group photo of graduates in the graduate program of Immunology

Creative and innovative research is the hallmark of our graduate program in the University of Michigan Medical School Department of Microbiology and Immunology. This challenging program is designed to provide a nurturing environment in which graduate students can fully develop and express their intellectual talents, research skills, and teaching abilities.

These goals are accomplished through an integrated program of independent research, graduate courses, seminars and teaching. Entering students select from a wide range of stimulating courses designed to complete their preparation for advanced study and research. Molecular and cellular immunology, microbial pathogenesis, molecular virology, microbial physiology, cellular and molecular networks, biochemistry and molecular genetics are some of the topics covered in our courses.

To facilitate development of skills necessary for a career in modern research and teaching, many courses are oriented towards discussion of the primary research literature.

Students can enter the PhD program in the Fall terms only.

The Program in Biological Sciences Department (PIBS), coordinates first-year graduate studies for 14 biomedical Ph.D. programs at the University of Michigan Medical School, including the Doctoral Program in Microbiology & Immunology. All admissions are handled through PIBS.

Please visit the PIBS webpage for an online application. All application materials should be sent to the PIBS Office.

Applicants to the doctoral program are automatically considered for financial aid. In addition, applicants are encouraged to seek competitive national sources of fellowships. Because funding opportunities are more limited for foreign students, foreign applicants are urged to investigate fellowships provided by their governments or other local sponsors. All students admitted to the PhD program are supported by one of the above internal or external sources. Funding is guaranteed for all PhD candidates in good standing until completion of the thesis defense.

The Ward J. MacNeal Educational and Scientific Memorial Trust Distinguished Dissertation Award is given to a Microbiology and Immunology PhD graduate trainee from a pool of nominees each academic year.

Our graduated students defended innovative and rigorous dissertations. See who they are, what they did and where there are now.

During the first year as a member of Program in Biomedical Sciences (PIBS), students participate in brief research projects by rotating in up to four laboratories with approximately two-month rotations during the PIBS year. Laboratories for the rotation period are selected by the student in consultation with faculty members. Such research experiences provide exposure and training in the diverse research interests of our faculty and have proven valuable to students in their selection of a thesis research advisor after the first year. Beginning in the second year, students have the opportunity to develop their teaching abilities by contributing to instructional Medical School courses offered by our department.

As a vital part of graduate training, students refine communicative skills by presenting discussions of research literature in a weekly seminar course, Microbiology 812. Additionally, numerous journal clubs are organized by students and faculty around special topics, including molecular pathogenesis, virology, and immunology. Graduate students also meet regularly to discuss their research activities amongst themselves in an informal, relaxed setting. These activities are complemented by frequent departmental colloquia presented by recognized scientists from leading research institutions around the nation. Students are encouraged to participate in OMIS (Organization of Microbiology and Immunology Students), which sponsors events such as the annual department picnic, as well as holding regular meetings to discuss student issues within the department.

Meet current doctoral students in the University of Michigan Medical School Department of Microbiology and Immunology PhD program.

Students complete a two-step evaluation within two years of matriculation. The first checkpoint is an oral examination that occurs after the first year of classes to test mastery of coursework and analytical thinking. The students are examined on their broad and specific knowledge of three assigned papers. In addition, students will use one of the three papers as a platform to propose future experiments in outline form, which will be discussed during the exam.

The second checkpoint occurs in the second year of study and requires the student to write a six-page proposal of future work on the topic of their thesis research. During the student's first committee meeting, the committee will evaluate the student's knowledge of the literature and methodology relevant to this thesis proposal. PhD candidacy is achieved by successfully completing the formal course work and the two checkpoints.

The research experiences of students are expected to lead to productive scholarship in the form of peer-reviewed journal publications and conference presentations. Degree candidates will meet annually with their faculty committee to ensure satisfactory progress towards completion of the thesis project; first author publication of a primary research article is required for graduation. Students will receive constructive evaluations from the committee members after each committee meeting.

The PhD degree is granted upon completion of a scholarly body of work, submission of a written thesis and presentation of an oral defense based on the student's original, independent research. This program is designed to require approximately five years for completion, and graduates of our department have gone on to pursue outstanding postdoctoral positions and scientific careers.

Two Creighton students awarded prestigious Fulbright scholarships

news default image

Two Creighton students have been named 2024 Fulbright scholars. Benjamin Kinkor and Kate Hessman have been awarded scholarships for the 2024-2025 academic year through the Fulbright U.S. Student Program.

The Fulbright Program is the U.S. government’s flagship international education exchange program. After a highly competitive selection process, winners study, conduct research and/or teach abroad for a year.

Benjamin Kinkor

phd scholarships in medical microbiology

Kinkor is a Des Moines, Iowa native, who will graduate this May with majors in biology and Spanish/Hispanic studies . During his Fulbright year, Kinkor will be an English teaching assistant at an Ecuadorian university.

He says, “This chance to live in another place, learn from the people there and support those who are learning English is an incredible opportunity. Selfishly as a Biology major, all the outdoor opportunities Ecuador provides are very exciting as well!”

Striving toward a future in the medical field, Kinkor notes, “cross-cultural exchange and understanding is paramount in providing the best care for every type of person and situation. By having this year abroad, I hope that my communication skills and intentionality in interacting with people from backgrounds different from my own will be strengthened significantly.”

“ Samantha Senda-Cook, PhD , Ryan Spangler, PhD , and Carin Appleget, PhD were all paramount in empowering me to apply for the award and in encouraging me to take the time needed to express myself coherently in the application process,” says Kinkor. “Creighton's enriching cross-cultural opportunities, such as the Encuentro Dominicano Program and the Schlegel Center for Service and Justice , have both influenced my life irrevocably. I feel humbled and honored to have been a part of such a great community.”

Kate Hessman

phd scholarships in medical microbiology

Hessman is a senior psychology major and business minor from Cedar Rapids, Iowa. During her Fulbright year, Hessman will be an English teaching assistant within a local secondary school in the Czech Republic. Additionally, she will work within the community through supplementary projects to further explore the local culture and lifestyle.

“I believe cultural immersion thrives off of the ability to form connections with others,” says Hessman. “I am looking forward to creating relationships with those in the Czech Republic and the opportunity to live abroad.”

When looking to her future career plans, Hessman believes this experience will further develop her social relationships and cultural applications. “My hope is that my time working within the Czech Republic will broaden my perspective and challenge me to understand the world more deeply.”

Hessman says this opportunity came to fruition thanks to the guidance of Creighton faculty members throughout the application process. “I strongly believe that your success is a reflection of the people who help you to get there and for me Creighton is that mirroring image.”

A group of doctorate of physical therapy candidates outside of the Medical Education Center.

The Doctor of Physical Therapy (D.P.T.) Class of 2026 celebrated a pivotal moment in their academic journey during the White Coat Ceremony in the John W. Nevins, M.D. '44 Auditorium on April 15. Among an audience comprising friends, family, faculty, and School of Health Sciences and Practice (SHSP) leadership, 58 students embraced their commitment to the field of physical therapy as they marked the transition to the clinical phase of their education.

Students gathered for photographs and conversations, clutching their pristine white coats, as they looked forward to their next two years of clinicals. Janet P. Dolot, M.S., D.P.T., Dr.P.H. '14, PT, OCS, professor, program director, and chief of the Division of Physical Therapy, set the tone by introducing Rabbi Baruch Fogel, M.A., of Touro University, for the invocation, followed by inspiring words for the students as they take this next leap in their educational journey. "Donning the white coat serves to remind wearers of their professional duty to practice with honor, caring, and a patient-centered approach," she said.   Edward C. Halperin, M.D., M.A., chancellor and chief executive officer, joined the ceremony remotely to share insights gained from his career, advising students to approach their roles with humility and a commitment to action in the face of challenges. He recommended, "I recommend to you that you don the white coat with humility and an intention to take action."   Ben F. Johnson, Ed.D., vice dean of the SHSP, expressed excitement about witnessing the students' journey towards fulfilling their aspirations in the field of physical therapy. "We look forward to watching you live out your dream as you move on toward the finish line of becoming a D.P.T.," he said.   Addressing the students, Catherine Curtis, PT, EdD, assistant professor of physical therapy, offered words of encouragement, urging students to trust the process, and let their passion guide them as they navigate their professional paths. "As you embark on your first clinical and future professional life, you may feel daunted by the expectations to kick out all you’ve crammed into your head," she said. "Don’t be afraid, trust the process. You have everything it takes. Let your heart guide you. Your head and hands will find a way."   Alumnus keynote speaker Jonathan Filipe, D.P.T. '16, head athletic trainer of the Brooklyn Nets and sports and orthopedic clinical specialist, delivered an empowering message, highlighting the inevitable challenges ahead while emphasizing the profound impact they will have on countless individuals throughout their careers. "These next two years, you will find many shortcomings because every profession has them," he said. "Don’t fall into the trap of letting those shortcomings override the importance and impact you’ll have on thousands of people throughout your career."   The highlight of the ceremony came as students were called forward to don their white coats, symbolizing their transition into the clinical realm. With assistance from D.P.T. faculty members, they proudly adorned their new attire before reciting the Pledge for Physical Therapy from the American Physical Therapy Association Education Section 2004, reaffirming their dedication to their chosen profession.

Videos of the D.P.T. White Coat Ceremony and other ceremonies are available on the NYMC Youtube Channel .

Michael Ryan, MD, and Colleagues Receive Ilene B. Harris Legacy Research Fund Award

April 16, 2024 by [email protected]

Michael Ryan

Michael Ryan, MD, MEHP

Michael Ryan, MD, MEHP, director of the School of Medicine Center for Excellence in Education, associate dean for assessment, evaluation and scholarship, and professor of pediatrics, received the Ilene B. Harris Legacy Research Fund award for medical education scholarship.

Dr. Ryan will serve as co-principal investigator for a multi-institutional, one-year study, starting July 1, 2024, that will use focused ethnography to explore competency decisions in medical school. Dr. Ryan’s research project was the only research project funded out of 35 grant proposals submitted.

The goal of Dr. Ryan’s project is to produce an ethnographic description of the approaches used by six innovative medical schools to render consensus-based competency judgements on medical students. This work will help support Dr. Ryan’s PhD dissertation related to competency-based decisions in the medical student population and will aim to inform future study and innovation to further advance competency-based medical education across the continuum of training.

Dr. Ryan and Alexandra Vinson, PhD, from the University of Michigan, will serve as co-PIs for the study. Additional team members include:

  • Elizabeth Bradley, PhD, and Andrew Parsons, MD, University of Virginia
  • Sally Santen, MD, PhD; Matthew Kelleher, MD, MEd; and Dan Schumacher, MD, MEd, PhD, University of Cincinnati
  • Rachel Stork Poeppleman, MD, MHPE, University of Minnesota
  • Anita Shelgikar, MD, MHPE, University of Michigan
  • Christina Vitto, MD, Virginia Commonwealth University
  • Logan Jones, MD, Oregon Health & Science University
  • Plilar Ortega, MD, MGM, Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education
  • Pim Teunissen, MD, PhD, Maastricht University (Netherlands)

The goal of the Ilene B. Harris Legacy Research Fund, administered by the University of Illinois Chicago, is to further the mission of medical education by supporting health professions education research projects that address important problems or questions in health professions in ways that advance innovation and/or methodological approaches.

Congratulations to Dr. Ryan and his colleagues for their outstanding work in medical education.

Gamecocks in Germany: six USC students awarded DAAD scholarships

DAAD scholarship winners

Molly Conway, Shannon DePratter, Parker Huggins, Shruti Jadhav, Vansh Nagpal and Lydia Pless have been awarded scholarships from DAAD, the German Academic Exchange Service. This is the largest cohort of University of South Carolina students ever to earn DAAD funding for summer research and internships in Germany. Conway, Huggins and Nagpal received the DAAD RISE scholarship for undergraduate research, while DePratter, Jadhav and Pless will participate in the DAAD RISE Professional program for graduate-level students or DAAD RISE alumni.

Why it matters

These programs combine cutting-edge STEM research, mentorship and study abroad experience to connect students with an international network of experts in their fields. Participants can choose from projects in a variety of STEM disciplines to bolster their research skills.

What it offers

DAAD RISE provides opportunities for STEM students to research with Ph.D. students at top German universities. DAAD RISE Professional participants may also be placed at industry-related research institutions. Students receive a monthly stipend for their contributions, as well as health insurance and a travel allowance.

Who they are

All recipients are South Carolina Honors College students or alumni.

Molly Conway

Molly Conway is a junior McNair scholar majoring in biochemistry and molecular biology. Conway will spend the summer in Erlangen researching the sphingolipid metabolism in the central nervous system and its effect on neuropathic disorders such as depression. In addition to research, Conway looks forward to connecting with other DAAD RISE recipients. She plans to continue her research and pursue a Ph.D. in molecular biology or neurobiology.

Shannon DePratter

Senior biomedical engineering major and 2023 Goldwater Scholar Shannon DePratter will intern at Bayer Pharmaceuticals in Cologne. After graduating this spring, the DAAD RISE Professional program will allow her to fulfill her dream of studying abroad while gaining insight into her future career field, neuropharmaceutical research. Following her summer in Germany, DePratter will return to USC to earn a master’s degree in biomedical engineering.

Parker Huggins

Carolina Scholar Parker Huggins is a junior electrical engineering major. He participated in the Natural Hazards Engineering Research Infrastructure Research Experience for Undergraduates last year and will spend this summer working at the Microwaves and Radar Institute of the German Aerospace Center. His project will focus on novel multi-static synthetic aperture radar techniques for drone-based remote sensing. After graduation, Huggins plans to begin a Ph.D. program in telecommunications engineering.

Shruti Jadhav

Shruti Jadhav was named the 2023 USC Outstanding Senior Aerospace Engineer and is currently earning a master’s degree in aerospace engineering. A 2023 Honors graduate, Jadhav received a DAAD RISE scholarship in 2022 and is returning to Germany as a DAAD RISE Professional. This summer, she will work at the Germany Aerospace Center in Göttingen to analyze and process TSP images from wind tunnel testing. She will continue her master’s studies at USC this fall.

Lydia Pless

Stamps scholar Lydia Pless will earn a degree in biochemistry and molecular biology this spring. Pless was honored with the Betty F. Fundenberg Undergraduate Biomedical Research award in 2023 for her work in the Truex biochemistry lab. As a DAAD RISE Professional in Munich, she will engage in microbiology research. Following her experience abroad, Pless plans to attend medical school.

Vansh Nagpal

Vansh Nagpal is a junior computer science and mathematics major. He is also the current president of USC’s Minorities in Computing organization. The DAAD RISE scholarship will take him to Hochschule Dusseldorf, University of Applied Sciences to research the use of machine learning and different sensor calibrations for the study of autonomous vehicles. Nagpal aspires to earn a Ph.D. in computer science and pursue a career in data science or machine learning.

National Fellowships and Scholar Programs provides support for DAAD RISE and DAAD RISE Professional applicants. Students interested in learning more should contact USC’s national fellowships team .
