Statement by the President on International Youth Day

Today, on International Youth Day, we celebrate the potential and power of young people to shape the future of our increasingly interconnected world. With over half of the global population under the age of 30, young generations will find the solutions to some of our toughest global challenges.

The United States is committed to providing opportunity for young people to ensure they are not only the leaders of tomorrow, but also change agents today.  Whether it is ensuring boys and girls have equal access to education, building skills to strengthen youth leadership in civil society, business and academia, or providing a young entrepreneur with the capital and network to grow a start-up, we are investing in the potential of the next generation.  Through our Young Leaders Initiatives, nearly half a million young people are working together to learn from one another and effect change in their communities.

Youth are often the voices at the forefront of advocating for societies to advance and improve, whether on issues of human rights, technology, climate change, or healthcare. From the activist in Nigeria fighting for disability rights, to the human rights advocate in Egypt defending the fundamental freedoms of all Egyptians to speech, assembly, and association, and the Paraguayan manufacturing low cost prosthetics, young people see a world of endless possibility and are not waiting to take action to do what is right.

Today, we commemorate the energetic spirit of young people worldwide and their ability to improve the future of humanity.

Youth Day: President Paul Biya encourages self employment

president speech on youth day

By Eratus Ndueh

The President of the Republic of Cameroon Paul Biya has urged young Cameroonians to venture more into self-employed activities because it constitutes one of the best paths to socio-professional integration, given the impossibility for the State and the private sector to absorb the ever-increasing volume of young people who arrive on the market each year, seeking for employment.

He was speaking on the eve of the celebration of the 58th edition of National Youth Day, on Saturday February 10, 2024 at 8 p.m.

The president in his speech saluted various bodies putting in efforts to facilitate the Social Integration of young people.

“I would like to take this opportunity to salute the action of the various bodies set up to facilitate the social integration of young people. This is the case of the National Youth Council, which currently has 14,000 youth organizations and decentralized structures. This is also the case for Municipal Councils and Regional Youth Councils. They made it possible to voluntarily engage nearly eight thousand young people in learning the management of public affairs and the development projects of their grassroots communities.” said president Paul Biya.

He added that, “The Three-Year Special Youth Plan, launched in 2016, is part of this logic. It has already made it possible to finance thousands of projects for young people. In the same vein, the Entrepreneurship Promotion Program contributed to the creation of more than 12,000 new businesses in 2023. These generated nearly 22,000 direct jobs.”

While regrating that the progress is certainly not encouraging. But, is well aware, they remain insufficient compared to the number of young people who are looking for job.

With so much love in his heart for young Cameroonians, the president also encouraged the youths to grab learning opportunities so as to be able to be integrated.

“In addition to the entry into service of the brand new National Center for Training of Trainers and Program Development, I am pleased to note that of the Professional Information and Orientation Centers in Maroua, Ngaoundéré, Yaoundé, Douala, Bamenda and Bafoussam. From now on, young people looking for job will be able to learn about the various opportunities offered by the job market” he further expounded.

The president also announced that school fees in Vocational Training colleges have been reduced from CFA 500k to 50k, with the aim of allowing as many young people as possible to access quality training.

However, He said that our youth cannot take full advantage of the opportunities offered to them if they do not fully embrace the civic and moral values which are the basis of life in society.

While appealing to parents and more generally to all educators, to fully assume their responsibilities. Despite the inexorable evolution of mentalities and behaviors, they must not give up and must continue to educate and mentor the youth. They must continue to instill in young people the values necessary for a successful journey through the trials of life.

President Hichilema re-assures Zambian youths

Vice President Mutale Nalumango

President Hakainde Hichilema has assured the youths in Zambia that the government is committed to providing substantial spaces of full youth participation in the country’s socio and economic, as well as leadership endeavours.

President Hichilema noted that young people voted for change in the August 2021 elections which the government is determined to deliver to them.

The Head of State said this in Lusaka today in a speech delivered for him by Vice President Mutale Nalumango during the 2022 Youth Indaba held under the theme “increasing youth participation in all levels of national development” ahead of this year’s youth day celebrations.

He explained that the new dawn government will deliver all promises made to the youths.

President Hichilema further revealed that the government will revise the existing National Youth Policy of 2015 and its implementation plan so that it reflects the country’s socio-economic transformation agenda of having a prosperous Zambia with equal opportunities across ethnic, religious and gender considerations in a free democratic society.

The Head of State said this is consistent with the drive of attaining Zambia’s Vision 2030 agenda and leaving no one behind.

He also revealed that the government is in the process of developing a National Youth Development Strategy that will provide further guidance towards youth empowerment.

President Hichilema explained that the strategy will ensure integrated and coordinated mechanisms, a comprehensive programme strategy, inclusive processes and promote bottom-up youth empowerment programmes among other youth empowerment programmes.

“Government, with support from United Nations Agencies, both bilateral and multilateral companies, civil society organisations and the private sector will be placing youth volunteers and interns in strategic sectors of the economy to enhance service delivery especially to the youth,” he said.

The Head of State added that the strategy is expected to create over two million job opportunities to the youths of Zambia over the foreseeable future.

The President has since urged the youth to aggressively seek out and explore the many opportunities that the government is putting in place for them.

And Mr. Hichilema has urged citizens to observe and enforce the national values and principals and make Zambia a better place.

Tomorrow, the President will deliver a speech on the progress the government has made in implementing national values and principals in Parliament.

Speaking at the same event, United Nations Resident Coordinator, Coumba Mar Gadio, reaffirmed the UN’s support to the government in advancing its national priority of enhancing youth participation that creates a transformational impact for in-country Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) acceleration.

Ms. Mar Gadio noted that the UN has mobilized millions of Kwacha to support the government to operationalise and implement its youth development strategy roadmap.

And Minister of Youth, Sport and Art, Elvis Nkandu revealed that the Indaba has attracted over 700 youths drawn from all the 156 parliamentary constituencies in Zambia.

Mr. Nkandu said youths play a vital role in the development of any nation.

He said his ministry will continue to offer empowerment programmes to uplift the lives of young people in the country.

Mr. Nkandu further disclosed that his ministry has made tremendous improvement in persuading youths to pay back the loans obtained for various initiatives and has so far recovered K20 million.

Chief Editor

Few months in office and you are already doing control damage moves like reassuring. A sign of lack of capacity to deliver. We warned the disgruntled youth, they didn’t listen. Astrict father who tries to prepare you for the tough world is better than one who showers you with lies and false hopes

In PF the only youths who benefited were PF cadres. If you are not a PF cadre then no empowerment and benefit for you. Some cadres were not true lovers of PF, in fact some PF cadres voted against PF because all they wanted was money at that time but then voted for the best Party to the Country. Hate me or Love me, I go…………

President Cyril Ramaphosa: Youth Day

Keynote address by president cyril ramaphosa on youth day, mthatha, eastern cape.

Programme Director, Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture, Mr Nathi Mthethwa, Minister of Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities, Ms Maite Nkoana Mashabane, Premier of the Eastern Cape, Mr Oscar Mabuyane, Executive Chairperson of the NYDA, Ms Asanda Luwaca, CEO of the Harambee Youth Employment Accelerator, Ms Kasthuri Soni, CEO of the Youth Employment Service, Mr Ravi Naidoo, Leaders of all youth formations, Young people of South Africa,

We are here today to honour the youth of 1976 – and the youth of all decades – whose bravery, determination and vision were vital to the achievement of our democracy.

From their struggles, we have learnt that there is nothing that young people cannot achieve when they are united and committed.

It is due to the struggles of young people over many years that access to primary education is universal for every single young person.

Our school feeding schemes have ensured that no child is hungry at school.

Today, our country produces four times the number of African graduates than we did in 1994.

These graduates have gone on to become leading doctors, technologists, innovators and entrepreneurs.

Our social security system offers a level of basic social protection to every marginalised and vulnerable citizen, especially children.

These achievements should not overshadow the deep seated challenges faced by young people.

Now more than ever, we need young people to rally together to confront and overcome the massive challenges facing our country.

The apartheid legacy of poverty, unemployment and inequality has, in recent times, been compounded by the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, the July 2021 unrest and the devastating floods in KwaZulu-Natal, North West and here in the Eastern Cape.

The fact that millions of young people are not in employment, education or training is the greatest challenge facing our country today.

As we rebuild from the pandemic, we therefore remain focused on growing our economy and creating jobs.

We remain focused on far-reaching economic reforms and creating conditions for the expansion of businesses throughout the country.

We are intensifying our investment drive and removing the red tape that holds back business growth and greater employment creation.

Alongside these measures, we are harnessing the capacity of the state to respond to the immediate needs of young people.

It is for this reason that we announced the Presidential Youth Employment Intervention, which is a comprehensive response to the youth unemployment challenge.

We have also launched the Presidential Employment Stimulus, which supports public and social employment, and which has created close on 880,000 job opportunities since it was established.

A flagship initiative of the employment stimulus is the school assistants programme, which has placed 287,000 young people in schools across the country.

These young people are accessing meaningful employment while supporting teachers and contributing to positive learning outcomes in our schools.

The latest programme to be launched through the employment stimulus is the Social Employment Fund.

It has begun to recruit 50,000 participants in community safety, food and nutrition, digital inclusion, and sports, arts and recreation.

We have just launched a new dashboard for the Presidential Youth Employment Intervention on the State of the Nation website.

Members of the public are now able to track detailed progress with implementation and receive up-to-date information about the intervention.

Our National Pathway Management Network, which links young people to opportunities for earning, learning and support, has now signed up over 2.9 million users.

Young people can join the network through an online platform, SAYouth.mobi, which is data free on all mobile networks.

Since SA Youth was launched, it has placed more than 600,000 young people in earning opportunities and provided support to many more, including interview preparation, job search and entrepreneurship training.

As part of government’s commitment to remove the barriers that young people confront when trying to enter the public service, we are reducing the cost and effort of applying for positions.

For example, applicants for public service positions are no longer required to submit certified copies of their educational qualifications and other relevant documents.

This simple change will significantly reduce the cost of applying, improve turnaround times and reduce the administrative burden on departments.

At the beginning of next month, government will be launching the Future of Work Ambassadors programme.

This programme will focus on improving and modernising the recruitment and retention of youth in the public service.

We are pursuing innovative new ways of linking learning with earning.

For example, the National Skills Fund is pioneering the pay-for-performance skills development model that will create 8,000 job opportunities for young people in digital skills.

Today, we are proud to announce the official launch of the revitalised National Youth Service.

Youth service can contribute to civic responsibility, a common identity, development and nation building.

This is a passionate generation that sees the need in our country and wants to serve those around them.

There is a great deal of work for them to do in public schools, in tackling social problems such as alcohol and substance abuse and gender based violence, and in building social solidarity in their communities.

We look to the National Youth Service to inculcate in young people the habits of work, the value of community service and a sense of duty to our democracy.

Young people who want to participate in the National Youth Service should join SAYouth.mobi and create their profile.

The Youth Employment Service – known as YES – is another important initiative that has reached key milestones over the last year.

Through its partnerships with the private sector, YES has created nearly 82,000 quality work opportunities for young South Africans.

This has injected over R4.6 billion into the economy through salaries alone.

Corporate partners use the Youth Employment Service to build their own workforces by creating work experiences for youth in industries of the future.

These include industries such digital, drones, green economy, urban farming, mining, global business services, creative industries and many more.

The young people of South Africa are imbued with a great entrepreneurial spirit and energy.

Our task is to support them to unleash their potential.

The Department of Trade, Industry and Competition, for example, is establishing a fund that will support an enabling ecosystem for young people to engage in forms of enterprise and self-employment.

We will continue to provide young entrepreneurs with the capital and networks to grow their start-up businesses.

In the past financial year, 7,500 young people have received financial enterprise support and over 30,000 young people have received other enterprise support from the National Youth Development Agency and the Department of Small Business Development.

At this moment in the life of our nation, we need visionary young people who are united and focused on improving our communities and building our economy.

We need young people who have discovered their generational mission and who are determined never to betray it.

We need patriotic young people who will actively serve their country and defend the gains of our hard-won democracy.

We need young people who will stand up to, and put an end to, gender based violence and femicide.

Our young people need to take the lead in building a more humane society – a society that treats people with disabilities with dignity.

We are deeply concerned about the number of young people falling into depression and taking their own lives.

Now more than ever, we need youth to show ubuntu and kindness towards their peers.

Bullying at school or anywhere else in our society must stop.

The harassment of young people belonging to the LGBTQI+ community has no place in our country.

Young people must shun crime and fight against corruption.

I also want to address a special generation of young people popularly known as Ma2000.

This generation is the future of our country.

These are the young people who take responsibility for their well-being and the well-being of those around them.

These are the young people who understand the damage caused by alcohol and drug abuse, who refuse to be drawn into crime and violence, and who avoid irresponsible and reckless sexual behaviour.

Young people must be inspired by the 1976 generation to look beyond their immediate circumstances and pursue their hopes and dreams.

They must create livelihoods by pursuing their business ideas, focusing on their studies and always looking for opportunities for development.

As a society, we must appreciate the contribution of young people, invest in their development and support their efforts to define a new future for our country.

I wish you all a happy and fulfilling Youth Day.

I thank you.

UN chief’s Youth Day message: People of all ages need to ‘join forces’ for a better world

Young people attend a youth summit in Jamaica.

International Youth Day celebrates “the power of partnerships across generations,” the UN chief said in his message for the day.

Commemorated annually on 12 August, Secretary-General António Guterres noted that this year’s theme – “Intergenerational Solidarity: Creating a World for All Ages” – reminds us of “a basic truth” that “w e need people of all ages, young and old alike, to join forces to build a better world for all ”.

Happy International #YouthDay to all young people everywhere 🥳Today & every day, let’s celebrate young people’s role as powerful advocates for fundamental transformation & as active agents of change 💪It’s time for young people to #BeSeenBeHeard 🙌 https://t.co/VXOEemRh6Q UN Youth Envoy UNYouthEnvoy

Intergenerational Solidarity

Too often, ageism, bias and discrimination prevent this essential collaboration, the top UN official observed.

“When young people are shut out of the decisions being made about their lives, or when older people are denied a chance to be heard, we all lose,” he spelled out.

Mr. Guterres upheld that as the world faces a series of challenges threatening our collective future, “solidarity and collaboration are more essential than ever”.

From COVID-19 to climate change and conflicts to poverty, inequality and discrimination, “we need all hands on deck” to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and build the better, more peaceful future that everyone seeks.

Bolster youth

We need to support young people with massive investments in education and skills-building — “including through next month’s Transforming Education Summit ,” said the Secretary-General.

“We also need to support gender equality and expanded opportunities for young people to participate in civic and political life”.

The UN chief maintained that it is not enough to just listen to young people, “we need to integrate them into decision-making mechanisms at the local, national and international levels”.

This is at the heart of the UN’s proposal to establish a new Youth Office at the Organization.

  Joining hands

At the same time, he pointed to the importance of ensuring that older generations have access to social protection and opportunities to give back to their communities as well as the ability to share the decades of accumulated experience that they have lived.

“On this important day, let’s join hands across generations to break down barriers , and work as one to achieve a more equitable, just and inclusive world for all people,” concluded the Secretary-General.

'Youthful drive' needed

Meanwhile, in his lecture to the students of Nazarbayev University in Kazakhstan, General Assembly President Abdulla Shahid reflected on the importance of intergenerational collaboration, conceding that “it is often young people who hold us accountable when we fall short on any issue, whether it be conservation, peace, or human rights”.

As we face a full-fledged planetary crisis with countries locking themselves into “unreasonable positions” during negotiations, he reminded, “it is the young that are stepping up through their activism”.

“It is young people that kept the 1.5-degree goal alive”, he said. “It is young people who refuse our excuses when we, even in the face of overwhelming evidence, delay and dither on taking action to curb emissions and protect the environment”.

Mr. Shahid confirmed that the world needs “that youthful drive and energy” today.

"Let's give a warm welcome to all of the kids and parents who have come out today for Youth Day!

I'm so glad you're here. I know that things can be hard sometimes and that it can feel like you're never going to make it through but let me tell you: you deserve to be here. You deserve to be happy. You deserve to feel supported by your community. And we are here to support you!

Whether you're a kid or a parent, I hope that this day gives us all an opportunity to reflect on our lives and how far we've come—and to think about how much farther we still have left to go before we reach our full potential as individuals and as members of a community.

Our theme for today is 'growth,' so let's all take some time together to reflect on what growth means for each of us individually as well as collectively as a group."

Sample #6

"I want to take the time to welcome you all to our celebration of Youth Day. It is a day when we recognize the importance of our young people and their place in the world, and I hope that you all can celebrate it with your friends and family.

It's important to remember that while you're all here, this is not only about you—it's also about us! The older generation has so much to learn from you, and we hope that today can be an opportunity for us all to learn from each other.

One thing I've learned from working with youth is that they have an incredible ability to see things clearly—they do not always have the same biases or assumptions some adults do. We also need the youth for our society to move forward—they are the ones who will carry on our values as time goes on.

So today, let's take a moment for ourselves and think about what we'd like our future selves or children's future selves to look like: How do we want them to grow up? How does this reflect the values of our community? And then let's think about how we can help make those dreams a reality!"

Sample #7

"Welcome, everyone! For the youth of our church, we want to make sure that you have a safe place to grow and explore your faith.

Today we'll be talking about topics like:

  • How do we talk to others about our faith? What are some ways to share our beliefs with others to make sense to them?
  • How do we deal with peer pressure? How do we deal with the media?
  • How can we strengthen our relationships with each other?
  • How do we know when something is right or wrong?

And more! We'll also have live music, games, food, and fun giveaways!"

Sample #8

"We know that Youth Day is a time for youth to come together and celebrate the future. We also know that it's important for us to take time out of our busy lives to be with each other, and that's why we've made this day so special.

Today is all about celebrating who you are and what you have achieved so far. We hope you'll stick around after the ceremony—we've got some great snacks waiting for you!"

Proclamation—education and sharing day, usa, 2024.

By the President of the United States of America A Proclamation

This Education and Sharing Day, USA, we remember the life and legacy of the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, as the leader of the Chabad-Lubavitch movement and recommit to our shared values of honesty, dignity, and equal justice that he long championed and that have made America strong.

Forced to flee Nazi-occupied Europe during one of history's darkest moments, the Rebbe found a new home and purpose in America. In the wake of the Holocaust, he led hundreds of thousands to deepen their faith. As a prolific scholar and teacher, his calls for new schools and community centers inspired people to build them in all 50 States and across the globe, and they moved generations to embrace education not only as a means of self-improvement but as an essential path to a more just society. Here in America, he also offered counsel to some of my predecessors as President, always advocating for our Nation's role as a beacon of hope in the world.

We honor the Rebbe's birthday every year, but we know this year is different. Violence and cruelty have reminded us that hate never goes away -- it only hides. Silence is complicity, and America will not be silent. As Americans, we reject terrorism and will keep working unequivocally to combat antisemitism at every turn. My Administration remains dedicated to Israel's security, and here at home, we have been implementing America's first-ever National Strategy to Counter Antisemitism. We will give hate no safe harbor.

The Rebbe knew that education is fundamental to cultivating understanding and acceptance. It opens us up to one another, and it builds not just knowledge but character, as well as an awareness of something bigger than ourselves. The Rebbe's beliefs are reflected in the American creed that every person is created equal and deserves to be treated equally throughout their lives, starting with access to a quality education -- a mission my Administration shares.

As we approach the 30th anniversary of the Rebbe's passing, we honor his work by celebrating our common faith in our Nation and by working to ensure that every American has a chance to learn, grow, and thrive -- in the classroom and as caring and courageous people.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, JOSEPH R. BIDEN JR., President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim April 19, 2024, as Education and Sharing Day, USA. I call upon government officials, educators, volunteers, and all the people of the United States to observe this day with appropriate programs, ceremonies, and activities.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this eighteenth day of April, in the year of our Lord two thousand twenty-four, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and forty-eighth.

The Head of State addresses the youths

The Head of State addresses the youths

The President of the Republic has assured the youth about the progress of the country and the continuous efforts of the Government to provide jobs and other opportunities that will provide them with better living conditions. In the traditional Youth Day speech, President Paul BIYA also called on the youths to emulate the example of those who fought for the independence and reunification of the country so that future generations can have enough food to eat, live in decent houses and have access to good medical attention.

HEAD OF STATE’S MESSAGE TO THE YOUTH ON THE OCCASION OF THE 48TH EDITION OF THE NATIONAL YOUTH DAY

My dear young compatriots,

Last year, under the same circumstances, I told you that I was aware of your doubts and worries about an uncertain future. But I added that we had reason to hope and that, to me, the country’s prospects seemed brighter.

Recent trends in employment statistics seem to bear me out.

The 2013 forecasts for new jobs stood at 200 000. The number of jobs actually created was about 12% higher, reaching nearly 225 000. Private enterprises in various sectors, alone, provided 165 000 jobs. For its part, the Administration, through its different branches, provided 60 000 jobs.

Higher targets have been set for 2014. With the possible increase in the country’s growth rate, we hope to create more than 250 000 new jobs. Of course, this will not benefit only the youth. However, one can surmise that they will be the main beneficiaries.

This vision stems from a logical analysis of the situation of our economy which is expected to grow by about 5% in the coming months. In this regard, I expressed my view a few weeks ago. I still believe that we can do better. I am strongly convinced that we will.

My dear young compatriots,

In this race for growth which, in 20 years, should set our country on the path to economic emergence, you have a vital role, a crucial role to play.

In the coming years, who will build our:

-major energy, agricultural and industrial projects;

-road, port and aviation infrastructure;

-water supply and electricity distribution works;

-thousands of low-cost houses;

-hospitals and health centres;

-primary and secondary schools and universities?

You, of course, my dear compatriots.

Therefore, you should right now start preparing yourselves seriously for this task, whether in primary school, secondary school or university. We need and will need thousands of skilled workers, qualified technicians, excellent engineers, competent accountants and salespersons, and so on. Our educational system at its different levels had already opted for professionalization. We will soon witness its impact, which you will find remarkable.

Those who have already entered the work force and who are practising the trades learned “on the job” will need more training opportunities. As we expect a revival of our economy, we should be capable of meeting the demand for many specialists in various trades. We can no longer be content with supplying mere labourers, leaving the best jobs to others. Such better-trained professionals will join the ranks of craftsmen who are in high demand.

Last year, using the example of motorcycle taxi riders who play an obvious social role, I underscored the need to organize this profession. I am pleased to note that government services, following consultations with stakeholders, have developed a collective mentoring programme. By so doing, motorcycle taxi riders will be able to participate more - and better - in our national development projects.

This programme involves various aspects of this profession, notably training, management and organization. Perhaps this experiment can be replicated in other informal sector activities.

I equally expressed my concern about the decline in public morality in our country. I deplored the fact that the youth, who are our most valuable asset, our future and the future of our country, have not been spared. I commend Government’s prompt response to this alert through the holding of an international conference on the theme in Yaounde. Its ambitious objective is to “make Cameroon an exemplary country. This objective concerns us all to the utmost level: parents, teachers, religious authorities.

Respect for public morality also means commitment to national integration which is the cement of our Nation. Furthermore, it means attachment to the rules of democracy, a model that we have chosen in order to build a just and cohesive society. This affords me the opportunity to hail the high turnout of the youth in the election of 30 September and the election of some of their peers into the National Assembly and council executives.

I also wish to express my satisfaction with the refocusing of the activities of the National Civic Service for Participation in Development Agency. The new leadership in place should improve the mentoring of the first 6 000 volunteers trained. In this regard, I also wish to recall that in 2013, the Rural and Urban Youth Support Programme with its Youth Socio-economic Integration Project through the Manufacture of Sports Equipment, contributed, through its supervision, to creating 1 000 jobs. These came to add to the 225 000 that I mentioned earlier on.

Regarding the general youth policy, I would like to welcome the election of new executives of the National Youth Council at both the national and local levels. Through these elections, which were conducted satisfactorily, the Cameroonian youth showed that they are part and parcel of our lofty vision which is to make Cameroon an emerging country by 2035. In this respect, the Government has established more than 400 multi-purpose youth promotion centres in subdivisions and divisions. Such mobilization will continue in the months ahead.

As you can see, things are happening in Cameroon. The momentum is building and it is irreversible. You will be its main actors.

Before concluding, I would like all of us to go fifty to sixty years down memory lane. This is History, you may say. Yes, but perhaps we have not learned all the lessons from it.

During that period of turmoil, those who dreamed of independence and national unity were young people like you. They differed in many respects: ideology, party, strategy and tactics. But the goal was clear: FREEDOM. And many engaged in this struggle putting their lives on the line.

Today, the stakes are different. Although the commitment I expect from you does not require you to make the ultimate sacrifice, it is nonetheless crucial. It is about enabling our country to reach a level of development such that every Cameroonian can: live decently on his work, raise his children properly, and have decent housing and protection from disease.

My young compatriots, such is the task before you.

When, in a few weeks, we celebrate the Fiftieth Anniversary of Reunification which complements our Independence, I urge you to spare a thought for those who sacrificed their lives for you to be able to live in a society of freedom and progress.

Happy Youth Day to you all.

Long live Cameroonian youth!

Long live Cameroon!

The White House 1600 Pennsylvania Ave NW Washington, DC 20500

Remarks by President   Biden at a Campaign Event | Philadelphia,   PA

Martin Luther King Jr. Recreation Center Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

1:47 P.M. EDT

THE PRESIDENT:  Thank you.  Please, have a seat if you have one.  (Laughter.) Mom and Dad, I hope you were listening.  (Laughter.)

What an incredible honor.  What an incredible honor.  I don’t want to become emotional, but what an incredible honor to have the support of the Kennedy family. John White Jr., thanks for those kind words and for carrying on your family’s civil rights legacy.  And so is your son Kellan, who — who’s doing a hell of a job on our campaign.  (Applause.)  He’s helping us win Pennsylvania.  (Applause.)

Kerry, I — that was — that was the most meaningful introduction I’ve ever gotten in my life, other than when my sister introduced me.  And I want to thank you for your friendship, well beyond the introduction. It’s an incredible honor to receive the endorsement of your family.  And it means so much to me.

Your mom, Ethel, whom I spoke with on the phone a couple weeks ago — well, I guess, last week — to wish her happy birthday, she’s always been so gracious to my family during the most difficult time of my life.  She’s done so much for the country and the world in her own right.

And, of course, your dad, who I never got to meet — I just missed — he was a senator from Syra- — from New York.  He came up to Syracuse University and spoke, and I waited in line, but I didn’t get a chance to physically meet him.  I never got — but he inspired me.  And his passion and courage inspired my generation.

Like millions of Americans, I remember that night on April 4th, 1968.  I was finishing law school at Syracuse University when we heard Dr. King had been assassinated.  The pain and the outrage sparked riots and despair all across the country, including in my home state of Delaware.

And then we heard a familiar voice I’d listened to many times — your dad, Bobby Kennedy, standing in the back of a truck in Indianapolis asking for peace and quoting one of his favorite Greek poets.  He said, and I quote, “Even in our sleep, our pain, which cannot forget, falls drop by drop upon the heart until, our own despair — in our own despair, against our will, comes wisdom through the awful grace of God.”

I had a hard time to believe that day that there was any wisdom, trying to work out from despair where — where we’d go.

It was even harder to believe just two months later, on June the 5th [6th].  I had just graduated from law school, earned an incredible — and learned about an incredible man, later that night, had been assassinated.  Yet another tragedy in your family and a gigantic tragedy for the country.

Only two political heroes I had growing up were gone within a month of each other — months of each other.

We faced a real inflection point as a nation.

When I returned home to my city of Wilmington, one of the cities — only city since Reconstruction to be occupied by the military, the National Guard, with drawn bayonets on every street corner for nine straight months following Dr. King’s murder.

When I graduated that summer, I went home to take a job at one of the oldest law firms in the state.  But after only a matter of months, I left that law firm and took a job as a public defender because I wanted to be more engaged in the effort.

I went on to run for the county council, for the United States Senate, and then as Vice President of the United States.  I’ve done so in large part because I thought that’s something your dad would have done. I’m not — I’m not exaggerating that.  He’s always been on my mind, been one of my heroes.

Today, I sit behind the Resolute Desk, where President John F. Kennedy once sat.  And as I look from the desk — if you’ve ever taken a tour of the White House, I sit in that desk and I look — in front of the fireplace, to the left is a bust of Martin Luther King and to the right is a bust of your dad.  And I remember to keep — keep looking and remind myself what they would do in tough calls.  (Applause.)

The principles Bobby Kennedy embodied were principles taught by my grandparents and parents around our kitchen table.  And that’s not hyperbole; that’s a fact.  My dad said everyone is entitled to be treated with dignity and respect, no matter what their station — no matter what.

And they thought — I was taught the worst sin of all — I mean this from the bottom of my heart — the worst sin of all was the abuse of power — physical power, economic power, or psycholo- — that was the worst sin of all — abusing power.  (Applause.)

And then we have an obligation to each other: to leave no one behind, to give hate no safe harbor.

It’s up to all of us to preserve and protect the very idea of America.

You know, we’re unique — we’re in unique in America — in world history.  We’re the only nation founded on an idea.  Every other nation in the world is founded on geography, ethnicity, race, religion — except us.  Think about it.  The idea was, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men and women are created equal,” in the image of God, and deserve to be treated equally throughout their lives.  (Applause.)

We’ve never fully lived up to it, but we’ve never walked away from it.  We’ve never walked from it.  And we’re not going to walk away from it now.  (Applause.)

Today, we face another inflection point in history.

The 2024 election is about two fundamentally different visions of — for America.  Donald Trump’s vision is one of anger, hate, revenge, and retribution.  He embraces the insurrectionists of January the 6th.  He’s running on it.  And as mentioned already, he promised to be a dictator on “day one” — his own words.  And he calls for —

AUDIENCE:  Booo —

THE PRESIDENT:  No, he — you know he means it.  And he calls for another “bloodbath” when he loses again.  (Applause.)

Look, your family, the Kennedy family, has endured such violence.  Denying January 6th and whitewashing what happens is absolutely outrageous.

I have a very different view of America, one of hope and optimism, like I hope all of you do — optimism that Bobby Kennedy embodied.

I see an America where we defend democracy, not diminish it.  I see an America where we protect our freedoms, not take them away.  And I see an America where the economy grows from the middle out and the bottom up — and that way, the middle class does well and the poor have a shot — and where healthcare is a right, not a privilege.  (Applause.)

By the way, all the stuff we’ve done so far — we’ve done it, and guess what?  We’ve cut the budget by a lot of money: $172 billion so far.  So, don’t tell me it can’t be done.  (Applause.)

I see a future where the planet — we save the planet — as this guy is busting his neck doing — from climate change, literally — the climate crisis in — in America.

And we’ve got to do something — the idea we send our kids to school teaching them to duck and cover.  Think about that.  The idea, in the United States of America, (inaudible) duck and cover at school.  More kids being killed by gun violence than almost anything else.

Folks, the America we’re building is significantly different.  We’re going to get it done.  And now, it’s time to keep going and not slow down, because there is so much at stake.

Let me close with this.  I know Bobby Kennedy liked Greek poets, and they’re great, but I prefer Irish poets.  (Laughter.)  And that’s not a joke, unfortunately.  (Laughter.)  My colleagues used to always kid me for quoting Irish poets on the floor of the Senate.  They thought I did it because I’m Irish.  That’s not the reason.  They’re the best poets in the world.  (Laughter.)

The one I enjoy particularly is Seamus Heaney.  He wrote a poem called “The Cure at Troy” that reminds me of the courage of Bobby Kennedy, and I mean this from the bottom of my heart.  And it goes like this, one stanza.  It says, “History teaches us do not hope on this side of the grave.  But then, once in a lifetime, that longed-for tidal wave of justice will rise up, and hope and history rhyme.”

In 2024, we have a chance to make hope and history rhyme again.  Are you ready to do that with me?  (Applause.)

Are you ready to move forward, not back?  (Applause.)

Are you ready to choose unity over division, dignity over demolition, and choose truth over lies?  (Applause.)  Are you ready to choose freedom over [and] democracy?  Because that’s America.  (Applause.)

Folks, I’ve been doing this a long — I know I only look like I’m 40, but I’ve been doing this a long time.  (Laughter.)  But I’ve never been more optimistic about our future, and I mean it.

We just have to remember who we are.  We’re the United States of America.  There is nothing — I mean this sincerely.  Think about it.  We’re the only nation in the world — as a student of history, I can say — that’s come out of ever crisis stronger than we went in.

There’s nothing — nothing beyond our capacity when we do it together.

God bless you all.  And may God protect our troops.

Thank you.  (Applause.)

AUDIENCE:  Four more years!  Four more years!  Four more years!
