hourly remuneration, or as an appointment following the same principles for extension that apply to those with doctoral studentships.

Remuneration for teaching (In Swedish) Updated 22 February 2011

The document contains information about extending the student finance period due to parental leave, sickness leave, other duties etc., and a calculation model for the extension.

Financing studies

Each applicant must submit a financing plan.

A Government decision stipulates that departments may only admit eligible applicants if their financing is deemed to be secured for the entire period of their studies, and who can devote the majority of their time to their studies so they can be completed within a maximum of eight years.

Hence, each applicant must submit a financing plan. It must include information about when the doctoral studies must be completed and how they will be financed each year leading up to their degree.

The Faculty of Social Sciences guidelines accept the following financing forms for doctoral studies:

Student finance , i.e. employment as a doctoral student, or other form of student financing that amounts to the same as what would be paid out for a doctoral studentship, after tax. There is a limited amount of student finance. The Faculty Board determine how many doctoral students can be admitted with guaranteed student finance throughout their studies before each doctoral position is advertised. This financing is under the condition that the students follow the rate of study as outlined in each individual study plan.

Employment at Stockholm University or with an external employer. In both cases, a written confirmation from the employer must be provided. It must state the duration and scope of the studies that can be pursued during the student’s working hours. As stated above, the doctoral degree must be completed within a maximum of eight years – thus requiring a minimum rate of study of 50 per cent.

Funding for doctoral students

New doctoral students at the Department of Psychology, Stockholm University, are awarded SEK 20,000 to cover thesis-related expenses that may arise during their studies. This grant is separate to the resources available to cover costs relating to the thesis defence. The following rules apply:

  • The grant must be used to cover thesis-related activities that are essential for the doctoral student's progression and thesis work.
  • As part of the work with their individual study plan, the doctoral student and their supervisor must plan how the grant will be used.
  • The director of studies will approve how the doctoral student intends to use the grant, however its use is to be in consultation with the student’s supervisor.
  • The grant cannot be used to cover costs relating to the thesis defence. There are separate resources allocated to this. However, it may be used for a language revision of the thesis.
  • Any unused grant will be returned to the University once the thesis is defended.

Internationalisation

As part of its work with internationalisation, the Department of Psychology wishes to see an increase in the number of doctoral students spending part of their studies abroad in international research environments. Therefore, this grant should (but this is not essential, see point 1 above) be used for this purpose – ideally together with other stipends and/or research grants.

Transitional rules from previous OGRAD application systems

The total amount of funding each active doctoral student has received from previous OGRAD applications will be deducted from the new fixed amount allocated to each doctoral student. Any surplus amount will be the amount that remains for the doctoral student to use up until the day of their thesis defence.

Administrative procedure

When the doctoral student wishes to use their funding, they need to send an email to the director of studies for approval, and cc: their supervisor and finance administrator. Briefly describe how the funding will be used and state the amount.

The finance administrator can provide information about the remaining amount available to the doctoral student.

For invoices and expenses:

  • The doctoral student registers their expenses in Primula (cost centre 30312; reference: 308002).
  • Invoice address Stockholms universitet, Box: 50741, 20270 Malmö, ref: 308 (+ doctoral student’s name). Book travel through Egencia. The department will be invoiced automatically.
  • Any other questions about expenses and finance can be discussed with the finance administrator at the department: [email protected]

The general syllabus contains the overall regulations applicable to both the degree of doctor and the degree of licentiate in psychology, including a brief subject description, the intended learning outcomes, and content.

General Syllabus for Doctoral Studies in Psychology, 240 credits

Individual study plan

An individual study plan must be established within one month of the doctoral student being admitted.

The plan outlines how many course credits and thesis credits must be obtained each year leading up to the final degree. The doctoral student and their supervisor sign the study plan before handing it to the administrator for doctoral education.

At the end of each semester, the student and supervisor must review whether the study plan has been followed. The director of studies is to be notified of any significant deviations from the study plan. In certain cases, this may result in the doctoral student losing their right to supervision and other resources.

As of 2021, individual study plans are created electronically: disp.su.se/app/start

PhD Clinical and Health Psychology

The PhD Clinical and Health Psychology programme provides the opportunity to do a substantial piece of research in an area linked to clinical and health psychology and to develop excellent research skills in the process

Please check the  postgraduate Degree Finder  to see the specific entry requirements, start date and application deadlines.

The PhD programme offers the possibility to work with and be supervised by a range of clinical academics across many areas of psychology, who have international reputations and outstanding publications in their areas of expertise. Our programme is undertaken over three years full-time or six years part-time.

In the first year, students typically choose a number of optional taught postgraduate courses from within the School of Health in Social Science, or other Schools within the University, as appropriate to their research programme, and as agreed with their supervisor. Subsequent years of the PhD programme primarily focus on the completion and analysis of the main research, which can then be written up and completed by the end of the third year.

Current Student Research

Why choose this programme      .

The PhD programme allows you to conduct an independent research project that makes a significant contribution to your chosen field of study and to further develop your research skills. We provide expertise in a variety of research methods including qualitative and quantitative approaches.

Beyond the programme

The research degrees within Clinical and Health Psychology are designed to help you develop your skills for a successful future in research, as an academic or in a related profession.

The PhD Clinical and Health Psychology is typically suitable for those who wish to pursue a career in academia or research, however, graduates from PhD programmes are also increasingly sought after in private, public and third sector organisations.

The PhD Clinical and Health Psychology is an academic/research based qualification. The training for it does not entail clinical work, or training in therapeutic interventions and therefore does not entitle graduates to work as a psychologist in any clinical or applied capacity. Applicants interested in an applied career should consider the Doctorate in Clinical Psychology.

PhD Programmes in Psychology

Europe is, by convention, one of the world's seven continents. Comprising the western most point of Eurasia, Europe is usually divided from Asia by the watershed divides of the Ural and Caucasus Mountains, the Ural River, the Caspian and Black Seas, and the waterways connecting the Black and Aegean Seas.

The PhD is a doctoral degree, specifically called a "doctor of philosophy" degree. This is misleading because PhD holders are not necessarily philosophers (unless they earned their degree in philosophy!). That said, PhD recipients are able to engage in thought experiments, reason about problems, and solve problems in sophisticated ways.

Course Overview

An MPhil/PhD is an advanced postgraduate research degree that requires original research and the submission of a substantial dissertation of 60,000 to 100,000 words. At Birkbeck, you are initially registered on an MPhil and you upgrade to a PhD after satisfactory progress in the first year or two. You need to find a suitable academic supervisor at Birkbeck, who can offer the requisite expertise to guide and support you through your research.  Find out more about undertaking a research degree at Birkbeck .

The MPhil/PhD in Organizational Psychology aims to train you to conduct research of a high academic standard and to make an original contribution to the subject through your thesis. It will not only prepare you to undertake research for your own dissertation, but will also equip you to be able to evaluate research results and reports more widely.

Our research interests include: selection and assessment; training; organisational communication; organisation studies and organisational sociology; well-being and emotion; technology development and organisational change; human resource management; employment and psychological contracts; pay; careers and innovation. We also have expertise in, and are committed to, both qualitative and quantitative research techniques.

Please note, the PhD in Organizational Psychology is a research degree. If you are a practitioner, our Professional Doctorate in Occupational Psychology and associated British Psychological Society and Health and Care Professions Council accreditations might be more suitable.

Before submitting an application, please ensure that you read the submission guidelines carefully, and note that research proposals should be no longer than 1500 words (excluding references).
