A law student cover letter is a document a law student submits with their resume to potential employers for internships or employment opportunities within their field of study.

It serves as a personalized introduction and persuasive pitch to potential employers. This letter connects the applicant's qualifications and experiences listed in their resume to the specific position they're applying for, highlighting their suitability for the role. 

It concludes with a call to action, expressing interest for an interview. Moreover, a law student cover letter is a tool for law students to demonstrate their qualifications and enthusiasm aiming to secure an interview and the desired role.

Why Do You Need a Cover Letter as a Law Student?

Cover letters are a key part of any job application, whether you are in law school or not. It is important to include a cover letter unless specified otherwise, especially if you’re applying to multiple law schools . They allow you to demonstrate professionalism and show off your communication and writing skills. 

Cover letters are important for law students; they allow you to discuss important qualifications and experiences that aren’t always included within your resume, such as extracurricular activities . Information you can (and should) include in your cover letter include:

What to Include in Your Law Student Cover Letter

Your cover letter is the first thing an employer will read, so be positive and enthusiastic! While your resume outlines your relevant work experience and education, it doesn’t show off your personality. A cover letter can be a great opportunity to humanize yourself to the employer and make them want you to be a part of their team. 

As a law student, what should you include in your cover letter? Berkeley Law outlines the content you should include in your cover letter : 

  • First Paragraph : Introduce yourself and why you are interested in applying for the position. 
  • Body Paragraphs : This is where you show off all your work experience, research, achievements, qualifications, and other skills that are related to the position you are applying to. Be persuasive but not too showy. Remember to be honest and genuine. 
  • Final Paragraph: To conclude, thank the employer for taking the time to read and consider your application, and leave contact information for a prospective interview. Remain positive and confident that you will get an interview!

While these are just suggestions to help you get started and structure your cover letter, you should try to follow this format as closely as you can. 

What NOT to Include in Your Law Student Cover Letter

It is tempting to highlight all of your experiences, but that is not the purpose of a cover letter. Cover letters should be concise and to the point. You should only mention experiences that are relevant to the position you are applying for. 

When deciding which experiences to include, focus on those that you have completed recently. You only have a few short paragraphs to sell yourself to employers, so be sure to avoid accomplishments from over three years ago. 

You also want to avoid being negative, doubtful, or coming across as insecure in your cover letter. 

Formatting Tips for Law Students Cover Letter

Understanding the structure of a cover letter for a law student is essential to create an impressive and effective application for legal internships or job opportunities. Here are some easy to follow tips to help you format your cover letter. 

1. Include a Header

Prior to writing the main sections of your cover letter, review and update your personal information. Make it easily accessible by positioning your contact details in the header section at the top of the letter. 

This includes your full name, email address, phone number, city, state, and date. This ensures the hiring manager can quickly locate your information for interview scheduling.

2. Address the Hiring Manager

Begin your letter with a professional and personalized greeting by addressing the hiring manager by name, incorporating their appropriate title (e.g., Mr. or Ms.). If you don't have their name, conduct online research, as law firms often provide employee information on their websites. 

In cases where you can't find a name, you can use the standard "Dear Hiring Manager" as your greeting.

3. Page Format and Length

When crafting your cover letter, remember to keep it concise, fitting all content onto a single page. Structure it with an introductory paragraph, followed by one to three skill-highlighting paragraphs, and wrap it up with a concluding paragraph. This format ensures that your message is clear and impactful while respecting the reader's time.

4. Margins and Alignment 

Ensure you follow the standard margins , typically one inch on all sides. If you opt for smaller margins, such as around 0.7 inches, make sure to maintain consistency across all sides of the page. 

Additionally, align all paragraphs to the left for a clean and conventional presentation, although some choose to use an indentation for the first line of each paragraph, although this is less common in modern formatting.

5. Use a Suitable Sign-Off

Conclude your cover letter with a professional and balanced tone. It shows your professionalism, which law firms often value in candidates. Consider sign-offs like "Regards," "Sincerely," or "Best Regards." Allow some space after this closing for your name.

Law Student Cover Letter Example

We have some law student cover letter examples below to give you an idea of tone, style, and length. 

Here is an example of a strong cover letter for a first-year law student at Yale University: 

Dear [Employer’s Name]: 
I am a first-year student at Yale Law School seeking a position with Curtis, Mallet-Prevost, Colt & Mosle for Summer 20XX. I am a native New Yorker and hope to work in New York City this coming summer. 
I am interested in your firm because of its international law practice generally and, more particularly, because of your firm’s presence in France and numerous French clients. Your Paris office’s focus in the areas of international commercial arbitration, as well as corporate, banking, and finance work, aligns with my long-term interests in a practice serving international corporations. Having lived and studied in Paris for one year during college and having served as a teaching assistant for French language and literature courses, I am fluent in French and knowledgeable about French culture. My undergraduate majors in International Relations and in Economics provided me with an understanding of many of the complex issues facing businesses with the increase in globalization. I plan to further my understanding of these issues as a member of the Yale Journal of International Law. 
To your firm I will bring proven legal research, writing, and analytical skills that will support your firm and its clients. During my undergraduate education, I served as a member of the University Judiciary Committee, and as a student judge I heard cases, interpreted university codes, and wrote rulings summarizing the Committee’s conclusions. I also drafted a thesis in which I drew from archived primary sources and first-person interviews to write a fifty-page document over the course of a year. Here at Yale, through our first-year writing course this fall, I have streamlined my skills and adapted them to the legal environment. Next semester, I will enroll in YLS’s Advanced Legal Writing course to deepen my understanding and experience.

This is a successful cover letter because the individual outlines specific academic skills and experience that makes them a qualified candidate. Remember, being specific is key to writing a strong cover letter. 

Employers want to read about a couple of examples rather than a general (and usually vague) overview of all your qualifications and experiences. 

For first year law students, you can highlight where you completed your undergrad and your major as you will have most likely just completed this degree. You can also include why you are interested in pursuing a law career. 

For those who are in their second year of law school, here is an example of a good cover letter : 

I am a second-year student at Yale Law School seeking employment with the Food Research and Action Center for the summer. If funding is not available for summer interns, Yale could fund my summer employment. 
FRAC’s mandate to eradicate poverty-related hunger and undernutrition in the United States is compelling to me. I understand that through a combination of research, advocacy, program monitoring, training, collaboration, and public-information campaigns you seek to address the root causes of hunger. As a former nurse who has worked on issues of nutrition and health policy, I am very interested in the work of the Center in the areas of health law and nutrition in maternal and child health. I would greatly value the opportunity to work with and learn from your attorneys, policy analysts, and advocates. 
I have practical work experience in these fields that would be of service to you and your clients. My work as an assistant ombudsperson at a major hospital helped me to understand the importance of nutrition for health and the need for advocacy on behalf of those who cannot effectively advocate for themselves. My experience with the National Health Law program exposed me to the legislative and policy side of health law and the value of legal training in public service. After my first year of law school, I was able to combine my nursing degree and health care experience with my new legal research and writing skills at the Center for Reproductive Law and Policy. This experience has strengthened my interest in grassroots organizing and advocacy of nutrition issues for low income Americans.

Like the first example, this cover letter works so well because it clearly outlines and describes the specific experience of the candidate. As a second year law student, the individual speaks about how their experience relates to their areas of law the student is interested in pursuing, demonstrating that the position the candidate is applying for will help them achieve their career goals.    

These examples are a good starting point to structure your own letter off of, but remember to make your cover letter your own.

Second Paragraph: Show how your background qualifies you for the position. Point out the experience and coursework you have that relates to the employer's field or type of work. Focus on what skills or experiences you would bring to the employer. Emphasize pertinent items on your resume and supplement with other details. Tie experience to tangible, transferable skills. Convince the employer that you would be an asset.   
Third Paragraph: Restate your interest in working for the employer. Have an appropriate closing to pave the way for an interview. Indicate your willingness to interview personally by stating when you will be in the area or by offering to make yourself available at the employer's convenience. A cover letter should only be one page long and broken up into a few short paragraphs for ease of reading. Make sure that you follow typical business correspondence formatting. 

4. How Do You Address a Law School Cover Letter?

Normally, people have addressed cover letters with Mr. or Mrs. [Last name] . However, this may not always be appropriate because you do not know how the individual would like to be addressed. 

Nowadays, people typically address employers with a simple Dear [First and last name] . This is still a personal and respectful way to address someone, and avoids assuming someone’s gender identity and offending them. Yale Law School suggests addressing your cover letter to a specific individual rather than a vague ‘Sir’ or ‘Madam.’

A job posting may give you specific directions on how and who to address your letter to. For example, some job postings explicitly state to address the letter to Human Resources. Always read through the job ad and instructions thoroughly and follow what they ask for. 

5. ​​Can I Use The Same Cover Letter For Multiple Law Schools?

Yes you can use the same cover letter for multiple law schools , it’s an application requirement . However, you may only reuse parts of it. It’s important that you personalize every cover letter you write and tailor it to the school you’re sending it to.

Yes, you need multiple cover letters. You’ll need to personalize each cover letter you write. However you can reuse parts of your cover letter that are generic.

The average recruiter spends six to eight seconds scanning a resume. What do you want your target audience’s key takeaway to be in that brief time?

Your resume is a marketing tool designed to communicate relevant experience and accomplishments to your target audience. A resume is not a biography.

Tailor your resume and cover letter to different audiences, and highlight the information most relevant to that audience. You can find many examples of resumes and cover letters in the Career Handbook for Experienced Professionals.

Resume Guidelines

  • Header: Includes your name, email, phone number, and LinkedIn URL. You do not need a street address. Repeat your name on the header or footer of page 2.
  • Summary: Communicates your core brand and competencies. Define what’s unique and relevant to your target role. It often includes your years of experience and bullet points of your key accomplishments or skills. Limit the summary to 4 lines plus bullet points.
  • Experience: Highlights work experience in reverse chronological order. If career changing, consider organizing bullet points under functional categories ( see sample ). If your company is well known, then no company description is required. If it is not well known, add a one-line description after the company name.
  • Additional Work Experience: Any experience older than 15-20 years or not relevant for the desired role should be listed in another section titled “Additional Work Experience.” In this section, each job should list only the employer and the job title.
  • Education: Follows “Experience” section because we recommend that experienced professionals lead with their professional story. If you are over 50 , consider omitting graduation dates.
  • Additional: Highlights languages, relevant skills, volunteer work, and/or interests.
  • For each job, include size and scope, revenue or budget managed, and number of people on your team.
  • Bullets should focus on results and measurable impacts you’ve had, as well as unique contributions.
  • Be as quantitative as possible: revenue growth, money saved, market share growth, etc.
  • Use strong action verbs .
  • Make the most interesting fact at the beginning of the bullet; it will entice the reader to read the rest. 
  • Maximum of two pages. Remember to put your name and email on the second page of the resume, in case the pages get separated.
  • Left-hand justified as U.S. recruiters scan from left to right.
  • Use bold font to highlight either your company or your title, whichever will be more impactful to your audience.
  • For each job, use 3-4 bullet points of no more than 2 lines each .
  • Minimum 0.70 margins. White space helps people scan.
  • Avoid additional formatting like lines, graphics, and italics — unless they help readability.
  • Use an easy-to-read font such as Calibri or Arial in 11 or 12 point size .

How to Write an Attention-Getting Resume

Your cover letter communicates your interest, qualifications, fit, and value to a prospective employer. In other words: Why do you want me? And, why do I want you? Keep it brief and simple.

Why You Want Me

  • Talk about why you are a match for the job.
  • Highlight relevant skills and experiences as well as demonstrated passion for the sector.
  • Bullet the highlights (no more than 4) for easier reading.

Why I Want You

  • Express clearly why you are drawn to this company and role.
  • Communicate your enthusiasm.
  • Show your interest by working in your knowledge of the company and industry and its products, services, customers, and recent news.

Stanford math-ed prof Jo Boaler’s DEI racket may finally be coming to an end: On Wednesday, a 100-page complaint was filed against her, citing 52 instances of misrepresentation in her research citations.

Boaler, who hauls in a stunning $5,000 an hour for Zoom consultations, was a key figure in getting eighth-grade algebra banned from San Francisco’s public schools in 2014.   

She’s an ideological propagandist rather than a research scholar, with her Stanford webpage declaring in its first sentence her focus on “how equity is promoted in mathematics classroom”; her “research” gave diversity, equity and inclusion hucksters on the city school board the “research-based,” “research-informed” cover they needed to push the ban through.

Indeed, she’s one of the biggest influencers of math education, widely followed and quoted by DEI warriors: When they say “research shows,” they refer to her and her ilk.

Yet the complaint slams her for “reckless disregard for accuracy.”

Charges of research fraud are lodged against other DEI hucksters — ousted Harvard President Claudine Gay, Harvard DEI Chief Officer Sherri Ann Carlson, University of Wisconsin-Madison DEI Chief Officer LaVar Charleston, Columbia University Medical Center DEI Chief Officer  Alade McKen — who’ve all been accused primarily of plagiarism.

But unlike them, Boaler did give credit to others’ research, but what she gave credit for was  not  what the credited research actually showed.

When Boaler cited author Randall Engel regarding “math anxiety” to attack algebra in middle school and calculus in high school, for example, Engel called it a “huge misrepresentation” of his work.

Boaler seems like a veritable Sam Bankman-Fried of math education with fraudulent research and idea-laundering.

Her “research” has helped her build a thriving math-ed-DEI business, called YouCubed , replete with materials, courses and consulting services (not that her six-figure salary as a tenured professor at Stanford is shabby to begin with).

The news of the complaint quickly drew tweets from prominent critics of DEI, including activist investor  Bill Ackman , internet pioneer Marc Andreessen , entrepreneur Elon Musk , filmmaker  Eli Steele and Peter Boghossian , who, along with James Lindsay, were early exposers of the DEI academic hoax.

(Boghossian was pushed out from his university academic position for his stand.)

And while we hold our breath waiting for a response from Stanford, it’s worth surveying the damage.

Remember, the harm is not just in the lying, the corruption, the unfair self-enrichment; Boaler’s schemes gravely hurt the kids of California and others around the country.

Again, she’s one of the biggest influencers of mathematics education, particularly when it comes to claims that race should somehow be a factor in it.

Families in San Francisco fought hard in what became known as the “math wars” against this obviously stupid ban — how does denying everyone a chance to learn algebra help anyone?

But Boaler, backed up by extensive “research” from the illustrious Stanford University, enabled the school board to beat the families.

It took 10 years to get the algebra ban lifted — including angry  school board elections   that threw out the wokest members, threats of litigation and legislation, alarming drops in standardized math-test scores and an admission by the University of California that such dumbing down of students left students, well, dumbed down.

Meanwhile, an entire generation of San Francisco’s students was sacrificed to DEI.

The harm is not limited to San Francisco.

Banning algebra from middle school based on Boaler’s research became a national crusade, with a similar effort  in New York City  nearly succeeding.

Campaigns to ban calculus (presumably another source of racism somehow) from high schools also gained momentum.

Such dumbing down of math is exactly as prescribed by the  California Mathematics Framework , a project mandated by California state law to regulate the teaching of math, of which Boaler is a key author.

Again, damage won’t be limited just to California, because what the largest state does in education, the nation follows.

Whatever Stanford does with Boaler, the DEI fraud appears set to expand exponentially.

Legislation in California’s Democratic-run legislature (ACA-7) contains the provision to “fund research-based, or research-informed, and culturally specific interventions or programs . . . [for] specific ethnic groups.”

In other words, California taxpayers will be required by law to fund DEI research — like that of Boaler.

Well, what could possibly go wrong there?

The Department of Surgery Tumor Immunotherapy Lab, led by Dr. Amanda Kirane at Stanford University, is seeking a talented postdoctoral scientist to join the research team.  Dramatic advances have been made in the treatment of melanoma and other checkpoint-responsive cancers, however, overall response is inadequate and significant adverse event rate remains high. Currently, there are no reliable predictive tools in clinical use and mechanisms of resistance to standard checkpoint therapy are poorly understood.  Our lab joins the intersection of basic cancer immunology, patient-derived modeling, biomarker assay development, and novel spatial computational interrogation to take an immersive approach to this problem.  The goal of this program is to perform high-quality research that utilizing clinical and basic mechanistic data to develop immediately usable, predictive tools for clinical testing.   Position Description We are currently seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Trainee in the field of Cancer Immunology, Immunotherapeutics, and Computational Immunology.  The successful candidate will work at the intersection of immunology, cancer biology, and bioinformatics with focus on the application of novel computational approaches, particularly spatial biology, to decode the complexities of immune response and therapeutic resistance in cancer. As a Postdoctoral Trainee, you will conduct groundbreaking and innovative research using techniques including, but not limited, to multiplex spatial IHC, genetic sequencing data analysis, study of immune cell signatures in tumor microenvironments, and immune response modeling.  You’ll be encouraged to develop your independent research questions and methodologies under mentorship of expert staff and multidisciplinary collaborations in Materials Science, Engineering, Molecular Biology, and Bioinformatics.   Training overview:

  • Individualized mentorship from a vibrant group of successful faculty from the Department of Surgery, the Stanford Cancer Center, Stanford Immunology, Stanford Engineering, and international collaborators in Bioinformatics and Bioassay design.

The Office of the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education (VPUE) is seeking an Associate Director of Community Engaged Learning and Research for the Haas Center for Public Service. Reporting to the Deputy Director, the Associate Director will provide leadership, direction, and strategy for the center’s Community Engaged Learning and Research (CELR) team. The CELR team includes 11 staff and collectively leads the center’s efforts to integrate public service and community engagement into the undergraduate and graduate curriculum, support community engaged teaching and research, and strengthen two signature place-based initiatives in education and sustainability.  

In this role, you will:

Lead the Community Engaged Learning and Research unit:

●                    Lead and oversee development, implementation, administration, and evaluation of community engaged learning, public service research, place-based initiatives, and graduate student programming, including collaborative efforts with the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education, the Vice Provost for Graduate Education, and various academic schools, departments, and programs.

●                    Manage, coach and mentor professional staff, including annual performance planning and regular meetings with up to six direct reports.

●                    Oversee the development of two signature place-based initiatives in education and sustainability, including setting program priorities, managing program staff, and engaging with campus and community partners.

●                    Interpret, implement and ensure compliance with university, academic and administrative policies within an organization or program. Recommend new internal policies, guidelines and procedures.

●                    Develop long-range planning and policy development for initiatives or programs. Manage, develop, and forecast department and program budgets, insure data and assessment goals are met, lead branding, and assist with development and stewardship.

Represent the Haas Center and CELR team across campus and in the community

●                    Represent the Haas Center and Cardinal Service to the broader university, external community, and other stakeholders. Provide expert consultation related to program development, funding opportunities, or other specialty area.

●                    Present to faculty and other internal and external stakeholders on community engaged learning, course design, engaged teaching approaches, and community engaged research.

●                    Identify external funding opportunities, assist with donor relations and stewardship, and write proposals and grants. Develop and oversee strategic financial planning and sustainability for community engaged learning and research; monitor performance and ensure appropriate controls.

Develop and strengthen partnerships with faculty and community organizations

●                    Cultivate and support faculty involvement in public service, particularly in ways that connect with academic courses, internships, and research; provide a range of individual and cohort support to faculty who are new to community engagement and opportunities to deepen practice with those who have a long-term commitment to community engagement.

●                    Administer grant programs to support faculty, and implement the Miriam Aaron Roland Volunteer Service prize for faculty and other means of recognizing outstanding community engagement among faculty, students, and community partners.

●                    Develop, facilitate, and maintain relationships between external community partners, faculty, and university liaisons; coordinate mechanisms and shared databases for tracking, monitoring, and assessing partnerships with faculty and external partners.

Support undergraduate and graduate students interested in public service and community engagement

●                    May teach or co-teach courses; oversee the administration of courses; create and/or advise in the development of curriculum; and/or advise students, coach, and mentor program staff.

●                    Serve as a mentor and provide direct advice to undergraduate and graduate students on a range of issues including, but not limited to academic and service connections, ethical and effective service, service project and learning plan development, career plans, accessibility, community standards, etc., to assist them in making appropriate choices and decisions.

●                    Oversee the application and selection process for the Cardinal Service Notation, a transcript designation for students who complete a significant service commitment.

●                    Ability to oversee and direct staff.

The expected pay range for this position is  $109,000 to $168,000 per annum . Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
